From the Editor…

What’s the Haps?

W

e are officially at the beginning of winter blues season. It’s cold. It’s dark. People all over are sick. It’s generally pretty icky. The best way to stave off the winter dull drums is to get out of the house. There are always a ton of things going on locally so get out and enjoy them! It always amazes me the number of free or low-cost community dinners happening in the area on a regular basis. For example: on the 17th there is a lasagna dinner at Trinity Episcopal in Williamsport for just $9.75 for adults. On the 18th there is a free community dinner at St. Paul-Calvary in Williamsport. On the 20th there is a chicken & biscuit dinner ($9.00) at Bethany Evangelical in Montoursville and a free hot lunch at Clinton Baptist in Montgomery. You can get all the specifics on our Community Calendar page on pages 22 and 23. There is also a spaghetti dinner at the Son’s of Italy on East Third St. in Williamsport on the 23rd. Cost is $7.75 and runs from 4:30-7:30 p.m. and is open to the public that evening. This is a great way to have an inexpensive dinner with your family and support your local community at the same time.

Musically, Williamsport and the surrounding area is always a hotbed of activity. On Thursday the 18th, you can check out “A Night with Janis Joplin” at the Community Arts Center. The show starts at 7:30 p.m. The 18th also brings former “American Idol” contestant Aaron Kelly to Christian Light Books & Gift for an exclusive concert at 6:00 p.m. Thursday also brings music to The Brickyard downtown. You can check out Nugget Nectar First Squeeze at 5:00 p.m. On Friday the 19th, you can check out Qwister at Barrel 135 from 9-11 p.m. Also, from 10:00 p.m.-1:00 a.m. you check out Reggae Night at Morrone’s Pub. The Bar on Market has music Wednesday-Saturday, including Sean Farley, Levi’s House Band, Clark McLane Band and the Keystone Ska Exchange. Music starts at 9:00 p.m. or 10:00 p.m. each night. On Saturday the 20th, head to the Lock Haven Elks Lodge #182 for the Smoked Country Jam Winter Show With The Hillbilly Gypsies from 7-10 p.m. Also on Saturday, check out Mum’s the Word at the Genetti Taphouse at 9:00 p.m. Zen

Again digs deep into its Led Zeppelin pocket to bring you all the best on Saturday at 9:00 p.m. at the Stonehouse, downtown in Pine Square. LIXX is playing at the Jersey Shore Elks at 9:00 p.m. And finally, though this list Steph Nordstrom barely scrapes the top of what is going on this weekend, Telectro with Jeff Wisor at the Bullfrog at 9:00 p.m. If art is more your thing, be sure to check out the opening reception of “Books Undone” from 4:30-6:30 p.m. at the Gallery at Penn College. This will be a national, juried show of altered books with prizes awarded at 5:30 p.m. If you prefer to create art, there are a ton of opportunities to do so at places like Centered Earth in Montoursville, or Wine & Design downtown, or Whitesel Stained Glass in Cogan Station. As you can see, there are plenty of things to do in the area around here this weekend. And, remember, this is just this weekend! This is also just the ‘artsy’ type stuff. This doesn’t include the hunting, fishing, hiking, and other outdoor opportunities that the Valley offers. One other way you can get out of the house and help those in need is to donate

blood. The Red Cross is still in urgent need of blood donations. Hurricanes, floods, wildfires, mudslides, arctic temperatures, all result in depleted blood reserves. So if you are able, eligible and healthy, please donate. Several donation opportunities are coming up in the next week including: Penn College – Jan 17th from noon6:00 p.m., Duboistown Fire Dept. – Jan 18th from 1:00-6:00 p.m. and St. Ann’s Catholic Church – Jan. 23rd from 1:006:00 p.m. The Red Cross makes donating super simple these days. You can fill out your questionnaire online before your appointment and use the app to get your ‘fast pass’ so you are in and out as quickly as possible. As always, remember that your one donation can save up to three lives. More if you are eligible to make a Power Red donation. There are plenty of opportunities to get out of the house and enjoy the area. You just have to be willing to do a little digging. Get out and enjoy all that Lycoming County and the surrounding area have to offer! I know y’all are tired of seeing me here, but I can’t seem to get Jimmy out of the woods. He’ll be back shortly though. He’s bound to run out of things to shoot eventually right?

veryone knows about calling 911 when there is an emergency requiring the police, fire, or ambulance services. What is not nearly as well known is calling 211, the number for information on available social services. At a recent County Commissioners Meeting, Jack McKernan distributed pamphlets to the “Help Line” serving North-Eastern Pennsylvania, including Lycoming County. Simply dialing 211 at any time on any day can access a vast array of valuable information and referral services. For individuals, as well as families, in need, this number will connect to information and referral for everything from supplemental food assistance, energy assistance, homeless services, insurance for children, child abuse/neglect reports, acquiring social security and even evacuation procedures for the disabled. Help Line is an information and referral service and first response point for crisis calls in Lycoming, Clinton, Sullivan, Union, and twelve other counties in northern Pennsylvania. It operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, staffed by trained caseworkers as a program of the Family Service Association of NEPA (North Eastern Pennsylvania Alliance). The idea of a 3-digit emergency number began with 911, which was established in

