ach fall at Emmanuel College is full of excitement and it continues to be with great enthusiasm that I share with you such historic and transformative developments. While we are changing, with increasing enrollment, new buildings and expanding academic programs, we frame our experience with the words tradition and transformation — a

future grounded in our mission and history. This fall, we welcome 630 new traditional undergraduate students to Emmanuel College, bringing our total undergraduate enrollment to its highest level ever of 1750 students. These new students come from all over the country and the world, and bring to the College many talents and a high-level of academic achievement. To further elevate the educational experience of these students, this summer we began building a new Academic Science Center, to be constructed on the site of St. James Hall. I had the honor of offering a blessing for this site in July and reflected on the many Sisters of Notre Dame, faculty members and students who have lived and worked in the building since it was constructed in 1958. The Academic Science Center not only enhances the academic opportunities we can offer

our students — with state-of-the-art classrooms, laboratories and research space — but its design uses space to build community and to foster collaboration among both faculty and students. This new Academic Science Center is just one of the steps we have taken as a College to solidify our position as an institution offering an exceptional education in the liberal arts and sciences, preparing our students for the careers of the future. At the very heart of Emmanuel’s educational mission are our faculty members and our students. The feature story in this issue focuses on the impressive research on which faculty and students are so successfully collaborating. I find this faculty-student research to be most inspiring because it illustrates so compellingly what makes an Emmanuel education unique. The College has also appointed a new Vice President of Academic Affairs, Dr. Frank E. Scully, Jr. You will learn more about Dr. Scully in this issue of Emmanuel Magazine, and how his experience as a professor, a scientific researcher and an administrator, as well as his commitment to the Catholic intellectual tradition, will help us to further expand our mission. In so many ways you, our alumni and friends, are part of this Emmanuel mission. I am grateful for your generosity which supports the College. It is very focused on developing students’ skills, on getting them to understand what research is,” said Dr. Northrup. “It helps them to learn how meticulous you have to be in your process. They learn good communication skills and they learn to meet deadlines. For students, it’s really the first time they get to understand what it is that drives scholars, the excitement of research.” Dr. Northrup credits faculty members both for their strong commitment to the program and for guiding their undergraduate researchers. “Faina Ryvkin, for example, is not just teaching her students how to conduct research; she’s teaching them how to operate in the academic world. She is mentoring them in a way that will help them to be very successful when they leave Emmanuel, mentoring them to be professionals.” The following vignettes illuminate the overwhelming success of the program, and how faculty and students at Emmanuel are benefiting from this unique initiative academically and forming life-long relationships.

Of Heroines, Sleuths and Education

------------------------------For Michaela Henry ’08, her research work with English Department Chair Dr. Lisa Stepanski has not only allowed her to examine in new ways a story which first captured her imagination as a child, it has also helped to shape and refine her ultimate professional goal — to become a college English professor. Michaela and Dr. Stepanski share a common fervor for heroines and female empowerment in literature, and most specifically, in Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women. This mutual admiration of Alcott became strikingly apparent when Michaela, a student in Dr. Stepanski’s Persuasive Strategies course, first walked into her office and saw a bust of the author. “I knew it was the perfect place for me.” “Growing up, I almost got in trouble for having a copy of Little Women with me all the time — it would fall on people’s heads from the top of my locker, I read it during the school day and snuck it into my bed at night,” continued Michaela. “I have read it a million times, starting in the third grade. Little Women is one of those books I’ve gone back to because it’s so easy to relate to at any age.” Dr. Stepanski’s interest in heroines also started at a young age as she read the Nancy Drew books, Pride and Prejudice and Little Women. When a biography of Louisa May Alcott was published in the 1970s, it re-sparked her interest in the Little Women and Little Men author. She later wrote a dissertation on Alcott and her

