ongratulations to Jim and Bonnie Winder, and to all that have made West End Babe Ruth baseball a fixture in our community for 75 seasons! I can’t even imagine the hours the husband and wife duo have put into the league for teenage ballplayers over the decades. West End Baseball has been very instrumental in developing area players when they leave the Little League diamond, and move on up to the Big Field, which is used the rest of their baseball career. The only difference being the distance of the outfield fence, depending on the level they are competing at. There’s a great deal of instructional baseball to be taught, especially at the 13- year-old level. West End always seems to find great managers and coaches; many have been involved in the league for years. Three that come to my mind are George Lepley, Tom Marnon and Dave Cipriani. The long time baseball guys have about a century of coaching between them. That’s a lot of long innings, rain delays, and practices. Not to mention making sure the field is in good shape. One thing that has always made West End Baseball unique is the bringing together of young talent from around the area. Young ballplayers get a chance to step out from their local school boundaries, and play with those who they are usually competing against. More important than baseball, they make new friendships that will last a lifetime. They also

learn for the first time there’s much more talent out there than just their own local league. It has been a great recipe for success when allstar time rolls around. I know Jimmy and Hunter loved their days of playing West End Baseball, and I miss watching it from the bleachers. Although those who know me will tell you, I never really spent much time sitting, just too many good things going on around the ballpark and people to talk to. A special tip of the cap to George Lepley who managed both my boys to World Series. Jimmy has Webb household bragging rights reaching three World Series, to Hunter’s one trip. Hunt’s teams were always knocking at the door, which made that one World Series visit very special. I must also give Levon Whitmyer a special tip of the West End cap for managing Jimmy’s team to his last World Series. I believe five local school districts were represented on that team. The boys being 16 to 18 had played their entire high school careers against each other, most had graduated and had one last West End hurrah reaching the World Series in Klamath Falls, Oregon. That’s another thing about West End Babe Ruth baseball, the Webb family got to see a lot of places in our great Country we would have probably never visited. The year Jimmy was playing in Klamath Falls Oregon, Hunter was playing in the 15-year-old World Series in Lawrenceburg, Tennessee near Nashville.

Luckily for me, there were only a few days they overlapped and I was able to catch a flight and catch the action in the Volunteer State. Our first World Series experience was in Salt Lake City, Utah. The whole family was able to make it Jim including my Dad. It has Webb, Jr. provided special memories for Jimmy and all of us. I only wish Pop Pop Webb could have been there for all the World Series. It was also the motivation for a young Hunter-man, he told me at the time, “I’m going to play in the World Series”. The other World Series we attended was in Loudoun County Virginia, which is not too far from Washington, D.C. There was plenty to do, and plenty to see, but this one was a little bittersweet. See, Jimmy broke his wrist on an inside the park homerun at the Mid-Atlantic Regional. He learned a valuable lesson of why you don’t go Pete Rose headfirst slide into home plate as he broke his wrist against the catcher’s shin guard. The good news was we were heading to the World Series; the bad news was he was watching from the dugout. West End baseball sort of became the vacation guide for my family. Although the boys are now grown and I wish we would have gone to Ocean City more often, I wouldn’t trade those baseball days for anything. Beginning with our West End family, we met so many great people in our travels, wherever the desti-

nation was, the people across our great Nation could not have been any nicer. It really gave me a bird’s eye view to how special our Country, and the people who make it up are. Babe Ruth baseball would use host families at the World Series sites. An approved family within the local community would basically adopt your son for the week of the World Series. Two or three players would stay with their host family. At first I was a little uneasy with this, but as time passed I realized it was one of those growing up things in a young person’s life that helped make the event so extra special. My Sons, to this day, keep in contact with their host families. They adopted them for much longer than one week; this seems to be the norm for many West End players. I have so many great stories and memories of our days spent traveling for West End Baseball, I don’t have enough pages to share them all. My favorite may be the “You, You, You, the Woman and You” story and all that surrounded that game that took place in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania. I promise to someday tell that story in the entirety. Those that know the story are laughing right now. Just let me say a Homer umpire got called out by the West End faithful and he didn’t like it, so he showed them where the gate was. However, to this day I think their energy and support of the players changed the game. Thank you to all of them, and no I wasn’t one of them. Tip of my New York Yankee cap to all the great folks that have volunteered and made West End Babe Ruth baseball possible for 75 years! God Bless America.

uly is almost over, and before you know it, the Little League World Series will be here and kids will be heading back to school. Before they head back, help get them prepped by giving them something to read. Listen, I know, it’s summer and that means pools and bikes and creeks and campfires. But when it rains, or your teen is lounging by the pool, maybe offer them something to read to start re-engaging their summer brains! Here are some great tween/teen/ young adult options! The Hunger Games, by Suzanne Collins: This series is practically a classic now, and for good reason! The Hunger Games trilogy takes place in an unspecified future time, in the dystopian, postapocalyptic nation of Panem, located in the ruins of North America. The country consists of the wealthy and eccentric Capitol, and 12 (formerly 13) poorer districts ruled by the Capitol. The Capitol is lavishly rich and technologically advanced, but the 12 districts are in varying states of poverty. The trilogy’s narrator and protagonist, Katniss Everdeen, lives in District 12, the poorest region of Panem, formerly known as Appalachia, where people regularly die of starvation. As punishment for a past rebellion against the Capitol (called the “Dark Days”), wherein 12 of the districts were defeated, and the 13th was supposedly destroyed, one boy and one girl from each of the 12 districts, between the ages of 12 and 18, are selected by lottery to compete in the Hunger Games on an annual basis. The Games are a televised event in which the participants, called “tributes”, are forced to fight to the death in a dangerous public arena. The winning tribute and his/her home district are then rewarded with food, supplies, and riches. The purposes of

