2014 FRANCES HODGKINS FELLOW Auckland artist Patrick Lundberg has headed to Dunedin for a year to take up the coveted position of Frances Hodgkins fellow for 2014. Lundberg will be afforded the opportunity to work full time on his art practice for the entire year. During the fellowship, Lundberg plans to continue the development of a series of works he began in early 2012. Of his intentions for the fellowship, he has stated that: “I usually work on several things at once – but in Dunedin I’m hoping to focus on one body of work, making paintings that I think of as games or instruments.” When: The fellowship runs for all of 2014 with an exhibition of the completed works scheduled for early 2015 Where: University of Otago, Dunedin

LEADING FEMINIST PRACTITIONER: ALEXIS HUNTER - OBITUARY Sadly, one of New Zealand’s foremost feminist artists, Alexis Hunter, passed away on 25 February, 2014. Auckland born, Hunter received her art training under the auspices of Colin McCahon at Elam in the late 1960s. Moving to London in 1972, Hunter began to produce conceptual works that focused on aspects of violence, sexuality, feminism and capitalism through film, photography and text. That same year, she joined the Artists Union Women’s

Workshop in London and became a leading figure in the women’s art movement. Her work has been exhibited around the world and is held in numerous collections worldwide. On the news of her death, Tate Britain erected a 10-day memorial to Hunter at the top of the montane staircase; they had bought a major piece of her work late last year. A comprehensive biography is being planned for publication in 2016.

LIGHTING UP THE AUCKLAND ART GALLERY: REVAMPED WORK BY JONATHAN JONES An untitled fluorescent light work by the Indigenous Australian artist Jonathan Jones (Kamilaroi/Wiradjuri) is currently lending a mesmerising glow to the North Atrium of Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tamaki. Inspired by Koori – the carved designs found on south-eastern Aboriginal shields – the work features more than 80 fluorescent battens, which Jones has organised into strict geometric patterns. Originally purchased by the Chartwell Collection of Contemporary Art in 2010, untitled (sum of the parts) has been reworked recently 4

and significantly up-scaled by Jones so that it fills the entire south wall of the atrium at an impressive 14.7 metres. Spotlighting contemporary Aboriginal art, Jones’ work is a fitting addition/start to the current exhibition My Country: Contemporary Art from Black Australia. Filling the large space of the atrium with a dramatic sweep of light and shadow that is readily seen from the street, untitled (sum of the parts) successfully grabs the attention of every passer-by. STILL MOVE: NEW WORK BY DANIEL CROOKS AT CHRISTCHURCH ART GALLERY New work by the celebrated Australian video artist Daniel Crooks is currently on show at Christchurch Art Gallery. Crooks uses a distinctive and highly idiosyncratic ‘time-slicing’ technique to bend, stretch and manipulate segments of time. The resultant images are startlingly beautiful and work to question our visual experience and our very comprehension of the medium of time. One of the

FINALISTS ANNOUNCED: THE WALTERS PRIZE 2014 The latest round of finalists for the coveted Walters Prize has been announced. This prize is an award “for an outstanding work of contemporary New Zealand art produced and exhibited during the past two years” and the jury has nominated pieces by Simon Denny, Maddie Leach, Luke Willis Thompson and Kalisolaite ’Uhila. The winner is set to collect $50,000. Where Auckland Art Gallery When 12 July – 12 October 2014

MOAMOA, the first survey exhibition of the work of Korean-New Zealand artist Sueng Yul Oh, is due to move to its second location and take up residence at City Gallery Wellington. The word ‘moamoa’ is Korean for ‘gather gather’ or ‘gather together’. The show is curated by Aaron Lister and Aaron Kreisler, and highlights the interactive and playful nature of much of Oh’s practise. A joint venture between Dunedin Art Gallery and City Gallery Wellington, MOAMOA looks to celebrate the last 10 years of Oh’s artistic practice. As such, the survey includes sculpture, performance, painting and video, as it pays homage to one of New Zealand’s young, but well-established and increasingly sought-after, artists to whom The Guardian UK recently referred as “one of the rising stars of the Asian art market”.

