o clearly I am not Jimmy. He will be back next week, but I stole his space to give him some credit that he would never think he deserves. Jimmy does a lot for the community and the people in the community and it goes mostly unrecognized, and I think everyone deserves a thank you when you do something nice, so… Thank you, Jimmy, for everything you do and give to our area and the people in it. It does not go unnoticed or unappreciated. So…here’s the nitty-gritty of what we have going on this week. For the past couple of years, Jimmy has given each full-time employee a page of the paper to donate to the charity of their choice. We all get to pick something that is near and dear to us and donate ad space, editorial space or a combination of both. As you can see on the cover, we have a wide variety of organizations from across the area that we donated space to this week. I’m sure that you are familiar with most, and you can learn about what they do in more detail as you read through this issue, but here is a quick

rundown: The Central PA Food Bank – Committed to solving hunger in Central PA by 2025. Lycoming Animal Protection Society (LAPS) – Provides care and adoption services for many homeless cats and kittens at its no-kill shelter. Lycoming County SPCA – The region’s only full-service shelter accepting and adopting ALL types of domestic animals. We are your resource for reporting and investigating animal abuse. Lycoming County United Way – Engaging the community in philanthropic opportunities to improve the lives of its citizens through cooperation, collaboration and commitment; volunteer-driven, professionally managed and fiscally responsible. Multiple Sclerosis Society – Helping people affected by MS to live their best lives as they stop MS in its tracks, restore what has been lost and end MS forever. The Ronald McDonald House in Danville – Ronald McDonald House of Danville, Inc. shall provide

compassionate, temporary, convenient, subsidized housing and related programs for childhood cancer and other patients and families associated with treatment at area medical facilities. I won’t share which Steph Nordstrom employee goes with which organization, but know that these charities are near and dear to each of our hearts. We chose them because of personal connections and beliefs. We all hope that the bit of extra light that we are shining on these groups sparks additional help and donations so that they can continue to provide much-needed services in and around our communities. So thank you again, Jimmy. Doing things like this makes me so proud to be a Webb Weekly employee. I hope that as you read through the ads/ editorials about these charities, you will consider adding them to your 2018 donation lists if you are able. There are so many people out there who need a helping hand and so many amazing organizations that are doing everything they can to help.

Happy New Year! Happy New Year to you and yours! Do you have your resolutions ready to go? I really just have an overall goal to live a little healthier. Eat better, move more, stress less. Hopefully, I can manage the small changes needed to make this a reality. I also have a tiny goal of trying to have a houseplant. I am hoping to find something that I can keep alive and that my cat won’t feel the need to snack on. I’ve never had much luck with either, so if anyone wants to send me easy to care for plant suggestions and/or tips to keep my cat from eating them, they are more than welcome! However you plan to ring in the New Year, please be safe. Holidays like New Year’s have a way of bringing out the worst in people, so in addition to taking care of yourself, keep an eye on those around you. Not only for your safety but for theirs also. It’s easy to think that it isn’t your responsibility to ‘babysit’ others, but wouldn’t it be worth it if it saves their life or someone else’s? If you are heading out for the evening, please — please — make sure you don’t drink and drive. You can call a cab at 570-322-2222 or download the Uber or Lyft apps before you head out so you can get a safe ride home.

In Pennsylvania, one in nine residents, including one in six children, face food insecurity, according to Feeding America. The programs of the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank reach more than 400,000 individuals and include ElderShare, MilitaryShare (aimed at veterans in the community), Fresh Express, BackPack Programs, Kids Café, Summer Pantries and Summer Feeding. In 2017, the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank distributed more than 55 million pounds of food (of which nine million was produce) from its two healthy hub locations in Harrisburg and Williamsport. The Food Bank solicits, inventories and distributes food and other donated products to more than 900 partner agencies (food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters, etc.) that directly serve people struggling with hunger. In 2017, the Food Bank distributed over 55 million pounds of nutritional food. That is the equivalent to 46 million meals! To start your own virtual food drive fundraising team and help support those in need in your community, click on the food donations tab located in the header at www.centralpafoodbank. org or call 570-321-8023. The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank’s Healthy Hub is locally located at 3301 Wahoo Drive in Williamsport, PA 17701.

hat started as a one-day demonstration project on World Food Day in 1981 to address the needs of families struggling with hunger, has now turned into the largest non-profit food distribution organization in central Pennsylvania. The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank (under the umbrella of Feeding America and Feeding Pennsylvania) serves 27 counties from the border of Maryland to the border of New York. For more than 30 years there have many positive changes to the organization, including expansions to both healthy food hub locations in Harrisburg and Williamsport better serving the community. Now the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank is taking on a new initiative, taking food drives to the virtual world. During the holiday season, you may have seen a plethora of red barrels or donation boxes throughout the community, in places such as grocery stores, theaters, churches and schools, used to host food drives benefitting the

