CORRESPONDENCE, TE KAHA CONFERENCE Collection of letters and receipts relating to the inaugural Maori Writers' and Artists' Conference at Te Kaha, East Cape, 1973.
Collection includes a 'carbon copy' of a letter (approx 22 lines, dated 24 May 1973) to Hone Tuwhare from M T Nicolaidi, Director of the Queen Elizabeth II Arts Council of New Zealand, confirming a grant of $500 towards 'costs of travel'. This copy was sent to Malta Sidney, lawyer and Conference Treasurer, who was to 'account for disbursement of the funds on the production of receipts'. Along with a letter (approx 12 lines) from Tuwhare to Sidney, being a 'preliminary [underlined] account of petrol and "wages" costs for running the truck with art gear, including piano, to TE KAHA and return.' Attached to this letter are five receipts for petrol (dated May to June 1973), one handwritten receipt from truck driver Willie Taipua, and two other notes (both signed by Tuwhare). Also a lengthy typewritten letter (approx 80 lines, dated 20 May 1974) and hastily handwritten postscript (approx 30 lines) from Tuwhare to Sidney discussing Te Kaha and the forthcoming second conference at Wairoa. Also a copy of Sidney's reply (approx 24 lines, dated 22 May 1974). A most fascinating record. Tuwhare's passion apparent, as ever. G. (See also Lots 87, 526, 531 & 532). Est. $500 *13

THE BRUCE GAMBLE COLLECTION OF POSTCARDS 470
THE BRUCE GAMBLE COLLECTION OF POSTCARDS DR BRUCE GAMBLE (1942-2004) An only child, raised by inveterate collectors, the young Bruce cut his teeth on stamp and coin collecting. The interests of his family-members led them into the realms of art (Bruce's step-mother Brenda was known to be an early encourager of Colin McCahon), colonial history and books. The men of the family were keen on steam trains, New Zealand transport, and the history of Auckland. Numismatics and philately took second place as Bruce's lifelong interest in trams and transport took hold. At Penrose High School, Bruce was named Dux. He went on to study civil engineering at university, and in his mid twenties – having completed a PhD – he moved to Canada to take up a position teaching at the University of Calgary. Alberta was home to Bruce and his family for seventeen years. While on sabbatical leave in New Zealand in the early eighties, Bruce worked on a report on light rail for Beca Carter Ltd. By 1985, the Gambles were back in New Zealand. Bruce took early retirement and soon became thoroughly involved as a volunteer at Auckland's MOTAT (Museum of Transport and Technology). Here the carpentry skills he learned from his father resurfaced. Bruce wanted MOTAT to be a professional museum, and was architect of the MOTAT Bill, which secured the funding to achieve this. The museum became his second home and family. Beset by ill health, Bruce engineered a bag to contain his chemotherapy paraphernalia so that he could continue to work amongst the people and trams he loved. Bruce's last project was his contribution to the book 'The History of Epsom', edited by his great friend Graham Bush. Bruce's remarkable postcard collection – the result of years of foraging – reflects his passion for trams and transport. In it, the histories of beloved New Zealand locations are revealed. By zeroing in on, say, Ponsonby cards, we can see what has been lost and gained. A Real Photo card attributed to W T W (W T Wilson, Remuera) depicts a tranquil Home Bay. This spot is near St Mary's Beach, the subject of another card featuring a busy boatyard since replaced by motorway. The image, attributed to W T, reveals that Clare & Collings once advertised 'boats for hire' on a corrugated iron roof. A message from 'Ted' on the verso of the card entreats 'Mode' to 'Try & work Mary so as to get her genteel [underlined].' If you share something in common with Sir George Grey in citing Kawau Island as a favourite spot, this collection will please you. Twenty views of the island are here, the attributions including J D Kemp, T G Palmer, Price Photo Company and Wilson Photos. Robert Graham's Hot Springs Hotel in nearby Waiwera is well illustrated in ten images by the likes of Real Photo Post Cards and H Winkelmann. Curiosities of the past await decoding by the researcher. The ominous caption 'Submarine Explosion at the Worser Bay, Wellington, NZ' turns out to refer to an entertainment at the Worser Bay Carnival of 1908, a racing yacht having been donated for the destroying, with a dead fish collecting competition to follow. The primary focus of one album is Wellington trams. Bruce's dedication leads one to suspect that the vast majority of cards on this subject will be found within his collection. A divider appears and the images move north to Thames and Waihi, showing mining operations and street scenes. The coloured Photochrom series may be 'photo enhanced'. An anonymous sender states 'This is the Waihi recreation ground it looks about 10 times better in the photo than in reality.' Within the broader context of New Zealand railways, Bruce appears to have had a particular fondness for Raetihi, as suggested by a series of Real Post Cards, one depicting two horsemen outside Ashwell Jeweller & Stationer. Whanganui was certainly of interest to him, particulary Victoria Avenue and its transport systems. One Tanner Bros card, sent by 'Perry', bears a business-like message beginning 'In Continuation'. Perry was told by a hotel manager that business was very good with most people. Napier and Hastings images are found here, New Plymouth too. Numerous images of Christchurch resonate especially in the wake of the recent earthquake. Occasionally a card in the collection appears to be a duplicate of another, but in fact proves to be subtly different, the image attributed to another firm, coloured, or altered in some other way. A consequence of Bruce's focus on New Zealand transport is that his collection gives a real sense of STREET LIFE in our country. This is a most impressive collection, well worth your air points! The nearly 2,000 cards are mostly from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. They are housed in modern sleeved albums, and are in good order. Many are postally used. There are some duplicates. LETTER, HONE TUWHARE Handwritten letter from Hone Tuwhare to Janet Sidney referring to 'Ron Mason's coat'.