1968 by AT&T (who held a monopoly on phone service at the time). Other help services that would have appreciated a shortcut such as this had to do with the traditional ten-digit telephone numbers. This was until the Federal Communications Commission determined in 1992 to reserve seven other N11 numbers. Currently, 811 is designed for underground public utility locations (dial before you dig!), 711 for the deaf and hard of hearing, 611 for telephone company customer service, 511 for traffic and weather information, 411 for directory assistance, and 311 for municipal government services. 211 is designated for community services and information, generally served by United Way organizations in most parts of the United States. Dialing 211 in our region connects to Help Line, a program of Family Services Association of Northeastern Pennsylvania and funded in part by the United Way. Help Line was established in 1972 after Hurricane Agnes to provide a central resource for vital information for the victims of this devastating disaster. In 1975 Help Line entered into agreements with a number of area agencies to provide 24-hour crisis services. Soon after, other agencies signed onto the service and their area of service rapidly expanded. Many people who are looking for aid assistance or help information often do not know where to begin, and thus dialing 211 is of great benefit. It cuts through the red

tape of endless menus that are often encountered when calling government offices or other aid agencies. Generally, during normal business hours, answering 211 will be a real human being that can answer questions and provide vital information and contact information to most of the local health and human resources agencies and organizations. It even has translation service available, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. If experience counts for anything, it is very impressive that Help Line has handled over 2.8 million calls since the start of operations in 1972. Programs and organizations go through changes, and it is hard to keep up. So, from trying to locate the nearest AA group, to reporting a runaway, to any kind of help needed in the area of health and human services, Help Line can be reached by simply dialing 211. The service is free, confidential, and absolutely trustworthy. Help Line is a member of the Alliance of Information & Referral Systems (AIRS) and the Pennsylvania Alliance of Information & Referral Systems (PA AIRS).

oy Scouting has been an integral part of the American scene, as well as here in Lycoming County, for more than 100 years. One local Scout Troop, Boy Scout Troop 14 of St. John’s-Newberry United Methodist Church, will be celebrating its 100th anniversary next week. Troop 14 is the oldest consecutively chartered troop in the Susquehanna Council of the Boy Scouts of America, which serves five counties here in northcentral Pennsylvania. Troop 14, was chartered as “Troop 1, Newberry” on January 22, 1918, at St. John’s Evangelical Church (today’s St. John’s-Newberry United Methodist Church). When the Williamsport Council of the Boy Scouts of America was organized in November of 1919, the Troop was re-designated “Troop 14.” Throughout its history, camping and outdoor craft and lore have been an important part of Troop 14’s activities. Troop members have camped at many locations throughout the years. The troop was present at the dedication of Camp Kline, the venerable and historic camp used by area Scouts for many years. Troop 14 members attend-

ed Camp Kline every year, except for two, between 1920 and 1971. The camp was severely damaged during the 1972 flood and soon passed out of existence. Hundreds of Troop 14 scouts and leaders have attended the Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico, which is Boy Scouting’s premier wilderness challenge experience. They have also attended the Sea Base in Florida, and the Northern Tier Adventure Base in Minnesota. Starting in 1977, members of Troop 14 have attended summer camp at Camp Karoodinha in western Union County. Bob Weaver Jr., one of the 126 Eagle Scouts produced by Troop 14 and a member of the troop’s anniversary committee, was asked what accounted for the longevity of the troop. He told Webb Weekly, “We have been very fortunate to have had some very dedicated and involved scoutmasters and volunteers who served the troop for many years. They helped to build a fine scouting tradition for our troop, men such as Mitch Younkin, Don Mader — who was my scoutmaster — Paul McBride, John Springman, and Don Cohick, just to name a few. The present scoutmaster is John Andreacci.” Weaver added that the scout committee of the troop made up of adult volunteers that advise and help

of the stalwarts at helping with the supper for many years. Troop 14 honored him, along with Jim Fortney and the late Ernie Fisher, by presenting them with the “Golden Spatula Award,” in recognition for their longtime dedicated service to the pancake supper. It was one of my uncle’s most cherished possessions. The continued enthusiastic support of the congregation at St. John’s-Newberry was also cited by Weaver as a source of real strength for the troop. “I think the congregation is very proud of the troop and all it has accomplished over the years as part of its youth ministry,” Weaver said. “And we are

with the affairs of the troop, averages about 20 years of service for each volunteer and that provides continuity and helps to promote the tradition of scouting and all the service that it entails. My family also has its own involvement as part of the scouting tradition at Troop 14. My father (Lou Sr.) and his two brothers, John and Skip, were also scouts at Troop 14. Skip also served on the scout committee for more than 20 years. Skip’s son, “Butch” is one of Troop 14’s Eagle Scouts. Troop 14 has two main annual fundraisers that help it monetarily, and that is the pancake supper and the apple dumpling sale. My uncle Skip was one

proud that we are able to represent St. John’s-Newberry and all the fine people of this congregation.” Weaver believes that Scouting has an appeal of its own by developing skills that can be used throughout life. Skills such as leadership, first aid, conservation and all things related to camping and the outdoors, as well as a commitment to community service, clean living, and consideration for others. “We are proud to see boys become young men,” Weaver said. “It is gratifying to see them learn skills and develop the ethic that makes them productive

and vital members of their community.” When Weaver was a scout at St. John’s there were about 45 scouts in the troop. He said that now there are about 25 and the number has not dipped below that, which he believes is pretty good considering that many scout troops are struggling to maintain their memberships. He believes the future of scouting and for Troop 14 is bright. “Scouting is still viable and exciting to be involved with, and I think the recent decision at the national level to include girls will help scouting to be more family-friendly,” Weaver said. “Brothers and

CONSIDERING OPTIONS

Amid changing expectations, it is more desirable than ever for families to have frank discussions about body disposition and funerals. As more Americans (50.2%) have, for the first time, chosen cremation over burial, those making choices for themselves must inform other family members of their wishes. With so many options available (such as body donation and “green burial”), there is no longer a single script to follow when it comes to deciding how the body will be disposed of and how the deceased will be remembered and celebrated. As funeral norms change, there is more room for creativity. In the end, it’s important to impress upon family members what the people planning their own funerals want and the reasons behind these wishes. At KNIGHT-CONFER FUNERAL HOME, we understand that making the many decisions which come at a time of loss can be difficult. We offer our support by providing you with options as you consider making immediate arrangements. To learn more about the funeral and memorial services we offer, please call 570-323-7717. We are located at 1914 Memorial Avenue, where we have been serving our community with care since 1879. The Jaded Eye…

