Installation view of Francis Alÿs (in collaboration with Julien Devaux and Ajmal Maiwandi), Reel-Unreel (2011) in All There Is Left at the Adam Art Gallery, 2013. Single channel video projection, 19:28min, color, sound. Photo: Shaun Waugh. Image courtesy of the artist and Adam Art Gallery.
Francis Alÿs at the Adam Art Gallery Belgian artist Francis Alÿs’ REEL – UNREEL is currently being screened as part of Adam Art Gallery’s exhibition All There Is Left. Originally commissioned for dOCUMENTA (13) and shot in Kabul, the 20-minute film documents the literal unravelling and handling of the nation’s visual culture, as reels of film are examined, handled and transformed into props for
children playing on the city streets. A narrative at the end of the film informs the viewer of the Taliban’s raiding of the Afghanistan National Film Archive in 2001 and how, unbeknown to the militia, the works destroyed were only copies – the original reels were ultimately preserved. This strikes a powerful narrative exulting the preserved existence and tangibility of
this aspect of the nation’s visual culture for future generations. The film is being showcased alongside works by Lieko Shiga and Christchurch-based Paul Johns – the latter two exploring this same notion of image posterity in the post-earthquake landscapes of Japan and Christchurch respectively – and will be on view at the gallery until 29 September.
Modernist survey Porous Moonlight opened at Papakura Art Gallery on 7 September. Curated by Imogen Taylor, the show comprises a fine selection of modernist painting from New Zealand and Australian practitioners including Frances Hodgkins, Saskia Leek, Stella Corkery, Diena Georgetti and Michael Illingworth. In constructing the show, Taylor has not favoured the abstract or figurative but, rather, in a curatorial spirit which arguably belies something of her own artistic identity, has sought to draw attention to the complexities of the painterly decision-making process which shaped convergences in modern art. Highlights include

Saskia Leek’s delicately executed Fruit Subjects and a sublimely fragmented Claudia Jowitt canvas. As suggested by the show’s poetically evocative title, Porous Moonlight, the materiality of paint and the humane nature of the painted surface are foremost in Taylor’s curatorial concerns. Pornography in the Public Eye Last month in Auckland, fringe art campaign The Porn Project engaged over 50 artists and a number of art spaces and shop fronts on K Road in a project which sought to encourage inclusive and critical dialogue on the representation and consumption of pornography. The campaign, which was co-curated by Rachel Jane Liebert and Amelia Hitchcock, presented an intersectional forum for the exploration and celebration of diverse sexuality, desire and erotica within a genre where racial and gender-based inequalities have previously been overlooked due to the taboo nature of mainstream pornography. The project was associated with The University of Auckland’s research and public engagement programme Pornography in the Public Eye, which also includes an exhibition of 20 New Zealand artists at Gus Fisher Gallery, A Different View. The exhibition, featuring works by standout New Zealand contemporary practitioners including Shigeyuki Kihara, Sam Mitchell, Richard McWhannell, Liz Maw, Reuben Paterson and Rohan Wealleans, compellingly explores the ethics of representation within the genre, and challenges the predominance of the heteronormative gaze. The show will be on view at Gus Fisher Gallery until 12 October. When 23 Aug - 12 Oct 2013 Where Gus Fisher Gallery 74 Shortland St Auckland

Jae Hoon Lee, Wallace Arts Award Jae Hoon Lee has been named as the recipient of the 2013 Wallace Arts Trust Paramount Award. Lee, who leads a self-described ‘nomadic existence’, is represented across a number of significant public and private collections in New Zealand and has been exhibiting here for over a decade. His work draws on the richness of his travels and time spent living in Korea, America and
New Zealand. In assimilating source images through this cultural wandering, Lee’s subject matter breathes the diversity of a multicultural perspective, and his work literally reflects this as he uses a photo collage technique which pinpoints his own bodily existence within a unique time and space. Lee’s mastery of his technique was
beautifully captured in his 2012 solo exhibition at Starkwhite, Antarctic Fever. Before completing his MFA and Doctorate of Fine Art at Elam, Lee completed a BFA at the San Francisco Art Institute. He will presently return to America to undertake a six-month residency at the International Studio & Curatorial Program in New York.

