The Truth about Executive Order

I

always get a good laugh when we are going to get that big winter storm and everyone stocks up on everything from bread to ammunition. Do they really believe they are going to be snowbound for days, weeks, maybe a month? Then you know what happens? It misses us. Some are happy; some are sad because that sled, snowmobile or pair of cross country skis that will continue to gather dust. I used to wish for the “big one” to shut school down like it was the Ice Age, now a little snow would be nice as long as it doesn’t disrupt anything. One thing I can tell you, the Webbs always have plenty of bread, milk and ammunition if you run out. Snow or no snow! Speaking of ammunition, thanks to all who reached out and discussed Mr. Obama’s use of the Executive Order to curb gun violence by targeting the law-abiding citizens. I hope he continues to target our Second Amendment rights – every time he does gun sales go through the roof, ammo sales do the same and the sale of a gun to a first time buyer goes off the charts. Bottom line is every time Mr. Obama says the word gun it is like a call to action for every believer in the Constitution, everyone who hunts, fishes and understands man’s place and standing in nature and everyone who is fearful about crime and the violent acts that are becoming more and more common, including law-enforcement. Did I mention the NRA? Mr. Obama unites conservative America more than the Republican Party could ever do. The number one question or issue folks wanted to talk about was can the President use

the Executive Order to alter, change or amend the Constitution, in this case the Second Amendment? The answer unfortunately, is yes. Our first Congress during the early days of our Great Nation gave the President the power of Executive Order. Our first President, George Washington used the power on eight occasions. Article II of the Constitution gives the President the power to manage National affairs and the workings of government. The President can issue rules, regulations and instructions which have the binding force of law without congressional approval. They can however be subject to judicial review, interpretation and be overturned if found not to be law abiding. This power was intended to be used to help not to hinder or change. Even in dealing with war the President has the power to use Executive Order. In 1973 Congress passed the War Powers Act, to limit the ability of the Office of President to conduct warfare without congressional approval. However, the President can still send troops to foreign countries for hostile reason without congressional consent as long as he notifies Congress within 48 hours of taking action. The President has a lot more power than we have ever seen used in the past in regards to constitutional issues, like the Second Amendment and also social issues like healthcare and gay and lesbian marriage. In the past a President was elected by the people and it was assumed he would work with Congress and within the guidelines of the Constitution. That he would respect the

rights of each State. There was an assumed code of ethics and standards of the Executive Office that has not been challenged until Mr. Obama. Mr. Obama’s use of Executive Orders in every case however is legal and binding. He has issued an Executive Jim Order 224 times. This Webb, Jr. is well below the 381 of President Reagan; President Franklin Delano Roosevelt has the record, using his Executive Order 3,522 times. I’m sure Mr. Obama will add to his number. I have always thought of Executive Order as a wartime, financial crisis, natural disaster and foreign-policy privilege of the President to help our Country at a time of need. I don’t believe Mr. Obama has used his Executive Power how our Forefathers intended. The circumvention of Congress was designed as a protection of our Country for when members could not be gathered in the case of emergency. Remember when our Nation was founded serving in Washington wasn’t a full time job and traveling to Washington wasn’t as easy as jumping on a plane. It was intended in case of emergency or when a decision needed to be made immediately in the best interest of our Country. Everyday Players There is no better place for a high school basketball game than Williamsport High School’s Magic Dome. To play in front of a

Mr. Larry Bassett, ‘Voice of the Millionaires’. packed house, to feel the electricity, to hear the roar of the crowd and that distinctive voice over the PA system highlighting the game. The ‘Voice of the Millionaires’, as it has come to be known, is that of Mr. Larry Bassett. He has been the public address announcer for going on 30 years. His style and ability to enhance the game make it special for everyone in attendance, including the players. He is the voice of football, wrestling and track and field for the Cherry and White. Mr. Bassett also announces JV and middle school events. His work during the District IV and Sectional tournaments has earned him induction into the District IV Hall of Fame. Mr. Bassett is a retired English teacher from WHS. Many folks may not know he is a published author of fiction, nonfiction and poetry. He also can be found on occasion in schools, coffee houses, libraries and galleries performing his “Got Poetry?” show – and you thought he was just the voice of the Millionaires! At the end of the game Mr. Bassett goes home to wife Karen and their three cats. Tip of the cap to you, Larry. I can’t wait to make that next trip up to the Magic Dome. God Bless America.

