With “Out of This World” talent, enthusiasm and success, Westside high school girls soccer stands tallest among Knox and surrounding counties. Therefore, a healthy dose of detail is warranted. Such detail on farragutpress’ Out of This World six — Farragut, Bearden, Hardin Valley Academy, Christian Academy of Knoxville, Webb School of Knoxville and Knoxville Catholic — takes center-stage this week in our 2010 Westside Girls Soccer Preview.

While one program has enjoyed an “unworldly” run of success — a defending state champion having won three state titles the past four years — another perennial powerhouse looks for its third state crown in five seasons. All six teams are blessed with numerous returning starters — one has its entire team returning. The six schools represent three Tennessee Secondary Athletic Association classifications: AAA, A/AA and Division II-A.

With more speed, a special group of talented freshmen and the return of all but three players from 2009, Farragut Lady Admirals Girls Soccer head coach Dennis Lindsay said he's “looking forward to the season.” “Win, lose or draw, I like their demeanor, how they're going about business,” the veteran soccer coach added. “Working hard, no problems.” Farragut will attempt to rebound from a disappointing finish in 2009 that left FHS short of the state tournament. “I've got a good group of seniors, they're coming along,” Lindsay said. Despite losing “three quality players” off of last year's team, “We'll make up the slack,” Lindsay said, adding the 2010 team could be better. “Some of that is how fast the freshmen grow up,” he added. “We've got a lot more speed than we had last year.” See ADMIRALS on Page 9B

Strong in its starting lineup minus an unproven goalkeeper, Bearden looks to use high-powered scoring potential plus proven talent in the midfield and on defense to cover up a few concerns. Two seasons removed from its back-to-back Class AAA state championships (2006, 2007), the Lady SoccerDawgs perhaps are hungrier than ever to win three crowns in five years. Scoring power should be a BHS strength. Senior Samantha Turner is the centerpiece of Bearden's offense as a threetime All-state forward. See SOCCERDAWGS on Page 8B

Christian Academy of Knoxville Girls Soccer is beginning to make up ground on their male CAK counterparts in terms of piling up Class A/AA state titles. The Lady Warriors finished off an unbeaten 2009 season, 24-0-1, with its third state crown in four seasons. Plenty of weapons return in 2010 looking for state crown No. 4 — though a key injury looms large. A championship mindset also returns. “One of our strengths, I have a group of players who last year, they were never beaten,” said Ried Estus, who despite losing three All-state honorees to graduation returns seven starters, including two All-state. “They don't know what it's like to lose,” Estus said. “We have a group of players who are expecting to win a state championship. You've got something special with that mindset.” “We have the talent pool to make a run at it.” However, “We have to get a lot better to have that opportunity,” Estus added. “One, you have to be very good. Two, you have to be very lucky in that you have to be healthy at the right time. “And three, you have to be playing well at the right time, you want to be peaking at the right time.” Returning goalkeeper Sally Jernigan, a senior, “Had an accident and did significant damage to a bicep muscle; we don't know when she'll be back from that,” Estus said. “We don't know if or when.” Looking to fill the goalkeeping void are freshman Alexis Viox and junior Catherine Bowen, the latter “a basketball player who is See WARRIORS on Page 10B

Though returning several key starters from its 2009 team, Hardin Valley Academy Girls Soccer team will field only one senior starter this season. Two Lady Hawks will lead HVA's highflying efforts. Junior standout Allie Kington, a team captain, returns at center-midfield. “Her speed is dangerous,” Hardin Valley head coach Mike McLean said. “She's just overall a total player. She's good at getting into the attack from the midfield. She's being recruited by some Big East, SEC and ACC schools.” McLean labels senior four-year returning starter Gretchen Johnson — including her freshman year at Karns — “a solid defender. Very, very smart, very vocal.” Johnson, also a captain, and Kington “are two the better players with experience,” McLean said. “We do have some other pretty good players.” Two sets of sisters help comprise a major chunk of See HAWKS on Page 7B

