ocal businesses of all types from restaurants to small retailers have taken a tremendous economic hit as a result of the dislocations caused by the COVID-19 virus. In a bid to promote these area businesses and get local consumers to patronize these businesses, the Williamsport/ Lycoming Chamber of Commerce is engaging in a four-month contest aimed at helping these businesses. Beginning on November 23, and running through March 29, the Chamber will be having weekly drawings from submissions of people who have shopped here in Lycoming County. All people need to do is take a photo of their receipt of a purchase made at a local business that week and upload it to www.buylocalwinlocal.com/webb.

The Chamber is giving away $250 in gift certificates from local business between November 23 through December 28. There will be (1) $100 gift certificate and (3) $50 gift certificates given away during this period. From January 4 through March 29, the amount of money given away doubles with $500 in gift certificates being awarded. They will be giving away (2) $100 gift certificates and (6) $50 gift certificates during this span of months. This program is being underwritten through support of UPMC, Highmark,

Moff & Associates The Lycoming Economic Development Foundation In Memory of Joseph L. Rider Fund at the First Community Foundation Partnership of Pennsylvania. It is also being supported through the local media partners of Webb Weekly, Backyard Broadcasting, NorthcentralPA.com, and the Sun Gazette. There has been a significant increase of online shopping during the pandemic. Online retailers such as Amazon have seen record sales and profits. This has come at a cost to local brick and mortar stores not only here in our community but across the country. “We want to drive home the need for people here in Lycoming County to shop locally. Without the dollars being recirculated in our community, we will see more vacant buildings,” Jason Fink, President and CEO of the Williamsport/Lycoming Chamber of Commerce, told Webb Weekly. “This doesn’t only affect our employment, but also the tax base, which supports a host of public services. Shopping

locally can be done safely, and people need to get out and do it if they want a return to normal when the pandemic is over. You’ll notice that we’re putting an emphasis on purchases made in the first quarter of 2021. Historically, this has been the slowest time for retailers and restaurants. Now more than ever, we need to change this and make it busy for them. These local businesses have been here for us over the years in supporting all hosts of community efforts. Now it’s our turn to step up and help them. The Chamber greatly appreciates the support we received from the businesses and organizations that have helped to fund this program.” Again, all you have to do to enter to win is buy local. Every time you make a purchase at any business in Lycoming County, head to buylocalwinlocal. com/webb. Just fill out the form and upload a picture of your receipt and you are entered to win! You can also find a link on our website, www. webbweekly.com, just click the graphic on our homepage and it will take you directly to the entry form! Good luck and remember, Buy Local, Win Local.

Creative, Colorful Christmas Ideas for Kids

P

icking out the perfect presents for kids this holiday doesn’t limit your search to simply including gifts with screens or the hottest tech gadgets. Although the amount of options in store and on virtual shelves for kids can be somewhat overwhelming, gifts fostering imaginative play and creativity never go out of style. Even if it seems your children already have pretty much everything, getting back to the basics with crafty gifts like paint and art sets, color and wash collectibles, science kits or customizable DIY projects encourage children to express their creativity and explore their inner-artists. Consider these activities that can spark imagination and allow kids of all ages to create colorful memories this holiday season. Find more at Crayola.com. Custom Craft Creations Give the kids creative freedom with an option like Crayola’s Maker series, which allows them to create custom paper and markers for arts and crafts time at home or school projects. The Marker Maker comes with 16 makeable markers along with a color mixing guide and customizable labels for each one. The Paper Maker includes an instruction booklet, paper-making pulp

to make 20 sheets of 5-by-8-inch paper, a stir and smoothing tool and a pressure plate. Both kits make it fun and easy to craft DIY cards, decor, notes and other projects. Colorful Pets Kids can take imaginative, creative play to new places this holiday season with the Scribble Scrubbie Pets Grooming Truck. This life-like environment includes a grooming truck with moving wheels and features a real working spray pump and scrub tub that allow kids to wash and clean the two included pets just like real groomers do. The truck also doubles as an easy-to-pack storage solution for taking the customizable pets on-the-go for later use. After creating a colorful look for their pets using washable markers, kids can simply scrub them clean for a fresh blank canvas to create over and over. (Family Features)