I

am not a huge fan of winter, but growing up in the north, I have come to appreciate the occasional snowstorm. Every winter should have one. Are you listening Mother Nature? One. ONE good storm. As I am writing, areas south of us are preparing to get hit fairly hard with a nasty storm and they are already getting hit with what I like to call the ‘French Toast Frenzy’. I will never quite understand what possesses people to go out and stock up on bread, milk and eggs before a snowstorm. First and foremost they are perishables, so these aren’t going to keep you going for long if, by chance, you do get stuck inside for a considerable length of time. Like any good journalist, I had a question so I went seeking answers…to the interwebz I went! The first thing that I found suggested that buying perishables like eggs and milk is purely psychological. Buying food that will spoil quickly is a subconscious way to convince yourself that storm won’t be so bad and you will be unstuck and back to business as usual pretty quickly. However, stocking up on Spaghetti O’s and Velveeta Shells and Cheese

Olde Barn Centre ~ ANTIQUES ‘N SUCH ~

– or any selection of non-perishables not designed for 12-year-olds – sends the message that you expect the storm to keep you Steph homebound for an Nordstrom extended period. Although practical, non-perishables are a psychological admission that you’ve surrendered to waiting out the storm and its aftermath; perishables are about optimism. This idea seems a little modern, but I get it. I also understand it far more than the next explanation I read. The other idea says that New Englanders are to blame. As the story goes, they started doing this after a huge blizzard in 1978 that trapped people in their homes for days, and in some cases, weeks. Obviously, a lot of them ran out of necessities, like bread, milk and eggs. But see, I still don’t understand…even if you had stocked up on these things before a huge storm, they are only going to keep for so long. It still doesn’t make sense to me. So I kept digging (no snow pun

intended)… and then I found what is probably the most logical, if a bit less applicable explanation. In 1950 Pittsburgh got hit with a HUGE snowstorm. Like 3 feet in 24 hours huge. Apparently, inaccurate weather predictions aren’t new as they were only predicting 12 inches, so people were left less than prepared. So, they get hit with this major storm and, as a result, roadways are shut down and deliveries to grocery stores were delayed causing a shortage of – wait for it – bread and milk. An article in a local newspaper referred to bread as being “doled out” in some grocery stores and to milk as “the one shortage that has hit all sections” due to the storm. Since then it has apparently just become habit to stock up on these items as a precaution. So there you have it – the reason behind the ‘French Toast Frenzy’. It may not make a lot of sense, but tradition is tradition and, hey…who doesn’t like French toast?

Matriarch of Otto’s Bookstore Retiring By Lou Hunsinger Jr.

O

tto’s Bookstore has the slogan of “A Booklover’s Paradise” and perhaps there is no greater book lover in the Williamsport area than Betsy Rider, whose family has owned and operated the store since 1929. After more than 70 years of working and operating her family’s beloved bookstore, a downtown Williamsport business institution, Betsy at the age of 81 has decided to retire and put the store up for sale. Otto’s has had a lineage as a retail institution that goes back to 1841, making it one of the oldest independent book stores in the nation. Betsy’s father, Jack Roesgen, became involved with the store in 1905 and after several forays that took him into the book business in Philadelphia and other places, returned here in the late 1920s and at that point took over the operation of the bookstore. When Jack died in 1958, Betsy and her mother, Margaret took over operation of the store. Betsy learned the book business at the feet of a master, her father. “I learned from my father – just keep going!” and “If you can’t pay all of your publishers’ statements, pay at least part of each month.” Pray a lot,” Betsy told Webb Weekly. She said Otto’s has managed to

survive in business all of these years by broadening their selection to include the wider interests of book buyers. They rely on returns to the publishers to keep their selection as broad as possible. Otto’s reaches out via their website to offer the information customers need to attend the book “signings” held there and to allow home-bound customers the opportunity to buy their books “off the Internet” while still supporting the local economy. “I think we have become an important part of Williamsport’s downtown business scene because of Longevity. Devotion to “local” retail outlets. During the ‘60’s especially, planning and executing events that spotlight any and all downtown businesses.” She said her children have been an important part of the operation of Otto’s through the years. They learned how to make change and how to gift wrap and how to be pleasant to any and everyone. “This store has been very important to me in both the good and bad times. My heritage of family bookselling has propelled me forward during every crisis, including the death of my father, mother and husband. I have consoled myself with the thought that I was carrying on their work in life.” Betsy was asked if being such an important part of Williamsport’s downtown scene was a burden or not,

seek to have success as a business in downtown Williamsport. “Get involved in the life (such as it is) in the entire downtown community. Not too long ago I organized a “Downtown Block Party” at the Genetti (room at no cost) and got each of the restaurants to bring a tray of their special hors d’oeurves (at no cost) and got Plankenhorn’s to print up a list of questions about little known facts about downtown businesses (at no cost). I had walked around downtown asking each business to tell me three things not well known about their business. Then I placed the question sheets on each place at each of the tables and asked the volunteer at the door to request that each attendee sit at a table where he or she didn’t know the others at the table. Each table could pool their knowledge to answer their questions and when the answers were read out someone at the table would raise their hand if they had the correct answer. It was a lot of fun and lots of people learned a lot about their downtown. (at no cost).” Betsy talked about how Otto’s has changed to meet the challenge of the changing reading culture. “There’s no doubt the reading culture has changed in the last few years. When Amazon started to sell the Kindle, the American Booksellers Association started the Kobo program of e-books, which we have sold on our web site. We even had the hardware for sale in

