Silver anniversary Celebrating 25 years of professional golf; 16 at Fox Den Country Club

ALAN SLOAN asloan@farragutpress.com

Celebrating its 25th year, the original Ben Hogan Tour for aspiring professional golfers looking to earn a PGA Tour card — now web.com Tour — has had three reliable stops nationwide all 25 years. Knox County has been one of those — with Farragut’s Fox Den Country Club hosting the past 16 years after Farragut’s Willow Creek Golf Club hosted the first five (1990-94). A field including former PGA Tour pros joins a former Farragut High School star golfer, Brandon Bunn, as a 156-man field descends upon Farragut and FDCC for 2014 News Sentinel Open presented by Pilot Thursday through Sunday, Aug. 14-17. Six former News Sentinel Open champs are among the 156: Darron Stiles (2002, 2012), Hunter Haas (2004, 2006), Jeff Gove (1999), Vaughn Taylor (2003), Jarrod Lyle (2008) and Kevin Johnson (2009). 4 • EVERYTHING GOLF AUGUST 14, 2014

Purse is $550,000, with $99,000 going to the champion. Of the three remaining web.com Tour cities/towns from 1990, Farragut “was the first one on the list that year, so we hold our head high in saying we are the oldest one,” Scott Moran, FDCC Head Golf Professional, said. Highlighting this silver anniversary of “minor league” professional golf in Knox County and nationwide — while commemorating PGA Tour “majors” champions such as Bubba Watson, Lee Janzen and John Daly who have played at FDCC — “They are going to have a pavilion this year by the putting green,” Moran said of what he called a “history tent.” “It’s basically a historical pavilion … and will have a list with all the names including myself and a few other people. There’s about 20 or 25 local players, amateurs and professionals, that have played in the News Sentinel Open,” he added. “A lot of life-sized stand-up [cutout images], like Tom Lehman and Bubba

Watson, life-sized stand-up photographs that kids can have their pictures taken with. It’s just going to be like a neat little historical tent that people can visit and see the history from the Ben Hogan Tour to what it is now, the web.com Tour.” Also on display will be the trophy “of the winner of the very first Ben Hogan Tour event [in 1990], which was held in California,” Moran said. “He sent us his trophy to put on display.” Tee times for the par 71, 7,071-yard course are on page 19. General admission is $10 daily and $25 for a weekly pass. Tickets are on sale each tournament day at the entrance gate. Purchase pre-sale and group tickets by contacting tournament headquarters at 865-966-7693. Parking in the field off Smith Road about one-half mile north of the Smith Road-Kingston Pike intersection is $5, which benefits local Shriners. Transportation is provided to and from the course from one hour before first tee times to one hour after each round.

Copper Cellar 19th Hole Pass is $125 per day, which includes admission. Pass provides an all-you-can-eat buffet provided by Copper Cellar Catering. Heineken House on 16 Pass is $65 per day, with tournament admission. It provides full service hospitality in an outdoor setting at hole No 16. As for changes in course or individual hole design, “Nothing has changed within the last two years,” Moran said. Moran made it clear that neither Web.com Tour nor PGA officials or agronomists “have ever influenced what we’ve done on the golf course.” Working through “the golf committee, the greens committees and our golf course architect, Bill Bergin, we have established things we know that we needed to improve and change,” Moran added. “The only thing the PGA Tour agronomist will do is they will kind of give us recommendations as to the mowing patterns, and trying to increase some areas of turf conditions and the health of the golf course.”

Chapman breaks down News Sentinel Open course Two-time state PGA Player of the Year analyzes Fox Den Golf Course holes

ALAN SLOAN asloan@farragutpress.com

A two-time state PGA Player of the Year who earned his way into three PGA Tour majors (1986 U.S. Open plus 1994 and 1996 PGA), Walt Chapman of Farragut said he’s played Fox Den Country Club’s golf course “probably 75 to 100 times.” Chapman, 52, said he’s received feedback from “30 or so” web.com Tour professionals about FDCC, “at least a dozen” of whom currently play on the Tour. “I think a lot of the guys like the course OK, they like the clubhouse, they get treated really well,” Chapman, Director of Instruction at Fairways and Greens Golf Center in West Knoxville, added. “They do a really good job with the tournament from what I’ve heard from most of the guys.” Web.com Tour’s annual News Sentinel Open presented by Pilot, celebrating its 25th year in Knox County and 16th straight year at Fox Den, brings a field of 156 — including former PGA Tour pros — to Farragut Thursday, Aug. 14, through Sunday, Aug. 17. Tee times for the par 71, 7,071-yard course are on page 19. With FDCC being “a placement-position golf course, it really takes the driver out of their hands a lot. That’s the only complaint I usually hear,” Chapman added. “You just don’t hit a lot of drivers there if you hit the ball a long ways. Some of the other courses on the web.com Tour are longer and more straightforward. This one