Approx 48 lines. Dated 1 June 1999. Tuwhare responds to a letter from Janet Sidney telling of the death of her husband, Malta. He offers his condolences and words of encouragement: 'I'm very sorry to hear of dear Malta's demise. I mourn for you – and with your Holy Whanau, in your loss. Our loss [underlined], together. However, let your life move on. There are winter flowers that bloom, even if it's the humble puha flower necking out. And I'd love to meet your grand-daughter, Harata. You see, she is your [underlined] consolation, because, on her tiny foots, Malta walks!' Tuwhare asks Janet to send him 'a simple unrhymed bit of verse – with aroha in it – to prove you've been listening to me!' He also makes reference to a jacket in Sidney's custody, once owned by R A K Mason: '.Do please hang on to Ron Mason's coat, for me to pick up one day, in Spring perhaps, when I plan to come up thataway.' Tuwhare wrote about the jacket in the poem 'Ron Mason', published in the collection 'Something Nothing' in 1974: 'Your suit has not the right cut for me except around / the gut. I'll keep the jacket though: dry-cleaned / it'll absorb new armpit sweat.' The jacket, still in Sidney's possession when Tuwhare died, will be on show at Webb's during the viewing for this sale. It is not for sale. The letter comes in its original postmarked envelope, together with a copy of the verse (8 lines) written by Sidney in response to Tuwhare's request: 'He says he'll visit me in Spring / To pick up his jacket / Just the thought puts the spring in my step'. 1st ed. Auckland: Whitcombe & Tombs, [1924]. 16mo. 25p. M1275. Brown card, stylised fruiting tree motif to front (repeated on TP). Staples rusted. Mild foxing. Famously uncommon (the author is said to have disposed of two hundred copies by dropping them off the end of Queen's Wharf) and hugely important. Allen Curnow in the introduction to Mason's 'Collected Poems', 1962: 'New Zealanders sometimes trace from the early nineteen-twenties the beginnings of a poetic tradition which they may call their own. Their best reasons for doing this are found between the four-inch by five-inch brown paper covers of "The Beggar", that selection from his earliest poetry which R A K Mason published in Auckland in 1924.' CONDITIONS OF SALE FOR BUYERS
1. BIDDING. The highest bidder shall be the purchaser, subject to the auctioneer having the right to refuse the bid of any person. Should any dispute arise as to the bidding the lot in dispute will be immediately put up for sale again at the preceding bid, or the auctioneer may declare the purchaser, which declaration shall be conclusive. No person shall advance less at a bid than the sum nominated by the auctioneer and no bid may be retracted. 2. RESERVES. All lots are sold subject to the right of the seller or his agent to impose a reserve. 3. REGISTRATION. Purchasers shall complete a bidding card before the sale giving their own correct name, address and telephone number. It is accepted by bidders that the supply of false information on a bidding card shall be interpreted as deliberate fraud. 4. BUYER'S PREMIUM. The purchaser accepts that, in addition to the hammer price, Bethunes at Webb's will charge a buyer's premium of 20% of the hammer price (unless otherwise stated), plus GST on the premium, effectively totalling 23%. 5. PAYMENT. Payment for all items purchased is due on the day of sale immediately following completion of the sale. If full payment cannot be made on the day of sale a deposit of 10% of the total sum due must be made on the day of sale and the balance must be paid within 5 working days. Payment is by cash, bank cheque or Eftpos. Cheques will be accepted but must be cleared before removal of goods. Major credit cards are accepted. Amex attracts an additional surcharge.