Nine returning starters and “good chemistry” has Webb School Girls Soccer upbeat for 2010. Head coach Jennifer Longnecker said her Lady Spartans “don't have that superstar diva,” but do have “a lot of talent, and it's spread out.” “And they all get along, they all like each other,” Longnecker added. The goal in 2010, Longnecker said, is to reach the TSSAA Division II-A state tournament after falling in substate action last year. Looking for a team catalyst, Longnecker points to sophomore goalkeeper Liz Newsom. “She's a leader, she's vocal, she's an excellent goalkeeper,” the coach said. “The girls all like her, all respect her.” Junior Anna Davis and sophomore Emily Edkin look to provide scoring punch as starting forwards. Fall Session: August 23-October 14, 2010 Cost: $80.00 per child for each 8-week session While Mark Leader pointed out his Knoxville Catholic Girls Soccer team has its “entire team back” from 2009, the head coach's focus was not only on five key returnees but six special freshmen. As a result, “Fortunately this year, what's in our favor is we have a very strong bench, which is the first time I've ever had that,” said coach Leader, who led his 2008 KCHS boys to the Class A/AA state title. Senior midfielder Brittney Gibson, junior forward Reece McKenzie and sophomore midfielder Kathryn Culhane “are a step above everybody else,” Leader said of the trio. “They're fast.” Senior Brianne Zimmerman returns as goalkeeper. “She played some last year, she plays as a club goalkeeper, so she should be pretty solid,” Leader said. “Last year, in the big games they seemed to put her in the goal.” See IRISH on Page 12B

strength “is cohesiveness, they all get along and they're all on the same page, which really impressed me. “They work well together,” he added. “I can see, by the end of the year, us forming real good team chemistry.” Lack of depth and lack of experience are big concerns, according to McLean. “This team is very young, we only have one senior starter [Johnson],” the coach said. “Our goal, a first step, is to win a district championship,” McLean added. “And then, I think the following year, we could have higher goals.” Other Lady Hawks looking to contribute are Katie Filipowicz, Taylor Smith, Shelby Buchanan, Heather Brown, Shelby Christian, Abby Dittig, Maddie Beal, Madi Paige, Emma McNeil, Maddie Holt, Kaitlyn Hay, Elizabeth Chastain, McKenzie Reagan, Lauren Meek, Abigail Such, Taylor Parker, Kaela Zelem, Lauren Grillo, Jordan Reed, Cassie Smith and Tara Walker.

Turner is joined by senior Caroline Gianeselli, a two-time All-Region forward, with junior Kristi Granger adding still more experience and talent. “That's going to be our strength this year, no doubt, Bearden head coach Eric Turner said. “With Caroline, Sam and Kristi returning, they've all had varsity experience. ... I think we're going to be able to score. Adding depth are sophomore Gabrielle Gianeselli “and possibly Cassidy Smith, depending on how she develops, coach Turner said. “Gabrielle played varsity last year. Junior Rebecca Stover, two-time All-Region mid-

fielder, returns on the outside. “She's a big track star, the coach said of Stover's athletic talent as one of the area's top middle distance runners in track. Still more experience is provided by junior outside midfielder Olivia Gianeselli, having started since her freshman season. Plugging up center-midfield is senior Allison Daniels. “We like our midfield, said coach Turner, though pointing out junior midfield starter Jessica Logan is out for 2010 with a torn ACL. “That kinda leaves us a little thin in the middle of the field. One other midfield spot is up for grabs. Three-time All-Region outside defender Kimble Glover, a senior, joins returning senior starter Meagan Yoakley, who moves from outside to inside defender this season. The other outside defender spot was up for grabs at press deadline, with juniors Ana Aponte and Monica Kubick in the mix. Coach Turner said his defense “will be a work-in-progress; I know it'll do well once we get into the season. But we're going to have a learning curve. Bearden is breaking in a new goalkeeper, sophomore Katie Emig “with no varsity experience, the coach said. “We'll just see how she does once she gets in the big games. “It's going to come down to whether Katie can adapt and become a big-time player, he added. “That's what we're looking for. Overall, “Our starting lineup I'm happy with, I think we're going to be fine, coach Turner said. But the coach added that depth is a huge concern, given “we lost a bunch of great players last year right down the mid-

dle of the field. ... Our biggest concern is all of our subs don't really have varsity experience. Other Lady SoccerDawgs looking to contribute are Ellen Dickinson, Courtney Norman, Joanna Logan, Annika Goff, Tru Powell, Kelly Riemer, Kayleigh Olson, Nikki Kur, Mackenzie Wall, Rebecca Buchanan, Rachel Crowley, Paige Mayfield, Mallory Denning, Andi Kur, Brooke Williams, Katie Griffith, Brooke Richardson, Kendall Norwood and Katie Cottrell.

