From the Editor…

Brrrrr.

Y

’all. I don’t know what the weather is like when you are reading this, but as of this writing — It. Is. Cold. It is downright frigid with temps in the single digits and wind chills in the negative doubles. Obviously, going outside a lot is not in the cards, so it’s time to find something to do inside this weekend. First up will be putting all the Christmas stuff away and getting our house back in order. After that, I think frosty temps call for some warm comfort food. I found what looks to be a great recipe for Beef Bourguignon, which is a really fancy name for what is essentially beef served over rice or noodles. But it also screams comfort food and sounds like the perfect thing to warm you up on a cold day! Beef Bourguignon Ingredients: • 4 slices thick-cut bacon, chopped • 1 boneless beef chuck roast (about 2 1/2 lb), cut into 1-inch chunks • 5 tablespoons Gold Medal™ all-purpose flour • 1 teaspoon salt • ½ teaspoon black pepper • 1 lb carrots, peeled and sliced (2 1/2 cups) • 1 large yellow onion, chopped (2 cups) • 8 oz white button mushrooms, rinsed and halved • 2 cloves garlic, finely chopped • 1 tablespoon (from 6-oz can) Muir Glen™ organic tomato paste • 1 ½ cups red wine (the recipe calls for pinot noir, but I hate pinto noir so I will most likely substitute a malbec or red blend)

• 1 ½ cups Progresso™ beef flavored broth (from 32-oz carton) • 2 sprigs fresh thyme • 2 tablespoons butter, softened Directions: Heat 5-quart Dutch oven over medium heat. Add bacon; cook 8 to 10 minutes or until just crisp. Using slotted spoon, transfer to paper towel-lined plate; set aside. Reserve drippings in Dutch oven. Toss beef with 2 tablespoons of the flour; season with salt and pepper. Increase heat to mediumhigh. Working in two batches, brown beef cubes in drippings 2 to 3 minutes, turning to brown on all sides. Reserve on plate with bacon. Repeat with remaining beef cubes. Add carrots and onion to Dutch oven; cook 6 to 8 minutes, stirring occasionally, until onions are softened. Stir in mushrooms and garlic; cook about 1 minute or until garlic is fragrant. Add tomato paste; stir to coat vegetables. Add wine, broth, thyme sprigs, beef and bacon. Heat to simmering. Reduce heat to medium-low; cover and cook 55 to 60 minutes or until beef and carrots are tender. Remove thyme sprigs. In small bowl, mix remaining 3 tablespoons flour and softened butter; mash with fork to form a paste. Beat butter mixture into wine mixture in Dutch oven with whisk. Simmer about 3 minutes, beating continuously, until paste is completely dissolved and broth has thickened. Serve with mashed potatoes, buttered noodles or rice.

Now. I know I mentioned wanting to eat better this year, but I feel like a homecooked-comfort-meal like this needs dessert. Something chocolatey and filling to be exact, so I am going to go digging in the archives for an old recipe someone gave me for Guinness brownies. I’m Steph going to give you the recipe Nordstrom with the Guinness, but much like the pinot, I’m not a huge fan of Guinness, so I’m thinking I will try a different stout. Both Rogue and Young’s Brewing make good chocolate stouts, so it will most likely be one of those. Guinness Brownies: Dry Ingredient Mixture: • 1 cup all-purpose flour • 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder • 1/2 teaspoon salt Chocolate Mixture: • 6 tablespoons butter, cut into cubes • 8 ounces dark bittersweet chocolate, chopped (may substitute extra-dark chocolate chips) • 3/4 cup white chocolate chips Eggs and Sugar Mixture: • 4 large eggs, at room temperature • 1 cup granulated white sugar Final Additions: • 1 cup (8 ounces) Guinness Extra Stout beer (see Note below – room temperature, no foam) • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips Directions: Preheat the oven to 375 F. Line a 9 x 13-inch

baking pan with nonstick foil. Dry Ingredient Mixture: In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, and salt until evenly combined. Set aside. Chocolate Mixture: Melt butter, bittersweet chocolate, and white chocolate chips in a double-boiler over very low heat, stirring constantly until melted. Remove from heat. Mix the Eggs and Sugar: In a large mixing bowl, beat eggs and sugar on high speed until light and fluffy, about 3 minutes. Add melted chocolate mixture to the eggs and sugar mixture, beating until combined. Beat the reserved dry ingredient mixture into melted chocolate mixture. Whisk in the Guinness stout beer by hand. The batter may seem a bit thin. Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan. Drop semisweet chocolate chips evenly on top of batter (some will sink in). Bake 25 to 30 minutes (oven temperatures vary) on center rack in the oven, until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Let the brownies cool, uncovered, to room temperature. Note: The Guinness stout beer should be at room temperature. This recipe uses less than a standard 12-ounce bottle of Guinness stout beer. Pour the beer early so the foam can settle. Do not include the foam in the measurement. Either spoon off the foam or let it rest until the foam subsides. On a side note, Jimmy will be back soon. Hunter has been busy winning awards, playing basketball, and preparing to become a Husky in the fall and ‘Little’ Jimmy has been dragging Papa Jim out to the woods to enjoy some winter break hunting.

