The Gospels for the last couple of weeks have spoken to us about being like children– loving, trusting and caring for others. Has that really sunk in? Do we really listen? Are we good examples for our children and for all those around us? Do we care for others?

ALFF

Living The Word

We have heard lately about forming consciences for Faithful Citizenship. It is a reflection on Catholic teaching and political life written by the United States Catholic Bishops. In this article, the Bishops reflect upon the fact that as a nation, we share many blessings and strengths, including a tradition of religious freedom and political participation. Today, we face challenges that are clearly political and also moral. As Catholics, following the Gospel of Jesus, we need to be proactive. Our nation was founded on the concepts of ‘life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness’. The ability to live life itself is not fully protected, especially for unborn children, the elderly and the very ill. We try to be people of peace, yet we are a nation at war. We pledge ‘liberty and justice for all,’ but we are often divided by race, ethnicity, and economic inequality. We are a nation of immigrants who struggle to address the challenges of the many new immigrants in our midst. Our society was built on the strength of our families. Today, we are called to defend marriage and offer moral and economic support for family life. We are a powerful nation in a violent world and should make every effort to confront terror and provide for a safer, just, and peaceful world. We are an affluent society where too many live in poverty, lack health care and the necessities of life. We are part of a global community facing threats to the environment that must sustain us. These challenges are at the center of the quest for the common good. For many years, the bishops of the United States have shared Catholic teachings on political life. They did this by issuing statements every four years based on political responsibility or ‘faithful citizenship.’ They do this in light of new challenges facing our nation and world. This is not new teaching but affirms the Gospel teachings. As Catholics, we need to consider the challenges and contribute to greater justice and peace for all people. ‘Faithful citizenship’ is based on the teaching of Vatican Council II’s Declaration on Religious Liberty (Dignitatis Humanae). It says that “society itself may enjoy the benefits of justice and peace, which result from [people’s] faithfulness to God and his holy will” (no. 6). The work for justice requires that the mind and the heart of Catholics be educated and formed to know and practice the whole faith. This statement highlights the role of the Church in the formation of conscience and the moral responsibility of each Catholic to hear, receive, and act upon the Church’s teaching in the lifelong task of forming his or her own conscience. With this foundation, Catholics are better able to evaluate policy positions, party platforms, and candidates’ promises and actions in light of the Gospel and the moral and social teaching of the Church in order to help build a better world. In this statement on Faithful Citizenship, the bishops do not intend to tell Catholics for whom or against whom to vote. The purpose is to help Catholics form their consciences in accordance with God’s truth. It is recognized that the responsibility to make choices in political life rests with each individual in light of a properly formed conscience, and that participation goes well beyond casting a vote in a particular election.

Twenty-Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time

The work for justice requires educated thought. Catholics are encouraged to be active in the political process, particularly in these challenging times. The source of information for this article was gleaned from the USCCB’s writings on Faithful Citizenship. More information can be found via the internet. It is important for us as Catholics to follow the teachings of Jesus as given to us through the Gospel. We need to pray about and live out these teachings and utilize the information given to us through the Bishops of the United Stated for form and act upon our own conscience. What would Jesus do?

MISSION STATEMENT We the people of St. Gabriel’s Parish, are members of the body of Christ, a spiritual community nourished by prayer and the Eucharist, joyfully committed to carrying out the mission of Jesus. In working together, we share our gifts and proclaim: We are a family that is welcoming and caring, that celebrates our faith.

BAPTISMS We welcome into our family all newly baptized Christians and offer congratulations to the parents of: On a recent Saturday - I had 8am Mass - 2 Funerals at 9 & 10am - 2 Weddings at 12 & 2pm - the 4pm Mass, Confessions - help with the 7pm Mass - and Confessions. I am truly sorry but I can not keep up with this schedule - It is not fair for anyone - not for the daily Mass - not for the funeral families - not for the wedding couple - not for the weekend regulars - and not for those going to confession. Whenever we have a wedding or a funeral it is a parish celebration. Anyone can attend the wedding or funeral as a Mass and can receive Holy Communion. I really miss Fr. John. I hope and pray he will be with us in days. But Fr. John can not be overworked. On the usual weekend there are 12 Masses and there are only two of us. So starting in November - if a funeral comes in Monday through Friday, there will be no 11:30am Mass. Call the rectory before you come. You can attend the funeral Mass and receive Holy Communion. If there is a funeral on Saturday, there will be no 8am Mass, but you can attend the 9am funeral and receive Holy Communion. We are all part of the Journey of Faith and Grace. Many parishes have had to merge with other parishes, and many parishes have closed. The priest shortage is real. More & more priests are retiring and getting sick. Please pray for priestly vocations. There will be only one ordination next year, and my class reaches the retirement age, and all 24 classmates could retire. The Church wants the priests to have energy and a deep prayerful faith. A priest can not do this if they have to say too many Masses. Priests are supposed to say one Mass a day. Only in necessity can he say two - but never more than three. This is for the good of the faithful. I love Mass. I love celebrating Mass. I will always try my best to do all I can. God bless you & your family. Love & Prayers,

Elma, New York We begin our classes for Grades 9 & 10 this Tuesday, Oct. 16th, 7-8pm. We always look forward to working with our freshmen and sophomores. They have lots of enthusiasm, and once you can get them talking, they have so much to offer. Generally, they are very open to what their teachers have to offer. And what their teachers have to offer that is HUGE (so much more huge that Billy F. could ever offer). This, of course, is the gift of Faith. Our 9th grade curriculum is Morality and Ethics. Just how do we live our lives...how do we walk the walk...how effectively do our words and behavior reflect our belief in God? Our young folks will be asked to honestly examine their words and actions, asking themselves whether they are reflecting the values and ethics of the Gospel of Jesus. They will be challenged, but this is good. Soul-searching is good for them...and it is good for us. If we really were to be put on trial for being a Christian, would there be enough evidence to convict us? In Grade 10, we will be inviting our sophomores to “soak up” the Good News of the Old and New Testaments via the Great Adventure Bible Timeline; a journey through the Bible, if you will. This will be our second year of using this curriculum, and we can only hope that our students are as excited about it as we are. How can we go wrong by helping our young folks learn about the Word of God?

3rd Grade parents and guardians: please mark your calendars if you have not yet done so for Tuesday, Nov. 20th. We will meet for a brief Night of Reflection at 7 pm in the parish hall. We will be talking about the Eucharist and ways to effectively prepare our young disciples of Jesus for their First Holy Communions. You will be able to select a Mass in May for your child’s First Holy Eucharist, and sign up that night for that Mass. We will have you out by 8 pm.

We always welcome feedback and suggestions. We invite any of our families to do so. This past year we invited our home schooling families to provide us with short summaries of how their journey of faith went; and to offer us any suggestions they might have on how we might improve our service to families. That invitation stands for this year as well. Now, a few words from Sarah, one of last year’s 3rd graders who was home schooled? “I have learned that the bread is the body of God, and the wine is the blood of God. Also, I have learned to spread the word of God. Another thing is I’ve leaned how to be kind, nice, to be thankful for my family, food, shelter, water, and clothes. I learned more about church. I will always love God. I did my 1st Communion this year. I received the body of God. I have also learned 10 Commandments. I love to learn more things about the church. Love, Sarah D. Thank you Sarah...words of wisdom for all of us!

The Sanctuary Light will be lit this week in Memory of EDWARD JOZWIAK JR. by Ted & Dolores Niedziela

God makes a promise...faith believes it...hope anticipates it...patience quietly awaits it.
