2016: Farragut High School’s 2016 season was purely magical. Twice rallying from 28 points down to win during the playoffs, including the Class 5A championship game against Independence, the Admirals ended the season by hoisting the Class 5A state championship trophy on a December Friday night in Murfreesboro. Farragut went 14-1 in 2016 and won its last 12 games en route to capturing the gold ball. But there wasn’t much time to celebrate. 2017: “We enjoyed last year. We enjoyed December but we got Courtney back to work in February,” said longtime FHS varsity football head coach Eddie Courtney, who will begin his 22nd season as the Admirals skipper. “We got back into the weight room and we went back to work.” Moving up to Class 6A this beginning this season, Farragut opens the 2017 campaign Friday, Aug. 18, at Bradley Central. Strengths: With Courtney saying he’s happy with the Admirals’ overall skill position depth, key among that is a wide receiver corp being courted by Division I schools, including the Tennessee Volun-

teers. Three starting offensive lineman return. Inside linebackers Drew Butler and Cade Burkey, both seniors, were among the team’s leading tacklers last season. Concerns: The defensive front must develop, and depth on the offensive line needs to be established according to Courtney. Senior quarterback Max Travis, last season’s back-up who is especially strong as a runner, takes over for recordbreaking QB Adam Fulton. Accurately delivering the ball to those talented receivers is critical. Other Top Offensive Names: Braden Collins [senior, wide receiver being courted by a handful of Division I schools]; Jacob Warren [senior, tight end who has committed to Tennessee]; Andrew Maxey [senior, offensive tackle]; Keehan Terhark [junior, offensive guard]; Jonathan Buchanan [senior, center]; Cooper Mashburn [junior, offensive guard]; Jackson Powers [offensive tackle]; Kyle Carter [junior, running back]; Isaiah Gibbs (junior, running back); Jaden Gibbs [junior, wide

receiver] and Wyatt Lucas [junior, wide receiver]. Other Top Defensive Names: Farragut will have competition at several spots. Junior Ethan Gossage and senior Anthony Lawson will vie for the starting noseguard position. At defensive end, Nnambi McSwine (senior), Nolan Davis (senior) and Jake Rima (junior) all look to see playing time. At outside linebacker, potential starters include Alex Williams (senior); Caleb Kuhn and Neyland Harmon (junior). Devin Yarborough (senior) provides inside linebacker depth. Griffin Swicegood and Hunter Shopovich will compete for time at the free safety spots. Other safeties include Tanner Corum, Nathan Morgan and Collins. Isaiah Gibbs, Jon Buell, Tucker Jones. Grayson Utterback and Santiago Matsumu-

ra will look to see time at the cornerback positions. Warren’s View: Warren said the Ads are looking to duplicate last season’s success. “We were glad to be the class that finally got Coach Courtney his state championship,” said Warren said. “It was all for him. “And this year, we want the same results and I think we have a lot of success left in us,” he added. “We’ll have a target on our backs and things might be a little bit tougher in [Class] 6A, but we’re just going to come in and continue to work hard. This will drive us to be better.” Schedule: The shift in classification means the Admirals’ most celebrated traditional rivalry game, against Kingston Pike rival Bearden, will take on added significance as both teams compete in Region 1-6A this season. Hardin Valley Academy returns to the FHS schedule, at HVA to close the season, and also is a league foe. “It will be great playing Hardin Valley again and it’s great that the Bearden game means a little bit more this year,” Warren said. “We grew up with those guys. played with those guys and we’ve played against those guys.” The competition in Class 6A is perceived to be tough. But Farragut played a tough schedule last season, which is by design. “We played a tough schedule in 5A and we always play a tough schedule,” Courtney said. “We’ve played Bradley Central. We’ve

played Bearden and we’ve played Hardin Valley and we’ve played all of those teams.” Other Region 1-6A opponents will be Science Hill, Morristown West, Jefferson County and Kingsport Dobyns-Bennett. Farragut also has a road non-region tilt at McMinn County. The Admirals host longtime rival Oak Ridge Sept. 8 and West High Sept. 22 in non-league games. ~ Ken Lay

Actually, a past HWWW PureMagic champ returns to the contest for best regular season record: Webb School of Knoxville, perennial Division II state power, which is led by East Tennessee coaching legend Dave Meske. Brand new to the contest is the Concord Christian School Lions coached by Troy Fleming, a former UT Volunteers skill position standout. The Spartans and CCS will join Farragut, Hardin Valley Academy, Bearden,

