In today’s Gospel, Jesus and His disciples were leaving Jericho which was a city located along the road to Jerusalem. Jesus was on His final journey to Jerusalem and His Passion and death.

This is important to know since the blind man called Jesus using the title of ’Son of David’. This proclamation was a preparation for things that would occur shortly in Jerusalem when Jesus was proclaimed Son of David on Palm Sunday.

Today’s Gospel reminds us that God is very present to our needs no matter what the circumstances. St. Mark’s account of the blind Bartimaeus follows last week’s Gospel of the ‘blind’ ambitions of James and John. Mark views discipleship as the ability to hope for glory in and through suffering. The true disciple is one who can see the exaltation of Jesus in and through His passion and death. All those persons of hope must persevere in their calling out for help and assistance like the blind Bartimaeus in spite of all their obstacles. And like Bartimaeus, the followers of Jesus need to follow Jesus along His way to the cross which is the condition of His glory.

It is important to remember that Bartimaeus, in faith, asks for needs while James and John who were ‘blind’ with ambition asked for wants. Jesus refused to give the disciples their wants but was very quick in giving Bartimaeus his need.

Bartimaeus was healed and given sight and with that he followed Jesus on the way. The Gospel story itself is filled with irony. A beggar became a disciple, a pilgrim, a living, seeing and walking proof that Jesus was and is the Messiah, the Son of David.

Even though most of us can see quite well, our vision can become blurred. As followers of Jesus, we do not always see clearly. Some examples of ‘Blurred Vision’ in our world today would be violence, bigotry, racism, social status preference, appearance and credentials. We often think the bigger or more expensive the better. We also think strength or force makes things right. Poor Vision!

It’s so easy to blame others for what could be considered our own blindness. We could say it is ‘society’s fault’. Excuses like: I’m the product of our times, or everyone is doing it, or we have always done it this way just will not work.

In this Sunday’s scripture Jesus helps the man to gain interior sight – INSIGHT – and thus empowers him to accept Jesus and His way of life. Bartimaeus gains his sight and followed Jesus along the way.

We can spend a great deal of our time and energy reflecting on blindness as a way of not seeing9but not seeing what?

Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Bartimaeus saw Jesus in faith before he saw Him with his eyes. To follow Jesus on the way means to be a disciple. How do we see Jesus? Is there a ‘way’ you are being asked to walk with Jesus? How much of your life is lived seeing through the eyes of faith?

Our Catholic faith experience is much like the experience of a person using eye glasses for the first time. Reading material, traffic signs and even buildings and people come into clearer view and sharper focus. Our faith causes us to look at things in a different perspective. Our faith tells us that our God is always involved in our problems and is waiting to reach out to us in our need.

Hope sees beyond the problem and discovers a God who cares and is ready to solve our needs if we learn to see with a new light of grace.

BAPTISMS We welcome into our family all newly baptized Christians and offer congratulations to the parents of: One of my great joys each year is our children’s Halloween Party - sponsored by our Holy Name and Ladies Guild. I love looking at the costumes - and wonder - what will be the favorite this year? Big Bird? But it always brings back memories of growing up and going “Trick or Treat - Money or Eats?’ I usually dressed up like a farmer - we always made our own costumes - but we did buy masks. I like the Howdy Doody one myself. I couldn’t wait to get home from the cold, snow, rain, wet or dry leaves, to eat part of my loot. I like the chocolate peanut butter cups and candy bars the best. The neighbors were so generous. We knew we were safe and cared for. I never touched the licorice. This was always preparation for All Saints and All Souls. Because it was a Holy Day we got off from school - but we would never think of missing Mass. We went every day. Since I was an altar server I often volunteered for 2 or 3 Masses.

Then All Souls Day was my most and least favorite. I served between 12 and 15 Masses (but I only went to Communion once - the first Mass). In our Parish we had daily Mass at 6, 630, 7, 730, 8, 830, and 9 every day. On All Souls Day Masses were 6, 620, 640, 7, 720, 740, 8, 820, 840, 9, 920, 940, 10, 1020, 1040, 11, 1120, 1140. Each priest said 3 Masses at the Main Altar and some at the Side Altar so each priest could say 3 Masses. There were at least 7 priests saying daily Mass, so there were 21 Masses on All Souls Day. This reminded me how important it is to pray for the dead.

