ADVENTURE. Emmanuel is a place where students drive the research behind scientific breakthroughs. Captain championship teams alongside fellow athletes who become everlasting friends. Serve those in need through work that is both meaningful and energizing. There are no halfway measures when it comes to happiness: it derives from giving your all to the passions and pursuits that move you. You’re ready to put your heart into something bold and ambitious.

Let’s get started. 1

Look—And Leap

the sho rte st p ath fro m

The intellectual explorations of Emmanuel students are bounded only by the limits of their curiosity. In the liberal arts tradition, they cross disciplinary boundaries as they track down the answers to burning questions. Working closely with professors in small class settings, they challenge one another—and themselves—to reevaluate conclusions, reconsider their ideas, and to revise and revise again. The work you will undertake in confronting those questions will play a vital role in achieving your aspirations and broadening your sense of what’s possible.

ARTS, HUMANITIES & SOCIAL SCIENCES Natural

SCIENCES

Make connections across disciplines that spark new insights. Programs in the arts, humanities and social sciences will prepare you for success by challenging you to synthesize complex topics and explore provocative ideas. A philosophy major studies economics to grasp Keynes’ ideas about the nature of the marketplace. In an education course, an art major gains a deeper understanding of the learning process behind creative self-expression. From sociology and history to international studies and graphic design, our interdisciplinary programs will require you to analyze those points of intersection. Along the way, you’ll make unexpected discoveries about the world—and about yourself—that will strengthen your capacity to solve problems, challenge assumptions and grow in wisdom.

Study at a center of scientific innovation. A robust curriculum supported by teaching scholars. Stateof-the-art facilities and technology. Opportunities to join distinguished teams of researchers. If you’re an aspiring scientist, you’ve come to the right place. At Emmanuel, you can participate in faculty-led research as early as your first year—tackling projects often reserved for graduate students at other institutions. With the world-class research and healthcare facilities of the Longwood Medical and Academic Area just steps away, and Merck Research Laboratories-Boston on our campus, you’ll do more than study scientific breakthroughs: you’ll help create them.

Build a business career that’s both purposeful and profitable. Success in today’s business world is about creating both social and economic benefit. Emmanuel’s undergraduate business programs help students translate our community’s commitment to innovation and ethical action into the business sphere. You’ll graduate with the technical expertise and moral compass needed to be a responsible leader through a rigorous and relevant program of study that emphasizes collaboration, integrity and real-world experience.

Mentors, Colleagues and Champions Emmanuel professors are outstanding scholars. More important, they’re also collaborators and confidants who are sincerely interested in what and how you think—and committed to your ultimate success. One example of their deep investment in our students’ education is the number of research projects they lead across virtually every academic discipline—projects that are enriched by the active participation of Emmanuel undergraduates. Here’s a small sample: Art Therapy LEGO-based therapies for children with developmental disorders // Biology The role certain genes play in lifespan extension // Biostatics Statistical indicators that predict Alzheimer’s disease // Elementary Education Teaching for social justice // English Manifestations of post-feminism in Sex and the City // History The relationship between prostitution and suffrage in Victorian England // International Studies Pathways to female executive leadership in South America // Mathematics A model for the spread of evolutionary mutations within a population // Neuroscience The similarities and differences in the white matter of brains affected by bipolar disorder and schizophrenia // Political Science Why terrorist groups join electoral politics // Psychology The intersection of beliefs and behaviors about gun safety // Sociology Foster youth’s perceptions on their experiences of aging out of the child welfare system

What do I desire for myself? What is worth desiring? Our Catholic identity complements and expands on the exploratory nature of the liberal arts. Alongside classmates of all backgrounds and beliefs, you’ll reflect on profound questions of faith, meaning and morality. The answers you uncover will have an equally profound effect on the person you will be in years to come.

In a small community like ours, the more you listen to your heart, the more you grow in knowledge, courage and confidence. You’ll be surrounded, challenged and inspired by classmates whose interests may be vastly different than yours—and whose passions are just as intense. You’ll bond, share, debate and explore with your new friends against the backdrop of Boston, opening the door to singular experiences that become unforgettable memories—from wandering the streets of the North End on a quest for gelato to catching a nail biter of a Red Sox game with your lab partner. As you work together on a problem set, harmonize on the stage or help a deserving organization on a service trip, your connections to your fellow Saints will grow deeper each day.

From Engagement to Leadership Our students aren’t solely interested in becoming involved—they also seize opportunities to become leaders. As resident assistants and admissions ambassadors, student government members and Leadership Academy participants, they guide their fellow Saints while demonstrating sincere kinship and compassion. Supported by committed Student Life staff members, they explore new areas of interest, grow as individuals and emerge as effective leaders across a broad range of areas.