Knoxville Catholic and Christian Academy of Knoxville for this year’s contest. The KCHS Fighting Irish, lead by head coach Steve Matthews, is defending HWWW PureMagic champion. The FHS Admirals were Class 5A champs last season without winning the 2016 regular season award [Lost pointsscored tiebreaker versus Catholic]. Ironically, Eddie Courtney’s Admirals were 2015 HWWW PureMagic champs while the Irish ended up winning the Class 4A state title that season. PureMagic Carwash, owned by avid high school football fan Jim Rooney, has been our HWWW sponsor for several years. “Jim Rooney’s enthusiasm for high

school football overall, and especially in the Farragut area, is quite evident,” Alan Sloan, farragutpress editor, said. “PureMagic’s sponsorship of this contest, thanks to Jim, is certainly appreciated by this newspaper. And coaches of the schools involved often express their appreciation.” In case two or more teams tie for best regular season record, our HWWW PureMagic champion will be determined with a different tiebreaker format. That champ would have earned the most net points after regular season play, determined by subtracting points it allowed from the points that team scored. Past seasons’ tiebreakers were determined by the team that simply scored

the most regular season points — points allowed was not a factor. In each week’s farragutpress involving coverage of the high school football regular season, our HWWW PureMagic scoreboard will be updated. The winner will be announced in our Thursday, Nov. 2, issue. That winner will receive the HWWW PureMagic trophy, a bronze-colored cowboy hat set on a wooden base, plus $500 checks from PureMagic and farragutpress. Trophy and checks would be presented at a school function of the winning school’s choosing — often that team’s annual banquet. ~Alan Sloan

Team Concerns: Lack of depth on both the offensive and defensive lines. Top Returners: Sam Coffin (senior, safety); Collin Ironside (sophomore, quarterback); JaQuavis Russell (senior, cornerback); Shinlever Addison Ironside (junior, tight end); Tyson Bivins (senior, cornerback); Colten Tyler (senior, tight end/defensive end); Dawson Houser (senior, wide receiver/

quarterback); Caleb Wilkins (junior, linebacker/kicker/punter); Mason Stivers (senior, offensive lineman); Michael Clubb (senior, offensive lineman); Fred Cooper (junior, offensive lineman); Nate Adkins (senior, offensive lineman/defensive lineman) and A.J. Simon (junior, defensive lineman). Expectations and Keys to Success: Morgan Shinlever begins his fourth season as the Bulldogs head coach and his tenure has been a roller coaster ride to say the least. In 2016, Bearden went 4-7. The Bulldogs were 6-5 in 2015 after going 1-9 during his first season when the ‘Dawgs won their season finale against William Blount. But the coach is eager to begin again in 2017. “When you play [Class] 6A football, you have to be ready to play every game,”

he said. “You always have to have you’re a-game because there are just no weeks off. “But this group has been a fun group to coach and my staff likes teaching these guys. The biggest thing for us is that we have to stay healthy. We have to be wary of our players’ health.” Shinlever did his part to ease the wear and tear on his squad during his second season as BHS coach. It was then that he was able to build a little quality depth as numbers and interest in the program in-

creased. Now, the Bulldogs have very few players playing both ways. “We’re pretty much two-platoon. We’re a big enough school so we’re able to do that,” Shinlever said. “We do have three or four guys this year who are going to go both ways [offense and defense].” Bearden began preparations for this season soon after being eliminated from the Class 6A Playoffs by Riverdale. And the Bulldogs may have their best team See BULLDOGS PREVIEW on Page 14

chemistry in several seasons. “I think this is possibly the most unified team that we’ve had since I’ve been here,” Shinlever said. “We have solid senior leadership and those seniors have done a good job teaching our younger kids what this is all about. “They do a good job teaching these younger kids what it means to play Bearden football. They teach them why we do the things that we do here.” A key to success for any football team is preseason preparation, and that all begins in the weight room where only coaches and teammates are watching. “Our expectation is to make a run and go deep into the playoffs,” Adkins said. “We want to do our best in every single game that we play. “We came in during the offseason and we worked hard in the weight room. It’s been a long winter, a long spring and a long summer. Now, it’s just going to be fun to start the season.”

Bivins agreed. “During the offseason, we concentrated on getting our players stronger,” he said. “We did that to make sure that we would be able to play against the [Class] 6A teams and all of the teams on our schedule. “This is going to be tough, but you just have to keep pushing yourself.” The Bulldogs will open their 2017 campaign on Saturday, Aug. 19 as they rekindle a one-time intense rivalry against West High along Sutherland Avenue.

