LABOR of LOVE Home Builders Association of Greater Knoxville

T

he Love Kitchen, a Knoxville charity that provides homecooked meals for people who might not otherwise eat, has received plenty of national publicity this year. The founders, Helen Ashe and Ellen Turner, appeared on Oprah last month, and the charity was highlighted on Secret Millionaire recently. Large donations to The Love Kitchen mean the charity can update the facility and equipment as necessary. Unfortunately, the founders aren’t able to say the same for their own homes, which are in need of serious repairs. In fact, “Helen hasn’t lived in her home for awhile because the heat and air weren’t working. She’s been living with Ellen,” Doyle Webb, president of Home Builders Association of Greater Knoxville, said. “They give all their

time and money to The Love Kitchen.” Staff from WBIR approached HBAGK about doing something to help Helen and Ellen have the homes they deserve. The joint effort is being called Labor of Love, and the plans aren’t just for cosmetic updates. HBAGK plans include: new roof, windows, heating and air conditioning, siding, cabinets, remodeling kitchens and baths, new paint, moving laundry rooms, sealing basements and much more. “These ladies give their heart and soul to our community. It would be really nice to help them out because they’ve been helping out our community for 25 years,” Webb said. Fundraising for Labor of Love kicked off at the 60th annual HBAGK Home ShowTM, held at the Knoxville

Stanley’s Greenhouses, Garden Center & Plant Farm

THREE GENERATIONS Stanley’s Greenhouses, Garden Center & Plant Farm

tanley’s Greenhouses, Garden Center & Plant Farm is well-known throughout Knoxville, but few people know the origin behind the name, or more specifically, why it’s called a plant farm. In the early 1800s, land was given to the family by the halfbrother of Tennessee Governor William Blount. That land was used to farm wheat and vegetables. Years later, as Charles Stanley, owner of Stanley’s Greenhouses, Garden Center & Plant Farm, was growing up, the family sold their goods on Market Square to support themselves financially. Later, Charles realized the business needed to expand in order to remain profitable, so he tried adding flowers. Although the business has grown significantly with the addition of several greenhouses, Stanley’s honors the family’s farming roots in the business name. Family is important to Stanley’s and it remains a family business today. Charles continues to be a presence in the business. His sons, Monte and Rocky, have been overseeing for 20 years or so, updating the technology of the greenhouse and adding to the varieties of plants that make Stanley’s unique. Monte’s two sons, Brett and Bill, work at the family business. Zach, Rocky’s son, can also be found at Stanley’s. With three generations so passionate about horticulture in one place, customers would have a hard time finding a better place

2. Energy Star Windows a. Lowers energy bills and saves you money over single-paned and even new double-paned, clear glass windows. b. 3. Air Sealing a. Improves comfort, especially during periods of hot or cold weather. b. Lowers energy use, which means lower energy bills. c. Produces a quieter home due to less noise entering from the outside. d. Results in fewer holes where pollen, dust, pollution, and insects can enter. e. Improves durability of building structure through the reduced movement of moist air.

4. Sealing Ductwork a. Prevents conditioned air from leaking and increases the system’s efficiency by as much as 20%, thus keeping the home at a comfortable temperature.

5. Energy Star Light Fixtures a. Uses 1/4 the energy of traditional lighting.

b. Saves money on energy bills and bulb replacements, with bulbs that must last at least 10,000 hours (about seven years of regular use). c. Distributes light more efficiently and evenly than standard fixtures.

6. Energy Star Appliances a. Incorporates advanced technologies that use 10-50% less energy and water than standard models.

7. Thermal Air Barrier Alignment a. Restricts or slows the flow of heat using insulation materials. Across the entire building envelope, all holes and cracks fully sealed and in full contact with the insulation.

Markli Homebuilders

“MARKLI”HOME Means uncompromised quality nyone can build an expensive home. Few can build a truly fine home, and perhaps the greater part can build it only if money is no object. But Bob Markli is among that rare breed of “old school”, professional, artisan/craftsmen whose lifetime of dedicated experience qualify him to build fine homes at reasonable cost. Those fortunate enough to employ him will have no “broker” or “drive-by builder”, Bob Markli will be on the site mothering and shepherding each of his projects to a successful completion. To understand, it is necessary to know a little about Bob. Born and raised in East Tennessee of articulate, educated parents who came here from Maryland during WWII. His father, a scientist on the Manhattan Project, was a “renaissance man” who was also an accomplished engineer, machinist, pipefitter, mason, electrician, welder, carpenter, boat-builder and artist who suffused his son with a vast knowledge of mechanics, physics and aesthetics. His mother, a registered nurse from

famed Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore was a delicate and sensitive woman who infused in her children an appreciation of art, literature and the humanities. Growing up here in a time when steam locomotives still plied the tracks and telegraphs relayed messages, when kerosene lamps, coal stoves and plowing with mule teams were commonplace, Bob grew to love the history and sense of place that is the South. Choosing his career was not difficult for Bob whose professional career stretches back to the 1960’s where he first practiced the craft as a carpenter in the burgeoning Baltimore/ Washington corridor. Ever the student, he continued to develop his talents while studying his chosen field, progressing rapidly from journeyman to subcontractor to general contractor. He has built everything from apartment and town home complexes to entire single-family communities and WalMart See MARKLI on Page 27

Expo Center Friday, March 4 through Sunday, March 6. “We had almost one hundred people sign up to help from the Home ShowTM alone,” Webb said. In order to complete everything needed for the homes, including making both handicap accessible, Webb estimates they need to raise $50,000. To-date, he said they have raised approximately $20,000, well short of their goal. The Labor of Love project needs additional support from the community if they are going to manage to start work in April. Webb said 100 percent of the money donated for Labor of Love will go to Ellen and Helen, even if more money is raised than initially needed. “If there’s anything leftover, we’re going to put it in an account for maintenance for the homes. So if something goes bad or they need to change something, they’ll have money to do it,” he added. He wants to thank everyone who has offered to volunteer their time, materials and money. “Even though times have been hard, so many people have stepped up and given to this project. It’s been great to see.” Anyone interested in making financial donations should visit www.thelovekitchen.org and click on donations. udy Teasley has been named the No. 1 agent for Keller Williams Knoxville-West for 2009 and 2010, and the No. 1 Keller Williams Agent in Tennessee for 2010. She also was named in the top 25 agents of over 79,000 agents in Keller Williams for January 2011. Teasley also was in the top five for the Southeast Region of Keller Williams for 2010, which is the No. 1 rated region of Keller Williams Realty and is comprised of approximately 7,500 agents throughout Tennessee, Georgia, and Alabama. This follows all of the top sales agent awards that she has earned every year since 1999. Teasley joined Keller Williams Realty Knoxville-West in July 2008 and is their No. 1 agent. Keller Williams now has over 80,000 agents and is growing strongly. “I got into real estate about 22 years ago,” Teasley said. “I enjoyed dealing with homes and people and helping people find the right place for them.” What is the secret of Teasley’s success and winning awards consistently? “I’ve been in the business a long time and have a lot of referrals,” she said. “It’s also the builders I deal with. I help with development — developing floor plans, developing subdivisions — and that’s really what it is. It’s the contacts I’ve made over the years and the help of the people in the office.” Teasley works with only one part-time assistant, her husband, Norman Teasley Jr. A native of New York, Teasley moved to Knoxville more than 31years ago.
