INTRODUCTION Since the Fine Jewellery and Watches Department was established in 1976, Webb’s has distinguished itself as a mecca for desirable pieces that provide radiance and elegance for a legion of clients. Webb’s reputation for the consignment and sale of jewellery is unsurpassed in New Zealand. As market leaders, Webb’s sources the finest diamonds and jewels, premium watches and antiques from the world’s most sought-after makers. Our annual sales calendar showcases a wide selection of magnificent jewels and valuable watches and objects, for which Webb’s is renowned. A programme of at least six sales a year attracts a broad range of domestic and international buyers and sellers, and Webb’s stands alone among New Zealand auction houses in dedicating an entire day to the sale of fine jewellery. The Fine Jewellery and Watches Department offers a wealth of pan-industry expertise and experience. Peter Downey returned to the department in 2013, having previously headed the department in the early 1980s. As the department’s consultant and appraiser, he brings with him forty- five years of experience in the market. His is particularly interested in the art nouveau and art deco periods, as well as in the Castellani, Giuliano, Faberge and Cartier brands. Anna Carr, who heads the department, graduated in 2004 with a bachelor of design in contemporary jewellery (honours), she has exhibited nationally and internationally and is a practicing jeweller. Prior to working at Webb’s, Anna was the jewellery co-ordinator at Masterworks for four years. Katrina Sewell and Mandy Thorogood administer the department. During viewings, you will be greeted by Claire Evelyn, an antique and estate jewellery specialist, with over twenty years’ experience in the retail and secondary markets. Working alongside Claire is Kathryn Barcham, one of New Zealand’s most experienced gemmologists. Claire and Kathryn are here to assist you in making your decisions before bidding. This year, we farewell Anna as she goes on maternity leave. Replacing her Tam Fraser, who comes to us with over fifteen years of wholesale and retail experience in gemstones and jewellery. She has a background in jewellery design, and her pieces have sold in boutique stores throughout New Zealand. Tam has spent the last nine years as the sales and marketing manager, diamond grader and jewellery designer for New Zealand’s largest diamond company. She is trained in GIA and HRD diamond grading. Thirty-nine years after Peter Webb pioneered the business in 1976, it continues to evolve. At the beginning of this year, Webb’s moved from Manukau Road to a freshly renovated building on Falcon Street in Parnell. The Fine Jewellery and Watches Department’s May sale marks the first page of this new chapter of the department’s long history. Many changes have taken place over the past few months, but our future plans are strictly guided by the goals and aspirations upon which Webb’s was founded.

MARKET HIGHLIGHTS Tiffany & Co. Exhibition Tiffany & Co. jewels have frequently adorned the pages of Vogue Paris, captured through the lenses of the greatest photographers. These acclaimed photographs were displayed at the jeweller’s new premises at 62 Avenue des Champs-Elysées and reminded patrons of the classic-yeticonic designs from the American jeweller. Twenty prints were on display from 3 April to 26 April. Among the collection of prints displayed was one by Mario Sorrenti of Kate Moss adorned in a Tiffany & Co. pendant and diamond hoop earrings.
GIA: Dreams of Diamonds Exhibition In celebration of the book Dreams of Diamonds, the largest book ever published about diamonds, GIA is hosting a diamonds exhibit at their headquarters in Carlsbad, California. They will be showcasing twenty-five iconic diamond pieces containing more than 4000ct from seven prestige diamond houses, including Adler, Chatila, Chow Tai Fook, Diacore, Diarough, Mouawad, and Munnu the Gem Palace. Chatila will be lending a 54.29 ct yellow diamond necklace surrounded by diamonds of 67.1 ct. The book by British photography and design partners Alastair Laidlaw and Christine Marsden includes images of diamonds and diamond jewellery. The exhibit will run from 29 April to 11 May. Admission is free and open to the public; however, reservations are recommended.