P R E V I E W

2016 Record: 9-3 [lost to Elizabethton in the second round of the Class 3A playoffs] Returning Starters: 12 [5 on offense, 7 on defense] Team Strengths: Work ethic and team chemistry. The Warriors are a hard-working closeknit group according to second-year head coach Travis Mozingo. CAK also has leadership at Mozingo the skill positions. Team Concerns: Lack of depth at the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball Key Players: Alex Dalton [senior, running back/outside linebacker]; Grant

Richardson [senior, running back/inside linebacker]; Drew Claborn [junior, quarterback/wide receiver/defensive back]; Baker Benfield [a senior defensive back, who is an All-Region soccer standout for the Warriors]; Eli Chinique [senior, offensive lineman/defensive lineman]; Stewart Howell [junior, quarterback/ wide receiver/outside linebacker]; Luke Simpson [quarterback/wide receiver/defensive back] and Daniel Plese [senior, running back/defensive lineman]. Expectations and Keys to Success: For years, the Warriors have been one of the top teams in Division I high school football. Deep playoff runs are the norm for CAK, which won back-to-back Class 3A state championships in 2011 and 2012. The Warriors are no strangers to the state quarterfinals. Last year represent-

ed CAK’s earliest playoff exit in nearly a decade. Expectations are lofty for the Warriors again this year. But the school will begin a new chapter for its athletic program in 2017. CAK moves to Division II for the first time and the Warriors will compete in Division II-AA with a pair of familiar Knox area opponents. Like CAK, the Grace Christian Academy Rams will make the move to Division II after a strong run in Division I. The Rams and Warriors have become rivals and that game will obviously carry more significance in 2017.

That game will have another new wrinkle this season as former Warriors head coach Rusty Bradley takes over Grace’s football program after a year at University School of Jackson. “He’s a great coach and it will be strange seeing him on the other sideline,” said Grant Richardson, CAK senior running back and inside linebacker. “Grace has always been a great and healthy rivalry game for us. But once we get started it will be just another game that we’ll need See WARRIORS PREVIEW on Page 18

to win.” The Warriors will travel to face the Rams Friday, Oct. 6. CAK’s other traditional rival is Webb School of Knoxville. The two Cedar Bluff area private schools are almost neighbors — and now they are Division II-A foes. The Spartans represent one of the Volunteer State’s powerhouse programs. Webb will invade CAK Oct. 20. While the Warriors know the Rams and Spartans well, the same can’t be said about the other opponents on CAK’s schedule. “We’re playing a lot of new opponents,”

Mozingo said. “We’re playing a lot of other people except for Grace and Webb.” Division II-AA is comprised of the Warriors, the Spartans, the Rams, Notre Dame, Chattanooga Christian, Silverdale Baptist Academy and Boyd Buchanan. CAK has a tough non-region slate of games including the season opener against Christ School of Asheville [N.C.] Saturday, Aug. 19. The Warriors also have non-league games against Greenback, Lenoir City and Bearden. “We have a bunch of new opponents and we’re looking forward to playing them,” Dalton said. “We don’t know a lot about most of them but we’re excited and we’re ready to get the season started and we’re ready to get after it.”

The Warriors will log some heavy travel miles this year, but Richardson said that’s not new for CAK. “We’ve always traveled a long way,” he said. “We’re looking forward to making those trips. We have good leadership as we head into Asheville and I expect that we will do well. “Of course, we always look forward to Grace and to the Webb game.” CAK has plenty of depth at the skill positions. But one skill position remains a question as the 2017 season looms. The Warriors lost quarterback Cole Smith to graduation last spring. He was a four-year starter and was the latest in a long line of star quarterbacks [including Charlie High, Richard Harb and

Quinn Epperly]. Mozingo said that he still hasn’t settled on Smith’s full-time replacement. “I’m not sure I could name a starting quarterback for Week 1,” Mozingo said during the preseason. “We may go into the season with at least two quarterbacks. “We have three guys and they all bring good things to the table. They’ve all been receivers and they all know our offense.” Three juniors — Stewart Howell, Drew Claborn and Luke Simpson — were competing for the starting spot during summer workouts. Mozingo said the competition began during spring practice. ~ Ken Lay

