3 Minute Magic sponsors farragutpress How the West Was Won for fourth year Five westside teams battle for Division I prize Christian Academy of Knoxville is hungry for a double repeat in 2012, having claimed the farragutpress How the West Was Won, presented by 3 Minute Magic Carwash championship en route to a Class 3A state football title last season. With last season’s powerpacked Warriors offense returning almost intact, that might happen. However, four other TSSAA Division I westside high schools will compete for farragutpress HWWW, a unique and popular West Knox County contest rewarding the best regular season record. Farragut, Hardin Valley

Academy, Bearden and Knoxville Catholic — four Division I programs all larger than CAK — are vying to grab HWWW annual rotating award, a bronzed Stetson cowboy hat. HWWW contest has been made possible in recent seasons thanks to Jim Rooney, 3 Minute Magic Carwash owner/operator. “I think it’s just a fantastic sponsorship, being connected to the young people in our community is vital to the growth of our business,” Rooney said. “I’ve been involved in youth sports for the last 15 years. It’s hard to break away from that. “I’m looking forward to

another great year of football in West Knox County and being the sponsor for How the West Was Won,” Rooney added. “It’s a great honor and we look forward to doing it for many years to come.” Among Division I’s five 3 Minute HWWW teams, CAK is the only one that doesn’t play any of the other four. However, with this contest, “It’s a way to compete against all the other teams in the area without actually playing them,” Warriors head coach Rusty Bradley said. “Kinda keeps us competing against each other. “Knowing the caliber of the teams that we’re competing against for that award, obvi-

ously it’s a huge challenge but it’s something that we’re excited about,” Bradley added. Eddie Courtney, FHS head coach, also expressed enthusiasm for HWWW contest. “I think the How the West Was Won rivalry is certainly a very positive thing for West Knox County,” Courtney said. “There’s a lot of great football programs in West Knox. It just adds a little bit more to what Friday night football’s all about.” If two or more of the five Division I teams end in a tie for best regular season record, most points scored would be used as the tie breaker. If that number also was the same,

then most points given up would be considered. The other HWWW Division I head coaches — HVA’s Wes Jones, Bearden’s Brad Taylor and Catholic’s Scott Meadows — also have expressed strong support for the contest. Courtney also pointed to “bragging rights, and kids get to recognize their accomplishments for having a successful season” as contest incentives. About CAK capturing its first-ever HWWW crown and winning its first-ever state title last season, “It was exciting to watch,” Rooney said. “I would love to see a state championship come out of the West Knox community.”

Admirals

FARRAGUT HIGH SCHOOL

When the Farragut High School football team finally takes the field the Admirals will hope to culminate an offseason of labor. The Admirals made an early exit from the 2011 playoffs and went 7-5 last season. Farragut didn’t sit around brooding over a disappointing campaign. “We started working as soon as we could,” Admirals senior center Patrick Doucette said. “Making an early exit from the playoffs is not something that we’re used to.” The Admirals, who open the season Aug. 17 with a tough road test against Kingsport Dobyns-Bennett, hit the weight room in January in preparation for one of East Tennessee’s toughest schedules. The Ads compete in Tennessee’s toughest Class AAA district: District 4-AAA features the likes of Bearden, Knoxville Catholic, two-time defending Class 6A champion Maryville, twotime Class 5A semifinalist West, Bearden, Heritage, William Blount and Lenoir City. “Our district is one of the toughest in the state,” senior offensive lineman Brett Dockery said. “It’s a great district and we play really good competition. “I love playing against those guys on Friday nights. It’s a great atmosphere and you get chill bumps.” Farragut’s 2012 squad features a bevy of talented veterans. Top returners include: Jackson Fain (senior, running back); Josh Gbendah (senior, running back); Bryan Phillips (junior, quarterback); Jake Bruce (senior, free safety); Franklin Bruce (senior, wide receiver); Aaron Suadi (junior, wide receiver); Billy Williams (junior, tight end); Jonathan King (senior, kicker/punter/quarterback); Christian Jetton (junior, outside linebacker); Blake Farmer (junior, wide receiver); Mitch White (junior, line-

backer); Charvis Coffey (junior, cornerback); Taylor Hunt (senior, cornerback); Java Rodriquez (junior, linebacker); Cody Reinke (senior, cornerback); J. Bo Partin (sophomore, outside linebacker); Chris Farner (junior, linebacker); Justin Brabson (junior, cornerback); Anwar Al Hussein (junior, defensive end); Doucette; Dockery; Nick Henningsen (senior, linebacker); C.T. Leavell (senior, noseguard); Andrew Saah (junior, offensive guard); Justin Mowery (senior, offensive tackle); and Mason Taylor (senior, offensive tackle). The Ads have the experience and talent to possibly make a deep playoff run but a tough slate of opponents will stand in the way —- as always. In addition to the rigorous conference schedule and an opener in Kingsport, Farragut also has home non-conference tilts against Oak Ridge Aug. 24 and McMinn County Sept. 7. Longtime head coach Eddie Courtney said