she answered, “Hopefully, Otto’s is an important cog in the economic entity known as the downtown shopping center. That’s why we are determined, as far as we can, to sell to a local developer who intends to keep the business downtown.” There has been recognition and some highlights for Betsy and Otto’s over the years. They have won the “Bookseller of the Year” award from the New Atlantic Booksellers Association and “Small Business of the Year Award” from the Williamsport-Lycoming Chamber of Commerce. “We have been the site of a marriage proposal (complete with the bride-tobe’s favorite music) and witnessed a prominent citizen meeting his child for the first time,” Betsy said. “(The mother left town when she realized she was carrying the child of a man who was married to someone else.) One of our most satisfying accomplishments was the moving of our stock, fixtures and business machines from 25 West 4th St. to our present location. We did it without any vehicles, any packed up boxes and any costs (other than gift certificates to the volunteers who weren’t family) – all in 27 hours! We didn’t miss a single hour of business! I had drawn up maps of our old location and our new one. And I broke down the move of each shelf of books so each team of volunteers had a work sheet that they could follow without bumping into any other team.” Betsy has this advice for those who

My writing partners, Jim Quigel and Robin Van Auken and I participated in several book signings promoting our books at Otto’s. She featured our works also in her various radio commercials. Local authors have always had a friend in Betsy Rider and Otto’s Bookstore and for that we are eternally grateful. I know I speak for all of us when we wish her a warm and enjoyable retirement.

Q: Do you have knee pain? A: Amniotic Stem Cell Therapy Have You Been Told That You Need Knee Replacement Surgery? Have Traditional Injections Failed to Help Your Knee Pain? Left Knee Pain: “I was diagnosed with bone on bone in my left knee some time ago. The pain and weakness caused a severe limp, which inhibited me from doing a lot of day to day activities. After viewing the x-ray of my knee, my surgeon wondered how I was even walking, even though I had a remarkable limp. Now I have no limp and I am walking just fine. I received my amniotic stem cell injection on November 12, 2015. Two days later, for the first time in a year and a half, I got up in the morning and was able to walk to Sylvia Smith the bathroom without holding on to anything. This was so exciting! I would say that I am 80% improved.

CTL Encourages Students to Break a Leg with CAST By Jeffrey Allen Federowicz

S

hakespeare once wrote “All the world’s a stage and all the men and women merely players...” If that’s true the world will be bigger next month and the players will have a little more sparkle and shine thanks to the Community Theatre League’s new project. Soon the curtain will rise on a production that won’t be on the stage, it’ll be about the stage with CAST, Community Academy of Stage & Theatre. “The awesome thing about CAST is that our courses will not only focus on one aspect of theatre but rather our classes will take a holistic approach. Classes will be geared towards drama, musical theatre, dance and production or behind the scenes,” said Seth Sponhouse, education coordinator for this incubator of a project that will nurture interest in theatre and how it functions both on stage and off. An open house and ribbon cutting ceremony will be held at 5 p.m. Feb. 1 that will showcase a learning center that embraces the future of arts in the community. The recently remodeled 8,000 square foot space on the third floor of the Trade and Transit Center, 100 West Third St., is where CAST will be located allowing for a separate area designed for learning while having easy access to the CTL downstairs. The space will include a black box theatre, rehearsal space, dressing rooms, work areas

and studios for voice and keyboard lessons. When up and running, CAST will strive to provide a comprehensive theatre arts program where students and adults can explore, discover and develop their talents on and off stage. CAST will also serve as a regional resource for performing arts education, enhancing the quality of life for participants and the community. Just like staging a play, the path for making CAST a reality was long and tedious. “The idea for CAST started roughly two years ago and originated after seeing how successful the CTL’s summer camp programs were and continue to be,” said Sponhouse. “The students and even their parents in the area are extremely excited for the potential that CAST is offering.” Classes will range from those focusing on young students with such classes as Puppet Storytelling, Bound for Broadway, and All that Jazz! Courses designed for older students include Characters, Masks and Movement Oh My! and Tall Tales Theatre!. A very cool Stage Make Up course for the high school crowd will learn makeup techniques for not only traditional theatre productions but also for special effect scenarios. Additional classes will include set design, dance, voice and costume design to name a few. Adult courses are geared more to the

Handcrafted hand-warmer mugs made in Oregon! One cup for lefties and one for righties.

311 victories that Coach Wiser served as defensive coach, 66 were shutouts. It is not for nothing that Coach Girardi declared Steve Wiser, “The Wizard.” Steve does seem to have special gifts, especially for recognizing talent and bringing out the best in his players. A great example was in 2000, where he spotted a backup tight end by the name of Shawn McGinley. The offense did not see much of a role for the young man, and Steve asked if he could have him on his side of the ball. The coach saw that his skill set was more adapt to defense than offense. Wiser was certainly right about that — Shawn McGinley became an All-American defensive end in 2003. Yet for all his well-deserved accolades for football, this is not what Steve Wiser is most proud of. Any conversation with Coach Wiser quickly turns to the players and his relationship to them. It started with the very first player he coached, a linebacker by the name of Jimmy

