WEBB’S

Fine Jewellery and Watches, and Antique and Contemporary Jewellery go under the hammer on Saturday 30 November.

The Webb’s Jewellery team presents our Fine Jewellery and Watches sale to be held on 30 November 2013 at 11:00am, following the success of our August auction with our newly designed and well-received catalogue. This sale features an even-wider range of brooches, antique jewellery, pearls, watches and stunning diamond jewellery than ever before; it is time to lift the bar even higher. Diamonds are again well represented with a very important contemporary Cartier solitaire diamond ring, which is designed in platinum and claw set with a large 3.55ct pear-shaped diamond. A rare, matching diamond necklace and bracelet set in platinum has 84 round-cut brilliant diamonds all of the same size, colour and clarity; this is a feat unto itself in the international diamond market. Also highlighted are a fancy yellow-gold 4.226ct diamond ring of old minecut style with an interesting history from the 1870s and a beautifully constructed 19th-century Indian yellow-gold necklace with emerald and old, rose-cut diamonds.

We are delighted to offer private sales at Webb’s, for those interested in buying loose diamonds of any size, colour, clarity and cut, outside of our auction calendar. Countless private transactions have been brokered through Webb’s on behalf of our clients and our direct access to an international diamond supply uniquely qualifies Webb’s to facilitate lucrative transactions off the auction floor as well as on it. This service is discreet and all aspects of a private sale are held in the strictest confidence. Enquiries from those looking to buy privately are welcomed. The Webb’s Fine Jewellery and Watches specialists will reach out to our extensive network in order to source the loose diamonds you are seeking.

A strong offering of watches, including a men’s Rolex Daytona Cosmograph in steel and gold, includes many from the houses of Rolex, Omega, Franck Muller, Breguet and Girard Perregaux. For those seeking the unusual, the sale presents a fantasy section of finely set stones in elaborate and colourful designs. The ever-popular Buy/Sell/Collect Auction will make up a second sale to be held at 2.30pm on Saturday 30 November. Included is an extensive collection of vintage, retro and contemporary jewellery including bracelets, earrings, necklaces, easyto-wear watches, rings and affordable gold pieces.

FINE JEWELLERY & WATCHES

MARKET HIGHLIGHTS. THE CAMPANA BROTHERS X FABIO SALINI CREATE ‘DANGEROUS LUXURY’ LINE

PEARLS: AN EXHIBITION ON AT THE V&A MUSEUM The invite to view for this show reads, ‘Experience the beauty and allure of pearls which across centuries and cultures have long been associated with wealth, royalty and glamour.’ Until January next year, the V&A and the Qatar Museums Authority explore the history of pearls from the early Roman Empire through to present day. Of course, the exhibition is not just

an exhibition and also holds relevant events that include a seminar on ‘How to wear pearls’ and a practical workshop on couture embroidery using pearls. For those who won’t be getting along to the show, the V&A Museum boast one of the finest web content services and features a fantastic video on the exhibition.

FINE JEWELLERY FEMMES: NEW NAMES TO KNOW Coinciding with the start of Frieze last month, London launched Eugenie Niarchos’ debut fine jewellery line at Dover Street Market, as part of the destination store’s Open House Frieze showcase. First unveiled during the Paris Haute Couture, ‘Venyx’ sees Niarchos join a growing coterie of fashionable young women bringing an avant-garde edge to fine jewellery’s luxury lineage. Sabine G ‘Heart’ 18 carat rose gold ring set with diamonds. The designer’s first fine jewellery collection draws from the rich textures of 12th century interiors.

Niarchos’ entry into this rarified market comes at a time when even online retailers from MatchesFashion.com to Net-aPorter are rallying behind this new guard of young creatives, boldly updating the storied category. “Fine jewellery is an important growth category for us,” explains MatchesFashion.com’s head of fashion, Natalie Kingham. “Designers such as Delfina Delletrez, Noor Fares and Matchstick Jewellery offer a fresh approach that feels very accessible.”

An unlikely marriage between haute Roman jewellery designer Fabio Salini, and nature-loving Brazilian furniture designers Fernando and Humberto Campana has yielded an intriguing collection of jewellery that fuses the low with the luxury. From the ignoble corner, the Campana brothers plucked humble materials from their native Brazil, including bamboo and a local straw called Capim Dourado, or ‘golden grass.’ Salini, meanwhile, brought buckets of rose gold and the rocks - in this case, brown diamonds which melt into the jewellery’s natural warm hues. Silky strands of straw anchored with gold thread into brilliant ray or disc formations, rose gold bases, bamboo frames and wavy trims of crusted diamonds. Logistically, however, they were a nightmare to produce. “Neither the straw nor the bamboo could be put in water, fire or soldering acids, which is basically every material fundamental to the goldsmith process,” says Salini from his atelier in Rome, where each item was handcrafted. “I went a bit crazy - it took me over eight months to produce just eight pieces. They are actually extremely wearable and very light,” he observes. At between €35,000 - €65,000 each, they also fall on the extreme side of luxury pricing. Fittingly named ‘Dangerous Luxury’ jewellery, the collection is now on view and for sale at Salini’s Rome atelier.