family as a doctoral student at the University of New Hampshire. Now, Dr. Stepanski is a frequent lecturer on the Alcotts, most recently during the July 2007 Summer Conversation Series and Teacher Institute at Bronson Alcott’s Concord School of Philosophy. Every year the series features some of the foremost experts in the field. Dr. Stepanski is in the process of writing a book on the Alcotts and Michaela has become an integral part of its research, examining articles from the last 10 years about the Alcott family to help update Dr. Stepanski’s bibliography. The pair meet frequently to discuss relevant themes and to refine the research process. “It’s great to have another person who is so interested in the subject matter to bounce ideas off of about my manuscript,” said Dr. Stepanski. “I have always found that my students really jump start me in terms of thinking about things from a different perspective.” By participating in the faculty-student research program at Emmanuel, Michaela has been able to expand her understanding of an entire genre of writing and to look further into Louisa May Alcott’s world. “This work extends beyond the classroom and really gives me the opportunity to delve into a subject that is very personal to me and to stretch my legs academically,” said Michaela. A focus of Dr. Stepanski’s research and writing, which Michaela has learned about and contributed to, is the relationship between female authors and the males in their lives, particularly Louisa May and her

father, Bronson. “When you look at these 19th century women writers’ lives, there is evidence that they had a father, brother or husband who took an interest in their education. You don’t become a Louisa May Alcott at that time without a father who tells you that it is okay to go out, to have a career and to not get married. He really enjoyed his daughter’s success and I find that very interesting for that time period.” Dr. Stepanski has also examined, as presented in the Summer Conversational Series, the influence Abby Alcott had on Louisa May as both a mother and a teacher. Additionally, Michaela is helping to research articles for a paper Dr. Stepanski is writing on girl sleuths which will focus on Nancy Drew, as well as The Girl Aviators, a series of books from the early 20th century inspired by real-life pioneering female pilots. The relationship that Michaela and Dr. Stepanski have formed goes well beyond research and enhancing a resume for graduate school. It has created a professional mentoring connection which will be invaluable as Michaela and other research assistants embark on their careers. “I think that the availability of this program is something that helps to attract and keep high-level students,” said Michaela. “Because of the personal relationships we as students have with our professors here at Emmanuel, it makes faculty-student research a success.” Michaela also served as an instructional assistant for Dr. Stepanski’s First-Year Seminar class, The Power of the Pen,

and also was a writing preceptor for Dr. Stepanski’s RISE (Road to Intellectual Success at Emmanuel) program class this summer. Michaela is preparing to go to graduate school and continue her study of English. She will be writing a thesis and presenting a distinction project during her senior year, and has worked with Assistant Professor of English David Palumbo on a directed study on post-colonial literature and theory. “As a research assistant, you are able to operate as a professional and to even get credit in a book,” said Dr. Stepanski. “If you want to go into academia, as Michaela does, it really helps to have someone to guide you and tell you if it’s the right fit.” Michaela Henry could not agree more. “It’s validating for a professional in your field to let you know you’re heading in the right direction and to keep you on track.”

Issues on the World Stage

------------------------------There are few regions of the world which are as complex and volatile as the Middle East, and keeping up with the day-to-day changes in foreign policies, political unrest and plans for peace is a daunting task. But, it is a job which Laura Dias ’08 relishes because it has dramatically enhanced her learning and will launch her into the next phase of her education. Through Emmanuel’s faculty-student research program, Laura has been working with Professor of Political Science Lenore Martin, a well-known academic in the field of Middle Eastern security, particularly as it

relates to the country of Turkey, the Palestinian-Israeli conflict and the Gulf. Dr. Martin has three books about the Middle East and Turkey to her credit, has traveled the world presenting at conferences, has participated in a conference with Iraqi politicians discussing the Iraqi constitution, and has journeyed through Turkey into the northern Iraqi city of Erbil. It is no wonder that taking five courses with Dr. Martin ignited the interest of Laura, a political science major. That interest has grown to be a primary academic focus for the present and the future. Through this research program, she has been able to take her studies a step further; exploring the ever-changing landscape of the Middle East in ways she would not have in the classroom. Laura monitors news reports in Englishlanguage Turkish newspapers including The Turkish Daily News, The New Anatolian, Hurriyet and Zaman. She also reads arabnews.com, as well as the English editions of the Israeli newspaper Haaretz and the Lebanese Dar Al-Hayat, culling through daily articles on such topics as political developments, economic growth, terrorism, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and peace proposals, and U.S.-Middle East relations. “Working with Dr. Martin has given me the opportunity to understand many different aspects of policy in the Middle East and has broadened my knowledge of both domestic and international interactions in such countries as Syria and Israel, and Turkey’s relationship to the Middle East,” said Laura.

