FINE JEWELLERY & WATCHES
MARKET HIGHLIGHTS. HONG KONG WELCOMES THE WORLDS JEWELLERY INDUSTRY
AGATHA CHRISTIE’S MYSTERIOUS JEWELLERY TREASURES An old strongbox has been opened only to discover gold sovereigns; a three stone brilliant-cut diamond ring and a diamond brooch believed have formed part of the inheritance for the celebrated English crime novelist Agatha Christie and her sister Madge. It began more than 4 years ago with a fan of the late author who purchased an old battered, brown suitcase for 100pounds at an auction sale in Agatha Christie’s former Devon residence. The suitcase contained an unexpected wealth of hidden treasures mentioned in the author’s biography as “mother’s valuable jewellery” that had always remained missing.
Considered a must see on the jewellery calendar, the annual industry event attracts over 52,000 buyers from more than 48 counties to Asia’s showcase for jewellery, pearls, diamonds, gemstones, equipment and services. The September Fair is regarded as the world’s number one fine jewellery event spanning two world-class venues over eight days with a global range of manufacturers, wholesalers, retailers, importers, exporters and designers in attendance, the world’s biggest diamond pavilion, Asia’s largest gem marketplace and Hong Kong’s largest showcase of jewellery. When 15 -19 (AsiaWorld Expo) & 17 - 21 (Exhibition Centre) September 2014 Where AsiaWorld-Expo + Hong Kong Convention & Exhibition Centre , Lantau Island, Hong Kong

BIENNALE DES ANTIQUAIRES Held every two years in Paris’ historic Grand Palais, the Biennale des Antiquaires is undoubtedly the most significant event in the jewellery calendar, showcasing the world’s coveted jewels and luxury brands to more than 80,000 visitors from across the globe. The Biennale was born of a dream “to create an event where the beauty of the objects displayed would rival that of the women who would visit the exhibition,” which it successfully continues to achieve today with unique exhibits and specially curated collections of fine arts, antiques and collectibles of a cultural institutional standard from the likes of Cartier, Boucheron, Van Cleef & Arpels, and Chopard. When 11 September – 21 September 2014 Where Grand Palais, Paris, France
RED DIAMONDS SHINE IN SYDNEY Four extremely rare “red” diamonds (estimated to be worth more than 50 times the price per carat of white diamonds) have been unveiled in Sydney as a part of an annual sale. Found mostly in Africa, Australia and Brazil, true red diamonds are so rare that it is estimated no more than 20-30 are known to exist. The jewels regularly fetch US$1-2 million per carat and these stones sourced from Rio Tino’s Argyle mine in Western Australia will form part of a tender of 55 diamonds, including 51 pink and purplish reds and four fancy reds.
THE APPLE IWATCH Will Apple’s much-anticipated wearable device dubbed the iWatch pose a direct threat to luxury watchmakers and disrupt the tradition-focused industry? According to the Zurich based independent research company Smartwatch Group, the answer is a resounding yes. “In 2020 we expect 60 percent of all watches sold in the world to be connected with the Internet,” predicts Pascal Koenig of Smartwatch Group, which only seems reasonable given the industry estimates of US$2.5 billion worth of global smartwatch sales in 2014. Amid recent moves by Apple to patent a new device called “iTime”, the tech giant has recruited executives from several fashion and luxury brands including watchmaker
Tag Heuer’s vice president of sales and retail -Patrick Pruniaux. On announcing the departure of Pruniaux’s on CNBC, Jean-Claude Biver who heads the business LVMH conglomerate, of which Tag Heuer is a subsidiary, suggested to “Swiss watchmakers should keep an eye on Apple as a notable competitor.”
THE WORLDS MOST EXPENSIVE WATCH? Miami collector & dealer Matthew Bain has listed online what is believed to be the most expensive watch for public sale. With an asking price of US$3.2 million, it’s the extremely rare Patek Philippe Perpetual Calendar Chronograph Reference 2499 in 18K Rose Gold. This vintage watch is in mint condition from a series that began in the 1950’s and is considered to be the best design of all four for this reference, which was produced right up to the 1980s. Although the 2499 was made for a 35 year period, just 349 pieces were ever produced, with a majority of them being produced in yellow gold. However, the rose-gold 2499 is considered to be unbelievably rare with experts believing there are less than 10 known examples in existence. CATALOGUE 389

WEBB’S
The Webb’s Jewellery team presents our spring sale of Fine Jewellery & Watches, to be held at 11.00am on Saturday 27 September. It will offer a superb selection of antique jewellery, premium-brand watches, statement pearls and contemporary jewellery.