“IMPOLITE” YOUNG BRITISH ARTIST (YBA), SARAH LUCAS, REPRESENTS BRITAIN AT 2015 VENICE BIENNALE Sarah Lucas has been selected to represent Britain at next year’s Venice Biennale, following in the footsteps of her fellow YBA and former friend and business partner Tracey Emin. The artist is best known for her sexually explicit sculptures and assemblages using everyday materials such as tights, breezeblocks, foodstuffs, bananas and fried eggs. “Lucas’ work is impolite,” said British Council Director Andrea Rose, who will oversee the British pavilion. “Like Zest in the art world mix, her work will bring wit and savour to the Biennale.” Lucas was the 2011 Artist in Residence at Two Rooms gallery, Auckland, and her work featured in the 2011 Auckland Arts Festival. 6

YOKO ONO: HALF-A-WIND SHOW – A RETROSPECTIVE The Guggenheim Bilbao has mounted a unique retrospective of a living legend, Yoko Ono, who holds a special place in contemporary art, music and experimental film, in celebration of her octogenarian era. Viewers will encounter 200 artworks, representing over five decades of creativity from the mid-’50s to the present, from the multifaceted avant-garde universe of Yoko Ono. The heterogeneous shapes and mediums of her work challenge conventional ideas of art

and raise questions that are essential to human existence. This fascinating artistic journey delves into recurring themes that have driven her career, including her belief in the power of the imagination, her political commitment, her sense of the absurd, her sensitivity to global conflicts and the role of women in society. NEW CONTEMPORARY ART SALE AT CHRISTIE’S Loic Gouzer (right), a young contemporary art expert at Christie’s, remembers the moment during last November’s big sale when Apocalypse Now by Christopher Wool, referred to as the “essential image of our times”, sold for US$26.4 million, well above its highest estimate. “It was one of the first times a work from the 1980s sold for more than $20 million,” says Gouzer. “It broke the ice. Suddenly that painting became as important as a de Kooning.” Now, hoping to capitalize on a new booming market, Mr Gouzer is creating his own separate auction at Christies. Titled If I Live I’ll See You Tuesday, Gouzer’s auction will be filled with artworks that capture the raw angst intended to appeal to his generation of wealthy nascent collectors. Mr Gouzer has included around 30 handpicked artworks estimated to sell for total of nearly $70 million. As a way of shaking things up even more his auction will commence at 6pmjust one hour before Philip’s, a rival auction house, begins its evening contemporary sale. NEW YORK IN SPRINGTIME It is technically spring in New York and, therefore, open season for public art. The city’s parks are quickly filling with art as 11 outdoor exhibitions have opened in Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens. There is something for everyone in every area. Of particular note is Swiss-born, New York-based artist Olaf Breuning’s playful installation Clouds in Central Park, hovering some 35 feet above the entrance to the park. Like a child’s drawing of clouds made real, Breuning’s intervention manages to be at once endearing and absurd. Katharina Grosse has radically

jazzed up one of Brooklyn’s most drab plazas with Just the Two of Us (above), an explosively colourful installation of abstract objects coated with her trademark range of riotous hues and graffiti-like dribbles. Los Angeles-based artist Ed Rusha’s mural Honey, I Twisted Through More Damn Traffic Today, looms on the High Line at West 22nd Street, Manhattan, and makes for an appropriately Californian expression of road rage despite its bucolic setting. NEW YORK’S 9/11 MEMORIAL MUSEUM OPENS The National September 11 Memorial & Museum, which has been under construction on the site of the 2001 terrorist attacks, will open to the public on 21 May. The institution will open its doors to relatives, survivors, rescue workers and first responders, who will have exclusive access to the solemn site for 24 hours a day during a dedicated period from 15 to 20 May. “The museum is built on their incredible stories,” says Michael Bloomberg, New York’s former mayor and the memorial’s chairman. The 110,000-square-foot gallery spaces house thousands of objects pertaining to that day’s attacks, and many more artefacts are stored seven stories below ground level. While the recent March sale of Important Paintings & Contemporary Art contained a number of iconic pieces of New Zealand’s art history, the highlight of the auction was undoubtedly the sale of Colin McCahon’s cubist-inspired Kauri Trees, Titirangi (1955–1957). As one of the finest products of McCahon’s exploration of abstraction during the second half of the 1950s, Kauri Trees, Titirangi drew competitive bidding, pushing the sale price to an outstanding $412,000 – a value well within the top 2.8% of prices achieved by McCahon’s work on the secondary market to date. As the highest-value sale of any work in the March–April auction season, the sale of Kauri

