Strudwick breaks down News Sentinel Open course Former LPGA Rookie of the Year expresses respect for Fox Den Country Club’s degree of challenge
■
ALAN SLOAN asloan@farragutpress.com
Twenty years after accomplishing a monumental feat on the Ladies Professional Golf Association Tour, named its Rookie of the Year in 1993, Suzanne Strudwick is teaching 50 Farragut junior girls, ages 9-13, the game of golf as Fairways & Greens’ director of junior development. Still a card-holding LPGA Tour member after 14 years on tour, Strudwick is the new head coach of Carson-Newman University’s Women’s Golf team. Having played Fox Den Country Club’s course “about five or six times,” Strudwick also has witnessed several News Sentinel Opens at FDCC. She expressed a special respect — from a professional perspective — for the 44-year-old venue, which is set to host the 2013 News Sentinel Open presented by Pilot Thursday-Sunday, Aug. 15-18. “I think it is a tricky golf course,” Strudwick said about the Par 71, 7,071yard course. “I’m amazed every year as to how low the scores are. I really don’t think it’s that easy.” However, “These guys hit it so far, they make these courses look silly now,” Strudwich added. “I think it’s the caliber of the tour pros these days, its just amazing to me, of how well they hit it and how well they manage their games now. … You will play that course and hit every club in your bag. It really will examine everything. I really like it. I enjoy it. “The front nine is where you can let your driver loose a little bit more” 4 • EVERYTHING GOLF 2013
because fairways “are a lot more open.” With much narrower fairways from No. 11 through No. 14, “The back nine is all about scoring and all about placement … they cannot hit their driver so much,” she said. “It’s almost two distinct” types of holes. “I’ve heard the average is about eight to nine drivers a round.” Strudwich breaks down, hole by hole, how she thinks the Web.com Tour field should play the course:

No. 1 Par 4, 482 yards (downhill slope off tee): “Typically, there’s going to be some nerves involved teeing off on the first hole, so play it safe and aim for middle left [off the tee]. … If you’re going to miss it, miss left. If you hug the right side, you can get yourself into some trouble. … Your tee shot is paramount. “If you hit the fairway, the trouble there is a bunker on the left, and then trees and a hill on the right. … If you know you’re not going to hit the green, they play a lay-up shot.” “It’s a fairly easy hole to make a birdie. … It’s a big green, it’s got some undulation to it. … Get it as close as you can on that third shot.”
No. 2 Par 3, 193 yards (downhill off tee with water fronting green): “One thing at Fox Den pros probably don’t take in account so much, is that it does tend to be windy. And with the elevation change that that course has, I see a lot

of pros over-clubbing on that hole. So it’s probably half a club less that what you think. “And if it hits the front edge, it will roll up that green because it sits down and it’s relatively flat, and it tends to be a little harder.”
No. 3 Par 4, 409 yards (uphill all the way,
slight dogleg): “You walk off there with a 4 and you’ve done well. … Premium bunkering up around the greens, so your second shot is to an elevated green where you can’t see the pin.” Off the tee with a driver, “Hit the fairway middle-right, that’s a good approach. to the left, and there’s out-of-bounds on the right. I saw a lot of shots from the tee box, balls that were going just too far. So it’s probably not a driver off the tee on that one. … You hit down into the fairway and then back up. You can run out of fairway, so that one probably would be a 3-wood off the tee.

Par 4, 400 yards: “That one is fairly easy. … It’s not a difficult hole. That would be a birdie hole opportunity. … Probably not a driver off the tee.”
No. 9 Par 4, 421 yards: (downhill off tee, then uphill to the green): “You’ve just got to watch the corners. Probably not a driver off the tee. Make sure if you cut the corner you do it right. … With 9 being back up the hill and into the green, again you can’t see the bottom of the green, so you’re elevation change is knowing how hard the green is, how much release and pin placement to be able to attack it.”

Par 4, 421 yards
No. 10 Par 5, 561 yards: “Kind of similar to No. 1, but not the elevation. This one is just a straightaway, long par 5. Just curls around to the right. Again, I would say I lot of them might be able to go for it in two. But if you don’t lay up to a yardage that you know, there’s not a lot of trouble on that apart from the out-of-bounds because of the driving range on the left.” “A slight fade off the tee box is probably a good play, and then either go for it or lay up to your favorite yardage. Again, an undulating, smallish green, so having a comfortable wedge into that green is paramount because you don’t want a long putt. Those greens can get you. They get really crusty by mid-August. If you’re above the hole, you’re better off being short of all the holes putting up into it, instead of being long putting down. … On these par 5s, it just really knowing your yardage and what your wedges can do.”

