A Fine Kettle of Caring
W
hat is the number one question I have been asked the past several days? No, it’s not how many days are left in Mr. Obama’s reign of excellence. It’s a simple, how many bucks did we raise in the Red Kettle Remembrance of Dave? Well let me keep you in suspense for a little while. Dave Sechler was a great man who gave himself for a lifetime of work for the Salvation Army and his community. He was dedicated and committed in whatever he did. So many of you told me your Christmas season began when you saw Dave holding his post, ringing the bell. Sech is looking down smiling at all of you that continue his work and answered that Red Kettle calling. I can see his smile and hear his voice saying thank you for helping the Salvation Army. Tip of the cap to all of you that made this year’s Red Kettle Remembrance of Dave a heartfelt, caring, huge success! I am appreciative that not only do you think so much of Sech but support a wonderful organization that takes care of so many of our neighbors and helps our local communities. I am proud you put your money where your mind and heart is! It was like being a kid on Christmas morning when Majors Donald and Paula Spencer, and yes they are husband and wife, and my good friend Tony Perrotta
came over to the Webb Weekly. They along with my staff and I couldn’t wait to total the contents of our Red Kettle along with the other donations you folks made directly to the Sal or dropped in Red Kettles while Jim you were Christmas Webb, Jr. shopping earmarked Remembering Dave. So how much? We all thank you for your donations totaling $6405.60! My staff and I are honored to match your contributions with another $6405.60. Quick math, a cool $12,811.20 to help the Salvation Army with their efforts! Now you know why Sech is smiling and we will see you again next year, mark it on your calendar. Great job folks! What’s Up in Harrisburg? Well not a budget for the Keystone State as I’m penning this. Governor Wolf in sheep’s clothing is doing his best Obama impersonation; it is his way or his way. Our local representatives Mr. Garth Everett, Mr. Jeff Wheeland and Senator Gene Yaw have done a fine job standing up for you and I and our wallets. The Wolfman does say he will free up some emergency
funding for those who need it. Why could he have not done this a month ago? Folks it’s all about the money, Governor Wolf in sheep’s clothing wants it. Doesn’t matter if it’s the private sector or business. More tax, more regulation, more robbing from the working and giving to those working the system. Our State has been blessed over the past few years with the infusion of revenue from the Marcellus Shale industry. With the bottom falling out on oil prices, increased pressure has been levied against all states to work with the gas folks. Not our Governor. Forget about that billion dollar industry and energy independence. Governor Wolf in sheep’s clothing had already began closing down our cash pipeline before this hit the full spin cycle. He and his policies will make it hard to find replacements for the gas industry’s tax revenue. He will naturally expect that you and I will cough up the money for his liberal budget. Message to Governor Wolf. Cut your budget, cut your staffing, cut your underhanded using of education, the elderly and puppies without a home to justify your agenda. The over abundance of government is a vicious cycle! The creation of those who are dependant is almost impossible to reverse. The Governor just doesn’t get the fact he works for us. It is alarming more and more Pennsylvanians are getting caught up in that dependent trap. Supporting decision-making because they
New Year’s
DEALS!!
gain benefits on the backs of their fellow citizens. Voting for the ridiculous because it directly benefits the individual. What happens when all of us paying the bills that support our government can’t take care of our own families and save for our retirements and elder care? What happens when the independent, lawabiding taxpayer can’t afford groceries, a college education for their children or even owning their own home because they have paid for people sucking off the system since they began their adult work life, this includes the lifetime politicians and their entourages?!?! I would love to ask Mr. Wolf these questions. I would love to ask Mr. Obama these questions. I would like to look every bleeding heart liberal in the eye and inform them we all quit and now you are going to pay for us! Two problems with that. 1. You and I would never quit on our Country. 2. The liberal liars would never help you and I. God Bless America.