ast week’s cover story was a tribute to the great Lycoming College football coach Frank Girardi, honoring him for his recent nomination to the National Football Foundation and College Football Hall of Fame. One of Coach G’s earliest recruits in the early 1970s was an excellent athlete from Bald Eagle Area High School by the name of Steve Wiser. Though he was recruited by Penn State, Steve was intrigued with the idea of going to a rebuilding program and making a difference. Even at that young age, Steve Wiser liked challenges. As hard-nosed linebacker, Steve earned two All-Conference honors, and his drive, dedication, and intelligence led Girardi to ask Wiser to join his staff as a linebacker coach after he graduated in 1975. For the next three and a half decades, Steve Wiser became one of Coach G’s most valuable assets. After a couple years as linebacker coach, Steve became Defensive Coordinator in 1977 and eventually Assistant Coach. Wiser’s defenses became legendary. His leadership led the Warriors to the No. 1 national ranking in total defense twice, and posted nationallyleading numbers in rushing defense three times and once in scoring defense. Such was the case of a student who was native to Congo who came to Lycoming in 2010. Kabongo Bukasa was a great defensive standout, but found the academics challenging. became still, he realized that his life had purpose, and it was not just on the scoreboard but to continue to make an impact on young athletes. He returned to his coaching duties with a renewed vision and hope. Rather than bitterness, Steve is extremely grateful to Lycoming College for all the opportunities they have given him over these many years. It must be comforting to the hundreds of players who have played for him through the decades to know that Coach Wiser the Wizard is still on the sidelines rooting for them; ready to give wisdom if it is wanted, a kick in the pants if warranted, and always a hand to help when wished for. Steve Wiser is a great coach, because he coaches for life.

But the young man loved the game of football, and Coach Wiser was just the man to help him succeed both on and off the field. Many an extra hour was spent encouraging and supporting this joyful but struggling student, but it all paid off when Bukasa was named all-conference Defensive Player of the Year in 2012 and when he graduated with his degree in 2014. Many expected Steve Wiser to succeed Coach Girardi after he stepped down in 2007, including Steve Wiser. The disappointment of being passed over as head coach hit him hard, and drove him back to his faith in God. When his heart

The trick to pulling off sweater, comfiest different tones in the same color jeans, and call it a day. But, it is to mix up textures. So that can be a mood pick-me-up to wool black sweater, and black experiment with some different jeans are a great monochromatic style of dressing, even when it’s look, especially if you keep the freezing out. I’ve always been texture mix going with a black a fan of monochromatic looks. leather jacket! Same goes for Bernadette lighter colors, like beige and Monochromatics, aka dressing Ulsamer ivory. A silk beige blouse, with all in one color, is a fun and functional outfitting technique a darker khaki wool trouser for winter. And even though a one-tone doesn’t have to match so much as ensemble may seem kind of boring, “go”, i.e. look good together. White is monochromatic dressing can be quite especially difficult to match up, and if striking when done right. And, with a bit you’re from the old school of style do’s of thought it can also be an easy go-to on and don’ts you’ll steer clear of white cold frosty mornings. Here are few tips until May Day. sufficient to compliment and complete a monochromatic outfit. Of course, not everyone is a fan of wearing all of one color. If you prefer to mix it up with a variety of colors try these combos: grey & pink, light blue & black, teal & red, yellow & brown are all great pairings to brighten up your winter looks. And, even though I’m all for having fun and taking stylistic chances, and while wearing all one color can be very striking chic, wearing all you of might takeandevery penney one pattern is usually overwhelming and comes across a bit silly. So yeah, go for an all out fire-engine red ensemble, but stay away from head-to-toe polka dots, stripes, florals, etc.

The Latest in Talking Toys

Barbie to respond to a question, shouted out frustration to her programmed playmate: “I’M TALKING TO YOU!” Oh well. Maybe the plastic Dino will fare better. All of his inquiries are sent to IBM’s mastermind Watson. He’s the computer that beat Jeopardy contestants on their own turf. He can even sift for age appropriate Gerry answers. Just let me know how it Ayers goes when your little darling asks Dino “How and where do babies come from,” “Why does daddy freak when the stock market crashes,” and “What’s the true meaning of radical Islam.” So, kids might not need toys that respond and, yakkety yak, do talk back. But Gerry does. And her name is Melanie. What’s Melanie going to do for me? It’s the same thing that Charles (a sprite 60 something gentleman robot marketed by Dynamo Maestro Industries) is going to do for single or widowed women in Lycoming County. He’s a sharp dresser, has a full head of hair, plays excellent golf, smells good, and has world-class charm and mystique about him. He treats women with respect, uses Shakespeare quotes and can sing Sinatra all night long into your ear. Gets serviced at any Hewlett-Packard outlet. He talks to you in a civil manner, and rarely makes a request you can’t keep. The perfect