Tears of the gods

WEBB’S

Pearls of wisdom, pearls of delight, something so precious, the queen of the night. From its humble beginnings, forming around an ‘irritating’ object within the shell of a mollusc, the gorgeous bead of the ocean floor has long been revered by peoples and cultures across the world. From the Middle East to the Pacific, from the Caribbean to the West Coast of Australia, the ‘tears of the Gods’ have held a special allure for mankind, their iridescent beauty shimmering in their shells and in the water.

As the Spanish, Portuguese, French, Dutch and British began their explorative journeys around the planet, the pearl was returned to Europe, and later America, where it soon adorned the ears, necks, busts and hands of royalty and the upper classes. With the advent of the 20 th century, a new form of royalty emerged which was not founded entirely on birthright but in power or celebrity. Movie stars, fashion designers, the First Lady, singers, the wives or daughters of diplomats, writers and artists: the ‘stars’ were born and pearl wasn’t a singer to the star, pearl was her ‘other’ best friend. Think Jackie Kennedy, Coco Chanel, Elizabeth Taylor, Grace Kelly or Marilyn Munroe and a vision of a décolletage glowing with pearls is close at hand. The beauty and allure of pearls across centuries and cultures has long been associated with wealth, royalty and glamour in all shapes and in a myriad of colours: ivory, silver, blue, yellow and rich gold, through to grey, brown, aubergine, green and black. As the 20 th century drew to a close, the pearl or more particularly its most famous incarnation, the pearl necklace, became seen as a slightly anachronistic piece: the debutante standard of years gone by or the signature of the silver screen rather than a modern, new-era jewellery alternative. Yet the lustre of the pearl and its endearing qualities are not dependent on trends or the wants and needs of a generation; beauty is timeless and the fabulous and fashionable are once again searching, delving and diving for pearls.

At the recent Chanel Haute Couture show in Paris, mega pop star Rihanna wore nothing but a cardigan and a vast pearl necklace, creating global interest and tens of thousands of new pearl lovers in the process. The pearl makes up the go-to jewellery of the new supermodels; Cara Delevingne and Dree Hemingway wear little else (in Hemingway’s case, her grandfather would surely have approved) and the world’s most famous fashion tome, Vogue, expounded the virtues of the pearl across features and fashion editorials in the recently published September 2013 edition. The prestigious Victoria & Albert Museum, long a purveyor of the best of both the historical and contemporary in equal measure, is perfectly on time with their current exhibition ‘Pearls’ which runs from 21 September 2013 to 19 January 2014. In June this year, Christie’s of London sold a three-row naturalpearl necklace for $1.64 million and a diamond and pearl brooch for $663,829, thus confirming the strength of the contemporary pearl market. Golden pearls are rapidly becoming a popular purchasing option, particularly with Chinese and Asian consumers. In terms of shape, there is a new trend towards longer drops and settings are becoming either more elaborate or simpler – there are no rules to the dawning of the new pearl age – but the five S’s of buying pearls remain the same: Shine, Surface, Shape, Shade and Size. In short, not only is the pearl in vogue again, it is in demand. As Jackie Kennedy once said, “Pearls are always appropriate” but, clearly, pearls are more appropriate and precious now than they ever were.

Important Paintings & Contemporary Art

CATALOGUE 367

WEBB’S

Following on an incredibly successful year which has seen art sales achieve in excess of $5.93 million, Webb’s forthcoming sale of Important Paintings & Contemporary Art will present an exceptional selection of rare art representing key areas in the mainstay of New Zealand’s art history. It is an absolute pleasure to present Gordon Walters’ Genealogy to the market. The Genealogy series represents the very pinnacle of Walters’ exploration into the rhythm and balance of the koru form. This is a truly exceptional work which represents the quintessence of Walters’ finest practice. Bill Hammond’s epic Farmer’s Market has the potential to break new ground in the secondary market for Hammond’s work and set a new record. It is derived from the very upper tier of the artist’s later practice, and the secondary market has never been exposed before to the likes of this work. Farmer’s Market will be accompanied by a classic smallerscale work by the artist encompassing the core concerns of his 1990s practice: Fly, in addition to the 2009 work, Moa Hunter Cave 2, and two rare 1980s’ paintings. Leading the sale’s selection of contemporary art in both scale and significance is Shane Cotton’s

