Five teams battle for bronze cowboy hat Old rivals clash along with three new 3-Minute HWWW match-ups Three brand new rivalries have sprung up among farragutpress’s How the West Was Won, presented by 3-Minute Magic Carwash annual five-team high school football competition for 2013. And speaking of five, 2013 marks the fifth anniversary of 3Minute’s sponsorship of HWWW, courtesy of 3-Minute owner Jim Rooney. “It’s an honor to do it,” Rooney said about the annual competition where Farragut, Hardin Valley Academy, Bearden, Christian Academy of Knoxville and Knoxville Catholic annually battle for the best regular season record. “We’re proud to be the sponsor of How the West Was Won.”

In addition to 10 weeks of competition, Rooney also said he enjoys the season-ending banquets where the farragutpress/3Minute champion is presented the traveling bronze cowboy hat award. “We get to meet the players and the parents of the players, and the coaches, and talk to them directly and present an award to them,” said Rooney, whose 3-Minute locations are just outside of Farragut off Lovell Road, Lenoir City and Fountain City. “We make a connection with the families, and those connections last. “We see them come back to our car washes, we see them in the community at grocery stores,” Rooney added. “We all

have common experiences, both at the car wash as well as in football. So it’s just nice to be able to thread the two together with the community.” Only about five miles apart, Farragut and HVA will play each other for the first time ever in a varsity regular season game: Friday evening, Oct. 4, at FHS’s Bill Clabo Field. The Hawks join Farragut in District 4-AAA, having moved from 3-AAA. “That rivalry is going to be a fun and healthy one that’s going to last for many years,” Rooney said. Eddie Courtney, FHS head coach, said “it’ll be a big night for us, just like Bearden’s a big night for us. The communities are so close to each other and

people know each other. “On our schedule, it’s hard to believe we’re going to have another big game. … They’ll be some added attention to it just because we know some of those kids, and they know our kids,” Courtney added. Wes Jones, HVA head coach, labeled it “a great opportunity for our school. I know our principal [Sallee Reynolds] is excited about it since her husband [Michael Reynolds] is principal at Farragut. The Hawks also begin another new HWWW rivalry, as Knoxville Catholic travels to HVA Sept. 27. CAK, two-time defending 3Minute HWWW champs and twotime defending Class 2A state champs, begins a new rivalry

with Catholic as the Irish move down from District 4-AAA to District 4-AA. That showdown will be at KCHS Sept. 6. About the Irish-Warriors new rivalry, Rooney said, “Those two schools are fun to watch. They have fantastic programs. Great following, great leadership, great coaching. “It’ll be fun to see which one is going to come out on top.” Rusty Bradley, CAK head coach, said he was “excited about it because it’s a new team that we’re playing. I think CAK may have played them back in 2002. “Obviously two schools being so close, it’s such a natural rivalry, the kids knowing each other,” Bradley added.

Devrin Young, 19

Volunteers The University of Tennessee

A new sense of vigor is noticeably present around The University of Tennessee football program thanks to the arrival of new head coach Butch Jones, and the area players on the 2013 Volunteers squad say they can see a difference. The Vols suffered through a third consecutive losing campaign in 2012 but Tennessee is looking to turn things around in 2013. Two years ago, it was a sputtering offense that led to the team’s woes. Last year, it was a porous defense that was the downfall in Tennessee’s second consecutive 5-7 season. Jones, the former University of Cincinnati head coach, arrived last December and immediately began making changes. He brought along his staff, which has worked together for a long time and the players immediately saw things get better. “These are tremendous coaches,” said junior kick returner Devrin Young. “It’s changed here and these coaches have created a family atmosphere. “I can go to any of the coaches and talk to them Justin Worley, 14 about anything that I need to.” Young, a Bearden graduate, is one of three players from West Knox County who figure to see significant playing time this season. The others, Daniel Hood (a redshirt senior, who entered fall camp as the starting nose tackle) and Kyler Kerbyson (a redshirt sophomore, slated to be a backup right offensive guard) graduated from Knoxville Catholic High School. All three of those players have been around since Tennessee started taking its lumps under former head coach Derek Dooley three years ago. Dooley won just four Southeastern Conference games during a tumultuous tenure that ended when he was fired after a humiliating loss to Vanderbilt in Nashville last November. It’s a new year on Rocky Top and the Vols are looking to erase the painful memories of three losing seasons. The last two years, Tennessee has failed to make a bowl game and that doesn’t sit well with Hood or Kerbyson, who profess to

