earden Baseball 2011 gives special meaning to the term “in the mix.” As of early March only one position, senior Craig Norwood at first base, was set. Seven outfielders “have been pretty equal,” head coach Jack Tate said, adding that 12 pitchers could contribute. “I’m pretty excited about the depth of the pitching staff. And I think our defense will be pretty strong. We also have quite a bit of speed.” Tate, starting his second year as head coach (19-23 in 2010) and a BHS varsity assistant for several years, said this team “has the best team chemistry I’ve ever seen a team have here.” Senior Dakota Stallings and Junior Trey York are battling at shortstop. Stallings would play third base if York starts at shortstop, with junior Derek Lance, All-District 4-AAA right fielder last year, moving to second. If Stallings starts at shortstop, York will play second and Lance third base. Lance said he can “play pretty much anywhere in the infield, it’s all comfortable.” Stallings, coming off a shoulder injury, said he hopes to be the team’s closer eventually this season. “But it’s not going to be soon,” he added. Senior catchers Drew Pasillas and Cody Norwood “could start for most high school teams in town,” Tate said. Sophomore Jordan Wall adds depth. Pasillas said he had “some blocking issues” behind the plate last year, but is “cleaning that up” through working with his father, Andy Pasillas, also a former catcher. Among his 12 pitchers, Tate said he expects senior Craig Norwood and junior Zach Sale “to be two of our main starters.” Sale also is vying to start in

B

right field. Senior Chris Hamilton, also likely to start in centerfield, “pitched the no-hitter against Farragut a couple of years ago, he’s come back with some confidence.” Senior Rob Thress “will be one of our top starters.” Thress, also competing for a starting spot in left field, missed most of his freshman and junior seasons due to injury. “I’m not going to blow it by people, I just try to hit my spots,” Thress said. Tate said junior Neil Gore, coming off shoulder surgery, senior Adam Thomas, junior Ronnie Broyles and freshman Lane Thomas all have thrown well. Juniors Ty Hill, also competing in the outfield, and Kyle Wentz, the only lefthanded pitcher, “are going to contribute a lot this year.” Other pitchers include Lance and senior Marshall Wilkins.

he Young and the More Experienced could be Bearden Softball’s “soap opera” title for 2011. “This year we have a lot more experience, even though we’re still a young squad,” BHS head coach Leonard Sams said. “But we’re talented in all areas, which we haven’t been in the past. “This year, defensively, we’re much stronger,” with overall team speed “much better.” Also, unlike recent years (23-20 record in 2010), “just about every single girl on this team was playing competitive travel ball” leading into the high school season. Junior catcher Amanda Dunaway “had a great year, her hitting at the end of the year really came on (.408 average). … She’s very strong now.” She’s competing behind the plate with junior Emma Kugler. One will start at third base. Both saw extensive catching time last season. Kugler “looks really good in practice.” Sophomore Danielle Willis, a .584 freshman hitter in 2010 who moves from outfield to shortstop, “has great speed, a great arm.” Willis said the position change involved “a lot of errors, but coach Sams helped me and got me to where I am now.” Sophomore Jenny Parkman, starter at second base with limited varsity experience, “has worked really hard,” Sams said.

Sara Burklin, junior first baseman, “really has been working hard in the offseason on her hitting. She hits for power, and she’s gotten a lot quicker.” Burklin said older brother Davis, a former All-state first baseman at Farragut, “has helped coach me, my fielding and hitting, since I was real little.” Junior centerfielder Kiarra Freeman, a third-year starter with excellent speed, “has gotten stronger, faster, quicker, and she’s really matured,” Sams said. About her improved hitting, Freeman said, “This year I’m like, more calm and relaxed. More patient, more focused.” Becky Braswell, a sophomore lefty, likely will start in left field. “She’s learning the game real quick,” Sams said. Right fielder Issy Crowley, a junior, “has got great range. Her arm is very good.” Pitching staff ace Jessie Goodson, a sophomore lefty, was No. 2 starter as a freshman. “She can spot her pitches very well … has got four pitches that work for her. She’s not going to overpower anybody.” Goodson said her strength “is getting movement on the ball,” adding the responsibility of staff ace “is pretty tough, but I feel like I can handle the responsibility.” Freshman Ashlyn Bowers is No. 2 pitcher, Dunaway No. 3.

