One Tank Trips Nearby destinations for summer fun Five cities with unique, mustsee tourist attractions — all within 200 miles of the Farragut area — are big enough to offer most every basic tourism amenity yet small enough to avoid the aggravation of big city traffic and the terror of big city crime. Better yet, all can be visited with one tank of gas. The “big five” include Chattanooga’s many selling points, but also includes experiencing the history, scenery and special entertainment buzz in cities representing four border states: Asheville, N.C.; Lexington, Ky., Greenville, S.C. and Huntsville, Ala. The tourist highlights of Farragut’s own “big sister” city, Knoxville, also are detailed.
Asheville, North Carolina
Stretch your legs out while exploring the historic Grove Park Inn, a resort hotel in Asheville. Stroll around the botanical
gardens or sip your coffee on any of the countless porches overlooking the Blue Ridge Mountainscape. Grab some lunch at Horizon’s Café, a nationally recognized restaurant on the west wing of the resort. If you are there in the winter, you may catch a glimpse of the annual gingerbread house competition, a time when the resort is full of the most decadently-sugar-coated houses you have ever seen. Check out the shops of Biltmore Estates’ Village & Winery, a sure way to entertain every family member with a variety of shops. Cool down with a bite from the Ice Cream Garden, the backyard of a historic shop. If you are in town Thursday through Sunday, July 17-20, or Thursday through Sunday, Oct. 1619, stop by the 67th Annual Craft Fair of the Southern Highlands in downtown Asheville. The nearly 200 artists will give you a taste of how much art plays into the everyday life of downtown Asheville natives. End the day with a concert at
Biltmore, where Friday night concerts take place through the fall and are friendly enough to bring the children. Plenty of food and drinks also will be available so you do not have to leave Biltmore grounds until your drive home.
Chattanooga, Tennessee
Chattanooga has a familiar ring for West Knox County residents, but its proximity and abundant entertainment options make it an easy and fun-packed getaway. Reward yourself (and the children) for a smooth ride by stopping at Coolidge Park, where you can ride a restored carousel from 1894 for just $1. Right across the river is the Tennessee Aquarium, home for
more than 10,000 fresh and saltwater fish and animals. The aquarium even has interactive meetand-greet with animals, plus an IMAX 3-D theatre. Bundle packages are available if the family wants to take a riverboat cruise on the River Gorge Explorer after the underwater adventure. If you are in town on a Saturday, See ONE TANK on Page 5C
Matlock Tire tips for your summer trip Before you take that road trip, get those tires inspected. Heat can and will cause the tires to become delaminate, or fall apart, Tim Williams, branch manager of Matlock Tire Service and Auto Repair, at 10730 Kingston Pike, in Farragut, said. “Rubber and plastics obviously degrade due to exposure to ozone, chemicals, age and heat,” Williams added. “Summer heat can cause rubber composition to change. It doesn’t melt necessarily, but if it gets hot enough, the rubber starts breaking down and breaks apart.” Another factor of tire degradation is the composition of today’s tires. Williams said they have more plastic in their molecular structure than before – some for cos-
metic reasons – and the plastic can show more rapid wear. Age, in conjunction with the summer heat, can degrade the tires faster. “Age and heat creates more tire failures than anything else,” Williams said. A recall in 1991 showed people had some dry, rotting tires they were driving on, he said. ”People were concerned whether they were buying old tires,” he said. “More importantly was not the age of the tires people were buying but the age of tires they are driving on today.” There is a misconception about the tire scraps people see on the road are from commercial tires in the summertime. Williams said those scraps are not necessary from commercial tires but from
the tread peeling off cars. Also, people check only the tread of the tire, but there is another way to check the age, he said. “All tires have a DOT serial number on the tires,” Williams said. “It is stamped on the tire. That will disclose the age of the tire. “When tires get five or six years old, especially this time of year, it’s important to get them off your car,” he said. Williams added people living in places such as Florida are advised to replace tires after four years. Williams advises people to have their tires inspected before they take a summer trip: do not wait until to on the Interstate and start noticing symptoms. “Check for cracking,” he said.

