Presidential Perspective

A

s President Obama finishes up his eight years in the White House, one thing is blatantly obvious—there has never been a time in American history when ‘We the People’ need to unite as one for the good of our Nation more than the present. We are truly blessed to have all the prosperity and opportunity we do as American citizens. However, there seems to be division created by selfishness, difference in political opinion, lack of common sense and, in some cases, the acceptance of criminal acts and evil behavior as a political statement. These actions know no color and do not discriminate. They are simply wrong and intolerable. Our Country is facing many challenges—from ISIS and North Korea at the top of the list from a national security standpoint, to border control and homeland security. My question is not about what President Donald Trump’s plan is as much as where do you start? A national debt that continues to spin out of control, and an economy that I don’t care what anyone

says, is on the brink of disaster, and you can think of the next items to add to the list for Mr. Trump. Folks, there is a lot that needs addressing, fixing and in some cases just plain throwing out and starting over. Did I mention a national news media that seems to want to always find the worst of the worst and create a slant of division among fellow Americans? Whether it be by race, political affiliation or what someone else ate for dinner, the freedom of the First Amendment has seemed to turn into not reporting the news, but creating division and more news. Social media and its use for negativity and quite honestly evil also fuels the fire. This is an individual’s choice to use their First Amendment right in a way that is detrimental to the good. I do have some good news for you my friends; we live in the United States of America. We can address and fix our problems, but we have to unite and do it together. Government, no matter if you’re a Democrat or Republican, cannot change our course, we must as individuals hold government

accountable, make the choice to be accountable for our actions and, “Ask not what your Country can do for you, but what you can do for your Country.” – President John F. Kennedy We have to become Jim One Nation Under God. Webb, Jr. We have to go back to work for the good of the freedom we are blessed with and for the perseverance of that very freedom for our children and future generations. There are too many Americans living off our Nation and fellow Americans’ efforts—this must stop. Again this begins with personal choice but also accountability created by leadership. One thing that gets me fired up beyond belief is when I watch the reports and hear the stories about fellow Americans rooting against Donald Trump to succeed as President. This is a small segment of the far liberal left, that won’t accept him as President and want him to fail at all costs. Folks, that is wanting our Country to fail. We need whomever the President is to make good decisions and govern our Great Nation for the good of our future.

An interesting twist on this is that they want to portray this as the view of the Democratic Party. This is not the view of the Democratic Party; it is a view of a small portion who associate themselves with the Democratic Party. Truth be told it was the Democrats that would not vote for Hillary and voted for President-Elect Trump that won him the Oval Office. After President Obama was elected I wrote that we needed to come together and support our President for the good of our Nation. We must do the same for President Trump. For those of you wondering, my pen will hold Mr. Trump responsible no differently than Mr. Obama. But he first must be given a chance and an opportunity to succeed by all of us. Remember if he wins with his policy and actions, we all win. God Bless America.

I

know a lot of people resolve to eat better and lose weight in the New Year. As someone who has definitive rules about not running unless I am being chased, I am probably not the person to give workout advice. However, I can help with the eating better part. Really eating healthy comes down to some basic tenants. High protein, clean carbs (e.g. whole grains versus anything with enriched white flour), and healthy fats (e.g. avocado vs. whatever is in mayonnaise). I’m also a big believer in the 85/15 rule. Meaning, try to eat clean and healthy 85% of the time and let yourself indulge 15%. This makes eating healthy more sustainable and doesn’t leave you feeling deprived. Want cake? Eat cake, but eat a slice not half the cake. Another tip is meal planning. Listen, I’m not saying you need to spend your Sunday cooking all day and portioning out meals. That is a great way to stay on track, but again, I am all about sustainability. What I mean is sitting down and making a physical game plan

of what you are going to eat throughout the week. There are a lot of great apps out there for this, but I really prefer an oldSteph fashioned pen and Nordstrom paper. I normally only plan out dinners, but here is how I do this: I sit down on Sunday with my recipe binder, a tablet and my laptop. First I hit up the grocery store’s website to see the flyer and see what is on sale. Then I start to match up recipes and sales. I also hit up a couple of coupon sites to save a little more money. Erik is probably tired of how often I mutter, “Coupons and deals, coupons and deals,” in response to his questions about why I bought eight packs of ready rice or four packages of paper towels. Once I have my dinner plan for the week, the recipes and/or list goes on the fridge. This way we know what we are having each night and it also serves as a reminder in case I need to take something out of the freezer the night