In the antique section, we have a full, matching set of lava stone cherub cameo jewellery. Included is a brooch and earring set from circa 1865, which comprises hand-carved, winged cherubs in coloured lava stone, set in gold rub-over mounts.
Lot 71. A very fine bright emerald and diamond cluster ring. Estimate $25,000 - $35,000
We also have a noteworthy collection of antique Malay and Chinese jewellery, which is very rarely seen on the secondary market in New Zealand. Included in this collection is a 19thcentury kerosang (set of brooches) created by Straits-born Chinese silversmiths. The owner was informed that these items, which are known together as ibu and anak (mother and child), came from a Malay palace in Eastern Malaysia. Because of the intricate nature of the reverse side of the ibu brooch, these may have been made for a young princess. The sale includes a significant offering of emerald jewellery with a strong emphasis on size. Highlights of this group include an impressive oval, emerald-and-diamond ring with a natural emerald of 20.57ct set in 18.00ct white gold and pave-set diamonds, as well as a striking pair of emerald-and-diamond drop earrings that feature long-cut emerald stones of 12.22ct and 11.51ct alongside round, brilliant-cut and baguette-cut diamonds.
Also featured are pieces of stunning diamond jewellery spanning a variety of periods and styles, including rings, bracelets, earrings and necklaces of varying carats, clarity and colours at a wide range of price points. Of note is a stunning, large, 3.17ct, round, brilliant-cut diamond ring set in 18.00ct yellow gold, of colour H and clarity SI2. Objects of virtu are also part of the sale, including a Victor Mayer, Fabergé Co, New York, polar bear egg, released in 2008. This jewelled egg is designed in gold and platinum with transparent-blue enamel over a guilloche-patterned ground of snowflakes. The egg opens to reveal a bear with cubs on a rock-crystal ice flow. We are excited to have works by contemporary jewellers Warwick Freeman, Guenter Taemmler and Christine Hafermalz-Wheeler included in this sale. Warwick Freeman has a necklace and pair of earrings that are both original 1980s’ pieces purchased from Fingers gallery; they were produced during the important Bone Stone Shell movement. Warwick Freeman is arguably one of the most influential jewellers in New Zealand and has a strong following nationally and internationally. Freeman’s jewellery is highly collectable and very rarely seen on the secondary market.
Lot 66. A good large solitaire diamond ring. Estimate $35,000 - $45,000
Lot 70. A fine quality Victor Mayer Faberge Co New York Polar Bear Egg, 2008. Estimate $40,000 - $50,000
For buyers of collectable timepieces, the watches section includes an eclectic collection of premium-brand names such as Rolex, Chopard, Cartier, Longines and Omega. The ever-popular Jewels: Buy/ Sell/Collect auction at 2.30pm will conclude Saturday’s suite of sales with an extensive range of vintage, retro and contemporary jewellery. We look forward to welcoming you once again to another day of spectacular sales, which offers excellent opportunities for buyers with an interest in fine, quality design and unique, pre-owned period jewellery, stones and objects of virtu. CATALOGUE 389
WEBB’S
At over 360 lots, our final A2 sale for 2014 is impressive in both its breadth and depth, and traverses contemporary, modern & historical New Zealand practice. The offering ranges from perennially popular graphic editions, such as Swoop of the Kotare by Don Binney and Glister by Peter Stichbury to one of John Ward Knox’s delicate oil paintings on calico.
