The Estate of Miss Crabb Essay By Selina Ershadi

1 Erica van Zon The Estate of Miss Crabb 2019 gouache on paper 250mm x 320mm est Webb's

$200 – $600 2019

Kristine Crabb opened the doors of her Ponsonby Road boutique and studio, eponymously named Miss Crabb, in 2004. Recognised as one of the most innovative and cultish fashion labels in Aotearoa, Miss Crabb became known for its refusal to conform to conventional beauty standards, and continuously challenged the hegemonic structures within the fashion industry. Miss Crabb itself transcends the term 'fashion label', rather it is a state of mind in which the wearer feels subversive, mythological and empowered. Kristine’s ultimate vision is to create something that gives people a sense of agency, freedom and pride in not only their bodies but their whole beings. Over the 15 years of the constantly evolving Miss Crabb project, Kristine has not only dressed countless local and international artists and musicians but has also pursued a diverse range of creative collaborations that have included working with Maiangi Waitai of Who is Dead Martin?, Erica van Zon, Richard Orjis, Pritika Lal and Bic Runga. Miss Crabb has also been a space that has supported and showcased many emerging designers, jewellery makers and artists. Before establishing Miss Crabb, Kristine had already formed a small cult following through her first store, Rip Shit and Bust, which she set up in 2001 on Karangahape Road. A hidden secret of the city, those lucky enough to stumble up the seemingly banal stairs on a then far more countercultural K Road discovered a store unlike most others of the time. Kristine’s willingness to experiment and her unique vision were apparent to anyone who experienced those early creations that combined a sense of youthful rebellion with a kind of ancient paganism. It was clear from this provocative debut that she was setting out to do something very different with clothing; something that blurred boundaries between categories such as high and low culture, good and bad taste, fashion and art. Kristine’s interest in blurring boundaries led organically to establishing a gallery in the corner window of the Miss Crabb store, called dep_art_ment, which began in 2005, only a year after Miss Crabb first opened its doors, showing the integral and fluid thread between Kristine’s own creative project and contemporary art. The window gallery was first curated by her long-time friend and collaborator Richard Orjis and featured works by contemporaries such as Fiona Connor, Kate Newby, Seung Yul Oh, Simon Denny and Tessa Laird. Fiona Connor famously replicated the Miss Crabb shop doors, which then went on 14

to become regularly installed within the store over the years, finding new places to rest against, constantly shifting like the store itself. Dep_art_ ment was later curated by Erica van Zon and then Morag Dempsey, and after a hiatus of a couple of years was reinstated in 2017 as Miss Department and curated by young local artist Anna Sisson. For 18 months the gallery featured a new generation of artists that included Prairie Hatchers-McGill, Gala Richards and Piripi Mackie. In its various forms, the gallery in the corner of the Miss Crabb storefront always sought to feature and support new artists, giving them the freedom to experiment outside the confines of a conventional white-walled gallery space, and served as a beautiful platform to both inform and inspire the local community. One could say that Kristine’s designs are irrational. Or perhaps a better way to describe her process would be anti-rational. If rational thought seeks singular truths and definitions through reason and logic then anti-rational thought resists such a linear and reductive process. This anti-rational approach, spurred on by intuition, experimentation and chance, opens up the designs so they are filled with contradictions and multiple interpretations. Anyone who has worn a Miss Crabb piece has discovered the multiplicity contained within its deceptive simplicity. Gertrude Stein once wisely advised that “a very important thing is not to make up your mind that you are any one thing.” This ontological openness that Stein encourages not only applies to the pieces created within the Miss Crabb project but also to Kristine herself. Kristine has always pursued intuition and experimentation as ways of unearthing and refining ideas. Sometimes an idea might start with a silhouette, a posture or a part of the body that she wants to emphasise or minimise. Having been pregnant for much of the early years of the Miss Crabb project, a question that arose for Kristine was how to create a sexy fluidity to wear during pregnancy and yet still be able to wear the same piece afterwards. Indeed many of her ideas have grown out of sculptural questions or problems. What happens when the corner of a huge square is chopped off? How does oversized bias-cut affect the fit and feel? And perhaps one of the most recurring questions throughout the entire Miss Crabb oeuvre has been how to make a piece both subversive and sexy at the same time. An anti-rational process that favours intuition and experimentation over hegemonic reason does not imply gratuity or a lack of Webb's