Christchurch Art Gallery recently announced the launch of a fundraising campaign to support the purchase of Michael Parekowhai’s monumental On First Looking Into Chapman’s Homer. Commissioned for New Zealand’s pavilion at the 2011 Venice Biennale, the magnificent work draws on John Keats’ poem of the same title to visualise an allegory teetering between the old and new worlds; it is not difficult to imagine the extent to which the potent and poignant symbolism of this 1.7-tonne heroic bronze would have been felt when, upon its return to New Zealand last year, it was installed in a scene of rubble and debris in central Christchurch. The work will be a permanent fixture in the redeveloped forecourt

Michael Stevenson, Proof of the Devil
Michael Stevenson, Proof of the Devil installation view. Image courtesy of the artist and Michael Lett, Auckland.
Michael Stevenson’s show at Michael Lett, Proof of the Devil, is the first exhibition that the Berlin-based artist has staged in New Zealand in over a decade. The show offers insight into a very structured and specific engagement on Stevenson’s part: the notion of ‘the legal requirement to achieve an impossible proof’. Brilliantly, this is conceptually based on the form of a defiant swing door in the department of mathematics at the University of Panama. An awareness of the implications of this problematic structure and the general concept of ‘probatio diabolica’ informs the viewing experience. To an extent; however, the overall impression left is that understanding the mathematical/ philosophical complexities of Stevenson’s theory is not inherent in an appreciation of his work. Rather, the essence of his practice lies in the manifestation of a physical relationship with objects which are formally independent and significant.
Tahi Moore, Something, 2013 (digital still). Image courtesy of the artists and Art Space
In Stevenson’s own words, “my work
is really dedicated to working with materials in a very straightforward, very primal way. My hope is to make objects that have some kind of magic...”. The exhibition’s use of utalitarian objects encourages viewers to form a physical relationship with the objects.

natural surroundings. As ever, this has been executed on Moore’s part with a poetic beauty and touch of irony (think
“Micheal [sic] Caine explaining on youtube how not to look at the camera and therefore be a good and believable actor”). In the artist’s own words, the objective of the work is to examine a “closed narrative that needs to break open”. This will be Moore’s first solo exhibition of 2013.

FOCUS: SYDNEY CONTEMPORARY ART FAIR 19 - 22 September 2013, Carriageworks, Sydney The inaugural Sydney Contemporary art fair will be launched this September at the city’s Carriageworks arts centre in Eveleigh. With a number of prominent New Zealand galleries from Wellington and Auckland exhibiting, the fair will present a valuable opportunity for New Zealand’s leading contemporary artists to be showcased as part of a more internationally focused climate than has previously been facilitated within the sphere of Australasian art fairs. Sydney Contemporary was created by Tim Etchells, founder of Art Fairs Australia and co-founder of Art HK. Etchells’ success in the management of Art HK and the recently launched Art13 London bodes well for the debut of Sydney Contemporary. Previously, the largest player in the Australasian art fair market was the Melbourne Art Fair (which Etchells will manage and operate from 2014); however, the ethos and scope of the Melbourne Art Fair thus far has been undoubtedly more insular, with forays into international engagement only ever resulting in a

sporadic selection of overseas dealer representation at the fairs. Sydney Contemporary, on the other hand, boasts firm participation from the international – and particularly the Asian – market. Of the 70 galleries exhibiting at the fair, 23 are from overseas. Alongside eight New Zealand galleries, five prominent Chinese galleries and a notably strong representation of seven South-east Asian galleries will be showcased at the fair. It is evident, therefore, that the future value of Sydney Contemporary will be not only the extent to which it will be able to attract attention from collectors operating within this international market, but also in its ability to establish stronger ties between Australasia and the burgeoning Asian market. As the largest gathering of international galleries to have ever been held in Sydney, the fair has the potential to play a significant role in shaping the future dynamics of the Asia-Pacific art market.
This is, therefore, a particularly exciting time for such a strong contingent from New Zealand to be involved at the launch of the fair. The following selection of galleries constitutes our national contingent: Bartley and Company Art, Wellington Bath Street Gallery, Auckland Gow Langsford Gallery, Auckland Hopkinson Mossman, Auckland Ivan Anthony, Auckland Michael Lett, Auckland Robert Heald Gallery, Wellington Starkwhite, Auckland Although many of the artists who will be showcased by these galleries already enjoy a well-respected reputation overseas and have firmly established markets in Australasia, participation in Sydney Contemporary will go a long way towards further enhancing their proliferation on the international market. The fair will be held from 19 to 22 September 2013 in Sydney’s heritage Carriageworks building.