Uptown Music Collective Raises Money for Scholarships With Tribute to Southern Rock

O

n January 13, 2018, at 7:30 p.m., students, teachers, and alumni of the Uptown Music Collective, will take the stage of the Community Arts Center for one night only to pay tribute to the genre of music known as “southern rock” with their performance, Southbound. The performance will feature over 40 performers ripping through an exciting and highly entertaining set of some of the genre’s most beloved songs. All of the show’s income will go directly to support the school’s Scholarship Program, making it possible for all deserving students to have the opportunity to connect with the life-changing power of music. This performance is sponsored in part by Blaise Alexander Family Dealerships, UPMC Susquehanna, and River Valley Transit. The musical style known as “southern rock” came about through the blending of traditional southern blues, gospel, and soul music. Mixed with a heaping spoonful of country, boogie, and a few cups of gritty rock music. The prototype for the style was laid out in the sounds of 60’s rock bands like Creedence Clearwater Revival, The Band, and Canned Heat. However, the sound style truly came into being in the 1970’s through the sound and songs of bands like the Allman Brothers, Lynard Skynard, The Marshall Tucker Band, The Outlaws, and The Charlie Daniels Band. This driving, guitar-heavy music, became a radio staple in the classic rock era of the 1970s, with songs like Sweet Home Alabama, Can’t You See, Ramblin’ Man, and Free Bird, among many others that were vying for

airtime on the AOR Radio stations of the time period. “Southern rock songs were a big part of my early musical diet,” stated Dave Brumbaugh, Executive Director of the Uptown Music Collective. “The melodic guitar solos, big choruses, and relentless rhythm was exciting and inspired me to improve my guitar playing and to develop my ability to improvise so that I could produce solos as memorable and attention-grabbing. I was surprised however when my students picked this style as something they wanted to explore. I can tell you right now that they are extremely excited about this show, and when they finally take the stage to perform it, it’s definitely going to be something really special.” Another factor that makes this performance unique is the inclusion of Collective teachers and alumni on a few of the songs. “We are excited to have the opportunity to perform onstage with our students, it’s not something that we do often in public,” said Brumbaugh. “That combined with the return of a few of our alumni like Chris Kohler and Dylan Rockoff (both of Clyde Frog), as well as Brennan Hepler, Tess Clutter, Keely Krause, Levi Stover, Kendall Palmatier, will make this a really special night.” Southbound: A Tribute to Southern Rock will feature Collective students who have been diligently preparing for this event for over two months. Along with the live music, there will be a professional grade light and sound show organized by the students themselves. As with all Uptown Music Collective performances,

the students are not only the performers but also direct the show. There is also a group of younger students, called “Tech Monkeys” who will serve as stage technicians and spotlight operators. The cast for the show is drawn from the Uptown Music Collective’s much-heralded Special Performance Group 1. The students have set a goal to get 1000 people see this onenight event. This show is being produced by Collective Senior, Nate Schreffler (Sullivan County High School). It is directed by Uptown Music Collective seniors Gage Avery (Hughesville High School) & Justin Warrender (WAHS) along with a leadership committee that includes UMC students Chloe Taylor (Montoursville Area H.S.), Alexis Carnevale (WAHS), Cade Palmatier (Jersey Shore H.S.), David Chubirka (Montoursville Area H.S), David Montis (St, John Neumann), Enso Tran (WAHS), Isabella Cole (Loyalsock Township H.S.), Izzy Brumbaugh (WAHS), Emily LaCerra (Loyalsock Township H.S.), and Tate Berkey (Danville H.S.). “I am very excited going into this show because I love the music, and the guitar work in many of these songs is incredible,” said UMC Student Cade Palmatier, 15, Jersey Shore H.S. “I am excited to play with the alumni, many of which I knew when I was younger, and to play with the teachers, who have guided my skill and musicianship for many years.” Tickets for the performance are $15.00 in advance and $20.00 on performance nights. Advance tickets are available at the Community Arts Center (Box Office, Website, & App), Alabaster Coffee, K&S Music, Buttorff ’s Hardware, Catch-All Self Storage, Rupert’s Specialty Meats, Way Cool Beans, Hoyer’s Photo, CS Sports, and the Uptown Music Collective.

T

he year was 1893. Grover Cleveland was President of the United States, Robert E. Pattison was Governor of Pennsylvania and William G. Elliot was Mayor of Williamsport. The first college basketball game ever played was played on April 8 between Geneva College of Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania and the YMCA team from nearby New Brighton. The 1893 World World’s Fair, also known as the Columbian Exposition, took place in Chicago. The “Panic of 1893,” that triggered one of several economic depressions during the 19th century, also occurred. And here in Williamsport local YWCA was organized on January 17, 1893. The YWCA is on an active mission to save lives by meeting our community’s most pressing needs. This movement that began in London in the 1850s now spans across the globe to 120 countries and in 2018, marks its 125th anniversary of transforming Lycoming County. The groundwork was first laid for the YWCA during the industrial revolution when women were traveling to London for new jobs. Two women were concerned for the safety and well-being of these young women. One woman – Mary Jane Kinnaird – was a philanthropist who raised funds to set up housing for traveling young, single women. Emma Robarts set up prayer circles to pray for their well-being. They teamed

up and created the first Young Women’s Christian Association in 1855. The YWCA movement spread to the United States and in 1860, New York City and Boston YWCA’s opened, providing residences, typing classes and exercise equipment. By 1875 there were 28 YWCAs in America. Focus areas of the YWCA at that time included the effects of industrialization on women and how to manage personal finances. It was January 17, 1893 when Emma Carter, the wife of the Rev. James Carter of Williamsport’s Second Presbyterian Church, invited her sister – a member of the Harlem YWCA - to speak to a group of concerned citizens, “interested in the welfare of the girls of our city.” Within two weeks the Women’s Friendly Society of Williamsport was founded with Emma Carter as the first president. By December, the group became a YWCA and ever since that time, the volunteers, directors and staff of Williamsport’s YWCA have provided flexible, responsive and lifesaving services. “We are incredibly honored to carry on the YWCA’s rich tradition of serving the women and children of our community,” said Dawn Linn, YWCA CEO, told “Webb Weekly”. “This year we honor all the accomplishments of our past, prepare for the future and work tirelessly to embrace our community and live the