Dr. Martin is one of very few academics in the country who concentrates on Turkey and its role in the Middle East. “Turkey is at a crossroads in terms of its position in the Middle East, as well as its relationship with the U.S. The Turkish-Kurdish terrorist group, the PKK, has become increasingly active and has found a safe haven in northern Iraq. Turkey’s threats to invade northern Iraq to disrupt the PKK camps is something the U.S. fears would further destabilize the country.” Because Turkey is at such a crossroads, keeping up with the latest news from the country and the region is paramount. Laura’s research has been critical as Dr. Martin prepares papers and presentations for various conferences internationally and for a book she intends to write on Turkey and the Middle East. “My interaction with Laura is daily at this point. She charted sections of the various Palestinian-Israeli peace plans for a presentation I made at Florida Atlantic University and was very helpful for a paper I wrote for a conference in Greece on ‘The Turkish-Kurdish Identity Dilemma,’”said Dr. Martin. “In June Laura’s research was crucial in preparing a presentation for delivery in Turkey called ‘Palestinian-Israeli Peace: Is Now the Time?’” “Earlier in March, I was invited by the British Foreign Office to participate in a Wilton Park conference on Turkish-EU relations in the United Kingdom. Laura’s work was extremely helpful for that conference which included academics, journalists and government officials from the EU and Turkey.”

It has also taught her to recognize that newspapers from different regions have certain biases; so several views need to be weighed to get accurate data. “I had no understanding of Islam or the Middle East before I came to Emmanuel and now I am working with an expert in the field who has inspired me to continue to focus on the Middle East in graduate school. I have learned that to be wellrespected in this field you must be extremely well-read and educated, and Dr. Martin is giving me that foundation.” “The fact that Emmanuel gives us the opportunity to do faculty-student research is so beneficial to both me and my students. It has given Laura, in particular, a chance to narrow her focus, specialize and delve deeply into something,” said Dr. Martin. “The Middle East is basic to U.S. security and it is very complex. But through this research, Laura truly understands such complicated issues as the relationships between the U.S. and the region, the role of religion in politics, the forces of globalization involved, and the political, economic, and social interactions in the region. And, she understands them very well.”

firmed Erin Fogle’s decision to transfer to the College was the right one. “I love Emmanuel,” she said. “I think it’s the perfect school. It’s a small college in the middle of Boston, which offers students so many opportunities to learn and grow. I could not be happier.” Erin, a member of the class of 2009, has been assisting Assistant Professor of English Dan DeGooyer with an on-going communication study he has been conducting. The project is based on a series of meetings of an academic unit at a large university and Dr. DeGooyer is examining how the team members, through verbal communication, create identities for themselves, and how these identities affect the self-assessment process. Erin’s work has involved transcribing the meeting tapes and meeting twice weekly with Dr. DeGooyer to discuss books and articles on this type of research. “The articles I am reading, which are part of Dr. DeGooyer’s bibliography, have helped me to understand the theories we’re using to analyze the group dynamics,” she said. “In the communication field, I am learning that it’s important to bring in core ideas to give the proper context to a project.” The culmination of the project will be a peer-reviewed article, which will then be submitted to either the annual conferences of the National Communication Association or the International Communication Reflecting on the Power of Association. We have been having important dialogue which has been insightful for me.” Emmanuel professors are able to be both teachers and researchers, and this opportunity has allowed Erin to get a glimpse of that. “This gives more depth to my studies and it has helped me to learn what professors do outside of class and what their main interests are. I think that’s one of the things that is really unique about the college experience, learning that your professors are not just teachers, but they are doing research and continuing to educate themselves in the field.” While Erin is just entering her junior year, she already has her eye on the future and how this research project is preparing her. “I am an English literature major and I eventually want to become a teacher, so this experience is helping me to learn how to communicate more effectively and be able to study more effectively the theories behind the ways people communicate.” Dr. DeGooyer agrees. “A lot of what we’re looking at is about academic discourse and how people talk in an academic institution. Demonstrating intellectual sophistication and presenting it in everyday conversation is so important in the field of teaching.”