2019

intelligence. In fact, intelligence and efficiency underpin the entire Miss Crabb project. When constructing a piece, Kristine’s goal is to use all of the fabric so that none or very little is cut away, minimising waste, while still finding unique answers to her design questions in regards to movement, shape and feel. This “frugal” process, a word Kristine has often used to describe her method, has in fact led to refining the unique Miss Crabb aesthetic that plays with these boundaries between minimalism and romanticism, restraint and rebellion. This efficiency is also in keeping with the politics of the project, which has always sought to challenge the values inherent within a patriarchal capitalist society in which profit, acceleration and excess dominate. Despite the increasing economic pressures on production, all Miss Crabb pieces have been made here in Aotearoa. Miss Crabb has never obeyed the conventional fashion timelines in which a new season comes out every three months, instead new collections were released when the pieces were ready and the timing felt right. Miss Crabb even came up with its own sizing system that is far more fluid and inclusive, many of the pieces being one size – something that was incredibly rare in the local fashion industry when Kristine started pioneering this in the early 2000s. Over the last 15 years, Kristine has undertaken an attentive archiving project in which she has carefully collected and curated pieces from her entire oeuvre. The archive is a tactile timeline that tells the story of Kristine finding and refining her style. Looking at the collection as a whole, there are dramatic contrasts that represent Kristine’s experimental process with styles, colours, fabrics and production techniques. And yet it is clear that the constant themes of simplicity and complexity, minimalism and romance, fragility and strength, rebellion and restraint run throughout the entire body of work. These 40 examples in the auction are the last pieces that have been edited down from a 500-strong collection of what Kristine considers the most interesting garments created throughout the Miss Crabb project. The collection started out as a personal archive for Kristine; however, just as Miss Crabb evolved according to intuition over the years, the intention for the archive too has shifted, so that it is now lovingly dispersed amongst the many devotees of the Miss Crabb project.

Terms and Conditions The terms and conditions of sale listed here contain the policies of Webb’s Ltd. They are the terms on which Webb’s Ltd and the Seller contract with the Buyer. They may be amended by printed Saleroom Notices or oral announcements made before and during the sale. By bidding at auction you agree to be bound by these terms.

1. Background to the Terms used in these Conditions The conditions that are listed below contain terms that are used regularly and may need explanation. They are as follows: “the Buyer” means the person with the highest bid accepted by the Auctioneer. “the Lot” means any item depicted within the sale for auction and in particular the item or items described against any lot number in the catalogue. “the Hammer price” means the amount of the highest bid accepted by the auctioneer in relation to a lot. “the Buyer’s Premium” means the charge payable by the Buyer to the auction house as a percentage of the hammer price. “the Reserve” means the lowest amount at which Webb’s has agreed with the Seller that the lot can be sold. “Forgery” means an item constituting an imitation originally conceived and executed as a whole, with a fraudulent intention to deceive as to authorship, origin, age, period, culture or source, where the correct description as to such matters is not reflected by the description in the catalogue. Accordingly no lot shall be capable of being a forgery by reason of any damage or restoration work of any kind (Including re-painting). “the insured value” means the amount that Webb’s in its absolute discretion from time to time shall consider the value for which a lot should be covered for insurance (whether or not insurance is arranged by Webb’s). All values expressed in Webb’s Ltd catalogues (in any format) are in New Zealand Dollars (NZD$). All bids, “hammer price”, “reserves”, “Buyers Premium” and other expressions of value are understood by all parties to be in New Zealand Dollars (NZD$) unless otherwise specified. 2. Agent