A Report on the August Important Paintings & Contemporary Art Auction 16
CATALOGUE 362
WEBB’S
Webb’s August sale of Important Paintings & Contemporary Art achieved a total in excess of $2.1 million. The exceptional standard of works presented and record-breaking prices set at the auction confirmed Webb’s stronghold at the upper tier of the New Zealand art market.
The results of this auction, which saw an average sale price of $39,185 realised per work, are a reflection of the confidence that has been invested in Webb’s as leader of the New Zealand art market. In the build-up to the sale, this was demonstrated in the substantial breadth of the sale’s offerings – the catalogue comprised a comprehensive selection of high-calibre contemporary, historical and modern works of key importance to New Zealand’s art history. In review, this excellence is clearly affirmed by the prices achieved at the auction. The top-performing lot on the evening was an exceptional portrait by Charles Frederick Goldie: Memories, Wiripine Ninia, a Ngati Awa Chieftainess. The work was in pristine condition and it represents the peak of the artist’s technical prowess; it was, therefore, a pleasure to present it to the market. The strong price of $240,000 that it achieved is indicative of the firm and sustained market demand for iconic works of historical importance from masters such as Goldie. Casting a more contemporary eye to the canon of New Zealand art, demand for the magnificent emerald-green Zoomorphic Lounge by Bill Hammond, which belongs to his critically acclaimed late-1990s period, was very high and yielded the second-highest price of the evening. Not since 2009 had a painting from this celebrated period of Hammond’s career been offered. Another standout work was Michael Smither’s monumental Portrait of Sarah, which garnered significant interest from the market and achieved a final sale price of $120,000. In both its scale and resolve, this was one of the most significant works from Smither’s seminal Domestic series to have ever been offered at auction. A number of artist records achieved on the night contributed to a keen competitive atmosphere in the saleroom. In generating results for vendors that surpassed the price points previously set by the secondary market, Webb’s once again demonstrated our specialism in recognising and nurturing key areas of market growth – particularly in the case of the contemporary art market. The sale of Liz Maw’s large-scale cerulean goddess, Aura, which achieved

$48,000, well exceeded the previous record price for her work at auction of $29,000 (by 188%). Moreover, Rohan Weallean’s Grey Lynn Boogie Woogie, a tantalising monochromatic geographic portrait paying homage to Mondrian’s Broadway Boogie Woogie, achieved $17,000, also a record price for the artist. Further strengthening the contemporary contingent of the sale, the excellent Elmer Keith bird portrait which is now so iconically identifiable within Michael Parekowhai’s practice achieved a price of $16,000. These prices affirm that there is strong demand driving the market for works by outstanding New Zealand contemporary practitioners. The ongoing strength of the market for exceptional works from major modernist artists was also clearly reflected in saleroom activity. Landscape with a Road by Colin McCahon, an exceptional work from the Curnow collection, achieved the staggering hammer price of $100,00. Painted in 1965 and presenting a stark hillside and lonely road, this work conveys McCahon at his very essence.

Finally, a record-breaking price was achieved for Russell Clark’s sculptural practice. His majestic limestone sculpture of a Tuhoe woman sold for $40,000.
Charles Tole - Port Moles, achieved $18,000
Considering areas of growth in the New Zealand art market, it is interesting to note that works by important early modernists, which have traditionally received a less-resolved response from the market, are also currently experiencing an upwards trend in value development. On the night of the sale, this was manifested in the prices achieved for works by artists such as the Tole brothers and John Weeks, affirming that these early modern masters are coming to hold their own in the market. A record price was set for the work of John Tole, with a fine painting entitled At Piha selling for $11,000. Another highlight was the sale of Charles Tole’s Port Moles, which achieved $18,000.