CONCORD CHRISTIAN SCHOOL

LIONS 2 0 17

P R E V I E W

• (Program history): entering its third season as a TSSAA varsity football program, Concord Christian School is still looking for its first varsity win. • (Strengths): despite a roster of just 22, CCS returns almost all of its talent from last season — in addition to adding a few key freshman who will start. “They’re immensely better. They understand what the expectations are, how to win a game, Fleming how to prepare for a game,” said Lions head coach Troy Fleming, in his fourth season at CCS. Fleming has guided the program from its infancy in 2014 when the young Lions played a junior

varsity schedule. “… This is their third year of varsity, so they know what to expect from an opponent each and every week,” he added. “… The motto for our team this year is ‘Don’t Stop.’” (Concerns): “We need to stay healthy. We really need to increase our numbers. I could use five more kids to level out the depth,” Fleming said. (Schedule): Having moved up to Division II-A to play the likes of Middle Tennessee private schools such as EzellHarding and Donelson Christian Academy, “This schedule is tough. From top to bottom there’s more quality teams” versus the previous two varsity seasons, Fleming said. “But I think we have a realistic opportunity of getting our first on-field win as a school,” the former Tennessee Volunteers

running back added. (Offense): About the team’s spread offense, Fleming said, “Although I did play fullback and running back, I love to throw the ball, to spread it out. “We are light years ahead” of last season, the coach added. Though he did not play for the CCS high school team as an eighth-grader last season, freshman Gage Maynard has earned the starting quarterback job. “He is football savvy, loves the game and prepares extremely well,” Fleming said. “He does it in a professional manner. He takes it seriously, and therefore the team takes it seriously when he’s in the huddle managing the team. “And so, for us offensively as coaches, it gives us confidence to know that we’re able to put more on him, though he’s a freshman, because he executes very well,” Fleming added. “… He also has a photographic memory.” Sophomore Grant Sillyman and junior Rafe Keyes “will be the two main receivers we go to,” Fleming said. “Grant has really stepped it up over the summer.”

Freshmen running backs Lee Dover and Sam Kniss plus junior Todd Henningsen “and possibly Rafe” will lead the Lions ground game. “Right now Sam is our starter.” Fleming said senior Jon Roberts, an offensive right guard and outside linebacker, “is our best overall player. Jon is one of the guys who have been in our program from day one; never missed a workout.” Roberts joins senior right tackle Hunter Templin and senior center Bryson Butsko “as four-year starters,” Fleming said. Other OL starters are left guard Elijah Kniss, a junior who was named the team’s most valuable player last season, and left guard Elijiah Kirkpatrick. Kniss “is probably our most consistent player up front fundamentals-wise,” Fleming said. Excluding Templin, “who’s about 165 pounds,” Fleming said his other four offensive linemen “average about 205” pounds. (Defense): from the Lions’ three-lineman, four-linebacker base defense, “Our See LIONS PREVIEW on Page 21

HAWKS 2 0 17

P R E V I E W

2016 Record: 9-4 (lost in Class 6A state quarterfinals to Oakland) Team Strengths: Team speed and depth at the skill positions. The Hawks also return starters on both the offensive and defensive lines. Team Concerns: Coach Wes Jones said that the Hawks must continue to build quality depth on both the offensive and defensive lines. The Hawks lost 14 seniors following last season and are extremely young. HVA must stay healthy if it is Jones to duplicate or exceed the success that it enjoyed in 2016. The Hawks also must replace quarterback Gavin Greene, who started all 13 games last season. Jones said that junior Grayson Vaughn and sophomore Jacob Smith entered summer workouts as the top candidate to replace Greene. Newcomer and freshman Zak Acuff has also been impressive early. “We have to replace Gavin Greene and we have three guys in there who are competing to do that,” Jones said. “Grayson and Jacob have competed during the spring and Zak has battled his way in there.” Key Players: Nolan Brown (senior, wide receiver/defensive back); Aaron

playoff game until 2016. Hardin Valley played two home playoff games and won both before falling to Oakland in the Class 6A quarterfinals. The Patriots knocked off Maryville before losing in the state championship game in December. “It was a fabulous season for us to get over the hump and win a couple of playoff games,” said Jones, who has been the only head football coach in the school’s brief history. Last year was undeniably magical for the Hawks, but the players aren’t resting on their laurels. As the 2017 season looms, the Hawks want more. “We have some really great talent on our team this year,” Dykes said. “We’re a little younger but we want to do even better this year. “We expect to make the playoffs because this is a competitive sport and you always want to do better than you did last year. Last year, we competed and we competed really well.” The Hawks, who open their 2017 at Oak Ridge Friday, Aug.18, will play one of the state’s toughest schedules. But that’s nothing new for Hardin Valley. “When you play [Class] 6A football, it’s always tough and it’s always a grind,” Jones said. “We only have 14 seniors so we’re really young. “We’re [also] going to play a tough non-region schedule, so we’re going to