Soccer

ric Turner has put the Bearden SoccerDawgs’ 2011 season on the shoulders of his junior class. “It’s come down to them, whether they can dictate how our season goes,” said Turner, BHS head coach since the late 1990s with three boys soccer state titles and one national title. While Turner said he “loves our senior class, they’re great leaders, they’re great players,” the junior class has things to prove. “We think they’ve got potential, but they haven’t necessarily had a lot of varsity experience.” With nine seniors lost off the 2010 team, “There’s a lot of holes to fill. And we really don’t have the depth we’ve had in years past,” Turner said. But from goalkeeper to forwards, “We’re well balanced.” Finishing tied for third-place statewide in Class AAA last season, Bearden’s six returning starters are highlighted by senior defender Seth Williams, NSCAA All-South and All-state in 2010 and a two-time All-District 4-AAA and Region 2-AAA honoree. A four-year starter at right defender, Williams is a “great player, has a real knack for the game. He’s been the anchor of our defense for the last four years.” Williams said the SoccerDawgs “have the dedication to where maybe we can have a repeat” to match the glory of national/state title in 2002, plus other state crowns in 2001 and 2006. Senior center-midfielder Carter Wykoff is an All-district and All-region honoree with “great work ethic,” Turner said. “Gotten better every year. Great player.” Wykoff said, “I think we have good tal-

E

ent with the young kids.” Junior forward Conner McCarty, a returning starter, “Has great speed. One of those forwards who can get into space and get behind you and finish. Has created a lot of havoc for defenses.” Adam Wojnar, senior All-district center-defender and team captain, is a “really smart kid, great knowledge of the game.” Wojnar said he’s become “more refined, my touches have gotten better and I’m more accurate with ball placement. Maybe mental speed has gotten faster.” While senior forward Sean Yoder “isn’t the most gifted athletically” according to Turner, “He knows the game really well, and he finishes when he gets an opportunity. That’s what makes Sean very deadly.” Senior goalkeeper Jamie White is a four-year starter. “He makes great saves when he needs to. Helps keep our defense in line.” Other starters with experience include senior forward Landon Burke, who “works hard and gives us energy all the time; kinda encompasses what Bearden soccer’s all about.” Ryan Ramsey, senior midfielder, “is one of those kids that understands the game.” Andrew Fulcher, junior midfielder, “Made great strides last year. He’s going to be another anchor for us in the middle of the field. Tough, hard-nosed player.” Junior James Ferguson will start at left defender.

Devin Gray and senior pitcher Walker Howell, who went unbeaten in 2010, raise CAK hopes. “To me, your catcher’s probably the most important defensive position on your team,” Pharr said. Gray “played great last year, I feel like he’s going to have a chance to play after high school. He’s a hard-nosed kid, worked hard on the weights. He’s a great thrower back there. “I think he’s going to be a lot better

Aiming still higher, “We’re shooting for 20 wins, the team set that goal,” secondyear head coach Harry Backhurst said about 2011, adding his Lady Warriors went 3-0 during a preseason “playday.” “We should see a big improvement this year,” he added. “The girls have worked a lot in the off-season. Pitching is a strength. “We have a great pitching staff, I’ve got three that are pretty equal,” Backhurst said, led by senior All-District 4-AA honoree Sierra Plese, a Milligan College signee. Younger sister, freshman Shannon Plese, freshman Kaylee McClanahan and junior All-district honoree Alyssa Pollard round out the staff. “They’ve worked in the off-season with pitching instructors and playing at a high level of travel ball.”

Though the Admirals have less proven overall talent than any recent season, FHS head coach Matt Buckner said his team is “going to be solid on the mound” in trying to win a fourth consecutive Class AAA state title. “So far in scrimmages and intersquads we’ve thrown a lot of strikes and played good defense.” Behind Pfeifer on the mound are junior lefty Xander Taylor, also starting right fielder, and senior Derek Chandler. “Both are quality guys.” Chandler, who added a change-up to go with his fastball and curveball, said he’s “feeling pretty confident.” Sophomore Eric Freeman, currently the No. 4 starter, “Is going to have a really quality year,” Buckner said. Freshman Chase Chambers “has a chance to start some games,” while junior Nathan Thompson could be in the mix. Junior Jordan Newby and senior starting third baseman Chandler Vannoy are “going to be a pretty good bullpen guys.” For Delmonico, a University of Georgia signee, it’ll be a season of adjustments: a new defensive position (catcher), a new batting order position — leadoff — plus the decision of whether or not to sign with a Major League Baseball organization and forgo UGA. “That’s tough to block out,” Delmonico said about the upcoming decision. “I’ve been praying about it. That’s going to

