Enjoy the Great Smoky Mountains National Park ■

TAMMY CHEEK tcheek@farragutpress.com

Farragut families and individuals do not have to travel far this summer to enjoy the outdoors. Great Smoky Mountains National Park, which is about 50 minutes away, offers 748 miles of hiking trails for people to explore in the park, Dana Soehn, GSMNP Public Affairs management assistant, said. “Many trails are perfect for family strolls along rivers, but there are also many strenuous hikes for those looking for a challenging experience in the backcountry,” Soehn said. She encouraged all hikers to visit the park’s website, nps.gov/grsm/, for hiking tips or stop by its backcountry office for more trip-planning advice. Visitors can trek along such trails as Beard Cane, Beech Gap, Gold Springs Gap, Eagle Creek, Fork Ridge, Forney Creek, Gunter Fork, Hannah Mountain, Jonas Creek, Little River, Long Hungry Ridge, Lost Cove, Meigs Creek, Noland Creek, Panther Creek, Pole Road Creek, Rabbit Creek, Roundtop, Trillium Gap, Upper Hazel Creek and Wet Bottom. “Hikers enjoy the Smoky Mountains during all months of the year,” Soehn said. “During winter, the absence of deciduous leaves opens new vistas along trails and reveals stone walls, chimneys, foundations and other reminders of past residents, she added. “Spring provides a weekly parade of wildflowers and flowering trees. “In summer, walkers can seek out cool

retreats among the spruce-fir forests and balds or follow splashy mountain streams to roaring falls and cascades,” Soehn said. “Autumn hikers have crisp, dry air to sharpen their senses and a varied palette of fall colors to enjoy. “One of the most daunting tasks facing hikers is choosing a trail,” she added. “Start by deciding on what you would like to see.” That could be waterfalls, old-growth forests or endless views, Soehn said. “Then decide how far you would like to hike. If you haven’t hiked much recently, be conservative,” she advised. “Five miles roundtrip is a good maximum distance for novices.” Soehn recommended hikers allow plenty of time to complete their hike before dark. “As a rule of thumb, hikers in the Smokies travel about 1.5 miles per hour,” she said. “Many people travel slower. Sunset times vary from just after 5 p.m. in December to almost 9 p.m. in June.” Soehn reminded hikers they are responsible for their own safety. “Travel in the Great Smoky Mountains backcountry areas has inherent risks,” she said, adding rescue is not a certainty. “Your safety depends on your good judgment, adequate preparation and constant attention,” Soehn said. “Backcountry hikers should be in good physical condition and be able to survive on their own. Proper equipment and the knowledge of how to use it are essential for a safe trip.” She said hikers should tell a responsible person their route and return time and have that person contact the park,

Hikers can take advantage of 748 miles of trails in Great Smoky Mountains National Park, from easy strolls to strenuous treks through the mountains. This hiker took a trail from Silers to Clingmans Dome.

865-4356-1230, if the hiker does not return in a reasonable time. The hiker should also carry a current park trail map, know how to read it and be prepared for quickly changing conditions, Soehn said. A trail map can be downloaded from the park’s website or purchased from Great Smoky Mountains Association, a non-profit organization supporting educational and scientific programs in the park. Hikers also can call 1-888-898-9102 for a map. Hikers should carry a small first aid kit and a flashlight or headlamp, even on a day hike, she said. “If you have trouble on the trail, darkness may fall before you can finish the hike,” she added. Soehn recommends hikers take ade-

quate water, a minimum 3 to 4 quarts per person per day. “All water obtained from the backcountry should be treated either by filtering or boiling,” she said. Hikers should check the current weather forecast and be prepared for quickly changing conditions, wear shoes or boots that provide good ankle support. To avoid hypothermia, she recommended hikers keep dry, avoid cotton clothing, dress in layers and carry a wind-resistant jacket and rain gear, even on sunny days. In the last three years, the park’s Trails Forever crew has done work on the Chimney Tops trail, she said. “That project was completed on Dec. See MOUNTAINS on Page 18