before for the next day’s dinner. Then it is just a matter of finishing out the odds and ends on my list, gathering up my coupons and hitting the store. Bonus grocery store tip for saving money and calories—I sort my list by department: produce, deli, meat, dairy, frozen and the stuff in the middle. I buy what is on my list. I buy only what is on my list. This keeps random snacks from ‘jumping’ into my cart. See, money and calories. This planning process may take a bit of time, but it is a big help to your waistline and budget in the long run. There is no easier way to get caught up in a bad eating habit than getting home after a long day and having the, “What do you want for dinner?” “I don’t know, what do you want for dinner?” debate. In my house, this almost always ends with some sort of delivery or fast food run. Planning ahead not only keeps your diet healthier, but it also saves quite a bit of money—especially if you have a bigger family. At the end of the day lean meat, fresh veggies, healthy grains and a bit of planning are all you really need to get started on your way to a healthier you this year.

r. Martin Luther King, Jr., believed strongly in service to others and promoting the concept of brotherhood to all people, on what would been his 88th birthday, King and his concept of service to others, will be celebrated locally with weeklong activities beginning January 16. On Monday, January 16, 2017, STEP AmeriCorps, Pennsylvania College of Technology, Lycoming College and Beloved Community Council will collaborate to host a Peace Walk and service projects throughout Lycoming and Clinton Counties as part of the nationwide Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service. MLK Day 2017 will be the 10th year that STEP AmeriCorps has organized activities for the day of service. Congress designated Martin Luther King, Jr. Day as a national day of service in 1994, making it the only federal holiday to receive that designation. The organization charged with leading the service efforts, the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS), calls for it to be a “day on, not a day off.” The programs of CNCS, which include AmeriCorps, serve communities at over 60,000 locations nationwide; locally, STEP AmeriCorps members serve at 21

sites, helping non- profits meet community needs and build their capacity to serve. During the 2015- 2016 program year, STEP AmeriCorps members contributed over 25,000 hours of service to local organizations. The MLK Day of Service empowers individuals, strengthens communities, bridges barriers, creates solutions to social problems, and moves us closer to Dr. King’s vision of a beloved community. It calls for Americans from all walks of life to work together to provide solutions to our most pressing national problems. This year, STEP AmeriCorps is expanding the service project area to include sites in both Lycoming and Clinton counties to maximize impact and galvanize volunteers from a broad geographic area. “It seems more important than ever that community members unite and work towards finding common ground,” Daryl Kern, an official of STEP AmeriCorp, told Webb Weekly. “When we work together serving our community we build trust and respect for one another. MLK Day of Service is a wonderful stepping-stone for families and individuals to give back and find that common ground. I am very excited to be part of our 10th MLK Day of Service.” The Peace Walk will begin at 9 a.m. on

to Unite on Common Ground”, conducted by Beloved Community Council at City Alliance Church, 420 Elmira street at 6:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. To wrap up “Dream Week,” on Thursday, January 19, Guest speaker Rev. Dr. Jamie Washington will talk about “The Content of Our Character: Doing the work to live out the Dream of Inclusion”. This will be held at the Pennsylvania College of Technology’s ACC Auditorium at 7 p.m. Richard James, co-chairman of the Beloved Community Council explained the Dream Week activities this way, “Every year the Beloved Community Council, STEP AmeriCorps, Lycoming College and Pennsylvania College of Technology and others make Dr. King’s dream of a beloved community a reality,” James said. “Through cooperation, collaboration and coordination, we serve the community and honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s legacy. The annual event has become a Williamsport family friendly tradition. “In a time of intense political partisan bickering, increased social polarization and heightened racial, gender, and religious divisions in our country, the Beloved Community Council’s mission is more important than ever.” Mary Woods, chairman of the Beloved Community Council summarized things by saying, “If we want a better future, we must co-create it. When people unite together in common purpose, we can change the world, and now is our time.”