Jane Dodd: Rococo Revolution After a very successful show in San Francisco earlier this year, New Zealand jeweller Jane Dodd brings back home Rococo Revolution to The National gallery in Christchurch. Inspired by late-Baroque aesthetic, Dodd carved bone and wood pieces to take the form of wearable objects, each representing symbolic elements drawn from nature. Although at first glance the connection between Rococo and Dodd’s pendants and brooches isn’t blatantly obvious, the jeweller’s use of animal and mineral materials echoes a Rococo sentiment. This mixture of materials, especially the use of wood, shell, stone, and pearl, has pushed her aesthetic in innovative directions that ultimately lead her to Rococo Revolution. Rococo Revolution will be exhibited from 21 April to 16 May.

FINE JEWELLERY & WATCHES
Baselworld 2015: Highlights While the Apple Watch took centre stage at the world’s largest watch and jewellery fair, Baselworld, many watch enthusiasts were comforted to see examples of traditional craftsmanship by the most celebrated watchmakers of all time. Breitling showcased their Galactic Unitime Sleek with an updated Chrono Worldtimer, whereas Patek Philippe unveiled their most popular collection in celebration of their 175th anniversary. Chopard revisited the regulator clock with its new L.U.C Regulator model in rose gold. The dial features a date window, a small seconds counter, and a power-reserve indicator. Ulysse Nardin revealed their ‘Hannibal’ watch featuring a combination of a minute repeater with a tourbillon. Meanwhile, Hermes enticed the ladies with their Slim D’Hermes Koma Kurabe watch featuring the art of Aka-e painting on the dials.
TEFAF Maastricht 2015: Highlights Early this year, The European Fine Arts Fair (TEFAF) in Maastricht, Netherlands, showcased a diverse collection of antique jewellery dating from classical antiquity to the 1950s. With a range of exhibitors, the fair attracted antiques and jewellery enthusiasts from all over the world and confirmed worldwide appreciation of antique art and jewels. One of the highlights of the fair was a rare Etruscan Revival fringe necklace adorned with small cave pearls by Carlo and Arthur Giuliano, circa 1880. The fine filigree and granulation work are a classic example of early Etruscan craftsmanship, a technique which Giuliano perfected. A striking aquamarine-and-diamond necklace by Olga Tritt was also on display exhibiting exceptional, rectangular-cut aquamarines that complement the geometrical designs of the Art Deco period. Also from this period was a multi-gem, enamel-and-diamond bracelet crafted by Boucheron in 1925. Inspired by oriental origins, the bracelet is set with articulated jasper panels, each with applied blue and black enamel blossom clusters. Art Nouveau jewellery was also on display, and among these was a bracelet by Rene Lalique. The moulded glass, enamel pearls, and sapphires demonstrate Lalique’s innovative artistry in jewellery design.

The Tom Mix & Victoria Forde Collection Tom Mix (1880-1940) was Hollywood’s first leading Western movie star and is considered to have defined the genre for all Western film actors who followed. At various times he was under contract with Selig, Fox, Film Booking Office, Universal, and Mascot. Tom’s repertoire extended beyond the screen to include the production, writing, and directing of hundreds of films during a 26-year career from 1909 to 1935. In 1918, Tom married fellow Western movie star Victoria Forde (his fourth wife). They had worked together on a number of films and began a love affair. Victoria starred in 170 films during her career and her jewellery collection at the time was second only to Cecil B. deMille. Mix and Forde had one daughter, Thomasina Mix, in 1922. Following the birth of their daughter, Victoria retired from the film industry. In 1940, Tom died tragically in an automobile accident. His estate was split between his wife at the time of his death, Mabel Hubble Ward, and Thomasina. The following nine lots are items of jewellery owned and worn by Victoria Forde during her time with Tom. They have been passed down Thomasina’s family through descent.

ANATOMY OF A DIAMOND A diamond is a type of crystallised carbon formed at extremely high temperatures and under immense pressure. This process, naturally occurring about 200 kilometres beneath the earth’s surface, produces one of the hardest and most precious of all known natural substances. No two diamonds are the same. A diamond’s worth and quality are determined by the Four Cs: a concept first introduced by De Beers in 1939.