the Hunger Games are to provide entertainment for the Capitol and to remind the districts of the Capitol’s power and lack of remorse. The Hunger Games follows 16-yearold Katniss Everdeen, a Steph girl from District 12 who Nordstrom volunteers for the 74th Hunger Games in place of her younger sister Primrose Everdeen. Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling: OK, OK, I know, everyone knows HP, but in case you haven’t gotten on the bandwagon yet…The novels revolve around Harry Potter, an orphan who discovers at the age of eleven that he is a wizard, though he lives in the ordinary world of non-magical people known as Muggles. The wizarding world exists alongside the Muggle world, albeit hidden and in secrecy. His magical ability is inborn, and children with such abilities are invited to attend exclusive magic schools that teaches the necessary skills to succeed in the wizarding world. Harry becomes a student at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, the Wizarding School in Scotland, and it is here where most of the events in the series take place. As Harry develops through his adolescence, he learns to overcome the problems that face him: magical, social and emotional, including ordinary teenage challenges such as friendships, infatuation, romantic relationships, schoolwork and exams, anxiety, depression, stress, and the greater test of preparing himself for the confrontation in the real world that lies ahead, in wizarding Britain’s increasingly-violent

second wizarding war. Follow Harry, Hermione, Ron and the rest of Dumbledore’s Army as Harry discovers he’s a wizard, searches out Horcruxes and proceeds to work to defeat He-Who-MustNot-Be-Named and the rest of the Death Eaters in this classic series. This is probably my favorite book series of all time. There are seven books in the series, but well worth the time investment whether you are 10 or 40. Also, if you happen to have a Kindle Unlimited Account, all seven books are available there! Hocus Pocus and The All-New Sequel by A. W. Jantha. Hocus Pocus is beloved by Halloween enthusiasts all over the world. Diving once more into the world of witches, this electrifying twopart young adult novel, released on the twentyfifth anniversary of the 1993 film, marks a new era of Hocus Pocus. Fans will be spellbound by a fresh retelling of the original film, followed by the all-new sequel that continues the story with the next generation of Salem teens. Shortly after moving from California to Salem, Max Dennison finds himself in hot water when he accidentally releases a coven of witches from the afterlife. Max, his sister, and his new friends (human and otherwise) must find a way to stop the witches from carrying out their evil plan and remaining on Earth to torment Salem for all eternity. Twenty-five years later, Max and Allison’s seventeen-year-old daughter, Poppy, finds herself face-to-face with the Sanderson sisters in all their sinister glory. When Halloween celebrations don’t quite go as planned, it’s a race against time as Poppy and her friends fight to save her family and all of Salem from the witches’ latest deathdefying scheme. I hope I gave you something fun to read this summer! Enjoy!

Sadly, over 50 percent of marriages end in divorce.

45% to 50% first marriages end in divorce • 60% to 67% second marriages end in divorce • 70% to 73% third marriages end in divorce * Source of this Divorce Statistics: Jennifer Baker, Forest Institute of Professional Psychology, Springfield

But the emotional toll of divorce cannot be put into statistics. At Lepley, Engelman, Yaw & Wilk, we are sensitive to the emotional turmoil our clients are experiencing while we go through the process of identifying and dividing marital assets, determining child custody, and establishing child and spousal support. Even if you file for a “no-fault” divorce where you and your spouse agree mutually to divorce, there are still many aspects to be resolved which require an attorney: property division, spousal support, and child custody and support. In a disputed divorce, there are usually two issues to address. First, the division of marital property. Second, there is spousal support and, where children are involved, custody and child support. The Family Law attorneys at Lepley, Engelman, Yaw & Wilk are particularly adept at making sure you receive your fair share of your assets and have a very successful record of resolving these disputes in favor of our clients.

The West End Babe Ruth League: 75 Years of Baseball Excellence By Lou Hunsinger Jr.

T

he year was 1943. The United States and most of the rest of the world were in the throes of fighting World War II. Gas was 15 cents a gallon if you could get this rationed commodity at all. The Jefferson Memorial was dedicated, a Coke was a nickel, the All American Girls Professional Baseball League was created, and in a baseball development closer to home, the West End Baseball League, later the West End Babe Ruth League was founded. The league was founded as a league for 13 to 15-year-old players who graduated from Carl Stotz’s fledgling Little League program. The league was originally named the “West End Boys’ Hardball League.” James Brink, Chester Best, Clifford Mullett and M.E. Younkin and the help of various other dedicated adult volunteers founded it. The league’s original sponsors and teams

were: the Newberry Lions, Hurr’s Dairy, Capital Bakery and Stroehmann’s Bakery. The league’s first ball field was in the area between the Bowman Field grandstands and West Fourth Street. Through the years the league played its games at various locations including the area south of where the West Branch School is, Green Avenue in Old Lycoming Township and now at Logue Field. The league operated as an independent league and played against East End and Mid- City Leagues. West End continued as an independent loop until 1969, when Carl Hunter, Daniel Vassallo, and Anthony Cipriani had the league join Babe Ruth Baseball Inc., then out of Trenton, N.J. They played baseball on Green Ave. in Old Lycoming Township (now Winder Field) and at Robert Bair Logue Memorial Field located on Wahoo Drive. In 2003 Logue Field was moved to its present location on Foresman St.