Before the Sale

1. Examination of Property Prospective Buyers are strongly advised to examine in person any property in which they are interested before the Auction takes place. Neither Webb’s nor the Seller provides any guarantee in relation to the nature of the property apart from the Limited warranty in the paragraph below. The property is otherwise sold “AS IS” 2. Catalogue and Other Descriptions All statements by Webb’s in the catalogue entry for the property or in the condition report, or made orally or in writing elsewhere, are statements of opinion and are not to be relied upon as statements of fact. Such statements do not constitute a representation, warranty or assumption of liability by Webb’s of any kind. References in the catalogue entry to the condition report to damage or restoration are for guidance only and should be evaluated by personal inspection by the bidder or a knowledgeable representative. The absence of such a reference does not imply that an item is free from defects or restoration, nor does a reference to particular defects imply the absence of any others. Estimates of the selling price should not be relied on as a statement that this is the price at which the item will sell or it’s value for any other purpose. Neither Webb’s nor The Seller is responsible for any errors or omissions in the catalogue or any supplemental material. Images are measured height by width (sight size). Illustrations are provided only as a guide and should not be relied upon as a true representation of colour or condition. Images are not shown at a standard scale. Mention is rarely made of frames (which may be provided as supplementary images on the website) which do not form part of the lot as described in the printed catalogue. An item bought “on Extension” must be paid for in full before it will be released to the purchaser or his/her agreed expertising committee or specialist. Payments received for such items will be held “in trust” for up to 90 days or earlier, if the issue of authenticity has been resolved more quickly. Extensions must be requested before the auction. Foreign buyers should note that all transactions are in New Zealand Dollars so there may be a small exchange rate risk. The costs associated with acquiring a good opinion or

88

certificate will be carried by the purchaser. If the item turns out to be forged or otherwise incorrectly described, all reasonable costs will be borne by the vendor.

This deposit can be made using a credit card, however the balance of any purchase price in excess of $5,000 cannot be charged to this card without prior arrangement.

3. Buyers Responsibility All property is sold “as is” without representation or warranty of any kind by Webb’s or the Seller. Buyers are responsible for satisfying themselves concerning the condition of the property and the matters referred to in the catalogue by requesting a condition report.

This deposit is redeemable against any auction purchase and will be refunded in full if no purchases are made.

No lot to be rejected if, subsequent to the sale, it has been immersed in liquid or treated by any other process unless the Auctioneer’s permission to subject the lot to such immersion or treatment has first been obtained in writing. 4.

1. Refusal of Admission Webb’s reserves the right at our complete discretion to refuse admission to the auction premises or participation in any auction and to reject any bid. 2. Registration Before Bidding Any prospective new buyer must complete and sign a registration form and provide photo identification before bidding. Webb’s may request bank, trade or other financial references to substantiate this registration. 3. Bidding as a Principal When making a bid, a bidder is accepting personal liability to pay the purchase price including the buyer’s premium and all applicable taxes, plus all other applicable charges, unless it has been explicitly agreed in writing with Webb’s before the commencement of the sale that the bidder is acting as agent on behalf of an identified third party acceptable to Webb’s and that Webb’s will only look to the principal for payment. 4. International Registrations All International clients not known to Webb’s will be required to scan or fax through an accredited form of photo identification and pay a deposit at our discretion in cleared funds into Webb’s account at least 24 hours before the commencement of the auction. 5. Absentee Bids Webb’s will use reasonable efforts to execute written bids delivered to us AT LEAST 24 Hours before the sale for the convenience of those clients who are unable to attend the auction in person. If we receive identical written bids on a particular lot, and at the auction these are the highest bids on that lot, then the lot will be sold to the person whose written bid was received and accepted first. Execution of written bids is a free service undertaken subject to other commitments at the time of the sale and we do not accept liability for failing to execute a written bid or for errors or omissions which may arise. It is the bidder’s responsibility to check with Webb’s after the auction if they were successful. Unlimited or “Buy” bids will not be accepted. 6. Telephone Bids Priority will be given to overseas and bidders from other regions. Please refer to the catalogue for the Telephone Bids form. Arrangements for this service must be confirmed AT LEAST 24 HOURS PRIOR to the auction commencing. Webb’s accepts no responsibility whatsoever for any errors or failure to execute bids. In telephone bidding the buyer agrees to be bound by all terms and conditions listed here and accepts that Webb’s cannot be held responsible for any miscommunications in the process. The success of telephone bidding cannot be guaranteed due to circumstances that are unforeseen. Buyers should be aware of the risk and accept the consequences should contact be unsuccessful at the time of Auction. You must advise Webb’s of the lots in question and you will be assumed to be a buyer at the minimum price of 75% of estimate (i.e. reserve) for all such lots. Webb’s will advise Telephone Bidders who have registered at least 24 hours before the auction of any relevant changes to descriptions, withdrawals or any other sale room notices. 7. Online Bidding Webb’s offers an online bidding service. When bidding online the buyer agrees to be bound by all terms and conditions listed here by Webb’s.