ow! I can’t believe we are on our first issue of 2016! This is the 14th year of Webb Weekly! So do you have your list of resolutions ready to go? What are your plans for the New Year? I decided to take a look at last year’s list of resolutions and see how I made out. So here is the list from last year… – I will finish a Chap-Stik. Nope, not a chance, I have, however, increased my collection significantly. – I will check my breathing more than my Facebook notifications. Ehhhh well, yeah nope. – I will spend less than one hour a day on the Internet. This, of course, will be hard to estimate since I don’t own a watch. Ok, well I’m closer on this one for sure, but still not quite there. – I will start buying lottery tickets at a luckier store. I tried, I really, really did. I just haven’t found that lucky store yet. – I will try to drive closer to the speed limit. This one…well… – I will stop drinking orange juice after I brush my teeth. Ha! Here is one that I actually accomplished! Go Steph! – I will watch more cute and cuddly kitten videos on YouTube. Yep, totally nailed this one too. – I will save some money for a rainy day. That way I can shop online instead of having to go to an actual store. See these resolutions weren’t so hard – I totally spent rainy days cuddled up with Amazon!
– I will keep better records throughout the year. That way I can listen to better music while I’m figuring my taxes. And I was doing so well… – I will lower my bills Steph Nordstrom by digging a hole to put them in. I tried, but Erik yelled at me for digging holes in the yard. – I will not bore my boss by with the same excuse for taking the day off. I will think of some new excuses. Well, you’d have to ask Jimmy, but I still don’t think he bought that story about needing the day off after rescuing kittens from a burning building. – Just for today, I will not sit in my living room all day in my pajamas. Instead, I will move my computer into the bedroom. Technically, I moved to the front porch, but we’ll call this one complete. – I will give up chocolates totally. 100%. Completely. Honestly.... I should really stop lying to you people. – I will think of a password other than “password.” I did this. Now all my passwords contain a letter, number, symbol, hieroglyph, and the blood of a first-born child. – I will get into the habit of writing 2015 instead of 2014 before April. What? I got there by May, close enough. – I will stop sending Facebook messages and emails to my loved ones when they are in the
same room as I am. Yeah…total fail on this one. – I will use my treadmill for something other than a place to hang my jacket. Ha! I don’t even have a treadmill, so I call this one as accomplished! – I will drive by a fitness center at least once a week. Done. – I will actually laugh out loud when I type “LOL” to the person I am messaging with. If you want me to accomplish this – be funnier. – I will not sit and stare at the computer screen all day – instead, I will make it a point to stand and stare at the screen for at least 30 minutes. Standing is hard. – I will work harder to find time to sleep more. Consider it done. – I will wear something other than sweat pants to the grocery store. I switched to yoga pants. – I will stop repeating myself again, and again, and again. I will stop repeating myself. – I will wear something other than sweat pants to the grocery store ... oops ... there I go again! I switched to yoga pants…shoot! – I will enjoy the sweeter side of life – M&Ms, Hershey kisses, candy corns, and cheesecake. I absolutely, 100% did this. Minus the candy corn – what was I thinking even putting that on the list?! – I will be more decisive ... I’ll absolutely try to attempt to think about resolving to be more decisive, if I possibly can. I absolutely think I maybe, might have accomplished this. – I promise to stick to these resolutions for more than a week. Well it took me until May to write 2015, does that count? – I will learn what the word “resolution” means. A firm decision to do or not to do something. See, I can do this resolution thing

ackson Fulmer loves eating good food and he has used that love of good food to something good for his school, the Mountain View Christian School. He entered the Uncle Ben’s Rice “Ben’s Beginner’s Cooking Contest and became one of five national grand prize winners in the contest. His school cafeteria was given a $30,000 makeover and he was given a $15,000 cash prize. Jackson was one of 25 finalists selected from hundreds of entrants from Kindergarten through eighth grade. Entrants from across the U.S. submitted videos of themselves and their families preparing a rice-based dish and highlighting the fun and creative way they cook together. “We found out about the contest when we received a flyer with our weekly newsletter. In the flyer were included details on how to enter the contest, rules, and prize money,” April
Fulmer, Jackson’s mom, told Webb Weekly. We debated for a while before entering the contest and we almost didn’t do. I even stated throughout the process that we just don’t win things, so we shouldn’t get our hopes up. With the submission deadline ending shortly, Jeff, Jackson’s dad, while driving home one Friday afternoon from work, was inspired to enter the contest. He had an idea of the layout, shots and storyline. That Sunday the video was shot and submitted to Ben’s beginners. Jackson then had to gather votes supporting his recipe as part of the contest. According to his mom, the votes were solicited several ways. The video was shared by social media via the Bens Beginners site. Jackson had two local television news segments. A story about his contest that aired on WBRE and he was featured cooking his Haystack recipe on PA Live. Jackson was also featured in the Sun Gazette and had a radio interview with

