Thank you, hunters, for sharing your harvest with us and allowing us to see what’s roaming around in Penns Woods. Our winner this year is Mr. Howard Smith. His tank of a buck was a 9 point with a 23 1/2inch spread! Scoring 158 by Sierra Club International standards. Howard receives a free shoulder mount courtesy of my good friends at Poust Taxidermy. Dana has been with us since the beginning of the contest, and I thank him for his efforts. He is also the official scorer and does an incredible job preserving that memory of a lifetime. SIX HOURS, ONE FRIDAY

To the casual observer the six hours are mundane. A shepherd with his sheep, a housewife with her thoughts, a doctor with his patients. But to the handful of awestruck witnesses the maddening of miracle is occurring. God is on a Cross. The creator of the universe is being executed. It is no normal six hours…it is no normal Friday. I

don’t normally like to do recipes two weeks in a row. But I’m making an exception. Wanna know why? Because this recipe made the whole family happy, and I just have to share it! So, this is what happened, right? Last Tuesday I was trying to figure out what to make for dinner. It’s one of the few nights of the week, we don’t really have anything happening, so I have more time to full-out cook, as opposed to doing something in the slow cooker, or having Steve make tacos. I knew I had chicken thawed, but that was where my thoughts on dinner pretty much dried up. I decided to check out the website myfridgefood. com. Essentially, the site works like this: you tell it what ingredients you have on hand, and it will give you recipes that you can make with those ingredients. This is nice, because no stopping at the grocery store on the way home to pick up a couple of things, and it’s a great way to use up stuff you have at home (particularly if it’s use-it-or-lose-it time.)

So, I popped in the stuff I was 95% sure I had at home and looked at what I could do. Up pops what I Steph think will be the Nordstrom winner — Cheesy Smothered Chicken. Yep! Let’s do this. Everything about the recipe sounded great, it fit in with Steve’s keto diet and it has bacon. And Kiddo absolutely loved it! You can’t really go wrong with any of this! Again, when a recipe hits as much as this one, you have to share — so here y’all go! Cheesy Smothered Chicken: Ingredients: • 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts • 6 bacon slices • 1/4 cup yellow mustard • 1/3 cup honey • 2 tablespoons mayo • 2 tsp. dried onion flakes • 1 cup sliced mushrooms (point of honesty, I didn’t actually have these,

I thought I did, but I was wrong, so I just skipped them!) • 2 cups shredded Colby/jack cheese Directions: While the chicken is in the refrigerator, cook bacon in a large skillet until crisp. Since you are going to crumble the bacon later, I usually find it easier to cut the bacon into pieces before you cook them. I just use kitchen shears to cut the slices up. Remove bacon and set aside. Do not discard grease. Sauté chicken in the bacon grease for 3 to 5 minutes per side, or until browned. Place chicken in a 9” X 13” casserole dish or pan. To make the Honey Mustard: In a small bowl, mix the mustard, honey, mayonnaise and dried onion flakes. I also added Worcestershire sauce just because it sounded good. Spread the honey mustard over each piece of chicken, then layer with mushrooms, crumbled bacon, and shredded cheese. Bake in a 350 degrees oven for 30 minutes, or until cheese is melted and chicken is done.

Adaptive Bikes and Equipment for Children With Special Needs By Dave Bellomo

Are You

Retirement Ready? Planning for retirement can be a full time job. I know, I do it daily for clients, examining all the options: tax and income planning, retirement and estate planning. I have 39 years experience working with Federal (FERS) & (CSRS) state (PSERS) & (SERS) and public employees to make the most of their retirement income.

I want to help, come in for a FREE complimentary consultation.

LaST IU #17, of Williamsport, and Variety, of Pittsburgh, have teamed up to offer adaptive bikes, strollers, and communication equipment to qualifying children with special needs. Their goal is to provide 1,000 eligible children with FREE adaptive equipment through Variety’s My Bike, My Stroller, and My Voice programs. Back in January 2019, Mr. Charlie LaValle, CEO/President of Variety - The Children’s Charity contacted BLaST with an opportunity to join their service territory. Variety is a Pittsburgh based children’s charity that provides unique programs, experiences, and equipment to children with disabilities throughout 65 counties in Pennsylvania and West Virginia. In order to join the Variety service region, BLaST had to raise enough funds to cover the cost of five adaptive bikes at a total of 9,500.00. The IU 17 leadership team quickly went to work in securing sponsorships from local businesses and within two weeks was able to reach the goal. Together with Variety and local