A Report on the August Auction of Fine Jewellery & Watches 20
CATALOGUE 362
WEBB’S
The Webb’s Fine Jewellery & Watches sale held on 10 - 11 August 2013 was a record in the history of Webb’s Jewellery department and the first by the newly formed Webb’s team of jewellery specialists.
It’s hard to escape the superlatives surrounding diamonds. They’re the hardest things known and the best conductors of heat, and ‘enchantment’ seems to be as much a part of a diamond’s make-up as are the invisible bonds between its atoms. With their description alone setting them apart from anything else on the planet, diamonds represent just one of the groups of items that elucidate the excitement and pleasure that inevitably follows one of our Fine Jewellery sales. The Webb’s Fine Jewellery & Watches sale held on 10 August 2013 was a record in the history of Webb’s Jewellery department and the first by the newly formed Webb’s team of jewellery specialists comprising Zora Bell Boyd and Anna Carr working alongside longtime Webb’s specialist Peter Downey. Extensive marketing activities and media coverage supported all vendors’ products resulting in the Webb’s August 2013 Fine Jewellery sale achieving a total of $800,193 (hammer price plus buyer’s premium and gst). Traversing a broad selection of fine jewellery with a period range that arched from 1850 through 1950 to the current and contemporary, the Webb’s Fine Jewellery & Watches sale drew an interest from buyers and collectors that allowed only standing capacity in the salerooms. One of the sale highlights, in terms of both price and viewing, was an impressive 5ct cushion-cut loose diamond that fetched a price of $205,187. The diamond of colour E/F and clarity VS1 achieved Webb’s highest recorded price for a loose stone. Refinements to cushion-cut diamonds over time, partially based on cut research initiated by Marcel Tolkowsky in the 1920s, have led to a resurgence in their popularity. Traditional cushioncut diamonds return light in a chunkier pattern than do modern cuts thanks to the enlarged culet of the cushioncut diamond; this is a look prized amongst antique diamond dealers. This interest affirms increasing market discernment for more classical and/or traditional cuts; this is encouragement for consignors considering the sale of antique diamonds.
Zora Bell Boyd Webb’s Jewellery Specialist
The popularity of diamond and dress rings was noted as a highlight of the sale with a beautiful handmade platinum ring with tall, tapered, claw-set diamond baguettes and a central diamond of three carats achieving $27,600. Outside of diamonds, international trends illustrate a growing interest from collectors in watches with timepieces becoming a highly collectable, luxury investment commodity. The opening of an independent watchmakers’ exhibition at Harrods in London just over a month ago (currently running until October) proposed to do something no other Western retail department had tried – showcase a selection of timepieces from highly individual, small-production watchmakers alongside its usual array of top luxury brands. Increased focus from collectors towards the watch market was marked across this section of the sale and particularly in the sale of an 18ct yellow gold Rolex submariner wristwatch that reached $10,200. The response to the new design of the jewellery catalogue has been phenomenal. The objective behind the new look was to create an easier-to-use catalogue paired with stunning visuals. Webb’s enlisted the work of one of New Zealand’s best product photographers and the pieces were professionally shot in-studio so we were able to present this collection pictorially and with great beauty. With an emphasis on informative content and a layout that allowed for each description to be placed on the same page as was the image of the relevant piece, we were able to accomplish our design incentives and offer a professional catalogue that was well worth reading. Copies can be obtained from Webb’s and the images for the collection can be viewed on our website www.webbs.co.nz Entries are now invited for the next auction in this category to be held in November.