“These guys have been working hard and they’re ready to go.” - Eddie Courtney Admirals head coach

Bryan Phillips 8

that he routinely schedules some of the state’s best teams. “We take pride in our schedule,” Courtney said. “We want people to respect us. “We play in the toughest district and we have three tough non-district opponents in Kingsport, Oak Ridge and McMinn County. In high school, you get the opportunity to play 10

games. Last year, nine of the 10 teams we played made the playoffs.” Courtney said his team’s biggest strength is experience. He’s also commended his veteran team’s work ethic. “We had a great spring and a great summer,” he said. “These guys have been working hard and they’re ready to go.”

THE PROGRAM

Hawks H ARDIN V ALLEY A CADEMY

When Hardin Valley Academy opens the 2012 football season it must replace the bulk of its offensive production. Running back Dorian Eskridge graduated and took the Hawks’ biggest offensive weapon with him. Expectations at Hardin Valley are high as always but some younger players must step up if the Hawks are to make the playoffs for the third consecutive year. Hardin Valley went 6-5 in 2011 and dropped a 24-21 heartbreaker to Sevier County to end the season. Hardin Valley graduated its first-ever fouryear class after last season and head coach Wes Jones and the Hawks are eager to begin the 2012 season. “We’re ready to go,” Jones said. “We had spring practice in January because we had our whole secondary run track.” The Hawks lost several talented players but the cupboard is far from bare as this year’s squad aims to build on the team’s recent success. “We’ve grown as a team and a family,” said senior linebacker Matt Rabren, who was the Hawks’ leading tackler. “I’m looking forward to being coached by coach Jones and coach [Paul] Maynard [defensive coordinator].” The Hawks will open the 2012 campaign at Bearden Aug. 17 in a game that has become one of Knox County’s rivalry tilts. The two teams will meet for the third time. The Bulldogs routed the Hawks in the 2010 playoffs before Hardin Valley returned the favor in the season opener last season. “The team’s really looking forward to it [the season opener against the Bulldogs],” said Hawks senior running back Morgan Knight, who along with Demonte Felton, will see significant

time at running back. “It should be a great game. It will be fun.” HVA certainly had fun against Bearden last year. The Hawks opened the 2011 campaign with a 32-0 victory over the Bulldogs. Last season, Hardin Valley found its identity and the squad is looking to build on 2011’s success. “When we first started, kids came in here from everywhere,” Rabren said. “Last year, we became Hardin Valley Hawks.” One thing the Hawks couldn’t find was a consistent passing game. “In the six games we won last year, we completed one pass,” Jones said. “We threw the ball but we only completed one pass.” Hardin Valley enters the 2012 season looking for a quarterback as junior Joseph Underwood and senior Jon Beatty will compete for the starting job. Beatty made one start last season. “One of our team weaknesses will be lack of experience,” Jones said. “This may be the

“We’ve grown as a team and a family,” - Matt Rabren

most athletic team we’ve had. “We’ll have some guys playing in different positions. Morgan and Demonte are probably faster than Dorian but they just don’t have a lot of experience.” Top returners include: Rabren; Knight; Felton (a junior who started in the secondary last season); Isaiah Burum (junior, defensive back); Nolan Blevins (senior, defensive end); Garrett Curtis (sophomore, defensive tackle); Jack DeFur (junior, wide receiver/ H-

back); Peyton Miles (sophomore, offensive lineman); Torey Rice (senior, fullback); Evan Hall (senior, offensive lineman) and Xavier Dumay (senior, offensive lineman). The Hawks, after winning just one game in 2009, have had two consecutive winning seasons and have made two straight playoff appearances. Hardin Valley, however, has yet to win a postseason game. This senior class is looking to change that.