Celebrate with Tennessee Smokies Baseball ■

ALAN SLOAN asloan@farragutpress.com

If you wish to pinpoint a birthday, or even invent a special occasion for which to enjoy a family celebration this summer within a festive atmosphere, just call Tennessee Smokies Baseball. Craig Jenkins, Smokies senior director of corporate marketing, said Smokies Park in Kodak (Sevier County) offers an array of packages for families looking to celebrate anything this summer, amid the backdrop of highly competitive Class AA Minor League Baseball in the Southern League. “Everything we do is designed around families and fun,” Jenkins said. As for families customizing their Smokies Park experience this summer, “We have a myriad of activities including suite rental, porch rentals, birthday parties,” Jenkins said about these “inclusive packages that come with tickets, meal vouchers, pizzas and [for birthday parties] a birthday cake. … We can accommodate you anywhere from basically $10 to $40 per person depending on how much you want to spend. “We have numerous private areas for parties. We have porches on the suite level, we have suites, we have Calhoun’s on the Yard: you get a fully catered meal of Calhoun’s barbecue and all the fixings that come with that,” Jenkins added. “You sit in the ‘Calhoun’s At the Yard’ seats, which are out [behind] left field. A beautiful 400-person two-tiered deck with umbrellas and private tables and so forth, and picnic tables. “Along with that, [behind] right field,

we have the Pioneer Heating and Air Porch that accommodates 150 people on a private deck out there. … We just rope them off and say, ‘this is your section.’” In addition to a cake, birthday packages also include “all your meals …we can get the Kids Zone passes included [games, bounce house and slides]. … And we sing ‘Happy Birthday’ to the boy or girl, man or woman. It’s done between innings during the game” over the public address system where “the whole stadium” can join in singing. Your summer family experience in the park also can include throwing out the first pitch just prior to gametime. “We try to limit it to a special occasion or something along those lines,” Jenkins said. A regular part of Smokies pre-game activities, “If you’re celebrating your birthday at the ballpark come on down, let us know about it and we’ll put you on the field for the first pitch,” he said. A healthy crop of highly regarded minor leaguers annually parade their talents in Smokies Park and electrify the fan base, which in 2014 included budding superstar Kris Bryant — now a Chicago Cubs third baseman whose first Major League Baseball game drew intense national media attention. During each weekend home stand this season, “Fridays are always Fireworks Night” following each game, Jenkins said. “That’s gigantic with the kids and moms and dads alike. Who doesn’t like fireworks? “Then you come back on Saturday nights and that’s typically our Giveaway Nights,” he added. “We just recently did Fleece Blanket Night, which was gigantic.”

Vintage Baseball Express Saturdays at 10:30 am May 16 & 30, June 6, July 11, August 29 Join us for a special steam engine excursion to historic Ramsey House for a vintage baseball game. Watch the Knoxville Holstons in an 1864 style baseball event!

Sundays feature discount “fours.” In addition to four tickets, “You can get four hot dogs, four bags of chips, four Pepsi colas, and two Kids Zone wrist bands that gets you into the Kids Zone to do all the games and bounce houses and slides — all of that for $40,” Jenkins said. To reach Smokies Stadium, take Exit 407 on Interstate 40 in Sevier County, the so-called “Dollywood Exit,” and turn left onto Winfield Dunn Parkway (if traveling east from Knox County) or right onto the Parkway (if traveling west toward Knox County). Stadium is within a quarter mile on the right. “Sevier County [Sheriff’s] Officers work that light [at 407 and the Parkway] to make it easier to get into the stadium and off of the Interstate. … The busiest exit in the state of Tennessee,” Jenkins said. “We have ample, ample parking for some 7,000 cars, and you’re parking pretty dad-gum

Where families play and learn together! Children’s Museum of Oak Ridge

close to the stadium.” Five ticket windows await those “who don’t have tickets,” Jenkins said. “However, what we try to encourage people to do is buy tickets online [www.smokiesbaseball.com] and have them delivered to your smartphone. And basically you don’t even need a paper ticket, you just walk up, show your phone and it scans the ticket for you.” The most loyal Smokies fans, in terms of attending games at Smokies Park, “Are from West Knoxville No. 1, North Knoxville No. 2 and Sevier County No. 3 … they come two, maybe three times a season,” Jenkins said. “Ten percent of our fan base comes from tourism.” Overall, “The feedback we receive is in the 95 percentile positive,” Jenkins said. 11, 2014,” Soehn said. “All of the work on the 2-mile trail was done by hand with materials on site, except for locust log steps and retaining wall materials that were airlifted in by helicopter long line.” She said the next full-scale restoration was scheduled to begin Thursday, May 4, on Alum Cave Trail. The crew will focus on restoring several targeted locations along the five-mile trail to improve visitor safety and stabilize eroding trail sections. “We anticipate that Alum Cave Trail will be closed May 4 through Nov. 19 in 2015, excluding holidays,” Soehn said. Hikers can still reach Mount Le Conte, Le Conte Lodge and the Le Conte Shelter by using one of the other five trails to the summit, she said. “The Mount Le Conte Lodge and Mount Le Conte backcountry shelter will remain open and can be accessed from any of these routes,” Soehn added. Besides hiking, the park also offers auto tours, bicycling, family campgrounds, fishing, backpacking, picnicking, waterfall walks and wildlife watching.
