H

ow would you like to be President? Where do you start? What is most pressing? From Homeland Security to National and World defense. From healthcare to the debacle that has become Social Security? Let us not forget Mother Nature and climate change, global warming or just a violent weather pattern created by who knows what? To me it’s always a simple answer — our Nation must have the best-trained and prepared military. Our intelligence agencies and networking of Homeland Security at all levels must be top shelf and the best in the world. Without National and Global Security for all our interests worldwide, nothing else really matters. The protection and dedication to do whatever is necessary to keep freedom and our way of life from becoming a chapter in history. As I look at what is transpiring in Washington, I don’t know if Republicans or Democrats really understand the urgency necessary to protect our American dream. Let’s stop playing the blame game and continuation of Washington gridlock that only benefits those inside the beltway. It’s almost like both parties have conceded — we don’t have the answers so let’s play the game that keeps us all afloat — Conservative vs. Liberal, Republican vs. Democrat. Just act like you really care

about “We the People” and defend party beliefs. Gridlock is better than making tough decisions that may lose us this golden goose that is called working for the American people on their dime. So what is most pressing to our National security? In my mind right now it’s North Korea. Obviously, you have a leader in Kim Jong Un that wants to create a dynasty and legacy all his own. He has proven to have little value for life — even when it’s his own family. He cannot, and will not, be controlled by sanctions or diplomacy. He is hellbent on having transcontinental nuclear capabilities. But more frightening is that he seems to be on a mission to use them. He hates the United States of America and what we stand for. It’s comical to me that the media and national leaders criticize him for test firing missiles into active airspace. Do you really think he cares if he would take down a commercial airliner or whose airspace he was violating?! He is a loose cannon — simply put, the greatest threat to world peace at this time. Again, President Trump needs to stop tweeting, put down the cell phone and don’t get in a pissing contest with a skunk. Come to the realization you’re not going to threaten or bully Kim Jong Un to see it your way. So other than a preemptive strike on North Korea you have but one

important is President Xi Jinping. China is North Korea’s biggest trade partner. This provides the most chance of leverage against Kim Jong Un’s regime. Again, it’s hard to reason with someone who is unreasonable. China does condemn North Korea’s nuclear development, for obvious reasons, and needs stability in the region for their economy. I’ve got to believe if you get China on board with Russia and the United States the other nations would fall in place behind their allies. I will say Turkey is a stretch; President Trump will need to be on his A Game. Turkey does usually align with the U.S. and has ties with Egypt, who Russia and Vladimir Putin will have to win over. Imagine the future possibilities if an alliance could be forged in the name of preventing a rogue nation like North Korea from launching a nuclear attack? And no, I haven’t forgotten about ISIS. I also understand the constant threat Russia and China are to life as we know it. Remember — keep your friends close, your enemies closer. However, at this point of time in world history there may be an opportunity not only to address North Korea and ISIS but other world terror organizations if the major players can come together. The global economy is a great bargaining chip. The United States cannot continue to operate as the world’s policemen. It’s a much different world today and the stakes are at an all-time high. Besides, the pay is terrible! God Bless America.

option. You must build, and I hate to even use the words, a coalition of nations of power. China, Russia, Japan, India, France, United Kingdom, Germany, Egypt, and Turkey who is the most powerful Muslim country in the world. Jim The world economy of Webb, Jr. today is under enough stress — let alone if North Korea lobs a missile into neighboring South Korea. It would take complete diplomacy on the side of World Peace, and the big egos would have to be checked at the door. This is a great concern to me with how President Trump has approached relationships at home and abroad. However, I have no doubt he has the capabilities of getting the “deal done” like needs to occur. I know what many of you are thinking — no way! Never going to happen. Then what’s the alternative? Yes, we have issues with Russia that the media wants to make incendiary every day to attack President Trump. However, Vladimir Putin is a strong leader and he understands the world economy and what it means to his people and his legacy. I strongly believe President Trump and President Putin could work together for the good of each other. The other big player is China, they have several powerful leaders — most

Now, on to the main course. Because pork tends to be a sweeter protein, it pairs with peaches really well. So here is a simple recipe for pork chops and peaches. Peach-Dijon Pork Chops Ingredients 1/2 cup peach preserves, large pieces finely chopped 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard 2 tablespoons soy sauce 1/4 teaspoon dried marjoram leaves 4 (6-oz.) pork loin chops (3/4 inch thick) 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/8 teaspoon pepper

nyone who knows me, know that I love a good romance — and a good peach! As it happens, August is National Romance Month and National Peach Month, so combining both seems like a no brainer! If planning something romantic, or cooking (or both!) isn’t your forte, no worries — I’ve been nice enough to plan your evening for you! All you need to do is light some candles, cue up some romantic music (there are a bunch of pre-made playlists available on most streaming sites), cook up the recipes below and voila! Romance is in the air! You can thank me later! Naturally, each course has peaches so be sure to hit up a local farm or market so you have plenty on hand. So let’s get to it. Every great meal starts with a great drink so try this… Spiked Sweet Tea Ingredients • 1 (750 ml) bottle Riesling wine, chilled • 6.5 oz. Peach Liqueur • 6.5 oz. soda water • 15 oz. diced peaches • 40 oz. sweet tea Add the wine, peach liqueur, soda water, and peaches to a 2-1/2 quart pitcher. Add enough sweet tea to fill the pitcher. Stir to combine and serve over ice. Next up we need an appetizer or salad. This one covers both. Half salad, half fruit and cheese plate — it’s sure to please anyone! Grilled Stone Fruit Salad Ingredients • 2 firm ripe peaches, halved, pits removed