In November we remember them all month long. On All Souls Day the crowds were huge - even though it is not a holy day of obligation. People came because they wanted to and felt it is very important to remember and pray for our loved ones. The Priest would read the names of all those who died in the past year.

It is so important to teach this to our children. During the month of November we make it a special privilege to pray for the Dead. The Church is the Church Triumphant in Heaven, the Church Suffering in Purgatory and the Church Militant - fighting against evil here on Earth.

Elma, New York The check made out to St. Gabriel’s for our paper recycling efforts in the month of September was for $167.65.

We receive a monthly check from Abibow Recycling (a full circle recycling organization). The landfill space saved in cubic yards was 26.18. God job, parishioners!

Speaking of recycling...Here are the guidelines for recycling paper in the green and yellow bins located in the back of the parking lot next to our parish hall : Yes: newspapers, magazines, old junk mail, office paper, fax paper, notebooks and folders.

No: plastics, cardboard, cereal boxes, chipboard, milk cartons, soda cartons, food cartons, bathroom or kitchen paper products, metals, or food.

We appreciate your adherence to these guidelines. Since Abibow recycling cannot recycle these “no” items to make newsprint, they prefer not to deal with them.

An interesting aside...they will take anything, because their experience tells them they must. Why is this? Because if they make it too “tough” on people, they won’t get the paper.

Though the recycling guidelines are right there on each bin to see and read, some folks will continue to dump their garbage (literally) into the paper recycling bins. Since our staff at St. Gabe’s recycles lots of paper, believe me, I know. I see what is in those bins, and it is sometimes is a downright embarrassing shame. I am quite sure it is none of you who are reading this parish bulletin that blatantly ignore the requested Abibow guidelines, but doesn’t it give you pause? I mean, are we not the role models for the children we parent, raise, and teach? Take a gander once in a while to see how many cigarette butts are strewn around our church grounds...even around the cigarette disposal stand just outside the entrance of the parish hall; or just outside the church! It is not uncommon to hear adults get frustrated with young folks, criticizing their behaviors and lack of courtesy. Hey, we probably tell our children not to be litterbugs, right? But...

Just how are we role-modeling what we espouse?

I have some good friends who work at Our Lady of Victory Homes of Charity. A few work at Baker Hall. Yes, their jobs are challenging, but they love their work...they love the kids.

I remember Joe Cozzo going on one day about how unfair it is for many of the young people he works with. Society looks down on these kids, he would say. His frustration was this...here were these young folks in his charge, who were often neglected; often abused. Many of them had poor adult role modeling. In effect, many of their behaviors (yes, selfdefeating, hurtful, and irresponsible though they were) were behaviors learned directly from adults in their lives. So basically, these kids got the short end of the stick when they were young, and now they are getting looked down upon for being the kind of young person that winds up at Baker Hall.

Joe was passionate about this. “We owe our young folks better than this!”, he would say. Let’s really try to role-model what we want our children to act like. They might listen to us, but they certainly do observe us. If they are going to make mistakes, let those mistakes be their own; not mistakes resulting from following the poor example that we set as adults. They can do better & so can we.

Congrats to Julianne Farrell, one of our gr. 3 teachers who ran 26.2 miles on 10/20/12 in the Niagara Int. marathon!

As we draw toward the end of the agricultural year, we celebrate God’s great harvest of all people throughout history who have shown love, joy and service to others.

That’s why All Saints and its holy eve, Halloween, are made bright with autumn fruits, vegetables and flowers.

That’s why it’s customary to celebrate with apple-bobbing and pumpkin carving and other harvest games. And that’s why All Saints’ Day is begun with a night of trick or treating.

People give and receive hospitality, the hallmark virtue of the saints. This day is something far more than a remembrance of good people who lived on earth...we rejoice in the communion of saints...we’re part of this communion...all creation is united in the Spirit.

This is the day we set aside to pray for all the dead who have gone before us. Our love and work on earth can be a blessing to those who have died, just as their love is a blessing for the living.

All Souls reminds us that it’s good to speak about the dead, and to remember and to pray.

The church continues the remembrance throughout this month of November and into Advent. Days are short and growing shorter. The growing darkness can remind us of the end of days, when time will be no more. At this season, we ask God to speed up the coming of the kingdom, where justice will flower, where life will be lived in all its fullness, where death itself will die.