Pioneering Scientific Research

------------------------------The Neuro-Immunology Research Project (NIRP) group is truly a revolutionary concept for the College. Not only have a group of 10 students been able to conduct advanced scientific research right on campus, but they have participated in

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). “Our goal at the start of this project was to come up with something that the scientific community would say ‘wow’ about — something that changes our body of research knowledge,” said Dr. Kurtz. He presented some of the preliminary data at the International Congress of Immunology Conference in Brazil this summer. The NIRP group for the 2006–2007 academic year included Forum Raval ’07, who is now pursuing a Ph.D. in immunology at the University of Massachusetts, Patrick Duff, Casey Vallot ’07, who has accepted a position at Merck-Research Laboratories – Boston, Lisa Shubert ’08, Carolyn Ferrick ’08, Kari Davidson ’08, Emily Willmer ’08, Alex Bravoco ’08, Sam LoCascio ’09 and Chris Borges ’10. Patrick, Forum and Casey were the first members of the NIRP group, which was formed in the fall of 2005, and students have been invited over the last two years to join. There is a six-month apprenticeship period in which new students work with experienced students and faculty to learn laboratory techniques. There are regular lab team meetings in which members of the group present scientific literature, share information from experiments and plan for the future. “This is a very driven group,” said Dr. Kurtz. “They are self-motivators who push each other academically. We wanted to do something neither I nor Dr. Williams had

done, which means within a month, some of the students knew more than we did in certain areas of the project.” Lisa Shubert recognizes what this type of experience means for her future. “Being in the science field is very competitive, especially if you want to go to graduate school or medical school. It’s really great to be able to work on a real research project that will be on-going for years — it’s pioneering in the science department. I now know that I want to do research and work in immunology. It has become my passion.” Dr. Williams is looking at ways to solidify this type of research in the future. “Our ultimate goal, as the research project continues, is to publish papers in scholarly journals and to present at more conferences. We are also identifying grants to support the future of the project. In addition to our current anatomical studies, we would like to investigate the behavioral aspects of alterations to the immune functioning of the central nervous system.” He is also looking to the future of his current students. “We want them to utilize this Longwood Medical Area neighborhood, full of world-renowned medical and academic institutions, and do exceptionally well.” “It really is, in the true sense, a mentormentee relationship,” said Dr. Kurtz. “I have so much invested in these students, and they are more vested in the project because we are doing real research that will have an impact. I have come to truly rely on them.” It is safe to say that the experience Chris Borges has had since he attended Dr. Kurtz’s presentation in 2006 has exceeded expectations. He is doing the work he loves and is heading towards a bright future. But he has also gained a support system in his faculty and peers at Emmanuel who helped him cope with his father’s illness. “I have great friends here, and they supported me through a really tough time,” said Chris. “Of everyone, Dr. Kurtz has been the most supportive. He has an opendoor policy. When my father was sick, he would talk me through the science behind the treatments, and, for me, that made all the difference in the world.” S –MOLLY HONAN

