Students Volunteer in and Around Boston During Annual Day of Service First-year students took part in their inaugural Emmanuel volunteer experience during the College’s 15th Annual Day of Service on September 7th. Nearly 430 students participated in the tradition, volunteering their time to Greater Boston area nonprofit organizations throughout the day for a total of 1,724 hours of service. Students spent time among 10 different service sites, which included the Franklin Park Zoo, the Greater Boston Food Bank, Community Servings, Cradles to Crayons, Muddy River Clean-Up, Marian Manor, St. Ambrose Family Shelter, St. Mary of the Angels Parish in Roxbury, Mission Grammar School, and the newly added site of ReVision Urban Farm, a small garden in Boston that provides fresh, affordable, locally grown produce to families in the city

“Serving the community is an important part of Emmanuel’s culture and tradition,” said Associate Director of Community Service and Service Learning Deirdre BradleyTurner. “Inviting new students to take part in a service event during Welcome Week is a wonderful way to welcome students to Emmanuel. It is an opportunity for new students to get involved, meet other students and see and serve one of Boston’s many neighborhoods.” ReVision Urban Farm was a new service site for the Annual Day of Service this year.

with limited incomes and transportation access. The Annual Day of Service introduced new students to some of the volunteer opportunities available to them at

Emmanuel and throughout Boston. The day also allowed for new students to get to know one another and bond with their new classmates through service.

In addition to the Day of Service, the College also held the annual Volunteer Fair on September 15th. The fair featured various organizations throughout the Greater Boston area. Students made connections with representatives from each organization and chose volunteer opportunities that proved the best fit for them.

Art Therapy Students, Faculty, Alum Volunteer at MFA Event for Military Families Emmanuel College Special Instructor of Art Emily Parsons, students Brittany Jordan ’11, Christine Aufiero ’11, Michaela Alexander ’11, and alumna Jennifer Walsh ’08 volunteered at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston’s (MFA) special event “Artist for a Day” on August 28th in an effort to reach out to families of U.S. armed forces service members. The event was in conjunction with the MFA’s Artful Adventures Program, which provides opportunities for children ages three and older to connect with art and culture through engagement with the museum’s collections, combining gallery exploration with an art-making activity. As part of the art activity, the Emmanuel volunteers guided children through the creative process, using the art lesson as a means of teaching participants how to communicate ideas and emotions through art. Children were provided sketchbooks to take

“Making art is relaxing and enjoyable, which in itself is therapeutic,” said Parsons, who herself has loved ones in the service. “This was a fun, low-key day for these families. Always having that feeling of uncertainty hanging over their heads makes it even more important for these families to have an outlet for expression and have an opportunity to enjoy some time together.”

Emmanuel News NOVEMBER 2010

Emmanuel News is printed on recycled paper.

Although Anna Mary Bigelow Thompson was unable to attend her 75th class reunion in 2007, she was happy to visit the campus a year prior during registration week, and was so impressed with the expansion of the campus and the friendly students. Anna continues to enjoy the many cultural activities in Pittsburgh, Pa., attending concerts and gallery openings. She fondly remembers the wonderful years at Emmanuel College.

2010-2011 Marks College’s Largest Undergraduate Enrollment in History This fall, Emmanuel welcomed the largest undergraduate enrollment in its 91-year history. Enrollment has more than tripled from 528 undergraduates in 2000 to 1,750 now currently enrolled for the 2010-2011 academic year.

Since the College became a coeducational four-year college in the fall of 2001, applications have risen dramatically as have our academic standards, making Emmanuel a school of first choice for an increasing number of high school graduates.