Directions: Heat grill. In a small saucepan, combine preserves, mustard, soy sauce and marjoram; mix well. Cook over low heat until preserves are melted, stirring frequently. When ready to grill, sprinkle both sides of pork chops with salt and pepper. Place chops on gas grill over medium heat or on charcoal grill 4 to 6 inches from medium coals. Cook 12 to 15 minutes or until pork is no longer pink in center, turning once and brushing with preserves mixture during last 2 minutes of cooking time. To serve, bring any remaining preserves mixture to a boil. Serve with pork chops. I suppose the only thing left now is dessert! But, I’m gonna throw you a curve ball on this one! No peaches for dessert! Why you ask? Well, because as it happens, August 10th is National S’mores day! So, head to the living room or backyard, light a romantic fire and cook up some s’mores for your sweetheart!

illiamsport has always had a rich musical heritage as witnessed by musical bodies such as the historic Repasz Band. A big part of that heritage, particularly in the past 60 or so years, has been that of the drum and bugles corps. Building on that heritage, the Williamsport High School Band Parents Association will be hosting a Drum Corps Associates Invitational competition this Saturday, August 12 at 6 p.m. at Williamsport High School STA Stadium. The show in Williamsport is a DCA show that will feature corps from the MidAtlantic region. Shortly after the end of World War II and throughout the 1950s, local veterans organizations, such as the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars, sponsored drum and bugle corps. These included such corps as the Black Eagles, and

the Kahler Komets — my father and uncle both played in the Komets for a time. Drum and bugle corps and the musical competitions that they played in became an important part of the area’s musical landscape, particularly during the summer months. One of the most noted of these was the “Cavalcade of Champions”, which was held at Bucknell University’s football stadium from the mid-1960s until about four or five years ago. This was a very popular event and officials of the Williamsport High School Band Parents, who are using the competition on August 12 as a fundraiser, are hopeful there is still a deep interest and passion for this type of event. “For this show, the Williamsport Band Parent Association had been looking for a new fundraising event that went beyond the usual sandwich sales to help with supporting the Marching Millionaires program,” John Shableski, chairman of the steering

to join the White Sabers organization, which is based in Dansville, NY. This year the White Sabers have been holding onto second place in scoring while “the Cabs” have been in fourth place. The show in Williamsport is basically a home coming event for all the Williamsport area musicians. Next year The DCA World Championships come to Williamsport! Over Labor Day weekend of 2018, Williamsport will become the site of the DCA World Championships as over 40 drum corps will descend upon the city for four days of music and competition at Williamsport’s newly renovated STA Stadium. “A lot of work went into bringing Drum Corps back to Williamsport thanks to the Williamsport Band Parents Association, The Lycoming County Travel and Tourism Board, Drum Corps Associates and the Williamsport Area School District,” Shableski concluded. Tickets for the competition are $15 and are available online at www. williamsport-drumcprop-show.com or at the Williamsport-Lycoming Visitors Center, Epic Percussion, and the “Williamsport Sun-Gazette”. committee for the event, told “Webb Weekly”. “Hosting the Drum Corps Invitational was a natural solution that not only strengthens the idea of Williamsport and Lycoming County as a musical community, but also has an impact on marching band programs in the area. When the drum corps come in to set up for the show, they choose local schools as rehearsal sites, providing clinics for the music programs and their students.” There is a pretty good Williamsport connection to this show, according to Shableski. There are several of the Williamsport Area High School instructors as well as students and former students who now compete in both Drum Corps Associates and Drum Corps International. DCA is the senior division of competition and the groups can include musicians as young as 13 and as old as mid-40s. DCI is a nationally touring competition program where musicians will ‘age out’ the year of their 21st birthday. This competition will feature a friendly rivalry between the White Sabers and Caballeros. This rivalry began late last year when over 30 of the Williamsport area musicians opted to leave the Hawthorne, NJ Caballeros

mid respondents’ comments about Office of Price Administration inconsistencies, Williamsport district O.P.A. office imposed penalties on four of seven motorists called to hearings Friday for alleged non-essential driving. Five of the cases involved the essentiality of driving to the Republican Womens’s picnic carnival at 423 Grampian Boulevard, July 28 and three of those five were penalized. They are: Mrs. Alice Schug, 796 Vallamont Drive — A book for three months, permitted to keep in book, driving to the event to bring food there. Harry Sherman, Montoursville. A book three months, driving out of the way to attend the picnic, after visiting doctor’s office. Ernest J. Gstalder, 1535 Louisa Street, a book, one month driving one block out of the way on a business trip to leave persons at the picnic.