Food Bank. “Food Drives are a powerful connector for the communities we serve, not just at the holidays but throughout the year, bringing awareness to our mission of fighting hunger, improving lives, strengthening communities,” stated Joe Arthur, Executive Director of Central Pennsylvania Food Bank. “And now we have created virtual food drives for busy people to more easily help our cause. “ As more individuals turn to new ways of giving back with online tools like GoFundMe and Facebook fundraising, it was only a matter of time before the Food Bank jumped into the world of online giving, especially with the continued popularity of online campaigns and the social activity surrounding them. What is a virtual food drive? A Virtual Food Drive is a web-based tool allowing individuals and organizations to host a food drive online through the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank’s website. The online site has a fun approach of scanning food at a check-out station instead of going to the store, buying an item, and finding a drop off location.

With just a few clicks, anyone can purchase the most-needed items and make a difference in the lives of our neighbors in need. “Holding a virtual food drive provides an easy, immediate and impactful way for you or your group to get involved with ending hunger,” said Arthur. “It allows for 100% group involvement, is eco-friendly, cost efficient and you can make a difference from the comfort of your home, on your phone or at your desk.” Since the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank is able to generate six meals from a donation of just $1, an individual or organization that sets a goal of $1,000, will be able to provide 6,000 meals to their neighbors. Many organizations also commit to matching their employees’ donations, up to a specified level, as a community outreach initiative. In addition, a virtual food drive allows the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank to obtain and distribute healthy and nutritious food including fresh fruits and vegetables, dairy products and center of the plate proteins. One of the Food Bank’s main strategic imperatives is improving the health of the individuals in the 27 counties they serve by providing access to enough nutritious food for everyone struggling with hunger. The demand for food continues to rise.

ocial work is a profession that concerns itself with individuals, families, groups, and communities in an effort to enhance social functioning and overall well-being. That is a noble-sounding ideal, and it attracts idealistic young people with a strong moral purpose. Some years ago, a South Williamsport native by the name of Heather Wood was an education major at Bloomsburg University and came to realize that she did not want to be a teacher. She found a professor who was willing to talk to her about her career, and as a result of that conversation, Heather decided to change her major to Social Work. She was a little worried about how her parents would take it, but it turned out they were supportive. It is a good thing, because if ever someone was born to be a social worker — it is Heather Wood. Officially, her job is resource family caseworker for Lycoming County Child and Youth Services. Her responsibility is to recruit new foster parents (now formally known as “resource parents”), and then work them through the training and licensing process. The next step for Heather is the challenging task of matching up these resource parents with the children that come into the foster care system. Every facet of Heather’s job is challenging, starting with the recruitment process itself.

Finding families who are willing to take a youngster into their home and care for them, as one of their own, is not at all easy. There are those, of course, who would like a baby with a goal to adopt. But many more are needed, especially for homes for older children and for the housing of multiple children so that brothers and sisters are not unnecessarily separated. So Heather must talk to anyone and everyone about the joys of being a resource parent. She speaks at churches, community events, attends community fairs, informational fairs, and advertises in the newspaper, social media, and anywhere that she thinks people might be interested. She is an excellent salesperson, but what she is selling comes at a high price. It begins with an extensive application and clearance process that can take a month or more to complete, and also includes three evening training sessions. The two syllabuses for the training cover over 500 pages of material! Though this might seem overwhelming, it does tend to sort out those who are serious about the process and not just window-shopping. Once the resource parent or parents are officially approved, Heather makes a point to know these parents very well. This helps her with the second step, which is to match up these parents with the children that need to be placed. Children and Youth has a “snatch kids stigma”, but this is far from the truth.

The interest of the organization is to preserve the family with the intent of minimizing the trauma to the child or children as much as possible. This is why the county utilizes its own system so that when the children do need to be placed, it will be in homes in the county, unlike private agencies, which can ship the children anywhere in the state. Heather Wood’s greatest joy is being able to see a parent or parents that had a child removed to be restored and have the family back together. She notes that some resource parents not only act as good role models for the children but also serve as mentors for the struggling parents. This woman’s life is in her work. Her husband, Matt, also works at Children and Youth, and they are the parents of two children themselves. Heather Wood believes that every child deserves good, loving parents and a stable home environment. For those who share this conviction, give her a call at 570-326-7895 or visit the website: lycomingfostercare.org.