a. To issue proceeding against the purchaser for damages for breach of contract. b. To rescind the sale of that or any other lot sold to the purchaser at the same or any other auction. c. To resell the lot by public or private sale. Any deficiency resulting from such resale, after giving credit to the purchaser for any part payment, together with all costs incurred in connection with the lot shall be paid to Bethunes at Webb's by the purchaser. Any surplus over the proceeds of sale shall belong to the seller and in this condition the expression 'proceeds of sale' shall have the same meaning in relation to a sale by private treaty as it has in relation to a sale by auction. d. To store the lot whether at Bethunes at Webb's own premises or elsewhere at the sole expense of the purchaser and to release the lot only after the purchase price has been paid in full plus the accrued cost of removal, storage, and all other costs connected to the lot. e. To charge interest on the purchase price at a rate 2% above Bethunes at Webb's bankers' then current rate for commercial overdraft facilities, to the extent that the price or any part of it remains unpaid for more than seven days from the date of the sale. f. To retain possession of that or any other lot purchased by the purchaser at that or any other auction and to release the same only after payment of money due.
6. LOTS SOLD AS VIEWED. All lots are sold as viewed and with all errors in description, faults and imperfections whether visible or not. Neither Bethunes at Webb's nor its vendor are responsible for errors in description or for the genuineness or authenticity of any lot or for any fault or defect in it. No warranty whatsoever is made. Buyers proceed upon their own judgement. Buyers shall be deemed to have inspected the lots, or to have made enquiries to their complete satisfaction, prior to sale and by the act of bidding shall be deemed to be satisfied with the lots in all respects.
g. To apply the proceeds of sale of any lot then or subsequently due to the purchaser towards settlement of money due to Bethunes at Webb's or its vendor. Bethunes at Webb's shall be entitled to a possessory lien on any property of the purchaser for any purpose while any monies remain unpaid under this contract.
7. BETHUNES AT WEBB'S ACTS AS AGENT. Bethunes at Webb's has full discretion to conduct all aspects of the sale and to withdraw any lot from the sale without giving any reason.
i. Title and right of disposal of the goods shall not pass to the purchaser until payment has been made in full by cleared funds. Where any lot purchased is held by Bethunes at Webb's pending (i) clearance of funds by the purchaser or (ii) completion of payment after receipt of a deposit, the lot will be held by Bethunes at Webb's as bailee for the vendor, risk and title passing to the purchaser immediately upon notification of clearance of funds or upon completion of purchase. In the event that a lot is lost, stolen, damaged or destroyed before title is transferred to the purchaser, the purchaser shall be entitled to a refund of all monies paid to Bethunes at Webb's in respect of that lot, but shall not be entitled to any compensation for any consequent losses howsoever arising.
8. COLLECTION. Purchases are to be taken away at the buyer's expense immediately after the sale except where a cheque remains uncleared. If this is not done Bethunes at Webb's will not be responsible if the lot is lost, stolen, damaged or destroyed. Any items not collected within seven days of the auction may be subject to a storage and insurance fee. A receipted invoice must be produced prior to delivery of any lot. 9. LICENCES. Buyers who purchase an item which falls within the provisions of the Antiquities Act 1975 or the Arms Act 1958 cannot take possession of that item until they have shown to Bethunes at Webb's a license under the appropriate Act. 10. THE ANTIQUITIES ACT 1975. Buyers should note that some items may come under jurisdiction of this Act and permission may have to be sought from the Ministry of Culture and Hertiage Te Manatu Taonga for their export.
46
11. FAILURE TO MAKE PAYMENT. If a purchaser fails either to pay for or take away any lot Bethunes at Webb's shall without further notice to the purchaser, at its absolute discretion and without prejudice to any other rights or remedies it may have, be entitled to exercise one or more of the following rights or remedies:
Bethunes at Webb's
h. To apply any payment made by the purchaser to Bethunes at Webb's towards any money owing to Bethunes at Webb's in respect of any thing whatsoever irrespective of any directive given in respect of, or restriction placed upon, such payment by the purchaser whether expressed or implied.
12. BIDDERS DEEMED PRINCIPALS. All bidders shall be held personally and solely liable for all obligations arising from any bid, including both 'telephone' and 'absentee bids'. Any person wishing to bid as agent for a third party must obtain written authority to do so from Bethunes at Webb's prior to bidding. 13. 'SUBJECT BIDS'. Where the highest bid is below the reserve and the auctioneer declares a sale to be 'subject to vendor's consent' or words to that effect, the highest bid remains binding upon the bidder until the vendor accepts or rejects it. If the bid is accepted there is a contractual obligation upon the bidder to pay for the lot.