THE PROGRAM

Bulldogs BEARDEN HIGH SCHOOL

Bearden High School’s football team suffered through a mediocre and streaky season in 2011. The Bulldogs, who were embarrassed in their season opener last year at Hardin Valley Academy, won their next four games and then dropped five out of six to finish the campaign. Bearden went 5-6 last year and had its season end with an opening-round playoff loss to District 4-AAA rival and two-time Class 6A state champion Maryville. The Bulldogs, who were the only team to tangle with the Red Rebels twice in 2011, wasted little time getting ready for the 2012 campaign, which opens at home against the Hawks Aug. 17. Bearden, like many of its district rivals including Farragut and Knoxville Catholic, is a year older and picked up some valuable lessons from a difficult campaign. “Our district poses a huge challenge for us,” said Bulldogs senior fullback/outside linebacker Jake Jolley. “We did a lot of hard work in the weight room and we have a lot of unity.” Bearden’s 2012 squad features five returning starters on offense and 10 on defense and the ‘Dawgs have a swagger this season. “We feel confident because of our experience,” senior quarterback Nicky Frizen said. “We have some new guys, too. “This year, there’s going to be a huge difference. It’s going to be like a difference between a varsity and JV team.” Bearden, which took its share of lumps last season, is obviously looking to turn things around, but it won’t be easy. “We play against good competition

and we know this is not going to be easy,” Frizen said. “This is a tough, tough district and I love playing against this competition.” Bearden’s schedule includes non-league tilts against the Hawks, Morristown East (Aug. 24) and Rhea County (Sept.7) The Bulldogs, who open conference play against William Blount Thursday, Aug. 30, have road games at Farragut, Lenoir City and Heritage. Bearden hosts Maryville Sept. 28. The Bulldogs will close the season with consecutive home games against two-time Class 5A semifinalist West and Catholic, which missed the playoffs last season. “We play in a tough district and that’s the same story every year,” Bearden head coach Brad Taylor said. “We return a lot of guys and we have a lot of experience and hopefully, that will lead to some success.

“We feel confident because of our experience,” - Nicky Frizen Bulldogs senior quarterback

Christian Robinson 20

“Our biggest concern is staying healthy. We feel like we have some potential but everybody has potential at this point.” Top returners include: Frizen; Jolley; Trent Waters (senior, running back/linebacker); Ethan Pollack (senior, wide receiver/defensive back); Kole Matherly (junior, inside linebacker); Seth Grogan (senior, offensive guard); Christian Robinson (sen-

ior, running back/defensive back); Chandler Greer (junior, offensive lineman/defensive lineman); Caleb Bartlett (junior, offensive lineman/defensive lineman); Gage Webb (senior, defensive lineman) and Isaiah McDaniel (junior, defensive back). Taylor also noted that he expects significant contributions from newcomers Griffin DeLong and Josh Walls.

Warriors CHRISTIAN ACADEMY OF KNOXVILLE

Christian Academy of Knoxville left the football field as Class 3A State Champions in 2011 and unlike most defending champs, the Warriors have the majority of their team back this season. Nobody, however, is talking about a repeat, but CAK would like nothing more than to return to Cookeville in 2012 “We’re not really thinking about that,” Warriors senior quarterback Charlie High said of the possibility of winning consecutive state championships. “We have 10 of our 11 starters back on offense and we’re just going to take things one game at a time. “We’re ready to go and I’m ready to get things started.” CAK went 13-2 in 2011 and culminated its campaign with a 42-14 rout of Milan in the Class AAA State Championship at Tennessee Tech. Two of the Warriors victories came against District 4-AA foe Alcoa. CAK snapped Alcoa’s run of multiple district titles. CAK’s second victory over Blount County’s Class AAA powerhouse came in the state semifinals and ended the Tornadoes string of seven consecutive state championships. Now, the Warriors are the hunted —- not the hunters. “Every time we play a team, it’s going to be their Super Bowl,” Warriors head coach Rusty Bradley said. “We’re circled on everybody’s calendar. “We’ve got a chance to repeat but we have to stay healthy. We were relatively healthy last year and our

goal is to take care of each day.” CAK returns its entire offensive line and that has High, one of Knox County’s most prolific quarterbacks, feeling pretty good about things early. “I feel good going into this year,” said High, who averaged 346.1 passing yards per game last season and set six records. “I feel even better than I did last year.” The Warriors’ potent aerial attack shouldn’t miss a beat in 2012 as High has many of his wide receivers back including seniors Josh Smith, Davis Howell and Frank Murchison. Senior fullback Corey Rathbone returns along with a quintet of offensive linemen, which includes: Brent Kendrick (senior, offensive tackle); Zach Jenkins (junior, offensive guard); William Gass (senior, center); Alec North (senior,

Charlie High 12

will also look to be an impact player. CAK returns one of the deepest squads in East Tennessee but the Warriors must answer a few questions. “A lot of things are up in the air,” Bradley said. The Warriors will begin their quest for a second consecutive state title Aug. 17 at Anderson County.