THE

school districts, BLaST was able to give away ten custom fit, adaptive bikes to children and families at the IU In-Service held in August of 2019. Tim Hanner, Assistant Director of Student Services, recalls “it was truly a priveledge to see the children receive their bikes. Our employees lined the sidewalk and cheered as many of them took their first ride - this experience was something we will never forget!” In response, Variety formally recognized BLaST as part of their service region. This means that ANY eligible child ages 3-21 from Bradford, Lycoming, Sullivan, and Tioga Counties can receive FREE customized equipment including strollers, bikes, and digital communication devices. Eligible children must have a diagnosed physical, mental, and/ or sensory disability or, for the communication devices, the child must have a documented communication disorder. Families must also meet lowto-middle range income guidelines as identified in the application. For example, a family of four must make less than $128,750 to be eligible. My Bike currently provides eligible children with special needs with

a Rifton adaptive bicycle that is individually customized so they may have the freedom and joy of riding a bike alongside friends and family. My Stroller currently provides Kid Kart Mighty Lite adaptive strollers to special needs children for mobility and/or safety. Often, families must choose between the necessity of a wheelchair or the convenience and mobility of an adaptive stroller, as buying both can be cost prohibitive. Thus, many go without strollers. With an adaptive stroller, some kids are able to interact and participate in activities that are not possible with a wheelchair. For others, having an adaptive stroller may allow kids to stay safe and secure while out in the community. My Voice program provides a restricted iPad with a prescribed communication app to children with a communication disorder to give them a voice and to express their thoughts, feelings, and wants. Variety’s My Bike program began in Western Pennsylvania in 2012 and the success of the program eventually led to the creation of My Stroller and My Voice programs in 2014. To date, over 3,000 adaptive bikes, adaptive strollers, and communication devices, with a value of over $4.8 million, have been sponsored for special needs children. The eligibility guidelines make it easy

ducating students these days can be a challenging and complex thing. One entity that is helping area schools to meet these challenges with technical and various other types of support is the BLaST Intermediate Unit 17. BLaST IU 17 is one of 29 Intermediate Units (IUs) across the Commonwealth. IUs were created in 1971 as an act of the General Assembly to serve as educational services agencies. Over the last almost fifty years, IU 17’s services have grown and changed. Yet, their mission is still focused on providing educational services to public and non-public schools across Bradford, Lycoming, Sullivan, and Tioga Counties. ‘BLaST’ is an acronym representing our four-county service region of Bradford, Lycoming, Sullivan, and Tioga counties. BLaST IU 17 is the largest geographic IU in PA, covering almost 4,000 square miles. They serve 19 public schools, two career centers, and 12 non-public schools. BLaST’s vision is to ‘transform lives and communities through educational services.’ With a staff of almost 400 employees, they provide services within three major

divisions: student services, educational planning, and technology. Within each of these divisions, BLaST’s highly-skilled staff fulfill their daily mission to provide, create, and facilitate high-quality educational solutions. The Division of Student Services is the largest division, providing direct services to students ages birth to age 21 in the areas of early intervention, alternative education, partial hospitalization programs, special education classrooms, one-on-one job coaching, and itinerant services such as speech and occupational therapy. Amy Wolfhope-Briggs, Director of Student Services, told Webb Weekly, “As a regional educational service agency, IU 17 is fortunate to partner with our constituent districts to transform the lives of students with diverse abilities through the provision of high-quality special education services. Our staff is very talented, dedicated individuals who strive to not only bring out the best in our children but also support their families through their knowledge and expertise”. Without BLaST, many students and families would not have access to essential services that improve the quality of life for students, families, and the entire community.

integrating online offerings in an effort to better serve our large geographic region. In accordance with BLaST’s vision of transforming lives and communities, IU 17 partnered with Variety — The Children’s Charity in an effort to provide ALL eligible children age 3-21 with FREE adaptive equipment including strollers, bikes, and communication devices. BLaST IU 17 and Variety have partnered to launch ‘Finding the Next 1,000 Kids’ — a local identification campaign to find and impact the next 1,000 eligible kids with disabilities through their FREE adaptive equipment programs. This program will be dealt with in more detail in Dave Bellomo’s article in this issue of Webb Weekly.