magine a business that was considering coming to Lycoming County. This proposed company would employ over 600 people, have an operating budget of $100 million, occupy seven major buildings and a number of smaller ones, and somehow or other would impact every member of the community? Actually, we do not have to imagine—this is a description of the Lycoming County government. It is useful to stand back and look at county government from an organizational standpoint. Overseeing this massive operation are three elected officials—Jack McKernan, Tony Mussare, and Rick Mirabito, the County Commissioners. They are served by twelve department heads who, in turn, oversee the hundreds of employees that work in these various departments. These workers do everything from collecting taxes, counting votes,

updating computers, making maps, helping vets, recycling garbage, repairing buildings, answering 911 calls, judging law violators, putting some of those law violator folks in jail, watching those folks in jail, watching those folks when they get out of jail, and a seemingly endless list of other activities. At the first 2017 meeting of the County Commissioners on Tuesday, January 3rd, almost all the business had to do with renewing contracts for the new year, and also approving a long list of employee reclassifications that would result in pay increases. COUNTY

these rather trying economic times, it is easy to succumb to what could be called ‘employment envy’. There are many who have not received a raise in years, so when they hear of an overall 2.5 percent salary increase to the county employees, combined with a roll call from among them who will receive even more, it does not exactly set well. Perhaps showing some sensitivity to these salary issues. The commissioners did not routinely approve the requests, but made personal comments on almost every single one of the individuals that were being considered for reclassification (code word for ‘promotion’). The employees in the Veterans Affairs Department, for example, bring in some $10 million in revenue to county Vets, which is used in the area for housing, food, retail expenses, etc. So, in other words, their hard work in helping the Vets helps businesses and retailers for the entire area. Yes, a county payroll of $28 million seems like a lot of money (probably because it is a lot of money), but

the ‘bang for the buck’ that the county receives from these 600 plus employees is worth much, much more. It is not a coincidence that Lycoming County is one of the best-run counties in Pennsylvania. The aforementioned Veterans Department is arguably the best in the state. They are not alone; our judges, our sheriff, our coroner, and other officials all serve on high-level state boards. Their experience and expertise is highly valued. Every good business lives or dies by the quality of those who work for it. Though we as customers are often impressed by fancy stores, well packaged products, enticing advertising—all of it is not worth squat if there are not people behind it all making it work. And good employees can make more out of less, TM the best out of a mess. For Lycoming County, the proof is in the pudding. On close examination of the people employed by the county government, from top to bottom, you can see they are as good as any that can be found anywhere.

DEER

As my search continued, I came upon a small rock outcropping that created a funnel in a saddle between two ridges. I scouted the area, and sure enough, a wellworn trail passed directly under the cliff. With rubs and scrapes littering the trail, I quickly became determined to find an elevated spot in the rocks to set up my vantage point. It was perfect. By 5 p.m. I was settled in and ready for the evening hunt. It was a good set-up. A light rain began to fall. It was quiet. No wind. Perfect. Darkness settled in quickly, so I began formulating my morning plan. I would climb the mountain long before daylight and would be in position about an hour before legal shooting time. I was excited to have finally found a spot I believed in and was eager to get back to camp and into my warm sleeping bag. When shooting light had completely faded, I gathered my gear and stuffed my heavy clothes into my pack. I then turned to take my first step. Both feet went out from underneath me and I fell down to the next ledge, landing squarely on my back. In my haste, I had completely ignored the rain, or should I say freezing rain. It was a magnificent fall. While still lying flat on my back, I began to take inventory. Arms and legs work. I can move my fingers and wiggle my toes. I don’t seem to be in pain. It was obvious that my pack full of heavy clothes had saved the day. My aluminum arrows were not as fortunate. As I lay there in the darkness,

I could hear a deer passing through the area. I slowly lifted my head and watched a doe scramble up and over the slippery rocks. The icy conditions didn’t seem to affect her one bit. There she stood at the top of the ridge, silhouetted against the gray sky. With arrows bent hopelessly beyond repair, my hunting trip ended early. I was disappointed, but as most hunters will tell you, occasionally going home empty handed is a necessary part of the hunting lifestyle. If we were successful every time, it wouldn’t be called hunting. A few weeks later, I was reading my Bible when I came across Psalm 18:31-32. When I read the words, “He makes my feet like the feet of a deer; and enables me to stand on the heights”, I immediately thought of Westchester County. King David, the author of Psalm 18, must have been a hunter. Our world is full of slippery rocks—temptations that can cause us to stumble, doubt or even fall. But God has given us “feet like the feet of a deer” to help us stand securely in our faith. In this New Year, read God’s Word regularly, pray without ceasing, be filled with the Spirit, participate in the Body of Christ and engage the mission of God. As you do, He will “enable you to stand on the heights”. By the way, I returned to Westchester County in 1993 and enjoyed a very successful hunt, but I’ll save that story for some future therapy.

It’s Winter Driving Awareness Week. By Lou Hunsinger Jr.