illiamsport selectees entering active service will be escorted by City Hall to the Pennsy Station by the Aviation Cadets Corps, and drum and bugle corps, under arrangements made by the Veterans Committee, it was announced last night. Recalling their own experiences of the last war, the Veterans Committee, composed of members of Howard W. Kahler Post 844, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Forty et Eight Voiture No. 36, and Royal P. Steinbacher Post 617, American Legion, took action to arrange appropriate send-offs for the local men after the lack of a suitable programs was pointed out by the Gazette and Bulletin editorial. The committee met with Capt. E. E. Wheeler. Commander of the 331st College Training Detachment at Dickinson Junior College and found ready support for a send-off. In direct touch with young men who have just left home for war service, said he believed the selectees should have a community send-off and promised to

have the entire corps of aviation cadets and their drum and bugle corps escort the large contingent from each of the two local draft boards, each month, unless something of a military nature prevents it. The arrangements call for inductees to assemble at City Hall at 1:45 p.m. on the day they leave for camp and with the aviation cadets and the mayor and city council in line, march to the Pennsy Station. At the station the selectees will disband to spend the remaining time with their family and friends. In case of inclement weather there will not be an escort and selectees will go direct to the station. Each draftee will receive a letter explaining the program. Lack of sufficient musical organizations in the city makes it impossible to provide similar recognition for smaller groups of individuals leaving. It was explained that most members of musical groups are employed and unable to get away for a daytime program. Men scheduled to leave for service, even though not members of the draftees’ contingent that particular day, are invited to join the parade, it was announced.

WILL YOU HAVE THE FINAL SAY? There is no question that a discussion will take place during which all the details of your funeral and body disposition will be considered and decided upon. The only question is: Will you be taking part in the conversation? It certainly seems fitting that you do, when you consider that no one has a better understanding of your wishes and beliefs than you do. You also have a responsibility to take such personal matters into your own hands. Otherwise, those who love you most will be forced to make the decisions for you at a time when they are likely to have their thinking clouded by high emotion. Funeral prearrangement enables you to take a clear-headed approach to funeral planning. At the time of an actual funeral, most decisions need to be made within a few hours. By preplanning the service options, you can take your time and make the decisions in an unhurried and thoughtful way. The funeral home is an important part of any community. To learn more about our services, please call Michael R. Lingg, Supervisor or any of our staff at KNIGHT-CONFER FUNERAL HOME at 570-323-7717. We invite you to tour our home at 1914 Memorial Avenue, where we have been faithfully serving our community since 1879.

The Jaded Eye…

The Grandparent Hotel

I

t’s come to my attention that my 13-year-old nephew bowed out of summer camp to spend a week at his grandmother’s house. Little did he know the same scenario played out for me when I was the same age. If he did, he might have asked for some advice. Now, I doubt his gram will be up at the crack of dawn with a bugle in one hand and a whip in the other to wake him up for chores. Well, only if he misbehaved the night before. He’s more of an intellectual than a devil, but even so, here are some tips I would have given him before he checked in at “grandparent hotel.” Scope the surroundings. This means not living in the living room all day in front of the television set. Get outside and explore your new area at your disposal for the week! If it’s in the country, go find some berries to pick (not eat). If gram lives in a residential neighborhood, seek out the local park or convenience store. Walk and hike to them. Grab an ice cream, browse some magazines, take it all in as I did. You may get lucky and even find a pool! Make your bed. Spare your grandmother the inconvenience and work of picking up after you. Make the bed after you rise and shine. Fold your clothes. Take

her dog for a stroll if she has one chomping at the bit to get outside. In other words, just because you’re not at home, don’t lose the responsibilities of being at home. What’s her name? Go ahead; make yourself available to the cute girls who capture your attention in the new Gerry neighborhood. Wow, them Ayers with your intellect and faux gold cell phone case. Play your homemade YouTube videos for them to comment on — the go-cart jumps, the feeding of stray lambs. Don’t be shy as I was with Dominic’s sister who lived across the street from my grandparents in Dunmore, Pa. Look, you’re there for a week, not a month. Be a flirt; give them a ride on your handlebars. You did bring your bike, didn’t you? What’s for dinner? Actually, breakfast and lunch also. Be gracious for what she prepares for you. If it’s horrid, continue to fake it. Ask for pancakes, and I bet she’ll oblige. Ask for pizza each night, and she may pout. If she gets worn out over the stove, take some of your money and treat her to a night at McDonald’s, or a frozen treat at the local ice cream stand. Remember, she’s your grandmother, not a hired chef! Maybe you can even help