Faith Conversations…

Integrity

F

or those of us who lead in the Church world, integrity is essential. We can talk all we want about the mission of God and church growth and global compassion and social justice, but unless we have integrity, we’re just blowing smoke. The word integrity means to be principled, functional, sound, whole, real, transparent and trustworthy. How important is integrity? Would you drive across an earthquake-damaged bridge if a large warning sign posted at the entrance said, “This bridge has been damaged and it’s integrity has been compromised. Travel at your own risk.” I don’t know about you, but I would turn around. Why would I risk trusting a bridge that has questionable integrity? Friends, when our churches lack integrity, those we are trying to serve ask the very same question. When our churches lack integrity, we offer empty hope — like clouds that bring no rain and autumn trees that bear no fruit. See Proverbs 25:14 and Jude 1:12. The Church claims to be different — you know, holy, hopeful, loving, compassionate, friendly, forgiving, inclusive and united. We claim to be safe, honest and trustworthy. Frankly, because we follow Jesus Christ, people assume all of this and more. Between what people know about Jesus and what we advertise about ourselves, the integrity bar has been set high. Maintaining integrity requires discipline

and diligence. Integrity is fragile, really fragile. An egg shell is perfectly suited for protecting a developing critter, but it can be broken so easily — and once broken, life is lost. That may sound a bit over dramatic, but let me assure you, integrity is that important. Picture Penn State and Jerry Sandusky. PSU is still trying to recover — but more importantly, without integrity, children were abused and scarred for life. Frankly, it made our whole state look bad. It was awful. And it all happened because integrity was not maintained. Seriously, we’ve got to get this right. So what areas do we need to focus on? Here’s a list, but it is far from exhaustive: Integrity means that we are a vibrant, functional, healthy and loving Body of Christ—shepherding well the flock God has placed in our care and raising up a new generation of transformed missional disciples. This is missional integrity — and we’ve got to get it right. The world and the Kingdom of God are counting on us! Integrity means that we love each other deeply and that we guard our tongues from gossip and slander by carefully obeying the First-Person Rule as commanded by Jesus. See Matthew 18:15-20. Gossip is destructive and divisive. If you have a problem with someone, then go to them and get it straightened out — just between the two of you. That’s what Jesus said. To do anything else or anything less is sin. My guess is that

gossip is likely the most pervasive sin in the church. Gossip destroys unity and integrity. And please, don’t use the guise of “sharing prayer requests” or “I was just being concerned” as a way to cover your gossip. My mom’s rule was a simple one: if you don’t have something nice to Tim say, then say nothing at all. Hartzell Proverbs 10:19 declares that “Where words are many, sin is not far off.” Most Christians would be better off if we just talked less. Integrity means that we diligently protect our children and youth from all forms of negative influence, abuse and exploitation. No child should ever be abused while under the care of the Church. If your church doesn’t have strict policies in place that effectively protect children, then you need to get it done immediately. While gossip may be the most pervasive, child abuse is the most damaging. Jesus had strong words for those who would cause a child to stumble, “It would be better for you to have a millstone hung around your neck and to be drown in the depths of the sea.” Matthew 18:6. The most vulnerable among us are worthy of our most diligent protection. Integrity means that we guard the sanctity of marriage and preserve the dignity and purity of our brothers and sisters in Christ, avoiding even the appearance of evil. According to I Timothy 5:1-2, we are to “treat older women as mothers, and

younger women as sisters, with absolute purity.” Guys, our ladies should feel safe with us. According to God’s Word, sexual impropriety within the Body of Christ is incest. They aren’t just female, they are your mothers and sisters in Christ — treat them with respect and dignity. Integrity means that we prove to be financially trustworthy, guarding our financial processes, distributing funds as we have been directed or as we have promised, and providing financial reporting regularly and openly. The Church, above any other organization, should be completely trustworthy with money. Does your church have policies in place that guard your financial integrity? If you don’t, then get it done now. Integrity means that our decision-making processes are transparent, protected from political influence or selfish ambition, and consistently in line with basic organizational disciplines. Again, the Church should do better than any other group. One last thing. When one church fails, it casts a dark shadow over every church. When one church leader fails, it casts a dark shadow over every church leader. Sadly, due to a lack of integrity, there are a lot of shadows being cast over churches and leaders who have done nothing wrong. To those of you who have demonstrated faithfulness and integrity, thank you! Your shining example reminds us that God’s light overcomes the darkness! Keep up the good work and know that you are storing up treasure in heaven! We are grateful for you!