A

s we are now past the holiday season, we are now perhaps more aware that it is winter and all the potential dangers and challenges that it may produce, including while you are driving. With the onset of winter, it’s important to know how to travel safely and deal with the adverse weather conditions. Chris Smith, Community Traffic Safety Project, suggests you follow the winter travel safety guidelines advised by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). “Safe winter travel requires more than just driving safely,” says Smith. “It also involves planning ahead and having both vehicle and

driver prepared for winter emergencies,” Smith told Webb Weekly. Plan Your Travel and Route Keep yourself and others safe by planning ahead before you venture out into bad weather. Check the weather, road conditions and traffic. Plan to leave early if necessary. If road conditions are hazardous, avoid driving if possible. Don’t rush! Allow plenty of time to get to your destination safely. Familiarize yourself with directions and maps before you go, even if you use a GPS system. Let others know your route and anticipated arrival time. Before driving your vehicle, clean snow, ice or dirt from the windows, the forward sensors, headlights, taillights and backup camera.

EXERCISE YOUR HEART IN MORE WAYS THAN ONE.

Stock Your Vehicle Carry items in your vehicle to handle common winter driving-related tasks, such as cleaning off your windshield, and any supplies you might need in an emergency. Keep the following on hand: • Snow shovel, broom and ice scraper. • Abrasive materials such as sand or kitty litter, in case your vehicle gets stuck in the snow. • Jumper cables, flashlight (check batteries) and warning devices such as flares and emergency markers. • Blankets for protection from the cold. • A cell phone with charger, water, food and any necessary medicine (for longer trips or when driving in lightly populated areas). • Keep your gas tank close to full. Get Your Vehicle Serviced “No one wants their car to break down in any

season,” says Smith, “but especially not in cold or snowy winter weather.” Get your vehicle serviced for the season: • Check your battery—when the temperature drops, so does battery power. • Check your cooling system—when coolant freezes, it expands, which can potentially damage your vehicle’s engine block. Refer to your vehicle owner’s manual for specific recommendations on coolant. • Fill your windshield washer reservoir with high-quality “winter” fluid with de-icer. Buy extra to keep in your vehicle. • Check your windshield wipers and defrosters. Safe winter driving depends on achieving and maintaining the best visibility possible. • Check floor mat installation—be sure

floor mats are correctly installed to prevent interfering with the accelerator or brake pedal. Inspect Your Tires If you plan to use snow tires, have them installed before the snow storms hit. Check out www.safercar.gov for tire ratings before buying new ones. Check to ensure your tires, including your spare, are properly inflated. Check the label inside the driver’s doorframe or in the vehicle owner’s manual. Check for sufficient tread with no uneven wear and that the rubber is in good overall condition. Tire rubber starts to degrade after several years. Older tires may need to be replaced even if they have not seen much wear. Check tire pressure when tires are ‘cold’— meaning they haven’t been driven on for at least three hours. Driving in Winter Conditions Drive slowly. It’s hard to control or stop your vehicle on a slick or snow covered surface. Increase your following distance enough so you’ll have plenty of time to stop for vehicles ahead of you. Know what kind of brakes your vehicle has and how to use them properly. If you find yourself in a skid, stay calm and ease your foot off the gas while carefully steering in the direction you want the front of your vehicle to go. Learn What to Do in a Winter Emergency If you are stopped or stalled in wintery weather, follow these safety rules: Stay with your vehicle and don’t overexert yourself.

Put bright markers on the antenna or windows and keep the interior dome light turned on. Avoid asphyxiation from carbon monoxide poisoning. Don’t run your vehicle for long periods with the windows up or in an enclosed space. If you must run your vehicle, clear the exhaust pipe of any snow and run it sporadically—just long enough to stay warm. Protect Yourself and Your Loved Ones Remember to always wear your seat belt and make sure everyone is buckled up in age and size appropriate restraints. “As the driver, you are responsible for all passengers under age 18 to be correctly restrained regardless of where they are seated in the vehicle,” notes Smith. “This is a primary law and you as the driver will be cited.” Do not text, use a cell phone, or engage in any activities that may distract you while driving. Thick outwear can interfere with the proper harness fit of your child in his/her car seat. Instead, dress your child in lightweight clothing, make sure the harness is snug and secure, and then place a blanket around the child. Never leave your child unattended in or around your vehicle. Children under age 13 should ride in the back seat. We at Webb Weekly hope that these tips will help to ensure that you have a safer driving experience this winter. These tips are tried and true and have been thoroughly tested and researched, have been able to stand the test of time and are well worth heeding.

Initial Work on Shortway May Begin Near this City Compiled by Lou Hunsinger Jr.