A fourth driver denied gasoline rations was Walter Harris, 1933 Lacomic Street. Both of his “A” and “C” books were lifted for six months on charges of exceeding the speed limit in New Jersey, for using gasoline for a purpose other than which it was intended, not for purchasing a number of gallons of gasoline without surrendering coupons. When asked why he did not apply for more gasoline when his coupons ran out Mr. Harris replied that he did apply but had to wait eight weeks to get more and in the meantime bought more gasoline, in some instances promising to surrender the coupons when he received them. Two of the respondents indicated they may file appeals from their decisions. The hearings were conducted in the O.P.A. office. The three operators who were dismissed notified the examiners that their driving which appeared to O.P.A. investigators as non-essential was essential.

County Hall Corner Keeping Our Roads Safe By Larry W. Stout

A

t the July 27th County Commissioners Meeting, District Attorney Eric R. Linhardt requested the county to approve 95 “Special County Detectives” for a special assignment. Yes, that is not a misprint — 95 detectives. Before the rumor mill begins to spread the myth that Lycoming County is becoming a police state, it should be noted that all of these individuals are already in uniform and serving in the city, borough, and township police departments throughout the county. The District Attorney was asking the county commissioners to continue a program that allows countywide jurisdiction for DUI checkpoints and roving patrols for DUI offenders. Federal grant money is provided by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation to fund the initiative. Within PennDOT, the Center for Traffic Safety is tasked with establishing the Sobriety Checkpoint and Expanded DUI/Underage Drinking Enforcement Program. Lycoming County is one of four counties that are funded by the state for this program. For administrative purposes, it comes through Old Lycoming Township and then back to the county. Though this may seem a convoluted process, in the end, it helps keep Lycoming County safer. A Sobriety Checkpoint is a predetermined location at which law enforcement officers stop vehicles to check whether the driver is impaired. “I’ve been dreaming of aThey either stop every vehicle or

stop vehicles at some regular interval, such as every third or tenth vehicle. The purpose of checkpoints is to deter driving after drinking by increasing the perceived risk of arrest. The idea for sobriety checkpoints was first introduced in Scandinavia in the 1930s and became somewhat common in the United States by the early 1980s. They were controversial (being stopped arbitrarily and not for cause), but in 1990 the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in favor of the constitutionality of sobriety checkpoints. This has not stopped the debate about them, however, and Michigan, Minnesota, Iowa, Oregon, and other states have ruled that they violate their state constitutions. Though it might inconvenience the lawabiding driver, the results of the program are quite impressive nationwide. The Center for Disease Control did a systematic review of eleven high-quality studies and found that checkpoints reduced alcohol-related fatal injury, and property damage crashes each by about 20 percent. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s studies have shown that states with lower levels of enforcement

Law offenders, and drug dealing and many other offenses. He noted that on one roving patrol a few months ago, a special county detective was out at 3:00 a.m. and noticed a driver weaving on the highway. The detective found that the driver was both intoxicated on alcohol but also had a large quantity of marijuana and cocaine in the car. The man was charged with intent to deliver cocaine. It is always true — but especially in Lycoming County — remember, if you wish to get high on drugs or wasted on alcohol, then stay away from driving a vehicle. Drink and drive and the DA’s special county detectives will show you some new bars. Under the influence, under arrest. Drive hammered, get stammered. Make it a night to remember — not a night to forget. Don’t drink and drive, and you’ll stay alive.

and publicity did not demonstrate these same decreases relative to neighboring States. District Attorney Eric Linhardt made a good case for this program locally as well. He explained that the funding would provide for four checkpoints a year and 36 roving patrols. In the past five years that this program has been in place, there has been a ten percent decline in DUI offenders. But, as virtually everyone knows, there is a very big drug program in our area, so it is not surprising that in the past five years the number of drug related stops has doubled. The arrests from the checkpoints and roving patrols do not just catch DUI offenders. The district attorney noted that in the past, the program has produced arrests related to offenses such as illegal firearms, fugitives, stolen vehicles, underage drinking, Megan

Faith Conversations…

The Greatest Love of All

A

s we continue the conversation about God’s love for us, we must consider the way He chose to demonstrate that love to us. The depth of love can only be revealed as it is demonstrated. So how did God choose to demonstrate His love for us? In John 3:16 we read, “For God so love the world that He gave his one and only son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” He

demonstrated the greatest love of all by giving us His one and only son. Interestingly enough, Jesus described the greatest expression of love this way, “Greater love has no one than this: that he lay down his life for his friends.” John 15:13 Jesus didn’t have children, so it makes complete sense that the highest form of love He could offer was to lay down His own life for us. And that’s exactly what He did.