PA 2-1-1 System Making a Difference Lycoming County United Way Helping to Fund the Solution By Lou Hunsinger Jr.

f you have an emergency and need the services of a first responder you have an easy three-digit number — 911 — that will help you summon assistance quickly, but when people need assistance due to unfortunate circumstances or an emergency in which they need the help of a social service agency, there is a hotline that can connect them to the services they need. The PA 2-1-1 system is a free, confidential dialing code to help connect Pennsylvanians to health and human service needs. Through 2-1-1 people connect to a wide range of services from disaster relief to utility assistance, senior citizen programs, emergency food, job counseling, youth programs, and much more. It is the one-stop-shop for services available in communities across Pennsylvania.

Currently, the PA 2-1-1 system is funded by a combination of United Way support, grants and private contributions, and contracts. The Lycoming County United Way and the nonprofit, PA 2-1-1, are partners in supporting this community-strengthening service. “PA 2-1-1 can be a valuable resource to residents here in Lycoming County,” Ron Frick, Lycoming County United Way President, told Webb Weekly. “Having one coordinated approach makes sense, and now it’s available in all Pennsylvania counties. Our biggest challenge is making sure people know about the service and then encouraging them to dial to get the help they need.” Presently, there are seven regions throughout the Commonwealth providing the 2-1-1 service. Most of the regions, including ours in northeastern Pennsylvania, offer 24/7 phone coverage, as well as

These features provide easy access to services for varying needs and at times convenient for those looking for information. While 9-1-1 is reserved for emergency services, 2-1-1 is the call to make for health, human services, and disaster relief. The Federal Communications Commission designated 2-1-1 for nationwide use as an information and referral phone line in 2000. Since then, Pennsylvania has joined with the rest of the nation to provide this service to our communities, and have expanded 2-1-1 connectivity through text and chat availability. 2-1-1 is designed to serve three major objectives: 1. Connect people in need to health and human service assistance available through government programs and private nonprofit organizations in their communities; 2. Provide assistance to communities in time of disaster, allowing 9-1-1 to work primarily with first

responders; and 3. Connect volunteers and donors with organizations who can leverage these resources to meet the needs of the community. To learn more about the PA 2-11 system, please visit http://www. uwp.org/what-2-1-1. The Lycoming County United Way is a charitable non-profit organization that builds partnerships to solve community problems and raises funds for human service programs. They fight for the health, education, and financial stability of every person in every community. Working with program partners, they mobilize resources to improve the lives of people in Lycoming, Sullivan, and Tioga counties. This is done by assessing the needs of each community, raising funds, investing in programs, and measuring results.

A Double Dip on Broad Street

T

he white, bent, rusted pole that held the “Tall Fox Novelties” sign remains close to the curb on Broad Street in Montoursville. But the orange, blue and white Rexall thermometer in the alley by the old store is long gone. Let me bring you some warm memories on a cold day. Maybe you frequented one place or the other, but I got the pleasure to do both on one day many times over! My mother, Marie, did plenty of baking for us, especially cakes or pies on special occasions. Usually, there would be a “theme” to the cake, not just a chosen flavor. For example, if my birthday fell on the same day as the Indy 500 race in May, she’d search out small racecars and made a track on top. Using icing as “guard rails” she would need to “garnish” it with the important stuff. Off to Tall Fox Novelties we went. We walked the narrow sidewalk to the back of the store and opened up a wooden door that lead us up steps to the second floor. A massage parlor now resides there in that building. Still has the white paint, still the narrow sidewalk, but it shows how times have changed. Once inside Tall Fox, you’d see shelves full of boxes with things to decorate

with. Mother would tell me to look for the plastic cars and checkered flags to put on the birthday cake. Meanwhile, she was searching for things to put on wreaths (small birds?) or other items to decorate the house with during the holidays. It was fun as a young lad to be able to pick out what was going Gerry to be on your special cake. If I Ayers couldn’t find what I was looking for, the helpful clerks at Tall Fox would step up the search. But I really liked doing it myself, as they had so many bins to sort through. (I do the same thing these days at auto swap meets or antique stores). Mother always smiled within this place. I mean, we were buying nickel and dime plastic and tin stuff, no doubt made in Japan, but it might as well have been diamonds from Belgium. You needn’t ask why — it’s because she knew these various knick-knacks were going to find a place on a cake or delicious delicacy as decoration to make someone happy. Like the fluff on a parade float! Oh yes, Tall Fox also sold the colored candles for me to blow out! At that point in time, all 10 or 11 of them. I’m not sure where you find these bakery decorations and paraphernalia these