6 • EVERYTHING GOLF AUGUST 14, 2014

has a little more strategy and placement to it.” Overall, however, “I think most people like the golf course,” he said. “You can be a short hitter or a long hitter and still be competitive on it.” As for Chapman’s favorite holes, “I like 15 [par 4, 427 yards] for the challenge, for the positioning and the second shot,” he said. “Sixteen [par 3, 214] I think is a really good par 3 for a challenge.” As for the most difficult holes for the web.com Tour pros, “No. 15 is one of them,” Chapman said. “Seventeen [par 4, 458] can get you in trouble, definitely, because it’s a longer par 4 to get up and down if you miss the green. No. 4 [par 4, 436] is a difficult hole because of the way the green slopes kind of away from you on the second shot. It’s hard to hit that green.” Chapman analyzes each of FDCC’s 18 holes from a web.com Tour perspective:

No. 1 (par 4, 482 yards): “The first hole they converted to a par 4 last year, it’s normally a par 5. It’s a dogleg to the right and a lot of guys will hit driver over the corner, or possibly even long ones will hit a 3wood. “It’s a pretty hard opening hole because you have to hit a good tee shot. And then you’re probably going to have a middle iron into the first green.” See HOLES on Page 8

Par 3, 193 yards

No. 2

(par 3, 193 yards): “A par 3. On the green, if they put the pin on the left it’s a really tough pin placement because they’ll have the greens pretty hard, and if you pull it a little bit it can actually hit on that green and go into the water. So most people will try to aim a little right of the pin.”

No. 4

No. 3 (par 4, 409 yards): “A par 4, little dogleg to the right. Again, a position hole. A lot of guys will try to hit a driver over that tree [along the fairway] and then have a short iron. Or you can hit 3-wood a little left of that tree and then you’ve probably got a middle iron more into the hole. The second shot’s uphill, so you want to make sure you stay short of the hole position on that green because the green slopes from back to front. If you hit it over the green there you’re going to have a difficult up-and-down.”

(par 4, 436 yards): “Dogleg right, again a position hole. Most guys are going to hit 3-wood out there, keep it left of the tree. The key to that hole is the second shot. The green is kind of narrow from front to back, so you’ve got to have the correct distance on the second shot. And even the pond on the left comes into play on your second shot as well, so club selection on the second shot is important on that hole.” See HOLES on Page 10

Holes From page 8

No. 5 (par 5, 533 yards): “A par 5, kind of a double-dogleg. The long-knockers can go for that green in two. You’ve got to hit a big drive down that right side, then you’ve got to be able to hit something up in the air pretty high for your second shot. Some long players can get to that green in two, but you’ve got to be perfect on your tee shot. Most guys will just hit their drive kind of down the left side then lay up and hit a third shot [to the green] from roughly a hundred yards.”

No. 6 (par 3, 198 yards): “A downhill par 3. Club selection is important. You’ve got to take into account the downhill. It usually takes about 10 yards off the shot going downhill. Pretty good-sized green. Again, getting the right club selection on that downhill shot is the key.”

No. 7 (par 4, 422 yards): Dogleg left. Most players will hit a 3-wood off that tee. Try to hit a little bit of a draw with a 3wood, then you’ve got a 7- or 8-iron into that green. A fairly good-sized green. Again, you do not want to go long on that hole, really difficult to get up and down if you miss the green there.”

No. 8 (par 4, 400 yards): “Straightaway par 4. You can hit driver there. The longer knockers, they can get it there; they can get it within a 100 yards of the green if they hit a driver. Most guys will hit a 3-wood off that tee and then you’ve got a 130-, 140yard shot. Pretty good-sized green. If the pin’s tucked right, you definitely don’t want to miss the green to the right because it’s difficult to get up and down.”

(par 5, 561 yards): “Par 5 doglegs left and back right. A lot of guys can get to that green in two. It’s definitely a birdie hole. If you carry the bunker on the left, you can get there with a hybrid or 3-wood on your second shot. You will see some guys that will hit it a little right off of the tee, and then they’ll lay up and then have a wedge in. Most people go for that green; it’s a pretty good-sized green. And you can get up and down from around that green, it’s not too severely sloped. A good birdie hole.”

No. 9 (par 4, 421 yards): “A little dogleg left. Uphill on the second shot. A lot of guys will just hit driver and try and carry the corner, and that leaves you a short iron into the ninth hole. You can hit 3wood there, but you’re going to have a longer second shot going uphill. It’s difficult to get the right club selection on the second shot because the green is so uphill from you. And it’s a fairly big green, so if you can get on that green you’ve got a pretty good putt for birdie.”