C

onstruction of the Keystone Shortway may begin somewhere in Northcentral Pennsylvania, possibly near Williamsport. First word came yesterday from Z.H. Confair, chairman of the Keystone Shortway Association. He said the information is “on high authority.” Moreover, the he indicated the Shortway itself will pass within a few miles of Williamsport. Although the exact route of the Sharon to Stroudsburg superhighway remains to be fixed, two possible routes through this particular area appear on a map, which the state submitted, to the U.S. Bureau of Public Roads for approval. The road divides at Mill Hall to form a loop below Williamsport, the map shows. The northern part parallels the south bank of the Susquehanna River to a point south of Williamsport where it veers southeastward. The southern part of the loop crosses

the lower section of Clinton County and upper Union County and proceeds generally eastward to meet the northern part. Only one of these routes will be chosen as the definite route of the Shortway, however. Mr. Confair said yesterday that he personally thinks the northern route would be more favorable “from a construction point of view and because of topography. “The southern route passes through some cumbersome and rugged territory,” he said, “The northern route on the other hand, if it were extended a few more miles north of Williamsport yet, would go through comparatively flatter countryside.” Mr. Confair explained that, inasmuch as the Shortway will take at least 10 years to build, the time will give the state “ a chance to free the Pennsylvania Turnpike.” Both New Jersey and Ohio have announced intentions of building connecting links.

For 2017, I’m focusUtilize that wardrobe space for the ing on quality versus quantity, and classics—plaid, stripes, polka dots, functionality over frivolity. Here’s a Bernadette rundown of what I’ll be tossing in Ulsamer and leopard. Yes, leopard print is a classic pattern; it’s been stylish since my New Year’s closet purge and what the 1920s. I’m holding onto for the stylish year ahead. First and foremost, pieces that are too small are FINALLY getting the boot. Granted, the holiday season, with all of its extra calories and carbs, should be taken into account when trying things on. You should try things on, not just check the size on the tag. Regardless of size, if a garment doesn’t fit you properly, you need to let it go. On the flip side, oversized pieces that technically don’t fit can have potential with tailoring, or belting. Plus, baggy, looser silhouettes are very much on trend. So toss the small and keep the slack. For accessories, it’s time to donate the outdated costume jewelry you’ve been hanging onto. True, statement necklaces and earrings will probably come back around in style, but cheap plastic baubles don’t really hold up. On the other hand, classic watches and silk

Don’t forget to go through your intimates’ drawer when cleaning out your closet. There’s no better time than the New Year to get rid of worn out socks, bras, and underwear. This way, you’ll have room for your quality pieces, like silk slips, and lacey undergarments that always seem to hide behind the stretched and strained everyday pieces. Finally, it’s time to toss out the pieces you regret. Any and all purchases that caused buyer’s remorse need to go. Why hang onto shopping mistakes? Instead, give some breathing room to your investment pieces, the classic items, like your little black dress, wool trousers, and go-to sweaters. By creating more space, the garments that best serve you are more visible, hence more likely to be worn. When you’re wearing pieces that fit, flatter, and are timeless, you’ll have a very stylish year indeed!

I always thought if your vehicle had massive curb appeal to the opposite sex it was a good thing. A bonus in life. I am now discovering that whoever invented the locking glove box and center console had a reason for doing it. For people who invade another person’s property! If your cell phone and laptop are “open game” for your partner to pry open and check text messages and e-mails, then the glove box is prime fodder for curious eyes. What would Birgit find in mine? The owner’s manual packet. A

Pennsylvania map with some loose directions scribbled on scrap paper. A few loose screws. A pen—i.e., nothing out of the ordinary for a single guy who is always on the run. This would be to her chagrin-especially if she wanted to “put me on the hook.” God has saved me twice from prematurely leaving this earth. In this regard Birgit is onto something. “Of much greater interest is the clue and the driver if the man keeps a patron saint in his car. A little statue perhaps, even a St. Christopher

medal velcroed to the dashboard. Bespeaking a pious and serious man, guided by a higher power when driving. A testimonial to a man who knows how to navigate in the world. With such a man, the past and present unfold in an orderly pattern, holding a promise of experiences that transcend the here and now. With such a man, one doesn’t mind moving forward, even in the passing lane, into an auspicious future.” Decoding my glove box may not give me away. Ultimately, delving into my faith and belief, surely will. PA #121099

No bobble heads or Hawaiian skirt dancers on top of my dashboard. No air fresheners dangling from the mirror or vents—they try so hard to smell ‘good’ that they smell ‘bad.’