It’s 2018 New Ventures, No Dentures…

T

he New Year has begun in fine fashion. Got some much-needed rest and relaxation, as in getting two days off in a row for me is as rare as a total eclipse of the sun. As our eyes know, that was already last year! As mentioned in an earlier piece, trying to “give back” with my time and energy is a priority in 2018. It was nice to hand out toy cars and trucks to boys and girls I saw while in doctors’ offices. Also, put things in motion Christmas weekend by taking some eager students on a jovial jaunt to do some

“relic reeling.” That is a trip to the past via antique marts. It is something I did with my parents at a young age, so I am well versed. It can be fun and rewarding. For many of us, 2018 only proves where we are and how far we’ve gone in life. But for one day it was time to go back to where we were. As usual, I always find a few knickknacks to come home, but what the kids decided to buy blew my mind. Not only could it be a “link to the past,” but a “window to the future.” They

purchased a vintage Ouija (pronounced WEE-je) board! Wow, for just a few bucks spent on a board game I could see what 2018 holds in store for me! Footnote: Crystal balls intrigue me, but none were to be found. Not only could this board predict my fate, Gerry but I might also want Ayers to contact the deceased. Hey Mom, what’s it like rubbing elbows with Sinatra, the Kennedys, Audrey Hepburn, and even George Michael (“Faith”) and Prince (“Purple Rain”) up there? And what is Uncle Billy and niece Ellie up to?

LUNCH BUFFET

HELLER’S

Oh, everyone was excited about the prospects of sitting at a table with a device that was going to shake back and forth with valued and vital information for us! Then, all of a sudden (around mile marker 143 or so) things did get “shaky” before the Ouija board landed. The youngsters texted their friends and googled online to get facts about this contraption. It began to get creepy. Some background information: the Ouija, also known as a spirit board or talking board, is a flat board marked with the letters of the alphabet, the numbers 0-9, the words “yes,” “no,” and “goodbye,” along with various symbols and graphics. A small heart-shaped piece of wood or plastic, called a planchette is used, as

participants (suckers?) place their fingers on it and move it around the board to spell out words. According to the game maker, players take turns asking questions and then “wait” to see what the planchette spells out for them. Can a game that was introduced in 1890 prove relevant today? Spiritualists believed that the deceased were able to contact the living. Some feel this game can lead to demonic possessions. Christians caution inexperienced users against partaking. The scientific community shuns it; they say the actions of the board can be parsimoniously explained by unconscious moments of those controlling the pointer, a psychophysiological phenomenon known as the ideomotor effect. So much for the speculation and mumbo jumbo. Let’s get on with it! Hand me the planchette thingy and let’s get this ball rolling! Onto the questions! Will 2018 be a healthy, cancer-free time period for me? Will California experience the massive earthquake that everyone has been predicting for decades? Will we be visiting a newly formed island? Is it humanly possible an attractive, fun loving, car-crazed female proposes to me in 2018? Or perhaps 2023? (In this new age of female awareness and equal pay, let them make the first move. And let them buy the ring!) If the game board doesn’t rattle, but my pipes are tapping does that mean something in the house is going to break? Or only that

Tony Orlando and Dawn are coming to visit? Will our nation be intact in the year 2018, or will North Korea play with that nuclear warhead detonation button that rests on a lunatic’s desk? Time to cash in the chips? Can you advise as to where I can locate a set of rubber weather-stripping for my 1993 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme convertible? Hemming’s Motor News and prayers have not helped in this quest this far. I think my inquiries to the almighty Ouija board are within reason. I mean I didn’t ask for winning Powerball numbers or Miss America’s cell number. We were preparing to set up a time and date and location to put this board to the test and then. Fear with a capital “F” seeped into this scene like water into your basement. The kids were told, “bad things shall happen,” after using the board. Not so kind or favorable answers to tough questions may pop up like pesky zits on a rosy complexion. I thought to myself if the Ouija board is accurate, does the White House utilize it? Did Obama secretly tell Trump he left the board on the top shelf in the library closet? Does Wall Street whip it out when “insider trading” isn’t cutting it? Do Las Vegas gamblers toy with it before a few rounds of blackjack? I can tell you this regarding 2018. My fragile, but formidable, life consists of what is now and what has been. Nothing more, nothing less. I may be jaded, but I haven’t seen everything. That includes tomorrow.

The Bookworm Sez By Terri Schlichenmeyer “Into the Water” by Paula Hawkins c.2017, Riverhead Books $28.00 389 pages – c.2017, Doubleday Canada $34.95 Canada – 389 pages

R

ow, row, row your boat. That’s not the only way to get around in the water, but it could be the driest one going gently down the stream. Still, you must do it carefully, carefully, carefully, carefully because, as in the novel, “Into the Water” by Paula Hawkins, there’s no merrily when someone dies. Danielle “Nel” Abbott didn’t jump. Then again, maybe she did. Or maybe she merely got careless at the top of the cliff overlooking the river that locals called the Drowning Pool, and she slipped. Everybody knew Nel was doing research on the Pool and the women who died there through the centuries, beginning with the teenager accused of witchcraft; Nel’s own drowning in the Pool would’ve been the last chapter.

