ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT | 400 THE FENWAY | BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS 02115
JANUARY 2013
From Players to Coaches Since Emmanuel’s transition to co-educational in 2001, the College’s Athletic Department has more than tripled in size, going from five varsity sports in 2000 to 17 varsity programs in 2012. Over the past decade, Emmanuel has graduated hundreds of male and female student-athletes. Post college graduation, many of these former Emmanuel athletes have returned to their routes, opting to give back to the sports they love so much. With their NCAA Division III playing experience under their belts, many Saints alums are taking their athletic careers to another level, choosing to remain in the game, this time with a spot on the sidelines. As we begin a new year, we’ve chosen to take a look back at some of the Emmanuel alums, who are now in the coaching ranks. Here is a not-so-short, yet surely incomplete, list of Emmanuel College graduates over the past ten years, who are taking their shot at coaching at a variety of different levels. Several of our athletic alums have returned to the Fenway and are still wearing the Blue & Gold, acquiring positions on the Saints’ coaching staffs. Seven Emmanuel grads are back on campus and currently working with the Saints, including Dan Campagna (’07) – Assistant Sports Information Director, Tyson Rietz (’11) – Assistant Men’s Volleyball Coach, Irene Limlengco (’11) – Assistant Men’s and Women’s Track & Field Coach, Rob Allen (’08) - Assistant Men’s and Women’s Track & Field Coach, Mark DaCruz (’08) – Assistant Men’s Soccer
Coach, Levi Smith (’08) – Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach and Lauren Daniel (’11) – Head Coach of the Saints Dance Team. In addition to these seven, the Saints have also had several alums, who came back after commencement and previously coached at Emmanuel. Those past Emmanuel athletes and then coaches include Amy Miklus (’07) – Assistant Women’s Volleyball Coach, Serghino Rene (’05) – Assistant Cross Country and Track & Field Coach, Albert Hayle (’05) – Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach and Laureyn Furtney (’09) – Assistant Women’s Soccer Coach. Four former Emmanuel Softball Players also returned post-graduation to coach the Saints, including Sarah PalmerThompson (’11), Danielle Andruskiwec (’10), Stephanie Rege (’08) and Katie Foley (’04). Five recent Emmanuel Men’s Soccer alums are now coaching. In addition to DaCruz, who coaches the Emmanuel men, Dan Campagna also serves as an assistant coach for the UMass Boston Women’s Soccer Team. DaCruz and Campagna’s teammate Henry Baptista (’07) works at Waltham High School as the head junior varsity and assistant varsity boys soccer coach. Mat Koenemann (’12) left Almuni that are currently working or coaching for the Saints include Dan Campagna (‘07), Levi Smith (‘08), Mark DaCruz (‘08), Rob Allen (‘08), Irene Limlengco (‘11) and Tyson Reitz (‘11).