From varsity lacrosse to intramural basketball, Emmanuel athletes compete with focus and enthusiasm—and we all come together to support their dedication and resolve. Sometimes, going all in means going all out Thanks to our 16 Division III varsity teams, a wide variety of intramural programs, and our affiliation with the Colleges of the Fenway, you’re virtually guaranteed to find a team to suit your interest and skill level. As you go all out on the field, you’ll build lasting friendships with teammates of wide-ranging backgrounds and academic interests— and a healthy sense of competition. 14

Action and Reaction On the field and in the gym, you’ll strengthen skills that include teamwork, personal responsibility and respect for others. You’ll also have the chance to give back to the community through team-based service activities. This commitment to keep mind and body in top form will serve you well at Emmanuel, and long after.

Strength in numbers Thanks to our affiliation with the Colleges of the Fenway, you’ll have access to hundreds of events and performances, student groups, and intramural teams across all six institutions. You’ll also be able to cross-register for courses at any participating school—more than 2,300 classes in total—multiplying your academic opportunities considerably.

THE world’s greatest classroom.

Many schools talk about being “in the Boston area”; Emmanuel is at the city’s very heart. This means that world-class recreational and entertainment options are always at your fingertips. While many of these activities are a blast—from ice skating on the Common to browsing the shops on Newbury Street—Emmanuel students do much, much more to immerse themselves in the city we call home. You’ll take advantage of Boston’s reputation as a cultural capital as you choose among the thousands of readings, concerts, exhibitions and theatrical performances that take place here throughout the year. You may land a prestigious internship at a leading organization focused on healthcare, advertising or financial services. You’ll give back to your fellow Bostonians by participating in service programs like the Urban Food Project. Then you’ll make the short trip home to our residential campus—a comfortable haven in the midst of Boston’s buzz.

Don’t Kick Back—Give Back Every year, dozens of Emmanuel students use their spring break as a chance to give back. Traveling to places like Louisiana’s Gulf Coast or the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, they perform purposeful service work that ranges from restoring houses and working in afterschool programs to helping out at soup kitchens. 22

Emmanuel students present their research findings at international conferences, engage with peers in other countries through groups such as the Model United Nations, earn business internships abroad and pursue fellowships throughout the world. It looks something like this: Investigating public health policy in Brazil // Taking steps to combat the HIV epidemic while serving with Swaziland’s El Shaddai Ministries’ children’s home // Performing a traditional Kuchipudi dance in India // Advocating for the rights of disabled workers in Indonesia // Brushing up on your Arabic with the residents of Morocco // Hiking to the first outpost of Tendai Buddhism in Japan // Demonstrating nanotechnology at the international Beijing science festival in China // Getting up close and personal with the marine microbiology in Australia’s Great Barrier Reef The more you know about the wider world, the more likely you are to succeed within it.

At Emmanuel, we believe in expanding students’ education across international borders—an approach that honors the global mission of the College’s founders, the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur. This expansion can happen in many ways: joining one of our multicultural awareness and advocacy clubs; studying the factors that affect geopolitics, world economics and international relations; or participating in service projects at home and abroad. In the process, you’ll meet and befriend people from backgrounds and cultural traditions different from your own—experiences that will help position you to excel in a world that grows smaller each day.

Spread Your Wings Emmanuel offers hundreds of opportunities to become a global citizen, including courses with a built-in travel component, study abroad programs lasting a semester or a year, and service trips organized by the Colleges of the Fenway’s GEO Center. With more than 500 options, there’s sure to be an international program that aligns with your goals and interests.

Hearts as wide as the

Bringing the Catholic Intellectual Tradition to Life In the spirit of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur, Emmanuel delivers an education that combines intellectually challenging academics with the advancement of justice and peace. Here, you will act on your beliefs in ways that benefit yourself and others, and grasp the meaning of the Sisters’ call to live with “hearts as wide as the world.”

More than 80 percent of our students participate in service initiatives, contributing more than 45,000 hours each year. Here are a few examples of how we serve: After-school programs // Charity walks // College access and success program for youth // College-wide days of service // Community service summer fellowships // Emmanuel College Community Outreach // Four-Year Service Program // Habitat for Humanity // Jumpstart // Saints Giving Back // Saturday/Sunday Service Groups // Service-Learning Courses // Spark the Truth

Our community embraces students from all faith traditions, who join together in a commitment to think deeply about the “why” of their education, as well as the “what.” Spiritual retreats and campus ministry programs provide time and space to contemplate the relationship between your academic and personal journeys— a process that lies at the heart of the Catholic intellectual tradition.

Service Takes Many Forms A commitment to service and social justice is a key facet of Emmanuel’s Catholic identity. As we work to improve our communities and the world at large—both during and after Emmanuel—we challenge ourselves to lead, act and give generously. Perhaps the strongest demonstration of this belief can be found at Emmanuel’s Notre Dame Campus, which is home to a dedicated servicelearning community embedded within Boston’s Roxbury neighborhood.