For the people of Beckford, Nel’s death might’ve been just another unfortunate part of the Drowning Pool legend, just a sad single mother who had too much to drink… except that Katie Whittaker went into the river just weeks before. Poor Katie had loaded her backpack with stones, and drowned herself one summer afternoon. Her family, of course, still grieved – as did her best friend, Lena, Nel’s daughter, who knew exactly why it happened. Jules Abbott hadn’t spoken to her sister in years. She hardly knew Nel anymore, not since they were kids, not since Nel betrayed Jules in the most horrible way. They’d never really been close anyhow, and that estrangement complicated things: as Lena’s next of kin, Jules was faced with raising a fifteen-year-old she barely knew, a girl who seemed to hate her. And so Jules began talking to the ghost of her sister. Nickie Sage, the “psychic” in town, said she couldn’t reach Nel clearly, but Jules could. She felt Nel’s presence in the house, in the town, by the river. She could hear Nel’s voice, and the words Nel wrote in her

more heart-pounding: the eerie ghostfilled past that haunts Beckford, or the creepy residents who seem to know a little bit too much about one another. Both, perhaps, added to the universal fear of drowning, make this a novel that will literally keep you guessing (and shivering) until the very last chapter. You may struggle with the beginning of this book, but stick with it. It takes awhile to get settled but once you do, this is the most unsettling book you’ll read this winter. For you, novel lovers, reading “Into the Water” is a dream.

manuscript: “Beckford is not a suicide spot. Beckford is a place to get rid of troublesome women.” For the first many pages, reading “Into the Water” is a lot like looking up toward the surface from the bottom of a lake: everything’s murky and slow and you really can’t quite make out who or what you’re seeing. Slowly, though (ever-so-slowly), author Paula Hawkins pulls readers up through the depths, character by clue, until we’re grounded and panting from the adrenaline rush that is this novel. Indeed, it’s difficult to tell which is

he Community Theatre League in Williamsport, PA will present the touching comedy Over the Tavern by Tom Dudzick on January 19, 20, 25, 26, and 27 at 7:30 p.m., and 28 at 2:00 p.m. In that most idealized period of 20thcentury America, the Eisenhower years of the 1950s, the Pazinski family has a lot going on in their cramped Buffalo apartment. The youngest of the bunch, 12-year-old Rudy, is a smart, wisecracking kid who’s starting to question family values and the Roman Catholic Church. When Rudy goes up against the ruler-wielding Sister Clarissa and announces that, instead of being confirmed, he’d rather shop around for a more “fun” religion, all hell breaks loose, literally. A warm and hilarious look at family, God, and growing up. Over the Tavern premiered at the Studio Arena Theatre in Buffalo, New York in 1994. Since then, it has enjoyed over two hundred performances nationwide, running for over a year in Chicago, where it was called “a little bit of heaven.” Playwright Tom Dudzick calls this play “semi-autobiographical” about growing up Catholic in Buffalo.

“Tom Dudzick has woven religion into a family’s struggle in such a hilarious, but respectable way,” says Sandie Fairman, who returns to CTL as a Director this season, after directing Belles in 2016 and The Best Man in 2014, “People will see their own family dynamics in this wonderful story. It has been heartwarming to see this cast come together as a family on and off stage. They make me laugh every night!” Aidan Connor, a 7th-grade student at C.E. McCall Middle School in Montoursville plays Rudy, the play’s protagonist. “I hope audiences will get six unique characters with different personalities and an interesting story that unfolds,” Connor says, “I think this story is important because it’s based on the author’s life, and it’s about growing up, and I think everyone can relate to it in some way. This cast has been very encouraging as I’ve been working on this part.” The cast of Over the Tavern features familiar Community Theatre League performers, as well as cast members brand new to the company. The cast includes Aidan Connor as Rudy, Tara Deljanovan as Sister Clarissa, and

Christian Motorcyclist Meeting What: Local CMA meeting (Christian Motorcyclists Association), an international organization founded by one man in 1975. We raised almost $4.4 million dollars last year in our annual fundraising ride—Run For The Son! Over $800,000 went to each of these three: Missionary Ventures, Open Doors, and the Jesus Film Project. Through Missionary Ventures we distributed bicycles, motorcycles, horses, boats, 3 horse & buggies, 2 snowmobiles, and 1 camel. Through Open Doors, 2.6 million Bibles, and via the Jesus Film Project over 119 million people have viewed the life of Christ in their own heart language. The results are phenomenal! CMA’s main mission is to bikers, to reveal the love of Jesus and to be a servant in any way we can. If you are a biker, and a Christian, join us at our meeting and get acquainted with us. See what we are doing. If you are not a Christian, but are intrigued by all this, you are welcome to join us at our meeting, too! THREE ESSENTIAL DOCUMENTS TO RING IN THE NEW YEAR

of jail free cards when it comes to time management for lunches and supper. In addition to meals, you can also have a weekly plan for you and your family’s clothes. Like shopping lists for food, this timesaver starts with laundry because, ideally, what you wear during the week should be clean. As you fold your clean clothes, you can set aside outfits for the week. This time of year, you definitely want to check the weather to make sure what you have planned is appropriate to the forecast, and keep your schedule in mind, especially for work wear. Then, physically place things within reach, i.e., the front of your closet, or piled neatly on a chair or chest in the order you’ll wear everything. Hopefully, your spouse and older children can do this for themselves. For my toddler, I line up her outfits by day right by her crib so whoever’s turn it is to dress her in the mornings can simply reach for her clothes and start wrestling her into them. Remember, not everything has to be done by you. Feel free to designate the workload by assigning chores and “to dos” to others in the household. Whether it’s kids, spouses, or roommates, everyone should have a

