infocus important works of art The art component of the December Sale consists of three separate sections: an Important Works of Art sale on Monday 8 December and Works from the Estate of Giovanni Intra and a Private Collection of Works on Paper to be held on the following night, Tuesday 9 December. Gracing the cover and undoubtedly a highlight of the sale is the rare and important work on canvas by Gordon Walters, Black and Red (lot 628). This work was produced in 1968, around the time Walters stopped using hardboard, moving instead to the more sympathetic nature of the texture of the canvas. For Walters, it served to soften the hard-edged image. Exquisite in its detail and exacting precision, Black and Red is a study in elegance and discomfort. The strong horizontal bands end in the koru bulbs, whose grouped concentration hold the balance of the painting’s composition. The strong assertive colour combination of red and black is typical of the considerable variation of colour Walters used in the late 1960s. Dr Michael Dunn explores the painting’s position within Gordon Walters’ oeuvre on page 74 of the catalogue. There are a number of works in the sale where artists have explored the shaped canvas. Gretchen Albrecht’s familiar ovals and hemispheres have formed the basis of her practice since the early 1980s. Small Oval – (Nomadic Geometries) (lot 609) is a compelling combination of moody blue and purple where the physicality of the paint application within the elliptical oval is made obvious. Sweeping strokes of colour, incorporating rectangular blocks of pigment float across the surface. The singing combinations allure, resonate and reflect particular emotional moods. Like Gretchen Albrecht, Max Gimblett’s shaped canvases convey a variety of associations and meanings. The physical support offers various solutions depending on the technique he is employing. His signature materials include leaves of precious metal, resins, epoxy, paint and ink. Dragon Hum (lot 622) is a calligraphic sweep of stark contrast. Overlaid pigment is poured over, splashed on, and flung at the canvas in monochromatic tones of white black and grey. The raw canvas is allowed to show through in places: evidence that the work has been tilted and spun during the course of its making. In contrast to the expressionistic flourishes of Gimblett and Albrecht, Roy Good’s Triangle Suite, (lot 615) employs the shaped canvas as an extension of his interest in the geometries of his compositional structure. Careful consideration, pure geometry and hard-edged abstraction are applied and the emotion is conveyed through lively colour combinations, rather than expressionistic use of paint. Julia Morison’s Amalgame 100 (lot 610) also employs an unusual support. This extraordinary body of work was created by Morison during her New Zealand Moet and Chandon Fellowship, of which she was the inaugural winner. It was exhibited in Cadran Solaire, Troyes, France in 1991 with 100 other pieces all resembling altar boxes. This triptych consists of hinged doors covering a glazed tray. Symbols adorn the front, inside panels and central piece, and it can be hung or stood, open or closed, creating a variety of views. Bill Hammond has been painting on screens for over 20 years. One of the first was exhibited at Fisher Gallery (now Te Tuhi Centre for the Arts) in the 1985 show entitled ‘The Folding Image’ curated by Mary Vavasour. Works included a screen by Colin McCahon, which had been shown at RKS Gallery in the 1970s and is now in the collection of the Auckland Art Gallery alongside the work of Pat Hanly, Dick Frizzell, Gavin Chilcott, Ralph Hotere and Mary McIntyre. Travel to Japan in the early 1990s cemented Hammond’s interest in the screen as an article of utilitarian furniture and elegant design, offering privacy and, over time, it was developed into decoration. The mahogany support, on which Threshing Dog The Golden Bough (lot 627) is applied, is a curved, finely grained screen, hinged
to create convex and concave structures . The work has a twodimensional intent, despite the free-standing three dimensionality of the screen as an object. Pat Hanly’s plywood constructions such as Child’s Urgent Signalling (lot 616) and Bouquet (lot 614) are works which have been made up from broken paintings. Seen as a reaction to the ‘Cleanism’ of Post-Modernism, they are deliberately crude, their making and application, their nails and staples allowed to show. The viewer is invited to re-experience the paintings through their ‘Alterations’. He urges the viewer to “Disengage your old brain!” Stephen Bambury has used aluminium panels as a primary support since 1989; this material breaks away from the conventional notions of art as being supported on stretched canvas or board. Its relative thinness enables it to be hung close to the wall challenging