have to stay healthy.” The Wildcats went 8-3 last season and won the Region 3-5A championship. Hardin Valley then has non-league tilts against West High, Heritage and Central (which played in the Class 4A championship game last year). The Hawks then close the regular season with six consecutive Region 1-6A games against Morristown West, Jefferson County, Science Hill, Kingsport Dobyns-Bennett, Bearden and defending Class 5A champion Farragut. Dykes said he’s glad the Admirals are back on HVA’s schedule. It will be a locally televised Thursday night game. It’s the regular-season finale for both schools and Senior Night for the Hawks. “We played Farragut my freshman year and hopefully, it will be a great game again,” Dykes said. “There will be a lot of talent on the field that night.” Colby Green agreed. “We have to work hard each week and Bearden is always a tough game for us,” he said. “It’s great to have Farragut back on the schedule. It will be a huge game for both teams at the end of the year.” Hardin Valley may have one of the area’s younger team. But the Hawks have the one thing that can’t be coached. That’s speed. “A strength for us will be team speed,” Jones said. “I think this is the fastest team that we’ve ever had.” ~Ken Lay

FIGHTING IRISH 2 0 17 P R E V I E W 2016 Record: 10-2, eliminated in second round of Class 4A Playoffs Returners: 18 (9 on offense, 9 on defense) Team Strengths: Experience on both the offensive and defensive fronts. Team Concerns: Overall depth and inexperience at the quarterback position. Top Returners: Cooper Mays Matthews (sophomore, offensive lineman/defensive lineman); Cade Mays (senior, offensive tackle/defensive lineman; a University of Tennessee commitment); Cam Blakely (senior, wide receiver/defensive back); Jake Mahoney (senior, running back/linebacker); D.J. Mitchell (senior, running back/outside linebacker); Jake Sompayrac (senior, quarterback/defensive back); L.B. Liverman (senior, offensive lineman/defensive lineman) and Joe Fluker (senior, running back/linebacker). Key Newcomers: DaShon Bussell (senior, wide receiver/defensive back); Styles Moore (sophomore, defensive lineman) and Ray Thompson (junior, running back/defensive back). Expectations and keys to success: Expectations are lofty for the Irish and that’s nothing new. Catholic won the 2015 Class 4A state championship and entered the 2016 campaign as a favorite to repeat. But the Irish’s quest for a second consecutive state title ended abruptly with a second-round playoff loss to region rival Fulton. “Hat’s off to [Fulton] coach [Robbie] Black. He and his team did a great job,” KCHS coach Steve Matthews said. The Irish’s coach may have congratulated Black and the Falcons, but the early postseason exit left Catholic with a collective chip on its shoulder. “We want to win a state championship and I said it during my sophomore year 30 Seven + • 2017 Football Preview

and I said it last year and I say it now,” said Cade Mays. “At the end of last season, we weren’t playing as a team and that was definitely a disappointment. No one expected us to lose and we didn’t expect to lose. But we weren’t on the same page late last year. “Everybody was worried about moving on to what was ahead of them. They were worried about moving on and playing college football. Everybody definitely stopped thinking about playing high school football, and in the end, that really cost us.” Matthews said there was plenty of blame to go around and he was more than willing to pay for the playoff exit. “That was on me,” Matthews said. “It was on me because I didn’t do a good job keeping the team focused. “We came into the [playoff] game against Fulton having won 20 straight games. And we won 17 of those games by the mercy rule.” The Irish won 11 outright games last year. But they had to forfeit their season opener against Morristown West after it was discovered that the team used an ineligible player. That hiccup, however, didn’t change the ease with which Catholic handled its opponents during the regular season. But an empty feeling prevails on the KCHS campus because the Irish didn’t end their season hoisting a gold ball in Cookeville. “Every year, we expect to win a state championship and if we don’t win the state, it’s a disappointment,” said Cooper Mays, Cade’s younger brother. “Nothing less than a state championship is acceptable. “Every day that we didn’t get to play, I sat around and I thought about it and it didn’t sit well with me.” Catholic has big goals and for the team to reach the state title game, it must stay healthy. “Depth is always a concern for us because it’s always that way with a school our size,” Matthews said. “The biggest key to our success is that we have to stay