Every new year we make resolutions and promise we’ll get things in order. This is also a good time to make sure your documents meet your needs. Your Will is the basic estate planning document in which you name an executor who will settle your estate and in which you set forth how your estate will be distributed. Your Will may contain one or more trusts for the benefit of spouse, children, grandchildren or others. A bypass clause is especially important to protect against your estate passing to an institutionalized spouse. Most Wills do not have a bypass clause and that can be a grievous and expensive omission. Your Power-of-Attorney names someone to do your business for you if you are unable to do so. A well-drafted durable POA is imperative if you become a resident of a nursing home. Your Living Will states your preference as to whether or not you want extraordinary life-prolonging measures. With these three essential documents professionally prepared by attorneys experienced and knowledgeable in the issues facing older generations you can feel reasonably assured that you have in place the tools you will need to face the new year. We will review your essential documents for free to determine if they meet your needs. From all of us at Greevy & Shoemaker, best wishes for a Healthy and Happy New Year!

responsibility list. Of course, these don’t need to be set in stone. It’s good to switch things up every few months so that the same person isn’t stuck with garbage duty every week. These time-savers can also be applied outside of the home. At work, being proactive with small tasks, planning ahead, and delegating when appropriate will also save you time throughout your day. Same goes for keeping up with family and friends. When you think about that quick phone call or text to check in with a loved one, do it right away. Plan out the birthdays and anniversaries for the month and stock up on greeting cards. And be open to spreading out responsibility to take the burden off of your shoulders. Lastly, whether it’s at home, work, or general running around, try to tackle the most unpleasant tasks first. If you’ve been avoiding a work assignment, a house project, or a tedious visit with your half-deaf great uncle, putting it off won’t make the undertaking any easier. It’s time to bite the bullet and move forward. Once you get going, the less it’ll weigh on you and take up space in your mind and on your To Do list.

Wedding Costs: What to Expect

N

around $2,000 for a three to four-hour party. Some reception sites combine the room cost with the food and beverage costs, while others have à la carte fees. • Cake: Wedding cakes tend to be multitiered intricate designs, so they will cost more than birthday cakes. According to Statistics Brain, wedding dessert will come in around $390. • Music: The Knot says wedding bands cost around $3,500, which is more than twice as much as hiring a deejay ($1,200). Soloists or ceremony musicians may cost around $650. • Transportation: Limousines and other transportation prices vary depending on the vehicle(s) couples choose. The Knot notes that budgeting between $400 and $500 for transportation might be wise. • Wedding gown: Brides-to-be should expect their gowns to cost around $1,100 and the veil or headpiece to be roughly $120, according to the Association of Bridal Consultants. • Photography and Video: Preserving wedding day memories costs around $2,800 for video and photography services, based on data from Statistics Brain. The smaller details, such as accessories, gifts, officiant fees, stationery, spa services, and favors can quickly add up as well. Couples should be sure to leave some wiggle room in their budgets for incidental expenses that may pop up.

ewly engaged couples may experience an array of emotions when they sit down to plan their weddings. Some couples cannot wait to jump into planning and want to catalog every aspect of the process, while others may proceed with caution because they don’t know what to expect — particularly in regard to cost. Many couples find it difficult to create their wedding budgets because they have no previous experience to draw on. The wedding planning advisor CostofWedding.com indicates the average wedding cost in the United States is $26,720, with most people spending between $20,000 and $34,000. Seventh Heaven Event Catering states that, in Canada, the average wedding costs around $30,000. Such costs can vary greatly depending on couples’ preferences, including where they hope to tie the knot. By breaking down wedding expenses, couples can get a clearer picture of how much they may need to pay for their weddings and where they may need to cut costs. • Reception site: According to The Knot, a premiere wedding planning resource, couples can expect their receptions to eat up the largest chunk of their wedding budgets. Wedding reception venues may cost between $10,000 and $15,000. The average price for catering per person is roughly $70. Bar service may be

Wedding Tools Make Planning Easier

E

nsuring an event goes on with minimal hiccups takes patience and thorough planning. This is especially true for weddings, when many elements must merge together for a memorable day. Today’s couples have a bevy of new resources at their disposal to facilitate wedding planning. The internet makes vetting vendors and reading reviews that much easier, but wedding-related apps also can simplify wedding planning. The following are some top picks as culled by Wedding Shoppe, Inc., The Knot and Lifehacker. • Wedding Spot: Couples can search for their ideal wedding venue based on

location, budget, styles, and capacity. The website enables users to plan their ideal weddings and get cost estimates based on guest list and options. Users also can access discounts and exclusive deals. • Wedding LookBook: This app enables couples to browse through thousands of dresses, accessories, jewelry, and much more. The app will help customers find products in their area. • Shutterfly: This photo, invitation and image-sharing tool can be an inexpensive place to create save-the-date stationery, invitations, and photo memory books. • Appy Couple: This app and website helps couples manage their budgets, timelines,

wedding parties, and seating charts, while also allowing them to share photos. There is a free version and basic packages that allow access to more features. • iWedding Deluxe: In addition to managing timelines, to-do lists and vendors, this app offers inspiration ideas for gowns, manages and tracks gifts, and offers first dance suggestions from iTunes. However, it is only available to iPhone users. • AllSeated: This tool can help couples figure out seating arrangements by creating 3D floor plans of the event, and couples can pull contacts from email and social networks to establish a guest list. If floor plans are unavailable in their database, they can be drawn.