of aspirin (Lord knows she needed it for family bred headaches), a few cards as in “thank you” or “happy anniversary.” And maybe something on special like Easter candy or Halloween decorations. She also let me pick out a car magazine off the rack to read that Saturday afternoon. Another simple pleasure now usually replaced by an Internet screen. Sorry to say, I still like to HOLD my reading material, and secondly, I kept all those magazines my momma bought for me. Great reference material. Not just for road tests — but memories! As we left the store, I’d peek around the corner to look at the long, colorful thermometer they had mounted on the brick wall of the franchise. Mom would ask, “What’s the temperature?” And I’d say, “It’s wrong because its always in the shade. The sun never hits it!” In less than 15 minutes we would be back home. Another glorious Saturday growing up. No school, a new car mag to peruse, and a cake to decorate with miniature cars or elephants. The sky was the limit, and the kitchen smelled good. Yea, yea, I know Rosencran’s bakery was a stone’s throw from Rexall, right across the street. They had plenty of cakes to choose from. However, my mother liked donning the oven mitts the same way Mario Andretti slipped on Nomex racing gloves.

days. But trust me, it’s not at a massage parlor. Maybe the local dollar store. The cakes looked spectacular after a jaunt to Tall Fox. They also had plastic animals, flowers, butterflies, letters, and numbers in all sizes to customize your concoction. I remember one year my mother put zebras and giraffes on my brothers birthday cake. Our house was already a “zoo” at the time, so maybe she was just continuing a common theme. The day wasn’t done yet. From there we walked about one or two blocks west to the Rexall drug store/pharmacy. An Edward Jones investment firm building now resides there. Rexall had licensed their brand name to as many as 12,000 drug stores across the United States from 1920 to 1977. The “Rex” in their name came from the Rx abbreviation for medical prescriptions. The small one on Broad Street in Montoursville was typical of the time; a swiveling rack of paperback novels, a magazine rack with the latest periodicals, drugs for colds, congestion, diaper rash (A+D to the rescue), vitamins, lip balm, toothbrushes, gels, creams, and everything in between. On a Saturday afternoon in the early 1970s, it could easily become as busy as a department store because prescriptions had to be filled and delivered. It’s here where mom would get a bottle

ince 1981, the Ronald McDonald House of Danville has been providing a “Home-Away-from-Home” for thousands of families with children that are faced with critically ill children, many of who are hospitalized or receiving outpatient care for the treatment of cancer and other serious illnesses. Serving over 375,000 guests from 65 of 67 counties in Pennsylvania, 34 states and 27 countries, the Ronald McDonald House provides families with more than a place to eat, sleep, and shower. The House provides families with a support system that encourages families to interact with other families that are going through similar situations and to share their experiences. The Ronald McDonald House is open 24 hours a day 7 days a week and has 17 bedrooms, two efficiency apartments, an indoor playroom, living room, two TV rooms (one that serves as an extra bedroom when the other rooms are occupied), laundry room, kitchen, sun room, and an outdoor play area. The Ronald McDonald House can accommodate up to 59 guests at one time and on average 61% of that time the House is at maximum capacity. Many families who arrive at the Ronald McDonald House are not planning to be at the hospital with their child and are often transported in by ambulance or helicopter. These families arrive at the Ronald McDonald House with only the clothes on their backs. In these types of situations, the House is able to provide them with clothes, personal hygiene products, and other essential items to get them through their day. Thanks to the existence of the Ronald McDonald House of Danville, families do not need to sleep in their vehicle or hospital waiting rooms, nor do they incur the extra financial burden of hotel rates and restaurant meals. In most cases, the House removes the obstacle of distance and travel. Recently the Ronald McDonald House of Danville opened the Ronald McDonald Family Room, housed within Geisinger’s Janet Weis Children’s Hospital. The Family Room is a comforting haven within arm’s reach for families of critically ill children. The Family Room extends the support of our Ronald McDonald House into the hospital by offering a quiet, comfortable respite place for families to rest. The Family Room helps reduce stress and focus on their own health and well-being while their child is being cared for, just steps away. The Family Room offers a fully stocked kitchenette, living area, quiet room, nap room, two sleeping rooms, and full bathroom with shower facilities. The Ronald McDonald House of Danville hosts a summer camp program, otherwise known as Camp Dost. Celebrating 35 years, Camp Dost offers a magical place for children coping with cancer to recapture childhood fun and enjoy activities that may have been denied them by their disease. Camp Dost is a weeklong summer camp for children ages 5 to 18 years old. There is also a 24-hour camp for children ages 4 to 5 that have not completed one year of school. In support of the Camp Dost’s mission of making the camp experi-

volunteers the Ronald McDonald House would not be able to provide all the services and support for families. Our volunteers dedicate countless hours, energy, and passion to the Ronald McDonald House mission. Whether they are volunteering at the House, Family Room, or Camp Dost, each and every one of our volunteers has a special place in the heart of our mission. FAITH