ACTIVATE GOALS

YWCA’s facility was packed with junior and high school students jitterbugging and having good, clean fun. In 1977, Wise Options opened its 24/7-crisis shelter and emergency hotline, providing free and confidential services for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. With about 1,000 women, men and children served each year – the YWCA Wise Options program has made a tremendous impact in Lycoming County. In January 2002, a young woman and her daughter showed up at the YWCA. They were homeless, the mother said, but not suffering from domestic violence. At that time, most of the YWCA rooms were rented out to college students or single women – so there was nowhere for them to go. For the next year, tireless work was done between the YWCA, other local service providers, the United Way, and dozens of volunteers. In January 2003, Liberty House became a reality with five rooms available and sheltered eight women and children in the beginning. As women moved out of the residence rooms at the YWCA, Liberty House took over more and more space and today can shelter nearly 40 women and children. As these two cornerstone programs make up the majority of the work done by the YWCA Northcentral PA in 2018, the YWCA is excited to reenergize the community to the work done within their four walls with a year-long celebration of 125 years of service to Lycoming County. Throughout the year the YWCA will be hosting a wide variety of events to celebrate

YWCA mission of promoting peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all.” Changing lives of the women in our area has always been the motivation of our YWCA.” One of the earliest local initiatives of the YWCA was the Extension Committee, which 1910 began working with women in local factories – giving them support, rest areas and worked with factory foremen to provide safe locations for women to take work breaks. The next decade led the local YWCA to open the area’s first daycare for working mothers, cafeteria, and Girl Scout Troop. For nearly 30 years, the YWCA bounced around Williamsport – outgrowing facility after facility. So in May of 1926, in one week, a building campaign for a new YWCA dominated the news and the social scene. In seven days, under the leadership of Annie Whitehead, $450,000 was pledged to build today’s YWCA at 815 West Fourth Street. Today’s stunning red brick building opened its doors in 1928 and for the next 90 years has housed many of the community’s and physical resources to help women live their lives to the fullest. Classes for women ranged from typing and foreign languages to reading stock reports and investing wisely. Physical classes included gymnastics, synchronized swimming and basketball leagues. In the schools, the YWCA was known for its strong presence through Hi-Tri and Hi-Y clubs. On any given Friday night, the

its anniversary. To kick off the event, a history mystery themed birthday party PM Exchange will be on Thursday, Jan. 18 at the YWCA, 815 W. For the community to better understand the history of the local organization, Mary Sieminski and Janet Hurlbert will be presenting The Voices of the YWCA at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 11 at the YWCA. Their in-depth understanding of women’s history in Lycoming County will paint the picture of the influential females who lead a movement in the community through the non-profit.

he YWCA of Northcentral Pennsylvania is in the forefront in assisting with the social problem of homelessness, to that end the “YW” will be involved in an effort to identify the needs and provide for the needs of this population. According to officials at the YWCA, the homelessness service providers of Lycoming County are seeking items to distribute to individuals on the night of January 24 during the annual point-intime (PIT) during which volunteers canvass the entire county to get a real-time picture of homelessness in our area. Items such as basic hygiene supplies, socks, hats, gloves, scarves, flashlights, matches, blankets, snacks, handwarmers and more are needed so those who are living in homelessness can have an increased sense of safety, warmth and dignity. All items donated will be distributed in rugged, durable uniquely-designed CITYPAK backpacks, designed to uniquely meet the constantly changing needs of the homeless. Packs are made of ballistic nylon, include straps for a bedroll, an integrated poncho to keep both the individual and their possessions dry

and anti-theft webbing loops so the pack can be hooked onto an arm or leg when needed. This street-level survey is required by the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), the largest funding source for services and programs for homeless individuals. The information gathered through this process influences the services HUD provides and is used in creating regional planning efforts to work toward the goal of ending homelessness. To help with this survey, or are interested in lending a hand in anyway, contact Tara Day-Ulrich at the YWCA at (570) 322-4637, ext. 117, or email tday@ywcawilliamsport.org. The PIT count is facilitated by the Lycoming County Housing Alliance, which includes representatives from the YWCA, Journey House, Family Promise, American Rescue Workers, Salvation Army, Central PA Food Bank, West Branch Drug and Alcohol Abuse Commission, Lycoming County Pre-Release Center, Transitional Living Center, Nurse Family Partnership and the United Way. The Housing Alliance facilitated a count in the Fall 2014 and sixty-six individuals, including 19 accompanied children under the age of 18.