But every parent will verify that, once you have a child, the greatest depth of love you could demonstrate would be the willingness to lay down your child’s life for someone else. Frankly, that’s a demonstration of Tim love that I’m confident I Hartzell couldn’t offer. I have two sons. If you should ever need me to lay down my life for you, I pray that God would give me the grace to do it. However, if you need

me to make the decision to sacrifice one of my son’s lives for you, well, you’re going to be out of luck. Sorry. My son may choose to do it, or through the draft, my son may be chosen by the government to do it, but if the decision is left to me, it’s not going to happen. As a parent, I get it. There could be no greater expression of love than the willingness to sacrifice a child to save someone else. And because Jesus was God’s only and completely innocent son, His gift demonstrates to us the greatest love of all.

That’s how much God loves you. And my friend, God chose to demonstrate that love for you long before you were born. His love for you is complete and will never diminish. Even our wrong choices and prideful ways cannot diminish His love for us – not one bit. His love is unconditional and without end. Have you made mistakes? I sure have. Have you done things for which you are ashamed? Me too. Do you feel that your mistakes have disqualified you from

being the focus of God’s love? If so, then you are terribly wrong. God loves you. God loves you. God loves you! Nothing you have done could possibly diminish His love for you. My prayer for you today is that God’s love will break into your heart and your mind. He has been pouring out His love on you – can you see it? Are you picking up on it? Are you allowing yourself to feel it? Listen, do you think it is by chance that you decided to pick up this paper

life rises: God loves you! To demonstrate that love, God gave His only son – the greatest love of all. Next week, we’ll continue our discussion about the five essential truths about the good news of Jesus Christ by talking about God’s purpose for your life. 1. God loves you. 2. God designed you with a purpose. 3. Pride (sin) separates us from God’s love and purpose. 4. Through Jesus Christ, God extends forgiveness and reconciliation. 5. Through surrender (belief), we are reconciled to God’s love and purpose.

onversation is a great thing. Especially with children because their mouths are like an active volcano; you just never know what it’s going to spew at any given moment. Adults, on the other hand, like to change subject matter at will. Most likely when they feel uncomfortable with the topic at hand. Examples include — discussing new interior wall paint choices instead of their upcoming hip replacement. Or why their favorite pro quarterback is worth $15 million per season but our aging bridges aren’t worth giving a $5.00 countywide fee to fix them. How about confronting, via face to face (mouth to mouth) the latest illegal teen drinking party in the neighborhood? Nah. Talking about a trip to Aruba makes life more comfortable. Some brave souls can talk about anything, at any time, at anyplace. Nothing held back. They can be labeled a “loose cannon”. Doused heavily with opinion more than fact, they relish taking the roof down. Take it from a pro. Don’t flap your

lips freely by talking to a nun about pornography. Don’t bring up zero interest rates in the company of bankers. And never mention chocolate fudge lava cake recipes with people struggling to maintain a proper diet. It’s been said some people speak with a “forked tongue”. Gerry This means to say one thing Ayers and mean another or to be hypocritical in a duplicitous manner. Example — the minister is speaking with a forked tongue, promising support he will never deliver. People with forked tongues are more likely to lie than people with spooned tongues. I am afraid most politicians (99.9 percent) fall into this category. This is not to be confused with the term “speaking in tongues”. This is a weird phenomenon in which people speak, or appear to speak, in languages unknown to them. Thus, bring an interpreter with you! How dare you speak Spanish to me when I need directions in English! In life, we also encounter human beings who tend to “talk out of both sides of their mouth”. Sounds very hard to do,

doesn’t it? But it actually means to say contradictory things. It may be saying one thing to a certain person and the opposite thing to another person. Then you have people in our population (sirens in society) who tend to “double talk”. It’s when you use unnecessary verbiage added in to confuse the listener, such as using a double negative to make a statement mean the opposite of what it would otherwise mean. This is also known as “double speak”. In simple terms, it’s a way of speaking that confuses people. Another way of avoiding the truth. Doing that may make you the “talk of the town” — especially when you tell them the city is cutting back on bus budgets, running fewer routes, but would provide better service. That’s double talk! Back to the children. Many rush their words when they speak (ramble). They aren’t as articulate as they should be. “I don’t wanna,” should be, “I don’t want to”. “I dunno,” should be, “I don’t know”. They also like to use “ain’t” instead of “isn’t”. But they are forgiven, as I suppose it is better than adults using profanities or vulgarity. My nephew, or was it a neighbor, caught me swearing at a machine that wasn’t working properly. My defense? I graduated in journalism. Profanities are to the English language what spicy food

is to a menu. It livens things up at the risk of indigestion and repute. Being the smart kid he is, he understood. Not that he was at a “loss for words”. This means you are unable to speak or articulate a coherent thought. Example — “The driver was so distraught he wrecked his car that he was at a loss for words”. Metaphorically speaking is the same as figuratively speaking. It means to say something that is not really true but you can use it for expressing the intent of circumstance. As you have read, speaking is an art in itself. Why do some people keep you on the edge of your seat (good storytellers) and others put you to sleep (boring and monotone)? Let me leave you this week with one of my favorite terms regarding the use of words during a conversation. Pretend we are talking about something and suddenly you say, “You took the words right out of my mouth.” This means you said exactly what I meant to say before I had a chance to say it. Therefore we both agree on things. With me, that’s a rarity. By the way, the only other person capable of taking anything out of my mouth was my dentist. Talk is cheap. Dentist bills, however, aren’t.