My family from Maryland drove three hours to be at my school when it was announced,” Jackson said. “Everyone is so proud. I’ve always wanted to be an artist, but now I might want to be a chef. I entered the contest because we need some new equipment for our cafeteria since it is also our gymnasium. I love my school and my teachers and I wanted to be able to do something for everyone.” He said it was not hard work to come up with the recipe because it is a favorite recipe of his, they just added the rice to make it even better. According to Jackson it is not hard to prepare, “My mom cuts up most of the stuff and I get to grate the cheese and make up my own plate.” Here is Jackson’s winning recipe: Chopped up lettuce, tomatoes, peppers, olives, cucumbers, cooked beans (black, pinto, etc.), grated cheese of your choice, sour cream, tortilla chips, salsa and Uncle Ben’s Spanish Style Ready Rice. Layer it on your plate like this: Chips (smashed up a bit), beans, cheese, rice, lettuce and other veggies, top with salsa and sour cream. Congratulations to Jackson, and may he have many more winning recipes in his future!

WGRC. Many votes were solicited via Facebook. Family, friends and church family around the country shared the video. The family talked to people in the community as well, in the grocery store or at the bank, they talked to people about it and asked for their votes. She said local folks have been so supportive. “We are so thrilled. This is a wonderful boost for his school and it means that we can add a nice sum to his college fund,” Jackson’s mom April, said. “It is also a great opportunity to show our kids that we can really accomplish great things when we put in the effort. Our family values mealtime. We place a lot of emphasis on that even though it doesn’t get to happen every night. Now we also try to involve the kids in helping to choose the meals and helping to prepare as much as they can. It means more time for us to talk and share about our day and more opportunities to show what we can accomplish together as a family. We are so grateful for the overwhelming support shown for our family and Jackson’s school. Jackson is also thrilled and pleased with his contest win. “Everyone has been so excited for me.

Safe Driving in the New Year By Lou Hunsinger Jr.
A
s winter tries to get its icy grip around us – it is good for us to respect what Old Man Winter can do to us as we drive hither and yon. This time of year produces major hazards such as ice and fog and it is important to remember the driving tips that can help and save us during this time. According to Deborah Erdman, Trauma Outreach/Injury Prevention
Coordinator at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, “We let our guard down and don’t think of hidden or forgotten dangers.” Fog on these cold mornings, especially if the temps go below 32 degrees can cause a moist coating on hard surfaces. Ice, better yet, black ice on road surfaces, so soon we forget. The most common form of fog, known as radiation fog, typically occurs on clear nights as the earth’s surface cools

MAKING PLANS FOR OURSELVES The emotion that accompanies the loss of a loved one is difficult enough to endure without being obligated to assume the responsibility of having to make important decisions regarding the funeral and final disposition of the body. To alleviate the stress that funeral planning and burial/cremation decisions can place on others, we should all have a plan in place that outlines our funeral wishes. Doing so allows our families to better focus on grieving and recovery. In funeral planning, it is best to start with the last step and work backwards. The choice of final resting place will influence how a body is prepared, what products or services are required, and how much final arrangements will cost. Ceremony planning follows. When planning ahead, deciding whether you will be buried or if cremation is preferable will help you to determine how to proceed. Our caring staff at KNIGHT-CONFER FUNERAL HOME is here to present you with a wide variety of options to help you make those decisions. Reach us today at 570-323-7717. We will arrange an initial consultation. We have been serving our community with pride since 1879. You are invited to tour our tastefully appointed facility at 1914 Memorial Avenue. sunlight. Also remember bridges and over passes will freeze before road surfaces. “Don’t drive in bad weather unless absolutely necessary,” suggested Erdman. “Whatever it is can probably wait.” Safe Driving Tips • Check the weather report before heading out • Wear your seat belt, everyone every time • Step off the accelerator if you hit ice • Do not hit the brakes –it’s instinct – stay calm • Turn into the skid. If the rear of the car goes left, gently turn the steering wheel left • Avoid tailgating. Give yourself plenty of room in case the car in front of you brakes suddenly • “Slow down” advises Erdman. “Speed kills.” • Just because the speed limit is 55 mph does not mean it is safe to drive 55 mph. Speeding is not only exceeding the speed limit, it is also driving too fast for conditions. So if we’ve no place to go let it snow, let it snow, let it snow. Be safe.