County Hall Corner Golf is Not a Four-Letter Word By Larry Stout

T

he Lycoming County Commissioners are moving toward selling off portions of the White Deer Golf Course area but have recently discovered a governmental glitch. It seems that due to a condition that came with receiving federal funds for the purchase of the property decades ago prevents it from being used for anything but recreational use. This apparently has only now come to light, and it was the cause of some serious handwringing by the commissioners at their Thursday, February 13th Commissioners meeting. Rest easy citizens, as all is not lost. Like all obstacles, this too will require some creative solutions but eventually will be overcome. Yet the delay will certainly add more fuel to the fire of those who believe that the county should get out of the golf business sooner than later. Those who wish the demise of the golf course should remember the adage that before you take down a fence, you should ask why it was put up in the first place. When the county established the course back in 1965, golf was the ‘in’ thing. It had become increasingly popular with telecasts of

major tournaments, and Pennsylvania laid claim to the first golf ‘superstar’ — Arnold Palmer. His dramatic style and highly competitive matches against Jack Nicolas and Gary Player were legendary. Like Tiger Woods today, Palmer drove a passionate horde of followers at each tournament that were nicknamed “Arnie’s Army.” Golf, especially in Pennsylvania, was all the rage. Golf is entertaining and athletically healthy. It is a unique game that can be played by everyone; young, old, male, female. In the mid-60s, it was not nearly as expensive as it would later become, and in fact, relatively speaking, on a public course such as White Deer, it was considered a game for the middle-class. Its most positive attribute

that generates hundreds of thousands of dollars to local non-profit organizations in the form of tournaments, are not too lightly brushed aside. The negative consequences of closing the course would also have to be considered. It is assumed that paying off the bond issue would come from sale of the land, but who will buy it? Is there a huge demand for property in Lycoming County for housing projects? Would farmers want to buy the land? If it cannot be sold for the bond debt, the difference will have to come out of tax dollars. And what of the loss of the advantages noted above? Will organizations have to go to other counties to fund-raise, or will distance prevent them from hosting golf tournament events? What other activities will generate those kind of revenues, and what impact will that have to the general community if they must cut back on those services? Would government have to make up the difference for needs that had previously been met by volunteer organizations? Would it not be ironic that in an effort to save money by selling the golf course, it ends up costing more than keeping it going? Difficult issues such as the county golf course are best seen with an awareness of the past and a keen eye on the future. This board of county commissioners appear to be doing just that.

was that it was a very healthy, outdoor exercise, especially important for older individuals. Through the decades, White Deer Golf Course served the community well. What has not been so great through those years has been management and oversight of the course. Four years ago, the Lycoming County Commissioners decided to address that problem by removing the course from the Recreation Authority and putting it into the hands of a management company, Billy Casper Golf. The result is that the course now has arguably the best management team in its history. Unfortunately, that does not remove the decades of difficulties, and since history does not give us a do-over, what we have now is a time of transition that will take some wisdom to navigate. Some grace should be shown to the Lycoming County Commissioners who have their hands full with a number of tricky problems, the golf course just one of these. But to their credit, they are looking at this with very sober eyes. Golf has declined, to be sure, but it is not like malls or video stores. Golf has been around for hundreds of years and will endure for hundreds more. The positive aspects of a community recreational resource that is profitable, (which thanks to the management of Billy Casper, it now is), that promotes health, especially for senior citizens,

This Week’s LION The Church Volunteer By Larry Stout

T

here have been lots and lots of studies done to explain the decline of volunteerism in the last few decades, attributing it to things like the breakdown of the family, increased mobility, growth of the suburbs, etc. One area that is rarely mentioned is the decrease in church membership. In previous generations, church life was the generator of a great number of community activities.

This year marks the 400th anniversary of the Pilgrims landing at Plymouth Rock. These early settlers were escaping religious persecution in England, which to the Pilgrims was much more than just Sunday morning worship. In fact, it may surprise many that in America the first schools for children, the first universities, the first hospitals, the first mental institutions, and the first prisons were all birthed out from the church. The reason that prisons were called

6 MONTH

“penitentiaries” was because these institutions were designed to make the law offender “penitent.” Lycoming County is fortunate that the churches are still a source of active volunteerism in a wide variety of areas. The key networking agency is the United Churches of Lycoming County. Formed in 1946 out of the Williamsport Ministerium, it was designed to bring clergy and laity together to serve the city and adjoining area. Next year it will be celebrating its seventy-fifth year of existence, and it has grown to involve a vast variety of community services. Since 1991, the director has been Gwen Bernstein, who has continually expanded the fantastic work of United Churches of Lycoming County, and it has been staggering. They have outreaches to the colleges, the prisons, and a food pantry for those who have trouble making ends meet. In 1988, United Churches began the ministry of Shepherd of the Streets to provide spiritual and material help to those confronting fear, hunger, homelessness, unemployability or other difficulties. In 1989, United Churches began the Interfaith Hospitality Network that has developed today into Family Promise, an organization designed to help families cope with temporary housing problems. Forty years ago, United Churches began the hospital chaplaincy program and fully funded the chaplain.