me, they prefer guys who smell like Old Spice Swagger and not sewer pipe seven! Snap a few — pictures that is. Take the time to take photos of what was important to you during the week’s stay. I had no camera, just written memories. Make an album if this trek becomes a yearly occurrence! Make sure you date the back of the photo and write a brief description. You know, for future reference. My grandparents lived in a simple house, in a simple neighborhood, in a simple town. I wish I could tell you about romping in the Hamptons or rubbing elbows with the Kennedys. Wrong gene pool, but it’s quite alright. The walks to the playground or to dinner with them made it special. At night, on their porch, before bed, we looked at the Scranton skyline. All the neighbors were on their porch, each and every night. They met with each other the way people do Facebook now — except that was faceto-face and laugh-to-laugh. I can only hope my nephew brings good, deep memories from a weeklong stay at the “grandparent hotel.” At first, I thought the differences from then to now would be too great to even compare, but I was royally wrong. He will tell me about the girls he met, the books he read, and the pies he baked. In an ever-changing world, I am happy we can relate.

prepare a meal with her. That’s called bonding, not binding. I suggest baking a pie. Find the mailbox. Bored silly after day number three of seven? Find some stationary (that’s paper and envelopes) and write to your friends at home. Use street addresses and not email ones. This will enable you to master penmanship and word utilization. Tell them about all the fine girls you met and all the caramel corn you ate. Tell them your gram lives in a mansion and has real, live servants. Draw them a picture of it. Read some books. Your grandmother’s stash of reading material may be contained to AARP periodicals and some old novels, but you can bring your own or find the local library to explore. There’s bound to be a rainy day thrown in there at some point, so use it to your brains advantage, and read a good book that stirs the soul. Your teachers will also appreciate it! Wash your armpits. Just because your mother isn’t around to force the issue of personal hygiene, please brush your teeth and floss daily. Use deodorant. Shower and shampoo on a daily basis, especially when it’s humid outside. Change your underwear; don’t recycle it by wearing them inside out. Clip your nails. Be neat and presentable as the “stranger from Williamsport.” Remember a few paragraphs ago about the girls? Trust

Tips for Welcoming a Feline To the Family

I

ntroducing a feline into the family can be an exciting time, but it’s important to remember that a new home is often a big change for a little cat. Whether it’s a kitten or an adult cat, providing your new pet with proper nutrition, the comforts of a good home and engaging playtime are just a few of the key things to keep in mind. Try these simple tips from the experts at the TEMPTATIONS(tm) brand to help ensure a smooth transition for your new four-legged family member. Cat-Proof the House In addition to being constantly curious, cats are also instinctive climbers, meaning no surface is out of reach for your new pet. Make sure any potentially dangerous items - such as wires,

cleaning supplies and sharp objects - are behind closed doors and inaccessible to your little climber. You can also provide a scratching post to help prevent your cat from scratching unwanted things, like your furniture. Playtime is a Must As little as 15-30 minutes of exercise and activity per day can help your cat stay energetic and in shape. Encourage your See FELINE on Page 16

cat’s natural curiosity with engaging toys, such as the TEMPTATIONS(tm) SNACKY MOUSE(tm) Toy. Simply fill the mouse-shaped wobble toy with your cat’s favorite TEMPTATIONS treats and watch them entertain themselves by trying to knock the treats out of the toy and gobble them up. Playing together can also help strengthen the bond between owner and pet. Create Some Comfort Make your new friend truly feel like part of the family by giving him or her a personal spot in the house. A simple bed to call his own, a cat tree to view his new surroundings and some soft toys to play with are all it takes to provide the initial comfort to make your pet feel safe and welcome in a new home. For cats that prefer privacy when they’re

not playing, a covered or hooded bed is a great option. Fuel Your Feline Taking care of your cat’s health starts with proper nutrition. Be sure to find a high-quality cat food that has recipes that are nutritionally tailored to meet the specialized needs of your cat. A brand like IAMS(tm) Cat Food fits that bill and has dry and wet cat food options for all stages of life, from kitten to senior, as well as options to aid in oral care, hairball care, high protein, digestion and metabolism. Whether it’s a scratch behind the ear, a nice brushing or a sweet cuddle session, your cat can feel loved and safe, knowing he or she is in good, caring hands. (Family Features & Temptations)

They speak in code. Let’s be careful to try to understand everything they say and if you don’t understand, make them explain it. For example, ‘plateaued’, ‘discharged from therapy’, and ‘not benefitting’, when applied to services in a skilled nursing facility these words may all mean Medicare is no longer paying for the stay and the patient has become a self-pay patient at $10,000/month. Similarly, when signing a contract for care be sure you have not obligated yourself as ‘responsible party’ to pay for the cost of care. In addition, be careful you have not contracted to pay for an entire month in the facility if the patient leaves early. Assisted living facilities are very reluctant to refund a portion of a month even if a physician orders the patient’s transfer from the assisted living facility to a hospital or nursing home. This is complicated business that few people have the training and experience to understand, which can make the first encounter with an Assisted Living Facility or Nursing Home intimidating. At Greevy & Shoemaker we work with all of the local nursing homes on a daily basis and can explain to you what is the normal course, and intercede for you or on your behalf in dealing with the nursing home rules and language.