be longtime Volunteers’ fans. “Before I got here, I remember watching the games on Saturday and they hurt when I was in high school,” Kerbyson said. “Growing up here, I was always a Tennessee fan.” Kerbyson was a high school teammate of Hood’s and the Tennessee defensive lineman is hoping that the Vols can right things during his senior season. “It would mean everything to me if we could have a winning season and make it to a bowl game,” said Hood, who is playing for his third Tennessee coach in five years. “For the seniors, this is it.” The Vols’ 2013 defense was arguably the worst in the program’s storied history. Tennessee often looked lost on defense last year. This season, Jones and his staff have simplified things. And Hood said he can see a big difference. “We get the call and we run the defense,” he said. “We don’t have to make checks. “It’s a lot faster and we can just play.” Jones simplified the defensive scheme. He also has added an element of leadership, which appeared to be sorely lacking last season. “Leadership is the key to every successful team,” Young said. “You have your chiefs and you have your Indians and you have to choose which road you go down. “Coach Jones said that he’ll give you the answers on the tests, you just have to listen to him.” When Jones arrived, he immediately set a standard where the players had to hold one another accountable. “People are attacking everything a whole new way and nobody wants to be the one who doesn’t do what he’s supposed to do,” Kerbyson said. “The coaches have been working together for a long time and they’re all on the same page.” The trio of Young, Hood and Kerbyson are not the only local players who will don the Orange and White this season. Wide receiver Josh Smith and offensive tackle Brett Kendrick (Christian Academy of Knoxville) will begin their freshman seasons.

‘The Voice’ speaks Bob Kesling talks 2013 Vols, Butch Jones and a lesson in humility Before shedding some light on Butch Jones’ Tennessee Volunteers Football team for 2013, Bob Kesling recalled a lesson in humility as a UT walk-on freshman fullback from Ohio in 1972. It happened during the late stages of a freshman game in Nashville against Vanderbilt. Bob Davis, then UT Freshman Football head coach, “called up to the sideline, and he said, ‘Kesling, get in there at tailback. I’m thinking, ‘tailback? What a great decision I’ve made to come to The University of Tennessee,’” said Kesling, “Voice of the Vols” since 1999 in both football and men’s basketball, as featured speaker at The Rotary Club of Farragut’s Wednesday, July 31 meeting at Fox Den Country Club.. “I’m going to score touchdowns and be a big star in the SEC. This could not have worked out any better for me.’ “And before I go into the game, I said, ‘coach Davis, I’ve got to let you know I’ve never played tailback in an actual game. … Coach Davis looks at me and says, ‘[Heck] son, I know that, you don’t think we’re going to give you the ball do yah?’” Kesling added to huge Rotarian laughter. “So, I got a pretty good idea that I wasn’t going to be a great football player.” About Jones, in his first year as Vols head coach after head stints at Central Michigan and Cincinnati, “He’s come in and kind of revitalized the program, pumped live into it,” Kesling said.

“He’s brought a calmness to it, he’s brought a lot of enthusiasm to it. “He’s brought a work ethic to it that you won’t believe,” Kesling added. “I remember the days when I was playing … if you did 16 or 18 110s [110-yard sprints], you thought that was a lot and you could barely make it. They did 52 110’s the other day.” As for evaluations, “I think Butch has got to the point where sees the talent. He understands that there’s a reason why Tennessee could not close out games the past couple of years,” Kesling said. “So, you know there’s a talent level there, but there’s an attitude about trying to get guys [to win]. Look how many close games Tennessee has lost the last four years. It’s almost incredible. “Last-second drives that you couldn’t cash in, or last-second plays that you gave up on defense, or penalties [such as] jumping offsides. So many little things that Butch thinks are actually fixable,” Kesling added. However, “Depth is obviously going to be an issue this year,” Kesling said. “You’ve got to have great depth in the SEC. “That’s where the recruiting comes in, and Butch is doing an unbelievable job recruiting,” Kesling added about a 2014 commitment class currently rated No. 1 by a few of the nation’s top evaluation publications. “Every single day it seems like he’s out getting somebody that maybe nobody thought Tennessee had a chance to get, which is a good

sign. … They’re getting former players’ sons that are recruiting other players’ sons. Right now there’s a lot of momentum. “He’s got probably the most precious thing to sell that recruits want to hear: he’s got playing time. … He’s going to lose his entire offensive line next year. … He’s got playing time to sell at wide receiver. He’s got playing time to sell at running back. He’s got playing time to sell all over the defense, and that’s

attractive to thes players, and that’s why Tennessee is getting so much attention right now.” Moreover, “He’s relentless in his work ethic,” Kesling said of Jones. Kesling also pointed out that a Jones recruit at Central Michigan was “the No. 1 pick in the [NFL] draft this year,” which was Eric Fisher, All-American offensive lineman. “Butch has been selling that to his recruits,” Kesling added.