New Law to Affect Refunds in 2017

T would like to congratulate our agents on their achievements in 2016!

he IRS has announced initial plans for processing tax returns involving the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC) during the opening weeks of the 2017 filing season. The IRS is sharing the information now to help the tax community prepare for the 2017 season This action is driven by the Protecting Americans from Tax Hikes Act

of 2015 (PATH Act) that was enacted into law on December 18, 2015. Section 201 of this new law mandates that no credit or refund for an overpayment for a taxable year shall be made to a taxpayer before February 15 if the taxpayer claimed the Earned Income Tax Credit or Additional Child Tax Credit on the return. This change begins January 1, 2017, and may affect some returns filed early in 2017.

ep, if you are really a serious hunter you are probably already aware that the season starts tomorrow morning. Sure, the word is that a good number of hunters throughout our area have venison burger tucked away in the freezer and back straps available for the grill. Some even got their fall turkey and the really lucky ones added a black bear to their recent success. A few were less fortunate and will have to count on store bought beef, chicken and pork to make it through the months ahead. Yet, while the legal seasons really don’t get underway until spring gobbler season and then the fall seasons, the season to greatly influence your chance for success begins tomorrow. If you really want to up your chances at bringing home free range, nutritious and chemical-free wild game meat, the things you can do during the next few months can greatly better your odds. The planning and executing of a habitat project or two can easily be accomplished over these otherwise activity-free winter months. One of the greatest habitat improvement ideas that we have discussed before is a small clearcut in a woods setting that can later be turned into a food plot. With snow on the ground, it is much easier to access just where the more active game

trails are crossing the property you are hunting. If possible, you might try to develop a cutting—and future food plot— near a crossing point of multiple active game trails. By dropping all of the trees now in this future food plot, you make available a much needed food source in the form of twigs and buds that deer will use as a supplement to their stored fat and dwindling supply of acorns. Making the cutting to be ¼ to ½ acre will allow it to be more manageable when clearing and planting later. Consider doing further cutting of trees around the perimeter of the opening by “hinge-cutting” some of the trees. Hinge cutting is accomplished by not cutting all the way through the tree, but stopping short so that the tree tips over and still has a portion of its trunk uncut—allowing minerals and nutrients to continue to flow through the cambium layer and keep the tree alive. In the spring the tree will bud out, then leaf out and provide a living “hedge” of cover around the perimeter of the opening. This cover might help provide a more ideal location for a climber stand or ladder stand once the food plot is established. While the chainsaw is sharp, consider clearing and enhancing existing trails, old logging roads and log landings. Deer, bear and turkeys are like humans in that they like to take the easy way most

aspen tree is cut down, frequently they will reestablish by root regeneration, where seedlings will actually sprout along the root line of the old tree. By cutting a number of mature aspens in close proximity to each other, you will first provide needed feed for deer and later, as the seedlings become saplings and small trees, you will provide improved habitat for our state bird—the ruffed grouse. With the majority of the hunting seasons closed or coming to a close, you can begin a new “season” by gathering up a few tools, heading to the woods and begin preparing for what future seasons might provide. Not only will the habitat be better, but you will be in better shape to climb the hills when spring gobbler season begins in less than four short months!

You can keep the game using the same trails by removing fallen logs and limbs that make the game walk around these obstacles. By keeping the game using these same trails, you can assure greater success from nearby stands. By using the hinge cutting technique described above, you could drop several trees alongside a trail or cross trails in such a fashion as to create a pinch point—forcing the game to funnel through a tighter spot. This, then, becomes an excellent location for a nearby tree stand. It is well known that ruffed grouse like areas that have early growth stage aspen seedlings and trees. Further, when an

are critical to the reproduction of certain mussels in the river; mussel larvae temporarily attach to eels. Mussels in turn help filter and clean water, so the added mussel population may help clean the rivers water. In the Delaware River, which harbors good mussel populations it is estimated that mussels can filter 2—6 billion gallons of water and remove 78 tons of sediment each day. Fortunately the eel recovery program is doing much better than the shad recovery program. Survey results show good growth and good hold over of the introduced eels especially in Buffalo Creek. Don’t be surprised if you do indeed see a snake—like creature swimming beneath your boat some evening while fishing the Susquehanna.