the notions of pictorial space. The material of “In a Continual Repetition of Nature” (Chakra #9) (lot 632) is particular to Bambury. Resin and graphite have long been important materials within his diverse and experimental approach to painting. The materials contrast in their values, their colour, their reflective nature and their transparency. We are pleased to be holding the sale of works from the Estate of Giovanni Intra (lot 800–852). Giovanni Intra (1968–2002) was an influential writer, critic, artist and curator. An Elam School of Fine Arts Master’s graduate, Intra is best known in New Zealand for founding the alternative artist-run space Teststrip in Auckland in 1992 with Denise Kum, et al., Daniel Malone, Judy Darragh, Kirsty Cameron and Lucy Macdonald. His contemporaries at art school included Michael Parekowhai, Jim Speers, Ann Shelton and Megan Jenkinson. Travelling to Los Angeles on a Fulbright scholarship in 1996, he earned a Master’s degree in Criticism and Theory from the Art Center College of Design at Pasadena, California in 2001. Intra opened the ground-breaking gallery China Art Objects in 1999; it was designed by Pae White and built by Intra and his friends. He was the West Coast editor for Art + Text and a contributor to ArtNet, ArtForum and Bookforum among other publications. Intra’s works are held in private and public collections including the Jim Barr and Mary Barr Collection, the Chartwell Collection and the Govett Brewster Art Gallery, New Plymouth. A selection of archival material is held in the E.H. Mc Cormick research Library at the Auckland Art Gallery. The works offered in this catalogue were made in the early to mid-1990s during Intra’s study at Elam or just after. This is the first cohesive offering of works on the auction market and a chance for collectors and admirers to own a work by a very talented, experimental practitioner who developed a successful international reputation. The works in the catalogue have been selected to provide an overview of early, developmental practice. Various colleagues, friends and associates have viewed the selection of work and Webb’s would like to thank those who took the time to view the collection and offer advice and catalogue information. The Private Collection of Works on Paper (lot 853–914) consists of 60+ lots of original works on paper and limited-edition prints. All produced in the late 1980s and early 1990s, works by Pat Hanly, Dick Frizzell, Fatu Feu’u and John Reynolds predominate. Low edition numbers, pristine condition and relative rarity make this an interesting and eclectic offering of original works on paper, lithographs, woodcuts and etchings. EMMA FOX

This final Decorative Arts sale of the 2008 season includes a collection of New Zealand artefacts and memorablia featuring an early contact period Mere Pounamu and three, ever popular, taxidermy Kiwis. Also included in this catalogue is a fine selection of silver, Georgian and Victorian furniture, Oriental and European porcelain as well as paintings and other unique decorator items. A highlight of the sale, and an item rarely seen on the New Zealand auction market, is a cold painted, bronze and ivory figure table lamp by leading Art Déco craftsman and ivory carver Ferdinand Preiss (1892-1943). The Stile (lot 388) is mounted on marble and depicts a young woman dressed in a stylishly casual short-sleeved blouse and pair of slacks, leaning forward with her hands resting on two pillars. It was crafted c.1930.

March 2009 Not three men in a boat but seven - in a 24 ton coasting schooner ‘Alpha’ under Captain Tom Sayers bound for the isle MacQuarrie to hunt & boil sea elephant’s blubber. A cook, a sailing master, and crew of five including a redhead (Its scarce fair to write verse on/The marks with which Nature adorneth one’s person) battle a hurricane, lose their way, enquire of the ship ‘Portland’ “Will you give us our longitude, sir if you please?.” Read of their detailed adventures in verse and ponder on the publishing of this rare item in San Franciso in 1882. Immediately after the end of WWI Preiss and his associate Arthur Kassler built a business together, which would reach full production during the 1920s. Preiss was the artistic director whereas Kassler devoted himself to the commercial side of the business. Their specialty was Art Déco-style cabinet sculptures which combined ivory with painted bronze and which were mounted on plinths made of onyz or marble and sometimes also on mantelpiece clocks or lampstands, such as this piece. The models, which were practically all designed by Ferdinand Preiss, were produced in limited editions. The Stile is signed F.Preiss and carries foundry marks to the stand and figure. From the team in the Decorative Arts department, we wish you a happy holiday season and all the best for the New Year.