Contemporary Practice
for 2013 presents a
Our A2 sales have traditionally been a highly effective forum for the marketing of New Zealand artworks made within the last 10 years and our previous sale, held in May, broke new ground with a record price achieved for a piece from Dienna Georgetti’s practice and strong results achieved for works by Sam Mitchell, Jason Greig, Fiona Pardington, Peter Stichbury, Judy Millar and Bill Hammond.
comprehensive offering of contemporary, modern and historical artworks that hold values of between $1,000 and $20,000. Following a buoyant year, which saw the average sale price in this category sit 20% above the median reserve, this catalogue is the most substantial of its kind to be presented to the market this year.
Extending this recent success, this sale presents a number of works by artists who are currently practising. Of these works, the highlights include two superb works by Sam Mitchell, each representing a distinct period in the artist’s practice. The first, entitled Black King, was made in 2006 and depicts Michael Jackson as a child. The work reflects on the role that childhood experiences play in human development and is a superlative example of the artist’s tattoo-laden portraiture. The sale presents four works by Rohan Wealleans, each from a different period. The first lot of the sale is an untitled work from the artist’s Horrogami series, which saw the artist apply his trademark carved-paint forms to found comic-book covers. Another work – Made in Taiwan: Large 3D Aboriginal Painting Model No. 4 – was made during the artist’s residency in Taiwan in 2004. The sale also includes a rare, early example entitled Spring; dated 2002, the work is one of the artist’s pioneering forays into the use of carved paint. Additionally, the sale includes two works by Regan Gentry, an artist whose practice has not previously been offered in an auction setting. Well known for his public sculptures and large-scale institutional projects, the artist approached his concerns on a more poetic level in the two objectbased works in this sale. A Bone to Pick IV was first exhibited in the artist’s 2009 solo show Try This at Home and #8 Bomb 1 was a highlight from the artist’s 2012 exhibition, The Floating.

The Conquering Lion is from the artist’s seminal late-1970s’ period. The lion was a central motif to the artist’s practice during this time, as emphasised by the title of the exhibition in which this painting was originally exhibited: Putting it all on the Lion.

the fact that the work was made with gouache, a strongly pigmented, watersoluble medium, and an absorbent medium lends it a lighter, moreexpressive quality than that of the works that were its forebears. The sale also includes superb pastel drawings by Peter Siddell, both of which are examples of his iconic, idealised depictions of suburban Auckland. These two works complement the inclusion of a refined, medium-format oil painting entitled Mt Eden. Graphics from New Zealand’s Modern Period Lot 83, Don Driver - Pouch, Estimate $8,000-$12,000
Works on Paper by Modern Masters The sale includes a number of significant, superbly realised, largeformat works on paper by historically significant practitioners from New Zealand’s modern period. Robin White’s At the Bay, Portobello belongs to a small, rarefied selection of wellresolved works on paper – one of the first to have ever been made available to the auction market. Depicting the Otago landscape, this work is an excellent example of White’s brand of unique, crisp-edged, delicately graded regionalism. Philip Clairmont’s untitled work depicting the armchair that was a

ubiquitous subject of his practice is undoubtedly one of the finest works on paper by the artist ever to have been sold at auction. The work was painted while the artist was in his final years and its execution is typical of his moreexperimental early-1980s’ practice. In addition to its gestural approach, the work utilised unconventional new materials and techniques such as bursts of spray-paint. Ralph Hotere’s Working Drawing for Auckland Medical School is an expertly crafted work from 1975. The work takes its format from the artist’s minimalist, Barnett Newman-influenced lacquer paintings of the early 1970s. However,
Quality examples of prints and graphic editions from cornerstone New Zealand modernists are relatively rare and, accordingly, only a few instances of such works are generally offered in each sale. This sale is somewhat unique in that it includes an exceptionally comprehensive selection of editioned works from New Zealand’s modern period, including five examples from Colin McCahon, five examples by Pat Hanly, four examples by Ralph Hotere, three examples by Don Binney, two examples by Robin White and one very fine woodcut, entitled Sink, by Philip Clairmont. Highlights from this selection include a rare lithograph by Colin McCahon entitled Letter to Emile Bernard, which