Sunbury, and Danville. He was a druggist by profession. Without a family of his own, his delight to his lifetime was to help under privileged boys and girls. It was no surprise to his friends when they learned that he dedicated his estate to the entertainment of children. The money he left for this is administered by the First Community Foundation. Not many of the children will know anything about this man because Mr. Garrison died in 1942 at the age of 83 years. Why is this event always held on August 13, you might ask? That is because that is the date that the Spanish-American War ended in 1898.

The Most Valuable Thing Our Residents Bring Here is Their Family History.

Echinacea. Top Care’s Aloe Cool & Fresh lotion is available at most grocery stores and is an all-around sunburn salve for the whole family. When your burn starts to itch, there is nothing better than Gold Bond Medicated Powder in my experience. Gold Bond also has gels and lotions, but the powder provides instant relief. Of course, the powder can be messy, but I’m willing to clean up the mess for that swift, cooling factor. Another instant relief product is Fruit

of the Earth’s Aloe Vera mist. This moisturizing spray delivers a cooling spritz to your skin and is convenient for self-application. After you’ve treated the worst of your burn, keep the rest of your skincare on the gentle side. Avoid any harsh cleansers or exfoliates. This summer, I’ve started using Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser for face and body. It comes in a huge 16-ounce pump bottle and is fragrance-free, as well as noncomedogenic, which is ideal for

work best to conceal an inflamed face. Definitely skip the blush and bronzer and use blotting papers, as opposed to a compact or powder, to keep a tooshiny appearance at bay. Above all, aloe is your friend to treat sunburn, with itching powder and cooling spray on standby for instant relief. Some people will get that initial burn, which then fades into a tan and they may figure they are set for the summer. Even if you do have a burn or a great deep tan, keep using sunblock and wear a hat! Your skin is your body’s biggest organ, so protect it!

Cutters Help Raise Money for Local Charities The Williamsport Crosscutters recently helped raiser over $12,000 for local charities. On July 26th the team held it’s annual Dominican Plate Dinner to benefit A.C.E.S. North America, a charity based in Williamsport doing charity work in the Dominican Republic. The event raised $7,000 for the organization

to continue its mission. On July 30, the team held its annual Military Appreciation Night which included the Cutters players and coaches wearing special patriotic jerseys that were auctioned off to fans. Over $5,000 was raised in the auction which benefitted the local chapter of Blue Star Mothers who provide support to those serving in the military and support to families of those serving. Poison Prevention

D

o you have household cleaners in your home? What about prescription or over-the-counter medications? Each year in the United States, around 800,000 kids are rushed to emergency rooms due to accidental poisoning. Children are at a particular risk of poisoning because of their smaller size and immature organs. Pennsylvania Safe Kids Lycoming County Partner and the Lycoming County Health Improvement Coalition encourage you to do your part to ensure that your home doesn’t become a statistic. About 90% of child poisonings occur in the home and overall, accidental poisoning is the second leading cause of injury or death in the

United States, second only behind car crashes. Taking a few simple steps can reduce the risk of an accidental poisoning in your home. • Store household cleaning products out of children’s sight or reach, or use safety locks on cabinets within reach. • Store medications where children cannot see or reach them, never call them “candy”, and secure the child safety cap completely every time after you use a medication. • Read product labels to find out what can be hazardous to children. Items poisonous to kids can include make-up, personal care products, houseplants, and art supplies. • Put the toll free Poison Help Number in your cell phone and keep it by your home phone just in case. That number is 1-800-222-1222.

PYSHER ESTATE AUCTION

I

recall fondly my early growing-up years in northern Lycoming County. Hours upon untold hours were spent outside — fishing, hunting, hiking, exploring and watching the wonders of nature unfold time and time again. Great memories were formulated and it was a very healthy environment to spend those youthful years. No cell phone. No video games. No headset so you could listen to music and block out the wonderful sounds of nature. Heck, we even engaged in actual conversations with people rather than text them! They were simpler times, for sure, but really there is no real reason to not return to them now. Today, the world is a much more complicated place, with political divides tearing at us, increased use of recreational drugs destroying lives all across the country and folks just seem to be more opinionated and unwilling to be open-minded when discussing issues. We are constantly being bombarded by text messages and calls on our cell phones, posts on Facebook, and a continual flow of tweets and instant messages creating the perpetual interruptions that we have, unfortunately, accepted as “just the way life is” today. I say “No!” There is absolutely no reason to not turn off the cell phone, close the laptop, resist texting and just get outside for a hundred good reasons. Take a long hike (or even a short walk in the woods), hang a trail camera or tree stand, go fishing