THE PROGRAM

Fighting Irish KNOXVILLE CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL Knoxville Catholic High School’s football team went 4-6 and missed the playoffs last season. The Irish took some tough losses. The Irish enter the 2012 season eager to turn the page. Catholic, which had one of the youngest teams in Knox County last season, took its share of lumps. “We’ve just got to win our games,” said Irish senior running back/linebacker Nolan Coulter. “My freshman year, we were state champions and my sophomore year, we made the playoffs. We had just as much talent as we did before and we lost to Columbia Central. “Last year, we had our chances against William Blount and Lenoir City and we didn’t get it done. We were inches away. Against William Blount, we had the ball inside the [Governors’] 20.” Despite the heartbreak of last season, the Irish never gave up and head coach Scott Meadows said that his team showed character during the tough times. “We were right there in a lot of our games and I was really proud of our guys,” Meadows said. “We were so young.” Now, the Irish players are a year older and hungry to return to the playoffs. “During the offseason, we came in and put together a little extra effort,” Coulter said. “We didn’t like how [last] season ended.” The Irish, who had just seven returning lettermen last year, return 38 this season. “Our strength is our game experience and we came back really hungry,” Meadows said. “We had a tough six-game stretch but our kids came in and just kept working.”

Key returners include: Jordan Anderson (sophomore, running back/defensive back); Logan Lacey (sophomore, quarterback/running back/inside linebacker); Tanner Sharp (sophomore, quarterback); Joey Cook (senior, wide receiver/defensive back); Coulter; Stuart Smith (senior, running back/linebacker); Cole Lombardo (senior, running back/defensive back); Hayden Varner (senior, tight end/linebacker); Reese Staley (senior, offensive lineman/inside linebacker; Will Easley, III (senior, offensive lineman/noseguard); Theo Sholly (senior, offensive lineman/noseguard); Dakota Raines (senior, offensive lineman/noseguard); Alex Smolens (senior, offensive lineman/defensive end); Tyler O’Brien (senior, offensive lineman/defensive end) and Zach Cole (senior, offensive lineman/defensive

end). Catholic, which opens its season against Central Aug. 17 at Blaine Stadium, has a savvy group of veterans but a trio of newcomers will also look to make an impact. Juniors Eric White (running back/linebacker), Erik Perfetto (running back/linebacker) and Logan Irwin (offensive lineman/defensive end) will look to make their mark.

The Irish can’t erase the memories of last season fast enough and Cole said that he and his teammates are eager to embark upon a schedule that includes some of East Tennessee’s toughest opponents. “I’m looking forward to the season and I’m looking forward to hitting someone other than us,” Cole said. “We were so close in a lot of games.”

THE PROGRAM

Spartans WEBB SCHOOL OF KNOXVILLE

Webb School of Knoxville football head coach David Meske makes no secret about his expectations for the 2012 season. “Our expectations are high just because of our five state championships,” Meske said. “Every year our goal is to win the state championship.” Webb, which went 9-3 in 2011, claimed Division II-A state titles in 2009 and 2010. The Spartans, however, are hungry after coming up short last season and for the Spartans, it’s about doing the little things. “Every time we won the state championship, we got better each week and if we do that again this year we should be pretty strong,” Meske said. “We don’t have a lot of depth and a school our size will probably have seven or eight players playing both ways.” Webb will open the 2012 campaign with 12 returning players including: Todd Kelly (a junior tailback and safety who has received a bevy of offers from Division I colleges); Jack Grayson (senior, quarterback and all-state punter); Aaron Blance (a senior running back/defensive back, who returns after leaving the school last season); Matthew Melton (a junior defensive back who was the Most Valuable Player in the 2010 state championship game); Skip Garner (senior, offensive tackle/defensive tackle); Robby Strachen (junior, linebacker and allstate placekicker); Brock Beeler (sophomore, wide receiver); Andrew Campbell (junior, offensive guard/defensive lineman); Kyle Dickson (senior, offensive tackle, defensive lineman); Gage Thompson (sophomore, offensive lineman); Johnny Chun (junior, quarterback/wide receiver/defensive back) and David Matthews (senior,

running back/linebacker). Joining the savvy corps battle-tested veterans is a quartet of newcomers that includes Liam Willougby (sophomore, tight end/ linebacker), Bennett Harrison (sophomore, linebacker), Te-Andre Moore (junior, linebacker) and Christopher Stephens (sophomore, running back). Grayson said that anything less than another trip to the state championship game would be a disappointment for the Spartans. “Obviously, we want another state championship,” Grayson said. “That’s all we’ve been talking about all summer. “This is all anyone wants.” Grayson also noted that Blance’s return to the Webb squad is a plus. “Aaron is a great player and it’s huge for us to have him,” Grayson said. “He wants a state