How to Support Small Businesses This Holiday Season

T

he holiday season is an important one for small businesses every year, and it figures to take on heightened importance in 2020. The outbreak of the novel coronavirus COVID-19 in late 2019 and early 2020 hit small businesses especially hard, with many being forced to close their facilities to customers in an effort to prevent the virus from spreading. Estimates regarding the effects of the COVID-19 outbreak on small businesses varied, but many small business owners were forced to let go of employees as they confronted steep declines in revenue. A ZenBusiness survey of more than 1,000 small business founders, senior managers and decision makers found that 37 percent of small businesses that employ between 11 and 25 people were considering laying off more than one-fifth of their workforce. As small businesses face difficult challenges, it’s no surprise that many consumers want to support locally owned small businesses this holiday season. Such support not only can help small businesses, but also can help to revitalize local communities. • Shop online. Online shopping has traditionally been dominated by big box retailers. However, many small businesses increased their e-commerce capabilities to generate revenue. Shoppers concerned about shopping in person this holiday season should explore the delivery and curbside pickup options available at

locally owned small businesses. Even businesses that have not traditionally been allowed to deliver, such as breweries and wineries, have been able to do so during the outbreak, giving consumers unlimited online shopping options. • Purchase gift cards. Gift cards take the guesswork out of holiday shopping, and such cards are easily shipped or even emailed to loved ones. That’s a significant benefit during the 2020 holiday season, when delivery times are expected to be lengthy. Gift cards to local businesses simplify holiday shopping, support small businesses and help shoppers avoid potential delivery delays. • Share your experience. Word-of-mouth is vital to small businesses at any time, and can be especially valuable as these companies try to overcome the challenges posed by the COVID-19 outbreak. Holiday shoppers can share their experiences with local businesses via social media. Share information about the lengths local small businesses have gone to in regard to safety measures, order fulfillment and their delivery and pickup efforts. Such sharing may compel neighbors and friends to follow your lead and provide vital support to local businesses in need this holiday season. Small businesses are the backbone of many communities, and the holiday season provides a great opportunity to support such firms as they look to recover from a difficult year.

ecorations help make the holiday season a magical time of year. Stores are awash in color and twinkling lights, and similar imagery is on display in private homes. Designing holiday displays can be a great way for families to spend time together and kick off the celebration. In fact, according to Electrical Safety Foundation International, around 90 percent of Americans decorate their homes for the holidays. When trimming the tree and decorating this holiday season, families must keep safety in mind. A little planning and some precautionary measures can ensure displays are enjoyed all season long. Travelers Insurance offers the following holiday decorating safety tips. • Do not overload outlets. Plan displays according to the number and location of available outlets. • Never exceed the maximum number of light strands that can be attached together. • Use lights and products that have been tested for safety. Certification marks like UL, ETL and CSA are from nationally recognized laboratories. • LED lights should be used whenever possible. Such lights consume less energy and run cooler than other bulbs. • The ESFI says candles start almost 50 percent of all decoration fires. Minimize the risk by using candles only when they can be monitored. Artificial candles can be used in place of real candles. • Check for freshness in live trees. A fresh

tree will last longer and is less of a fire hazard than an old tree. • Place Christmas trees at least three feet away from all heat sources, including fireplaces and heaters. • Use decorations that are non-combustible or made from flame-resistant materials. • Pay attention to the age recommendations of decorations to see if they can be used in homes with young children. Some items, however common, are choking or strangulation hazards. • Avoid putting small, “mouth-sized” decorations near the ground or on lower limbs of trees, where young children can easily reach them. • Exercise caution when hanging decorations at high heights. Make sure the ladder is secured and have a spotter who can hold the ladder and pass items up safely. • Outdoor electric lights and decorations should be plugged into circuits protected by ground fault circuit interrupters, or GFCIs. • Exercise caution when decorating near power lines that extend to the house. • Keep hung stockings far away from open flames so they do not catch any errant embers. These are just a few suggestions for decorating a safely for the holiday season.

