The ‘Goode’ behind the Open

Martin Piller of Fort Worth, Texas, a 2008 Texas A&M graduate, holds up the crystal trophy he earned, along with $99,000, as champion of Web.com Tour’s 25th annual News Sentinel Open presented by Pilot in 2014. Rocky Goode, longtime NS Open volunteer, right, enjoys Piller’s big moment during a ceremony on the 18th green. Piller fired an 8-under-par 63 during the final round to finish 22-under par 262.

Chuck Cavalaris Special to farragutpress

If anything has managed to set the Web.com Tour stop in Farragut apart through the years, it would be how well the tournament is organized and managed by an army of dedicated volunteers. “People ask me all the time why I keep doing this, especially after all these years,” Rocky Goode, a Farragut resident, said. “I think it all goes back to being blessed in your own life and feeling a sense of responsibility to give something back to a community that has given you so much. Sure, everyone enjoys doing our jobs and being a small part of this … but the main thing is helping some very deserving charities in the town you call home.” The 28th annual News Sentinel Open presented by Pilot returns to Fox Den Country Club Aug. 17-20. Tournament week includes a junior clinic, Shootout, two Pro-Am events and, of course, culminates with the 72-hole competition for aspiring professionals who hope to advance to the PGA Tour. Close to $1 million has been raised for charitable contributions in a popular event that began in 1990 on the inaugural Ben Hogan Tour. For several years, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Knoxville was the primary beneficiary. Now several organizations reap the benefits. “I practically grew up at the Boys & Girls Club and my mother worked across the street,” Goode said. “I

know first-hand just how important that is.” Goode has helped make several key decisions through the years, and still does. The commercial insurance executive and retired SEC football referee currently is a replay official with the conference. He also was instrumental in getting the Knoxville Open moved to Fox Den Country Club in 1999. The tournament’s early years were played across the street at Willow Creek before the event moved to Three Ridges. “We just felt like West Knox [County] was a better location for several reasons,” said Goode, who was president of Fox Den board of directors and a good friend of tournament chairman, the late Jim Wakefield. Wakefield, the best friend the Knoxville Open ever had, passed away in February 2016. The champions’ crystal cup is now named in his honor: Jim Wakefield Memorial Trophy. “We felt like it was a natural fit for everybody to come watch professional golfers from all over the world come play our course. The logistics just made much more sense at Fox Den,” Goode said. It’s understandable for some members to be reluctant to basically give up playing privileges for most of the week, but reciprocal agreements with other clubs help. The lease agreement also has proven useful for Fox See GOODE on Page 10C

Six qualify for ‘Open’ at WC ■

The most impressive of the Web.com Tour News Sentinel Open Qualifier “top six,” among a field of 100 at Willow Creek Golf Club, has no experience playing at Fox Den Country Club. Ben Wolcott, 22, was top NS Open qualifier at 10-under par — which included a nationwide field representing California and New York plus about 15 international participants —Monday, Aug. 14. Looking ahead to his first professional event beginning today, Thursday, Aug. 17, “I get to play my first pro event in my home

state, and that means a tremendous amount to me,” said Wolcott, a native of Burns in Dickson County near Nashville. “This is something I’ve dreamed of since I was a kid. It’s pretty cool to be able to live it out.” A Second Team All-SEC golfer at Ole Miss where he just graduated, Wolcott sank 11 birdies and suffered just one bogey [par 5, No. 15] Monday. “I think it’s very fair,” Wolcott said about the WCGC course. “I think there was a premium on the

fairways today. So once you got on the fairway I think it was kind of right in front of you. “The pins weren’t in necessarily tough spots,” he added, “So you could just kind of fire away and take your looks as they came.” As for a key hole, “the first hole, maybe,” Wolcott said about No. 10. “I had a good look from about 15, 16 feet, and made it. That kind of got the day rolling. My putting confidence went up. See SIX on Page 14C

The rough will be up to record heights at Fox Den Country Club for 28th annual News Sentinel Knoxville Open presented by Pilot, but it remains to be seen whether it will have a significant impact on an assortment of worldclass golfing talent. As the TV commercial says, “These Guys Are Good!” … and they’re pretty straight shooters, too. The Web.com Tour returns to Farragut Aug. 17-20 with a $550,000 purse, $99,000 to the champion, along with playing privileges on the 2018 PGA Tour. Because the par-71 layout is relatively short by modern standards at just over 7,000 yards, Fox Den’s main defenses tend to be thicker grass and wind or other curveballs from Mother Nature. “It will be good to get the rough back up because of all the rain we’ve had,” said Scott Severance, FDCC course superintendent since 2004. “It should be between 3.5 inches and 5 inches, but it is as healthy and thick as it has ever been due to the early season rains.” As is the case with many others, Severance is tremendously impressed with the level of play that descends on Farragut every year. He has a great vantage point because the maintenance building is at the back of the practice range. “It’s amazing to watch these guys hit shot after shot and they have the yardages down to a few feet for every club,” he said. “They