dams has maintained an eel population, but the Susquehanna—due tto the dams— has obviously had difficulties. Fortunately eels unlike shad are much easier and less costly to move over the dams. Eels are able to follow a trickle of water into several feet of plastic pipes into holding tanks where they are then transported upstream and released into streams flowing into the Susquehanna River. From 2010-13 118,642 eels have been released into Buffalo Creek; over 22,000 more eels have been transported this year as well. Since 2006 biologists have stocked almost 840,000 eels in the Susquehanna River and another 122,000 were transported and released into Pine Creek in northern Pennsylvania. An added bonus to the eels repopulating the river is that eels

“U

nconscionable”. That was the word that got me. A few weeks before Christmas I received an excitable call from my daughter, Denise, asking the question she already knew the answer to. She had been offered four tickets to the January 1, Philadelphia Eagles/ Dallas Cowboys game by her boss, who had made a decision to travel to Pasadena for Penn State’s Rose Bowl game. Given that the beloved Cowboys are the team of choice in the Lowery family, I immediately signed on to go. Although Denise did not follow through on my suggestion that her first born be named Troy Emmitt, after Cowboy greats Troy Aikman and Emmitt Smith, grandson Chase and his cousin Tucker comprised our travel squad. With the Cowboys having already clinched the NFC East and home field advantage for the playoffs and the Eagles eliminated from post-season contention the regular season matchup proved meaningless relative to the standings. However, for the grandsons this was their first NFL game and they were excited. Knowing and experiencing the vociferousness of the Eagles fan base

on previous occasions the grandsons were warned not to be decked out in their Cowboy apparel. Torn between his Cowboy loyalty and concern for personal safety, Chase choose to wear a Cowboy sweatshirt concealed under an outer jacket with a Dallas ski cap tucked inside the pocket. The younger Scott Lowery Tucker was taking no chances, wearing no Cowboy gear. Stopping for a pit stop on the PA Turnpike, the boys got an early indication as to their ‘apparel warning.’ Feeling pretty brave at 9:00 a.m. and 90 miles away Chase headed inside with his Cowboy sweatshirt proudly displayed. It took but a moment for a group of green-clad Eagles fans to proclaim exactly what they thought of his choice of team wear. As the group returned to their nearby vehicle the name across the back on one of their jerseys read J----s. Translation—a name reference for a donkey. With giggles and snapshots from his phone the image was recorded for posterity. The prime Club Level seats came with a parking pass that allowed for a great parking location. Arriving at the lot, tailgaters were well into their pregame festivities. Driving through the lot we could not find a spot

Why you shouldn’t allow the nursing home to prepare your Medicaid application Your loved one requires nursing home care, possibly long-term, which is prohibitively expensive. You’re frightened, you’re watching someone you love fade away and it feels like the earth is falling out from underneath your feet. Suddenly, you’re alone with a mountain of concerns and paperwork and nobody to explain what it means. Enter the nursing home admissions officer or social worker. These are wellmeaning folks who have a sincere desire to help. And they offer to prepare the Medicaid application for you. Sounds pretty good at that point, right? Not really and here’s why. Nursing homes are for-profit institutions and although they typically take good care of your loved-ones’ daily needs they are not in the business of, nor are they trained to look out for your financial welfare. Nursing homes are paid by you at their private-pay rate. When you are no longer able to pay that rate then most will accept the state’s Medicaid rate. The private-pay rate is higher than the Medicaid rate. It’s simple mathematics really. The sooner the patient qualifies for Medicaid benefits the more money is saved for the spouse or family. A nursing home employee, however well-intentioned, is not legal counsel and allowing them to file the Medicaid application is at best a short-sighted effort that could cost you and your family a lot of money. There are rules in place to provide many individuals with legal options for alternative, acceptable means to protect assets rather than paying for nursing home care. Careful planning even in a crisis situation, by a Medicaid experienced attorney or Certified Medicaid Planner™, can preserve your assets. Think before you sign anything. And call us. We will work for you.

kettle black’, immediately came to mind. Moments later I knew I was in Philly as about two-thirds of the assembled 69,000 lent their voices to an arousing cheer of “Dallas s---s.” The women in front of us joined in. She obviously didn’t think that was ‘unconscionable.’ The Cowboys rested their stars for the upcoming playoffs. After Romo’s cameo appearance the game was uninspiring. The Eagles won. The home crowd was happy. Chase took off his knit cap giving it to his mother saying, “Here keep this, I don’t want to get yelled at.” A stadium usher heard the remark and told him, “I don’t think anyone will bother you. If they do, just tell them the Cowboys made the playoffs.” Returning to the parking lot we discovered we had left a car window completely open. Thinking the belongings inside would be ransacked; we found to our surprise that nothing had been touched. We even witnessed Eagles fans helping Dallas fans who were having car trouble. Similar to the advice Dorothy received in the ‘Wizard of Oz’, I didn’t think I was in Philly anymore! *** Nittany Lion Heartbreak: In a season with a disappointing beginning and a heartbreak ending, the nine games in between restored the roar to Happy Valley and won a Big Ten championship. There isn’t a Penn State fan alive that wouldn’t have signed up for that deal back in September. It was a season to remember!

