Can anyone unseat Catholic How the West Was Won presented by 3 Minute Magic Carwash contest for 2014 While 3 Minute Magic Car Wash expands its reach with a new location inside the town limits of Farragut later this year, Farragut High School football annually has a huge challenge of expanding its number of regular season wins in the company’s annual best regular season record contest. For a sixth consecutive season, How the West Was Won presented by 3 Minute Magic Car Wash contest includes Farragut — playing two defending state champs, one state runner-up and two other traditional powerhouses — defending contest champion Knoxville Catholic, Hardin Valley Academy, Bearden and Christian Academy of Knoxville. “Supporting these local high school football teams is more fun than you can imagine,” Jim

Rooney, 3-Minute Magic Car Wash owner/operator, said. “It’s what motivates us at 3 Minute Magic to do great things. We get a lot of parents that say, ‘thank you;’ we get a lot of kids that say, ‘thank you.’” Catholic (7-3 record), seeks to hold onto its bronze hat traveling trophy while playing HWWW rivals CAK and Hardin Valley along with defending Class 3A state champ Alcoa and defending Division II-A state champ Webb School of Knoxville. “That Catholic program is one of the better-coached programs that we’ve seen in a while,” Rooney said. “I believe our players and fans really enjoy playing the teams that are close by,” said KCHS head coach Steve Matthews, whose Irish defeated both HVA

and CAK in dramatic fashion last season, said. Building a rivalry with district foe Catholic after a dramatic game last fall, CAK head coach Rusty Bradley said, “They’ve had a lot of success and they’re definitely pushing us. It’s a quality game every time we play them. We expect nothing less this year.” Farragut plays Fulton, twotime defending Class 4A state champ, along with traditional powers Kingsport DobynsBennett and Oak Ridge as its non-district foes. That doesn’t even count the Admirals’ District 4-AAA powerhouses Maryville (road), which has won three of the last five Class 6A state titles, and West (home), 2013 Class 5A state runner-up. “We’ve always felt like we want

to play the best,” FHS head coach Eddie Courtney said about playing KD-B and Oak Ridge annually while adding Fulton for a second straight season. “For us, sometimes, the overall record in the regular season when you play people like that, can be affected,” he added. Of course, playing Maryville and West annually also is the challenge of 4-AAA teams HVA and Bearden. Hawks head coach Wes Jones said adding Farragut and Bearden as annual rivals is special. Prior to Hardin Valley’s firstever game versus Farragut at FHS last season, “Eddie Courtney and I met at midfield and said ‘this is going to be one of the new big West Knoxville rivalries,’” Jones said. Players from the two

schools “literally grow up playing each other. … That’s a great rivalry there.” “The Bearden game’s the same way,” Jones added. “The kids grow up and know each other. It’s good crowds. It’s real exciting for us to be in that aspect of competition.” Morgan Shinlever, new BHS head coach, emphasized a different approach. “We’ve got to keep our heads on straight,” he said. “I think there’s been several times in the Bearden-Farragut rivalry teams have lost their focus because they’ve gotten caught up in the passion and the environment involved with that rivalry. “So, for me as a head coach, my main focus is worrying about my team being prepared and executing for that game-day,” he added.

Farragut High School promotes a positive and cooperative community of students, parents, and educators dedicated to ongoing academic excellence, creative expression, and civic responsibility. The school’s mission is building integrity and excellence in academics, athletics, & the arts. Named for Admiral David Farragut, who was born in this area, Farragut High School began in 1904 as a six-room frame academic building on twelve acres of donated land at the junction of Concord Road and Kingston Pike. The first class was graduated in 1907 with one student awarded a diploma. By 1976 Farragut had completely outgrown its original campus and was moved to a new $10-million facility on 55 acres overlooking the Farragut community. In 2004 Farragut High School celebrated its 100th birthday. Today Farragut High School is one of the leading high schools in Tennessee; the flagship of a rapidly expanding suburban academic community. Farragut’s campusincludes an intermediate school as well as a middle school which equates to 5,000 students total. The mission of Hardin Valley Academy is to provide a rigorous learning environment housed within small learning communities which foster social responsibility and academic excellence for ALL students. Hardin Valley Academy consists of four distinct learning communities or academies. The BLPA Academy offers opportunities to learn about legal processes, institutions, and history providing the foundation for careers in business, law, public affairs, government, and criminal justice. The Health Sciences Academy prepares students with the knowledge, skills, character, and attitudes necessary for success in health related fields at every level. The Liberal Arts Academy includes Humanities, Language Arts, World Languages, Fine Arts, Performing Arts, Visual Arts, Pre-Teaching, and Career Readiness. The STEM Academy at Hardin Valley focuses on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics.

The Christian Academy of Knoxville seeks to build a vital partnership with Christian parents from a broad cross-section of the Body of Christ, to assist them in fulfilling their Biblical mandate to educate their children “...in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.” The school’s vision is to honor and serve God by providing a Christ-centered educational environment that is an extension of the Christian home, that is accessible to a broad cross-section of the Christian community, that meets the needs of students with varying scholastic aptitudes through a balanced emphasis on academic excellence and continual spiritual growth and service, and in doing so is widely recognized and respected. The school was founded in 1977 with 96 students in grades K-6. Last year over 1,000 students age 3 through 12th grade were enrolled.

Knoxville Catholic High School, in partnership with parents and supporting parishes, is dedicated to teaching the Gospel, igniting a love for learning, and nurturing individual growth in body, mind, and spirit, as students are prepared to be Disciples of Christ who influence a constantly changing world. The school’s vision is to be a cornerstone of Catholic school education, inspiring young people through the ministry of Christ. The history of a Catholic high school in Knoxville reaches back as far as the late 1800’s when a formal high school curriculum was introduced at St. Mary’s Parish School on Summit Hill. In 1947, Knoxville Catholic High School became an accredited member of the Southern Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools. The enrollment last year was approximately 670 students in grades 9 through 12.

News from High and Pickett Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

High and Pickett Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery expands By Anne Hart With the recent addition of Dr. David 0. Pickett, the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery practice of Dr. William R. High, founded in West Knoxville almost 35 years ago. has seen a dramatic transformation. And there has been another kind of growth as well. The first week in September the practice opened new offices in a much larger space on the top floor at 248 North Peters Rd., next door to its previous location. Patients are delighted with the new site, which offers a spacious and beautifully decorated reception area as cozy and comfortable as any home. and plenty of convient parking right at the door. Dr. High has always been known for the quality of his work and also for his attention to every detail of patient care and with the addition of Dr. Pickett, patients will find the same level of care. The practice specializes in wisdom teeth, dental implants, bone grafts, extractions, TMJ treatment, biopsies and facial reconstruction. Dr. Pickett will be introducing cosmetic surgery and BOTOX injections to the practice's menu of services. Dr. High and Dr. Pickett also maintain trauma services at UT Medical Center, East Tennessee Children's Hospital, and Ft. Sanders Parkwest Hospital and enjoy the challenges this entails. Both doctors proudly wear the UT Medical Center’s Guardian Angel pins, indicating that patients have donated to the Center in their honor. Dr. Pickett is a native of Utah who holds both undergraduate and graduate degrees in microbiology from Brigham Young University. He graduated from the University of Florida College of Dentistry in 2009 and received specialty training in Oral and Maxillofacial surgery at UT Medical Center, where one of his professors was Dr. High.