Tim Williams, branch manager of Matlock Tire Service and Auto Repair, 10730 Kingston Pike in Farragut, shows an 8year-old tire someone came into Matlock Tire with recently. “Get them off the car before they get too aged.” He recommends people should also check for under-inflated tires, which can also cause the

Summer car care
recommendations for area drivers Summer is here! It’s time to check the running condition of your cars and trucks not only for everyday wear and tear caused by heat during daily commutes, but to get ready for vacation road trips. Summer heat can be harsh and damage tires, cooling systems, batteries, belts and hoses especially during high temperatures. To be secure in your vehicle these components should be checked from time to time during the summer to help avoid breakdowns and car problems that can leave you stranded. Barry Dickey, owner of PRO TOY Automotive Service Center, serving the Knoxville area since September 2001, said, “My advice is the first thing for the owner to do is check the vehicle owner’s manual for prescribed services and scheduled maintenance. My approach regarding automotive maintenance may be a little different than others, but if vehicles aren’t properly maintained there could be issues and owners won’t be able to get to the performance and dependability they are looking for.” Maintenance program technology for maintaining vehicles and keeping them in excellent running condition has changed with the times. Today highly sophisticated ignition and fuel systems are the norm and onboard computers control critical functions of the vehicle. General maintenance programs for newer vehicles have changed in recent years, but owners still need to be concerned about summer conditions that can cause unexpected damage.
Dickey advises that air filters be inspected and generally changed every 20,000 to 30,000 miles depending on the manufacturer’s specifications and environmental exposure. Cabin air filters will keep pollen and other airborne debris from air conditioning systems while engine air filters protect the engine intake system. “In the summer, conditions can become very dusty and clog engine and cabin air filters. This can cause a decreased performance in the vehicle fuel mileage and performance as well in the cabin cooling systems,“ he said. As the summer progresses drivers should be aware that all fluid levels need to be checked and changed if necessary. “Antifreeze/coolant levels should be checked. This is particularly critical when the weather is hot. It can cause stress on engines,” Dickey said. Belts, hoses and mounts should be checked for cracks or frays. “Belts and hoses can become dry and brittle. If a belt breaks while on the road people can lose time and money to have the vehicle towed to a repair shop,” cautioned Dickey. “Tires should be checked for proper inflation. Tire air pressure is important in summer. The hotter it gets the more tires expand and this can cause tires to wear abnormally. It’s best to check air pressure when tires are cool,” said Dickey, suggesting owners follow the manufacturer’s recommendation found on the driver’s door jam. He said tires should be rotated every 5,000 to 7,500 miles
and balanced when vibrations are felt at highway speeds. Pot holes are unfriendly to East Tennessee drivers and shocks and struts should be inspected for wear and leaks. Dickey recommends drivers check wiper blades and be sure they are in good condition in case
of a summer pop-up storm. He also suggests that a “Just in Case” emergency road kit be kept in the vehicle. It should contain jumper cables, flashlight, emergency flat tire repair, wrenches, screwdrivers, and a first-aid kit, distilled water for the radiator and drinking water for occupants.
“Vehicle owners should become familiar with their vehicles and the owner manual so they are familiar with how it should operate. In addition they should know the manufacturer’s recommendations for maintenance and work with a reputable repair center,” emphasized Dickey.

Splat-splat, don’t worry use FastPass You’re driving down the road with the sun high in the distance, it’s been a great day and you’re looking forward to a long weekend. Your car was washed yesterday and you’re feeling good as you swish past that old minivan that has “wash me” written on the backend. It feels good to be in a clean car, you’re happy you have a FastPass at 3 Minute Magic – all is good. Suddenly there’s a SPLAT-SPLAT on your windshield and hood of your car - Bird Poop! It’s everywhere, you grit your teeth as you imagine the paint’s finish, you wrestle with turning on the wipers but fear it will only smear across your field of view, you think of the weather man and you revise the morning’s forecast for him; “mostly sunny with a 30% chance of bird poop!” Your trip home just changed; it’s time to find your nearest 3 Minute Magic and take care of the mess. Press the hands free button and let the others know you will be just a couple of minutes late - you’ve had an unexpected treat fall from the sky on your way home. You realize going straight home and parking under the hot sun for the weekend will only bake the poop into your paint and damage the clear coat. You’ve read that carbon from tail pipes, road film, var-

ious bug guts and air born contaminants left on the surface of your car to fight the hot sun is damaging to the finish. As temperatures rise in the summer even rain drops with foreign deposits inside them can bake on the paint. Oxidization will haze and dull the finish if left untreated, slowly, imperceptibly, paint damage occurs and the once shiny new car looks different, older than before. No worries, your FastPass allows you to wash every day if needed, and can be used at any location. It’s that gym-membership for your car, you pay one low monthly fee and the gates rise automatically without stopping at the pay stations and pressing the buttons. Thankful for the freedom and ease, you shoot past the guy in the other lane fumbling for cash, you wash the car faster than you expected, protected the investment and caught a break on the red lights on the way home. You arriv only 3 Minutes behind schedule once again happy and feeling good as you look ahead to the long weekend with friends and family! “Save Money – Live Clean” sure makes a lot of sense as you think about that revised weather forecast… If you don't particularly care how the car looks, don’t wax it, keeping the car washed will leave it look-
ing reasonably clean and shiny, but waxing it regularly will provide immeasurable protection and enhance the shine and value of your investment. Not waxing leaves the car vulnerable from contaminants and harsh weather. Synthetic formulas in liquid hot waxes are now being applied at 3 Minute Magic, in a fraction of the time and at a fraction of the cost of traditional hand waxing. They offer enhanced shine and protection for your 4-wheeled friend. Try Hot Wax + Buff-N-Shine today for only $15 per visit. Or, buy the FastPass for $45 a month and can wash every day at any location, add a second vehicle for only $22.50 a month. There’s never a contract, cancel anytime. We are that confident it will help you Save Money & Live Clean!