orror of horrors, we are now entering an age of internet-connected talking dolls called Hello Barbie, Dino, Siri and My Friend Cayla. When your child talks to it, it sends a signal to cyberspace and (hopefully) comes back with an appropriate response. Some parents aren’t so wild about the idea, as they say it does nothing for their imagination. Not sure about you, but I was pretty content to make up my own adventures. I didn’t need a cyber-fueled doll egging me on. By the way, pundits of Hello Barbie have called her “stupid” and a “blabbermouth.” Once I found out that everything your child says to these dolls is stored for up to two years to be examined and tampered with, well, all bets are off. It’s one thing to take away creativity, but quite another to void the fine line of privacy. Do you really want your kid talking to a doll that keeps everything stored away like a squirrel’s acorn? Can the doll keep a secret? We worry about Big Brother watching over us, but a tiny doll? Kids who have used Hello Barbie might decide to play with a “living, breathing” child down the block anyway. Voice recognition systems still have a long way to go since children have unique voices, speech patterns and modes. One little girl, after waiting several minutes for Hello

mate. He fills a void. Back to Melanie. She has super model looks, but is smart as a whip. I can discuss global warming or world politics without a mere blush. She loves WW II history, especially the desert warfare and tactics by German General Rommel. She can ace me in tennis (a somewhat bionic woman) and run 13 miles without breaking a sweat. She is equally good at checkers or chess and can recite poetry to me at sunset. She looks, feels and kisses like a real woman. However, she can’t leave me, and there is no drama. She has no Facebook account, and could care less if you “like” or “dislike” her. She is “programmable” with a few apps that plug into a board at the base of her neck. I can choose “in public,” “one on one,” “family and friends,” and even “act her age.” All of this for $70,000 plus tax. A screaming deal. If I bought a sports car, it would depreciate the minute I drive it off the lot. Melanie? Many happy returns, and not just in tennis! She came fully equipped, with all the bells and whistles. Pros: Doesn’t eat, doesn’t smoke or drink, low maintenance, incredibly sexy with great smile and figurine, super companion, gets along with society if the app is set properly, can be the life of any party at any time at any place, makes you feel like a million bucks even if you have only $500 in the bank. Non argumentative or confrontational. Cons: Owner’s manual as thick as a Bible,

when charging system runs low you’ll know it, cannot legally drive a vehicle, people won’t believe she isn’t a real human, can get balky at crowded events or gatherings, cannot reproduce, almost too human to a fault, blows fuses in cold weather. My parents despised this “living doll” when they first met Melanie. They considered me a loser for taking up space with a female robot. They felt she was nothing more than a counterfeit human born from a laboratory circuit board. But Melanie shed tears like a real human when she heard the cruel remarks. And the complaints have been kept to a murmur lately; she gives my father neck rubs while he watches a favorite movie. She helps my mother clean the kitchen and house better than any maid could. She babysat my nephew and niece with no distraction or vice. She window shopped with my sister in law, and wrote beautiful “thank you” cards to all relatives she has come in contact with. So why do I need a toy, a faux companion, that talks? Probably for the same reason you need to have 750 channel cable capacity and beer and wings on a Saturday night. And, lately I don’t like talking to myself, so a robot might as well hear me out instead of the walls. Do I love Melanie? Let me lay it on the line. With all the other “real” human train wrecks and dumpster fires I’ve encountered over five decades on this planet, I’m willing to take a chance and count the ways.

s you look to the new year with plans for healthier habits, there’s no better place to start than the beginning – the beginning of each day, that is. Countless studies have shown the benefits of a nutritious breakfast as part of a healthy eating plan, and there are plenty of options to make a good-for-you breakfast that tastes great, too. Experts agree that there are numerous health benefits to breakfast. For example, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics credits breakfast with helping brain function and memory as well as preventing tiredness and overeating as the day wears on. Mayo Clinic staff adds that adults who eat breakfast are likely to consume more vitamins and minerals, and less fats and cholesterol. Wake up your morning routine with these tips for a healthier start to each day: Plan a well-rounded meal. Incorporate whole grains, like sorghum, lean protein, low-fat dairy and fruits and vegetables, for a nutrient-rich meal that will keep you fueled and feeling full until lunchtime. Experiment with new flavors. Avoid burnout and boredom by trying new foods. For example, substitute your typical grain with sorghum, an American-grown cereal grain. In addition to its delicious flavor, sorghum is a highly versatile ingredient that is naturally high in fiber, iron and protein and can be used in a wide range of preparations. Eliminate obstacles. If hectic mornings are preventing you from getting a healthy breakfast, find solutions that work for you and your family. Prepare make-ahead foods that you can heat in minutes or look for options that are easy to eat on the go, such as this Triple

2001 Crosscutter Standout Chris Duffy Returns For Baseball Banquet By Lou Hunsinger Jr.

T

he 2001 Williamsport Crosscutters were Williamsport’s all-time winningest short season team with 48 wins. They were declared co-champions of the New York-Penn League because that year’s playoffs were suspended due to the tragedy of 9-11. This team was honored at the recent Hot Stove League Banquet

by being inducted as a team into the Bowman Field Hall of Fame. One of the standout members of that team, Chris Duffy, was on hand for the induction ceremony. Duffy played an outstanding centerfield for that team and was an offensive spark plug at the top of the line-up as the leadoff hitter. In 64 games he batted .317, had 24 RBIs and stole 30 bases and scored 50 runs. He also made that year’s New York-Penn