quotes from John Caselberg’s poem of the same name. This edition has only ever been offered at auction once before. Swoop of the Kotare by Don Binney is also included. Recent demand for graphics by Don Binney has been high and as this is a superlative example in that it is large scale, strongly coloured and features a flying native bird over a smooth, rolling landscape, it is expected to be well received. In addition to the comprehensive selection from heavyweight modernists, the sale includes a substantial suite of works from mid-century printmakers Eileen Mayo and E. Mervyn Taylor. Within this body of works, there are a number of scarce, highly soughtafter examples. A Significant Private Collection This sale introduces the first selection of works from a significant singlevendor collection that Webb’s will be presenting to the market over its next three sales. Spanning from turn-of-century historical practice, to modernist masterpieces, to a significant holding of works by current contemporary practitioners, this collection reflects every facet of New Zealand’s cultural history. Further, consisting of over 500 individual works, this is one of the largest private New Zealand collections in existence.
Lot 71, Dick Frizzell - The Conquering Lion, Estimate $10,000-$15,000
Among the works from the collection included in this sale are examples by Ann Shelton, Peter Peryer, Marti Friedlander, Ans Westra, Elizabeth Thomson, Peter Peryer, Richard Lewer, Louise Henderson, Colin McCahon, Don Binney, John Weeks, Philip Clairmont, Terry Stringer, Nigel Brown, Patrick Reynolds, Dick Frizzell, Richard McWhannell, Garth Tapper, Jeffrey Harris, Philip Trusttum, Martin Ball, Ian Scott and Dave McCracken. Our next sale of Important Paintings & Contemporary Art, to be held in November, will include further works from the collection. Highlights include a landmark painting from Michael Smither’s seminal Domestic series entitled Elizabeth with Sarah and Joseph, a work on canvas by Allen Maddox dated 1987 (critically, the
artist’s works from 1986 and 1987 are well regarded), and a very fine, untitled pencil drawing by Tony Fomison which depicts its subject grasping a log in his arms.

Photography
WEBB’S
A particularly notable component of this sale is its well-referenced selection of New Zealand photography. The photographic works included reflect the breadth of photography’s use as an artistic medium in New Zealand and, to this end, the sale includes major examples from the 1970s and 1980s as well as works by leading contemporary photographers. The selection of contemporary photography includes Floros by Richard Orjis; this is perhaps the artist’s most well-known image. Created in 2006, the work uses digital collaging to conjure an image of a man who is part orchid and part human. Floros examines the relationship between human life and the natural world; it touches upon man’s domination over, objectification of and ultimate reliance on flora for his vital lifeblood.
Two of Yvonne Todd’s highly accomplished still lifes are also included in the sale. Homage to Dr Spackman looks at a new age of sexual liberation ushered in by the proliferation of performance-enhancing drugs. Artificial Telephone (illustrated cover) acts as a counterpart to the artist’s female portraits, examining the influence of the male gaze on the history of aesthetic production. In addition to these works, the sale includes contemporary photographs by Ben Cauchi, Gavin Hipkins, Wayne Barrar, Paul Hartigan, Ian Macdonald and Patrick Reynolds. From the 1970s and 1980s, the sale includes photographs by Marti Friedlander, Ans Westra, Peter Peryer and Brian Brake. Peter Peryer’s Journey to Wellington is one of the artist’s most well-known images from his 1970s’ period and was featured on the cover of PhotoForum magazine the year after it was produced, 1976 (illustrated below). Taken using a Diana camera, the image has been imbued with an almost dream-like quality by the device’s tendency to produce photographs each of which has a soft focus around its periphery. The photograph is accompanied by two other accomplished images, Wind at Whenuapai (1998) and Christopher H., Kerikeri Inlet (1993), from later in the artist’s career.
Notably, the sale includes an image from Ans Westra’s seminal series of photographs taken in 1963 entitled Washday at the Pa. Executed in a delicately balanced greyscale, the series documented a single day in the life of a rural Maori community. Originally intended to be published as a children’s book for New Zealand schools, the book was twice recalled and later published by Caxton Press (Christchurch) in 1965. The series of photographs is one of the most important photo essays ever produced in New Zealand.
Lot 11, Ans Westra - Untitled (From Washday at the Pa Series), Estimate $2,000-$3,000
As the title suggests, Ann Shelton’s Frederick B. Butler Collection, Puke Ariki, New Plymouth # 6, belongs to a series of works which documents the now-deceased Fred Butler’s collection of wallpaper-covered scrapbooks containing newspaper clippings of articles that were relevant to New Plymouth’s history. Like much of his photographic practice, Richard Maloy’s Purple documents a simple performative act. Presenting an image of the artist wearing a plastic bag over his head, which is accompanied by a title that draws attention to the bag’s physical properties, the work questions the validity of abstract painting with purely formal aspirations.