FINE JEWELLERY & WATCHES
THE FOUR C’S CUT - COLOUR - CLARITY- CARET WEIGHT The Quality and Value of a Diamond is determined by the 4 C’s. Diamonds with the highest 4C ratios are the rarest and therefore the most valuable.
CUT
COLOUR
A diamond’s cut grade refers to the quality of the tiny surfaces, or facets, polished onto its surface. The facets, known as the crown, culet, table, girdle and pavilion, are arranged with precise mathematical proportions to maximise a diamond’s fire, life and brilliance. The cut, not to be confused with the shape, is the only element of the four Cs to be influenced by the human hand. Diamond cut grades range from ‘excellent’ and ‘very good’, to the midrange ‘good’ and low-end classifications of ‘fair’ and ‘poor’.
Ideally, a white diamond should have no colour at all – like a drop of spring water. Increasing degrees of body colour are measured on a scale ranging from no colour at all (D) to deeply coloured (Z). Beyond ‘Z’ is the range where the diamond’s colour is vivid and rich; these are called ‘fancy colours’. The differences between one shade and the next are very subtle, so grading is carried out under controlled lighting, using a master diamond sample set for comparison and accuracy. Natural diamonds also occur in shades of blue, green, yellow-orange, pink, red and even black. Known as ‘coloured fancies’, these stones are extremely rare and valuable. They are graded according to the intensity of their colour.
CLARITY Clarity refers to the presence of inclusions in a diamond. All diamonds contain imperfections. These are naturally occurring features – wisps of minerals, uncrystallised carbon and tiny fractures – formed deep within the diamond when it was first created. Most inclusions are not visible to the naked eye. The clarity of a diamond is graded by a gemmologist using 10X magnification. Clarity grades range from IF and FL (internally flawless and flawless) to I (included); also, grade may indicate whether the inclusion is near the centre of the stone or along its girdle or outer edge.

CARAT-WEIGHT Carat is the unit of weight for all gemstones. One carat is subdivided into 100 ‘points’. Therefore, a diamond measuring 75 points is three-quarters of a carat in weight or 0.75ct. There are five carats in a gram.