Huntsville, Alabama
Huntsville, Ala., has a variety of outdoor adventures for your family. Set your GPS to Russell Cave National Monument on your way there. This historic landmark used to be home to the first North American residents as early as 10,000 B.C. “People should stop at Russell Cave, because it is one of the few spots in the Southeastern United States where people continuously occupied a home for 10,000 plus years … A tank of gas will run you about 40 bucks and Russell Cave will run you zero dollars. It all adds up somewhere,” Antoine Fletcher, Russell Cave content management specialist and outreach coordinator, said. Soak in the history free of charge with a guided tour, prehistoric tool presentations, stargazing and nature hikes. Pack your lunches and take a seat at their picnic area, an easy way to entertain and save money. Did you know Huntsville used to be a major gold site? Go on a treasure hunt and see if there is any left at Burritt Treasure Hunt at Gold Mountain through Sept. 1. Its interactive entertainment is sure to peak interest for both parents and children. The day spent outside should work up an appetite; but luckily, Huntsville is home to a specific type of hunger quencher: barbeque. Since the majority of famous Hunstville restaurant lists are made up of home-style BBQ spots,
then it must be good. Choose from Blackjacks and Things BBQ, Melvin’s Place of BBQ or the Peppered Pig, just to name a few.

The three-hour tours include several stops at multiple horse farms of all
types and ages, and most will stop at Keeneland racetrack. Open year-round, Keenland holds races every April and October. Road trip Keeping costs down In an era of escalated airline ticket prices and extra travel expenses, road trips have emerged once more as a popular and cost-conscious mode of vacationing for individuals and families. Nearly 80 percent of leisure trips in 2012 were made by car, says the U.S. Travel Association. Those making road trips may be concerned about keeping costs down, particularly if saving money is the catalyst behind the road trip vacation. The following are a few tips to stretch dollars that much further on your next road trip. • Dine out sparingly. Road stops and drive-thru food expenditures can quickly add up during the course of a road trip. Therefore, pack the majority of
the food you will eat in a cooler. Not only will this save money, it will mean food is at the ready when hunger strikes. Food need not be all cold snacks, like sandwiches. Frozen burgers or refrigerated frankfurters can be cooked on a camp stove or tossed on a grill at a park's picnic area. Save restaurant dining as a special treat during the vacation. • Look for inexpensive lodging. While on a road trip you may need to compromise some of the comforts of home to save some money. Motel rates are another trip budget-buster. But by mixing overnights at motels with less expensive options you may be able to mitigate costs. Camp out at a safe campsite and purchase a shower ticket so you can enjoy a
cheap, hot shower the next day. Spend a few nights under the stars; just be sure you have the right gear. Some also like to plan road trip routes between where relatives live and make pit stops at a friend or family member's home. When seeking motels, try to bargain and see if you're eligible for any rebates or coupons due to age or military status. • Map out cheaper gas stations. Today's smartphones have apps that enable you to find nearby gas stations. Such apps may even shed light on which filling stations offer the best prices on gasoline. • Dont speed. In addition to being illegal, speeding wastes gas. Stick to the speed limit to avoid potentially costly tickets and
improve fuel efficiency. • Bring friends along. Friends will not only make the trip more fun, but they also can take turns driving and sharing the costs of the excursion. • Join a roadside assistance club. Vehicle problems are inevitable if you are a frequent road-tripper who's driving an older car. Avoid potentially costly towing costs by joining a roadside assistance club that will pay for your vehicle to be towed if necessary. • Have the proper paperwork.
Keep a current copy of your car registration, license and proof of insurance with you on a road trip. This makes it much easier to deal with traffic stops along the way. Individuals and their passengers planning on visiting another country should have their passports available and follow the laws regarding bringing food or goods over the border to avoid fines. Road trips can be enjoyable excursions that cost far less than other vacations. Road-trippers can stretch funds even further with some handy tips.