Sophomore forward Laura Morse “will probably start a lot of matches for us,” the coach said. “She's a big, strong kid with a big shot. Chelsea Cates, a senior, returns as starting left midfielder. “She's just a worker, she runs the sideline all night long,” Estus said. A freshman, Melissa Garvey, will start at left fullback. “As a freshman, she's going to make an impact,” Estus said. “Exceptional speed, a hard competitor, she's going to be a very good player for four years.” Other Lady Warriors looking to contribute are Ann Lee Chesney, Sara Seaman, Rachel Newman, Morgan Taylor, Abigail Schoutko, Rachel Setzer, Sara Zimmer, Hannah Schoutko, Holly Chastain, Kristin Holst, Elizabeth Key, Emily Holcomb, Cassidy Belk, Cori Crocker and Maddie Brazwell.

ior, Taylor Donnell, joins junior Maggie Mamantov as center-midfielders. “They're so good at switching the ball and just being there for each other,” said Longnecker, in her third season as Webb head coach. “They'd drop a lung on the field before they'd let you down.” Olivia Cecil, a junior, joins youngsters Katie Thompson, a sophomore, and Hannah Seay, a freshman, as three key outside-midfielders. Defensively, junior Caitlin Brandow and sophomore Erin Scott join outside defenders Elizabeth Cope, a junior, and sophomore Janelle Calhoun. Longnecker said her team needed to improve its level of fitness, although Webb battled defending Class A/AA state champ Christian Academy of Knoxville to a scoreless tie in serious heat during the KIL Jamboree Saturday afternoon, Aug. 7. Other Lady Spartans looking to contribute are Kate Caldwell, Lauren Price, Leigh

Cooper, Jackie Martyn, Claire Denning, Katie Overton, Veronica Eres and Jane Romano.

“Up front, it's Anna Davis,” Longnecker said about an offensive version of Newsom. “She has great speed, her ballhandling is excellent. She's just always working, and in the big games it seems like she's the one pushing everybody and she's the one that puts us over the top in games.” The lone Webb senTaylor Donnell, 10

Leader labels senior midfielder/defender Amanda Cutting as “very dedicated, she'll be a good, solid player.” Though choosing not to mention other Lady Irish in the mix for other starting positions, Leader did point to “six good freshmen with the team,” many of who could contribute: Megan Dwyer, Katie Covino, Kate Longaker, Molly Dwyer, Brenna Zimmerman and Abby Leake. Other Catholic players looking to contribute are senior Erin Mishu, juniors Shaun Breslin, Alyssa Penpek, Megan Fisher, Claire Stauber and Liz Morris, and sophomores Martha Dinwiddie and Erika Miller. Leader said “some big competition” within District 4-AAA means Lady Irish expectations shouldn't automatically be high despite the team's experience. However, the coach said Catholic's “experience as a team, playing together as a team is a big help.”

With sophomore defender Heather Murphy also returning, “That's one extra defender; maybe more Josie up to midfield, maybe Beltran,” Lindsay said. Senior Rebecca Perkins returns in goal for the Lady Admirals. Lindsay said the Lady Ads' biggest concern is “getting the team chemistry in quick order.” Other Lady Admirals looking to contribute are Stephanie Miller, Katy Hill, Maddie Strnad, Brandi Bivens, Lilly Moore, Chelsea Jordan, Jordan Butler, Blair Rhodes, Jacqueline Ruggiero, Karley Olen, Joanda Parchman, Emily Davis, Jordan Woodford, Sarah Wickman, Zoe Berry, Haley Vandermeersch, Hailey Baker and Elyssa Maluso.