CO N DITI ON S OF S A L E FO R B U Y E R S 1. BIDDING. The highest bidder shall be the purchaser subject to the auctioneer having the right to refuse the bid of any person. Should any dispute arise as to the bidding the lot in dispute will be immediately put up for sale again at the preceding bid or the auctioneer may declare the purchaser which declaration shall be conclusive. No person shall advance less as a bid than the sum nominated by the auctioneer. A bid may be withdrawn before the auctioneer declares that bidding on a lot is closed.
B. To rescind the sale of that or any other lot sold to the purchaser at the same or any other auction.
2. RESERVES. All lots are sold subject to the right of the seller or his agent to impose a reserve.
C. To resell the lot by public or private sale. Any deficiency resulting from such resale, after giving credit to the purchaser for any part payment together with all costs incurred in connection with the lot, shall be paid to Webb’s by the purchaser. Any surplus over the proceeds of sale shall belong to the seller and in this condition the expression “proceeds of sale” shall have the same meaning in relation to a sale by private treaty as it has in relation to a sale by auction.
3. REGISTRATION. Purchasers shall complete a bidding card before the sale giving their own correct name address and telephone number. It is accepted by bidders that the supply of false information on a bidding card shall be interpreted as deliberate fraud.
D. To store the lot whether at Webb’s own premises or elsewhere at the sole expense of the purchaser and to release the lot only after the purchase price has been paid in full plus the accrued cost of removal storage and all other costs connected to the lot.
4. BUYERS’ PREMIUM. The purchaser accepts that Webb’s will apply a buyer’s premium which is charged in addition to the hammer price (unless otherwise stated) together with GST on the premium, which combined sum shall be the total purchase price. The rate of Buyers Premium is published in each catalogue online in conjunction with the catalogue.
E. To charge interest on the purchase price at a rate 2% above Webb’s bankers’ then current rate for commercial overdraft facilities to the extent that the price or any part of it remains unpaid for more than seven days from the date of the sale.
5. PAYMENT. Payment for all items purchased is due on the day of sale immediately following completion of the sale. If full payment cannot be made on the day of sale a deposit of 10% of the total sum due must be made on the day of sale and the balance must be paid, in clear funds, within 5 working days. Payment is by cash, bank (cashiers) cheque or Eftpos. Personal and private bank cheques will be accepted but must be cleared within 5 working days of completion of the sale. Credit cards are not accepted. 6. LOTS SOLD AS VIEWED. All lots are sold as viewed and with all errors to description faults and imperfections whether visible or not. Webb’s has used its skills and experience to ensure the genuineness or authenticity of each lot but, as it is impossible to provide conclusive proof of genuineness or authenticity for most items, buyers should proceed upon their own judgement. Buyers shall be deemed to have inspected the lots or to have made enquiries to their complete satisfaction prior to sale and by the act of bidding shall be deemed to be satisfied with the lots in all respects. 7. WEBB’S ACT AS AGENTS. They have full discretion to conduct all aspects of the sale and to withdraw any lot from the sale without giving any reason. 8. COLLECTION. Purchases are to be taken away at the buyer’s expense immediately after the sale once payment in full has been made. If this is not done, Webb’s will not be responsible if the lot is lost stolen damaged or destroyed. Any payment by cheque will not be considered paid until the payment has cleared. Any items not collected within seven days of the auction may be subject to a storage and insurance fee. A receipted invoice must be produced prior to delivery of any lot. 9. LICENCES. Buyers who purchase an item which falls within the provisions of the Antiquities Act 1975 or the Arms Act 1958 cannot take possession of that item until they have shown to Webb’s a license under the appropriate Act. 10. FAILURE TO MAKE PAYMENT. If a purchaser fails either to pay for or take away any lot Webb’s shall without further notice to the purchaser at its absolute discretion and without prejudice to any other rights or remedies it may have be entitled to exercise one or more of the following rights or remedies: A. To issue proceeding against the purchaser for damages for breach of contract.
F. To retain possession of that or any other lot purchased by the purchaser at that or any other auction and to release the same only after payment of money due. G. To apply the proceeds of sale of any lot then or subsequently due to the purchaser towards settlement of money due to Webb’s or it’s vendor. Webb’s shall be entitled to a possessory lien on any property of the purchaser for any purpose while any money remains unpaid under this contract. H. To apply any payment made by the purchaser to Webb’s towards any money owing to Webb’s in respect of anything whatsoever irrespective of any directive given in respect of or restriction placed upon such payment by the purchaser whether expressed or implied. I. Title and right of disposal of the goods shall not pass to the purchaser until payment has been made in full by cleared funds. Where any lot purchased in held by Webb’s pending i. clearance of funds by the purchaser or ii. completion of payment after receipt of a deposit the lot will be held by Webb’s as bailee for the vendor risk and title passing to the purchaser immediately upon notification of clearance of funds or upon completion of purchase. In the event that a lot is lost, stolen, damaged or destroyed before title is transferred to the purchaser, the purchaser shall be entitled to a refund of all monies paid to Webb’s in respect of that lot but shall not be entitled to any compensation for any consequent losses howsoever arising. 11. BIDDERS DEEMED PRINCIPALS. All bidders shall be held personally and solely liable for all obligations arising from any bid including both telephone and absentee bids. Any person wishing to bid as agent for a third party must obtain written authority to do so from Webb’s prior to bidding. 12.SUBJECT BIDS. Where the highest bid is below the reserve and the auctioneer declares a sale to be “subject to vendor’s consent” or words to that effect the highest bid remains binding upon the bidder until the vendor accepts or rejects it. If the bid is accepted there is a contractual obligation upon the bidder to pay for the lot. However a bid may be withdrawn by the highest bidder at any time before the vendor accepts the bid. Once accepted by the vendor a contract has been formed. 13. SALES POST AUCTION OR BY PRIVATE TREATY. The above conditions shall apply to all buyers of goods from Webb’s irrespective of the circumstances under which the sale is negotiated.