Don’t hide that hair under a helmet this football season.

championship as much as anybody.” Meske said his team’s strengths lie on both the offensive and defensive lines. He also added that Webb will have tremendous speed at the offensive skill positions and in the defensive secondary. “We have great skill kids on offense and they have tremendous speed,” Meske said. “Our offensive line is solid and we have two all-state players in our kicking game. “On defense, our defensive line and secondary are strong.” The Spartans lost all three starting linebackers last season. Meske, how-

ever, doesn’t necessarily consider that a weakness. “We lost all three of our linebackers but I don’t want to say that that’s a weakness [this year],” he said. “We just have a lack of experience there.” Webb begins the 2012 season with a showdown at Alcoa Saturday, Aug. 18. The Spartans opened the 2011 season with a loss at Maryville last season. But Meske said that his squad is eagerly anticipating the season opener against the Tornadoes. “We loved opening up at Maryville last year and the kids are looking forward to playing Alcoa,” Meske said.

Volunteers THE UNIVERSITY OF TENNESSEE

Last season’s ending couldn’t have been much worse for the University of Tennessee football team. The Volunteers closed out the 2011 campaign with a 10-7 loss to Kentucky in Lexington. It was Tennessee’s first loss to the Wildcats since 1984. The season-ending loss left the Vols sitting at home during the holiday season with the program’s third losing season in four years. Two area players who saw significant playing time last season are hoping that the Vols can recapture past glory this season. Devrin Young, a 2011 Bearden High School graduate, enrolled at UT after a stellar career with the Bulldogs. Knoxville Catholic High School product Daniel Hood started eight games on the defensive line last season as a redshirt sophomore. Young saw situational action at tailback and emerged as one of the squad’s top kick returners as the Vols went 5-7 overall and picked up their lone Southeastern Conference victory against in-state rival Vanderbilt at Neyland Stadium. This season both Young and Hood will be looking to expand their roles for Tennessee, which opens its 2012 campaign against North Carolina State Friday, Aug. 31 in the Georgia Dome in Atlanta. Young entered camp looking to be one of Tennessee’s feature running backs. Hood, on the other hand, hasn’t quite found a home in defensive coordinator Sal Sunseri’s defense. He’ll play and likely start. The only question is where. “Coach Sal has put me at every position on the [defensive] line,” said Hood, who recorded eight tackles and a sack as Tennessee’s nose tack-

“I strive to play like those players and be like those teams and when we don’t, I feel like I’ve failed.”

le last season. “It has been a challenge for me because you have four different people with different assignments. You also have four different calls. He has no preference of position. “I just want to play,” he said. He also wants, desperately, to see the Vols reverse fortune. “I grew up in the early 90s when it seemed like Tennessee only lost one game a year,” Hood said. “I strive to play like those players and be like those teams and when we don’t, I feel like I’ve failed.” Young, who left the Bearden program as one of East Tennessee’s most decorated running backs, is looking to contribute in 2012. He said, however, that he knows nothing will See VOLS on Page 18C

be easy in the SEC. “Me and the coaches talked a lot about what my role will be,” he said. “It depends on how much I improve and that all boils down to how hard I’m willing to work.” He’s pleased to have the opportunity to compete for the starting tailback position this season. “It’s definitely a blessing to be in the mix,” Young said. Young may understand that his work ethic will determine his success as a sophomore. But a running back is usually only as good as the offensive line.

The Vols had one of the nation’s worst ground attacks in 2011. Tennessee averaged a paltry 2.8 yards per carry as the offensive line struggled to keep running backs upright. The offensive line should be improved in 2012, according to Young. “It was just awesome to see how the line plays,” he said. “It’s safe to say that they’ve really improved. “They’ve really come together and bonded well. Our offensive line is just awesome.” Hood and Young are two of seven area players who were in camp for the Big Orange. Four Tennessee players; Austin Bolen (junior, fullback), Jacob Gilliam (junior, offensive lineman), Greg Grieco (junior, linebacker) and Michael Williams (sophomore, defensive back) all played