Trees, Titirangi emphasised Webb’s preferential position in the market for major works by McCahon and increased our share of the artist’s top 10 prices on the New Zealand market to 81% by value. Further evidence of Webb’s ability to set new standards in key areas of market growth can be seen in the sale of Bill Hammond’s Cave Painting 5 (2008) for $82,000 – a smaller work from the series that also includes Hammond’s Farmer’s Market (2009), which sold for a record-breaking $328,300 in our last flagship sale. This was the highest price achieved for a living New Zealand artist in half a decade. Prominently featured in CATALOGUE 381

our March catalogue, this alluringly painted window into Hammond’s mythical universe drew heated bidding from a nucleus of collectors who had been waiting patiently for a work by Hammond of this quality and size to become available. The sale price generated by Cave Painting 5 was a new precedent for a domesticscale work and is yet another demonstration of the market’s belief in the cultural significance of his practice. Since its exhibition at the Peter McLeavey Gallery in the year that it was painted, Tony Fomison’s Mental Defective (1969) had been tucked away quietly in a private collection. Depicting the portrait of a sly, brooding personality, seemingly as malleable as is the jute canvas on which it is painted, Mental Defective is a handsome example of Fomison’s distinctive use of chiaroscuro to 12

render dark and sinister subjects – a technique developed as a result of his time in Europe between 1964 and 1967. Combined with the general scarcity of significant work by Fomison, the quality of this painting led to its sale price easily exceeding the high end of its pre-sale estimate. The sale price of $129,000 clearly positions the work within the top 1% of Fomison secondary-market results to date.

marks an important point in the formation of et al., the elusive collective of fictional pseudonyms that would go on to both win the Walters Prize in 2004 and spark outrage with its 2005 contribution to New Zealand’s presence at the Venice Biennale. This is, therefore, one of the most historically significant auctionbased sales of a contemporary New Zealand artwork to have taken place on our nation’s secondary market.

Another major achievement of the night was Webb’s placement of Lillian Budd’s Modern World (1992) for $50,000: a record-breaking auction price for the artist’s work. It was a pleasure to offer to collectors this historic piece of contemporary New Zealand installation art, which was first exhibited in the 1992 exhibition, Headlands: Thinking through New Zealand Art at Sydney’s Museum of Contemporary Art. Modern World

It will be of note to collectors and potential vendors alike that, in addition to Webb’s strong performance during the March–April period, solid results were achieved by auction houses across the country. The buying trends observed in the recent suite of auctions echoed those that defined the New Zealand market in 2013 – they saw an all-time record turnover of $20.3 million. While Webb’s results in the contemporary