• The Knot’s Marketplace: With the click of a button, couples can search for wedding vendors in all different categories, read reviews, and directly connect with those businesses. • HitchSwitch: Brides or grooms who may be changing their names can do so in one convenient place. Three different packages cater to various name-changing needs. • Vistaprint: These stationery specialists offer an array of services, from cards to invitations to personalized envelopes. Once a design is chosen, Vistaprint will offer add-on suggestions for coordinating items, helping to create a cohesive look for the festivities. Wedding websites, apps and more can streamline wedding planning.

rides and grooms understandably feel a little stress when planning their weddings. Adding to the pressure is the fact that, according to a WeddingWire.com report, the average couple in their 30s spends $32,000 on their wedding. That is a lot of money riding on one day. But planning a wedding can be even more fun than it is stressful, especially for those couples who employ a few tricks of the wedding planning trade. 1. Fake the cake. Save some money by asking the bakery cake artist to decorate a foam-tiered “mock” cake for pictures and display, and serve guests from an

inexpensive sheet cake in the kitchen. 2. Use labels. Once the guest list is finalized, create a database of guests’ addresses. Print out two sets of labels: One for addressing the invitations and the other to address the thank-you cards. 3. RSVP tricks: Number the back of RSVP cards and correspond the numbers to the guest list. If one or more responses is illegible, refer to the number to figure it out. 4. Embrace inexpensive decor. Dollar stores and craft stores are great places to find inexpensive decorative items. Empty wine bottles can be painted or glazed to

serve as vases. Candle lanterns can be picked up at low cost at many retailers. 5. Create an email address. To have all of the wedding-related details in one place, create a separate email address exclusively for wedding correspondence. 6. Use veil weights. These weights can be sewn into veils to prevent fly-aways during outdoor ceremonies or photoshoots. 7. Keep bugs at bay. Spray chair and reception table legs with insect repellent. Dryer sheets also can be tucked into inconspicuous spots to keep bugs away. 8. Save money on favors. Unless the favor is something to eat or something especially practical, you may consider skipping the

favors altogether, as many guests tend to forget to take them home anyway. 9. Use page markers for seating. Use multicolored, self-sticking page markers to create easy seating arrangements. Each color can represent a category: His, Hers, Friends, Work. 10. Make a photo clothesline. A clever and inexpensive idea is to pin photos of the couple to a string, cataloguing how they met and their time together leading up to the wedding. Weddings can be expensive and stressful; therefore, couples can use all the tips they can to corral their expenses and tame their nerves.

o one has tried to find out how many college students can fill the telephone booth at Third and Campbell Street, but this much is known. More people get into that booth every day (one at a time) than any other in Williamsport. The authority for that statement is Clarence Welliver, manager of Bell Telephone’s office here. He singled out the Third and Campbell booth as the most popular of the 35 outdoor phone booths spotted around the city and the numerous indoor pay phones. Five phone calls from the booth were made during a one-hour spot check last week. People waiting across the street for the Newberry bus are another source of customers for the booth, as well as those waiting for the Third

Street bus. The people who used the booth during the spot check were surprised to learn that it was the busiest one in town. Mr. Welliver said that Route 220 traffic probably was the reason that more calls are made from that booth than any other. The phone company tries to spot the booths near parking lots where there is heavy pedestrian traffic. The Third and Campbell booth has neither of these advantages but still leads in the phone booth derby, even ahead of the phone outside the Bell office at Market and Edwin Streets, That booth runs a close second, thanks to its location on a street with many people walking by and with a parking lot opposite. In fact, people paying their telephone bills go in and out of the adjacent office all day long, so the booth is handy for any call they have to make while downtown.

I

begin with a confession. Yes, I did recently pen an article in which I discussed choices of rifles and calibers when it comes to deer hunting. And, yes, I sang the praises of a .260 caliber rifle and the 120-grain ballistic tip bullet it uses. The truth remains that I have, over the years, successfully taken a number of bucks and does using this combination. But, that was about to change. The episode begins as I lay out my equipment for a day’s hunt at the end of the first week of Pennsylvania’s antlered deer season this year. It is Thursday evening as I pack a lunch and a few snacks in preparation for an all-day hunt. I select my layers of hunting clothing for tomorrow and inspect my trusty .260 and seven of the 120-grain ballistic tip bullets to go with it. Satisfied that I am prepared for the hunt, I turn in for some shuteye before the early departure the next morning. Friday’s below freezing temperatures found me easing my way in the pre-dawn darkness to a place I had not yet hunted this season. I was headed to a remote location on State Game Lands, where I had done a good deal of pre-season scouting. Since the deer had become somewhat nocturnal in their eating once the regular firearms season had gotten underway, I wanted to spend the day deep in the forest. My destination was a ridge-top that was predominantly oak trees with numerous areas of heavy mountain laurel. The mountain laurel had shown to be prime bedding areas overlooking the hillside below, and the various species of oaks had been dropping a heavy crop

ground. Light was beginning to brighten the edge of the eastern skyline as I arrived on the top of the ridge and quickly went to the base of a fallen oak tree where I had planned to spend the day. The spot provided me a good vantage point overlooking a draw that ran from my left to right and several areas of thick laurel that the deer would likely use for bedding. As I scanned the ground, I could see that quite a few acorns from the nearby red oaks were still available for the squirrels and deer. It was almost 7:30 when the first deer appeared, as a doe and her two yearlings eased out of a patch of laurel 120 yards to my right. They were relaxed as they gobbled up acorns and slowly walked my way. Over the next half-hour, they were joined by a spike buck, then a 4-pointer and then another doe with two yearlings. As I watched them intently, the last two looked back toward the laurel, “a good sign,” I thought, hoping more deer would step out. Moments later, I caught the flash of antler inside the patch of laurel. The buck was very cautious and appeared to be reluctant to leave the cover and join the other deer. His movements were slow and deliberate, and at one point, as he eased through a small opening, he revealed himself to be a nice 8-pointer. Seconds later, a second buck appeared — he had a much heavier and wider rack, and as he slowly passed through the same opening, I could identify him as a really nice 11-pointer! The two stayed close together, protecting each other as they picked up the occasional acorn — still reluctant to leave the safety of their cover.