moist air immediately above it. Cold air is pooled at the surface helping to create the fog, while warmer air sits above. With a little air movement such as a light wind the fog can become thick and well above ground surface. In our area, North Central Pennsylvania, often in the fall and early winter, you’ll see morning fog hug lower valleys of surrounding hills and close to the river. This valley fog is just a type of radiation fog, resulting from cold, dense air draining down mountain slopes at night, collecting in the valley floors, and then forming as radiation fog as previously described. The danger that can occur, other than low visibility on these colder mornings, is black ice. Black ice forms when the air and hard surfaces are least 32 degrees, along with rainy and or foggy conditions. Black ice gets its name from being able to blend in with the surrounding pavement. Prime time for this particular icy situation is around dawn and late evening when temperatures are generally lowest. The most common locations for black ice are shaded or tree covered parts of driveways and roadways that lack

y parents aspired for us to have two fundamentally sound things in life. A quality education and our own home. Now it appears both are mutually exclusive. It stumps me that people in their late 20’s and early 30’s don’t crave to own their own home anymore. They’d rather rent and be done with it, and get to know a landlord on a first name basis. Sure, I know times are tough. After the last housing bust and subsequent deep recession, most of us were required to have a 20% down payment and a credit score hovering near the 800 mark. So what? Wasn’t moving into your own place a thing to be proud of? A domain to call your very own. A spot that historically would increase in value over time to build you some strong equity. A homestead where you could paint the hallways duck feet orange and the bathroom panther pink if your heart desires. Things have changed. You are what you rent. People are more mobile these days and don’t want to be tied down to one spot and one mortgage. This current generation’s flight path may take them from city to city

before they finally build a nest to rest. Thus, having a mortgage payment attached to 2800 square feet isn’t exactly nirvana to them. Actually, probably more like a ball and chain around their ankles! Add in the property taxes, the school taxes, the snow removal, the sewer rates and water bills, plus upkeep on property that Gerry Ayers home ownership entails and you have a growing part of the population that wants nothing to do with it. Some people are seeking “ready made” gated communities with rental properties that provide a comfy setting with lawn mowing service, pools, and all upkeep. All you do is show up and live there, and supply the monthly rental check! After WW II, the housing boom took place and the government worked with lenders to provide housing options for GI’s who were returning home and needed space for newlyweds and upcoming children, plus perhaps a new car in the garage and a porch out back. Again, a bygone era. Nobody in their late 20’s talks about porches or garage space. It’s all about landing a decent job and getting a new iPhone.

for a injury from a fall. Robin advised the woman that she needed to consider a nursing home for her mother. The woman disregarded the counsel, but not many days later the reality slowly set in that she was not going to be able to take care of her mother indefinitely. She then began to apply to different agencies for assistance, and after three weeks of runarounds, she was overwhelmed. Finally, in desperation, she talked to her family practice doctor, who told her, “If anyone can help you, it is Robin Fink.” The woman remembered Robin from
the visit to the ER, and gave her a call. Robin did what she does best, and a short time later, the mother was placed in a very nice nursing home in the area. The woman left a message on Robin’s phone, praising her efforts, and telling her “I can’t thank you enough.” People like Robin Fink never get thanked enough. Those who are hurting need all kinds of help, and Robin Fink is one of those who can show them the way. Larry Stout appreciates comments and feedback and can be reached at lionwebbweekly@gmail.com.

Numerous Falls, Accidents Reported Last Evening as Ice Sheaths This District Compiled by Lou Hunsinger Jr.

angerous walking and driving conditions were the result of the rain and sleet storm that settled over the city yesterday. This too continued to freeze upon hitting the ground. Automobile traffic was strictly limited last night in the downtown area and those who did venture to ride did so at a restricted speed. Pedestrians were struggling and with many of them indicating a love for “a quiet evening at home.” Overshoes and well- treaded tires proved ineffective against the glaze caused by the storm. Some pedestrians were brave enough to walk normally, others tried running a few steps and sliding, but the majority were content to step cautiously and try to strike upon
the less slippery spots. Automobile drivers had but one choice, drive slowly and not apply the brakes suddenly. While the walks in the downtown district were slippery they were not as nearly bad as those in the residential districts. Miss Pam Leonard of the “Dimpled Darlings” burlesque show. Slipped and fell on the metal grating in front of Williamsport Auto Parts store room and received a fractured left leg at the knee. She was treated and returned to her hotel before leaving on train for Baltimore, her home, at the same time as the rest of the show last night. James Moorehead, age 6, 811 Elmira Street, ran into an automobile while coasting on Elmira Street between High Street and Park Avenue. He was taken to the emergency room and treated for cuts and bruises.