Emmanuel Squad Performs Well at Boston Area Model UN Conference Emmanuel College’s Model UN team had a great showing at the Boston Area Model UN (BarMUN) Conference during the weekend of September 30th-October 3rd, hosted by Boston University’s International Affairs Association. Three students won awards at the conclusion of the weekend-long conference; Jason Young ’12, Adam Campbell ’13 and Alec Simonette ’14. Along with winning Honorable Delegate for New France, Simonette also won the Lufthansa raffle, which includes a free trip to anywhere in Europe. The BarMUN Conference is a collegiate conference hosted each October by Boston University’s International Affairs Association. It

is a multi-disciplined, fast paced, and interactive simulation involving over 200 collegiate delegates and 100 staff members. “[It] is a great starting event for the members of the club, especially new members because of the smaller committee sizes, which allow more participation and hands-on experience in resolutions,” said Young. Additional Emmanuel participants included: Andrew Moyseowicz ’11, Micha Maalouf ’11, Nora Cashell ’14, Angela Anthony ’14, Andrew Young ’13, Jack Davidson ’14, Tim O’Sullivan ’14, Cesar Zayas ’14 and Chris Fitzpatrick ’13.

We have been pleased to hear from some of our classmates, both near and far. Therese Senecal Bernique (Saintes, France) continues to visit her favorite Spanish city of Santiago de Compostela. Martina Gugger Bursik (Faribault, Minn) has welcomed her seventh great-grandchild!

The class lost a dear and treasured friend when Father Joseph McGlone died unexpectedly last fall. Father said Mass several times for ’35 at 33 Hancock St. He was one of us!

With help from the College, I finally was able to reach Agnes Hanrahan Sweeney through her daughter, Anne Sweeney. I was thrilled to have Agnes call me. We had a long conversation recalling classmates and professors of our college days. Agnes was another of our Boston schoolteachers and is now living in Boston.

We offer our condolences to the family of Barbara McNamara, who passed away on March 26th, 2009; M. Rita Fougere Manocchio, who went to God on October 2, 2008, and had moved permanently to Tempe, Ariz., in 1994; and Helen McEttrick Cogan, who died on November 23, 2008. May they rest in God’s love.

The late Martha Doherty Mooney’s daughter, Martha “Markey” Mooney Waltien ’70 and her husband Al Waltien, came for the long reunion weekend from Long Island, N.Y., and picked me up to go to Sister Janet’s gala on Thursday night. And it was indeed a gala...in a glass house on campus!

I am finally finishing my book about World War II and seeking a publisher. It has taken too long! Too many distractions, like...going aboard the USS Constitution when she got underway on August 27th. Present were over 100 Navy chief selectees, chosen throughout the country to complete their qualifying on Old Ironsides. I watched them climb the masts to the top...and come down...including women! And listened to them sing “Anchors Aweigh” as I have never heard it sung before. It was spectacular! Being there was certainly a great privilege for this alumna of ’35.

Our class numerals led the procession into the Saturday evening liturgy on Alumni Weekend. I was sad to walk alone but glad to have 1935 represented. While waiting for the line to form, I visited with the late Mary O’Brien Donahue’s daughter, Jane Donahue Eberwein ’65, and her husband Bob. They come to every reunion from Birmingham, Mich., where the Doctors Eberwein are professors at Oakland University in Rochester, Mich.

I had wonderful telephone conversations with classmates Dorothea Hoar at Eventide in Quincy, Mass., and with Sister Elisabeth McNamara at Holy Child Convent in Rye, N.Y.

home to continue to develop their sense of self-expression. More and more, art therapy is being recognized as an effective approach to helping military members and their families overcome psychological and emotional challenges. The form of expressive therapy is not simply cathartic, but aids in improving or maintaining mental health, fostering self-expression, enhancing coping skills and managing stress.

Mary Leonard Murray and her daughter worked with members of the library staff to find a copy of the book “Logic and Epistemology” by Father Cotter. The library lent her the original copy she used when she was a student at the College, which she returned with a lovely note thanking the staff: “It (the book) has been revised several times since Fr. Cotter first wrote it, but it is still full of wisdom…your staff has been extremely helpful and courteous in making this available for me.”