The Painted Bird, which was recently exhibited as part of the artist’s mid-career survey at City Gallery Wellington. Other important contemporary works include Bill Culbert’s fluorescent tube work Off White, and Jim McMurtry, a work by Michael Parekowhai which preceded the artist’s iconic large-scale sculpture of the same subject. Another significant work which is certain to capture the attention of the buying audience is Michael Smither’s Elizabeth with Sarah and Joseph. This large-scale painting encompasses the core concerns of Smither’s artistic remit in creating his Domestic series: namely, the desire to give centrality and importance to the everyday aspects of domestic life. At the heart of New Zealand’s arthistorical narrative is the market for modern works. In recognition of this, the sale comprehensively surveys the most-acclaimed names of this period. Two important mid-1980s’ works by Pat Hanly, Hope Vessel Attacked and Pacific Fire, will accompany a significant still life by Michael Illingworth, and two works by Allen Maddox, including a 1987 neon-green grid painting. A fine Tony Fomison work on paper and a 1978 painting by the artist entitled Thinking Quietly with Eyes On will be presented also, in addition to works by Colin McCahon, Rita Angus and Ralph Hotere. Finally, the inclusion of the three paintings by Charles Goldie and Gottfried Lindauer: ‘One of the Old School’, Wiripine Ninia A Ngati Awa Chieftainess, Te Hei, A Ngati Raukawa Chieftainess and Mrs Huia Whakamairu comprise the core offering of the sale’s historical component. Not in recent history has there ever been such a strong and comprehensive selection of highvalue, exceptional Maori portraits within a single sale.

Care for jewellery To preserve the beauty and sparkle of your fine jewellery it is important to maintain , understand the individual needs of your piece and maintain it’s care so it will shine for years to come.

While Diamonds are durable, they can chip. The hardness of a gem is based on a gem trade standard called Moh’s Scale, developed in the 19th century. The scale rates the hardness of a material out of 10 and at each higher number it can be abrasive to a material with a lower number. Diamonds are rated the highest at 10; rubies and sapphires are 9; emeralds and topaz are 8; garnets, tourmalines and quartz are 7. Those materials below 7 can be scratched including opal, turquoise, lapis lazuli, coral and pearl. Gold, silver and platinum metals are only rated at between 2.5 and 4 Some simple and easy steps in maintaining your jewellery: - Never allow your jewellery to come into contact with chlorine bleach, as it can pit gold alloys. It will also servely tarnish silver. - Never wear your jewellery while showering or cleaning, as gold jewellery will develop a soapy film and dull the appearance. - Never expose your gemstones to salt water and harsh chemicals, which will dull and erode your gems. - Never rub gold or silver with anything other than a polishing cloth or piece of felt. - Never clean cultured pearls with chemicals or abrasives, as this will damage and scratch the surface of the pearls. - Avoid allowing pearls to come into contact with perfumes, hairspray and cosmetics.

90

CATALOGUE 357

- Never wear jewellery to bed or while participating in sport, as this may cause kinking, snagging or breakage. Recommended: - Clean your diamonds with a mild liquid detergent and a soft brush, or one of the specially designed jewellery cleaners available from your jeweler. - Remove jewellery before using household cleaners as they can contain chemicals which can be harmful to your precious jewellery - Have your jeweller re-string your pearls once a year, as the strand could be stretched and by contact with chemicals such as perfumes and hairspray. Have pearls knotted between each one, this will prevent the loss of pearls if the string should break. - Wrap your pearls in tissue paper or place in a cloth bag when storing and keep them in a box away from other jewellery as you don’t want your other jewellery to scratch the pearls. - Store your jewellery in a jewellery roll when travelling, it will keep the jewellery organised and free from tangles and scratches. - Make sure you have a detailed insurance valuation for your jewellery. As a rough guide, the description in a professional jewellery valuation will be detailed enough that a jeweller could use it draw a pretty accurate sketch of the item. - A professional jeweller should check jewellery for damage or wear, on a regular basis.

What is a diamond? A diamond is a type of crystallised carbon formed at extremely high temperatures and under immense pressure. This process, naturally occurring about 200 kilometres beneath the earth’s surface, produces one of the hardest and most precious of all known natural substances. No two diamonds are the same. A diamond’s worth and quality are determined by the Four Cs: a concept first introduced by De Beers in 1939.