Charles Ninow Webb’s Fine Art Senior Specialist
Contemporary New Zealand art from recent years is well represented in this catalogue. A highlight is undoubtedly John Ward Knox’s untitled work on stretched calico, which explores the traditions of both realist and minimalist painting practice. In the centre of the work, a young, reclining child is described in an area of monochromatic paintwork. An untitled collage on Perspex by Peter Madden will also be presented. In this work, images of various mammals, birds and insects envelope the smooth silhouette of a piece of modernist furniture, quite literally contrasting human-made forms with those of the natural world. The sale also includes an expansive component of both contemporary New Zealand photography and photographs from the 70s and 80s. Included are works by Richard Orjis, Ronnie Van Hout, Fiona Pardington, Marie Shannon, Peter Peryer, Brian Brake, Marti Friedlander and Gavin Hipkins. It is interesting to note that while they are some of the rarer, lesser-known images from the series, two of the included works by Peter Peryer are from the artist’s critically acclaimed photo-essay Gone Home of 1976. Another work that is interesting to consider in relation to Peryer’s ouvre is Ronnie Van Hout’s After Peryer, which is based on Peryer’s 1994 photograph Doodlebug. After Peryer has been widely exhibited and, perhaps most recently, the image was included in Unnerved: The New Zealand Project at Queensland Gallery of Modern Art, Australia in 2010. A traditionally celebrated aspect of the A2 sale-category is its strong selection of graphic editions by leading New Zealand modernists. True-to-form, this catalogue presents an array of graphic editions by canonical practitioners such as Pat Hanly, Don Binney, Gordon Walters, Robin White, Ralph Hotere, Colin McCahon, Jeffrey Harris, Peter Siddell & Nigel Brown. Included among these are highly-prized examples such as Gordon Walter’s Arahura, Robin White’s Florence at Harbour Cone and Pat Hanly’s Figure in Light, which
was made in 1968—earlier than the majority of Hanly graphics presented to the market—and is from an edition of only 10. The sale will also feature a large 1977 work on board by modernist Buck Nin. Like Paratene Matchitt, Buck Nin was a Maori painter who practiced with modernist ethos: he combined traditional Maori patterns and imagery with depictions of his native land and people and imbued his subject matter with smooth, subtly graduated colour and hard, crisp edges. Artists like Nin & Matchitt have long been undervalued by the auction market; however, in Webb’s last A2 sale—held in May this year—a work on paper by Matchitt, Au Au Aue Ha!!!, improved on its low estimate by 283% when, after a heated bidding war, it was purchased by Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tamaki for $9,775 (incl. bp)—a new record for work of its type. One would hope that the exceptional result is a sign of a growing appreciation of painters like Matchitt and Nin, who are a vital part of our nation’s cultural history.

ANATOMY OF A DIAMOND FINE JEWELLERY & WATCHES
A diamond is a type of crystallised carbon formed at extremely high temperatures and under immense pressure. This process, naturally occurring about 200 kilometres beneath the earth’s surface, produces one of the hardest and most precious of all known natural substances. No two diamonds are the same. A diamond’s worth and quality are determined by the Four Cs: a concept first introduced by De Beers in 1939.

WEBB’S
THE FOUR C’S CUT - COLOUR - CLARITY- CARET WEIGHT The Quality and Value of a Diamond is determined by the 4 C’s. Diamonds with the highest 4C ratios are the rarest and therefore the most valuable.
CUT
COLOUR
A diamond’s cut grade refers to the quality of the tiny surfaces, or facets, polished onto its surface. The facets, known as the crown, culet, table, girdle and pavilion, are arranged with precise mathematical proportions to maximise a diamond’s fire, life and brilliance. The cut, not to be confused with the shape, is the only element of the four Cs to be influenced by the human hand. Diamond cut grades range from ‘excellent’ and ‘very good’, to the midrange ‘good’ and low-end classifications of ‘fair’ and ‘poor’.
Ideally, a white diamond should have no colour at all – like a drop of spring water. Increasing degrees of body colour are measured on a scale ranging from no colour at all (D) to deeply coloured (Z). Beyond ‘Z’ is the range where the diamond’s colour is vivid and rich; these are called ‘fancy colours’. The differences between one shade and the next are very subtle, so grading is carried out under controlled lighting, using a master diamond sample set for comparison and accuracy. Natural diamonds also occur in shades of blue, green, yellow-orange, pink, red and even black. Known as ‘coloured fancies’, these stones are extremely rare and valuable. They are graded according to the intensity of their colour.
CLARITY Clarity refers to the presence of inclusions in a diamond. All diamonds contain imperfections. These are naturally occurring features – wisps of minerals, uncrystallised carbon and tiny fractures – formed deep within the diamond when it was first created. Most inclusions are not visible to the naked eye. The clarity of a diamond is graded by a gemmologist using 10X magnification. Clarity grades range from IF and FL (internally flawless and flawless) to I (included); also, grade may indicate whether the inclusion is near the centre of the stone or along its girdle or outer edge.

CARAT-WEIGHT Carat is the unit of weight for all gemstones. One carat is subdivided into 100 ‘points’. Therefore, a diamond measuring 75 points is three-quarters of a carat in weight or 0.75ct. There are five carats in a gram.

IMPORTANT CONDITIONS OF SALES JEWELS Buy/Sell/Collect
Before the sale, all lots may be examined at the exhibition times specified in the catalogue. Interested persons including, without limitation, bidder’s representatives and auction agents, are understood to have examined all lots which they purchase and to accept their condition as they are at the moment of the fall of the auctioneer’s hammer, and not necessarily as they are described in any written material or oral communications. In placing bids, auction participants acknowledge that they have independently inspected and evaluated every lot they are bidding on.