FINE JEWELLERY & WATCHES
IMP O RTA N T C ON DI T I O N S O F S A L E S Before the sale, all lots may be examined at the exhibition times specified in the catalogue. Interested persons including, without limitation, bidder’s representatives and auction agents, are understood to have examined all lots which they purchase and to accept their condition as they are at the moment of the fall of the auctioneer’s hammer, and not necessarily as they are described in any written material or oral communications. In placing bids, auction participants acknowledge that they have independently inspected and evaluated every lot they are bidding on. FINE JEWELLERY Independent Gemmological Reports and Valuations: Valuations are made available to Webb’s customers to provide an independent opinion as to the quality of the stones and metals comprising a piece, and so that buyers can obtain suitable insurance cover immediately upon purchase and prior to delivery. A valuation for insurance purposes represents a calculated replacement cost allowing for maximum retail margins, so that an insurer can assess the outer limit of their exposure to risk. It does not represent actual new retail replacement, as it makes no provision for competitive trade practice, or for discounts obtained by individual bargaining. Value estimates have been arrived at with the assistance of experts, tests and other methods which Webb’s has deemed in its sole discretion to be appropriate. Whilst Webb’s staff will assist buyers in understanding the methodology and technical details of Gemmological reports and valuations, all auction participants are responsible for reaching their own conclusions as to the value of lots prior to bidding. Webb’s, its consultants and employees make no representation or warranty regarding any opinion, valuation or certificate of any item on offer. Buyers should note the stated purpose of the valuation (insurance, retail market, cash value, estate division etc). Unless otherwise stated, all stones have been mounted when assessed for weight, colour or clarity, and the descriptions given in the catalogue or report are therefore limited in accuracy. Where an actual weight is given, the stone will have been weighed loose to minimise error margins. Nonetheless, the buyer accepts that all reports and descriptions remain opinions and not matters of fact.
w
WRIST & POCKET WATCHES Important Conditions of Sale for Watches: As many of the timepieces are old, or their history is unknown, Webb’s offers no guarantee as to the mechanical condition or condition of seals, etc. A timepiece described as ‘fine’ or ‘as new’ is an opinion relating to appearance only. All watches are sold as viewed. It shall be assumed that all buyers have inspected the lots and that they are happy with them in all respects. Watches cannot be returned on the grounds that repairs or service have been carried out, or parts (including straps or bracelets) have been supplied, by anyone other than the named maker. Notwithstanding the foregoing condition, named wristwatches are sold on the basis that the movement (or movement and case where both would normally have been manufactured by the named maker) were manufactured by the named maker. It is recommended that buyers have watches serviced promptly to ensure that damage does not arise from faulty seals or any other aspect of mechanical condition. THE RULE OF ‘CAVEAT EMPTOR’ APPLIES UNIVERSALLY TO ALL AUCTIONS. Webb’s acts as an agent only and all items are sold at auction together with any relevant reports and valuations. If these differ in any way from other reports or opinions on the same items, this will not be deemed as a reason for the cancellation of a sale. The rule of ‘Caveat Emptor’ applies universally to auctions. The buyer will be assumed to have examined the items and be satisfied about their authenticity and originality. Webb’s endeavours to describe all lots as accurately as possible but makes no guarantee as to the material content of items such as gold, silver, platinum, diamond, sapphire or any other material. By bidding at any of Webb’s auctions, buyers will be deemed to acknowledge this important condition and take full responsibility for their participation in any sale.
Vendor is from the trade and/or a party/entity associated with a Director of Peter Webb Galleries Limited.