building the project from scratch, forming a foundation for research to continue well into the future. Recent graduate Patrick Duff ’07, who is pursuing a career in biotechnology, understands the significance of this. “Not many students are able to help start a research project from the ground floor, from doing literature searches, stocking and setting up the lab, developing a research objective, having lab meetings and collecting preliminary results. I am actually a little bit jealous of the people coming in now because the future for this project is so promising.” A collaborative project between Assistant Professor of Biology Todd Williams, a neurobiologist, and Josef Kurtz, an immunologist, the research involves investigating the interaction between the immune and central nervous systems. This includes studying cells of which little is known about — immune cells that infiltrate the central nervous system (CNS) as well as resident CNS immune microglial cells that become active during trauma. When inflammation occurs following an accident, for example, both CNS resident and infiltrating immune cells aid in its recovery. The students are using two advanced methods to identify these different cell populations — flow cytometry and immunohistochemistry. The eventual findings of this research could have implications for conditions like Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Multiple Sclerosis and

in the state of Virginia, and yet my department probably had the highest morale it had ever had. There was a sense that, despite budget cutbacks elsewhere, we were going great guns. We received a grant to renovate the labs in the chemistry building, and received seed money to purchase large instruments, and that was very satisfying. But, after being a department chair for six years, I felt a desire to go back to my research and to the faculty. My research was focused on the chemistry of drinking water and what happened when disinfectants like chlorine, chloramines or chlorine dioxide were added; how they react with trace organics, such as plant material, in water. I had been very successful in this research, receiving several National Science Foundation grants, publishing articles, and being invited to be on a National Academy of Sciences panel on drinking water. But then, the opportunity to be the Interim Dean of the College of Sciences at Old Dominion arose, and I realized I could use my talents to influence the lives of so many more people than I might be able to in the classroom or the lab. There was a great sense of satisfaction in making it possible for others to do their jobs that much better. It was at that time that I decided to pursue a permanent position as a dean. When I interviewed at Loyola University in New Orleans, I felt right away that it was the place for me. I identified passionately with the mission and the vision of the university,

positive change and expansion, and will be a driving force in furthering the College’s excellence in providing a liberal arts and sciences education. Dr. Scully, along with his wife Mary, a writer and editor, were officially welcomed to the Emmanuel community in March during a reception with members of the faculty, student body, staff and administration. Emmanuel Magazine spent some time with Dr. Scully this summer to talk about his career, what drew him to Emmanuel College and his thoughts on the future. EM: What attracted you to accept this position at Emmanuel? FS: It was the mission and the vision of the College and the Sisters of Notre Dame initially. And, once I came to campus, it was immediately evident that this is a very positive atmosphere to be in, and exceptionally good things are happening. The College is expanding, and there are resources to be able to continue to invest to enhance the educational experience. The Catholic intellectual tradition is also something that I strongly value and to which I feel a connection. This tradition at Emmanuel, as well as the commitment to values-based education, is very important to me. During my visits, I experienced a sense that the College has a strong set of beliefs and was the kind of institution of which I was looking to be a part. I also wanted to be a part of Sister Janet’s vision. Here at Emmanuel, there is also such an understanding of and a commitment to social justice. It is not enough to know what is right and what is wrong, there must be a commitment to act and to serve.

I was impressed with the students I met, and as we talked about some of the things that they value at Emmanuel, they talked about the personal nature of their relationships with faculty, and that the faculty know their names and that they cared about each student as an individual. This applied to interactions on so many levels — research projects, service-learning courses and extracurricular activities.

I also have the goal of helping to strengthen the intellectual and academic profile not just within the city, state and region, but nationally. We are on a roll right now and I want to continue that. I really hope to be able to raise the profile of the amazing accomplishments of faculty and students, locally and nationally. If we can continue to do that, then we will have accomplished a tremendous amount. We will secure Emmanuel College’s future. What distinguished Emmanuel from a number of the other institutions for me, in addition to its strong sense of mission, was that there is a sense that there are big changes and big moves taking place on this campus, and I wanted to be a part of that. a Jesuit institution, and had the opportunity to work very closely with the provost and learn from him. You have to understand that when I became a faculty member, I never intended to go on to be a department chair. And when I was a department chair, I never thought ‘well, this is a building block to become a dean.’ And I never thought of being a dean as the stepping stone to being a vice president. During my career, I have learned from each experience and looked for ways in which I could have the most impact on faculty and students. I began looking for new opportunities in the summer of 2005. I did not feel I had to leave Loyola, but if I found the right place, a place where I could continue making a difference, then I would consider it. Then I began to read about Sister Janet and her vision for Emmanuel College.