Par 4, 413 yards

No. 11 (par 4, 413 yards): “Dogleg left, a sharp left. The tee shot’s the most important thing there. You’ve got to draw it on your tee shot because the fairway slopes to the right, so if you hit it straight it’ll kick your tee shot to the right and then you’ve got a longer shot in there. It’s important, if you’re a right-handed golfer, to hit a little draw there and then you’ll have a short iron into the green. A pretty goodsized green. The second shot plays a little uphill. Again, if you miss to the right on your second shot it’s hard to get up and down.” See HOLES on Page 14

You can, off that tee, take a driver and try and cut the corner, but it’s probably not worth the risk. Pretty good green, the green’s got some pretty good slope to it. That’s probably a birdie hole for a lot of people if you get in good position on that green. The green has a little bit of slope on the front part of the green.”

Par 4, 427 yards

No. 13 (par 3, 166 yards): “A par 3, really good hole. The green is fairly narrow. It’s roughly a 175-yard shot. Pin placements are the key there. They can put a pin back left, back right. The water does come into play if you push it. You can hit it on the green there, but if it’s moving to the right it can go into the water on you. Most guys will kind of veer toward the left on that shot.”

No. 15 (par 4, 427 yards): “Pretty difficult hole. A dogleg to the right. Your tee shot has to be the correct distance, you’ve got to hit it roughly about 230 off the tee. If you don’t go that far you’re blocked by trees on the right. If you go too far on your tee shot you’ll end up in a fairway bunker. You don’t want that because the green has a pond in front of it, so you have to be in position off the tee to get on that green. A big green with good slope to it. They’ll usually put the pin kind of front left, and a lot of guys will hit it in the hazard there on their second shot if they pull it at all because the green slopes off toward the pond.”

HoleInOne Shoot Out Golfers invited to take a shot at winning a Mercedes-Benz Smart Passion Coupe

ALAN SLOAN asloan@farragutpress.com

Jim Hart has fond memories of Farragut Lions Club Hole-In-One Shoot Out fundraisers from the mid-1990s inside Town limits — a two-part process where, in 2014, a lucky and dead-on-aim golfer will win a Mercedes-Benz new $17,500 Smart Passion Coupe with a hole-in-one. “It went well, we drew a few hundred. We went over there where SunTrust is now [along Kingston Pike]. It used to be the Walmart. I’m thinking we did it eight to 10 years,” Hart, a Farragut Lions Club member and Shoot Out committee member, said about the last FLC Shoot Out fundraiser in 1996 — until now. Led by committee chair and FLC member Ed Mee, a seven-member FLC committee has revived this fundraiser. Shootout’s part one begins on grounds adjacent to farragutpress office at 11863 16 • EVERYTHING GOLF AUGUST 14, 2014

Alongside the grand prize, a $17,500 Mercedes-Benz Smart Passion Coupe, Farragut Lions Club members Jim Hart, left, and Ed Mee talk about preparations for the FLC sponsored Hole-In-One Shoot Out on the grounds adjacent to farragutpress, 11863 Kingston Pike. Shoot Out runs Aug. 14-17, with top finishers moving to Willow Creek Golf Club for a hole-in-one chance to win the Smart car at 6:30 p.m., Monday, Aug. 25.

Kingston Pike on four consecutive days: 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., Thursday and Friday, Aug. 14-15; 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 16, and noon to 6 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 17. Paying $5 for two balls or $10 for five, participants will tee off from roughly 90 yards away looking to be among the top three closest to the pin each day. The pin, which has no hole, will have a specially-cut “green” of roughly 20 feet in diameter, 10 feet all around from the pin, Mee said. “You can shoot as many times as you want.” Those who finish top three each of the four contest days earn the right to tee off for a hole-in-one opportunity on No. 11 hole (165 yards) at nearby Willow Creek Golf Club starting at 6:30 p.m., Monday, Aug. 25. Any of the 12 who sinks a hole-in-one wins the Smart Passion Coupe. In the unlikely event of two or more holes-in-one, tiebreaker would be an

extra tee-off round where the ball closest to the hole wins the car, Mee said. In addition to winning a chance to shoot for the Smart car at WCGC, daily prizes will be awarded Aug. 14-17. Firstplace prizes include Biltmore tickets and Samsung tablet; second-place prizes include movie tickets and a grill plus gift basket, and third-place prizes include a Fisher Tire Co. certificate. No pre-registration is required, “Just show up” on one of the four days within the designated time, Mee said. As many as six participants at one time can take their closest to the hole swings, Hart said. Parking will be allowed on the westernmost Ingles parking lot area (closest to farragutpress), Mee said. “Six to eight” committee members and volunteers will be on hand to assist participants and oversee the event, Mee said.