healthy. Catholic moves up to Class 5A this season and the Irish will compete in Region 4 against the likes of Rhea County (which is coached by former KCHS head man Mark Pemberton); Soddy-Daisy; Walker Valley and Lenoir City. KCHS opens its 2017 campaign at Maryville Friday, Aug. 18. The Irish then travel to Chattanooga Baylor Aug. 25. They

host Eagle’s Landing Christian Academy (Ga.) Sept. 1 before facing Cleveland and Soddy-Daisy on the road. Catholic then has three consecutive home tilts against Brentwood Academy, Rhea County and West Greene. The Irish then travel to Walker Valley before returning home to close the regular season against Lenoir City’s Panthers. ~Ken Lay

2016 Record: 11-2 [lost the Division 11-A state championship game versus Lausanne 12-9] Team Strengths: Exceptional team speed, experience at the skill positions, leadership and punting. Team Concerns: overall depth, especially on the defensive front and at the linebacker posiMeske tions. Top Players: Trevor Hall [senior punter who will look to move on to play Division I college football, according to head coach Dave Meske]; Morgan Ernst [a senior running back and linebacker, who has committed to Army]; Jake Julian [a senior

offensive lineman and defensive end who was an All-state performer in 2016]; Hunter Green [a senior and three-year starter at quarterback who threw for more than 1,000 yards last season]; Elijah Howard [a freshman running back and defensive back who burst on the scene as an eighth grader last year]; Jah-lil Jefferson [a junior wingback and defensive back who received All-state honors in 2016]; Bryson Glenn [senior, tight end/defensive back]; Davis DeLozier [senior, wide receiver/ defensive back]; Sam Warner [center/ defensive tackle]; Isaac Hubbard [senior, offensive guard/defensive tackle]; Jones Stamper [senior, offensive tackle/ defensive tackle]; Gavin Norwood [senior, offensive tackle]; Alec Boruff [junior, defensive back] and Roderick Lewis [junior, wide receiver/defensive back]. Expectations and Keys to Success:

Meske, beginning his 33rd year as Webb head coach, has high hopes for his team this year. “I think we’ll be in the mix for a state championship,” he said. “We’ve won eight state championships and we’ll compete for another one this year. “That’s what we expect and that’s what the players who have played in the program in the past expect.” Meske has coached some speedsters during his tenure at Webb’s head coach, but he said this is the fastest team since

he arrived at the school. “We have tremendous team speed,” Meske said. “This is the fastest team that we’ve had. “We also have experience at the skill positions. We have great leadership and our punter will be an asset.” On the other hand, “Depth is always an area of concern for us,” Meske said. The Spartans’ state title game loss last December isn’t sitting well with Julian. See SPARTANS PREVIEW on Page 34

Spartans Preview From page 31

“We want to go back to the state championship game and this time, we plan on winning it,” Julian said. “We’ve waited a long time for this. “My sophomore year, we went through a rebuild and we went 5-5. That was tough for us. Last year, we won 11 straight games [after a season-opening loss to Class 3A state champion Alcoa] and then, we lost

the state championship game 12-9. Losing that last one left a bad taste in our mouths.” Prior to the 2015 rebuild, which saw the Spartans make a first-round playoff exit, Webb won three consecutive Division II-A state titles. The Spartans have 13 seniors back, and many of those players are returning starters. Webb will compete in Division IIAA this season against the likes of Grace Christian Academy, Notre Dame, Boyd

Buchanan, Chattanooga Christian, Silverdale Academy and Christian Academy of Knoxville. Webb opens the season Friday, Aug. 25, at home against Asheville High School (N.C.), then will host Division II “big school” powerhouse Ensworth Sept. 1. A trip to Chattanooga against McCallie is Sept. 8. “We have some tough games early,” Julian said. “We play Asheville, Ensworth and McCallie and those teams are all good.”

Expectations are lofty for the Spartans in 2017, but that’s nothing new. Ernst said that he’s looking to put last year’s championship game loss in the rearview mirror for himself and his teammates. “I’m looking forward to getting started. I’m just like everybody else,” Ernst said. “We will bounce back, [though] I hate coming off a loss like that.” ~ Key Lay