or many years a tabernacle building stood at Montoursville’s Indian Park, going back to the days when it was the Starr Island Amusement Park. This tabernacle was eventually torn down and reconstructed at the Lamar Lighthouse Camp along Route 64 in Clinton County, two miles southwest of Exit 173 of Interstate 80. Now, some 70 years later, the Tabernacle wood is splitting, deteriorating, shifting, etc. Several professionals have rendered their advice that the building is not repairable and needs to be replaced. They have had to stop using the building because of safety concerns. A fundraising effort is being conducted to fund these repairs. The

amount needed to make these repairs is about $200,000. The fundraising event will be held on Saturday, July 21 from 1 to 7 p.m. at the camp along Route 64. The fundraiser will consist of a chicken bar-b-q, prepared and served by some nearby Amish that have a heart for the camp and want to see it continue. A baked goods sale, two gospel concerts by “Renewal” at 1:30 p.m. and at 5:30 by “Gospel Bond.” An auction at 3 p.m., pony rides, a petting “zoo,” kids’ games and a yard sale with local vendors. The camp is an independent camp and is supported solely by private individuals who have a passion for keeping the camp open and functioning. Lynette Trick who is one of the

Gospel concerts are held every Sunday evening from June to September. There

is a week of family camp held in July. Often used for family reunions and other special events. Churches and other organizations can rent the facilities. “My maternal grandfather and my father were part of the “crew” that dis-assembled, moved and re-assembled the building,” Trick told Webb Weekly. “It’s sad that “the family camp experience” seems to be of less importance in today’s

society. Most of my fondest, childhood, summer memories are from being at camp.” Trick provided some historical information about the tabernacle. In the late 1930’s/early 1940’s, “Tabernacle” was one of the first buildings (gift shop) at Starr Island, Montoursville. Starr Island was an amusement park where Indian Park is now. After the amusement park closed, Bill Young used the building for revival meetings. In 1947, the Tabernacle was dis-as-

From the family of Leroy Sullivan We extend a heartfelt thank-you for the outpouring of love, prayers, and caring during the loss of an amazing husband, Dad, Grandad, brother, uncle, and friend. A special thank you to Mike Hacker and McCarty-Thomas Funeral Home, who went above and beyond to accommodate all of us. Thank you also to our Local VFWs and Legions for presenting the graveside Military honors, Pastor Cinda for providing the service, and the Hughesville Volunteer Fire Department for use of the fire hall for lunch and fellowship. Thank you to those who sent flowers, food, and experssions of sympathy. Words cannot adequately express the gratitude we have for the love shown, as it is a testament to the wonderful man he was and caring community we are a part of. While our hearts are sad that he is gone, we find comfort and joy in the fact that he is now at peace with our Lord, Jesus Christ.

County Hall Corner Nothing Happened By Larry Stout

A

rule in the journalistic world is that if it bleeds, it leads. Truth be told, the more sensational, the more likely the public will want to hear it and read about it. Webb Weekly is a different kind of newspaper in that it actually believes that many people like to read about ‘good’ things as well as the tragedies, crises, messes, problems, hangups, and other dramas that fill our airways, tabloids, and electronic media gadgets. This thought went through my mind during the return of the County Commissioners after their July 4th break. There were no meetings the week of the 4th, so when they returned to hold their work session on July 10th, it might have been expected that there was a backlog of items or problems to solve. Actually, the opposite was the case. The meeting was quite routine, nothing really happened. Yet behind the scenes, a lot has to happen for nothing to happen. The Commissioners opened the meeting as usual by going through the bills that needed to be paid for that week. Board Chairman Jack McKernan was a

little concerned that the totals did not quite add up, but Chief Clerk Matt McDermott offered an explanation that seemed to resolve the discrepancy. Later in the meeting, Matt explained that an item of equipment that was being purchased listed as “pre-owned” actually was a demo model that had hardly been used at all, which meant a savings of almost $8000. Matt sits at the end of the table and rarely opens his mouth. The reason is that he is not a part of the deliberations. But, in the simple examples shown above, Matt had the necessary background information that possibly saved the Commissioners many hours of extra work. Nothing happened, because one man had done his homework and was ready when the

COUNTY HALL time came. Another example was the biggest money item on the agenda; approval for a $1,727,099 MATP grant agreement with the PA Department of Human Services. This is obviously a LOT of money, but it’s from the state and not out of the county budget. The Medical Assistance Transportation Program, also known as MATP, provides transportation to medical appointments for Medical Assistance recipients who do not have transportation available to them. This may be through STEP vehicles or supplying bus passes. It covers

64,000 transportation trips (!) for the year. Here again, there could be lots and lots of questions and maybe even controversies about a program of this magnitude. But again, it was reviewed with very little discussion, because Jim Plankenhorn, President & CEO of STEP, Inc. took time out of his very busy schedule to attend the meeting and simply outline the program, and also note that there have been considerable savings since a requirement has been made that medical services must be sought from the nearest qual-

— nothing happened. During the primary election on May 15th, severe storms hit about 2:00 in the afternoon and seven precincts lost power. Yet, the Department of Voter Services had equipped fresh batteries in all the electronic voting machines, so there was no immediate problem. Forrest notified John Yingling, Director of Public Safety, who went about to ensure that emergency generators were made available. There was a lot of work by a lot of people, but instead of closed polls and possible lost votes, the voting continued without a glitch. Nothing happened. Sometimes, the best thing that can happen is for nothing to happen.