The Four C’s CUT, CARAT, COLOUR, CLARITY Cut A diamond’s cut grade refers to the quality of the tiny surfaces, or facets, polished onto its surface. The facets, known as the crown, culet, table, girdle and pavilion, are arranged with precise mathematical proportions to maximise a diamond’s fire, life and brilliance. The cut, not to be confused with the shape, is the only element of the four Cs to be influenced by the human hand. There are tables of proportion percentages, which are for diamond cutters and graders. Diamond cut grades range from ‘excellent’ and ‘very good’, to the mid-range ‘good’ and low-end classifications of ‘fair’ and ‘poor’. Carat Carat is the unit of weight for all gemstones. One carat is subdivided into 100 ‘points’. Therefore, a diamond measuring 75 points is three-quarters of a carat in weight or 0.75ct. There are five carats in a gram. Carat is a measure of weight, not size. Most importantly, two diamonds can be of equal carat weight, but their values can differ greatly due to the cut, colour and clarity of each. Colour Ideally, a white diamond should have no colour at all – like a drop of spring water. Increasing degrees of body colour are measured on a scale

ranging from no colour at all (D) to deeply coloured (Z). Beyond ‘Z’ is the range where the diamond’s colour is vivid and rich; these are called ‘fancy colours’. The differences between one shade and the next are very subtle, so grading is carried out under controlled lighting, using a master diamond sample set for comparison and accuracy. Natural diamonds also occur in shades of blue, green, yellow-orange, pink, red and even black. Known as ‘coloured fancies’, these stones are extremely rare and valuable. They are graded according to the intensity of their colour. Clarity Clarity refers to the presence of inclusions in a diamond. All diamonds contain imperfections. These are naturally occurring features – wisps of minerals, uncrystallised carbon and tiny fractures – formed deep within the diamond when it was first created. Most inclusions are not visible to the naked eye. The clarity of a diamond is graded by a gemmologist using 10X magnification. Clarity grades range from IF and FL (internally flawless) to I (included); a grade may also indicate whether the inclusion is near the centre of the stone or along its girdle, or outer edge. WEBB’S

IMPORTANT CONDITIONS OF SALES Before the sale, all lots may be examined at the exhibition times specified in the catalogue. Interested persons including, without limitation, bidder’s representatives and auction agents, are understood to have examined all lots which they purchase and to accept their condition as they are at the moment of the fall of the auctioneer’s hammer, and not necessarily as they are described in any written material or oral communications. In placing bids, auction participants acknowledge that they have independently inspected and evaluated every lot they are bidding on. FINE JEWELLERY Independent Gemmological Reports and Valuations: Valuations are made available to Webb’s customers to provide an independent opinion as to the quality of the stones and metals comprising a piece, and so that buyers can obtain suitable insurance cover immediately upon purchase and prior to delivery. A valuation for insurance purposes represents a calculated replacement cost allowing for maximum retail margins, so that an insurer can assess the outer limit of their exposure to risk. It does not represent actual new retail replacement, as it makes no provision for competitive trade practice, or for discounts obtained by individual bargaining. Value estimates have been arrived at with the assistance of experts, tests and other methods which Webb’s has deemed in its sole discretion to be appropriate. Whilst Webb’s staff will assist buyers in understanding the methodology and technical details of Gemmological reports and valuations, all auction participants are responsible for reaching their own conclusions as to the value of lots prior to bidding. Webb’s, its consultants and employees make no representation or warranty regarding any opinion, valuation or certificate of any item on offer. Buyers should note the stated purpose of the valuation (insurance, retail market, cash value, estate division etc).

Unless otherwise stated, all stones have been mounted when assessed for weight, colour or clarity, and the descriptions given in the catalogue or report are therefore limited in accuracy. Where an actual weight is given, the stone will have been weighed loose to minimise error margins. Nonetheless, the buyer accepts that all reports and descriptions remain opinions and not matters of fact. JEWELS Buy/Sell/Collect An exceptional offering of antique and desirable modern pieces, amongst which are diamond rings, heavy gold chains, several gold wrist and pocket watches, diamond and precious stone rings, earrings, heavy silver chains, rock-crystal beads, lockets, pendants, 19th-century paste set jewellery and many other items of interest, mostly without reserve. WRIST & POCKET WATCHES Important Conditions of Sale for Watches: As many of the timepieces are old, or their history is unknown, Webb’s offers no guarantee as to the mechanical condition or condition of seals, etc. A timepiece described as ‘fine’ or ‘as new’ is an opinion relating to appearance only. All watches are sold as viewed. It shall be assumed that all buyers have inspected the lots and that they are happy with them in all respects. Watches cannot be returned on the grounds that repairs or service have been carried out, or parts (including straps or bracelets) have been supplied, by anyone other than the named maker. Notwithstanding the foregoing condition, named wristwatches are sold on the basis that the movement (or movement and case where both would normally have been manufactured by the named maker) were manufactured by the named maker. It is recommended that buyers have watches serviced promptly to ensure that damage does not arise from faulty seals or any other aspect of mechanical condition.