are pretty doggone good. I honestly do not know if six inches of rough can stop them.” Barring weather complications, it figures to be another birdie fest. Former San Diego State standout J.J. Spaun finished at 26-under to win the 2016 Jim Wakefield Memorial crystal trophy — and stylish orange blazer — by one stroke over Sam Ryder. The outcome fittingly came down to birdie attempts on the 72nd hole: Spaun made his and Ryder barely missed. The victory helped Spaun secure a PGA Tour card. He ranks in the top 100 on this season’s money list with just more than $1 million. The fact it boiled down to a putting contest was not unusual. It takes a hot putter to average better than 6-under over four consecutive rounds. Higher rough usually means slightly higher scores and give more pros the chance to contend. “A lot of guys say they love playing here because it’s a shotmaker’s golf course and you can only hit the driver two, three or four times,” Severance said. “You have to hit every club in the bag … it’s not just a long knocker’s golf course and bomb it off the tee. That’s why guys love it — everybody has a chance.” Severance learned about golf at an early age because he grew up in the pro shop at Flint Golf Club in Michigan. One day he was politely asked to visit the maintenance shed for a while and became interested in agronomy. He is a 1994 graduate from Michigan State University Turf School and resides in Karns with his wife,

Alan Sloan

Scott Severance, center, Fox Den Country Club course superintendent, with assistant superintendents Martin Seagle, left, and Phil Bagsby. Preparing the course for Web.com Tour’s annual News Sentinel Open stop in August, the three men take a break at the clubhouse overlooking the 18th hole fairway, green and water fountain.

Meagan, and teenagers, Walker and Sydney. ”Working as a golf course superintendent is the only job I’ve ever had,” said Severance, whose career path includes stops at Pinehurst, North Carolina, Florence, South Carolina, and back to Flint. “After the second winter in Michigan, Meagan said she needed to live somewhere warmer and she sure hoped I would move with her. Fox Den was looking to do a rebuild of the greens and bunkers [in 2004] and we’ve been here ever since.” Hopefully, the local forecast will not have a repeat of the first weekend of August 2017 when the Fox Den men’s club championship was held. A thunderstorm on Friday night, Aug. 4, knocked

down five trees — including a nearly 200-year-old oak next to No. 8 fairway — and dumped almost two inches of rain on the course. By daybreak Saturday, numerous bunkers were washed out and branches and other debris were scattered. “It looked like a bomb went off,” said Severance, whose crew had worked tirelessly to get everything in tip-top shape. “I remember walking around and thinking, ‘What it the world just happened here?’ It’s definitely a huge challenge that you feel.” It didn’t take much to bring down a giant oak that was well over a century old in 1969 when Fox Den was built and designed by Willard C. Byrd and Bill Ber-

gin. The tops of several other trees also were damaged. It was back to square one for a course maintenance crew, which includes assistants Marty Seagle and Phil Bagby. The payroll shrinks from about 30 workers early in the summer to less than half by late July. The seasonal help includes several high school football players from Farragut, Bearden and Karns. “Once August rolls around, we rely more on a much smaller staff and four or five of my exassistants, some other volunteers and students from the UT Turf School,” Severance said. “It is a great learning experience for everyone.” See KEEPER on Page 11C

Basic information about 28th News Sentinel Open ■

Alan Sloan asloan@farragutpress.com

A field of 156 is ready for Web.com Tour’s Farragut stop, 28th annual NewsSentinel Open presented by Pilot. Many of Web.com’s top 25 money leaders — all of whom are on the verge of earning their PGA TOUR card — will tee off at Fox Den Country Club beginning Thursday morning, Aug. 17. [See Thursday and Friday tee times on page 4C] A $550,000 purse features $99,000 to the champion, which will be crowned after 72 holes Sunday evening, Aug. 20. A par 71 course for Web.com Tour, the FDCC course measures just beyond 7,100 yards.