020 has been a year unlike any other. A global pandemic affected communities in every corner of the globe, and many people found they had much more time on their hands due to stay-at-home restrictions. That extra free time may have opened up the opportunity to re-engage with old hobbies or start entirely new ones. Such endeavors may have resulted in items that can make ideal handmade holiday gifts. Crafting or engaging in other creative pursuits is a great way to pass the time and alleviate anxiety related to selfquarantining. Katie Carey Levisay, a clinical neuropsychologist in Denver, said that crafting requires focused attention and forces a person to be completely immersed in the moment. For those who prefer to continue to avoid crowds until COVID-19 is in the world’s collective rearview mirror, producing handmade gifts also cuts down on trips to shopping malls and other retailers. Those interested in making handmade gifts this holiday season can consider these ideas. • Jewelry: Most craft stores now have entire aisles dedicated to making jewelry. From earring posts and loops to necklace brackets and all the essentials in between, jewelry crafters can create something fitting for the special people on their lists. • Candles: Candles add light, warmth and aroma to help a home feel cozy. With some basic components, such as a wax source, wick, tint, and scent oils, it’s easy to make

Six Ways to Stick to a Holiday Budget

T

he holidays are an exciting, fun and joyful time of year. And for many people, the holidays also are expensive. According to the Motley Fool Company, a financial wellness resource, the average American spent $882.45 on Christmas gifts, food, decorations, travel, and other holidayrelated expenses in 2019. Around 56 percent of gift shoppers set a budget for holiday spending, but only 64 percent stuck to it. In addition, 21.5 percent of respondents went into debt due to holiday shopping. Who doesn’t want to have a super holiday with delicious foods on the table and lots of presents to share with family and friends? While that’s tempting, such a bounty should never result in financial peril. These six strategies can make it easy to establish and stick to a budget this holiday season. 1. Budget for everything. When working out holiday spending plans, factor in all of the expenses associated with the holidays — not just the most obvious, like gifts. Costs for gas, parking lot fees, greeting cards, postage, travel

expenses, and much more should be included in your final number. 2. Determine how much you can s p e n d . Money for gifts and other holiday expenses should ideally come from your disposable income. Look at your finances in advance of the holiday season and figure out how much extra cash you have for the holidays, and use that figure to determine how much you should spend. Find ways to make up any deficit by curtailing expenses like dining out or entertainment extras. Many people plan to use credit cards to pay now and worry about the aftermath later. Only use credit cards if you have the money in the bank and can pay off the entire bill when the balance due is in January. 3. Set a spending limit for individuals. Based on your numbers and how

spending is measuring up to your budget. If necessary, scale back on one category if you’ve tipped the scales in spending on another. 6. Shop sales and deals. High-end stores may have the impressive tag, but their prices can set you back. Instead, look for comparable gifts at discount stores and other retailers. Also, if you must use a credit card, use one that earns you a cash-back bonus for added savings. A holiday budget is a must to avoid overspending and finding yourself in debt early next year.

much you plan to spend overall, start allocating money to categories, including gift recipients. Come up with a spending range for each person and stick to it. 4. Pay in cash as much as possible. It’s easy to know what you’re spending when using cash as opposed to credit. There is some risk with carrying around cash, but that risk may be offset by the benefit of spending only what you can afford to spend. 5. Track all purchases. Great Gifts for Book Lovers