Suicide Prevention HelpLine all started at United Churches of Lycoming County. Gwen Bernstein has been the guiding force behind all this work. And she does not just administrate these programs, which is more than a full-time job in itself, she is also an active participant as well. An original program that United Churches initiated back in 1946 was holding church services for nursing homes. Today, they provide 600 services a year to the dozen nursing homes of Lycoming County, and Beth not only coordinates the schedule but also conducts five services a month herself. Obviously, Beth and the work of United Churches could use more help. Already between 500 to 1000 volunteers are utilized for the vast array of United Churches involvements, but more are always needed. Those interested could visit a nursing home, write an editorial, donate some time to help out the food pantry or at the Shepherd of the Street office, and even golfers could help greatly by getting a four-some together for the annual fund-raiser golf tournament at White Deer Golf Course on September 25th. More information about any of these opportunities can be found at the website: uclc.org or by calling Rev. Gwen N. Bernstein, Executive Director or Mrs. Patty Gohrs, Administrative Assistant at 570-3221110.

Gazette and Bulletin February 16, 1951 No TV Rebroadcasting in City, Spokesman Says

Complied by Lou Hunsinger Jr.

N

o radio station had been rebroadcasting television programs in Williamsport, Frank O. Bowers, 350 Clayton Ave., said last night when asked about the suspension of John M. Vandling’s operator’s license for amateur radio station W3K31. Mr.Vandling could not be reached for comment as he was in New York on business yesterday and is not expected to return until tomorrow. Mr. Bowers said an application for a permit to operate a television relay station had been submitted to the FCC, but as yet no answer has been received from the commission. He pointed out that some experiments were carried out with the possibility of bringing

television to Williamsport. Mr. Vandling and Mr. Bowers had an appointment with a representative from the FCC several months ago how the experiments were to be carried out and results that were obtained. “Under no circumstances could the experiments conducted be considered broadcasting,” Mr. Bowers said. The commission said the suspension and revocation of the two licenses was because Mr. Vandling had participated in the picking up and rebroadcasting of television programs from WFIL in Philadelphia. The order made it possible for the local man to request a hearing within 15 days in which case the order would be held in abeyance pending completion of proceedings.

With the other half pack of chicken, I buy McCormick’s Seasonings in the packets and freeze it like that. (I love the Garlic Herb and Wine and Bourbon!) I cut all those into strips, then when I pull it out of the freezer, we throw it on the grill, or you could bake it. I usually serve it with a side of pasta and steamable or fresh roasted veggies. If you aren’t a chicken person, I have lots of other great freezer meal ideas on my website at www. andreascountryhomecookin.com like; Crock-Pot Creamy Ranch Pork Chops, Easy and Tasty Meatloaf, Lasagna RollUps and more! but try recognizing the out-of-the-box moments during Lent this year. Things like “Thank you for always making sure all the lights are off before you come to bed.” Or “I really appreciate how you hold the door open for Mommy as I’m getting the mail.” Try to also say important things, especially to your children. I like to acknowledge when my daughter overcomes a challenge (even a small one) to let her know that I’m proud of her, and she should also be proud of herself. Whether you go all-in on a spiritual reexamination or merely give up chocolate this Lenten season, the hope is for some aspect of your life — your heart, habits, or home — will be rejuvenated and ready for spring.

us that have that 3 p.m. Diet Coke this is a small but still meaningful sacrifice to make during Lent. If not soda specifically, try abstaining from after-dinner snacks or replacing chocolate breaks with banana breaks. It helps when you give up something to substitute it with a healthier or more affordable option. For example, make coffee at home instead of buying it on the way to work. Instead of ordering pizza, try making pizzas with frozen dough. Find that one relatively harmless indulgence and go without for the next six weeks. Instead of giving up something, you can always add something positive to your day. I love the idea of complimenting your spouse and kids daily. Now, you may normally say nice things to your family all the time,

The Bookworm Sez SOLD OUT EVERYWHERE!!!