to park, when Denise spotted an Eagle party taking up two spots, one for their car and another for party gear. Never one for shyness, Denise rolled down the window and asked them if both spots were taken. I was fearful of what verbal response would be forthcoming when they simply said they would move the gear and open up the spot for us. This couldn’t be the same Philly fans I knew, was my thought. Surprisingly Cowboys fans were everywhere—proudly displaying their colors. Off came Chase’s coat, on went his ski cap and the boys tossed around a football amongst the Eagles crowd. A few passes were playfully deflected away by those wearing Eagles green & white. Inside the stadium the first noticeably anti-Dallas sentiments did not come until Tony Romo entered the game in the second quarter for his first game action of the season. Each of the six snaps he took were loudly booed by the home crowd until the Cowboy veteran led his team into the end zone with a touchdown pass for a 10-3 Dallas lead. To my right were three young Dallas fans that used the moment to bravely cheer the accomplishment. It was then that a women sitting in front of us turned to the boys with her “unconscionable” comment, adding “We paid a lot of money for these seats, which your parents probably bought for you. You need to be more respectful of those around you,” she admonished. I smiled as the reference, ‘the pot calling the

he 2016 high school football season was one for the ages. So many of our local teams were successful. The individual accolades continue to pile up and I now need another limb to count the number of All-State honorees. Kudos to ARE area coaches and players for an amazing ride. OK. That’s enough I promise. But incredible run boys. Thanks. I wanted to tell you about one player in particular. This talented kid has already overcome many obstacles in his young career. Often times he is the best player

on the field or court, but his qualities that don’t show up on a stat sheet are what makes him a superstar. I first met Loyalsock’s Marcus Williams a few years back and I guess you can say we are now friends. I got to call a few of his football games this fall. I was immediately impressed with his abilities and I was extremely pleased to hear that Marcus was recently tagged All-State. “Marcus had a tremendous football season,” Lancer Coach Justin VanFleet explained. “He is one of the hardest

“It was tough,” Marcus reflected. “But I did what I could to stay involved. I was at every function and still believed I could contribute to the team.” “Marcus is a true leader,” Van Fleet continued. “He is someone people should look up too. Marcus has a gift. He is one of those kids that brings out the best in everyone.” The stocky Williams also excels on the hardwood. He is the starting point guard for CI’s surging Lancers. Marcus is a very tough matchup and plays with a passion. He is an honor roll student and is adored by the student body. My man even plays a mean trumpet. Like Coach said. The kid does it all. Marcus Williams is well on his way. He is living proof that perseverance and hard work pays off. Marcus was dealt some tough cards last fall. He could have given up. But my man looked adversity in the eye and doubled down. His high school dream is now true. Marcus Williams is All-State and his picture will be on the wall. “Marcus is exceptional,” Legendary Coach Ron Insinger said. “He is one of those special players that comes around maybe once every decade. Like football. Marcus is our leader and does so much for us on the court. We missed him last season but man we are glad that he is back.” Well said Coach. Congratulations kid. You deserve it pal. What a difference a year makes. Cheers.

working players I ever had. Marcus is a gifted athlete, but he means so much more. You can’t measure his impact on a stat sheet. The kid does it all.” Marcus led the Lancers in several offensive and defensive categories. Jamie Spencer He tallied 1,788 allpurpose yards and scored a prodigious 22 touchdowns. #thesaurus. Marcus was a deep threat wherever he lined up. The kid averaged a stunning 21.6 per catch. He was lethal in the open field. The PIAA named Marcus to the 2016 All-State Football team as an Athlete. What an honor. “I am still shocked,” the humble senior told me via Skype. “I guess it really hasn’t set in yet. I owe a lot to my teammates and coaches. But I am just so thankful to be back on the field again.” OK folks. Here comes the kicker. What makes Marcus’ achievements and stats so much more impressive is that he sat out the entire 2015 season due to injury. Well Marcus played in one game and scored a touchdown his junior year. But on that long run he went down with scary ACL/MCL tear. The poor kid was done. No more football. Hoops and track were out too. I could only imagine. Bad luck.