245 Alfred Sharpe View from Burnt Ridge, Merewether graphite and watercolour on paper title inscribed, signed and dated 1907 420mm x 320mm NOTE This is a fine and exceptionally vivid work by a master of nineteenthcentury landscape painting, Alfred Sharpe. The work was executed during the artist’s mature period in Newcastle, Australia. Estimate $4,000 - $7,000 246 Petrus van der Velden Double Blank oil on canvas signed 700mm x 930mm PROVENANCE Double Blank is a painting from van der Velden’s series of Marken subjects, first painted during the 1870s under the influence of Josef Israels. The subject is identical to another paintings of the same subject referenced in the catalogue raisonne on the artist’s work, catalogue no. 1.2.2.22. The paintings are virtually identical although this work is smaller than the work illustrated in the catalogue and differently signed. The painting exhibits all the traits of van der Velden in the 1870s both in terms of facial characteristics of the two principal figures, and in the choice of palette and paint application. The signature is of a type frequently encountered in works from the mid and late 70s. I am satisfied that the painting Double Blank is a second version of 1.2.2.22 in my book and is an original work by Petrus van der Velden’. Extract from a letter of authenticity by Dr T. L. Rodney Wilson, (author of Petrus van der velden (1837 - 1913) A Catalogue Raisonne, 1979) published when acquired by the current owner, affixed verso. Estimate $12,000 - $15,000

I. Title and right of disposal of the goods shall not pass to the purchaser until payment has been made in full by cleared funds. Where any lot purchased is held by Webb’s pending i. clearance of funds by the purchaser or ii. completion of payment after receipt of a deposit, the lot will be held by Webb’s as bailee for the vendor, risk and title passing to the purchaser immediately upon notification of clearance of funds or upon completion of purchase. Bidders deemed Principals. All bidders shall be held personally and solely liable for all obligations arising from any bid, including both ‘telephone’ and ‘absentee’ bids. Any person wishing to bid as agent for a third party must obtain written authority to do so from Webb’s prior to bidding. 12. ‘Subject Bids’. Where the highest bid is below the reserve and the auctioneer declares a sale to be ‘subject to vendor’s consent’ or words to that effect, the highest bid remains binding upon the bidder until the vendor accepts or rejects it. If the bid is accepted there is a contractual obligation upon the bidder to pay for the lot. 13. Sales post-auction or by Treaty. The above conditions shall apply to all buyers of goods from Webb’s irrespective of the circumstances under which the sale is negotiated. 14. Condition of Items. Condition of items is not detailed in this catalogue. Buyers must satisfy themselves as to the condition of lots they bid on and should refer to clause six. A2 Art
THE LAST WORD
RAchel Kleinsman
Fine Arts Specialist The winter months have been actionpacked for the Fine Art Department at Webb’s. Our blockbuster August auction of Important Paintings and Contemporary Art saw an exceptional selection of museum-quality works go under the hammer and achieve recordbreaking prices, whilst this month’s quality A2 sale is the largest A2 offering to have been presented to the market in recent years. Specialist Rachel Kleinsman returned from the UK three months ago to hit the ground running as the department’s newest member. In working to assist all aspects of the auction process from pre-consignment to post-sale, a large part of Rachel’s day to day job at Webb’s involves

liaising with clients to provide market advice, appraisals, and oversee the consignment process. She is always happy to meet with clients who would like to discuss their works of art, or gain an idea of market value and suitability for auction. An avid art historian with a particular specialisation in the field of historical works of art, the other significant component of Rachel’s work at Webb’s is as a researcher and writer. In the lead-up to sales, much of her time is devoted to researching works of art, writing essays and assisting catalogue production. Following the completion of a BA majoring in Art History and Modern Languages (Victoria University of
Wellington), Rachel moved to London where she completed an MA in Art Business through Sotheby’s Institute of Art. After undertaking a research internship for an Old Master dealer in Kensington, she went on to work in a number of roles for Christie’s, White Cube Gallery, and Sotheby’s. She has always loved the fast-paced nature of the auction business – “not only are no two days the same, but the working environment is always thriving and forward-looking”. For Rachel, returning to New Zealand to join the team Webb’s has been a pleasure, and she is enjoying applying her industry experience and specialisation to the field of New Zealand art which she is most passionate about.