along a remote mountain stream or take a youth for a walk and share with them the woodsmanship skills that you have taken for granted for all these years, thus helping them to understand and learn to enjoy the wonders of nature. Yes, we can return to these simpler times. As you do so, there are several things to keep in mind. With the advanced technology that has occurred over the years and increased awareness of health and nutrition concerns, there are a number of steps you can take to prepare yourself for a safer and more enjoyable day outdoors. Whether you are headed outside for a few hours or an all-day adventure, you shouldn’t leave the house without a backpack or fanny pack. The items you carry with you will be up to you, but here are a few suggestions: Tick tweezers — There has been a great barrage lately of the “latest and greatest method” to remove a tick from your skin once it has become attached. There is the use of Vaseline, a dab of gasoline on a Q-tip or covering the pest with peppermint oil. None of these are recommended by the CDC (Center for Disease Control). The one and only conclusive way that they suggest is to use fine-pointed tweezers. Clasp the body of the tick in the tweezers and pull out s-l-o-w-l-y. The tick will detach itself and can then be disposed of properly. Any of the other methods may cause the tick to expel some of its saliva, which may carry any of a number of diseases, such as Lyme disease. These tweezers should be available

SCENIC RIDGE FOODS

a needed boost if you are out and about for an extended amount of time. In recent years, staying hydrated has been the topic of many articles and conversations that should be heeded. Emergency notification — OK, here is where I say it is a good idea to have your cell phone, but I mean have it with you but you don’t need to turn it on! With the constant addition of new cell phone towers everywhere you look, you will probably be able to connect to a friend or 911, if need arises, from almost anywhere you are these days. Consider packing along a whistle as a backup means of signaling for help if you need to. These are some basics to consider, but don’t hesitate to add a few personal items or first aid products — just in case.

In our area, the two venomous snakes that you may encounter are the copperhead and the timber rattler. Both species would rather crawl away and be left alone, but if you encounter one unexpectedly or it feels threatened, you could have a problem. Snakebite kits should be available at your local sporting goods store or online. You would be wise to review the use of these kits via a YouTube video, and definitely discuss its use with your family doctor and follow their recommendations. We’ve all probably overhead cracked been guilty of this at least once in our with deafening volume, advertising lives. the storm’s arrival. The shroud of Thunderstorms develop most nocturnal darkness was interrupted as frequently on warm summer days as lightning lit up the inside of the tents the sun heats the air and pockets of like a night game at the ballpark. Rain pelted the sides of our tents Mike cumulonimbus clouds begin to and the wind pulled tirelessly at the O’Brien form in a vertical fashion. These have anvil-shaped heads and are one stakes. Even the most experienced and courageous outdoorsman would have felt of the first indicators that a thunderstorm is developing. An electrical imbalance intensifies apprehension. We knew better than to be near water or tall and lightning occurs between clouds, and trees but were surrounded by both. Camped from cloud to ground — the kind we should on an island in Minnesota’s Boundary Waters be concerned with. It is interesting to note that Canoe Area Wilderness, we had nowhere to lightning can also occur during snowstorms go and nowhere to hide. The storm finally and tornadoes. The first step in lightning safety is to strictly blew itself out and it was time to make a quick inspection of the campsite. Everything survived abide by the 30-30 rule. When you see the onslaught, everything that is, except our lightning, count the time (1,001, 1,002, 1,003, etc.) until you hear thunder. If that time is 30 nerves. Summer is the peak season for outdoor seconds or less, the thunderstorm is within six activities. It is also the peak season for miles. Lightning can strike from as far away as lightning, with an estimated 25 million cloud- twenty-five miles. So, if you can hear thunder, to-ground lightning strikes in the United States you are definitely within striking distance. Take shelter and stay there for at least 30 each year. With the recent storm activity in our area, I thought it appropriate to discuss one of minutes after the last lightning flash. Ideally, shelter should be a substantial building such as our deadliest weather phenomena. Lightning is a serious danger. The U.S. a cabin or house. Getting inside an automobile National Weather Service reports that over the offers good protection as long as it is not a past thirty years an average of 73 people die convertible. It is the outside metal surface of each year from lightning strikes, more than by a car that offers the protection, not the rubber hurricanes or tornadoes. Hundreds more suffer tires.

Save on Husqvarna at C.H. Waltz Sons During the month of August

If your hair stands on end, you hear clicking sounds, or your skin starts to tingle, lightning may be about to strike. If the unfortunate does happen, medical care is generally needed to save the victim’s life. Cardiac arrest, burns, and nerve damage are common effects of a lightning strike. The victim is not electrically charged and proper treatment might include CPR. Knowing that most regional storms of such magnitude generally last less than one hour, I always make a quick check of the time. It is psychologically important to be able to estimate how much longer you will have to endure the ordeal. When thunderstorms threaten, seek a safe location and remain there longer than you feel necessary. With a little common sense, you can enjoy many memorable fishing days on the water this summer.