sector developed significantly upon previously established benchmarks, it was the availability of a selection of major modernist paintings that drew the highest prices. McCahon was a particularly strong performer. The March–April season saw his practice deliver in excess of $1.0 million in sales. Considering that Webb’s share of 2013’s record $20.3-million turnover was a substantial $7.6 million – 25% ahead of our nearest competitor – and that the March sale engaged a high number of collectors with key works at substantial price points, Webb’s has a uniquely privileged position in the upcoming season. This sale presents an eclectic range of stunning contemporary jewellery, top-brand watches, exceptional pearls and gorgeous antique and vintage pieces: a diverse collection curated to delight. Our diamond section features a large, impressive, fancy yellowand-white-diamond cluster ring, boasting a 6.20ct exquisitely proportioned, radiant-cut natural yellow centre diamond, also featured is a magnificent solitaire princesscut diamond ring. Its significant 5.14ct centre diamond is G colour, SI1 clarity and of excellent make. Set in 18ct white gold, the broad shoulders are pave set with 64 round, modern, brilliant-cut diamonds . An intricate and feminine, diamond leaf motif bracelet is made up of an elaborate one thousand and fifty-six individually set diamonds; each alternating pear-shaped link is surrounded by 10, round, brilliant-cut diamonds with a further border of 22 round, brilliantcut diamonds, altogether creating an organic-style signature piece. Cup, is a definite highlight, as are our two Chronoswiss chronograph wristwatches: one a ‘Kairos’ steel and gold automatic, the other a multifunction, day, date and moon phase timepiece. The Cartier Tank is an absolute classic, first designed in 1917 and inspired by the WWI Renault tanks. We have three available in this sale: one in steel, one in 18ct gold and finally, the chronograph in a combination of steel and gold. In contemporary jewellery, we have a wonderful example of the renowned Swiss craftsmanship of Patek Philippe. Prime among these are Subject and Triangle, two works on paper by Michael Harrison. Harrison’s paintings are well known for their reverie; figures commonly have shapes removed from the surfaces of their faces, silhouettes make contact with one another and animals typically take the place of humans. For Subject, with the delicacy of a watercolour, Harrison has rendered in acrylic

several delicate gradient washes of a man’s face from multiple directions to produce a work that seems to have the temporality of a dream. More typical of the work for which Harrison is most known – and which is represented most often in collections of contemporary New Zealand art – Triangle contains the shapes of three cats cutting into a delicate gradient wash.

This A2 sale also includes two graphite-on-paper examples of Peter Stichbury’s exquisitely rendered investigations into the human face. Stichbury’s works often portray both real faces and imagined faces and, quite often, amalgams of both. In this instance, the A2 sale includes a large-scale drawing of a fittingly superficial-looking Paris Hilton, gripping a handbag-sized Chihuahua, and a more intimate, small-scale portrait of an unknown, perhaps imagined, young woman.

Two exceptional early works by Bill Hammond take prominent positions in the contemporary segment of the catalogue. Painted with oil on metal in 1986, Wake Up and Hard Work feature murky backgrounds, sanguine reds and contorted angular lines – components typical of Hammond’s early work. Other contemporary works of note in the auction include: a rare work from Seraphine Pick’s surrealist Bath Stack series, comprising various bath-tub forms floating in a dark field of tremulous, scratchy lines; Head Count 9, an oil-on-canvas painting from 1999 by Tony de Lautour; and a collection of sculptural pieces from et al.’s One-to-Many and Many-to-One

project at Khartoum Place for the 2010 iteration of the Auckland City Council’s Living Room event. The unique position in Peter Robinson’s career of Henry’s CockTail Sausage and Guston Head Totem makes this an opportunity to acquire two unusual pieces of New Zealand art history. Exhibited two years before his nomination for the Walters Prize in 2006 and four years before his win in 2008, these maniacal ink, gouache and Twink drawings are eminently collectable examples of the late image-making practice of a nowcentral figure in contemporary New Zealand sculpture. A major component of the sale is a fine selection of works by some of New Zealand’s most renowned modernists. Pat Hanly is particularly well represented among these by Life Goes On, a work on paper from his coveted Golden Age series – one of the finest works from this period to become available in recent memory. Lot 25, Ralph Hotere – Le Pape est Morte, estimate $8,000 – $12,000

assistance from his son 10 years after his retirement in 1994. Titled Bride and Groom and Vacation, these rare pieces of Hanly’s practice carry his characteristically optimist palette and lively combinations of abstraction and figuration. As such they represent a rare opportunity for collectors of Hanly’s work. A work on paper by Ralph Hotere from 1982 is also included in this A2 sale. The word ‘Mungo’ is inscribed in blood-red acrylic paint above the top of a group of schematised markings – a reference to Lake Mungo in New South Wales, Australia, where, in 1969, the 68,000-year-old cremated remains of an anatomically modern human were found. The work included in this auction is likely a preparatory drawing for the powerful series of Mungo paintings spawned the year after his visit to Lake Mungo in 1982. Also included is Le Pape Est Mort (The Pope is Dead), a text-based work on paper made by Hotere in 1978 – the year in which his scholarship-awarded