An exceptional offering of antique and desirable modern pieces, amongst which are diamond rings, heavy gold chains, several gold wrist and pocket watches, diamond and precious stone rings, earrings, heavy silver chains, rock-crystal beads, lockets, pendants, 19th-century paste set jewellery and many other items of interest, mostly without reserve.
FINE JEWELLERY
Important Conditions of Sale for Watches:
Independent Gemmological Reports and Valuations:
As many of the timepieces are old, or their history is unknown, Webb’s offers no guarantee as to the mechanical condition or condition of seals, etc. A timepiece described as ‘fine’ or ‘as new’ is an opinion relating to appearance only. All watches are sold as viewed. It shall be assumed that all buyers have inspected the lots and that they are happy with them in all respects. Watches cannot be returned on the grounds that repairs or service have been carried out, or parts (including straps or bracelets) have been supplied, by anyone other than the named maker. Notwithstanding the foregoing condition, named wristwatches are sold on the basis that the movement (or movement and case where both would normally have been manufactured by the named maker) were manufactured by the named maker. It is recommended that buyers have watches serviced promptly to ensure that damage does not arise from faulty seals or any other aspect of mechanical condition.
Valuations are made available to Webb’s customers to provide an independent opinion as to the quality of the stones and metals comprising a piece, and so that buyers can obtain suitable insurance cover immediately upon purchase and prior to delivery. A valuation for insurance purposes represents a calculated replacement cost allowing for maximum retail margins, so that an insurer can assess the outer limit of their exposure to risk. It does not represent actual new retail replacement, as it makes no provision for competitive trade practice, or for discounts obtained by individual bargaining. Value estimates have been arrived at with the assistance of experts, tests and other methods which Webb’s has deemed in its sole discretion to be appropriate. Whilst Webb’s staff will assist buyers in understanding the methodology and technical details of Gemmological reports and valuations, all auction participants are responsible for reaching their own conclusions as to the value of lots prior to bidding. Webb’s, its consultants and employees make no representation or warranty regarding any opinion, valuation or certificate of any item on offer. Buyers should note the stated purpose of the valuation (insurance, retail market, cash value, estate division etc). Unless otherwise stated, all stones have been mounted when assessed for weight, colour or clarity, and the descriptions given in the catalogue or report are therefore limited in accuracy. Where an actual weight is given, the stone will have been weighed loose to minimise error margins. Nonetheless, the buyer accepts that all reports and descriptions remain opinions and not matters of fact.

THE RULE OF ‘CAVEAT EMPTOR’ APPLIES UNIVERSALLY TO ALL AUCTIONS. Webb’s acts as an agent only and all items are sold at auction together with any relevant reports and valuations. If these differ in any way from other reports or opinions on the same items, this will not be deemed as a reason for the cancellation of a sale. The rule of ‘Caveat Emptor’ applies universally to auctions. The buyer will be assumed to have examined the items and be satisfied about their authenticity and originality. Webb’s endeavours to describe all lots as accurately as possible but makes no guarantee as to the material content of items such as gold, silver, platinum, diamond, sapphire or any other material. By bidding at any of Webb’s auctions, buyers will be deemed to acknowledge this important condition and take full responsibility for their participation in any sale.
WEBB’S
CONDITIONS OF SALE FOR BUYERS 1. BIDDING. The highest bidder shall be the purchaser subject to the auctioneer having the right to refuse the bid of any person. Should any dispute arise as to the bidding the lot in dispute will be immediately put up for sale again at the preceding bid or the auctioneer may declare the purchaser which declaration shall be conclusive. No person shall advance less as a bid than the sum nominated by the auctioneer. A bid may be withdrawn before the auctioneer declares that bidding on a lot is closed.
B. To rescind the sale of that or any other lot sold to the purchaser at the same or any other auction.
2. RESERVES. All lots are sold subject to the right of the seller or his agent to impose a reserve.
C. To resell the lot by public or private sale. Any deficiency resulting from such resale, after giving credit to the purchaser for any part payment together with all costs incurred in connection with the lot, shall be paid to Webb’s by the purchaser. Any surplus over the proceeds of sale shall belong to the seller and in this condition the expression “proceeds of sale” shall have the same meaning in relation to a sale by private treaty as it has in relation to a sale by auction.
3. REGISTRATION. Purchasers shall complete a bidding card before the sale giving their own correct name address and telephone number. It is accepted by bidders that the supply of false information on a bidding card shall be interpreted as deliberate fraud.