Bethunes at Webb's
GUIDE FOR BUYERS
Bethunes at Webb's has set out the following information for those unfamiliar with auction procedures. Important: Please refer to full Conditions of Sale for Buyers printed elsewhere in this catalogue and displayed in the saleroom.
REGISTRATION
All intending buyers must complete a bidding form available from the reception desk.
BUYING AT AUCTION
FLOOR BIDDERS Register and obtain a bidder card before bidding on any lot or lots. Be aware that a buyer's premium of 20% plus GST (i.e. 23%) is payable in addition to the bid price. Make your bids clear, preferably by holding up your bidder card. If you make a mistake (for example, the auctioneer takes a bid from you at a higher level than you had intended, or you realise that you had bid on the wrong lot), call out to the auctioneer immediately so that the bidding can be adjusted. Waiting until the hammer falls is too late. If your bid is the highest and the lot is knocked down to you then you have entered a binding obligation to pay for that lot. BIDDING INCREMENTS ARE AT THE AUCTIONEER'S DISCRETION Bidding will commence at a bidding increment over the second highest absentee/ postal bid received prior to the commencement of the auction. Where no bids have been received bidding will commence at half the auctioneer's lot estimate, or at $10, whichever is the higher, at the auctioneer's sole discretion. SALES SUBJECT TO VENDOR'S CONSENT Where your bid is the highest, but still below the reserve, the auctioneer may declare you to be the 'buyer subject to vendor's consent' ('Subject' or 'SVA'). This means that your bid is held as binding and will be communicated to the vendor at the earliest opportunity. If the vendor accepts then there is a contractual obligation for you to pay for the lot. If the vendor does not accept, you are released from any obligation, however you will have first right to negotiate with the vendor through Bethunes at Webb's until an agreement is reached, and Bethunes at Webb's will not present other offers to the vendor until your negotiations are ended. ABSENTEE BIDS Bethunes at Webb's will endeavour to ensure that your bidding instructions are executed, but accept no responsibility or liability for failure to do so. Lots will be bought as favourably as is allowed by bidding in the sale room, other competitive absentee bids and any reserve imposed by the vendor. Please note that Bethunes at Webb's cannot guarantee that another bidder will not be successful at your limit if, in the course of competitive bidding, a floor bidder bids your limit first. Absentee bids are accepted by written instruction which can be sent by fax, email or post to arrive no later than the evening before the commencement of the sale. Priority will be given to the earliest received absentee bid where identical bids are received. Absentee bids will be executed on the following basis: If your bid limit is equal to or above a reserve, the auctioneer may open the bidding at reserve on your behalf and will bid thereafter only in response to competition for the lot. If your bid limit is below a reserve, the auctioneer may open the bidding at your limit and if there are no further bids in the room may sell to you 'subject to vendor's consent'. In the absence of a reserve the auctioneer may exercise your bid in advance of any opening bid or may open the bidding on your behalf at a bidding increment over the second highest absentee bid received prior to auction commencement or if no other absentee bids have been received bidding will commence at half the auctioneer's lot estimate, or at $10 whichever is the higher, at the auctioneer's sole discretion.
TELEPHONE BIDS Such bids are available for items over $100 and where the auctioneer is able to confirm availability of staff to provide this service. The same conditions as above apply to telephone bidders. Bethunes at Webb's will telephone the number you have given several minutes before the lot you have requested comes up for sale. If your phone is engaged or we are unable to make contact the auction will proceed without your bidding. Our staff will ask you to hold when we have made contact. They will then tell you that your lot is about to come up. The bids will be relayed to you and you can enter the bidding at any time by making your call. Please note that the bidding at many auctions can be fast and furious. The auctioneer will not favour a phone bidder over and above buyers who are attending the auction by giving them more time to bid. You will need to establish your limit and make sure that you bid clearly and promptly. Telephone bids are only accepted for catalogued sales and on items with estimates over $100. PRE-SALE ESTIMATES Estimates printed in the catalogue or given verbally are intended as a guide only and can be subject to revision nearer to the time of a sale. Bethunes at Webb's staff are available during pre-sale viewing times and by appointment to assist prospective bidders with estimates and any aspect of the auction procedure. CONDITION REPORTS Bethunes at Webb's staff will provide condition reports over and above the catalogue description for out of Auckland buyers. However, please note that No 6 of the Conditions of Sale for Buyers will still apply despite the obtaining of a condition report. PAYMENT Payment for all items purchased is due on the day of sale immediately following completion of the sale. If full payment cannot be made on the day of sale a deposit of 10% of the total sum due must be made on the day of sale and the balance must be paid within 5 working days.Payment is by cash, bank cheque or Eftpos. Cheques will be accepted but must be cleared before removal of goods. Major credit cards are accepted. Amex attracts an additional surcharge.