and future American League slugger, Jose Bautista, as well as Chris Shelton and Jorge Cortes. Duffy said he had an interesting batting philosophy while playing here. He said he would usually take the first two pitches to try and figure out what the pitcher was throwing and he said that as a leadoff hitter it was not unusual for him to take a lot of pitches. That would change the next year when he played at Lynchburg, interestingly enough his skipper there was Pete Mackanin, the current Phillies manager. “I was having some problems hitting at the beginning of that season and Pete asked me, ‘do hit better with one or two strikes on you,’ I think that was his way of getting me to me to be more aggressive at the plate and not to take so many pitches,” Duffy said. “I really enjoyed having Pete as a manager and I am glad to see him managing the Phillies now.” During his summer in Williamsport Duffy lived at the Genetti Hotel and would take the bus up to Bowman Field each day before the ball games. “I really enjoyed my year here in Williamsport. I was able to make a lot of friends here,” Duffy said. “I still keep in touch with a couple of my

League All-Star Team. He went on to play for the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Milwaukee Brewers. Webb Weekly talked with Duffy before the banquet about that team and other related matters. “That was a great team to be a part of. We had a lot of really good players on that team. We really seemed to click as a team. We were a very tight-knit group. Eight of us, including me, would go on to play in the major leagues,” Duffy told Webb Weekly. “Our manager, Tony Beasley really set the tone for us. He was really great to play for. He treated us with a lot of respect and treated us like men. He let us play aggressively and encouraged us to always try for the extra base.” Duffy said the Crosscutters’ pitching staff also played an important role in the success of the team. “We had a real fine pitching staff that pitched us deep into games and kept us in the games well, always putting us in a position to win,” Duffy said. “There were guys like Ian Snell, Juan Rodriquez, Carlos De Los Santos, Roberto Novoa and we had a great reliever in Jeff Miller, who had 15 saves.” He said they had a good hitting team that included the hulking “Junior” Young, who led the team in homers

teammates such as Jose Bautista, who is a star with the Toronto Blue Jays, Jon Searles, Avellino Asprilla, and Walter Young, before he died. “Junior” was a great guy and we lost him too soon.” Duffy remembers that year’s postseason playoffs, not because they were exciting, though they were, but because of the tragic events that ended them. “We won the first round of the playoffs against Jamestown and had played our first game of the finals against Brooklyn here at Bowman Field,” Duffy said. “Even though we lost that

first game we were looking forward to going to Brooklyn and beating them there. That morning, September 11, Jose and a couple of us who were staying with the Billmans, were awakened by a phone call from Mr. Billman telling us to turn on the TV and that’s when we found out what had happened. Of course the rest of the series was called off as it should have been and we were declared co-champions. Play-offs were cancelled throughout the minor leagues and that later set the stage for the great Diamonbacks-Yankees World

You will be able to use your favorite techniques to help minimize your stress as much as possible. Identifying and minimizing is key because the long-term effects of stress can be associated with a number of health problems, too. For example, heart disease, depression, anxiety, obesity, digestive problems, and headaches can be associated with the long-term effects of either positive or negative stress. Stress can also affect the immune system, which is why you seem to always get sick when you are feeling stressed. For these reasons, it is so important for you to find a method that works for you and to use it in times you are feeling stressed.

What we must be cautious of, though, is that both negative and positive stress can be harmful to the body. Therefore, it is essential that you find different ways to cope with your stress. Here a few techniques to try the next time you are feeling stressed: • Take deep breaths • Do some sort of exercise, whether it is taking a walk or doing yoga • Meditate, and try to calm yourself down • Take a nap: proper sleep can help eliminate stress • Utilize imagery • Enjoy your favorite leisure activity such as walking or golf • Relax: try reading a book or watch some television However, for you to be able to fix your stress levels, it is important for you to know where it is coming from. The Roving Sportsman The Latest From the PGC By Jon Pries

W

hile winter weather seems to finally be settling in here in north central Pennsylvania, and most residents are staying inside to avoid the chilly temperatures, there is still a buzzing of activity at the Pennsylvania Game Commission. There are a variety INCLUDED of programs that the PGC offers that FORshould A YEAR appeal to many of our northern-tier sportsmen. The National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) was first introduced in Kentucky in 2002 as an attempt to encourage students to work harder and improve their academic results. In order to remain in the program, students were required to maintain a higher minimum level in their academic grades. Participation in the archery program grew rapidly and grades improved as a result. The program was a success and not only spread across the state, but was adopted in a growing number of other states as well. The NASP came to Pennsylvania in 2005 and through the efforts of the PGC has now expanded to 210 schools. Not only has the participation grown throughout

the state at these various schools, but since its inception in 2011, an annual State Tournament has been held, which is also increasing in participation from the schools enrolled in the program. The upcoming State Tournament, to be held on March 11 in State College is shaping up to be the biggest student archery tournament ever held in Pennsylvania! Registration for this competition will open on Monday, February 1 and remain open until Friday, February 19th. The tournament will be held at the Penn State Multi-Sport Facility and it is expected to draw more than 1,100 participants from more than 45 schools across Pennsylvania. It should be quite a sight, with 95 lanes open for shooting, each with 2 archers, and all operating simultaneously – meaning 9,000 arrows will fly each hour and approximately 46,000 arrows will be launched that day! Additionally, this year more than $5,000 in scholarships will be handed out to the top performing shooters to aid them in college expenses. Teams are encouraged to register early as space will be limited. NASP aids Pennsylvania school districts meet physical-educational curriculum requirements and introduces students

