MASTER OF ARTS IN TEACHING
You know why you want to be a teacher. Now learn how to be the best one possible. Becoming the best possible teacher starts by immersing yourself in the kind of program that will challenge and inspire you. Our Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) is designed around the belief that, as a teacher, your goal is to create learning environments and experiences that enable your students to thrive and grow academically, socially and emotionally. As a candidate for the MAT, you will gain the skills and practical experiences needed to ensure academic achievement and success for all of your students. Our graduate program will challenge you to grow and achieve academic and personal success.
If you want to take the next step in your career, you have come to the right place. Small, discussion-based classrooms inspire a more interactive way of learning. With an average class size of 15 students, our discussion and activity-based format provides a vibrant learning environment. Theory and real-world experiences are integrated, building the knowledge and skills needed for success as a teacher. Our program is designed to make graduate study possible and convenient for working adults. Each seven-week class meets just once a week, enabling you to fit academics into your professional and personal schedules. We have rolling admissions and enrollment opportunities multiple times per year, which help to accelerate the completion of your graduate degree. The program is designed to be completed within two years. Our Boston campus is located in the heart of the Longwood Medical and Academic Area, adjacent to some of the most respected health care institutions, for-profit employers and cultural centers in the city. Emmanuel’s proximity to this world-renowned area has allowed the College to form strategic partnerships to enhance the degrees and certificates offered through the Graduate and Professional Programs.
Our graduate program faculty is comprised of experienced and highly respected teachers who share their knowledge and experience with you. When you participate in our MAT program, you work with full-time faculty and successful practitioners who are experts in the field of education and bring their extensive and practical experience to every class. Combining current knowledge and theory, faculty members directly address the needs and realities of today’s schools in ways that go far beyond typical textbook learning.

“Making a career shift at that age – I was 31 years old when I got out – I was terrified. But one of my professors, Dr. Rosemary Tobin, gave me a lot of great advice and guidance. She told me I would be a great teacher and to just do it. She gave me a lot of confidence.” – Nancy Barile, BA ’90, MAT ’93

“In the MAT program at Emmanuel College I found that I was encouraged to think creatively. I have done many projects which mimic the classroom experience. I have found the reflection component of these projects to be beneficial in preparing me to become the best teacher I can be.” – Rachel Williams, MAT ’07 History Teacher, Melrose High School