article about faith? Thanks for asking! First, the Arctic Tern follows the sun. Wherever the sun goes, that’s where the bird goes. Sounds like good advice. In John 1:5-7 we read, “This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him, there is no darkness at all. If we claim to have fellowship with him yet walk in darkness, we lie and do not live by truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.” Like the Arctic Tern, keep following the Son and living in the light. Second, the Arctic Tern flies with the wind. When Jesus talked about the Holy Spirit, He illustrated it by talking about the wind. In John 3:5-8 Jesus said, “I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit. Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. You should not be surprised at my saying, ‘You must be born again.’ The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.” By riding the wind, the Arctic Tern accomplishes amazing things — by riding the wind of the Spirit, you

will do the same. Third, the migratory journey of the Arctic Tern is just plain awesome — and my friend, so are you. As you yield to your God-given instinct to worship, love and serve, you will accomplish amazing things during your time on earth. You’re crazy awesome too! Sadly, too many people resist the instinct provided by their holy design — and in the process, they sabotage the purposes for which God created them. But it doesn’t have to be that way! Our God is a God of redemption, and regardless of how much life you have lived, you can still yield to His sovereign design, and He will redeem your life — even the rough stuff! Listen to this Psalm of Kind David — a guy who knew a little something about messing up in life, “Praise the Lord, O my soul; all my inmost being praise his holy name. Praise the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits — who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit and crowns you with love and compassion, who satisfies your desires with good things so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.” I can’t think of a better time than the turn of a new year to yield your life to God’s sovereignty. Happy New Year!

he addition of 10 troopers — 9 recent graduates of the state police academy will augment the traffic patrols in the 9-county area of Troop F over the New Year’s weekend. The increase follows Commissioner Frank McKetta’s orders to crack down on all violations of the traffic laws this weekend, especially drinking drivers and speeders. Every trooper has been instructed to enforce the law to its fullest with no leniency for speeders or drunk drivers. “We will have more men on the highway this coming weekend due to the increase of 10 troopers,” said Lt. John Heffelstein, presently in charge of the Montoursville-based troop. “These men will be assigned to traffic duty and will augment the men stationed here.” Radar will be used on all three shifts, especially the midnight patrols. These have been increased and during the weekend eight men will patrol after midnight. All troopers have been alerted to the

drinking drivers since bars area allowed to be open this Sunday. Particular attention will be paid to vehicles operating faulty equipment. If any are found then operators will be prosecuted and the vehicles removed from the highway. City Police Chief Joseph Longo said about 30 men will be on duty for each shift during the holiday period. So far 32 persons have died in traffic accidents in the city and Lycoming County during 1967, a decrease of three from last year, when a record number of 35 fatalities occurred. City road deaths number five, matching last year’s figure and one less than 1965. This year’s total matches the 32 deaths traffic deaths recorded in 1958 as the third highest number on record. Thirty-three highway deaths were recorded in 1957. Lowest totals in the 11-year span were recorded in 1961 and 1962, each year listing 18 traffic deaths. Traffic deaths totaled 33 in 1957, 32 in 1958, 25 in 1959, 27 in 1960, 18 in 1961, 18 in 1962, 29 in 1963, 22 in 1964, 30 in 1965, and 35 in 1966.

Through Missionary Ventures we distributed bicycles, motorcycles, horses, boats, 3 horse & buggies, 2 snowmobiles, and 1 camel. Through Open Doors, 2.6 million Bibles, and via the Jesus Film Project over 119 million people have viewed the life of Christ in their own heart language. The results are phenomenal! fter several severe storms that depleted the federal insurance programs, a law known as the Biggert-Waters Flood Insurance Reform Act of 2012 was enacted. The idea was to require flood insurance premiums to actually reflect the real risk of flooding.

At the time of the enactment, the National Flood Insurance Program was $24 billion in debt and (forgive the pun) rising higher. The results were horrific, making many homes in flood zones unaffordable. The act was amended with the Homeowner Flood Insurance Affordability Act of 2014, but just as another “affordable” insurance law, it did not help homeowners much. So, now we have the Flood

