sports news Outdoor Track Wraps Up Regular Season at Brown The Emmanuel men’s and women’s track teams concluded the regular season portion of their outdoor schedules on Sunday, April 27th at the Brown University Invitational.
The Saints concluded the 2008 season with a strong showing in the first-ever Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) men’s volleyball tournament. Emmanuel finished second, falling to top-seeded Rivier College in the finals, 3-0.
On the men’s side, Rob Allen ’08 ran an impressive double during the day, splitting a time of 23.10 in the 200-meter dash (3rd place) and following it up with a 6th place effort in the 400 (51.06). Thomas Maher ’11 had a solid showing in multiple events as well, taking 6th in the 110-meter hurdles (16.18) and 10th in the 400meter hurdles (59.81). Matt Hickey ’08 ran 2:04.22 for the 800 as well.
During the title match, captain Michael Townsend ’10 notched 12 kills and nine digs to lead the Saints, while outside-hitter Curtis Abram ’10 added nine kills and six digs of his own. The Saints entered the tournament seeded second and faced 3rd-seeded Johnson & Wales University in their opening match. The Emmanuel men swept the Wildcats in straight sets, 30-26, 34-32, 30-23. Townsend led the Saints, recording a double-double with 20 kills, 10 digs, and four aces. Abram and Stephen Keeney ’10 chipped in with six kills apiece in the win as well. Setter Taylor Lowe ’10 paced the attack with 37 assists, while classmate Gregg MacDonald ’10 and Sophanna Lout ’08 tallied six digs each.
Christine Gaspar ’09 led the way for the women, finishing 6th in the 5000 in 19:28.98. Cat Lariviere ’08 competed in the 800 and 1500-meter runs, finishing in times of 2:36.63 and 5:08.86, respectively. Sarah Soldano ’11 ran a time of 13.91 for the 100meter dash and competed in the long jump (4.54 meters), while classmate Alison Lynch ’11 led Emmanuel in the 400 (1:07.74). Prior to the meet, the teams competed at Connecticut College’s Silfen Invitational on April 19th. The Saints had several personal bests on top of posting new marks in Emmanuel’s record books. Gaspar won the women’s 10K in a time of 43:11.55, while Erin Daley ’11 threw her personal best in the discus with a toss of 61-3. Maureen Kellett ’11 ran a PR in the 1500, while Megan Reichel ’10 did the same in both the 100- and 200meter runs. The women’s 4x100-meter (Ashley Adamson ’11, Katie Beaton ’10. established new schools records with times of 54.49 and 4:35.51, respectively. For the men, Michael Thurnauer ’08 set a new mark in the 400-meter hurdles (59.09) and the javelin (1449), while John Heiber ’11 and Pat Welton ’10 set personal bests in the 400.
For those athletes that qualified, the Division III New England Championships will be held on May 2nd at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy’s facilities in New London, Conn. The ECAC Championships will take place May 15th at Springfield College as well.
For their efforts, both Townsend and MacDonald were named to the GNAC All-Tournament Team. The Saints finished the season with a 14-15 overall record. Three members will depart due to graduation: Lout, Brendan Ellis ’08 and Russell Brodmerkle ’08. All three were honored during the team’s final regular season game against Wentworth Institute of Technology on March 27th.
Softball Ends ‘08 on High Note The Saints’ softball team put up three wins in the final two days of its season, defeating Johnson & Wales in back-to-back games on April 19th and completing its regular schedule with a victory over Albertus Magnus on April 21st. Emmanuel outscored its opponents by a margin of 36-14 during the contests, which including a 14-9 come-from-behind victory in the first game against the Wildcats in which the Saints rallied with nine runs in the sixth. The Saints won 12-3 in the second game and defeated Albertus Magnus by a score of 10-2 as well. The Saints say goodbye to this year’s senior class, which includes tri-captains Stephanie Rege ’08, Jennifer Walsh ’08 and Nicole Ferraro ’08.