Last fall, Emmanuel engaged BigBad, Inc., a New England-based interactive agency, to assess the College’s online communications and present recommendations for a strategic approach to the site’s design. Taking into consideration the many changes that have occurred at Emmanuel in the last several years, the College and BigBad set out with the objective of improving Emmanuel’s Web presence, all the while assembling a site that would comprehensively communicate not only the institution’s academic excellence, but the strong sense of community life both on and off-campus as well. Web Editor Shauna Billings, who manages the site’s content and operation, says the effort required the assistance of many unsung members of the College community. Input from faculty, staff and students through a Web site advisory committee, behind-the-scenes work by the Office of Information Technology, and summer support from a team of student interns, for instance, all played significant roles throughout the development process in order to make the project a success. “This site has truly been a campus-wide effort, and it’s something the entire community can be proud of,” said Billings. “It has been such a great experience to be part of something that really has the support of the entire Emmanuel community, and to help craft what will be the introduction and welcome to Emmanuel College for many people the world over.” Overall, Billings believes the new site will provide an excellent outlet for expressing the special qualities Emmanuel has to offer. “Emmanuel College is a place of personal connections and innovation, and it sits in the center of one of the country’s most sophisticated and exciting cities,” she said. “This is a campus where you get smiles and hellos as you walk between buildings. It was important to show this friendliness through the colors, photos and stories chosen to be displayed on the site. “Emmanuel is still the same as it was when our alumni came to school here: It’s still the friendly, welcoming community that has attracted students for more than 85 years,” she added. “But it’s also a place of discovery and transformation. There’s a lot that’s new to love about Emmanuel.” S

She joined the faculty ranks after graduating from the College’s continuing education program, and as department chair, was praised by Emmanuel College

Marley Joins Emmanuel as Dean of Graduate and Professional Programs This summer, Emmanuel welcomed Judith Cox Marley, Ed.D. as the Dean of Graduate and Professional Programs (GPP). Dr. Marley comes to Emmanuel after serving as the Assistant Dean at Boston University’s Metropolitan College, the continuing education unit of the university, since 2003. Prior to Boston University, she was the Vice President of Academic Affairs at New England College of Finance and also served as a principal and teacher for 15 years in K-12 public schools. She holds an A.B. from Boston College, and an M.Ed. and an Ed.D from the University of Massachusetts. In her new role at Emmanuel, Dr. Marley will provide strategic leadership for all GPP programs; conducting internal program assessment, leading the curricular review

process, examining the marketplace, and developing a vision and framework for partnerships for new and innovative degree and certificate programs. Dr. Marley will also serve as an Associate Professor of Education. “Dr. Marley’s involvement in the community, and her connection to the Sisters of Notre Dame through schooling and the Notre Dame Education Center as a board member, gives her an appreciation of Emmanuel’s mission. Five Emmanuel students spent nearly three weeks in South Africa during the months of May and June as part of a service trip associated with the United Nation's Millennium Development Goals. During the trip, the students traveled to four different service sites to provide aid, including the Ikageng Itireleng AIDS Ministry, a social service organization dedicated to the needs of children orphaned by HIV/AIDS, and Chris Hani Baragwaneth Hospital, the largest hospital in the world which treats more than 2,000 patients per day — nearly half of which are HIV positive. The softball team ended its 2007 with a fine finish, winning three of its last four games during the weekend of April 21st. The Saints swept Daniel Webster College in a GNAC double-header to begin the weekend and finished with a split decision against conference foe Albertus Magnus to improve their record to 7-25. The weekend featured quality outings from the team’s seniors, with catcher Christine Sampson adding three runs on three hits, and classmate Lisa Donehey notching two wins including a five-hit shutout against Daniel Webster. Both Sampson and Donehey were honored during the final weekend for their contributions to the program. The men’s volleyball team captured a North East Collegiate Volleyball Association (NECVA) tournament bid for just the second time in program history this spring. Although the Saints fell to Eastern Mennonite University in the opening round, they wrapped up their season with a 14-11 overall record, the second-best finish in team history. Senior captain and outside hitter John Bluhm graduated as the program’s all-time leader in three categories: kills (1,081), digs (803), and aces (138).