Patrick Nichol, tournament director, estimated “about 24,000” spectators were on hand for last year’s NS Open “despite some bad weather on Sunday.” J.J. Spaun of Los Angeles hoisted the crystal Jim Wakefield Memorial Trophy in 2016, winning 27th Annual NS Open after finishing 26-under-par (258). Spaun nailed a 12-foot birdie putt on the 18th green to finish the final round at 66 (5-under). New for 2017 “are six totally new scoreboards … they’re like the ones you see on the PGA Tour,” Nichol said. “They’ll be two at [No.]18, one at 16, one at 13, and one [each] at 9 and 4.” Fox Den became a stop on what is now the Web.com Tour in 1999, with

Jeff Gove firing a four-day 277 to claim victory. His Fox Den triumph and overall performance that season helped elevate Gove to the PGA TOUR the following year. Under the leadership of famed golf course superintendent Willard Byrd (William Byrd and Associates) — credited for designing and constructing some of America’s finest courses — Fox Den Country Club course opened to members May 15, 1969. Ticket, parking information • Daily general admission ticket, $10, is valid one day only. Weekly general admission ticket, $25, is valid for entry on all tournament play days. Tickets will be held at will call and can be redeemed anytime throughout the

weekend. Tickets will be on sale each day of the tournament at the gate. Pre-sale and group purchases may be arranged by contacting tournament headquarters at 904-903-0157. To buy tickets online go to www.knsopen.com/. • Despite nearby construction, public parking off Smith Road remains at its traditional site in an open field two blocks north of Kingston Pike — but with reduced spaces due to the construction. Public parking is $5 each day, with proceeds donated to Shriners. Bus shuttles from Smith Road begin at 7 a.m., each of the four days, and run until one hour after play is completed.

Spectator perks • Fleming’s Ultimate 100, $175, is the ultimate view of the 18th hole all in the comfort of an indoor/outdoor air-conditioned hospitality suite. This suite provides all-inclusive catered food by Fleming’s and premium wine and spirits. Includes tournament admission for the day chosen. Ticket valid only for date selected. • Copper Cellar 19th Hole Pass, $150, offers the comfort and excitement of tournament golf in complete luxury. Pass provides entrance into 19th hole – all you can eat buffet provided by Copper Cellar Catering – beer, wine, mixed drink and soft drinks. Price includes tournament admission. Tickets will be held at will call. • Calhoun’s BBQ Shack at Heineken House, $80, allows spectators to remain near the action at the 16th green with full service hospitality, including food, in an outdoor setting. Spectators can sit back and watch players drive over the water to help reward fans with “Birdies for Thirty.” Price includes tournament admission. Tickets will be held at will call. Rocky Goode, left, long-time volunteer with News Sentinel Open presented by Pilot, is all smiles while surrounded by tournament volunteers and officials on the 18th green at Fox Den Country Club during last year’s Web.com Tour championship ceremony. J.J. Spaun of Los Angeles awaits his crystal Jim Wakefield Memorial Trophy after his winning total of 26-under-par (258). Den, which helped fund several upgrades and improvements. The past 18 years have given the Knoxville Open a stable home and, generally speaking, better location to the population base for volunteers. It also provides more accessible lodging and restaurants for players and caddies. A substantial monetary impact aside, there’s a tremendous sense of accomplishment for the outstanding tournament committee and approximately 300 volunteers. There’s no doubting this has been the backbone to the tournament’s success. Some put in a few hours and some are there all week from dawn to dusk. ”I’ve been around Rocky for 18 years,” tournament director Patrick Nichol said. “He’s a big part of this event and he cares about it very much. We’ve very lucky to

have him.” Goode even volunteers the use of his home near the 8th hole to one of the touring pros. Although it isn’t in Fox Den per se, he has a big house on four acres with a pool and a great place for cookouts. For golf pros who spend so much time on the road, the typical response is, “Yes sir, that will do just fine!” “Darren Stiles stayed here two years ago and he’s going to stay again this time,” Good said of the two-time Knoxville Open champion [2002 and 2012] and cancer survivor. “He’s a really nice guy.” Other houseguests during tournament week in the basement of Goode’s house included John Daly, Boo Weekly and Jimmy Walker. “Daly was so nice until his girlfriend got here — then his whole personality changed,” Goode said. “John said we had to have a cookout on Tuesday night and it had

to be Pittsburgh-style steaks and he went out and bought them. Boo Weekly is just a pleasure to be around. He said his new office was my swimming pool.” Being an avid fisherman, Weekly probably worked on his casting, too. Championship Committee: Todd Havron is the director of operations and Stan Norris is with the PGA Tour. Executive committee includes Goode, Rob Hardin, Angie Howell, Buck Jones, Sterling Owen IV and Terry Turner. Committee members are Cathy Amos (admissions/Flemings Hospitality); Hunter Baddour; Sonny Bailey Jr. (construction); Mae Barlow (Volunteer Village coordinator); Stephanie Bryson (admissions); David Bunn (ProAM); Dino Cartwright (media); Jonathan Cox & Hayden Echols (Clinic/Shootout); Butch Fore (transportation); Brad Hall (se-

