The auction house described the privately owned diamond as a “sensational stone”, adding that “the combination of its size, natural origin, hue, and saturated colour makes it an extremely unusual occurrence”. This sale presents an eclectic range of stunning contemporary jewellery, top-brand watches, exceptional pearls and gorgeous antique and vintage pieces: a diverse collection curated to delight. Our diamond section features a large, impressive, fancy yellowand-white-diamond cluster ring, boasting a 6.20ct exquisitely proportioned, radiant-cut natural yellow centre diamond, also featured is a magnificent solitaire princesscut diamond ring. Its significant 5.14ct centre diamond is G colour, SI1 clarity and of excellent make. Set in 18ct white gold, the broad shoulders are pave set with 64 round, modern, brilliant-cut diamonds . An intricate and feminine, diamond leaf motif bracelet is made up of an elaborate one thousand and fifty-six individually set diamonds; each alternating pear-shaped link is surrounded by 10, round, brilliant-cut diamonds with a further border of 22 round, brilliantcut diamonds, altogether creating an organic-style signature piece. And finally, a late art-deco platinum and diamond double clip brooch is included in the offering. Echoing a decadent past, this rare example is designed as a stylised pair of angel wings in ribbon form, and is set with pave round brilliant cut diamonds and channel-set baguettes. Engineered for versatility, it can be disassembled from its brooch form to become a useful clip. Watches, again, are well represented by a diverse range of top luxury brands such as Jaeger, Franck Muller, Longines, Rolex, Cartier, Louis Vuitton and Baume & Mercier to name just a few. IN REVIEW: A REPORT ON THE MARCH AUCTION OF
Important Paintings & Contemporary Art Webb’s first flagship catalogue of 2014 was a focused offering that engaged with key formative moments in New Zealand’s art-historical narrative. The sale produced the highest price of the March–April auction season with the figure of $412,000 achieved for Colin McCahon’s pivotal painting entitled Kauri Trees, Titirangi. Further top-performing lots broke new ground in the burgeoning modern and contemporary markets.
The highlight of our March auction of Important Paintings & Contemporary Art was undoubtedly the sale of Colin McCahon’s cubist-inspired Kauri Trees, Titirangi. As one of the finest products of McCahon’s exploration of abstraction during the second half of the 1950s, Kauri Trees, Titirangi drew competitive bidding, pushing the sale price to an outstanding $412,000 – a value well within the top 2.8% of prices achieved by McCahon’s work on the secondary market to date. Further evidence of Webb’s ability to set new standards in key areas of market growth can be seen in the sale of Bill Hammond’s Cave Painting 5 for $82,000 – a smaller work from the series that also includes Hammond’s Farmer’s Market, which sold for a record-breaking $328,300. This alluringly painted window into Hammond’s mythical universe drew heated bidding from collectors who had been waiting patiently for a Hammond of this quality and size to become available. Since it was first exhibited in 1969, Tony Fomison’s Mental Defective had been tucked away quietly in a private collection. Depicting the portrait of a sly, brooding personality, Mental Defective is a handsome example of Fomison’s distinctive use of chiaroscuro to render dark and sinister subjects. Combined with the general scarcity of significant work by Fomison, the quality of this painting
led to a sale price of $129,000, easily positioning the work within the top 1% of Fomison secondary-market results to date. Another major achievement of the night was Webb’s placement of Lillian Budd’s Modern World for $50,000: a record-breaking auction price for the artist’s work. This historic piece of installation art was first exhibited in the 1992 exhibition, Headlands: Thinking through New Zealand Art at Sydney’s MCA. Modern World marks an important point in the formation of et al., the elusive collective of fictional pseudonyms that would go on to both win the Walters Prize in 2004 and spark outrage with its 2005 contribution to New Zealand’s presence at the Venice Biennale. Entries are now invited for the next auction of Important Paintings & Contemporary Art, which is due to be held in July. We encourage you to make contact with us for a no-obligation appraisal. Webb’s ground-breaking sales of Hammond’s Farmer’s Market in September and McCahon’s Kauri Trees, Titirangi in March attest to our unrivalled ability to consistently generate New Zealand’s highest auction prices.

WEBB’S
IMPORTANT CONDITIONS OF SALES Before the sale, all lots may be examined at the exhibition times specified in the catalogue. Interested persons including, without limitation, bidder’s representatives and auction agents, are understood to have examined all lots which they purchase and to accept their condition as they are at the moment of the fall of the auctioneer’s hammer, and not necessarily as they are described in any written material or oral communications. In placing bids, auction participants acknowledge that they have independently inspected and evaluated every lot they are bidding on. FINE JEWELLERY Independent Gemmological Reports and Valuations: Valuations are made available to Webb’s customers to provide an independent opinion as to the quality of the stones and metals comprising a piece, and so that buyers can obtain suitable insurance cover immediately upon purchase and prior to delivery. A valuation for insurance purposes represents a calculated replacement cost allowing for maximum retail margins, so that an insurer can assess the outer limit of their exposure to risk. It does not represent actual new retail replacement, as it makes no provision for competitive trade practice, or for discounts obtained by individual bargaining. Value estimates have been arrived at with the assistance of experts, tests and other methods which Webb’s has deemed in its sole discretion to be appropriate. Whilst Webb’s staff will assist buyers in understanding the methodology and technical details of Gemmological reports and valuations, all auction participants are responsible for reaching their own conclusions as to the value of lots prior to bidding. Webb’s, its consultants and employees make no representation or warranty regarding any opinion, valuation or certificate of any item on offer. Buyers should note the stated purpose of the valuation (insurance, retail market, cash value, estate division etc).
Unless otherwise stated, all stones have been mounted when assessed for weight, colour or clarity, and the descriptions given in the catalogue or report are therefore limited in accuracy. Where an actual weight is given, the stone will have been weighed loose to minimise error margins. Nonetheless, the buyer accepts that all reports and descriptions remain opinions and not matters of fact. JEWELS Buy/Sell/Collect An exceptional offering of antique and desirable modern pieces, amongst which are diamond rings, heavy gold chains, several gold wrist and pocket watches, diamond and precious stone rings, earrings, heavy silver chains, rock-crystal beads, lockets, pendants, 19th-century paste set jewellery and many other items of interest, mostly without reserve. WRIST & POCKET WATCHES Important Conditions of Sale for Watches: As many of the timepieces are old, or their history is unknown, Webb’s offers no guarantee as to the mechanical condition or condition of seals, etc. A timepiece described as ‘fine’ or ‘as new’ is an opinion relating to appearance only. All watches are sold as viewed. It shall be assumed that all buyers have inspected the lots and that they are happy with them in all respects. Watches cannot be returned on the grounds that repairs or service have been carried out, or parts (including straps or bracelets) have been supplied, by anyone other than the named maker. Notwithstanding the foregoing condition, named wristwatches are sold on the basis that the movement (or movement and case where both would normally have been manufactured by the named maker) were manufactured by the named maker. It is recommended that buyers have watches serviced promptly to ensure that damage does not arise from faulty seals or any other aspect of mechanical condition.