work this spring? If so, we have a great source of inexpensive seedlings available right here in Pennsylvania. For years now, the Howard Nursery, operated by the PGC outside of Howard, PA, has been offering bundles of tree and shrub seedlings at very reasonable prices. This year, two dozen different coniferous and fruit and nut-bearing deciduous tree and shrub seedlings are available. Some of these varieties will sell out quickly, so please note that the last day to submit your order is Friday, April 22nd. Seedling species are sold in bundles of 25. To place an order, you may call the Howard Nursery at (814) 355-4434 on Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. An order form, listing all varieties available, is available on line at www.pgc.state.pa.us. Click on “General Store,” scroll down to “Howard Nursery,’ then click on “2016 Seedling Order Form.” Finally, the PGC Board of Directors has scheduled their first quarterly meeting for Sunday, January 31 to Tuesday, February 2 – to be held at the PGC Headquarters building at 2001 Elmerton Avenue, Harrisburg, PA. They will be discussing and taking public comment on the 20162017 hunting and furtaker seasons and bag limits. to the world of competitive archery. Tournaments are held at state, national and international levels. Last year more than 100 students from Pennsylvania attended the national tournament held in Louisville, Kentucky. If you are interested in starting a NASP in your school, contact Todd Holmes, at the PGC headquarters, at (717) 787-4250, ext. 3330. There is also information available on Facebook at the page entitled “PA NASP.” For those who are upland bird hunters or who want to help restore pheasants to our Pennsylvania landscape, the PGC is once again offering their “Day Old Pheasant Hen Chick & Surplus Egg Program.” These day-old chicks (available freeof-charge) are offered to sportsmen’s organizations, 4-H clubs, farmers and other cooperators for raising and releasing into areas open to public hunting. The PGC offers enrolled organizations technical assistance at the club’s facility and a training session and overview of the game farm operations can be scheduled during the off-season, from January through March. For further information regarding the program and applications, which must be completed and received by the PGC by Thursday, March 31st, go to the agency’s website (www.pgc.state. pa.us). Blessing still preferred the original olive chenille body with black marabou tail and black palmered hackle, tied on size 6, 8, or 10 streamer hooks. As with so many productive flies that are specific designs, countless variations surface. I have found a black marabou tail, peacock herl body, and dun-dyed grizzly hackle version quite effective for trout. For clear water conditions try your luck with one tied with a white marabou tail, yellow chenille body, and a bleached grizzly hackle. Flash material can be tied in with the tail as an added attractant. The Woolly Bugger is a universal fly, productive for just about any fish that swims in both fresh and saltwater. This is one fly you don’t want to leave home without. It’s a real Blessing!

Tom Finkbiner of the Slate Run Tackle Shop, Doug Swisher-fishing author, Barry Beck- fishing author/ photographer, and me for helping to promote the Woolly Bugger through its infancy. Barry Beck really put the “Bugger” on the map when he wrote an article about the fly in the May 1984 Fly Fisherman Magazine. He let the whole world know what we had been experiencing for over 15 years – the Woolly Bugger is one heck of a fly. The original Woolly Bugger was tied without weight, which, if needed, was added to the leader. Tiers construct weighted versions to aid in sinking the fly by using lead wire wrapped around the hook shank, lead or metallic eyes, a bead head or a cone head. By front-weighting the fly, a seductive jigging action can be induced during the retrieve. The Woolly Bugger can be tied in a wide range of colors and sizes, but

Question of the Week

HOW CAN I STOP THE PART D PENALTY I AM GETTING FOR NOT HAVING A DRUG PLAN WHEN I WAS FIRST ELIGIBLE? The answer is you cannot stop the penalty. Congress passed the law in 2003 to be implemented in January 2006, and the penalty will be imposed as long as you maintain a drug plan. The penalty is determined by Medicare, not the specific company you are enrolled with. Some with PACE/PACENET, or those getting low income subsidy or Medicaid may not always pay the penalty.

more arrival and departures are yet to come. Defensive coordinator Bob Shoop left for Tennessee, his 11th different coaching stop and Offensive Line Coach Herb Hand departed for Auburn. Former NFL head coach Jim Haslett, while not an official Penn State coach, left to join the Cincinnati Bengals as the team’s linebackers coach. PSU headman James Franklin brought Haslett on board as a consultant last June. These coaching changes followed the previously announced firing of offensive coordinator John Donovan, who was replaced in that role by Joe Moorhead, former Fordham head coach. Two years ago Franklin brought a collection of coaches, quite familiar with moving vans, to Penn State. At that time his staff had made stops at 61 different schools before Penn State. Times change indeed, but by comparison Joe Paterno’s last staff in 2011 featured assistant who had coached for a combined 301 years at a total of 17 different schools, including Penn State. When asked about all the changes, Penn State athletic director Sandy Barbour said, “I do believe that stability in a coaching staff obviously is desirable and one of the many factors in long-term, sustainable success. It’s just harder to achieve nowadays.” However, it is good for the game-day program sellers. The players aren’t the only ones you’ll need a program to identify these days.