The Vinka Lucas Archive Collections Vinka Lucas is probably best known to a younger generation of New Zealand women as a specialist in bridal wear through her present company Vinka Brides. However, between the 1960’s and 1980’s Vinka owned and operated a designer salon named Maree de Maru and subsequently added the label Vinka Lucas After Five. During an extended period of working overseas she operated under the label Vinka Lucas Paris. Under these labels she designed and manufactured luxurious and glamorous evening and cocktail wear. The collection of approximately four hundred pieces which Webb’s has been asked to auction has been archived during the past forty years. Some gowns were designed and made for Vinka herself, others represent a selection that Vinka has chosen to retain from each label. The collection contains a large number of spectacular after five cocktail and formal evening dresses in rich and exotic fabrics as well as a small selection of bridal wear. There are also two gowns that were made for the Miss New Zealand Contest in the 60’s with the crowns and coronation cape. Watch our website in the New Year for more details of this unique and exciting auction. Illustrated: An evening dress of simple sleeveless design in tie-dyed silk velvet with a matching spectacular coat. The sleeves and hem are trimmed with red, black tipped, ostrich feathers.

6.00PM Wrist & pocket wATCHES Important Conditions Sale for Watches: Please note: as many of the timepieces are old, or their history is unknown, Webb’s offers no guarantee as to mechanical condition or condition of seals etc. A timepiece described as ‘fine’ or ‘as new’ is an opinion as to appearance only. All watches are sold as viewed. It shall be assumed that all buyers have inspected the lots and that they are happy with them in all respects. Watches cannot be returned on the grounds that repairs or service have been carried out, or parts (including straps or bracelets) have been supplied, by anyone other than the named maker. Notwithstanding the foregoing condition, named wristwatches are sold on the basis that the movement (or movement and case where both would normally have been manufactured by the named maker) were manufactured by the named maker. It is recommended that buyers have watches serviced promptly to ensure that damage does not arise from faulty seals or any other aspect of mechanical condition. 1

A valuation for insurance purposes represents a calculated replacement cost allowing for maximum retail margins, such that an Insurer can assess the outer limit of their exposure to risk. It does not represent actual new retail replacement as it makes no provision for competitive trade practice, or for discounts obtained by individual bargaining. As fashion, desirability and current market forces all have variable impact on second hand or Auction value, there is no direct formula for estimation of such value by interpolation from Insurable value. As the currency exchange rate and spot metal prices have a marked effect on jewellery valuations, buyers should note the date and prevailing economic factors at the time that the valuation was produced. Once all of the prevailing parameters have been established, it is possible for an experienced person to interpolate a rough estimate of the current cost of manufacture from past insurable value, but again that exercise will give no indication of actual market forces. Buyers should also note the stated purpose of the valuation (Insurance, Retail Market, Cash Value, Estate Division etc.). All valuations remain opinions and not matters of fact. Whilst Webb’s staff will assist buyers to understand the methodology and technical details of Gemmological reports and valuations, buyers must make their own assessment of an item’s value before bidding. Webb’s its consultants and employees make no representation or warranty regarding any outside opinion, valuation or certificate of any item on offer.
Please note: where gemological reports are available these should be read together with the catalogue description. Should there be, through error, omission or introduction of better evidence, any significant difference between the catalogued description and that provided in the gemologist’s report, it shall be assumed that the buyer has inspected the report and is buying in acceptance of it. Unless otherwise stated, all stones have been assessed for weight, colour or clarity mounted and the descriptions given in the catalogue or report are therefore based on estimates which are limited in accuracy. Where an actual weight is given the stone will have been weighed loose, however while the grading of a stone loose will minimise error margins it shall be accepted by the buyer that all reports and descriptions remain opinions and not matters of fact.