So, instead of a contentious debate, nothing of the sort happened. Recognizing the worth of a viable program and one that waste, fraud, and abuse are being addressed made the measure one that will be easy to approve at the regular meeting. Perhaps the best example is one from a few weeks ago when Forrest K. Enjoy a Safe and Injury Free Summer By Tony Bixby, BS, NRP, CCEMT-P, FP-C Director of Prehospital Services, Susquehanna Regional EMS UPMC Susquehanna

S

ummer is in full swing and the nice weather means more opportunities for outdoor fun. Activities like camping, picnicking, hiking, swimming, yard work, and boating all present the potential for serious unintended injuries. It’s important to know how to stay safe and fun while enjoying the great outdoors. Beware of Heat Stroke Avoid strenuous activity during the peak

of the day. Heat and humidity can lead to a heat stroke, a life-threatening condition in which the body’s core temperature rises above 104 degrees F. Stay cool with these tips: Drink plenty of water before, during, and after exercise, sports, or other strenuous activities. Take frequent breaks to rehydrate, and drink fluids (except coffee, alcohol, and tea) even if you do not feel thirsty. During these breaks seek shade and give your body a break from the exposure. Wear lightweight and breathable clothing to help your body shed excess heat. It’s important to know the signs of heat

stroke. If you or someone you know is experiencing symptoms similar to those of a heart attack, such as high body temperature, rapid pulse, confusion and difficulty breathing, they may be suffering from a heat stroke. Get the person to a shady area and apply cool water to the skin. Call 9-1-1 immediately. Stay Safe During Water Activities On hot summer days, there is no better way to cool off, exercise, and have fun than to participate in water sports such as waterskiing, diving, jet skiing, snorkeling, surfing, parasailing, or swimming in a pool. Regardless of your skill level, take precaution before participating in watersports: Learn how to swim by taking professional swimming lessons.

While boating or swimming in open water, always wear a life jacket. No matter your skill level at the sport or swimming, you need to wear one. If someone is unconscious due to an injury, the life vest will keep them afloat and help them survive. Never go into the water alone. Watch children constantly. Drowning is the second leading cause of death for children between the ages of 1 and 14. Children can get into trouble very quickly and generally are not as strong swimmers as adults. Don’t Get Caught in a Thunderstorm With sunny summer days also come thunderstorms. Lightning strikes cause hundreds of permanent disabilities each year. Knowing what to do when caught in a storm is crucial to injury prevention: If there is no nearby shelter or vehicles,

preferably downwind. Build only a small, manageable fire. Talk to children about campfire safety. Keep children at a safe distance with a “safety circle” at least 4 feet from the fire edge. Make sure you have water available before building the fire in case of emergency. Even if the fire is out, there’s still danger. Seventy percent of campfire burns are caused by embers rather than flames. Fire pits retain heat up to 12 hours after being extinguished—hot enough to cause a severe burn. Humans cause nine of every 10 wildfires. Make sure campfires are permitted in your area. No matter what you do to have fun this summer, make safety your top priority.

move from hills or peaks to a level or valley area. Never lie flat on the ground, and do not use a tree or cliff for shelter. Stay away from objects that conduct electricity, such as wire fences and power lines, and move away from ponds, lakes, and other bodies of water. If you are with a group of people, spread out. Do your best to plan ahead to avoid being outdoors during a storm. Don’t Be Burned by Campfires or Firepits The best summer nights include gatherings around campfires where we share stories, make smores, or just enjoy the ambiance. Relax and enjoy keeping these tips in mind: Build your fire at least 15 feet away from your tent, home, or other structure

ayden’s Heart Sixth Annual Golf Outing will be held Friday, July 27 at White Deer Golf Course, Montgomery, to raise funds for Timothy Wooldridge and family from Bellevue, PA. Less than a year old, Timothy is currently waiting for a heart transplant after being diagnosed with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS). The golf tournament is a fundraising event organized by Hayden’s Heart Inc., a nonprofit created by Rob and Ady (Smith) Dorsett, formerly of Williamsport, whose son died of a congenital heart defect in August 2012 at five months old. In the past five years, Hayden’s Heart golf tournaments in particular have raised approximately $70,000 and supported over ten heart families. The mission of Hayden’s Heart is to raise congenital heart disease awareness, help keep Hayden’s memory alive, and to assist families with their immense medical bills and travel expenses. it and be sure to exfoliate the following morning. Actually, you should exfoliate every day. Dead skin cells accumulate daily, and the buildup can leave skin looking dull. Daily exfoliation not only sloughs off dry skin but can also stimulate collagen production to firm the face and keep it bright and plump. Be careful not to overdo on the harsh scrubs. Look for gentle cleansers that exfoliate without drying your skin. Lastly, wear sunscreen, even on gray days. Everyone should wear SPF 30 or higher to protect their skin from UV rays. This becomes even more important

CHANGE IS GOOD.