The Jaded Eye…

As the World Turns “A man’s face is his autobiography. A woman’s face is her work of fiction.” ~ Oscar Wilde

T

rust me; if I knew this was something hiding in the water, or even the air, I’d give my male counterparts a fair warning. But lately, I have run into more guys with broken hearts than ever before. What gives? It’s affecting their work, bank accounts, and most importantly their spirit and mental health. Broken hearts cause

stress. Stress leads to anxiety. Anxiety ultimately ends in excess baggage like a ball and chain. In a perfect world, relationships between people would be like a bag of your favorite candy. Sweet, comforting, and no regrets if no diabetes. Comedy movies, soap operas, and sitcoms make love look easy. Note to the naive: they are actors who studied scripts. Guess what? Some of you are messing with make believe characters also. Misrepresentation at its finest. A few recent “case studies” include the

following. All names changed to protect the guilty. “Tyler” is a mid 30s male who has four children to two different women. He juggles child support and work, but still has a quest for a new conquest. The others are “old tires,” and Gerry he wants “fresh tread.” I Ayers brazenly inquired if he was aware of condoms in his teens. Blank stare. It’s hard to tell him that finding love in his position at this stage in the game is difficult. He still mopes. He fires off texts

like missiles on a desert range seeking love and attention. “Women don’t understand what I’m about,” he says. Sometimes you have to grasp yourself before you can grasp anyone else. Then there is “Derrick.” Fresh out of college and a ripe age 23 or 24. Cleanshaven, good looking, steady job, nice car, and apartment. Treats women like a Goddess and the world is his stage for the taking. He confides he is depressed because he can’t keep a relationship for an extended length of time. Does he feel uneasy because his peers all have steady (unyielding?) girlfriends? It bothers him, actually gnaws at him, that he may be alone on a Friday or

Q: Do you have knee pain? A: Stem Cell Therapy Have You Been Told That You Need Knee Replacement Surgery? Have Traditional Injections Failed to Help Your Knee Pain?

“I was told that both of my knees were “bone on bone” and that I needed knee replacement surgeries. I had very bad pain in both knees in the morning when I woke up and while I slept at night. Climbing the stairs was very difficult. I received stem cell injections in both knees at Lycoming Physical Medicine. I felt a difference in 24 hours and within a month and a half, I was pain free! Maria I would highly recommend stem cell injections to those facing knee replacement surgery!”

health issues if not dealt with. Charles Bukowski proclaimed, “Don’t wait for the good woman. She doesn’t exist.” Spoken like a true realist (or ultimate pessimist). William Shakespeare took things a step further, “Women speak two languages — one of which is verbal.” I listen intently to women when they talk. It’s not always a cut and dry thing. Hidden agendas are lurking. Thus, Mr. Bill was correct, body language speaks spades. Words are one thing, body talk is another. And, texts don’t count in this game. Mind games that is. Years ago I penned a column and ranted how many women fall for “bad men” because of low self-

esteem. It’s a two-way street; men fall for “bad women” because they get lonely and bored. Like the song says, “If you can’t love the one you want, love the one you’re with.” Men can go to great lengths to impress a woman to “love” them. Gifts, dinners, movies, concerts, etc. Ah yes. Aristotle Onassis piped, “If women didn’t exist, all the money in the world would have no meaning.” Thus, guys’ bank accounts are heading south as they look north for love. Many times, it’s cold going up there. So why do these forlorn men come to me to vent frustration over the opposite sex? The sponge who absorbs their lost bouts of love. Their free fall from grace. I

mean they can go to an advice column or call a toll free number. They know I hate drama and still lay it on me. Some grown men have told me the only woman that ever said to them “I love you,” was their mother. That made them sad, feeling no one else took interest or felt them worthy. Look, guys, a great mate and love like a glove are nice, but not worth losing sleep over. Life goes on. Wait (or not) for true love, not false hope. I can’t speak for other guys because I am not “one of the guys.” That being said, counting sheep (and cars) is often a much simpler proposition than brooding over looming or lost love.

Saturday night. I told him to enjoy the precious time to yourself and don’t force the issue. Be happy you have great health and vigor. And, remember what Francois Truffaut once said, “In love, women are professionals. Men are amateurs.” Some men came crying to me that their wives are leaving them after decades of marriage. In other words, “heartbreak on hold.” Sometimes there is no rhyme or reason. It just is. I suppose you can fall out of love just as easy as diving into it. More heartache — lost time you will never get back. Are men’s hearts more fragile than a woman’s? It’s now been proven that serious heartbreak CAN cause prolonged

THREE ESSENTIAL DOCUMENTS TO RING IN THE NEW YEAR Every new year we make resolutions and promise we’ll get things in order. This is also a good time to make sure your documents meet your needs. Your Will is the basic estate planning document in which you name an executor who will settle your estate and in which you set forth how your estate will be distributed. Your Will may contain one or more trusts for the benefit of spouse, children, grandchildren or others. A bypass clause is especially important to protect against your estate passing to an institutionalized spouse. Most Wills do not have a bypass clause and that can be a grievous and expensive omission. Your Power-of-Attorney names someone to do your business for you if you are unable to do so. A well-drafted durable POA is imperative if you become a resident of a nursing home. Your Living Will states your preference as to whether or not you want extraordinary life-prolonging measures. With these three essential documents professionally prepared by attorneys experienced and knowledgeable in the issues facing older generations you can feel reasonably assured that you have in place the tools you will need to face the new year. We will review your essential documents for free to determine if they meet your needs. From all of us at Greevy & Shoemaker, best wishes for a Healthy and Happy New Year!

arge audiences, starting with the initial matinee performances and continuing through the afternoon and evening, filled the Majestic Theater yesterday to see Gertrude Ederle in the special aquatic act which is being featured during the first three days of the week, The act provides an ideal opportunity to see the English Channel swimming Trudy in her natural element. Trudy’s personal appearance on the stage is preceded by excerpts from newsreels showing her actual conquest of the turbulent channel, which has baulked so many efforts to swim it and has been conquered by so few. The American girl’s reception at Dover and her subsequent reception when she returned to New York City are likewise depicted. Trudy, herself; makes her personal appearance instructive by demonstrating in the large glass tank, various strokes

which played an important part in her channel swim. She also shows the propelling power of her arms and legs and gives some indication of her stout lungpower by turning several submarine somersaults in succession without coming to the surface for air. She appears in the same outfit (minus the heavy grease coating) which she wore in her famous swim and concludes her appearance with a brief expression of her appearance for the manner in which the public has greeted her channel victory and also for her personal appearances. Supporting Miss Ederle in the tank exhibition are the Misses Marion and Ethel Baker, who open the act with fancy dives and similarly entertain the audience during Trudy’s costume change. The act is well staged and undoubtedly one of the most effective and pleasing aquatic features ever presented here. Miss Ederle and her company will appear again today and tomorrow also.