Never stand near water or tall trees. When fishing, we find ourselves in, on, or near the water. We are also frequently in close proximity to tall trees, so it is important that we act with haste. If boat fishing, use common sense and get off the water before the lightning threat becomes significant. We have all stayed on the water too long. Now the storm is here and we have no time to retreat to appropriate shelter. With nothing left to do, we hightail it for cover, usually under large trees. Stay as far away from the trees as possible and make yourself a small target, even if this means getting on the ground. However, lightning can strike you as the electrical current moves in and along the ground. Get down on your hands and knees keeping your head tucked low. Do not lay flat, this gives lightning a better chance to strike you.

The crisis occurs the moment an individual enters a nursing home. Nursing home costs in Pennsylvania average $9,700 per month, which can devastate most family’s savings very quickly. Many people think that all hope of saving home and assets is lost if they or a loved one enters a nursing home and there has not been any pre-planning. This is a common misconception. Many times, this is the biggest, first hurdle to overcome. We at Greevy and Shoemaker understand the issues affecting eligibility for medical assistance benefits in a nursing home and the planning techniques that can be employed to obtain eligibility, protect the community spouse, if any, and preserve as many assets as possible for the community spouse and heirs when there is an unexpected and an unplanned admission to a nursing home. We will explain steps that can be taken to reach the best possible outcome for you and your family while providing peace of mind. YES, there are still things that can be done to protect assets and fix previous errors when someone enters a nursing home. When there is a community spouse, frequently all of the couple’s assets can be saved. Greevy and Shoemaker and their Certified Medicaid Planner™ are dedicated to working for you and your family to preserve your resources for a reasonable fee.

bodied crayfish imitation. I especially like the Rebel crayfish imitation. The sudden stop of the steady wobble on a retrieve usually indicates a strike and the fight is underway. This brief explanation of lures and baits by no means exhausts all the possibilities — in fact, there are many more that could be added. If space permitted I would add spinnerbaits, jig and pig combos, Texasrigged worms, lizards and creature baits, not to mention any number of surface lures. Yes, smallmouths can at times offer outstanding surface action. Oh yeah, and what about the possibilities with a fly rod? I’m out of space — well have to look into some of these other prospects at a later date.

rig can be fished at any depth with ease and different retrieves can be used to imitate escaping prey — even minnows. My next choice of lures would have to include the stickbaits or artificial minnow type lures and that would include both the hard plastic or wood and the soft plastic imitations. Some favorites of mine are the Rebels and Rapala’s as well as the Smithwick imitations. There are a number of other similar lures by other companies that no doubt work just as well. I like the floating types for smallmouths because I can let them lie motionless on the surface with an occasional wiggle or I can retrieve them using several different retrieves. Another lure, not actually a stickbait — but rather a crankbait — is the hard

double-wow. The first thing they saw was the playing surface and their response was, ‘this is awesome’. They looked around and saw that most everything was bright, shiny and new and looking good. Then, when they saw the dugouts, they were definitely wowed — even the guys who hadn’t seen it before.” On preparations for August 20: “Outside the stadium, we have extremely limited parking now. We just ask for fans’ patience and understanding with all the activity underway to get ready for the Major League game. There is a lot going on and it changes every day with more things being built, temporary roadways and lots of parking being taken away. This whole area will be full of things for that event. Unless you are involved in the planning it is hard to grasp what is going to be happening here.

It is akin to a traveling circus. It takes a lot longer to build than to tear down. It’s taking weeks to get ready and two days after the game it will all be gone. They are building two clubhouses for the teams, batting cages, putting in a temporary scoreboard in left field and temporary lights. “Once the Crosscutters play their game on August 13, the work inside the stadium will begin. That will include temporary broadcast booths, temporary walls in our current press box, making a press area out of Section 1 and putting up a video board. There is a lot going into this one, threehour game that will be telecast on ESPN on August 20. “Once that game is over we can’t sit back and relax because we have a home game August 22, but there will be a sigh of relief

from everybody involved. It is a great event and we are honored to be part of it, but it has been a slight disruption to our normal business operation. But, we will smile as we take that sigh of relief because we were part of something so great. “We take great pride in this. I can’t wait to see it on DVR when I get home that night. It is great for our ballpark. It is great for Williamsport and Lycoming County. It is a showcase. It is a one-day special event and more than just an extension of what goes on for ten days with the Little League World Series. I think the telecast will include background on our field and other things, so the telecast will be a different perspective than what happens with the Little League World Series. It is going to be fantastic for the area.”