D. To store the lot whether at Webb’s own premises or elsewhere at the sole expense of the purchaser and to release the lot only after the purchase price has been paid in full plus the accrued cost of removal storage and all other costs connected to the lot.
4. BUYERS’ PREMIUM. The purchaser accepts that Webb’s will apply a buyer’s premium which is charged in addition to the hammer price (unless otherwise stated) together with GST on the premium, which combined sum shall be the total purchase price. The rate of Buyers Premium is published in each catalogue online in conjunction with the catalogue.
E. To charge interest on the purchase price at a rate 2% above Webb’s bankers’ then current rate for commercial overdraft facilities to the extent that the price or any part of it remains unpaid for more than seven days from the date of the sale.
5. PAYMENT. Payment for all items purchased is due on the day of sale immediately following completion of the sale. If full payment cannot be made on the day of sale a deposit of 10% of the total sum due must be made on the day of sale and the balance must be paid, in clear funds, within 5 working days. Payment is by cash, bank (cashiers) cheque or Eftpos. Personal and private bank cheques will be accepted but must be cleared within 5 working days of completion of the sale. Credit cards are not accepted. 6. LOTS SOLD AS VIEWED. All lots are sold as viewed and with all errors to description faults and imperfections whether visible or not. Webb’s has used its skills and experience to ensure the genuineness or authenticity of each lot but, as it is impossible to provide conclusive proof of genuineness or authenticity for most items, buyers should proceed upon their own judgement. Buyers shall be deemed to have inspected the lots or to have made enquiries to their complete satisfaction prior to sale and by the act of bidding shall be deemed to be satisfied with the lots in all respects. 7. WEBB’S ACT AS AGENTS. They have full discretion to conduct all aspects of the sale and to withdraw any lot from the sale without giving any reason. 8. COLLECTION. Purchases are to be taken away at the buyer’s expense immediately after the sale once payment in full has been made. If this is not done, Webb’s will not be responsible if the lot is lost stolen damaged or destroyed. Any payment by cheque will not be considered paid until the payment has cleared. Any items not collected within seven days of the auction may be subject to a storage and insurance fee. A receipted invoice must be produced prior to delivery of any lot. 9. LICENCES. Buyers who purchase an item which falls within the provisions of the Antiquities Act 1975 or the Arms Act 1958 cannot take possession of that item until they have shown to Webb’s a license under the appropriate Act. 10. FAILURE TO MAKE PAYMENT. If a purchaser fails either to pay for or take away any lot Webb’s shall without further notice to the purchaser at its absolute discretion and without prejudice to any other rights or remedies it may have be entitled to exercise one or more of the following rights or remedies: A. To issue proceeding against the purchaser for damages for breach of contract.
F. To retain possession of that or any other lot purchased by the purchaser at that or any other auction and to release the same only after payment of money due. G. Webb’s shall be entitled to a possessory lien on any property of the purchaser for any purpose while any money remains unpaid under this contract. H. To apply any payment made by the purchaser to Webb’s towards any money owing to Webb’s in respect of anything whatsoever irrespective of any directive given in respect of or restriction placed upon such payment by the purchaser whether expressed or implied. I. Title and right of disposal of the goods shall not pass to the purchaser until payment has been made in full by cleared funds. Where any lot purchased in held by Webb’s pending i. clearance of funds by the purchaser or ii. completion of payment after receipt of a deposit the lot will be held by Webb’s as bailee for the vendor risk and title passing to the purchaser immediately upon notification of clearance of funds or upon completion of purchase. In the event that a lot is lost, stolen, damaged or destroyed before title is transferred to the purchaser, the purchaser shall be entitled to a refund of all monies paid to Webb’s in respect of that lot but shall not be entitled to any compensation for any consequent losses howsoever arising. 11. BIDDERS DEEMED PRINCIPALS. All bidders shall be held personally and solely liable for all obligations arising from any bid including both telephone and absentee bids. Any person wishing to bid as agent for a third party must obtain written authority to do so from Webb’s prior to bidding. 12.SUBJECT BIDS. Where the highest bid is below the reserve and the auctioneer declares a sale to be “subject to vendor’s consent” or words to that effect the highest bid remains binding upon the bidder until the vendor accepts or rejects it. If the bid is accepted there is a contractual obligation upon the bidder to pay for the lot. However a bid may be withdrawn by the highest bidder at any time before the vendor accepts the bid. Once accepted by the vendor a contract has been formed. 13. SALES POST AUCTION OR BY PRIVATE TREATY. The above conditions shall apply to all buyers of goods from Webb’s irrespective of the circumstances under which the sale is negotiated.