Webb’s accepts no responsibility for any errors, failure to execute bids or any other miscommunications regarding this process. It is the online bidder’s responsibility to ensure the accuracy of the relevant information regarding bids, lot numbers and contact details. Webb’s does not charge for this service. 8. Reserves Unless otherwise indicated, all lots are offered subject to a reserve, which is the confidential minimum price below which the Lot will not be sold. The reserve will not exceed the low estimate printed in the catalogue. The auctioneer may open the bidding on any Lot below the reserve by placing a bid on behalf of the Seller. The auctioneer may continue to bid on behalf of seller up to the amount of the reserve, either by placing consecutive bids or by placing bids in response to other bidders. 9. Auctioneers Discretion The Auctioneer has the right at his/her absolute and sole discretion to refuse any bid, to advance the bidding in such a manner as he/she may decide, to withdraw or divide any lot, to combine any two or more lots and, in the case or error or dispute and whether during or after the sale, to determine the successful bidder, to continue the bidding, to cancel the sale or to reoffer and resell the item in dispute. If any dispute arises after the sale, then Webb’s sale record is conclusive. 10. Successful Bid and Passing of Risk Subject to the auctioneer’s discretion, the highest bidder accepted by the auctioneer will be the buyer and the striking of his hammer marks the acceptance of the highest bid and the conclusion of a contract for sale between the Seller and the Buyer. Risk and responsibility for the lot (including frames or glass where relevant) passes immediately to the Buyer. 11. The term “Author” or “authorship” refers to the creator of the property or to the period, culture, source, or origin as the case may be, with which the creation of such property is identified in the catalogue. The warranty is subject to the following: it does not apply where a) the catalogue description or saleroom notice corresponded to the generally accepted opinion of scholars and

experts at the date of the sale or fairly indicated that there was a conflict of opinions, or b) correct identification of a lot can be demonstrated only by means of a scientific process not generally accepted for use until after publication of the catalogue or a process which at the date of the publication of the catalogue was unreasonably expensive or impractical or likely to have caused damage to the property. the benefits of the warranty are not assignable and shall apply only to the original buyer of the lot as shown on the invoice originally issued by Webb’s when the lot was sold at Auction. the Original Buyer must have remained the owner of the lot without disposing of any interest in it to any third party. and clarity, similarly emeralds are frequently treated with oils or resin for the same purpose. Other treatments such as staining and dyeing, irradiation, filling or coating may have been used on other precious and semi-precious gemstones and organic material. These treatments may be permanent, whilst others may need special care to preserve their appearance. Buyers should assume that each lot has been subject to some form of treatment and that the estimates reflect this. A number of laboratories issue certificates that give detailed descriptions of gemstones, and in the event that Webb’s has been supplied with or obtained certificates for any lot, this shall be noted in the catalogue. However, as there may not be consensus between different laboratories on the degree, or types of treatment of the gemstones Webb’s supplies these without warranty. Pearls Pearls, like gemstones, can also be subjected to various treatments. Buyers should assume that any pearls sold by Webb’s may have been subjected to such treatments, and that the catalogue estimates reflect this. Watches Please note: All watches sold by Webb’s are sold on an “as is” basis. Webb’s makes no representation or warranty that any watch is in working order. Many watches have been repaired over their lifetime and may contain non-original parts. The absence of any reference to the condition of a watch does not imply that the lot is in good condition and without defects, repairs or restorations. Buyers should be aware that a general service charge for battery or further repair work, for which the Buyer is solely responsible, may be necessary. Estimated Weights If a stone has a known weight, it has been weighed out of the mount. If a stone has an estimated weight, it is an approximate weight only and has been measured by us in the mount and is a statement of opinion only. The information is given as a guide only and Buyers should satisfy themselves with regard to this information as to its accuracy.