time in Europe coincided with the papacy passing between three different popes. This season’s catalogue also contains a fine selection of modestly sized works by some of New Zealand’s most renowned photographers. Two photographs taken by Brian Brake in 1957 document his time as one of the only Western photographers given access to China before the relaxation of its isolationist policies. Also included are: a group of photographs by Peter Peryer, one of which captures a portrait of Christchurch-based painter Christine Mathieson during her time at the Elam School of Fine Arts; one of Marti Friedlander’s famous photographs of Rita Angus from 1968; and Oracle No. 2, an intimately composed image by Fiona Pardington of an elderly woman peering through the darkness formed between her withered hands.

CONDITIONS OF SALE FOR BUYERS 1. Bidding. The highest bidder shall be the purchaser subject to the auctioneer having the right to refuse the bid of any person. Should any dispute arise as to the bidding, the lot in dispute will be immediately put up for sale again at the preceding bid, or the auctioneer may declare the purchaser, which declaration shall be conclusive. No person shall advance less at a bid than the sum nominated by the auctioneer, and no bid may be retracted. 2. Reserves. All lots are sold subject to the right of the seller or her/ his agent to impose a reserve. 3. Registration. Purchasers shall complete a bidding card before the sale giving their own correct name, address and telephone number. It is accepted by bidders that the supply of false information on a bidding card shall be interpreted as deliberate fraud. 4. Buyer’s Premium. Payment. Payment for all items purchased is due on the day of sale immediately following completion of the sale. If full payment cannot be made on the day of sale a deposit of 10% of the total sum due must be made on the day of sale and the balance must be paid within 5 working days. Payment is by cash, bank cheque or Eftpos. Personal and private cheques will be accepted but must be cleared before goods will be released. Credit cards are not accepted. 6. Lots sold as Viewed. All lots are sold as viewed and with all errors in description, faults and imperfections whether visible or not. Neither Webb’s nor its vendor are responsible for errors in description or for the genuineness or authenticity of any lot or for any fault or defect in it. No warranty whatsoever is made. Buyers proceed upon their own judgement. Buyers shall be deemed to have inspected the lots, or to have made enquiries to their complete satisfaction, prior to sale and by the act of bidding shall be deemed to be satisfied with the lots in all respects. 7. Webb’s Act as Agents. They have full discretion to conduct all aspects of the sale and to withdraw any lot from the sale without giving any reason. 8. Collection. Purchases are to be taken away at the buyer’s expense immediately after the sale except where a cheque remains uncleared. If this is not done Webb’s will not be responsible if the lot is lost, stolen, damaged or destroyed. Any items not collected within seven days of the auction may be subject to a storage and insurance fee. A receipted invoice must be produced prior to removal of any lot. 9. Licences. Buyers who purchase an item which falls within the provisions of the Protected Objects Act 1975 or the Arms Act 1958 cannot take possession of that item until they have shown to Webb’s a license under the appropriate Act. 10. Failure to make Payment. If a purchaser fails either to pay for or take away any lot, Webb’s shall without further notice to the purchaser, at its absolute discretion and without prejudice to any other rights or remedies it may have, be entitled to exercise one or more of the following rights or remedies: A. To issue proceeding against the purchaser for damages for breach of contract.