There is a program out of these recent laws that may help some homeowners significantly. The Lycoming County Commissioners announced that they are doing a project to assist residents who are mapped floodplain and may qualify for a Letter of Map Amendment (LOMA) from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). COUNTY HALL

be removed from the Federal flood insurance requirement. It begins with an elevation certificate. This can be obtained from a state-licensed surveyor, architect, or engineer, and could cost anywhere from $500 to $2,000. If the elevation certificate shows that the ground around the house is above the base flood elevation, then a LOMA application can be processed. But since the cost of an elevation cer-

tificate can be above what many can afford, the county is funding a LOMA program through the Pennsylvania Housing Finance Administration’s Pennsylvania Housing Affordability (there’s that word again!) and Rehabilitation Enhancement Fund (PHARE) program. These PHARE grants are from the Act 13 Impact Fees from the gas industry. If the property owner qualifies, the Lycoming County Planning Department will process the

LOMA application for the residents. The county is being proactive in this endeavor, as the County Planning Department is already using the information found on the new flood maps to identify potential residents. In the summer, elevation certificates were completed in Susquehanna Township. In the past few months, they have looked into areas around the Little Muncy Creek in the eastern end of the County, and next year intend to look at the Jersey Shore floodplain. “Our depth grids help us see if

the home is potentially above the 100-year-flood level. It is not 100% accurate, but we can see where there is a high likelihood that residents may receive a LOMA,” said Fran McJunkin, Deputy Director in the Planning Department. “We are looking for areas that we did not change the flood boundaries. This works when we have a group of homeowners that we can do at one time,” McJunkin noted. If you wonder if you might qualify or want more information, please contact Fran McJunkin at fmcjunkin@ lyco.org. PA #121099

3 MONTH POWERTRAIN WARRANTY ON QUALIFYING VEHICLES

his is a story of two grandfathers doing what grandfathers often do — stepping up to the plate and hitting a home run… The story really begins with the return of Army Staff Sergeant Shawn Somits (John’s son and Scott’s son-in-law) from his final tour of duty in the Middle East. Shawn was always an enthusiastic hunter, and he was anxious to spend time passing on the tradition to his son, Wes. It was the spring gobbler youth day in April of 2014 that Shawn helped Wes, then 10 years of age, into the slightly oversized camo outfit and they headed out for the day of hunting. As fate would have it, Wes missed his shot at a long-bearded gobbler that morning, but it did not dampen his enthusiasm. They returned to the same location the following Saturday for the opening day of the regular season. Wes listened intently as Shawn made several calls that were answered by turkeys in the nearby woods. It was 9:30 when two mature gobblers came into sight, approaching the blind and the decoys cautiously. Shawn whispered instructions to Wes. As the birds came in range, Wes’ shot rang out, and a long beard sporting a 10” beard dropped in his tracks! As the father and son emerged from the blind, 3 other gobblers and several hens that they had not seen before quickly scattered — running into the nearby woods.

The two hunters admired the gobbler and celebrated Wes’ success — then they picked up the bird and returned to the blind. After waiting 15 minutes, Shawn wondered what response he might get and slowly began making a seductive call. A gobbler hammered back from over the hilltop and within minutes appeared on a trot back toward the decoys and the hunters. With one more single shot from Wes’ shotgun, Shawn dropped the second gobbler. The two proud hunters had achieved a “double” on that memorable morning! It was a wonderful example of how well the Pennsylvania Mentored Youth Program could work for a parent and their youth hunter. That same year, during the fall Special Antlerless Deer Only Firearms season for junior and senior license holders, Shawn, Wes and Wes’ grandfather, Scott, sat quietly in a ground blind in hopes that Wes might shoot his first deer. On the very first afternoon, Wes was able to take a shot, but it missed its mark and the season would close without the success they all had hoped for. The experience did, however, kindle Wes’ drive to hunt with his father or grandfathers whenever he could. Life can take some rather cruel and unexpected turns, and regretfully, Shawn Somits passed away on April 2, 2015. Knowing how much Wes had grown to love hunting and enjoy the memories he created with his dad the previous year while hunting turkeys and deer, the two grandfathers, or “Pop” as Wes

had nicknamed each of them, realized that it was up to them now to mentor Wes in the upcoming spring youth season. It was a task that they each readily accepted and began planning for together as to just how they could make it happen for Wes. Fortunately, the Mentored Youth Program allowed each of them to act as mentors for their grandson in the upcoming seasons. With the spring gobbler youth day just a few short weeks away, they had much preparation to do. After several pots of coffee and many hours of hashing things out, the two “Pops” were finally ready to let Wes in on the game plan for the big day. A smile began to spread across Wes’ face as the two seasoned veteran hunters laid out the details and Wes became satisfied that his hunting would continue and he would be able to share the adventure