“The End of Something Wonderful” by Stephanie V.W. Lucianovic, illustrated by George Ermos c.2019, Sterling Children’s Books 16.95 / $22.95 Canada 32 pages

Y

ou’re really going to miss your little pet. He hasn’t been feeling well lately, and you know that the worst thing is coming soon. You’re not sure how you’ll act and you’re not sure what you’ll do when it happens, but in the new book “The End of Something Wonderful” by Stephanie V.W. Lucianovic, illustrated by George Ermos, you’ll get some ideas. When something is dead, it means that it “was once alive but isn’t any longer.” Your Something Dead is loved very much, and you’re going to miss it a lot so maybe later, it would help to have a funeral in your back yard. Your Something Dead would’ve liked that, if you’d asked – but even if you didn’t, he knows how much you wish he was still around, though neither of you have the words to say so. First, you’ll want to find a box. A shoebox will probably work fine, and you may want to put some tissue, or a small piece of cloth inside for your Something

Dead to lay on. Next, you’ll need a hole in the ground. Ask a grown-up for help, especially if your Something Dead is “really big, like a hippopotamus or a narwhal.” Be sure not to bury something that’s not quite dead. That’s really rude. At the funeral, it’s okay to talk about your Something Dead and how wonderful your friendship was. Sing some songs, if you feel like it; or don’t say anything at all, “hug that thought inside your heart...”and just cry. It’s all okay. When all the words have been said and the thoughts have been thought, put the box in the ground, cover it up, and “bring on the flowers.” Then leave it alone because no Something Dead likes to be disturbed and besides, you’ll want to visit that burial spot now and then, to talk about the weather and things. And someday, maybe you’ll think about “Something Wonderful” again. Although the first few pages of this book may seem a little on the light side in both word and illustration, adults know that there are times when you have to smile through the tears when someone (or something) dies. But neither tone, story by author Stephanie V.W. Lucianovic, nor the images by George Ermos make light of a serious subject; in fact, the truth is that “The End of Something Wonderful” is a book that teaches kids to grieve.

Even so, there are things this book is not. It’s not something to grab without thinking: Lucianovic doesn’t include cats or dogs in her narrative, and kids without proper back yards may feel left out. It’s not something to blithely read aloud; it needs appropriate adult guidance. It’s not sentimental, either, but it shows ki ds that it’s okay to cry, and move on. For the child who needs that nudge, or for one that’ll soon be facing the inevitable, this is the book to have around. Parents of those kids know that “The End of Something Wonderful” is one you can’t miss.

Caring for Two Heart Health for You–and Your Baby Increase in blood volume. During pregnancy, By Joshua Stutzman, DO, FACOG OB/GYN, UPMC

W

hen you are pregnant, you probably notice the fatigue, shortness of breath, and lightheadedness that can sometimes overcome you. Did you know that these symptoms are caused by changes in your heart and blood vessels? To ensure your baby gets enough oxygen and nutrients, your heart and vessels undergo some changes that may require your heart to work harder and put stress on your body. These changes include:

your blood volume increases by 40 to 50%, to provide nutrients to your growing baby. – Rising heart rate. Your heart rate may increase by 15 beats per minute during pregnancy. – Drop in blood pressure. Hormonal changes and your growing baby can cause your blood pressure to drop. Your doctor will check your blood pressure regularly to make sure it stays within a safe range. – Increased stress on your heart. The increase in blood volume makes your heart work harder, increasing output by 30 to 50%. These changes have common symptoms, such as fatigue, however in rare occasions,

GYN and your cardiologist will work together to develop a treatment plan. A team approach is key to make sure that both mom and baby remain healthy throughout the pregnancy. Heart Problems That Can Develop During Pregnancy There are some rare, but life-threatening heart conditions that can develop during pregnancy. Once you are pregnant, the treatment involves keeping both mom and baby safe. Just like in cases of existing heart conditions, your team of care providers will collaborate to ensure that both mom and baby remain healthy throughout the pregnancy. It is important that everyone knows the different treatment options available, and makes an informed decision about treatment. Peripartum cardiomyopathy (PCM) – Although rare, PCM is heart failure that

develops at the end of the pregnancy or soon after delivery. It can be difficult to diagnose because many of its symptoms, such as shortness of breath and swelling in the legs and feet, is common in normal pregnancy. Hypertension or high blood pressure – Nearly 8% of pregnant women develop high blood pressure in pregnancy. This is called gestational hypertension and can progress to more serious conditions like preeclampsia and eclampsia. Heart murmur – Due to the increased blood volume, the heart may sound unusual during pregnancy. Murmurs often sound like a swishing noise and can be harmless, but should be monitored by your doctor. Arrhythmia – During pregnancy, your hormones or the stress on your heart may cause an abnormal heartbeat — too fast, too slow, or irregular rhythm. You may not need

treatment, but your doctor may run more tests to determine the cause or the source of the irregular heartbeats. Heart Disease After the Baby is Born The good news is after your baby is born, the stress on your heart will go away, and your heart may return to normal. Unfortunately, some conditions, such as preeclampsia or high blood pressure, can lead to heart and vascular problems later and put future pregnancies at risk. It is important to continue to follow-up with your doctors to monitor any symptoms and have open conversations with them about how you feel as some symptoms may be subtle, but serious. Dr. Joshua Stutzman is an OB-GYN at UPMC Williamsport. For more information on women’s services at UPMC in the Susquehanna region, visit UPMCSusquehanna.org.

