The courses meet for six two-hour sessions providing 18 Professional Development Points. All courses require a $40.00 registration fee payable to Emmanuel College. All course materials are provided through the Institute.

Assessing for the Common Core: Standards for Grades K-8

Instructor: Corinne Merritt

This workshop will introduce the new Common Core Standards for English and Math for grades k-8 and explore various formative assessment strategies used to evaluate student learning as required by these standards. Participants will be encouraged to incorporate curriculum and classroom practices currently used at their schools. Supporting English Language Learners’ Literacy Development

Instructor: Dr. Christine Leighton

This workshop will focus on ways to support the literacy development of English language learners in grades 1-6. We will focus on key factors that influence second language acquisition and the implications of these factors for instruction in speaking, listening, reading, and writing. We will discuss instructional considerations for and effective practices to implement with beginning, intermediate, and advanced English language learners. Teaching English Language Learners at the Middle and High School Level

This workshop will focus on ways to support the language and literacy development of English language learners in content courses at the middle and high school level. We will discuss the linguistic and cultural factors that influence second language acquisition, learn methods to promote the speaking, listening, reading and writing of English language learners at different proficiency levels and consider when and how to provide modifications and accommodations in instruction and assessment.