Outdoors with Ken Hunter…

Ice Fishing 101

W

ith the hunting seasons winding down, it’s time to start concentrating on fishing again. A lot of people are probably saying fishing season is a long way off and fish don’t eat during those long, cold days when lakes are covered in a layer of ice, but nothing could be further from the truth. In my younger days, I too thought fish went into some kind of stupor and I couldn’t imagine one of those farm pond bluegills actually trying to eat something in the dead of winter. Almost all of the fish you catch in the

warmer summer months can also be taken in the cold winter months — albeit some are more apt to feed than others. Panfish, which include bluegills, pumpkinseeds, crappies, and perch all feed readily throughout the winter months. Like all fishing, the ability to be successful is largely dependent on using the right equipment in the right locations. Granted, the equipment used for ice fishing is quite different than what is used in your normal summertime pursuits. Basically, you can break down the equipment used to take fish through

the ice into two major categories — tip-ups or fish ‘snares’ if you will and jigging rods. Tip-ups are devices that generally signal with some sort of flag that a fish has taken your bait. While tip-ups come in a number of different forms, shapes, and sizes, they all have Ken a flag that pops up to Hunter signal a hit. You do not manipulate or “work” a tip-up; you simply set the trigger device and place the tip-up in a hole and wait for a fish to take the bait dangling beneath the tip-up. When the flag pops up, you go to

MURRAY

the tip-up, remove it from the hole and hand hook and play the fish. In my early days of ice fishing, the tip-up was the only type of equipment that my fishing buddies and I ever used. If rigged properly, that could be utilized for any species of fish; you simply geared line, hooks, and bait to the particular species you were targeting. Fishing regulations allow an angler five “unmanned” devices. In my early days of ice fishing, I would drill five holes, place my tip-ups and wait for something to happen. There were times that the fishing was so hot we couldn’t keep all of our tipups in the water; other times it could be incredible slow. While tip-ups can be very effective, it’s not the only way to put fish on the ice. Another

a bobber or strike indicator. Since tip-ups are stationary and not being manipulated by the fisherman, they are generally baited with live bait, but a jigging outfit can be fished with live bait, or it can also be very effective with an ice fishing jig of some kind tipped with some sort of bait like a wax worm or the like. It is not unusual for many of the “frozen chosen” to fish using both tip-ups and jigging outfits; for example — three tip-ups and a couple of jigging rods. Before you run out and invest in a lot of this stuff, I recommend you go ice fishing with some avid ice fisherman — most are more than happy to share their equipment, and that will help give you a better idea of what you might want yourself.

very popular, and also very effective, way to ice fish is with some sort of jigging rod. One advantage to the jigging rod is it keeps the fisherman much more active and involved in the process, and another big advantage is that it provides for much more mobility. Moving tip-ups around is more time consuming while sampling different locations and depths with a jigging rod is as simple as drilling a new hole and dropping the bait to the desired depth. Like tip-ups, jigging rods and reels also come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and lengths. Generally speaking, the rods are much shorter than conventional fishing outfits and the reels are often smaller. These outfits can be fished with or without

games have been a frequent occurrence for Penn State. Of their 48 bowl games, 24 have been played on New Year’s Day, most under the coaching of Joe Paterno. JoePa is the only coach in college football history to have competed in and won, all five major bowl games. His team’s record in major bowls is 13-4. While the clamor to crown an NCAA National Champion has given us the current four-team playoff format it has, in effect, deemed the other traditional ‘New Years’ bowl games as nothing more than exhibition games. At 10-2, the University of Washington presents a most worthy opponent for Penn State and gives the thousands of Pennsylvania fans who will make the trip westward some fun days in warmer weather. But if you are not Clemson, Oklahoma, Georgia or Alabama, all the other 38 collegiate ‘bowl games’ are merely side dish appetizers to what will take place in Pasadena, New Orleans, and Atlanta during January’s first week. If you are so fortunate to be relishing some extra time off from work, enjoy the bounty of sporting events presenting themselves at this very special time of the year. As you celebrate, please do so safely and appreciate those family traditions that have been passed down over the years. Hopefully, good luck will be your 2018 companion should you choose to pass on any sauerkraut consumption! Happy New Year!!!!

State’s December 30th appearance in Arizona’s Fiesta Bowl is sure to be the occasion of many a viewing party. The Fiesta Bowl is one of college football’s Big Five Bowls, (the Rose, Orange, Sugar, and Cotton are the others) but it is not where the Nittany Lions hoped to be at year’s end. Hold that 11-point lead against Ohio State for the game’s last five minutes, and a lot of the ‘what-ifs’ wouldn’t be a part of the discussion. But for the PSU players, the Arizona desert is not a bad place to play with the hoped-for College Football Championship Final Four now just a bad dream. This will mark Penn State’s 48th Bowl Game appearance. To date, they have compiled an impressive record of 2817-2. In those aforementioned major bowls, the Happy Valley eleven are 146-1. Along the way, they have found the Fiesta Bowl very much to their liking. In their six previous trips going undefeated at 6-0. for Memorial Park. Pickleball never discriminates and it’s very accessible. Regardless of sex, color or shape. Everyone is invited to join in the fun. Some say it’s the sport for all generations, but I have yet to find anyone under the age of 65 who plays on a regular basis. Joking kids. Several of my mates have tried it and most say it’s a blast. But none of them wanted to go on the record. “We’ve been playing Pickleball in my PE class for a couple of weeks now,” my only Yiddish friend tweeted discreetly. “I believe all of my students enjoy the game, but I don’t see them heading to Memorial to play recreationally anytime soon. Go Terrapins!” You don’t have to be a great athlete to excel at Pickleball. This intrigues me the most. I