You’re on a slight slope of the fairway. So the fairway’s running away from you. Again, it’s not going to be a driver off the tee, because otherwise if you miss
it you’ll either be in the rough or in the trees. “And the fairway is not flat, it’s slopey on both 11 and 12. It’s small greens, slight doglegs. Again, they’re just going to have wedges or short irons for their second shots, even with hitting a 3-wood or 2-iron off the tee box.”
No. 13 Par 3, 166 yards: “The little short one. That one has got a fairly small, narrow green. And again, it’s a little exposed out there so the wind can catch it. To me it’s all about the green on that one and just aim really accuSee OPEN on Page 12

rate. You can get into some trouble if you miss the green because of the slopes. … They’re going to be hitting 8-, 7-iron. It’s fairly level.”
No. 14 Par 4, 368 yards: “Again, that’s a narrow, real short hole. Probably going to have a 3-iron, 2-iron off the tee. … There’s more trees and there’s more doglegs. Slopey. … Long, narrow green.”
No. 15 Par 4, 427 yards: “It slopes from left to right, so you want to hit your driver middle left because it will start sloping down. And then it’s a straight downhill shot into the green. Small green. An elevation change again. A big change from hitting down into the green. Probably again, not a driver off the tee. “Green tends to be a little firmer on that one because it’s sitting down a little bit, so the ball might release a little bit further on that green. They’ll probably be hitting 7-iron into it, so they’re
getting a lot of spin.”
No. 16 Par 3, 214 yards (big pond fronts green). “That one is probably the signature hole. That’s the one that [many] spectators go to. A lot of noise. … They’ll experience a lot of noise because of all the hoopla around that. It’s a good learning experience hole.” “Again, it’s very open, [you’re] hitting across water. It’s a big, sloping green. You’re wide open, so what the pros might feel back on the tee box is not necessarily the wind on the green,
so they have to pay attention to the green being exposed and quite windy. And they’re kind of sheltered back there on the tee box.”
No. 17 Par 4, 458 yards: “A fairly long slog of a hole. It’s just slightly uphill and around the corner. That green is narrow, and there’s a couple of dips on the side of the greens that if you miss it on the left or the right, you’ve got awkward chip shots. … Seventeen is sort See OPEN on Page 14

But it’s a tough green to hit, and then you’re almost going to feel like you’re in Scotland if you miss the green. … It won’t be automatically getting your lop wedge out. You can chip and run it. I’ve seen pros take their hybrids and chip and run it through those slopes. “It’s kind of fun. It’s a good spectator green to go watch, because you’ll see a lot of the guys being creative.”
Par 5, 597 yards (pond fronts green): Eighteen is the fun hole for the spectators. … They tend to hit the ball middle right on that one. Kind of hug the tree line a little bit more to have a shorter hit into the green. It’s downhill. They’re typically hitting probably 2-irons, 3-irons into that green. It’s pretty much an island green. “It’s a tough second shot because the fairway slopes away from them. It’s downhill. The green’s downhill. And that green can get a little crusty by Sunday, so anything on the front will release. If spectators “could get a little clos-

The world’s greatest wines seem to always earn high marks in the global press. That’s the result of the perfect application of passion and talent. Wines with famous names and pedigrees definitely command a higher price — but they reward with an undeniable quality year after year.
The World’s Greatest Wines It used to be nearly impossible to obtain a steady supply of fine wines in Knoxville, but you can find great wines from the world’s most celebrated producers on a yearround basis at Turkey Creek Wine & Spirits. We even carry wines rated 90 points* or higher by the most discerning wine critics at prices as low as $8.99. So no matter what your budget, you can always find something exceptional.
Wine Is Not An Afterthought (To Us) We’re not a “package store” — we didn’t add wine after it became popular. We opened as a wine specialty store, and after just ten short years, and a lot of hard work, we’ve grown into the largest seller of fine wine in the metropolitan Knoxville area. Yes, it’s true, we do carry the big brands, but our passion will always be the gems — the best wines we can source from around the world, some new to America, and some with well-deserved international reputations. Even if you already have a favorite liquor store, you should still choose Turkey Creek Wine & Spirits whenever you need a guaranteed great wine for a special occasion, just to be sure. Because we’ve always been dedicated to making Knoxville a world class wine market. One great score after another. ©2013 Turkey Creek Wine & Spirits, LLC 10903 Turkey Dr., Knoxville TN 37934.