Bill Hammond 627 Bill Hammond
Threshing Dog The Golden Bough acrylic on two fold screen, title inscribed, signed and dated 2002 1660mm x 1570mm Provenance: Purchased from Peter McLeavey Gallery, Wellington 2002
$180,000 - $220,000
The screen is a relatively unconventional format for painting in that it is freestanding and functional. In this case, it is also curved and made of two parts that are joined at the centre, recalling the diptych form. The screen lies somewhere between applied and fine art, often more towards the craft end of the scale unless painted by an artist of Hammond’s talent. In his hands, it becomes a major work of art in its own right independent of any functional role it might play. The format fits Bill Hammond who has often painted on unconventional supports by choice, among them old coffee table-tops and a discarded tent. It suits the off-beat aspect of his work and persona. But, as Greg O’Brien has noted, his paintings can have ‘a decorative screen-like quality’ so what better than an actual screen upon which to project his ideas. His bird man figures and fragmentary landscape seem perfectly at home in their new setting and work well in the screen’s more informal relationship with the spectator. The bird man figures are quintessential Bill Hammond more than the many other motifs he has used throughout his career. They identify the painting as his, no other signature is required. There is a strangeness about them, an otherness, reminiscent of some ancient Egyptian god, part man part bird, carved in a Pharaoh’s tomb and enacting some secret rite to do with the mystery and meaning of life, death and regeneration. And the allusion is relevant here when Hammond draws our attention in his title to Sir James George Frazer (1854– 1941) and his book The Golden Bough, a study of magic and religion published in 1922. The Threshing Dog, Frazer informs us, was the name given to the man who gave the stroke of the sickle or scythe to the last sheaf of the harvest. Hammond shows stalks of grain in his painting below the bird man figure cutting the branch of a tree with a handsaw. Animals like the dog or wolf were seen in European peasant superstition to embody the life spirit of the harvest which regenerated with the seasons. It was thought that the spirit of the animal could pass into the thresher of the last sheaf whose roll as the Threshing Dog could involve being treated like the animal he represented in festivities at the end of the harvest. Although Hammond’s meaning is difficult to fathom, it seems to relate to the harvesting of the last species of birds and trees in the colonial environment and the onus of transmitting the life force that passes to the one who harvests the last crop, the Threshing Dog. But there is no clear narrative intended here. As Hammond has said, “birds’ heads don’t show any emotion” or at least not that we can easily interpret. It is that inscrutable stare, that blank gaze which seems primeval and somewhat scary. His birds’ heads in this work look in and out of the screen spaces but are not looking at us. We seem to be in some twilight world, tinted with grey mists and lacking topographical landmarks whose setting is out of our time and comfort zone. The painter’s remarks about the Auckland Islands seem relevant: “It’s bird land. You feel like a time traveller, as if you have just stumbled upon it – primeval forest, ratas like Walt Disney would make. It’s a beautiful place but it’s also full of ghosts, shipwrecks, death ...” MICHAEL DUNN

Gordon Walters 628 GORDON WALTERS
Black and Red , 1968 pva and acrylic on canvas 910mm x 1221mm Provenance: Private Collection, Auckland, Originally puchased from Peter McLeavey Gallery, Wellington1969. Purchased Webb’s 1992.
$450,000 - $500,000
Black and Red, 1968, is from Gordon Walters’ most famous series of paintings based on the Maori motif called the koru. The koru series is now regarded by many discerning collectors and art critics as among the finest abstract painting produced in New Zealand. Walters began experimenting with the koru motif in the mid-1950s making small studies on paper in black and white, and colour. Initially these were much freer in design and handling than were the first large paintings he exhibited in the mid-1960s. He used a process of trial and error and experimentation in modifying, simplifying and geometricising the koru motif before he felt confident enough to commit it to a large painted format. Even then, he began by using hardboard supports that proved less than ideal for the smooth paint application he required to give his forms sharp definition and optimum contrast. By 1968, the year he painted Black and Red, Walters has dispensed with hardboard in favour of stretched canvas so that the PVA and acrylic paints he used could bond better with the support and not appear to be lying on top of it, as had happened with the hardboard. In this case, he carried the painted image around the sides of the stretcher to reinforce that effect. At the time, the early koru paintings seemed radical and were not immediately understood because there was little context for them. Interestingly, Colin McCahon was among the first private buyers of a koru work in 1966. Black and Red belongs to the style known as geometric abstraction, a style not much practised in New Zealand then when more gestural and expressionistic handling was the norm. The obvious feature of geometric abstraction is the focus on a few precisely drawn forms, usually made with the help of instruments such as the ruler, square and compass. Significantly, Walters had a background as a layout artist and designer which familiarised him with working on a drafting table, rather than an easel, and being exact in his calculation of divisions of the surface and geometrical relationships between forms. He transferred his image to the canvas only after he had fully resolved