E

come in June. Right now I’m focusing on winning another state championship.” Pfeifer, a Vanderbilt signee who has a similar “Major League” decision to make, said he must focus on FHS. “I don’t have to meet with any more people, so I just get to play baseball,” said Pfeifer, adding that he’s leaning toward going to Vandy. A.J. Simcox, junior shortstop who started at third base last season, “has a chance to have a big year … a very talented player,” Buckner said. Sophomore Nick Senzel appears to have the second base job. First base still is “a battle” featuring seniors Garrett Jordan and Evan Surrett, along with Chambers. Taylor might be moved to first. As for left fielder Scott Miller, a senior, “We’re looking for some big things out of him, he’s a scrappy player.” Sophomore centerfielder Cameron Strickland “has some big-time athletic ability.” Senior Daniel Huggins, junior Braden Urevick and sophomore Anthony El Chibani “also are in the mix.”

espite the “big loss” of All-state first baseman Stephanie Harris, Farragut High School Softball should have a similar look in 2011. With six FHS starters returning, including its pitching staff ace, “We’ll be similar to last year’s team; pretty deep in the batting order,” FHS head coach David Moore said. “I think we’ll still be solid defensively, and team speed’s probably better,” added Moore, whose 2010 Lady Ads went 27-13 and finished No. 2 in District 4-AAA league and tournament play. “A good chance to run the bases a little bit more this year.” Farragut’s left side of the infield has true star power: All-state slugger Megan Harris at third base (.607 average, nine home runs, 73 RBI last year) and four-year starter Andi Murry, All-district, at shortstop. Harris said, “I probably just need to improve on my defense, my range.” Reflecting back on her career, Murry said, “it’s gone by fast, I didn’t just expect it to fly by.” With added responsibility, “It’s different being a leader this year and having to help out the younger kids,” Murry added. “It’s a little bit more pressure, but we have a good group of girls this year.” Returning staff ace pitcher Kaci Murr (26-10 record last year) is known for extremely good control without being overpowering. Sophomore Tori Etheridge, a freshman starter at third last season, moves to catcher. Junior Brittany Gray moves from second base to the starting first base spot. Junior Baylee Williams, a transfer from Indiana, “is probably our starting second baseman. She’s solid,” Moore said.

Returning senior outfielders Madison Gray, an All-district centerfieler (.442, 23 stolen bases), and Chelsea Sutphin, left field, help provide “good, solid leadership.” Madison Gray said the team does a good job being loose yet intense: “We goof around and have fun, but we’re pretty serious when it comes to gametime.” Sutphin said team chemistry is quite good: “We all get along really well; we’re together all the time, we’re really like family.” In right field, Moore said he’s “got a battle between junior Claire Berman and freshman Avery Blankenburg. Berman also could be FHS’s designated player. Brittany Gray, “who pitched a little bit for us last year,” is No. 2 on the mound. Blankenburg also will pitch. Sophomore Elisa Carrasco, who is “really improving” according to Moore, might be used regularly to pinch-hit or pinchrun.

ipeout. Competing for a high school boys soccer national championship in 2010 before finishing 25-1 and tied for No. 3 in state, Farragut in 2011 “is basically last year’s JV team,” FHS head coach Wallie Culbreth said. Culbreth, in his 10th season at Farragut with four Class AAA state titles and one national crown, said 2011 “is my biggest challenge ever” as Admirals skipper because “I return no starters.” While midfield is the team’s strength, “I return really only two original varsity players,” he added. “I’m having to retrain these guys into my system. “My coaching theme is experimentation.” Farragut’s two experienced returnees are senior forward Paul Neuefeind and senior center-midfielder Logan Heidinger. “Logan is a superb leader, and excellent with the ball.” The pair are quite familiar with each other. Neuefeind said he and Heidinger have “scored a lot of goals together, we’ve gotten a lot of assists together” dating back to middle school. Heidinger said he and Neuefeind “probably have been best friends since seventh-grade. … We’ve built up chemistry.” Senior sweeper Nick Agentis must rebound from knee surgery, and will be out at least a couple