Better yet, wear a shower cap to keep your hair dry. You can still spruce up your locks with spray products, like leave-in conditioner and dry shampoo. This will keep your hair healthy and save you some time in the morning. True, it may seem like an uphill battle to get your family in line with skincare this winter, but, if you make it part of your daily routine, everyone will reap the benefits of feeling much more comfortable. Just keep reminding them that hydrated skin will keep them warm, while dry skin will make them itchy.

For yourself, this winter, swap lipsticks for a tinted balm, double down on nighttime care with a heavier night cream and hydrating serum and don’t neglect your feet and hands. A thick foot cream and fuzzy socks are a great over-night treatment for calloused feet. And, follow your own reminder and use hand cream after washing your hands, doing the dishes, etc. Lastly, don’t forget your hair. Like skin, hair can also dry out during the winter. Dryer hair is more likely to attract static, which no one likes. Opt for moisturizing shampoos and don’t forget

es, it is a new year, and we are all thinking about the future, but for the moment, take a trip back in time with me. Imagine that I am meeting myself twenty years ago. 20th Century Larry (20C Larry) meets me (21C Larry), and we start talking about communications. “Oh, look at this,” 20C Larry says as he shows me his pocket pager. “I can get a message now no matter where I am in the city. If someone wants to reach me, they call a number to a service and leave me a message and then the server sends it to me and my little device beeps, and I read it. Pretty amazing isn’t it? Do you still have these in 2018?” “Ah,” 21C Larry responds slowly, “you might want to sit down when I show you what we have in 2018.” I pull out my cell phone. “From this, I can get messages just like you described, but I can also get the calls themselves, from anywhere in the world, in fact. And this little thing also takes photos or movies with sound. I can even watch Hollywood movies from it, listen to music, get directions, play games, use the internet.” “Whoa, whoa, whoa,” 20C Larry interrupts, “you’re kidding me, right? That little thing fits into your pocket. It could not possibly do all things. And if it did, it must cost a million dollars.” I try to break this to my younger self gently, “No, actually, it does a lot, lot more than I just described, and yet these are so afford-

able, almost everyone in 2018 has one. And they are so simple to use; even grade school kids have them.” I have used this little make-believe dialogue in leadership seminars to illustrate how difficult strategy and planning really is because the future almost always surprises us. This struggle came into play at a recent County Commissioner’s Meeting as Karl Demi, the Information Services Director was explaining VoIP (Voice over Internet Providers) vs. regular phone lines. The county has been making this conversion over the past year, beginning with the Court House and the Executive Plaza offices, and this year intends to extend it to the Prison and the Lysock View facility. Commissioner Rick Mirabito, ever the fiscal steward, asked Mr. Demi if just because the technology was available, was it necessary? He saw the practicality for large facilities such as the buildings already completed, but could the outlying ones just get by with what they had?

esting to them. Dante, age 10, felt that the library helped him learn better. Dashirah, age 17, liked the library because it gave her a place where she could think by myself. But it is not just for kids. Josh, age 26, noted that the accessible technology in the library gave him access to job opportunities. Andrea, age 34, commented that the library is to her a “peaceful respite and source of new beginnings.” So, yes, the future is coming, and like the libraries in Lycoming County, they are learning to reinvent themselves to meet the needs of a changing world. As we become more aware and prepare, we should not in the process miss the blessings of the now. As the saying goes, “Yesterday’s the past, tomorrow’s the future, but today is a gift. That’s why it’s called the present.”

Mr. Demi speaks slowly and softly, but he packs a lot of logic and power in his words. As delicately as he could, Mr. Demi explained to the commissioners that VoIP was not the future, but the present and the land lines were the past. And yet, as technology advances, it does not dictate. Take the case of libraries, for example. For years now, there has been talk that with digital books becoming more and more popular, libraries were becoming obsolete. However, a recent survey at the James V. Brown Library revealed the opposite response. Shirley, age 65, liked the fact that the librarians helped her pick out books that her grandchildren would like to read. Eunsong, age 40, brings her children to the library because the programs are so inter-

r. Martin Luther King Jr. lived a life dedicated to service to others and calling attention to and helping to fight injustice. This is the theme of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Dream Week and Day of Service that will take place January 15 to 18. The event begins on Monday, January 15, the day that would have been Dr. King’s 89th birthday, with an MLK Peace Walk, Rally and Day of Service. The event will be held at Pennsylvania College of Technology in the Bardo Gymnasium. Doors open at 8:30 a.m. for registration for service projects. Volunteers will be sent to several community service providers in Lycoming and Clinton counties. Most of the service provider agencies are in Williamsport. Locations for Service Projects include the West End Christian Community Center, the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, Firetree Place, Saving Grace Shelter, the American Rescue Workers Thrift Stores in Williamsport and Jersey Shore, the Salvation Army in Lock Haven, the Salvation Army locations on Dewey Ave. and on Lycoming Mall Drive, New Love Center Food Pantry, Transitional Living Center, the River Valley YMCA in Williamsport, Family Promise of Lycoming County, Sojourner Truth Ministries, and the Center City Food Pantry. There will be a short PeaceWalk through the nearby neighborhood at 9 a.m. The walkers