we have ever had. The way it landed for the Phillies in this year, they drafted a lot more college players. In previous years it seemed they picked a lot of high school players who didn’t start out with us. So we have about 15 draft picks from this year’s draft, including the number one pick in Adam Haseley. We have a lot of top prospects on this year’s team that includes high picks from last year and international signings. The team is talented, and if they play up to expectations, we’ll be in the race right up to the end and hopefully get to the postseason.” On the team’s reaction to the stadium’s upgrades: “The reaction across the board was, ‘wow’. For those players here for the first time they really couldn’t appreciate the ‘wow’. For the guys that were here before it was

famous and photographed spots in all of Yellowstone. We took the 1/4-mile hike down to the edge of the falls where it plunges 500 feet for a few Instagrams. The experience at the lip of the falls was simply awesome and it was worth fighting the thousand or so tourists for a peek. Is Wegmans closed? What a fun vacation. The Spencers highly recommend a trip to Yellowstone if you haven’t already been. The familiar sights and sounds never disappoint. There are tons of abundant fishing opportunities so of course Michelle and I pulled over for a few casts. She even landed her very first Yellowstone Cutthroat trout. We are already making plans for a return here soon. Cheers.

of my time as a kid. This expansive meadow in the northeast section of the park is home to thousands of bison, elk, and pronghorn antelope. Some lucky tourists sometimes see wolves or a possible grizzly. We didn’t see any carnivores that afternoon, but had a few bison cross the road. I have a great video that has gone viral. No visit to Yellowstone is complete without swinging by Old Faithful or seeing Yellowstone’s Canyon. Old Faithful shoots 8k gallons of hot water some 150 feet into the air every 45 minutes. Now the Canyon may not be as big as the Grand Canyon in Arizona, but it is just as spectacular. The Lower Falls of the Canyon is one of the most

Webb Weekly Gem of the Week…

A Quick Look Back on Williamsport’s Summer Gem

F

or most people fortunate enough to grow up around or in the Williamsport area, the Little League World Series marks the beginning of the end of the summer. The games, the people, the events have all become a way to symbolize the final chapter of summer vacation. It means opening the world to Williamsport for two weeks to display the brightest parts of the city while preparing for the

changing of the seasons. Since 1947 the Series has been held in South Williamsport. It is the longest running nationally recognized Championship that has been held at the same place. It’s covered in tradition and has filled the final month of summer with something to anticipate and enjoy. Last year’s series ended a four-year winning streak by the International teams claiming the championship.

MURRAY

Maine Endwell, NY, representing the MidAtlantic Region, won the tournament with a 2-1 win over South Korea. The team from New York took the series by storm, Rhode Island, Brett defeating Crossley 7-2 in their opening game. New York then defeated Tennessee, 3-1, and Kentucky, 13-10, to reach the United States Championship game where it once again defeated Tennessee. The Championship game against South Korea was outstanding. Gone were big

innings and ten-run-rule games. New York, which was embraced by the entire area, celebrated well after the game for the hard-earned victory. It’s always nice when a U.S. team wins, but it’s especially nice when it’s a MidAtlantic representative. It was a great championship game, but there were plenty of big upsets in the tournament’s early goings. In two of the biggest defeats of the early portions, Japan was knocked off by the Caribbean and Canada. It was the earliest elimination by a Japan team since the start of the Little League World Series.

final games. The move to two brackets has been the model Little League has followed since the 1976 tournament. Despite being just United States teams to begin, the overall leader in Championships is Taiwan (17) followed by Japan (10). California comes in at third with seven titles. Pennsylvania is tied for fourth with Connecticut and New Jersey with four titles each. Taiwan’s numbers are even more impressive when you take into consideration it was done in just 30 years. Taiwan sat the Series out from 1997 to 2002 when it decided to no longer charter with Little League. It felt as if the rules were not something it could comply with enacted in 1992. Despite its differences with Little League, the accomplishment of winning 17 championships in 30 tries is amazing. Japan has dominated the series as of late, winning five titles since 2008. Japan’s success has been unmatched, despite being bounced from the tournament early last year thanks to Canada and the Caribbean. It will be interesting to see what happens this year at the Series. Regardless of the outcome, memories will be made for fans throughout the Williamsport area and beyond.

For the Caribbean, it was the beginning of an outstanding tournament that culminated with the win over Japan. Australia then defeated by the Caribbean, 2-1. The upsets, especially on the International side, highlighted an outstanding 2016 series. It wasn’t always as big and flashy. Its humble beginnings have helped it grow into the extravaganza it is today. The initial name of the Series was called the National Little League Tournament and was held in 1947 and featured only Little League teams from the United States. The first World Series was won by Williamsport, believe it or not, but the second championship team came from Lock Haven. The tournament officially split into two brackets in 1976, which guaranteed one International team and one team from the United States. The move came on the heels of a major controversy that saw Little League issue a ban on all non-United State teams. Under heavy criticism after the move in 1974, Little League pulled the ban and split the bracket to make sure a United States representative would be in the