Geraldine Bannon Creedon continues to serve in the Massachusetts House of Representatives as Vice-Chair of Education. Her husband, Robert, is the State Senator. They are the only married couple ever to serve together as elected officials at the State House. Regina Preziosi DeRise has been traveling extensively with her husband the last few years. They have visited such places as Italy, Sicily, China, Machu Picchu and the Amazon rainforest of Peru. Annette C. French is currently enrolled in the Ph.D.-level program at Loyola College, where she intends to receive an M.D. in Pastoral Counseling. This program is the only Ph.D. program in the field, as well as the country. During her studies, she has worked at Fort Belvoir, VA, for two years with all branches of the military and received her Master of Science in pastoral counseling in 2007. She has two successful daughters and has been married for 36 years to her husband, Peter.

Marie McDevitt Biggs wrote in to share that her husband has received a wonderful opportunity to work in Dubai for three months this year. Also, her daughter, Melanie, graduated this spring from Loyola University in Chicago with an M.A. in education. She will be teaching the fifth grade in Wilmette, IL. Eileen Gunn’s short story collection entitled “Stable Strategies and Others,” was published in 2004 by Tachyon Publications. It was short-listed for the Philip K. Dick Award, the James Tiptree, Jr., Award, and the World Fantasy Award. One of the stories in it received the Nebula Award for best short story in 2004. Other stories in the book have been nominated for the Hugo and Nebula awards. The collection has also been recently published in Japan by Hayakawa, and Eileen will be speaking at Keio University in Tokyo later this summer.

After many reincarnations, Rita McColgan Richardson finds herself as a freelance writer and is presently taking courses in writing at University of Massachusetts, Boston. She has most recently been published in “The Herb Quarterly” and hopes to join and publish on the Internet Writers Workshop. Margaret McKenna plans to step down as President of Lesley University in June 2007 after almost 22 years. She plans on being involved in a project on civic engagement, while serving on several boards, and hopes to have some free time. Melvina Najamy Strijdonk is currently retired from school-nursing in Connecticut, and has since moved to Arizona in July of 2006. In Arizona, she has two grandchildren, ages two and four. Susan Aguiar is currently finishing up her master’s program in administration of higher education this August from Suffolk University. In September, she will be heading to Washington, D.C., to take part in an 11-month Sisters of Notre Dame Mission Volunteer AmeriCorps program. As part of the program, she will live with three other volunteers and will work at Mary House, a non-profit organization for low-income, refugee or immigrant families. After the completion of the program, she would like come back to Massachusetts and continue to pursue a career in higher education. Mark Chludzinski was recently published in the Springfield Republican’s May 6, 2007, issue for his work with individuals with disabilities and the Special Olympics. In July 2007, he will be moving to New Zealand for a year and plans to work and travel throughout the country and the South Pacific. Jennifer R. Dunphy recently joined O’Neill and Associates, Boston’s leading government and public relations firm, as account coordinator. She became acquainted with the program through their challenging internship program where she demonstrated her intellect, skills, and work ethic. As account coordinator, Jennifer will have the responsibility of supporting local, state, and federal government relations efforts through conducting regulatory as well as legislative research. Jennifer gained previous political experience through working with Chris Gabrieli during his 2006 race for Governor of Massachusetts. Additionally she worked for State Senator Marc Pacheco, and volunteered for the Kerry-Edwards 2004 presidential campaign. Jennifer currently resides in Brookline, MA.

The total cash received by the College for the 2007 fiscal year amounted to $2,703,920.
