• Master of Education in School Administration • Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study in Educational Leadership
If you believe in the power of education, this is your place. You are already committed to making a difference in the lives of young people. As you look to deepen that dedication, consider participating in a learning community led by successful practitioners in the field of education. Our Master of Education in School Administration (M.Ed.) program prepares candidates for initial licensure as elementary and secondary school principals. Students who already hold a master’s degree follow the same curriculum to earn a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study in Educational Leadership (CAGS), also in preparation for initial licensure as elementary and secondary school principals. The program is designed to promote engagement and interaction among participants and instructors. You’ll enhance your knowledge and build your skills as an effective, successful and visionary school leader.
Creating the best possible learning environment for your students starts with immersing yourself in the right one for you. Small, discussion-based classrooms inspire a more interactive way of learning. Our discussion and activity-based format, with an average class size of 15 students, ensures a vibrant and engaging learning environment. Theory and real-world experiences are integrated, building the knowledge and skills needed for success as a school leader. Field-based experiences provide opportunities to observe and learn from effective and successful school principals. Programs are designed to make graduate study possible and convenient for working adults. Each seven-week class meets just once a week, enabling you to fit academics into your professional and personal schedules. The programs are designed to be completed within two years. We have rolling admissions and enrollment opportunities multiple times per year, which help to accelerate the completion of your graduate degree or certificate. Our Boston campus is located in the heart of the Longwood Medical and Academic Area, adjacent to some of the most respected health care institutions, for-profit employers and cultural centers in the city. Emmanuel’s proximity to this world-renowned area has allowed the College to form strategic partnerships to enhance the degrees and certificates offered through the Graduate and Professional Programs.
Our graduate program faculty is comprised of experienced and highly respected teachers who share their knowledge and experience with you. When you participate in our graduate program in school administration, you work with full-time faculty and successful practitioners who are experts in the field of education, and who bring their extensive and practical experience to every class. Combining current knowledge and theory, faculty members directly address the ever-changing needs of today’s schools in ways that go far beyond typical textbook learning. This kind of learning experience is unique to a small, personalized program serving working professionals.
The Emmanuel Difference Emmanuel College is where potential meets career growth and real-world possibility. Our principles of education are rooted in ethical values and social responsibility – we develop educational leaders who make a difference in the world. With our decades-long tradition of values-based education, we empower you to become the educational professional you strive to be: a leader capable of making a positive impact on the schools and the students you serve.
Graduate Programs in School Administration • Master of Education in School Administration (M.Ed.) • Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study in Educational Leadership (CAGS) The graduate program in school administration prepares educators for an initial license as a school principal/assistant school principal at the elementary (Pre-K– 6), middle (5–8) or high school (9–12) level. Course offerings blend a strong theoretical base with the skills and knowledge required of practitioners. Core courses address the Professional Standards for Administrators issued by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.
PROGRAM DESIGN A total of 36 credit hours are required for the program. Students complete 10 threecredit graduate courses focusing on instructional leadership, educational foundations, legal issues, fiscal and personnel management and community relations. A six-credit practicum/internship is required. Students should consult with their advisors regarding specific requirements for licensure based on their experience and status. Candidates must pass the Communication and Literacy Skills portion of the Massachusetts Tests for Educator Licensure (MTEL) prior to acceptance into the administrative practicum.
“I follow the sentiment of St. Julie Billiart, founder of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur, who believed in ‘educating for life.’ In my Technology Integration for Educators course, I make sure graduate students, both those in leadership positions or classroom teachers, retool themselves for the 21st century.” – Sr. Karen Hokanson, SND, Ed.D. Assistant Professor of Education
In order to assist students in preparing for the Communication and Literacy Skills test, we provide test preparation sessions free of charge to our students. The sessions, designed to prepare students for the November or March MTEL, are offered for six consecutive weeks prior to each exam.

“One of the most valuable aspects of my Emmanuel learning experience was the collaboration with my classmates: other public and private school administrators and teachers. Class discussions were always relevant and often immediately applicable.” – Dr. James Keane, M.Ed. ’08 Vice Principal, Catholic Memorial School
