A New Chapter for Healthcare at Emmanuel

When the College welcomed its first cohort of traditional undergraduate nursing students to campus in the fall of 2019, students joined a longstanding tradition of excellence in the field. Emmanuel has been a leader in nursing education for over 40 years, through its RN-to-BSN program, launched in 1980, and the Master of Science in Nursing, which launched in 2011.

For career inspiration, Erin looked no further than her family of first responders and their calling to “help people on their worst days.” Since joining the Emmanuel community, she’s helped to shape the culture of the School of Nursing as president of the brand new Students of Nursing Club. In this role, she serves as a resource to her classmates, and also helps them make connections with peers and potential employers. In turn, she’s found her professors have been more than willing to do their part to help her succeed.

While Erin has been able to successfully translate the skills learned in Emmanuel’s nursing labs to her clinical rotations, the most valuable lessons she has honed working with patients center on communication and understanding. “Working with patients who may be going through emotional experiences, or have gone through them in the past, has truly taught me you never know what your patient has experienced or is experiencing,” she says.

“Everyone deserves the best care and the best attitude you can provide. This can make all of the difference in a patient’s healing process.”

As a nursing student, you will launch into your nursing coursework as early as your first semester, with a first-year nursing seminar that will assist you in acquiring the essential skills, techniques and behaviors that will lead to success as a student, a lifelong learner and a beginning member of the nursing profession. You’ll have access to nursing faculty right away and will also be guided by both an academic advisor and a nursing faculty advisor—resources that will set you up for a meaningful and rewarding journey.

The Joanne DiGeronimo Migliaro and Anthony Migliaro Nursing Skills Laboratory simulates a real clinical setting, giving you the chance to practice a range of skills such as medication administration, sterile technique, IV therapy, and tracheostomy/nasogastric care safely.

The labs host state-of-the-art equipment including Omnicell, IV pumps, medication carts, blood pressure cuffs, enteral feeding pumps, stretchers and vital sign machines.

The School’s simulation laboratories allow faculty to control fast-paced patient scenarios and observe and guide students in real time.

CLINICAL PREPARATION

Emmanuel’s nursing program prepares students to be generalists in the nursing field. Every nursing student will have clinical experiences across nursing specialties including medical surgical, mental health, pediatrics, maternity/women’s health and community nursing. The program culminates in the Nursing Capstone, during which each student will work closely with a practicing registered nurse—a rich experience made possible by our location in the Longwood Medical and Academic Area and longstanding relationships with premier Boston hospitals.

CULTURE AND DIVERSITY IN HEALTH CARE

In this new travel course, offered during the spring semester of junior year, transcultural nursing, spirituality and lifestyles are explored, and their impact on health care services are analyzed. The use of music, art, literature and healing/touch modalities that enhance caregiving will be studied. Travel is not a mandatory component of the nursing program. This travel course for nurses has traditionally been to Italy, but nursing students may also take advantage of many other opportunities to travel abroad through Emmanuel’s courses in such places as Ireland, Paris, Spain, South Africa, India and more.

INTRO TO NURSING (CLINICAL)

What is the role of the nurse as a member of the healthcare team? Over the years, nursing has become more complex, with higher acuity patients in the hospitals, and with it has come increased need for nurses that are both highly educated and highly skilled. Your first clinical focuses on the current state of the nursing profession and the most recent trends in healthcare. Learn more about client needs, safety, communication, critical thinking, clinical judgement, ethical and legal issues, and cultural diversity.

NURSING IN THE COMMUNITY

Nurses play a critical role in improving the health and well-being of the communities they serve by educating on illness, disease prevention, safe health practices and how to obtain health care services. In this course, you will explore dynamics of health promotion and prevention as impacted by global, societal and cultural influences, as well as identify current nursing concepts and focus their applications in public health and community settings with individuals, families, and at-risk populations.