it by preliminary studies, sometimes employing collage as well as drawings. All his koru paintings are based on a precisely drawn linear scaffolding. In painting the image, Walters applied his medium thinly with minimal signs of process. The red was applied evenly over the surface first and allowed to dry before the black was painted over it establishing the final forms. Some of the painters he admired, like Bridget Riley and Victor Vasarely, used assistants to paint their works, an option Walters never adopted. Rather he painstakingly handpainted each work himself. This helps explain why the koru works are so rare and sought-after. Often he confined himself to monochrome because his imagery depends on the relationship between a few forms for its effect and this is maximised by the elimination of extraneous elements. More rarely he used colour, instead of black and white, as a means of coding and contrasting his forms. Here the visual counterpoint between light and dark which animates the image is brought out by the interplay of black and red. In the process, the tonal contrast is somewhat reduced and the image seems more stable to the eye than in some of the koru series where flicker and after-images appear. Op artists sought to enhance these perceptual effects but Walters rarely did so and always kept a distance from Op. He preferred to set up an interplay between positive and negative readings of his forms, as here, where an alternation between black and red bands at the left is brought to a climax at the far right in the stacked clusters of koru ‘bulbs’. These switch from red to black and back again with an insistent rhythmic beat. This substitutes for conventional spatial movement and gives the viewer a virtual equivalent that is based on our perception of how forms interact and appear to recede and advance. During this period, Walters was arguably at his most inventive and experimental in his use of the koru motif. Not only does he introduce the unexpected bright red colour but he also pushes the koru ‘bulbs’ to the far right of his canvas giving a daring asymmetry to the image. The even, hard-edged focus of his painting gives maximum impact to the design. Although Walters’ koru paintings are based on a Maori motif, he did not initially stress this aspect in his first exhibitions of them and reviewers did not make the connection. Titles like Black and Red stressed the formal properties of European abstraction rather than Maori references even though the black and red colouring, like the koru, can be sourced in Maori kowhaiwhai paintings. Soon afterwards, however, he began to use Maori titles often as a form of acknowledgement and sign of respect for his sources. By the 1990s, Walters’ koru paintings became widely influential on both Maori and Pakeha contemporary painters and his series remains the benchmark of quality to which others must aspire. Modern Day
acrylic on linen, title inscribed, signed and dated 1991 700mm x 1000mm
$65,000 - $75,000
Set within a commercial business area of skyscrapers and dark alleys, Bill Hammond’s Modern Day features a selection of buildings with human features working on computers or tills, drinking martinis, talking on cellphones, dancing or pushing supermarket trolleys. The painting is characteristic of Hammond’s works of the 1990s, which sought to comment on the rise of consumerism, materialism and crime together with the depersonalising effect of technological advances. The work is completed in a quirky style, reminiscent of 1980s comic strips and cartoons, and all forms are sketched in a cursory manner. Hammond tempers his paucity of line with areas of thickly brushed colour and a wealth of intricate details. A mob of building-people are seen marching in a patch of black through the business district, their features bland and uniform while calligraphic
marks reminiscent of city graffiti decorate the drainpipes. Continuing in the style of comics, circles of magnification are provided, giving insight to the internal goings-on in some of the buildings, where speeches are made and transactions completed. The frenetic energy of the piece is heightened by the jumbled collection of fractured viewpoints, which in turn capture and emanate the claustrophobic feel of a concrete jungle. Indeed, Robert Leonard sums up this period of Hammond’s work: “Wired, paranoid, hyped-up, his paintings (of the late 1980s) were junky, punky and dystopian – juiced up with sadistic speed-freak cartoon-violence. They offered no pastoral idyll or redemptive promised land, but a deregulated incubator-world super-heated with information.” JEMMA FIELD

Twilight of the Idols graphite, oilstick and acrylic on three wood panels, title inscribed, signed and dated 1992 2440mm x 3600mm
$50,000 - $80,000
Featuring a sombre ground inscribed with a series of calligraphic lines, patterns, symbols and shapes, Twilight of the Idols is testament to Reynolds’ self-professed love of drawing. Indeed, the artist himself has said: “painting was only the backdrop for the real drama – the drawing, often with a text component … I would draw with everything except a paint brush – with chunky graphite sticks, Japanese silver enamel paint markers, spray cans, any instrument that makes a mark.” Executed on a large scale, the sonorous dark grey field of colour absorbs and consumes the viewer with a subtle, calming effect. The surface is, however, somewhat deceiving. From a distance, it appears to be a flat, milky black punctuated by three large blue and red spots but closer inspection reveals that the surface comprises shifting veils of colour and a myriad of lines. Thick swathes of the artist’s brush are readily apparent and the colour oscillates between a deep, murky black to a pale, almost luminous, grey where the paint has bled, run and dripped. Little white, red and deep pink circles like air bubbles stream upwards in linear formations, like little stars punctuating the twilight firmament. Alongside these small shapes, chalky white lines weave over the surface, creating the effect of giant chrysanthemums, blooming out from the centre of the painting. It is a combination of these geometric and gestural elements that works to animate the surface and the result is a finely tuned tension. JEMMA FIELD