everal years ago, a landowner whom I have known for quite some time, approached me about helping him design and develop a food plot. He owns 120 acres, which included 50 acres of open fallow fields, and a wooded area of about 70 acres that stretched up a hillside and across a top, where it bordered other property owners. After cruising the property, and based on the terrain, we decided on a location on the top, in the woods, which would require dropping numerous red oak, chestnut oak, maple, and black birch trees, resulting in an opening of about one acre. The plot would be oval in shape, with additional trees dropped on the western side to provided added sunlight in the evening hours. Once the trees were dropped and cut for firewood, the remaining tops would be chipped. The huckleberries, mountain laurel, and other brush would be chopped up with a brush hog. That was the plan to create the opening for the food plot. Work began in early June, over several weekends, as a crew of friends and neighbors joined in to drop the trees and cut and split firewood. The remaining tops were chipped in a process that took about four hours and provided several piles of chips that would decay and be used later for mulching material for any seedlings that might be added to the outside edges

of the plot. Next, the stumps that remained had to be addressed. Old stumps from trees that were cut years earlier were able to be removed with the front end loader of a 50 horsepower tractor, but the fresh tree stumps would not budge. These were trimmed as flush to the ground as possible and then covered with a layer of 46-0-0 nitrogen to expedite the decaying process. Limbs and logs left over from timbering 15 years earlier were gathered and moved to one large pile at the western end of the clearing, where they would rot down over the years and eventually turn into soil that could be added to the food plot in future years. A small tractor pulling a stone rake was then used to clear the smaller limbs and debris and level the seedbed, as well as fill in the holes created by the stump removal. The landowner had considered piling all of this debris into one huge pile in the center of the plot and burning it, but safety, manpower, and liability issues determined that burning would not be a good alternative. A soil sample had been taken before the project had begun, and since the existing soil was of poor quality, the landowner had two large loads of topsoil and mushroom soil mix delivered, then spread over the entire area using a tractor with a front-end loader and stone rake. Pelletized nitrogen, phosphorus, potash, and lime were spread and worked in with the use of a 4-foot drag

harrow pulled behind a 4-wheeler. Seeding was done by hand since there was only about an acre to cover. First, buckwheat seed was applied over the entire acre, and then some leftover clover seed was distributed (while it is not the ideal time to apply clover seed, it was a good opportunity to use up the seed). Sugar beet seed and a mix of seeds of chicory, rape, turnips, and brassicas from the Whitetail Institute were added. As the last step, the entire seedbed was tamped down using an old crow’s foot cultipacker pulled behind the 4-wheeler. That final step occurred on Monday, July 9, and left only one thing to aid the process of creating a successful food plot — rain. Lo and behold, the very next day, blue skies gave way in the afternoon to thunderstorm

I wouldn’t months of the year including these hot describe the river bass fishing as summer days and I fish for a variety of “hot,” but if you pick and choose fish species all year long. it can be fun for the experienced fishermen. I love to fly fish, and a fly rod for bluegills has provided nonstop action in some cases on farm ponds; it’s also been a great choice for bass. Don’t rule out some good largemouth fishing with other gear either. A Texas-rigged plastic worm, a creature bait or under the right circumstances a surface lure can provide some “hot” fishing. Hope you find some hot fishing this summer, and I don’t mean just temperature wise.

be hot sitting in an aluminum boat on a bright, sunny day with temps in the 90s but the same may not apply to the fish catching. Again, I have had some fair success catching bass but warming water temperatures on a hot, sunny day can make catching more difficult. Going early or late or heading out on overcast or even rainy days may improve your chances. You may also want to fish deep or even after dark for bass. Of course, anywhere you go this time of year the act of fishing will be hot, but the catching may not be “hot.” To be honest, some of the “hottest” fishing right now may well be in farm ponds. I would still watch my timing; early or late in the day may be best but farm ponds can actually provide some good mid-summer fishing, and this is especially true if you are willing to be versatile. I’ve said it before; my approach to fishing is very versatile — I fish for a lot of different species of fish, and that includes panfish. Panfishing in farm ponds in summer can be downright hot both temperature wise and from a catching standpoint. Not only can the fishing be great for a youngster or someone new to fishing

Whether they are working for the team that they played for, doing radio and TV work, or other commitments, it is sometimes difficult for them to get away to come to Williamsport. “Bringing in a player for our Grand Slam Parade is something separate from the activities organized by Little League International. Obviously, we are aware of the type of people we bring in. We are not going to bring in somebody that ‘has issues’ associated with them. There are people in the Hall of Fame that have questionable character. We are keenly aware that we are doing this as part of a celebration of Little League Baseball, and we are not going to bring in somebody that would be inappropriate for this type of a celebration.” The players invited to come to Williamsport as the Parade Grand Marshall agree to take part in a variety of activities in addition to the parade itself. Prior to the start of the parade, they meet the Little World Series players at a picnic held in their honor at Penn College. They attend a sponsor’s reception at the

uring warm-weather months, fitness enthusiasts often take their exercise routines to the great outdoors. The spike in summer temperatures can make those tough workouts even more challenging. Even after your workout is complete, your body does not stop - after a

tough sweat session in the summer heat, you need to replenish what you lost to rebuild and refuel muscles. A tall glass of chocolate milk may not be the first thing you think to reach for after a long run, but recovering from each intense workout with the nutrients in low-fat chocolate milk allows you to get the most out of your fitness routine.