Over the next several hours, I walked the nearby woods looking for any sign but found none. I remained in the area for the rest of the day, hoping to hear crows or ravens or even coyotes signaling that they had found the buck. I headed home after dark, resigned to the reality that somehow, somewhere, a tree branch or an unseen branch of the laurel had deflected my bullet. I had learned the hard way that the highvelocity of the 120-grain bullet could all-tooeasily be deflected by an undetected branch — and it cost me the chance at the buck-of-alifetime. I might use the .260 in an open field setting but will never again trust it in a woods setting. Next time, I’ll carry my .300 Weatherby Magnum and use a 180-grain bullet! I wondered if I would ever see that buck again — probably not.

It was 8:15 when the two turned and began slowly, but deliberately, walking back deeper into the laurel. As they passed through an opening, the second buck, the 11-pointermade the mistake of stopping, providing what I thought was a clear broadside shot. I took a deep breath, exhaled, and then centered the crosshairs of the scope just behind his shoulder and gently squeezed the trigger. All of the deer scattered, and the two bucks disappeared through the thick cover. My hands began to shake a bit as I realized this was perhaps the nicest buck I had ever seen in our Pennsylvania woods! When I reached the 140yard distance to where he had stood, my heart began to sink. I found no sign that my bullet had hit its mark! I followed the two bucks behind the path of their upturned leaves, but still found no sign of a hit.

Outdoors with Ken Hunter…

Becoming One of the “Frozen Chosen”

I

guess the first question that many of my friends and acquaintances ask me is, “Why would anybody want to become one of the Frozen Chosen?” Believe it or not, the number of people who opt to walk the hard water in search of fish is actually increasing. Over the past couple of weeks, my ice fishing buddies and I have observed up to 80-100 people fishing in the same general area as us. In addition, we have had several people recently request to join our ranks. With this in mind, I have tried to write some pieces that would help the new ice angler break into the activity and have a positive experience.

Having already discussed basic ice safety and some tools of the trade, I think it’s a good idea to take a closer look at the actual fishing techniques. Like any kind of fishing, of course, there are any number of tools and techniques that will take an assortment of fish but for now, let’s zero in on catching panfish. Why panfish? Well, panfish are fun to catch, often they are willing winter feeders, and they taste great. They are also abundant, so you don’t have to feel bad about taking a bunch home on occasion. Probably the most common and likely the most productive way to take panfish

is with a small ice fishing jigging rod. Sure you can use tip-ups, and they can at times be very effective, especially for perch and crappies, but if the fish are active it’s hard to beat a jigging rod or two. There are a number of different ice fishing outfits available, including what look like Ken tiny spinning outfits, and Hunter they all probably work. While I have several different types of outfits, I still often find myself using a couple of rods that were made from the broken tips of old spinning outfits. A piece of old broom handle and a

MURRAY

cheap $3 plastic reel completed a couple of my favorite jigging rods. Whatever your choice of rod, it’s important that you don’t get too heavy with the line and other terminal gear. You’re fishing for panfish and some, like bluegills, have small mouths, so it’s important to keep your presentations small as well. While I may have four or six-pound line on the reel I always attach a length of two or three-pound test line at the end — a foot or two is about right. I like fluorocarbon — it’s nearly invisible underwater, so it’s less likely to spook fish. Your lure presentation should be small as well. There are a huge number of tiny ice jigs available with hook sizes in the 14 and 16, range and they come in a variety of colors including the “glow”

especially for crappies and perch, but they must be smaller for most bluegills. My typical set-up includes a fish finder in one hole and two more jigging holes within six inches and in front of the fish locator; I want to be able to see my presentations on the screen along with any fish that may be passing through. I move the lures up and down as necessary. I fish both with a bobber on occasion and often without any type of strike indicator depending entirely on feel. Sometimes it’s not a “hit” but rather a tightening of the line-strike immediately. Good luck if you are new to the activity and don’t be afraid to ask someone nearby for advice if needed — most ice fishermen are pretty friendly and helpful.

type jigs. I use a variety of colors including chartreuse and blaze orange. When attaching my jigs, I like to use two on each outfit — one at the terminal end and one where the fluorocarbon joins the line to my reel. With two jigs I can actually fish two different depths at the same time. On a few occasions, I have had fish on both jigs resulting in a double on a single rod. I highly recommend some kind of bait for ice fishing. I’m not saying you can’t catch fish without it, but I don’t want to be without it. While one of my favorites are wax worms; there are several others that are also good including mousies, mealworms, maggots and even worms from the garden. Almost any live, wiggly bug or critter will probably work. Minnows are also good

That is definitely one of my goals that I am working toward.” As for advice to current high schoolers with that scholarship dream, Bragalone’s advice is simple. “It is a long road, but anything is possible. Sometimes you might question yourself, and then something may happen to make it a reality, and that is a great feeling to achieve. An individual’s destiny is in their hands. It depends on what you are willing to do, and how much work you put into it, and how good you want to be. It is not going to be given to you, and if you really want it that bad, it takes a lot of hard work and dedication to the sport to get there.” Bragalone’s dreams and his reality crossed some bumpy roads, but the record-setting high school and collegiate running back has made his presence felt. And that folks is not ‘bragging.’