Clemson. While the Tide rolled home to Tuscaloosa for a Tuesday celebration, Smart headed to Athens, Georgia to officially meet with his new team for the first time. Alabama’s latest college accomplishment may further strengthen Smart’s status in Georgia. Georgia hasn’t won a national championship since 1980, but it is now being led by a coach who helped win four such titles on Saban’s Alabama staff. “I can’t explain how well I slept last night,” Smart told the gathering in Georgia. “Number one that we won the national championship at the University of Alabama and to finish that the right way was a relief. Then to meet with this team, the University of Georgia team, my team, it’s a great relief. Being a head coach is what I’ve always wanted to do.” Championship teams at all levels of sport create opportunities for those individuals who helped achieve that wonderful success. Coveting crowns is something all competing teams have at the top of their ‘to do list’. Coaches come and coaches go, but what the heck is going on in the land of the Nittany Lions. Coaching changes have been taking place at a pace not seen before. Since Penn State’s 24-17 loss, to ironically Georgia, in the Tax Slayer Bowl the State College city limits signs have seen several folks leaving town. Headed by quarterback Christian Hackenberg eight players with eligibility have bid adieu, along with two coaches and a valued advisor. Most likely

for a Cardinals touchdown and win. Just like that, the game was over. It was a very unsatisfying ending to a great game. The Cardinals advanced to the NFC Championship without the Packers even having a chance in overtime. Aaron Rodgers, one of the most dangerous Quarterbacks of this era didn’t even get a chance to bring his team down the field like he has done so many times before. So here we are today with that lingering question whether or not NFL overtime rules should be changed or left the same. Like I’ve done in the past, I will break this down into a pros and cons discussion. Keeping the rule the same – I think that I am in the minority, but I actually don’t mind the NFL overtime rule. Look, nothing is going to be perfect. No matter what decision is made, someone will have a problem with it. The league has put a major emphasis on safety and one

both teams have an equal opportunity to score in overtime. Why not? There is already a large investment by both teams playing. What’s a few more minutes to get it right? Maybe keep it the same in the regular season, but in the postseason, play it out with each team getting an equal ability to score. This explanation obviously isn’t as long as the opinion to keep the rule the same. It doesn’t have to be. The only issue is that the game could go on for too long. Let me reiterate once more, there is no perfect answer. Anything that is decided will be an issue to someone. I am for keeping the rule the same. The coin flip sometimes decides the outcome of the game, but my answer to that is simple. Don’t let the other team score. Boom! Player of the Week This week’s Webb Weekly Players of the Week are every player on the Loyalsock and Mount Carmel girls basketball teams. On Tuesday, January 19th at Loyalsock’s gymnasium, members of both teams wore Callie’s Crew T-shirts in support of Callie Cavanaugh, a first grader in the Loyalsock School District courageously battling cancer, Callie and her family were honored at halftime of the JV game. She has captured the hearts of so many, both near and far. This was an incredible display of support by both teams. Hats off to you ladies, this game will be remembered for years to come for so many reasons other than the game itself. “No one fights alone” #CallieStrong

here has been much debate concerning the overtime rules of NFL football. Last week’s game between the Arizona Cardinals and Green Bay Packers helped bring that discussion back to the forefront of media and water cooler debate forums. As it stands now, the NFL overtime rules say that if a team scores a touchdown first, they win the game. If the team that got the ball first kicks a field goal, the other team has a chance to either kick their own field goal to tie and continue, or score a touchdown to win the game. This situation recently played out again. After an incredibly hard fought game, the Arizona Cardinals won the coin flip and chose to get the ball first. Almost right away, Carson Palmer connected with Larry Fitzgerald for a 75 yard catch down to the 5 yard line. The very next play, Fitzgerald received a shovel pass

thing this rule does is give the ability to finish the game in a timely fashion. Football is a brutally physical sport. A regulation game in the NFL last 60 minutes. From a safety stance, the last thing the NFL and teams want is for a Zac game to take longer than Baggett that. Before you start getting worked up over the “sissification” of football, the fact remains that this is a very real concern. It is what it is and we have to accept that. A lot of people will also point to the college football overtime rules as a guiding light, but I couldn’t disagree more. I despise the college football overtime rule. In college overtime, both teams get a chance to start at the opponent’s 25 yard line. They can either score a touchdown or kick a field goal. But, the other team gets a chance to match or beat the opponent’s outcome. Sure this seems more “fair”, but my problem with it is that it takes away so many key elements of football. No Kickoffs, No punting, no long drives, no real reward for a good defense. The defense forces a 3 and out and the other team still gets to kick a field goal? It turns into a field goal kicking contest. Lame. Like I said, nothing is going to be perfect, but I don’t mind the current NFL overtime rule. Change the rule – Short and sweet. Let