will return to Bardo Gym for warm refreshments and to listen to guest speakers. Afterwards, the volunteers will be sent to their service projects (approximately 10:30 a.m.-1 p.m.). Events continue on Tuesday, January 16, at 7 p.m. at Lycoming College Clarke Chapel 700 College Place, Williamsport, with Lift Every Voice and Sing – A Celebration of Dr, King’s life. (2018 will mark 50 years since his death.) Various members of the community will sing and read poetry, in honor of Dr. King’s life. On Wednesday, January 17, 2018, at 5 p.m. at Christ Community Worship Center, 436 West Fourth Street, Williamsport, will be Unity Through Understanding. Doors open at 5 p.m., light dinner will be available. At 5:30 p.m. members of the community will engage in conversation in a Round Table discussion about Unity through Understanding. Harlem Wizards to Return to the Magic Dome Tickets Go On Sale January 8th

T

he Harlem Wizards will once again return to the Magic Dome at Williamsport Area High School — for one last time — in a fundraiser benefit game for the Williamsport Area School District Education Foundation (WASDEF). The game begins at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 12. Doors open at 5:30. From crazy slam-dunks to three-man alleyoops, the New Jersey-based organization promises a night of spontaneous humor and excitement in “basketball wizardry on the hardwood.” The Education Foundation is in the midst of coordinating all aspects of the event and is

finalizing its “Millionaire Magicians” team, comprised of teachers, principals, staff and students from across the district who will go up against the Wizards in a performance game. “We’re excited to bring back an event that’s proven to be family-friendly for the community and one that ultimately benefits our students through the Foundation’s annual fund,” said WASDEF Executive Director Greg Hayes. The district’s Title 1 program once again will hold its annual family night in conjunction with the game. For the last three years, the department has sponsored a book giveaway and provided information on how to support reading at home.

As for the game itself, the Wizards are sending a new team to the Magic Dome, and a special basketball mini-showdown between fourth- and fifth-grade students is planned. “Along with a brand-new team, we’re expecting to have several new team members from the district playing as well, so audiences are promised that they won’t be seeing the same show,” Hayes said. “We want to keep it fresh each year and give the audience something new to look forward to. This year, during the third period, we’re having a team of fourth- and fifth-graders from Curtin and Lycoming Valley play against each other to get them on the court and have some fun.” This year will mark the fifth and final time — at least for now — for the event that made its Magic Dome debut in 2014. Since then, it’s helped generate more than $44,000 for WASDEF. “Each year, the event has surpassed our

expectations, and each year, it’s been hugely successful, thanks to all the families who came out to see the show,” Hayes said. “Last year, we had nearly 2,000 people attend who helped us raise over $11,000. It’s been a great run, the community’s loved it, but we feel it’s time to take a bit of a hiatus from this particular event and try our hand at something new.” Tickets go on sale Monday, Jan. 8, and are $7 for students and $10 for general admission in advance; at the gate, tickets will sell for $8 for students and $11 for general admission. Tickets will be available at the following locations: Community Arts Center Box Office, 220 West Fourth St.; Robert M. Sides Family Music Center, 201 Mulberry St..; and the Genetti Hotel, 200 West Fourth St., an event sponsor. Tickets also will be available for purchase online at www.wasd.org/foundation.

tions in the future. Being afforded chances like this is enlightening and something that more companies should participate in when it comes to high school students. I think a misconception among businesses is that students wouldn’t be interested in career-oriented opportunities. However, DMI has shown me that even active high schoolers, in a multitude of sports and other activities, who are interested in getting involved with companies still can. Internships extend the knowledge of students so they can gain work experience in a meaningful way that helps them make better decisions moving forward.” Evelyn Griffith, Class of 2020: “My in-

he future of the economy is in STEM,” said James Brown, the executive director of the STEM Education Coalition in Washington, D.C. Employment in occupations related to STEM — science, technology, engineering, and mathematics — is projected to grow to more than 9 million between 2012 and 2022, according to data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). Yet, the shortage of U.S. citizens working in STEM occupations is expected to reach over 1.2 million by 2024. Discovery Machine Inc. (DMI) has made it a corporate initiative to provide students with internships that familiarize them with what a career in a STEM field might look like. As part of DMI’s STEM initiative, the company hosted two student interns from Loyalsock Twp. High School to provide them with real-world experiences. DMI, a small business in downtown Williamsport, specializes in artificial intelligence for clients including the US Navy, US Air Force, and US Marine Corps. Building upon military success,

DMI now provides commercial training needs for healthcare, energy, and business markets as well. Yahya Khan, Class of 2020: “Interning as a high schooler is an important and valuable experience for anyone interested in college. Having the opportunity to gain exposure to a career field is imperative to decide whether it’s something that’s for you or not. During the summer of 2017, I was able to intern at DMI as a software engineer. During my internship, I gained firsthand experience for how a company is operated and how engineers work together to create products. “While interning, I learned about software development and implementing skills with different aspects of programming. I was able to write my own code to make a 3D model for an immersive simulation. The process made me realize the infinite possibilities for creating different scenarios with DMI software. At DMI it is essential to be able to make different kinds of simulations, considering what their customers expect. Navy training simulations are much different than hospital training simulations, for instance. “I also worked on testing simulations for errors, making primitive models, and creating artificial intelligence behaviors that make their own decision based on