Moms With Existing Heart Conditions If you are thinking about pregnancy or planning to become pregnant, it is important to talk to your doctor. Perch are often very cooperative when it comes to catching, but finding the cooperative fish can be a challenge at times. During the winter months, we ice-fishermen will usually probe the deeper water, but in spring and fall, you are probably better off fishing the shallower bays and shorelines. In early spring, when water temperatures hit around 40 degrees perch, move to the shallower water to spawn; they also hit the shallows again in the fall. The shallow water periods can be fairly brief, and you need to move to deeper water as the weather warms. Once located, fishing two to three-inch live minnows can be deadly. Several methods work; in the shallow water, a live minnow lip hooked on a one thirty-second ounce or slightly larger jig is a good choice. You can also attach the minnow several feet below a

small bobber-adjust the depth until you start hitting fish. I have also done well fishing a small plastic grub-usually yellow or white on a small lead head jig. If you are fishing deeper water, you may want to switch to a slip bobber to adjust for the deeper water or simply fish the plastic grub or live minnow with the appropriate size jig. By the way, the perch family includes the much larger walleye and sauger-also excellent table fare and fun to catch sometimes even in the same lake. The state’s top walleye was taken in the Allegheny Reservoir in Warren County in 1980; it weighed 17 lbs. 9 oz. The state’s top sauger was taken by Tim Waltz of Williamsport in the Susquehanna River, Lycoming County-it weighed four pounds. Sometimes the big ones are right here in our own backyard.

A few nice perch taken through the ice.

pretty impressive catch. Yellow perch are one of the easiest species to identify; their fairly long body is adorned with two dorsal fins (the fins on top of the back), one spiny ray, and the other is a soft ray fin. As the name implies, it is usually yellowish with dark bands running from back to near the belly with some orangey color showing up in the pelvic and pectoral fins. While it’s true that perch may not have the best reputation for their fierce fighting ability, they more than make up for it as table fare, as I already mentioned. Perch are often abundant to the point that they become somewhat stunted and do not reach even a good eating size, so in most cases, it doesn’t hurt the fishery to remove some for eating; eight or nine inches at the least makes for reasonable filleting.

my vice to others, including abuse and drinking. Of course, all vices are not to be excused. I know gambling almost destroyed baseball, and I have accepted the way Commissioners Giamatti, Vincent and Selig acted towards me.” That same year cycling star Lance Armstrong and seven-time Tour De France champion Lance Armstrong accused of doping came clean on the Oprah Winfrey show. “I made my decisions. They’re my mistake. I’m sitting here today to acknowledge that and to say I’m sorry for that.” Sometimes, like Alex Rodriquez, a player can mess-up, lie about it and go on to greater achievements. A-Rod, after many years of denying his use of PEd’s in 2001-2003, finally offered a public apology a decade later. “Back then, it was a different culture. I was very loose. I was stupid. I was naive. I wanted to prove to everyone that I was worth being one of the greatest players of all time. I did take a banned substance, and for that, I am very sorry and deeply regretful.” Similar to the fate suffered by the character ‘Smalls’ in the movie “The Sandlot,” the Houston Astros have given baseball a black eye. How soon, or whether they can recover, is yet to be known. For inspiration, perhaps they can look to ARod himself. Once a rising star, then a tainted player, he has risen to respectability, TV stardom, and a glamorous personal life with Jennifer Lopez. No apologies needed for that gig!

have made some kind of mistake on the court. Such self acknowledging doesn’t make the mistake go away and doesn’t soothe the coach who knows it was ‘their bad,’ but at least the athlete is fessing-up to his/her mistake. Whether or not there will be any future ‘apologies’ emanating from Houston that will be accepted in the court of public opinion remains to be seen. Still, the sporting world has listened to many ‘apologies’ over the years. Before the advent of public relations damage control machines, the 1919 Chicago ‘Black Sox’, that contrived to fix the World Series against the Cincinnati Reds, clearly missed the mark with their ‘apology.’ They responded to the public, stating, “We weren’t trying to offend anyone.” Mark McGwire, who hit a recordsetting steroid-aided 70 home runs with the St. Louis Cardinals in 1998, appeared before Congress telling them, “I am not here to talk about the past.” In a later interview with Bob Costas, he proclaimed he believed he would have hit as many home runs without the use of PEDs, stating, “The only reason I took steroids was for health purposes.” After years of denying he ever bet on baseball following his banishment from the game Pete Rose finally did come clean in 2013, stating, “If I’ve learned anything over the past 20 years since my banishment from baseball, it’s to own up to my failures right away. swung by to catch up with a few retired chums. It was totally random and unannounced. We sipped coffee, talked some hoops, and inquired about direct flights to Charlotte. It was a very interesting conversation. It always is. I love hearing from my older and wiser friends. I simply missed them. One who I admire asked if I heard the latest with regards to White Deer Golf Course. I played dumb, and he went off on a tangent. This gentleman begged me to write another article. I balked at first, but then he slipped me a 20. A very long story short. A quick