B

ooks are very popular gifts come the holiday season. Genres that run the gamut from fantasy to nonfiction ensure there’s a book out there for everyone. But finding the right gift for a book-loving loved one may not be as easy as it seems. Avid readers may have personal book collections that rival local libraries, so it can be difficult to find something they haven’t already read. In addition, asking them what’s on their wish list of books can remove the element of surprise from holiday gift-giving. Fortunately, shoppers can still light up their favorite book lovers’ eyes this holiday season, even if they’re not giving them a recent bestseller. • Bookshelf: E-readers may provide instant access to millions of books, but many avid readers still prefer physical books. Bookshelves can make the perfect gift for book lovers who take great pride in their home libraries. Bookshelves come in all shapes, sizes and styles, from ladder bookcases to floating bookshelves to built-ins. A basic understanding of your loved one’s home decor preferences is all you need to find a bookshelf that can blend in seamlessly in his or her reading room. • Audio book subscription: Audio book subscription services have grown in popularity in recent years. These services make it possible for busy readers to devour their favorite books while commuting to and from work or running daily errands in the car. Amazon’s Audible

membership provides readers with a host of benefits, including discounts on audiobook purchases, monthly credits toward anything available through the service and even complimentary digital newspaper subscriptions. • Bookends: Book lovers tend to put a lot of effort into designing their reading rooms. Decorative bookends, which can have a humorous angle or tie into a theme that correlates to readers’ favorite literary genre (i.e., boat bookends for lovers of maritime histories), can make for great, unique gifts. • Embosser: Embossers allow readers to put their personal stamps on every book in their collections. That not only adds a unique touch to readers’ personal libraries, but also may increase the chances that the books they loan out to friends and family members are ultimately returned. After all, who wouldn’t return a book to its original owner when that book has been personally embossed? Many items make the perfect gift for book lovers, even if shoppers are unsure about buying their loved ones actual books.

Cooking for a Holiday Crowd

D

Thanks to our many loyal customers who support our business year after year !

ecorations and shopping draw much of the attention come the holiday season, and rightfully so. But many people’s fondest holiday memories occurred around the dinner table during meals with friends and family. Holiday foods tend to be rich, flavorful and time-consuming to prepare. However, all the effort is usually worth the satisfied smiles on the faces of loved ones. Planning holiday meals is challenging, and hosts often doubt if they have enough food for everyone. No one wants guests to leave feeling hungry, nor do they want to have tons of leftovers, much of which will inevitably end up in the trash. Determining how much food to serve involves figuring out a few key items, including the mix of guests (ratio of children, men and women), the length of the occasion, the timing of the event, and the type of meal one plans to serve. For example, if the holiday gathering is an afterdinner cocktail party, hosts can get away with offering very little food. However, hosts of holiday dinners have a lot more food to prepare. To get started, consider these general guidelines, courtesy of Allrecipes.com and The Spruce, a home living resource. • Think about which foods you plan to serve. Popular foods tend to go more quickly than other items, so serve more than the general portion guidelines suggest. Shellfish appetizers, roasted or mashed potatoes, wings, and slices of rich meat are examples of popular fare. • The more foods you offer, the smaller the

portion sizes can be. But because guests will likely want to try all the offerings, expect the average person to consume more food per individual when several foods are offered. • Most people will eat two to three portions each of appetizers or snacks. In fact, appetizers (for a hungry crowd) may be consumed in greater abundance than subsequent courses. • Average portion sizes for each guest include: 3 ounces of dips; 3 ounces of salad; 6 ounces of meat or main entrée; 5 ounces of starch; and 11⁄2 pieces of dessert. These estimates can be used to calculate how much food will be needed. • Think about adding “safety” items to the menu that can be pulled out in a pinch and don’t require much prep work. These can include cheese and crackers, extra bread, nuts, olives, or pretzels. Hosts who are overly concerned that guests may go overboard can tame portion sizes by hiring servers who can oversee buffet lines. Otherwise, serve guests plated meals directly from the kitchen, from which hosts can dole out the right amount of food to ensure everyone gets enough to eat.