arents, do you know the difference between a teen’s drinking behavior and an adults? • Adults generally drink as part of the occasion. Teens drink to get drunk. With teens, drinking is the occasion. • It takes less alcohol to
impair a teen. • Teens tend to binge drink – consuming large amounts of alcohol in a short time. • Binge drinking can lead to alcohol poisoning, which occurs when so much alcohol is consumed that the body shuts down. It can be fatal. • Some statistics show that more teens die of alcohol

ama says it’s chilly outside and you need to cover up. You can’t let the cold nip your nose or your toes, so she
bundles you up warm with boots and coat, maybe a scarf and mittens, too. As you’ll see in the book, “Happy in Our Skin” by Fran Manushkin, illustrated by Lauren Tobia, Mama – and something else – will keep you toasty, inside and out. Right after a baby is born, someone wraps it tight in a blanket or a sweater to keep it warm. But did you know a baby – every baby, even you – is already born with a warm suit? It’s their birthday suit, made of skin. Skin comes in all kinds of colors:

seal” in the form of a scab that keeps blood in and germs out. Think about that the next time you skin your knee or bump your elbow when you’re playing. What else does skin do? It makes you warm and snuggly when Mom or Dad hugs you. It makes you laugh when they tickle your belly. Your skin feels good when someone scratches your back, holds your hand, or plays “This Little Piggy” on your toes. Yes, you have clothes for your body, hands, and your feet, but your skin is your first protection. And the best part of all? Nobody
has skin exactly like yours! You are unique, and so is your skin. For much of your toddler’s life, you’ve been playing Where’s Your NoseChin-Elbow so your child can learn the names of his body parts. Now, with “Happy in Our Skin,” you can add a new twist to an old game in a truly sweet way. Starting with snuggly babies and using a simple rhyme, author Fran Manushkin tells the story of skin: what it does, why we have it, and why one person’s skin is one color and your child’s skin might be another. Manushkin doesn’t
highlight differences; instead, she treats them quite matter-of-factly and like no big deal. That sentiment’s underscored with illustrations by Lauren Tobia: on page after page, your child will see drawings of kids of all races playing together, and their mothers caring for them. The audience for this book is narrow: babies are a little too young for it, and 5-year-olds may be too old. The sweet spot, I think, is for 2-to-4-yearolds who are just starting to notice differences. For them, “Happy in Our Skin” covers just what they need.

ith nighttime temperatures beginning to hover below the freezing mark, giving us the feeling that winter is finally upon us, there are still a few options for those who want to spend time in the woods. If you are still hoping to put more venison in the freezer, the statewide flintlock season for antlered and antlerless deer remains open until Saturday, January 9th. With just a very few days left, it might be best to concentrate your efforts in the areas that will provide the highest level of good feed. After weeks of rut activity and increased pressure from hunting, both bucks and does will be focused on putting on a few more pounds to help get through the remaining winter months. Any leftover standing corn fields or stands of white oaks will yield high-protein feed and will be prime locations to find feeding deer. Otherwise, with few hunters in the woods this late in the season, small drives by a few hunters in bedding areas or woodlots near feeding areas might produce good results. Upland bird hunters can still pursue ruffed grouse until January 23 throughout the state. The season for squirrel, pheasant and cottontail rabbits will continue until February 29. If the latest trend of warmer than normal temperatures continues, there should be plenty of pleasant weather days to run your beagles or your favorite bird dogs.
With some standing corn still in food plots on nearby area State Game Lands, concentrate your bird hunting on adjacent heavy cover to locate remaining pheasants. Daytime cover areas for rabbits should produce well also. Squirrel hunters would do well to work the edges of standing or picked corn fields, or spend time in wooded areas that are heavy with red and white oak trees. But for many hunters who have been looking forward to this time of year, their passion is pursuing predators. Raccoons and foxes can be hunted until February 20; with no limit to the number you can take. The season for hunting bobcats runs from January 16 through February 9, with a limit of one and a special permit required. Coyotes, the object of most of the predator hunting, have no closed season this time of year and there is no limit to numbers taken. This is the best time for hunters to help make a difference in the predator populations. Throughout the spring and summer we tend to be focused on other outside activities, and in the fall there are all of the various seasons for the different small and big game we pursue. Now, with few seasons open, and predators eagerly seeking food, they tend to be more vulnerable than normal. Some area hunters will use hounds to hunt the various predators, and there is something unique and memorable to a hunter when he has the opportunity to hear the baying of the hounds