Q: Do you have knee pain? A: Stem Cell Therapy Have You Been Told That You Need Knee Replacement Surgery? Have Traditional Injections Failed to Help Your Knee Pain?

“I was told that both of my knees were “bone on bone” and that I needed knee replacement surgeries. I had very bad pain in both knees in the morning when I woke up and while I slept at night. Climbing the stairs was very difficult. I received stem cell injections in both knees at Lycoming Physical Medicine. I felt a difference in 24 hours and within a month and a half, I was pain free! Maria I would highly recommend stem cell injections to those facing knee replacement surgery!”

on each side must let the ball bounce once before volleys are allowed. There is a seven-foot NO FLY VOLLEY ZONE on both sides of the net to prevent spiking. The server continues to serve, alternating service courts, until he or she faults. Pickleball can be played with singles or doubles. A fault occurs when the ball touches any part of the NO FLY VOLLEY ZONE on the serve. You can also score when your opponent fails to hit it over the net or jacks it out of bounds. Points are additionally awarded when a ball is volleyed from the forbidden NO FLY VOLLEY ZONE. Sounds simple enough. Happy New Year to all of my friends who swing by each week. See you in 2018. Perhaps it’s time to give her a try. The game is somewhat comparable to tennis and it’s traditionally played on a smaller court. The dimensions are similar to a backyard badminton setup, but the net is lowered and the ball is a wiffle. Participants use special paddles made of wood or an inexpensive aerospace alloy that can’t be found on any periodic table. That’s what the fine print on Amazon said. Free shipping. The ball is served diagonally, and only the side that serves can win points. The first side scoring eleven points and leading by at least two points is your champion. Players

Kohl’s store downtown but he had nothing to do with the creation of Pickleball! Don’t believe what you read. I personally don’t think we need a seven-member panel to examine its origins for the next nine months either. It was invented in the great Pacific Northwest by some Royal ugly dudes. I have confirmation. I also found no evidence supporting the fact that Pickleball will actually help clean up our neighborhoods. More fake news. This festive game has been around for a rather long time. In fact, Pickleball is one of the fastest growing sports. It’s huge down south and thousands are playing out west. Some think it will even be in the next Olympic games. It’s taking the nation by storm completely. Well, everywhere except

plays. In Loyalsock’s opening game of the season, a 43-41 loss to Mount Carmel, Webb only managed to pull down one reception. That reception ended up going 54 yards for a touchdown, sparking a Lancers comeback that would ultimately fall a little short. In Loyalsock’s opening round game of the District 4 playoffs, Loyalsock got behind quickly, but an 89-yard run from Webb helped the Lancers complete a memorable comeback over the Dragons. Webb ended that game with 118 rushing yards as the Lancers overcame a 21-point deficit to win 35-24. On defense, he was even better. Webb finished the season with 179 tackles to lead the Lancers. A recent article in the AARP Bulletin discussed the nursing home industry. Here are some points from that article: There are about 15,600 nursing homes that participate in Medicare and Medicaid programs in the United States providing long-term care for roughly 1.4 million elderly Americans. Medicaid is the primary payor for 62% of the residents. Some patients are getting Medicare in their first months at a facility. In Pennsylvania the private pay rate is approaching $10,000.00 per month. Sixty-eight percent (68%) of the nursing homes are owned by for-profit corporations, 24% owned by non-profit organizations and the remainder are government owned. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services “CMS” sets the regulations and guidelines for the nursing homes. CMS also provides an online rating of the 15,000 nursing homes that they certify, for more information see medicare.gov/ nursinghomecompare. Also to help you on selecting a nursing home AARP offers a check list that can be found by entering the term “AARP Nursing Home Checklist” in an online search engine. The decisions facing a family in finding a nursing home for care of a loved one are many and complex. The attorneys at Greevy & Shoemaker and their Certified Medicaid Planner can help you with these decisions and preserve your resources for a reasonable fee.