W

more weeks. “Nick is an impact player,” Culbreth said. Agentis said by filling the shoes of former All-state sweeper Nick Muth, “I’ve got a lot to live up to, and I can’t let my boys down. My strengths are communication and knowledge [of] where everybody needs to be.” Junior Scott Dresen “will definitely be a starter,” Culbreth said. While filling in at sweeper, Dresen will move into a midfield starting role when Agentis returns. Senior Carlos Garcia, “a new player who has a lot of experience playing club soccer,” will start at right-midfield. Junior Dillon Landguth, who “did a good job for me last season” in a back-up role, starts at left-midfield. In the back, junior Tyler Rhone is starting left defender. “Dustin Rainey [senior] will start for me, but I haven’t decided if he’s a forward or stopper. He’s playing as my best stopper, but he’s a super forward.” Junior Connor Martens “will be in there somewhere between defense and midfield.” Justin Lomax “is a surprising sophomore, I’ve started him in every scrimmage in the midfield.” Junior goalkeeper Brad Timmis, who saw a little varsity action last season, currently has a slight edge according to Culbreth. But Drew Landguth, also a junior, “is competing hard for it.”

ardin Valley Academy Baseball is loaded with experience and showed marked improvement from its first-ever season in 2009 (4-29) to 2010 (16-19). “Experience and understanding the system,” along with “excellent speed and defense” are team strengths, HVA head coach Kirk Renegar said. Senior catcher Tanner Russell “did a fantastic job last year behind the plate,” Renegar said. “Really came on at the end of the year offensively.” Russell, a 2010 transfer from South Carolina, said it was a pleasant surprise “to be able to work out all year” at HVA versus “starting up in January” in S.C. Senior Ty Zollmann, back-up catcher, “is a solid option for us.” Chase Kirk, junior returning first baseman, is questionable this season following a knee injury. Clay Fielden, junior, will fill in “with power” offensively, Renegar said. Senior second baseman Zach Ahmad “tore it up” offensively in 2010 with a .450 average. Junior three-year starting shortstop Jake Denton is solid defensively, with improved offense. Versatile senior Clay Williams moves from second to third base and provides “raw athleticism.” Williams, a third-year starter, said HVA “was overmatched and intimidated” in

2009, “but last year we started competing and winning some games.” Senior Graham Rowan is designated hitter who has hit “.350, .360,” Renegar said, adding he’s “an RBI guy.” Left field is wide open, with juniors Jordan Newport and Michael Overton and senior Ryan Hotz competing. Junior Ben Barnett returns in centerfield, and is “all around probably our best outfielder.” Junior All-District 3-AAA honoree Elliott Whitt, “a dynamic offensive player (hit .360, 28 steals),” likely will start again in right field. Though his pitching staff doesn’t feature a power arm, Renegar brings back his top three starters: senior All-district Nathan Richardson and seniors Joey Covell and lefty Ryan Russell. Ryan Russell said in 2009 “we had kids who hardly knew each other ... but we’re going to have a good run at it this year.” Sophomore pitcher Cole Brill has a fastball and “power breaking ball” to pitch “at the next level,” Renegar said. Newport comes out of the bullpen, and has thrown “right on” early. Senior Nick Simonelli also might relieve. Sophomore Tommy Weiler, a lefty, “shows no fear.” Freshman Drake Ellis might contribute with a good mix of pitches.

ix returning Hardin Valley Academy Softball starters, on a team with just two seniors and featuring freshman and sophomores in key positions, welcome new head coach Whitney Hickam. Hickman, an HVA assistant the previous two years, said her team (12-12 last year) “works hard,” adding, “I think we’ve got what it takes to break into those top teams” in District 3-AAA. Concerns are “pitching and defense.” Senior Emily Cox, now a three-year starter at second base, is a “vocal” leader and “does it pretty well,” Hickam said. Cox said “taking a step in my swing,” by “closing down” her stance, “has helped me get a better batting average.” Junior McCall Beckler, returning catcher, “is a strong left-handed hitter and a good catcher,” Hickam said. Beckler, a lefty, said she’s been catching since “I was 10 years old … I really wanted to catch ever since I was little.” Sophomore first baseman Audrey Jaeger, who played outfield last year, “is another strong left-handed hitter,” Hickam said. Freshman Liza El-Ajam, starting shortstop, “has a lot of potential, just very raw. … I’m pretty sure we can turn her into a great shortstop.” Third base is a battle including junior Crystal DeLaCruz, who “has a real good glove, good reaction and a good arm” with “potential to be one of our best hitters.” Sophomore Kaitlyn Fisher “is one of the hardest working kids