Figure Falling from Chair oil on jute canvas, title inscribed, signed with artist’s initials PC and dated Oct & Nov 1450mm x 885mm
$20,000 - $30,000
Chairs, like other objects drawn from the domestic sphere, are found frequently in Clairmont’s painting. Because of family circumstances, he spent a lot of time confined inside houses he rented in Christchurch and later Wellington. Also, as a child he was in bed for long periods suffering from bronchial problems and it was then that he began drawing objects in his room while convalescing. Figure Falling from a Chair, though undated, relates to his imagery of the early 1970s when he fragmented his compositions under the influence of amphetamines and LSD. He deliberately sought a heightened form of sensory perception and the means to make it communicable through his paintings and prints. As his biographer, Martin Edmond, observes, he created a world “where everything seems on the verge of metamorphosis into something else”. The chair is in a state of movement and its pulsating patterns of yellow, blue and red give it an electrifying presence. This aggressive appearance is reinforced by the way it seems to engulf the fragmentary figure of the artist whose screaming features – shades of Francis Bacon – clutching fingers and outspread feet, seem cramped with pain, and which appears to be almost consumed by the chair rather than simply falling from it. Both seem bound together in a desperate embrace. Needless to say, Clairmont’s chair is not the traditional still life item found in ordered scenes of suburban life. Rather it has kinship with the terrifying object of torture on which Bacon’s Pope Innocent X sits wracked with pain, guilt and self-doubt. The chair becomes an instrument of self-mortification, a means of accessing ‘the tragic scale’ that Clairmont believed great art was about. It is well documented that Clairmont was heavily indebted to German Expressionist painters for his role models and was encouraged in that direction by one of his teachers at the Canterbury School of Art, Rudi Gopas. In this kind of art, the painter is an heroic figure, alone in his studio, forced to single-handedly source his work from self-knowledge and his emotional and intellectual experience of the world; his relationship with the world is that of an outsider, a visionary, one who must be prepared to pay the ultimate price for his convictions. Clairmont often meditated on death and suicide and, not unexpectedly, the electric chair – ‘old sparky’ as he called it – featured in his thoughts and imagery. It is to that idea of the chair that our thoughts turn in viewing Figure Falling from a Chair rather than to the yellow chair of Van Gogh often seen as one of Clairmont’s sources. Clairmont is a complex and individual painter whose art is sometimes unjustly seen in simplified terms. While it is a product of its time and reflects the era of hippies, psychedelic art and rock music like that of Jimi Hendrix; Clairmont’s painting has its own identity and tragic undertone. Forest and Bird
acrylic on canvas, title inscribed, signed and dated 2004 600mm x 400mm
$50,000 - $70,000
Bill Hammond’s Forest and Bird presents a portrait of an anthropomorphic figure in a side profile view. The sitter appears calm and poised as two birds protrude from the top and side of his bulbous head and another one from his chest. What could be a grotesque and disturbing painting is assuaged by the tranquil field of emerald green and the elegant specimens of flora and fauna that decorate the figure’s body. It is these ornithological creatures, each of which is often an amalgamation of human and bird, that have come to be distinguishing features of Hammond’s work. Silhouettes of two of these bird specimens with large angel wings are seen gliding up the side of the figure’s face, while the figure’s chest and the rest of his head are delicately etched with a selection of native New Zealand plants. To be sure, it is this aspect of the work to which the title refers, paying homage to the Royal Forest and Bird Protection Society of New Zealand, which works to protect the very species that so often are seen adorning the paintings of Bill Hammond. Portrait of Nigel Confronting the Future oil on canvas, dated Dunedin Sept ‘87 Alan Pearson was an artist in residence at Dunedin Public Art Gallery and Otago Polytechnic in 1986. He journeyed to the Otago heads and realised what our immigrant forebearers had to contend with in the new land in the southern oceans. The diseases contracted on board ship meant that many died at sea and on landing on shore. Headstones in the graveyard depicted tell this story. At the same time in Europe the Romantic era was in full swing so the mistiness of sea and sky and Nigel’s Byronic costume resonate with an atmosphere of adventure and the poetic nature of the struggle of those valiant early settlers. Just before leaving New Zealand to study, Intra generated what would prove to be his last works, a major series of paintings. With their white inscriptions on black grounds, these works played off McCahon’s late text paintings. But instead of conveying religious sentiment, they were littered with Artaudisms, schizophrenic footnotes, cryptic druggy neologisms, paranoid in-jokes, and anarchist slogans: “Columbianizacion”, “Panadology” and “Hollyweird”. Intra gathered small panels together in massive ensembles, regimented on base lines like city skylines, bar graphs, or books on shelves, as if to mock the very semblance of order and closure.