opportunities when the kids are in school or at daycare to bring gifts into the house and then wrap them. Wrapping as you go can help to ensure there are no “spoiler alerts” prior to the holidays. Create a wrapping station A dedicated area for wrapping can streamline the process. Gift wrapping supplies can be tough to keep organized because they’re usually awkward sizes and can eat up a lot of space. That’s where a wrapping station can come into play. It can be custom-made or you can use items already around the house. A laundry room or a large closet can be the ideal location for a wrapping station. Because wrapping paper rolls are the most cumbersome wrapping supplies, find a way to corral them. A tall laundry hamper works, or consider hanging wrapping paper rolls horizontally on thin curtain rods attached to a wall or the back of a door. Simply pull off the amount of paper you need and cut. Organize other supplies in a nearby drawer or organizational caddy. Store gift bags and tissue paper in a fabric tote bag. Having everything within arm’s reach cuts down on time spent searching for supplies. It’s that time of year for shopping and wrapping. Ensure it is a low-stress experience with some time-saving tips.

he holiday season is a busy time of year. People devote many hours to generating gift lists and planning their shopping excursions. Shopping can be all-encompassing during the holiday season, but it is only half of the gift-giving equation. After all of those toys, articles of clothing and other goodies are purchased, those items will need to be wrapped and hidden away. Gift-givers may be looking for ways to make these tasks just a little easier. Shop early The sooner you begin shopping, the more time you will have to purchase everything you need and then get it prepared for giving. While Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales feature great deals, there are discounts to be had all year long if you keep your eyes open. Grab an item here and there when there is something that catches your eye and fits the needs of a gift recipient. Shopping early also affords shoppers a greater buffer if they plan to do some of their shopping online. Shipping times have changed due to COVID-19, which has disrupted some supply chains and put added pressure on shipping companies. The U.S. Postal Service says products and packages may require more time to be delivered due to limited transportation availability, so shopping early can help ensure everything arrives on time. Tackle the kids’ gifts first Watching children’s bright grins and all their excitement opening presents can make all the hard work worth it. Be sure that you shop for all of the gifts for children in your household first, especially if you play Santa’s helper. Use

While one child may be mature enough to handle a toy, another of the same age may not be ready for it. • Recognize choking hazards in toys, which may include marbles, small balls and uninflated balloons. Button batteries, which come in many electronics, can be a choking hazard and cause damage to intestines if swallowed. • Toys with strings and straps can strangle young children and should be avoided. • Inspect all toys for sharp edges or points. Even stuffed animals with internal wires can stab, cut or shock. • Avoid toys that have parts that fly off, as they can injure the eyes or other parts of the body. • Look for nontoxic labels on toys, including crayons, markers and other art supplies. • Toys made of fabric should be labeled as flame-resistant or flame-retardant. • Painted toys must use lead-free paint. • Look for the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) label, which signifies that the toy has passed the group’s safety inspection standards. • Monitor toy usage during play, and frequently examine toys to see if wear and tear has made them into hazards. The holiday season is an exciting time for children eager to play with new toys and games. Ensuring those gifts are safe can make for a healthy giving season.

Holiday Gift Guide

ew people garner as much delight from opening holiday gifts as young children. The holiday season is a wonder to behold, culminating with brightly wrapped presents just waiting to be revealed. For parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and friends, nothing is more memorable than watching the pure joy on a child’s face when he or she opens a holiday gift. As a result, well-meaning gift-givers sometimes forget to consider safety when seeking out toys and games for kids. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission says there were more than 250,000 toy-related injuries treated in American hospital emergency departments in 2017. Most of these injuries were attributed to nonmotorized scooters, toy balls and toy vehicles. However, any toy that is not age-appropriate has the potential to cause harm. That is why the organization Prevent Blindness America, which spearheaded the campaign to make December Safe Toys and Gifts Month, advises caution when gifting youngsters. The following are some guidelines when gifting young kids, courtesy of PBA, the CPSC and Kids Health® by Nemours. • Always read labels to see if the toy is right for a child’s age. Don’t buy a toy that is too mature for a child even if you think it would be a big hit. • Consider a gift recipient’s temperament and behavior before purchasing a toy.