C. To resell the lot by public or private sale. Any deficiency resulting from such resale, after giving credit to the purchaser for any part payment, together with all costs incurred in connection with the lot shall be paid to Webb’s by the purchaser. Any surplus over the proceeds of sale shall belong to the seller and in this condition the expression ‘proceeds of sale’ shall have the same meaning in relation to a sale by private treaty as it has in relation to a sale by auction. D. To store the lot whether at Webb’s own premises or elsewhere at the sole expense of the purchaser and to release the lot only after the purchase price has been paid in full plus the accrued cost of removal storage and all other costs connected to the lot. E. To charge interest on the purchase price at a rate 2% above Webb’s bankers’ then current rate for commercial overdraft facilities, to the extent that the price or any part of it remains unpaid for more than seven days from the date of the sale. F. To retain possession of that or any other lot purchased by the purchaser at that or any other auction and to release the same only after payment of money due. G. To apply the proceeds of sale of any lot then or subsequently due to the purchaser towards settlement of money due to Webb’s or its vendor. Webb’s shall be entitled to a possessory lien on any property of the purchaser for any purpose while any monies remain unpaid under this contract. H. To apply any payment made by the purchaser to Webb’s towards any money owing to Webb’s in respect of any thing whatsoever irrespective of any directive given in respect of, or restriction placed upon, such payment by the purchaser whether expressed or implied. I. Title and right of disposal of the goods shall not pass to the purchaser until payment has been made in full by cleared funds. Where any lot purchased is held by Webb’s pending i. clearance of funds by the purchaser or ii. completion of payment after receipt of a deposit, the lot will be held by Webb’s as bailee for the vendor, risk and title passing to the purchaser immediately upon notification of clearance of funds or upon completion of purchase. In the event that a lot is lost, stolen, damaged or destroyed before title is transferred to the purchaser, the purchaser shall be entitled to a refund of all monies paid to Webb’s in respect of that lot, but shall not be entitled to any compensation for any consequent losses howsoever arising. 11. Bidders deemed Principals. All bidders shall be held personally and solely liable for all obligations arising from any bid, including both ‘telephone’ and ‘absentee’ bids. Any person wishing to bid as agent for a third party must obtain written authority to do so from Webb’s prior to bidding. 12. ‘Subject Bids’. Where the highest bid is below the reserve and the auctioneer declares a sale to be ‘subject to vendor’s consent’ or words to that effect, the highest bid remains binding upon the bidder until the vendor accepts or rejects it. If the bid is accepted there is a contractual obligation upon the bidder to pay for the lot. 13. SALES POST AUCTION OR BY PRIVATE TREATY. The above conditions shall apply to all buyers of goods from Webb’s irrespective of the circumstances under which the sale is negotiated. 14. Condition of Items. Condition of items is not detailed in this catalogue. Buyers must satisfy themselves as to the condition of lots they bid on and should refer to clause six. Webb’s are pleased to provide intending buyers with condition reports on any lots.

SIMON BOWERBANK

Fine Art Specialist Just two weeks ago, Simon Bowerbank moved to Webb’s Fine Art department from a previous position managing Karangahape Road’s Ivan Anthony Gallery – a position he held after finishing his postgraduate studies in Art History at The University of Auckland. Of his time working at the gallery, Simon says: “I am very lucky to have been given the opportunity to work alongside Ivan for the past four years. I am convinced that it was the best-possible apprenticeship for learning the intricacies of New Zealand’s commercial art world.” Simon’s qualifications in Fine Arts and Art History have equipped him with an 128

insider’s grasp of art-making and thinking as well as the scholarly overview of an art historian. “The fast-moving nature of the auction business has been a refreshing change of pace. I am enjoying being able to handle high volumes of art every day. It allows me to really get to know the practices of artists in a way that would otherwise be unavailable to me.” Also an independent curator, Simon intermittently brings together exhibitions of digital media and time-based works and, in his continuing capacity as a studio manager, regularly organises participation in international art fairs. “The connections and subtle causes of influence between

the primary and secondary art markets have always been an area of interest for me. Having worked for some time in the primary market, I am looking forward to spending time on the other side of the fence.” A large part of Simon’s day-to-day work at Webb’s involves undertaking research for auction catalogues, providing appraisals for consignments and procuring items for future sales. He is always happy to lend his keen eye to clients in order to advise them on acquisitions, or to discuss the market value and suitability for auction of works from their collections.