Be Mindful of High Temperatures High temperatures don’t have to get in the way of your workout plan, but it’s important to consider the heat index and time of day when exercising. Temperatures typically peak during the middle of the day, so aim to work out in the morning or once the sun starts to set. The body loses a lot of important

nutrients through sweat. Learn your sweat rate by weighing yourself with minimal clothing before and after one hour of sweaty exercise. One pound of sweat loss equals 16 ounces of fluid loss. This can guide your fluid intake during your next workout. Replenish What You Lose in Sweat After putting in real work this summer, your body needs real recovery. Recovery after strenuous exercise can make a difference in how well you can perform during your next workout. For example, low-fat

chocolate milk helps replenish fluids and electrolytes lost in sweat. In fact, drinking low-fat or fat-free milk after exercise could restore hydration better than other popular postexercise beverages, including water or sports drinks, according to a study published in the “American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.” Plus, chocolate milk has a 3-to-1 carb-to-protein ratio scientifically shown to refuel and rebuild muscles quickly. Shield Yourself from the Sun’s Rays Just because your fitness routine

MURRAY

includes strenuous laps in a pool or a run through shady trails doesn’t mean you are protected from the sun. Apply sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher to your face, neck, ears and body before exercising outdoors. If you’re going back out for another round of laps in the pool or around the track, reapply sunscreen 20-30 minutes before getting back to work. While summer weather provides many opportunities for fresh air and fitness, it’s important to remember these tips and more for healthy hydration. (Family Features & MilkPEP)

Quentin Mazzante might have been able to qualify for multiple positions for this team. He played wherever his team needed him and always seemed to do it with a smile on his face. He was the constant team player. He scored the tying run in Williamsport’s 4-3 win over Newberry. He also scored runs against Loyalsock and Montoursville and recorded a hit against Keystone in the District 12 Championship game. Center: Klyher Allis, Williamsport Allis used his speed to near perfection throughout the tournament. He was a constant threat on the bases and always seemed to be able to get to the ball in centerfield. He pitched for Williamsport and played shortstop. Allis hit a double and scored twice against Loyalsock, but was at his best against East Lycoming. He went five innings, tossing a shutout and helping Williamsport pickup a 3-2 win. Right: Kevin Grenninger, Keystone Grenninger was outstanding in the field for Keystone. He was also a player always ready to help. He came on as a pinch runner on multiple occasions to give Keystone an edge on the bases. He scored two runs in the winner’s bracket final against Montoursville. DH: Niko Rotoli, Montoursville Rotoli was another player that could have made the team at multiple spots. He was without question one of the top hitters in the tournament. He had a home run during a game against Williamsport, but connected with two on his way to finishing with five RBIs against Montgomery. Rotoli also displayed versatility, coming on to pitch and play first for Montoursville.

Pitchers: Makai Day, Williamsport; Gabriel Johnson, Keystone Makai Day showed exactly what he was all about during the opening game of the tournament. He tossed five solid innings against Keystone to keep Williamsport in the game. After that, he connected with a game-winning hit against Newberry and continued to be Williamsport’s No. 1 pitcher. Gabriel Johnson matched Day throughout both games against Williamsport. Johnson was outstanding in the title game, going 5 2/3 innings, giving up just four hits, and leading his team to a 4-2 win over Williamsport. First: Gavin Allen, Newberry Gavin Allen stood out throughout the District 12 Tournament in more ways than one. He was an outstanding first baseman, but he was also one of the tallest kids in the tournament. Against Jersey Shore/GSV he connected with two hits and walked three times to help his team pick up an extra-innings win. In the first inning, he drove two runs in with a single to help Newberry get on the board. In the eighth inning, he drew his third walk of the game and later scored to give Newberry a 6-5 win. He was outstanding at first, providing a large target for his fielders. He also came in for pitching duties.

he District 12 Tournament has come to an end, and Keystone will be representing the District at the next level. It was an outstanding tournament that saw plenty of good baseball games and players. There were grand slams, masterful pitching performances, and the ultra-rare triple play turned. In the first round of the tournament, Keystone and Williamsport played. Keystone won that matchup, but Williamsport made a run for the ages to return to the Championship. Keystone once again defeated Williamsport to win the Tournament. Those were some of the highlights. Here’s the list of players that make up the Webb Weekly’s All-Tournament team for District 12: Catcher: Deacon Brown, Williamsport Brown broke out late in the tournament but made his impact felt throughout the tail end of Williamsport’s run through the loser’s bracket. Brown, who also caught all six innings in the game, laced a single to the wall and helped score a run during Williamsport’s comeback win over Newberry. From that point on he was one of the most dominant hitters in the tournament. Brown closed out the tournament going 3-for-8 with a double, two home runs, three runs scored, and eight runs batted in.

He was also a difficult player to get out. He went 3-for-5 with a double, two runs scored, and another five RBsI over Keystone’s final two game of the tournament. Third: Jaden Wilson, Montoursville Jaden Wilson held down the hot corner for Montoursville as it navigated its way through the brackets. Wilson played the bunt well and was outstanding at the plate.