the environment. My favorite work included making simulations that trained people in the healthcare industry. I valued this work as it gave me an initial exposure to see how hospitals function in such a cohesive and near flawless manner. “Being an intern at DMI has also opened up exciting opportunities for me. Because of my internship, I was able to speak at the Lycoming Chamber of Commerce stressing the importance of internship programs in all fields. Having this opportunity was very rewarding. Speaking about my internship in such a formal setting to a group of business leaders was not only humbling but something that I can talk about when it comes to college applica-

ternship still had its challenges. When interning at a computer software company, you are expected to be able to learn on your own and use the equipment that you are given, but I was never taught some of the basic things that I needed to know. It was a challenge for me to learn to use the software that was given to me, but eventually, I figured it out, and I am now able to be more productive by myself and focus on my work. “When I was in the internship, there were a few things that I was hoping to take away. Of course, I wanted things like references for future applications and colleges. However, I also took away some valuable life skills. I learned how to work with people who are more experienced than me, take constructive criticism, manage my time, and most importantly how to ask for help. These are important things that I think many high schoolers don’t understand. And the fact that I was given the opportunity to learn these things (as well as a little bit of programming) puts me ahead of the game, and will without a doubt improve my chances to be successful in the future.” As DMI continues its STEM initiative, they would like to urge the local community to do so as well. Increasing high school internship experiences will help make our graduating seniors the most competitive in the country.

ternship was a great experience. It offered me a new outlook on scientific careers everywhere and has offered lots of insight as to what a programming career may be like. My background started with my parents having a career in computer software programming. That gave me a lot of unique opportunities to expand my knowledge and learn before I even started my internship. However, when I started my internship, I was still a beginner. I went in knowing close to nothing in comparison to the people that I worked with, but throughout the summer, my skill level improved. “Throughout this internship, I found things that I liked and things that I didn’t like. A few things that I found to be interesting were Blender, RESITE, and Audio Recording. Blender allowed me to create new simulations to put into the “games” that DMI created. RESITE allowed me to actually create the games, and Audio Recording allowed me to place my voice in the simulation so that the character’s communication would have sound. “At the beginning of the internship, I expected that it would be very hard and intimidating. Both were true. It was hard for me, as a teenager, to work with adults and people that had much more experience than me. I also expected that it would be fun and interesting. This was a very true prediction. However, the in-

The Roving Sportsman… Thoughts for the New Year By Jon Pries

T

he ball has dropped. The New Year’s Eve parties are behind us. Hopefully, our heads have cleared up by now from the revelries of New Year’s Eve, and we can take time to focus on what lies ahead in the coming year. So, steep a pot of tea, or brew a jug of coffee, and let’s sit down and contemplate what the future may bring our way. Goal setting is important. I have often found that the best way to accomplish a goal is to think it through, write down your

plan, which includes a realistic timetable, and then review that plan from time to time to verify that progress is being made. Make a list of your goals, which should include a few short-term items as well as longer, more involved things that you must stretch to reach. Being able to cross off the shortterm items once you have accomplished them will give you the encouragement to continue working on the long-term or more involved goals. Time is one of our most precious assets. It is the one thing that “once it is gone, it is gone forever.” You can’t get it back. Thus,

in setting your goals, you must define what goals you are setting are truly worth trading valuable time for in order to achieve them. Include in your list of goals a realistic time at which you can reach each goal, and define the pay-back value of each goal — meaning, how your life will be made better by achieving each of the goals you finally decide upon. What are the obstacles you expect to encounter along the way? Once your list of goals is complete, lay out your plans to achieve each of the items. Are you being realistic? Are you biting off more than you can chew? If you are satisfied that all of the goals are doable, it is time to write down your plans on the calendar and start NOW. Start a daily diary. If you have one already,

then, over the next month or so of chilling temperatures and falling snow, you can while away the time by reviewing what you saw, thought or accomplished in the past year. By keeping these records, you can more easily recall when turkeys began showing up in your hunting area in the spring when you were able to begin spring planting of food plots, when various hatches occurred on your favorite trout streams or when you observed several nice bucks running together before the archery season. All of these things help you better lay out your game plans for the upcoming seasons. Promote your sport. Whether you are a biker, a hiker, a hunter or fisherman, it is important to the continuation of your chosen sports to do your part in making

they have also been known to pick off a wandering cat, and they have even attacked dogs. That being said, however, it appears that chickens top the menu when it comes to domestic victims. Nine hundred and thirteen chickens were reported killed between 2005-2015 with sheep coming in second with 414 killed. Cats ranked third at 283. I suspect that if you added feral cats into the mix that number would probably be higher. Only 31 dogs were reported killed in that same 10-year period. Human attacks are very rare. Coyotes can be hunted year round, day or night, so I guess there is still some hope that I can catch up to my wife. Who knows, by that time she may have doubled her own score.

