Living The Word

2

Elma, New York

We read in the book of Genesis, that in the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth, the sun and the moon, the oceans and the mountains, the plants and animals and pronounced each of them ‘good.’ God seemed to improve each of His creations with the next. On the sixth day of creation, God created man and called him ‘very good.’ Then God said ‘it is not good that the man should be alone.’ And then God created woman. Adam was not really alone because God was with him. However, something was missing. Adam was lonely. Adam saw Eve as his equal— bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh. Adam recognized in Eve an equal taken out of his side so that they could stand side-by-side in front of God. Through her existence, Adam learned how to love another person.

ALFF

We know that God is love, so for human beings to be most God-like, we need to learn how to love. Adam learned that through human love. The family based on marriage is a wonderful image of God in the world. Just as with God, the love of the Father and the Son generated the Holy Spirit, so too the love of husband and wife can generate a third person, who is both living fruit of their love and a means for that love to grow. This past week we celebrated the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi. Francis of Assisi was a poor man who inspired the Church by taking the gospel literally—not in a narrow fundamentalist sense, but by actually following all that Jesus said and did, joyfully, without limit and without a sense of selfimportance. We cheapen the memory of St. Francis of Assisi by reducing him to the saint of animals. St. Francis is also the saint of peace and love of all creation. His prayer is: ‘Make me an instrument of your peace.’ Hopefully, we should at least try to live true to that prayer. Love begets love. The readings for this Sunday speak about love, the love of a man and woman united for life in the sacrament of marriage. We need to love and care for each other as creations of our loving God. No matter what the situation, not loving or violence of any form, including emotional assault, cannot have a part in any relationship, particularly marriage. Marriage is sacred. It is a gift given by God. It is a sign of the presence of God’s love in the world when it is lived with a sacrificial love. Marriage demands sacrificial love. Husbands and wives need to accept their spouse’s humanity, recognize their own humanity, and still continue to love. A couple needs to practice the sacrificial love of Jesus Christ. This prepares them to handle the real crises: serious sickness, the death of a loved one, giving in to the temptations of the world. All these can destroy a marriage unless a person can image Jesus’ love and sacrifice his or her own pride for the sake of their spouse. One of the reasons why many marriages fail is that one or both parties refuse to truly and freely love. If a man or a woman routinely confronts opposition with violence, even violence against oneself, then that person is not going to be able to enter into a lasting marriage. People need to take care of their anger and the stress that may have caused it, or their anger will ruin them as well as their marriages. TwentySeventh Sunday in Ordinary Time

Love conquers all. We are made in the image and likeness of God. Jesus is the Divine Image of the Father. We are Jesus’ brothers and sisters. We have the same Father. We can be better than the violent world around us. We can be better than the worst inclinations within us. We can be better. Jesus makes us better.

MISSION STATEMENT We the people of St. Gabriel’s Parish, are members of the body of Christ, a spiritual community nourished by prayer and the Eucharist, joyfully committed to carrying out the mission of Jesus. In working together, we share our gifts and proclaim: We are a family that is welcoming and caring, that celebrates our faith.

WEDDING BANNS Bann I Amber Stribing & Eric Thierrin We join the Universal Catholic Church in a Year of Faith celebrating the work of the Vatican Council II - from 19621965. This Council changed our Church forever. Beginning with the Mass - into our own language and the ability to receive the whole Body and Blood of Jesus in the form of bread and wine. The Holy Father has asked us to start a new evangelization - an outreach of the Gospel. Our Diocese asked us to consider these groups: 1) Moms - Mothers are the first teacher of Jesus to their children. 2) Dads - Fathers are partners of Moms - and they reflect the Fatherhood of God - who loves us unconditionally. 3) Children - They give us a sense of awe and wonder of God’s love. 4) Teens - They give us the enthusiasm of youth and a passion for service. 5) Single Adults - Who help us to remember each person has a vocation - called by God and they give service to the Church and World. 6) Married Couples - Who live the Sacrament of marriage for mutual support and the raising of children. 7) Grandparents - Who share the wisdom of experience and joy. Many help families to grow closer to Jesus by bringing children to Mass, school and religious education.

Bann II Jennifer Hejmanowski & Jason Welsh Kristina Howard & Daniel Twentyfive Carrie Bracco & Matthew Brem Bann III Lauren Cichon & Andrew Musial Amanda Weiss & James Bugman Jr.

Elma, New York We extend hearty congratulations to the 163 Confirmandi who celebrated the Sacrament of Confirmation with Bishop Malone this past Tuesday. We are happy that you all are members of our parish family. You belong here, and you will always be welcome here. We are delighted that you have chosen to take this next step in your faith formation. Please...always keep in mind: *You are loved *Do the same. *Let others know that they are loved. (evangelization) Imagine a world filled with Jesus’ disciples! May we all: ***Grow in our conversion to Jesus Christ ***accept the demands of discipleship ***decide each day to choose life in Christ ***live as active members of the Catholic Church Our 9th and 10th Grade classes will begin Tues. Oct. 16th. Home-schooling families; if you have not yet picked up your books, curriculums, and resource packets, they are available for you. Just stop into our office during office hours or class times. There is so much good information out there, as well as lots of really good ideas on the internet. We provide many of these websites dealing with faith formation to our homeschooling families. We would be happy to share this list with any other members of our parish. Simply stop by the office and we will be happy to provide you with one. One of the websites we always encourage you to checkout is thehungersite.com. This is one that you want to go to every day, because you can donate food to those suffering from hunger, at no cost to you. Simply, click onto: Click here to give—it’s free! You and do this once a day! Two more websites come to mind that we would like to share with you. The first is: orangeparents.org . This website comes highly recommended by a few colleagues in faith formation. You will find very interesting, and hopefully helpful info on parenting and on bringing up your children in the faith. And, we would like to recommend paxetbonumcomm.org. or paxetbonumcomm.wordpress.com. This website’s creator, Gerry Straub of the San Damiano Foundation, serves the poor through the power of film. I know Gerry quite well. Our Hamburg High School’s Hunger Action Group was fortunate enough to meet Gerry and schedule one of his “Poverty and Prayer’ presentations at HHS. Our students were very moved by his presentation and films. At our Rel. Ed. office here at St. Gabe’s, we have five of Gerry’s films: Poverty and Prayer (my personal favorite), Room at the Inn, The Patients of a Saint, Uganda Project, and his latest, Mud Pies and Kites. You are welcome to borrow a film, if interested. Their recent short promo DVD entitled “Who We Are, What We Do is a short, fast paced visually compelling video showing how we can help create a more compassionate world. Perhaps you can check it out!