“A couple of tents to keep people out of the sun,” which will be adjacent to the tee-off location, also serves as the sign up location for participants according to Wayne Stormer, FLC and committee member. Irons of all sizes, left and right-handed, will be available. Or participants can use their own clubs, Mee said. “We’re going to do our best to have everybody covered.” Mee said he’s “very appreciative” to all who are volunteering time and/or resources for the Shoot Out. “Without this location, I don’t know where we’d hold it,” he added. Mee gave special praise to Tony Cox, president of Republic Newspapers, Inc. and general manager of Horne Radio, LLC, for his Shoot Out publicity work. “Elaine Grove has worked wonderfully with us,” Mee said about farragutpress See SHOOT OUT on Page 17

advertising manager/associate publisher. “And all the sponsors that have paid in and given us money to set up.” Hart said Scott Perkins, WCGC PGA Head Professional, and other club officials “have been absolutely fantastic with us.” Perkins “came up here and looked

over what we had, and he’s helped us with clubs,” Hart added. “He’s helped us with thinking this process through.” One hundred percent of Lions Club proceeds go to the following programs according to Mee: vision testing and eyeglasses for the needy; KidSight Outreach Program screening; Tennessee Lions Eye Center at Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital; East Tennessee Lions Eye Bank; Lions Volunteer Blind Industries;

Leader Dogs For the Blind; Lions World Services For the Blind; Recording For the Blind and Dyslexic; Remote Area Medical; Friends of Tennessee Infant Parents Services and Lions Club International Foundation. For more information, call Mee at 865661-0092. Mee recalled becoming familiar with FLC because he and his sons, Shawn and Chad Mee, participated in the old Shoot

Outs. “We’d go by there at Kingston Pike and [his boys] would say, ‘Hey dad, we want to do that,’” Mee recalled about Shawn and Chad reacting to Shoot Out advertising signs. “Finally, on a Sunday, I give in to go do it. I don’t remember what year it was.” The other four committee members are Tom Nitz, Norvell Burow, Gerri Crutchfield and Carl Leonard.

No. 16 (par 3, 214 yards): “Probably the most difficult par 3 on the course. Very long, it’s about 225 from the back tee. A good, wide green; bunker on the right. You’re hitting over the water, a big, huge pond.”

No. 17 (par 4, 458 yards): “A pretty long par 4. One of the more difficult par 4’s on the golf course. Dogleg’s to the left. The second shot is uphill. You kind of have to cut the corner if you want to have a mid-iron in there. You will see some of the longer knockers hit a 3-wood off there and just play for the dogleg. But if you do it 3-wood you’re going to have a longer second shot. The green is uphill. The green has some slope to it, front to back. It’s kind of difficult to get up and down if you do miss that green.”

No. 18 (par 5, 597 yards): “Good distance. The tee shot is very difficult because there’s huge trees on the right, so if you hit down the right side at all you’re going to be blocked on your second shot. And there’s also a bunker on the left side. You’ve got to hit the tee shot down the left side for your second shot. For most people it’s a three-shot hole. Your third shot, from roughly a hundred yards, is to a green surrounded by a big pond. Pretty good-sized green, bunker on the left side. In the past they’ve moved the tee up and enticed guys to go for [the green] in two, which can happen. Your second shot, if you go for it in two, is all carry over water. A great finishing hole where you can maybe see an eagle if the [pin is] up, and some birdies.”

During the Knoxville Open

The world’s greatest wines seem to always earn high marks in the global press. That’s the result of the perfect application of passion and talent. Wines with famous names and pedigrees definitely command a higher price — but they reward with an undeniable quality year after year.

The World’s Greatest Wines It used to be nearly impossible to obtain a steady supply of fine wines in Knoxville, but you can find great wines from the world’s most celebrated producers on a yearround basis at Turkey Creek Wine & Spirits. We even carry wines rated 90 points* or higher by the most discerning wine critics at prices as low as $8.99. So no matter what your budget, you can always find something exceptional.

Wine Is Not An Afterthought (To Us) We’re not a “package store” — we didn’t add wine after it became popular. We opened as a wine specialty store, and after just eleven short years, and a lot of hard work, we’ve grown into the largest seller of fine wine in the metropolitan Knoxville area. Yes, it’s true, we do carry the big brands, but our passion will always be the gems — the best wines we can source from around the world, some new to America, and some with well-deserved international reputations. Even if you already have a favorite liquor store, you should still choose Turkey Creek Wine & Spirits whenever you need a guaranteed great wine for a special occasion, just to be sure. Because we’ve always been dedicated to making Knoxville a world class wine market. One great score after another. ©2014 Turkey Creek Wine & Spirits, LLC 10903 Turkey Dr., Knoxville TN 37934.