Warnecke. Even with his energy centered on the Warriors’ on-court successes, Mussina is a much-talked-about candidate in baseballrelated media circles as the January 24 announcement of the 2018 Baseball Hall of Fame inductees draws closer. Although Mussina’s selection on this year’s ballot is a longshot, his candidacy has propelled upward since first becoming eligible in 2014. That year he received 20% of the vote, but that total increased to 51.8% in 2017, placing his ninth among the many vote-getters. Baseball Hall of Fame rules requires a candidate receives 75% of the votes cast for induction. Players remain on the HOF ballot for ten years following their eligibility unless they receive fewer than 5% of the ballots cast in any given year. During his outstanding career, Mussina compiled a record of 270-153 and won more games than 34 of the starting pitchers already enshrined in Cooperstown. Hopefully, Mussina’s call to the hall will be a case of ‘when — not if.’ Even though Alabama and Georgia have decided the SEC championship and that of all of college football as well, Penn State and its Big Ten brethren can claim some bragging rights with their outstanding 7-1 Bowl record. Only Michigan failed to hoist the conference’s banner with their loss to South Carolina. Could be that not too many folks around these parts are sorry over Coach Harbaugh’s headaches. Shaquan Barclay is gone, but thanks for the memories. It was a great ride!

work with Yankees hitters. Meulens had signed with the Yankees in 1985 and spent parts of five seasons with New York from 1989-1993. He is currently with the San Francisco Giants (the team that signed O’Malley to his first professional contract) as their bench coach and has been with the team during their recent stretch of three World Series championships. Even though he did not get the Yankees job, prospects are good that the multi-lingual Meulens will get a Big League opportunity down the road. If he does, O’Malley could find himself with a Major League coaching position. The Christmas break brought with it some disappointment for Tom’s niece Lauren O’Malley, Montoursville’s standout hoopster. The senior court star sustained a broken bone in her hand during a Warrior practice session putting a major damper on what was sure to be another all-star season. At the time of the injury, O’Malley was averaging 15 points a game and was well within striking distance of the 1,000-point career milestone, needing just 130 points to reach the coveted achievement. While O’Malley’s injury was a blow to the Lady Warriors, Mike Mussina’s boys’ squad capped off 2017 with an impressive 4-1 record, including early season wins over three of last year’s local District champions, Hughesville, St. John Neumann and Lewisburg. Despite losing four starters from last year’s team, the Warriors are getting solid contributions and court leadership from seniors John McCarthy, Owen Kiess and Luke

wasn’t meant to be. Everyone was catching fish including this little girl who was really starting to rub it in. Todd was on fire. He was using the very same setup some five feet away. We’d switch holes, and then he’d slay them in my old spot. Jason even gave me his electronics, but he was over there proving to the world that he doesn’t need anything with a serial port. I mean. Look he just caught another. It’s gotta be me. My gloves were completely frozen, and I couldn’t feel my toes. It was starting to get dark, and I thought to myself how much longer? A few more minutes passed and just when I was going to give in — my electronic went absolutely berserk. I didn’t panic nor did I call for help. I only tried to remember what was discussed in Ice Fishing 101. I slightly bounced my rod hoping to entice that monster red flash that was embedded in the weeds. He came up for a quick peek, and I slowed my presentation. I felt a slight twitch and set the hook realizing I had a fish on the other end of my line. Hey guys. I finally got one! Aaliyah laughed. So I have caught hundreds and hundreds of fish in my lifetime, but that puny four-inch baby bluegill was my first through the ice. Size didn’t matter, and I ended up catching three more. Nothing to brag about but I was awfully proud. I am still a novice, and I am hooked. Special thanks to my mates who taught me a few new tricks to help with my obsession. Ice fishing isn’t for everyone, but I had a blast. I wish Jason and Todd continued success as my friends are heading to a tournament in Michigan soon. Appreciate the patience and advice. Frozen lines boys. Cheers.

fishing combos. One enormous cargo sled and several propane heaters. Portable blinds to state of the art electronics. It was amazing. “Todd has been slaying ‘em,” Jason relayed. “So why don’t you set up next to him. Here, use this. That color combo is banging right now. Are you familiar with one of these?” Jason was pointing to a Lowrance Elite V Depth Finder that was in a blue weatherproof case. Um. No. I had absolutely zero experience with such a high tech sonar pinging electronic device, so I played dumb. “Well. Here’s your depth,” Jason continued. “We are fishing in 6 feet of water. That’s the bottom and see this small blue beacon? That’s your jig. Now twitch your rod. See it bounce up and down? Look. That’s a fish.” Jason and Todd did their very best, to sum up years and years of experience in a short three-minute introductory lesson. Then the boys eventually cut the cord and went back to catching fish. They were both landing jumbo perch, and monster bluegills left and right while I was still trying to figure out these damn orange and yellow sonar flashes in the freezing cold. Any luck Spencer? No! My patience was running thin. Jason’s son and his precious six-year-old granddaughter swung by just before dusk. Fishing is important to all of the Brittons even on school nights. Young Aaliyah was all bundled up, and she made me laugh several times. The spunky kindergartener from Lyter Elementary absolutely hammered them. “Pap. I got another perch,” Aaliyah explained. “That’s my third pap. Three perch. Hey mister. Why aren’t you catching anything?” Okay. I was now crushed. Maybe it just

along with canning a layup as the Dragon’s took an 11-7 lead into halftime. Prior to playing hero down the stretch, Kelleher excelled through the third quarter, connecting on her team’s only three and finishing with seven points. “Our defense throughout the game was really good,” Kelleher said. “All of the girls worked really hard in the third quarter especially. It was my job to hit the shot in the third because everybody was stepping it up.” Kelleher has been outstanding for the Dragons. If they can keep things moving there’s a good chance she will have an opportunity to convert that into something special in the postseason.

“That’s what it comes down to. A lot of these girls are juniors and seniors, and they know how to handle situations. They did a good job of that.” Kelleher helped the Dragons finish the first quarter with a two-point lead. As the defense clamped down to limit Shamokin to just three points in the first quarter, the offense went cold. Kelleher knew her team needed something to happen and she delivered with a drive, basket, and foul. After getting set, Kelleher drained her free throw to set the final total of the quarter. With the Dragons holding a slim lead, Kelleher continued to perform. She hit two more free throws in the second
