Emmanuel College: Building Leadership in Research Administration

The College: In the Heart of the Longwood Medical and Academic Area (LMA)

The Curriculum: A Cutting-Edge Approach

The Format: Supporting Professional Growth

Emmanuel College’s graduate programs in management complement the needs and knowledge of professionals and their employers through the development of specialized academic opportunities. Emmanuel’s goal is to educate highly productive leaders, critical thinkers, contributors to the community and responsive decision makers. Through the skills and networks acquired in this program, students will be able to respond to the specific challenges in the field of sponsored research administration.

Emmanuel’s central location, in the heart of the LMA and adjacent to some of the most respected health care institutions and academic centers in the world, allows the College to form strategic partnerships with leaders in the research field. Our expert instructors call upon their professional research experiences at world-renowned institutions such as Harvard University, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Dartmouth College.

The knowledge and skills gained in the graduate-level research administration curriculum can be immediately applied on the job. Using a case study approach and interactive technology platforms, our instructors cover critical elements of sponsored projects administration, including communication, negotiation, contract management, finance and ethics. Students further their understanding through interaction with a growing network of current and future leaders in the sponsored research field.

The program is offered in a convenient, accelerated, asynchronous format. Courses are delivered in sevenweek sessions. Students complete the six online research administration courses, offered in a cohort model with two starts per year: fall (September) and spring (January). This coursework satisfies the academic requirements needed to earn a Graduate Certificate in Research Administration. The certificate or degree program is also available by request as a summer institute at Emmanuel College or at employer sites.

Research Administration Courses Course I: RAC 9010 Introduction to Research Administration An overview of the complex environment and relationships that support the partnership between the federal government, industry and academic and clinical research institutions. Course II: RAC 9012 Financial Accounting for Sponsored Programs An introduction to fund-based accounting, the standard method utilized by not-for-profit organizations. Students are introduced to budgets, direct and indirect costs, balance sheets and financial analysis. Frequently Asked Questions requirements and other terms and conditions associated with acceptance of research grants. Course V: RAC 9018 Financial Management for Sponsored Programs An introduction to the basics of financial management of sponsored awards including grants, contracts and cooperative agreements. Students gain an understanding of the principles governing cost allocation and cost reimbursement in an academic environment, with emphasis on the distinction between indirect and direct costs and the importance of indirect cost recovery. Course VI: RAC 9020 Contracts Contracts in the context of sponsored programs and research administration are a major function in the “pre-award” process and have the potential to significantly impact “post-award” processes. This course provides a fundamental understanding of contract processes and typical forms, including those used by the federal government.

Why an online program? Online learning allows you to progress through an academic curriculum without changing your professional and personal schedules to accommodate class meeting times. In Blackboard Vista®, the Learning Management System used to deliver online courses, you complete each week’s work at your own pace. You expand your knowledge through collaborative learning with classmates who are sponsored research professionals from varied research settings across the country. How does the course workload compare to traditional classes? The workload is equivalent to a graduate-level face-to-face class. During each 7-week accelerated class, you will have readings and assignments. Instructors will facilitate dialogue on Blackboard Vista® discussion boards and blogs, where you will post your comments and respond to those of your classmates. Blackboard Vista® has an easy-to-use drop-box into which you may submit written assignments. Media clips of guest lectures are another dynamic segment of these courses.

Will my instructor be available for questions or “online office hours?” Yes. Instructors teaching in the online environment recognize the importance of accessibility and communication as they support the online student. Each individual instructor will establish a schedule for responding to questions and consulting personally with students. How is my participation assessed? The frequency and quality of your participation is assessed to measure your progress in the course. Participation in discussions will be one element of your overall grade, which will also reflect your performance on assignments, quizzes and/or other interactive learning activities. Your instructor for each course will explain the grading criteria. How do I know if an online program is right for me? Online courses are not for everyone. However, if you are motivated to work towards deadlines without the structure of weekly class meetings, and if you are competent with basic computer skills, the online format will expand your academic experience. 5/27/09 3:30:00 PM