background. The Lycoming County Commissioners hired Billy Casper to do an in-depth assessment of White Deer Golf Course in the summer of 2015. The Lycoming County Recreation Authority — the longtime brains of the operation — was benched by the County in the spring of 2016. The Commissioners then regained absolute control of the entire complex. They handed the keys to Billy Casper and gave them $1,000,000 for capital improvements. Things got off to a very shaky start, and by the fall of 2017, the Commissioners announced that a contingency plan was already in place.

Rumors and speculations were everywhere. The County renewed and continued their agreement with Casper instead of pursuing other options in 2018. A turning point was coming soon. The Commissioners also made major headlines this summer when they Jamie mentioned they were Spencer planning to sell some of the land at WDGC to a developer. It was a big deal. Three hundred homes were coming soon. OK. There was much more that happened during this timeframe. These are the abbreviated

cliff notes. Back to the future, Marty. #seewhatididthere. I was somewhat puzzled by a few of the Commissioners’ comments at a recent meeting. Special thanks to my friend Anne and my retired pal, because this would’ve gone totally unnoticed. Several media outlets sometimes only print what you tell them. I wasn’t there, but I just watched this strange discussion on YouTube. To save some time, skip to 40:15. I am dead serious. It appears that the sale of the proposed property around White Deer Golf Course has come to a halt. You see, the land can only be used for recreational purposes. I do not know the exact details, and from what I understand, neither do our County

in 2019 came in at 46,582. Compared to 42,719 from 2018 and 51,384 in 2017. Overall revenues from 2019 were $1,482,145. They were $1,452,531 in 2018 and $1,570,185 in 2017. The membership figures are down, and that’s what concerns me. $242,325 for 2019, $275,266 in 2018 and $307,220 for 2017. They are declining. I hear several members are heading to Bucknell GC, a course that is also operated by Casper Golf. Kudos to Billy for watching their spending. Expenses have been down on every occasion. I would like to note that County did spend $437,000 on a shortterm loan in 2018 to give them a clean slate. Unfortunately, the taxpayers are still responsible for the hefty tab on the LCRA bond. WE spend $332,459 each year. There is no money left from the savings gained by refinancing these bonds. I noted earlier that $1,000,000 went towards new sand traps and sprinklers in 2016. Billy Casper spent $0 on capital improvements in 2019. These numbers are all from the online statements. White Deer Golf Course is a tremendous asset. She is a true gem that does a lot for many charitable organizations. I love the game of golf, but my neighbor across the street simply does not. Hopefully, the County Commissioners can find other ways to keep her around. I understand that we are trying to paint a picture, but the recent obstacles with not being able to sell the land and using fuzzy math can cause a major hiccup. Fairways and greens. Cheers.

Commissioners. I am curious. Did anyone read the large plaque outside of the Pro Shop? “We are invested in this land,” Tony Mussare claimed. “We had a plan for this golf course. We had a plan five years ago. That was supposed to be our growth corridor. It wasn’t memorialized. It wasn’t on the deed. We can’t even find the paperwork. These are the frustrating things with government.” Lycoming officials have been eyeing this area for quite some time. They have already brought in water and sewage to a good part of the region. Selling a large portion of the golf course was supposed to eliminate the debt and spur new economic progress. The Commissioners recently hired Larson Design to survey the land. The Comprehensive Developmental Plan for Southern Lycoming County now has a major hurdle. Did anyone check the filing cabinet next to the copier? “It’s another obstacle in the way,” Scott Metzger added. “But this isn’t dead in the water. It doesn’t mean we are going to stop. We’re going to get it done. It’s just another hoop we have to jump through.” In other mulligan matters, the Commissioners were very quick to point out that White Deer Golf Course actually made a small profit in 2019. Well done. This was the first year in the black in Casper’s four tenure. Now the Commissioners did say that the $40,000 gift from the Visitor’s Bureau and the Chamber definitely helped. Interesting. Looking at the numbers. WDGC rounds
