Many of those plastic soda bottles you recycle in a single-stream curbside container, perhaps, will find new life as high-quality Georgia carpet. Companies such as Waste Management and Waste Connections take it from your curbside recycling bin, then other companies such as Tennessee American Recycling LLC, prepare it for a “bailed” path to Asheville, N.C., for further sorting and preparation before reaching the Peach State. “We use No. 1 PET plastic,” said Jenny Cross, global sustainability director with Mohawk Industries, Inc. based in Dalton, Ga., about what amounts to “around three billion bottles a year that come in” to be converted into carpet. Cross said Mohawk is one of “three of us in the industry” among major carpet manufacturers “that recycle bottles” into carpet. Mohawk receives plastic bottles at its Summerville, Ga., recycling plant “typically bailed up. We get them from all over North America, we’ll purchase from all over.” “We do another sort of them because

sometimes you’ll get cans in a bail or you’ll get a milk jug, which is not what we’re looking for,” Cross added. “As well as the color separation.” “The color you have in a Mountain Dew bottle is green, that doesn’t do very well for off-white or beige carpet. So we’ll separate that out and put that in a darker color.” Clear plastic bottles “can go into anything, clear will take any color,” Cross said. “It’s those that already have some color that are a bit restricted in the darker shade. “Then we’ll chop everything up … it makes it in to what we call flake, so it’s little flakes,” Cross added. “And it goes into a washer at that point to clean. It goes into a hot water bath.” “A bottle has three different plastics in it: the bottle itself, then you have the label and then you have the cap. We have to separate those out.” Though all three components are “ground up at the same time,” the carpet-making PET bottle portion, upon being washed, “will go to the bottom,” Cross said. “And everything else floats to the top.” The ground up and floating plastic — from See PLASTIC on Page 7

“Organic” has become a hot topic, a marketing campaign and a grocery shopping key word in recent years, but commercial vegetable extension specialist at The University of Tennessee, Annette Wszelaki, wants consumers to educate themselves on what the word really means. And on what it could mean for their own backyards. “People have a Wszelaki perception that it can be more nutritious and better for you to eat organic. And I use the word ‘perception’ because that’s not necessarily the case,” Wszelaki said. Grocery store studies of organic versus conventionally grown fruits and vegetables often have conflicting results because so many other factors influence those foods — where it was grown, how far it traveled, how long it

sat in the grocery store, the type of soil it grew in, and the variety of each vegetable. “There is that perception, but there is no good evidence one way or another. It’s extremely hard to do a study and compare the two,” Wszelaki said. One of the best ways to eat healthy food — and to control what’s in or on your fruits and vegetables — is to grow it yourself. Wszelaki said she’s seen a resurgence in backyard gardens, due both to the recession — as people look for inexpensive ways to acquire healthy food — and the local food movement. “You know, everybody used to have a garden. And now people are coming back around to that because they miss that connection to their food,” Wszelaki said. “There’s a lot of satisfaction in growing your own garden. You can go out and say, ‘I grew this tomato from a tiny seed.’ It’s very satisfying,” she added. Growing food at home likely isn’t a fad, she said, since it builds upon the local food movement and the desire many have to know where their food

comes from. In addition, growing food at home means knowing exactly what is — or is not — in it. “And we see more and more food safety outbreaks than we ever did before, and that’s partially because of the global nature of our food systems,” Wszelaki said. Organic gardening at home differs from conventional gardening in that it doesn’t rely on chemical fertilizers, pesticides or herbicides. That typically means no traditional 20-20-20 supplements providing nitrogen, phosphate and potassium to plants. Instead, plants are supplemented with compost and natural sources of those minerals, such as bone or blood meal or the like. Pest management might include pesticides that have been approved for organic use, or might include biological controls, such as Bacillus thuringiensis, a microbial insecticide Wszelaki said she uses in UT garden, to kill caterpillars on cabbages. “It’s very safe, but it stops those See ORGANIC on Page 5

caterpillars from feeding on vegetables,” Wszelaki said. Herbicides traditionally aren’t used in organic gardening because they only slow weed growth, rather than stop it. But in organically-accepted herbicides, high-acetic acid vinegar is an example. “It burns everything down, but then it will recover. But you certainly wouldn’t want to get that in your eye or anything, because it could be just as harsh as something else,” Wszelaki said. In general, organic gardening takes a holistic look at your garden as a whole, rather than on using chemicals to provide one benefit at a time. Wszelaki said cover cropping — the practice of planting a crop such as

clover or rye grass over soil that otherwise would be bare between cash crop plantings — is one example. “You might plant it to prevent erosion, if you’re in an area with erosion problems, but in the meantime it will prevent soil erosion ... it’ll also choke out other weeds ... when you till it under, it will improve the organic matter in your soil,” Wszelaki said. Cover crops also can bring in beneficial insects, and cover crops that are part of the legume family fix nitrogen into the soil. “All of those things overlap, because in an organic system, you’re not spraying a fungicide, you’re doing these other production techniques that don’t just do one thing, they do a multitude of things,” Wszelaki said. Another example is crop rotation, or not planting the same vegetables, or

vegetables in the same family, in the same spot year after year. Crop rotation cuts down on diseases and insect infestations. “So you have tomatoes in there one year, and you rotate out of the tomato family the next year, and you might have pumpkins,” Wszelaki said. Pumpkins have different root systems that work the soil differently, feed on different nutrients and cover the soil, preventing weeds. The next year, the same bed might be ready for a crop such as carrots, which grows differently than either pumpkins or tomatoes. “All of these things fit together, and it’s really a holistic system. It’s not a magic bullet. It’s intentionally doing things to build your soil, attract beneficial insects and just get your system to naturally work together,” Wszelaki said.

the caps and labels — either is sold or used “as backing” for the carpet, Cross said. After the bottle flakes are dried, “We start to do a process that we call extruding, which just makes it into a fiber,” Cross said. Also having plants in North Carolina, South Carolina and elsewhere in Georgia, “Then we take it to another plant to make it into a yarn,” Cross said. “Then another plant to make it into a carpet. Dalton [plant] probably has … the physical carpet making process,” which includes “dyeing and finishing.” Cross said it’s an industry process to

make recycled plastic into carpet on a demand basis. “We don’t keep a lot of inventory, we’ll make it as it goes as we get the purchases.” “On average, we say a square yard has about 30 bottles in it,” Cross said. “We make a number of different styles of carpet from this.” The job of Tennessee American Recycling is to compact and bail “household plastics,” obtained from curbside recyclers, along with “cardboard, all kinds of paper,” said Clark Lindsey, company president. “No glass.” Saying recycling has grown, “That single-stream has really made a difference in the amount of recyclables,” Lindsay said about simply combining all types of acceptable recyclables into one bin.

Above: Here the plastic bottles have been ground into chips. Next, they will be vigorously cleaned, cut into pellets and extruded into premium carpet fiber.