Outside of football, it was hard for me at the beginning. It was college, and I was used to high school, and I didn’t realize how much work college took to do well. My first semester was rough, but I got the hang of it and have been doing better each semester. It was an eye-opener for me, and at first, it was hard, but now I am pretty used to it. “I think that playing running back at a small high school was the main reason why I didn’t get more big college school offers. But that is hard to say because there are some athletes at small schools that are getting big college attention. The Fleming kid at Southern Columbia is getting a bunch of college offers, and he is only a sophomore. I’m not sure what it was that they didn’t like about me, but I don’t get upset about it because I’m at a school playing football and have had the opportunity to start since my freshman year. The 1,000-yard rushing seasons, being named All-Patriot League and AllAmerican are great accomplishments. I’m very proud of what I’ve done to get here and just have to keep working hard to get better and keep on playing. “Coming from a two-back offense in high school to a one back system in college was a tough adjustment for me to make. My first fall camp was very frustrating. I didn’t know what was going on. But luckily for me, our quarterback was a great teammate and leader. After practice, he would take me aside, talk to me and go over schemes. He helped me a lot to become the player I am now. It was hard at first, but looking back it wasn’t really that bad. It was just something new that I wasn’t used to. Pass protection and running routes were things I wasn’t used to doing. But now that I am able to

Sports are the Leading Cause of Youth Eye Injuries

ctive children have the advantage of being in good physical shape and keeping their weight in check. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say one in five children are considered overweight or obese, but being engaged in a sport or other activity promotes exercise, which can be a good thing for both physical and mental health. Although playing sports is beneficial for various reasons, there are some inherent risks to participating in them as well. Physical injuries, such as concussions and broken bones, can result from participating in sports. But perhaps surprisingly, eye injuries are quite

common among young athletes. Such injuries often do not get the attention with regard to prevention that statistics suggest they warrant. According to the National Eye Institute, eye injuries are the leading cause of blindness in children in America. Many eye injuries among school-aged children are attributed to sports. A study published in the journal JAMA Ophthalmology that was based on research from Johns Hopkins University, Harvard and other institutions found about 30,000 sports-related eye injuries are treated each year at emergency rooms participating in the Nationwide Emergency Department sample, which compiles information about

Players, parents and coaches must realize that, according to the Coalition to Prevent Sports Eye Injuries, 90 percent of sportsrelated eye injuries can be avoided with the use of protective eyewear. Protective eyewear is often made of strong polycarbonate, which is 10 times more impact-resistant than other plastics. All children who play sports should wear protective eyewear, warn sports medicine experts. However, currently many youth sports leagues do not require the use of such protection, making it the responsibility of parents and coaches to enforce this important safety protocol. Protecting eyes when playing sports is of paramount importance for athletes of all ages. More information about sports-related activities and protective eyewear is available at Vision Council of America.

millions of emergency room visits to more than 900 hospitals around the country. Data indicates that a large majority of these injuries occurred in people younger than 18, and a sizable number in children younger than 10. The situation is similar in Canada. “We believe that sports eye injuries are the largest cause of vision loss in children,” said Keith Gordon, vice-president of research at CNIB, a Toronto-based nonprofit that provides support services for the visually impaired. The NEI states that baseball is the sport responsible for the greatest number of eye injuries in children age 14 and younger. Basketball has the highest number of eye injuries for players between the ages of 15 and 24. Other sports that account for a high rate of eye injuries include softball, soccer and cycling.

ometimes, when you’re that good, it’s hard to find the next challenge. The goal has to change a bit as the next true moment of adversity might be days, weeks, or even months off. Good competitors find a way to stay sharp and focused in preparation for the next challenge. For Montoursville’s Gavin Hoffman, who has his goals set on a third consecutive individual state wrestling championship,

that challenge has presented itself to him as he prepares for larger goals. Last Thursday, Montoursville welcomed in Milton and Hoffman won his match in less than a minute, but tucked away in the win was a person geared to helping his team get better. “The season has been going as I predicted,” Hoffman said. “I go into the room and try not to focus on the next dual meet. I’m just trying to get better to be the best version of

give them a little knowledge on or an area they can improve on then I’ll let them know,” Hoffman said. “This is my last year year and I want to spread as much knowledge as I can. I want to feed off the team and give back as much as I can.” Gable Crebs, Montoursville’s 160-pound wrestler, has benefited from Hoffman’s influence. The two train together throughout the season and push each other. “He’s my main partner in the room,” Hoffman said. “We roll around every day and I don’t really teach as much I think he just picks things up through me wrestling with him. He’s definitely getting a lot better. In the room, he fights a lot.” One thing Hoffman is constantly challenged with is maintaining his cool against lesser opponents. Hoffman is a two-time defending State Champion; it’s only natural that he would face competition that might not be at the same level. Since this is something he deals with on a nightly basis, maintaining an even mental state is key to each and every performance. “You just have to keep a cool head out on the mat,” Hoffman said. “Keeping my composure is a huge thing for me. If I don’t get a pin in 20 seconds, I can’t start to freak out. I have to just tell myself the pin will come when it comes. I just have to keep a cool mind and just wrestle.” Between finding ways to stay challenged, helping teammates, and enjoying the ride, Hoffman has approached each and every situation with class and determination. It’s easy to see after just a few minutes of chatting with Hoffman why he’s reached such high levels of wrestling.

Hoffman Continues to Shine Throughout the Lead-up to His Third State Championship Run

myself I can be.” The best version of Hoffman might have the 195 field a little worried near the end of the winter season. Hoffman, through tireless hours of mat work, lifting weights, and studying other wrestlers, has carved out a big name for himself over the last two Brett years. Crossley The first Championship might have caught some people by surprise. The second certainly added to a growing reputation. His journey to a third will be well documented by coaches, media, and fans and Hoffman is fine with it. “It’s temping to look at states,” Hoffman said. “I’m hungry for my third state title.” States will happen in Hershey in March. Until then, Hoffman will have to find different ways to stay sharp. One way he’s tried to do that is helping other wrestlers on the team. “I get excited for the team’s matches,” Hoffman said. “I was excited when we went to Warrior Run. They are a good team, and we are a good team. I’m just trying to look at it one match at time and enjoy each and every moment.” Along with watching his team perform throughout the season, Hoffman has also taken some wrestlers aside to help them. He knows he has some amazing skills on the mat and doesn’t shy away from helping his teammates out. “I’ll make sure if there is something I can