iving gifts during the holiday season may be rewarding, but certain people on your shopping list may leave you scratching your head wondering what to buy. Teenagers often fall into that confusing category. As trends and interests change at a moment’s notice, adults may not know what to get the teenagers on their list. These suggestions can set you on the right course. Gadgets Teens like staying abreast of the latest technology, and what better way to do so than with hot-off-the-assembly-line products? Moderns teens use multiple mobile devices — from tablets to smartphones to notebook computers — so an outlet multiplier with surge protection could be the way to go. A charging caddy that keeps all of their devices organized and within reach while replenishing the batteries can make for another go-to gift. While shopping for gadgets, think about investing in Bluetooth-enabled earbuds or over-the-ear headphones. This way teens can enjoy their favorite streaming music stations or binge Netflix series without disturbing others. Gym equipment Adolescents are conscious of their personal health and body image. To foster positive experiences, gift givers can encourage healthy physical activity. A gym membership or personal fitness equipment can help teens get on track with a weekly regimen. Luggage/travel gear

A thirst for exploration may inspire teens to travel the country or the world. A highquality piece of luggage can be a building block for teens’ travel gear. Other travel items to consider are RFID blocker ID and credit card holders, money toward a passport or an overnight toiletries bag. Gaming Many teens immerse themselves in gameplay, whether solo or online multiplayer. Games can be enjoyed while using various consoles, computers and even smartphones. Find out which platform teens are using and then purchase gift cards, points or e-codes so that they can get new games or enjoy in-app purchases and upgrades. School funding Some gifts can focus on the future, including teens’ education. Consider donating to or opening up an account to help fund college costs. Different plans have different annual contribution limits and tax deferments, so it’s a good idea to speak with a financial professional to figure out which avenue is right for you and your gift recipient. Retailer gift cards Teenagers always enjoy some extra purchasing power, so gift cards to their favorite retailers are likely to be a hit. If you’re not sure where the teen on your list shops, consider a gift card good for any store in a local mall. Shopping for gifts for teens can be a little easier if shoppers get a nudge in the right direction.

their own equipment, and such gear also can make it easier for them to lend a hand. A spatula made for youngsters can make it easier for kids to move cookies from a baking sheet to a platter, while colorful measuring cups and their own whisk can excite youngsters about baking. • Plan ahead. Seasoned bakers know that it’s imperative to have the right supplies, including ingredients, on hand before beginning a baking session. That’s even more necessary when baking with kids, who might not be as patient as moms and dads hope if a baking session has to be paused to run to the store for a missing ingredient or to dig out some tools from the back of the pantry. Plan ahead by setting

• Make a mess. Don’t be afraid to get a little messy when baking with children. Moms and dads may love a clean kitchen, but kids tend to have more fun in the kitchen when things get a little messy. Douse each other with a little flour and make a joke of things if some ingredients find their way onto the counter or the floor instead of into your mixing bowl. Parents can make the holiday baking that much more fun by letting their kids pitch in this year.

T

he holiday season is steeped in tradition. Many holiday traditions are centered around food, with much of the focus on all of the decadent treats and desserts taking center stage at many family gatherings. Many parents hope to involve their children in as many family holiday traditions as they can. Holiday baking is one kid-friendly tradition, and parents can make it even more so by taking a few simple steps before they get started. • Purchase kid-friendly baking equipment. Bakers rely on lots of tools to make cookies, cakes and other delicacies. That equipment is even available in kids’ sizes. Kids may be more excited about baking if they have

everything out and assembling all the necessary ingredients the night before you plan to bake. • Delegate wisely. Young kids may want to do everything mom and dad do, but baking is a delicate science that requires careful attention to detail and a strict adherence to recipes. So, it’s important that parents delegate wisely when involving children in holiday baking. Whisking, stirring and topping off cookies with frosting and sprinkles are fun, kid-friendly tasks. • Add some fun foods to the menu. If you plan to bake holiday cookies, purchase kidfriendly holiday cookie cutters before your baking session so youngsters have as much fun as possible. Kids may have more fun if they get to make Santa Claus, Frosty or Rudolph cookies.