There are dozens of sounds from rabbits to rodents to mating sounds to help lure in whatever you might be pursuing. as they pursue their quarry. It is especially rewarding when the hounds have located and held at bay a bobcat. Success can also be had this time of year by hiking old logging roads in forested areas, watching for coyote tracks on the roadway, or bobcat tracks on top of downed logs. Stopping to glass ahead of your travel route from time to time might allow you to spot a predator before he sees you. Perhaps, by far, the most successful method of hunting the various predators is by calling. OUR APOLOGY TO EVERYONE that we had to turn down regarding enrollment into OBAMACARE. No one was happy when 2 major insurance companies instructed us not to bring more enrollments. They stated they lost too much money on OBAMACARE, and DID NOT WANT INDEPENDENT BROKERS TO ENROLL ANY NEW PEOPLE AS NEW ENROLLMENTS WOULD CAUSE THEM TO LOSE EVEN MORE MONEY! This also limited our ability to help those of you whose plans cancelled. Walleye are often a targeted species with ice fishermen. The walleye’s unpredictable behavior can frustrate the most accomplished fisherman. Success comes from knowledge of the species, angler skills, and applying the necessary techniques. Locating and catching walleye gives anglers a great sense of pride when all the pieces of the puzzle fall into place. Walleye are schooling fish, so generally if you catch one, you’ll enjoy multiple hookups. Once hooked, a walleye gives a less than spirited performance when compared to other popular game fish species. You won’t find leaps or long, powerful runs. However, big walleye will wage a decent battle,

crowd although it was several years before I was able to connect with a fine doe that was about 60 yards from my stand. To be honest I enjoy that time of year hunting deer-usually a good amount of snow, cold but certainly not crowded and generally very quiet-at least until you hear the sound of a flintlock going off. My wife has also joined the ranks and is still looking for her first flintlock kill. In the meantime I hope to do some flintlock deer hunting in the days during and following the holidays; the only sound I don’t want to hear is the sound of the hammer striking the frizzen and not igniting the powder-ah, but I guess that’s part of flintlock deer hunting.

In the years that followed more opportunities were created and restrictions were relaxed for flintlock hunters; the black powder and lead ball gang had finally arrived and proved that their equipment and skills were worthy of the rest of the hunting fraternities respect. All of this interest in muzzleloading didn’t go unnoticed by the sporting goods manufacturers and soon muzzleloaders and an array of accompanying equipment hit the market at reasonably affordable prices. It was around this time that I finally saw the light and I joined the muzzleloader

playoffs. But their overwhelming picks for the NL Championship Series Nationals and Dodgers, both with 85 votes watched the World Series just like you and I – at home. The participants in same, the Royals (3) and the Mets (1) got just four votes to be there. A similar panel of CBS Sports thinkers fared a tad better crowning the Patriots in the AFC East and the Broncos in the West, but touted the Bengals and Chiefs as alsorans. Their NFC selections had the Packers winning the North but had the Redskins last in the East (in favor of the underachieving Cowboys) while showing some respect for the Panthers and Cardinals with second-place picks. It clearly shows there is a vast difference between prognostications and resolutions. The former we can’t control. The latter is all up to us. No doubt some of those resolutions made six days ago have already been broken, while others will demand solid self-control to achieve. If you are viewing sports from the sidelines, go ahead and make some predictions and have fun with them. But if you are a player, particularly those young folks wearing the colors of their high school teams, pay no attention to the predications of others. They only see things from the outside. They don’t know what is deep inside each and every one of you with a burning desire to achieve. Proving people wrong can be a whole lot more satisfying than picking something right.