NEWS SENTINEL OPEN PRESENTED BY PILOT

PAST CHAMPIONS Keeper From page 6C

The pros at FDCC The same can be said for touring pros who must survive a test of nerves with precise play. Scoring well at Fox Den is all about hitting fairways to maximize the birdie chances. Fairway bunkers are much more of a threat than green side bunkers. It is imperative to find the correct position on sharply bending fairways [called doglegs]. This is especially true on the front nine, which also has elevation changes at Nos. 5, 6, 7 and 9. The back is more flat with narrower fairways and the condos and houses are more noticeable. It all leads up to an excellent stretch of finishing holes and there’s no question about the course superintendent’s favorite. “The 16th,” Severance quickly said. “The [214 yard] par 3 over the water. The everyday golfer really has their hands full there. But these guys — especially with everything riding on it — are almost always up to the pressure.” It helps for tour officials to have the option to use forward tees on the par 5 18th for the final two rounds. “It’s so tempting for these guys to go for it in two,” Severance said. “Me? I get nervous just thinking about the pressure and the chances of dropping one in the pond in front of the green.” Putter’s Delight: The putting surfaces are A1 Bentgrass and the rest of course is 419 Bermuda. The Fox Den greens consistently have been praised as some of the best on the Web.com Tour and should roll about 11 or 11.5 on the Stimpmeter. “This part of the country is in a transition zone because of the warm weather,” Severance said. “The challenge is keeping the greens really good when it starts to dry out a little bit.” The greens could be even better because of a new verification process called Dry-ject used for a couple of years at Fox Den. Instead of punching holes in the greens and filling in with about 10 to 12 tons of sand, the high-pressure system injects air, water and a mixture deeper into the soil. Then about 20 tons of sand was used. “We know when the greens are very smooth and rolling true, these guys are going to make putts,” Severance said. “That’s what Kirk Triplett told me the year he won [2011]. He said, ‘When your greens are this good, we feel like we can make everything.’” It’s also what the Knoxville Open crowds love to see.

POWER RANKINGS: NEWS SENTINEL OPEN PRESENTED BY PILOT The Web.com Tour’s regular season is coming to a close for 2017. Two events remain before the Web.com Tour Finals and good results have never been more important. Ben Silverman proved just that last week at the Price Cutter Charity Championship presented by Dr. Pepper, as the Canadian’s win moved him into the top 25 from 63rd on the money list, and on the verge of earning a PGA TOUR card. This week, the Web.com Tour heads to Farragut, Tennessee, for the News Sentinel Open presented by Pilot, where last year it was J.J. Spaun who held off his friend Sam Ryder to capture the title en route to earning a TOUR card. Will the winner of this year’s event hold the same fate? Here are 10 Players to Watch this week in The Volunteer State.

Alan Sloan

Stephen Gangluff of Marysville, Ohio, tees off at No. 10, at Willow Creek Golf Club Monday, Aug. 14. It was the first sudden death playoff hole for Gangluff and three others during Web.com Tour News Sentinel Open Qualifier. Gangluff survived to qualify, the last of six, with a pair of pars on No. 10 and No. 11.

Six From page 1C

“Right from the jump you just kind of know it’s going to be a good day,” he added. Other NS Open qualifiers at Willow Creek were Casey Flenniken of Knoxville and David Gazzolo of Riverside, California [both 9-under] and Tayler Termeer of Lakeway, Texas [8-under]. Four others finished at 7-under, requiring a sudden death playoff to eliminate two of the four: Brad Adamonis of Coral Springs, Florida, Stephen Gangluff of Marysville, Ohio, Andrew McCain of Knoxville and Connor Arendell of Cape Coral, Florida. Adamonis’ 7-foot birdie putt on playoff hole No. 10 [par 5, 584 yards] earned him a trip across the street to Fox Den. Arendell had the lone bogey on 10 and was eliminated. Gangluff’s par on No. 11 [par 3, 177 yards] bested McCain, who missed a par putt after missing the green on 11 off the tee, and filled the final qualifier spot. Having played on the Web.com Tour “in 2002 and 2012,” Gangluff, 41, returns to Web.com Tour action at FDCC.

“At Fox Den, I think I’ve played the [Web.com Tour] there at least four times. The last year was 2011. Also 2007 and 2003 and 2004 as well,” he said. As for the Fox Den course, “I liked it. I haven’t played it since [the most recent] redo. I remember liking the tightness of it, and it’s got some curves to it, too. You just can’t go out there and bombs away. “I’ve played decent there before.” With limited knowledge about the FDCC course, Wolcott said he anticipates “the rough’s going to be up, the greens are going to be quick. “I think discipline’s going to be key,” he added. “Not getting too excited. It’s going to take a lot of patience.” Winning a pair of college tournaments as a Rebels senior before graduating last month, Wolcott also was an Academic All-American at Ole Miss. Wolcott said he had previously played at Willow Creek, as part of the Southern Junior Golf Tour, but that was eight years ago when he was just 14. “There was some views off the tee boxes that I remember, but other than that there was no course knowledge,” Wolcott said.