S

on the team.” Sophomore left fielder Kara Amin, who started in the outfield as a freshman, is looked upon “to be a leader out there.” Amin said, “I’m not the best batter, but I feel like I make up for it in the field.” Sophomore Jasmine Langston, centerfielder who might start the season as staff ace on the mound, also started as a freshman outfielder and served as No. 2 pitcher. “She brings a great attitude and effort to the team,” Hickam said. Right field is a battle including sophomore Megan Barnett, who “has a great attitude. She might be a pleasant surprise.” Staff pitching ace Laura Hensley returns, but the senior is battling a sprained ankle and is questionable for the start of 2011. “She brings pitching and hitting,” Hickam said, adding her top pitching qualities are “control and endurance” with a “curveball and screwball.” On the mound, Langston “mixes it up, works in and out, gets it across the plate. She got perseverance.”

xperience and age apparently blend well with last year’s returning talent for Hardin Valley Academy Boys Soccer. “This is the first time we’re going to have a lot of experience, first time we’re going to have a lot of seniors and juniors,” HVA head coach Mike McLean said. “We’ll have a bit more depth this year.” Last season’s top two scorers, who McLean labels as “some of the best forwards in the state,” return in the names of All-Region 2-AAA Nick Skoda and AllDistrict 3-AAA Dalton Guzman. “Skoda, his biggest thing is speed. He can finish as well,” the coach said. “Dalton, he can be a playmaker, and he’s a finisher. And he helps setting up the ball, too.” Skoda, a senior, said it’s important for him “not to be selfish with the ball. I think I got caught up doing that last year. I need to trust my teammates, which I can. Everybody’s good around me.” Defensively, HVA returns three starters: All-District honorees Garrett Hay and Trent Stethen plus Nick Yoder. “I think the back, this year, will be good because they play as a unit because they’ve been playing with each other for a couple of years now,” McLean said. Hay, a senior, said he needs “to improve

my communication skills, speak out more.” Also on defense, “Jonathan Perelman and Steven Gallaher are looking to get some minutes in the back,” McLean said. Midfield features returning starters Hayden Zelem, All-District, and Devon Cox plus Chris Gallaher, Tyler Baker “and a few other guys who will share minutes there.” “The midfield, I think, will be solid.” Goalkeeper “is a battle between two seniors,” Dwayne Tucker and Joey Hinshaw. Hinshaw said the Hawks “have the skill, we just need to put in the work ethic all the time.” Hinshaw added that he’s been part of “individualized goalkeeper training” with club team FC Alliance, helping him improve since last season. With last year’s Hawks losing a heartbreaker versus Bearden in Region 2-AAA semifinal action (Bulldogs ending tied for third in state), “The expectations are high,” McLean said. “But I don’t know if they know the work it takes to jump from region to substate. I’m not sure they know that yet, as far as character and work ethic.”

he old baseball saying lives on: “If you’re strong up the middle you’re a good ballclub.” With that logic, Knoxville Catholic Baseball should be plenty good, and then some, in 2011. Senior All-District 4-AAA shortstop Drew Ferguson (.397 average last year), senior centerfielder George Harrison (.331) and improving sophomore second baseman Aaron Aucker, a returning starter, join “top newcomer,” Ben Breazeale, a sophomore catcher, to form the Irish “middle four.” Head coach Andy Sullivan, beginning his

seventh season at KCHS (125-71), said his Irish are “one of the best teams around up the middle [catcher, short, second, center]. I’d be hard-pressed to find another team that’s going to be that solid.” Ferguson said this year’s team “is all about chemistry” and has “come together more than in years past. We get along, we’ve all been friends for four years.” Harrison, who Sullivan said “did an awesome job” in centerfield last year, labeled his strength “defense, I try to play a good
