thank you for welcoming us into your home. It’s hard to believe that it’s been 15 years! Our distribution has grown to over 58,000 residences as we have now spilled into the counties adjacent to us. And boy do I get what my Dad was talking about with the postage bill. We spend an average of over $12,000 a week. Thank you to our clients who advertise. Many have been with us since the beginning. We value each and every relationship and consider ourselves a partner with you in business. We believe in doing business locally, and trying to keep revenue here at home. Thank you to all our readers that support the businesses that advertise in the Webb Weekly. At the end of the day, that’s what makes it all possible. I must also thank the United States Postal Service for all they do each and every week. I’m sure somebody knows the total number of Webb Weeklys delivered in the last 15 years, it has to be staggering. It has been a true team effort at the Webb Weekly, and I would like to thank all those over the years that contributed. A tip of the cap to all who have been part of a great group of writers. It’s always interesting to hear from folks who their favorite writer is and why. We have tried to provide a product everyone can read and enjoy, while also
contributing and making our communities better. The next serious meeting my Father, Carol, Michelle and I had at that counter in the Texas room was, unfortunately, the last; it was when he informed us what we feared that evening we first discussed the Webb Weekly. He left us shortly after that in October 2012. He will be forever missed. As well as Bill Byham, Rosemary Neidig, Tom Paternostro and Louise Ulmer. Again, thank you to all our readers and advertising clients. It has been a wonderful fifteen years, and we look forward to bringing you our family-oriented publication each and every week. If you have any ideas or suggestions, as always, please reach out to me. I too enjoy those conversations just like my Father. God Bless America.

anuary 22, 2003, we published the first issue of Webb Weekly. Our cover story was about the upcoming Super Bowl. Man, have we covered a lot since then. Going back through and looking at past issues this week has been a trip, to say the least. The people, places, events and more that we have covered over the years is impressive. I am so proud to be a part of an organization that cares so much about the people and places in our community. So in honor of our 15th anniversary, here are some stories that stuck out to me each year. You may remember others, these were the ones that stood out to me as I flipped through the old issues. 2003 – I know you would expect me to say that our first issue was the highlight of 2003, and it was special for sure, but I was caught by a story in our May 14, 2003 edition. It was a story by Webb staple Lou Hunsinger about the life of a band parent. Being a band parent isn’t an easy task. It’s a lot of work, travel and expense and it was nice to see the life of a band parent getting

highlighted! 2004 – It wasn’t a particular story that caught my attention, so much as a cover. It was the August 25, 2004 cover. The picture on Steph the cover is one I took. Nordstrom I remember it clearly. It’s a pic of a Little Leaguer who looks like he is swinging hard for the fences. I remember his nickname was ‘Biscuit’. I remember taking the picture with a tiny, FujiFilm camera. I think it had about four megapixels. That was the first Little League World Series that I covered and it set off a love of sports photography that I didn’t even know I had. I have gone on to get some really great shots at the Series, but that one will always be toward the top of my list. 2005 – March 23rd brought us a cover story about Nessie Whaley. Minister, businesswoman, speaker, fisherman and more, Mrs. Whaley was breaking gender stereotypes and doing whatever made her

happy before it was cool. Plus, her hats were amazing! 2006 – Ahhh yes. 2006. March 29, 2006 brought us what is probably the most popular Webb Weekly article to have ever been printed. Yes, I am talking about that famous April Fool’s joke that had folks thinking there really was a shark caught in the Susquehanna. Brought to you courtesy of China Neal and Ken Hunter, I still hear about this story today and I’m fairly sure Helmrich’s is still getting phone calls. 2007 – The issue date was October 31, 2007, but the adventure had happened the week before. One of my favorite articles that I have written for the paper was when I got to be a ‘firefighter’ for a day. The Williamsport Bureau of Fire invited local politicians and members of the media to a day-long event where we got to learn CPR, how to use the jaws of life, the use of other safety equipment and it finally culminated in actually being able to go in to a controlled ‘burning building’ in full turnout gear to put out a fire. 2008 – OK, I have to laugh a bit about this one. October 29, 2008, Mr. Webb was convinced that President Obama was going to increase taxes on firearms and ammunition 500%, force everyone to register their guns with the government (or face court-issued search warrants for your property) and also phase out the PA Game Commission. I am happy to see almost 10 years later that none of these have come to fruition.

2009 – On February 11, 2009 we celebrated Loyalsock Athletic Director and (West Branch and PA Hall of Fame member) Coach Ron ‘CI’ Insinger’s 700th basketball win. We would later go on to celebrate his 800th win, his selection to the PA State Hall of Fame and hopefully, we’ll celebrate win 900 in the future. 2010 – One of the more surprising Webb Weekly pieces appeared on the cover of the February 24, 2010 edition. This piece, written by Karen Shaffer, discussed the emerging (and now ongoing) problem of female bullies. Nicknamed “Lip Gloss Bullies”, Karen discussed the non-violent, but equally damaging ways girls bully each other in a world fueled by online victimization and verbal threats. 2011 – July 29, 2011 Saw Ken Hunter foreshadowing the future. That week he wrote an article featuring then 18-yearold ‘Top Gun’ Morgan Craft. The third to last sentence noted that Craft’s ultimate goal was to represent the US in the Olympics. In 2016 Morgan, along with fellow Sullivan County Native Josh Richmond, would head to Rio to compete in the Summer Olympic Games. 2012 – There is not much more to say
about 2012 than this is the year we lost Mr. Webb. He was the patriarch of our Webb Weekly family and we miss him dearly. We are all thankful for the opportunity he gave us with the paper and we all do our best to make him proud each and every week. 2013 – We were a little late, but February 27, 2013 brought us our 10th Anniversary special. Much like this issue, it was filled with memories and nice words from our advertisers. 2014 – March 19, 2014 kicked off our series of stories on the heroin epidemic in our area. We talked about the issue with several local experts including police officers, the DA, the coroner, the Mayor, local judges and more. Each gave a unique perspective into the problem and each had solutions that would hopefully stem the flow of heroin into the area. Unfortunately, the heroin issue is still rampant in the county and surrounding areas today, but hopefully we can continue to work together as a community, city, state and country to stop heroin. 2015 & 2016 – I am going to cheat a little bit here and cover two years with one extended story. In July 2015, Jimmy

myself a year, let me go ahead and add this. I have heard some complaints about the Chief ’s location. Given, his location may not be as prominent as it once was, but remember a couple of things. One, he is safe and protected from the elements and easily accessible to anyone who wants to see him. Two, given that the alternative for the Chief was a literal wood chipper, I think we should all be thankful for the hard work volunteered by all to make sure we still have this amazing piece of art history in our city. 2017 – Since by now we all know that I love to tout all of the things that are happening in our great area, I think my favorite pieces of 2017 were the back-toback April 26th/May 3rd issues covering
the histories, presents and futures of the Pajama Factory and First Friday in the City. There is so much, art, culture, music and fun to be had at both and it was nice to be able to give each the recognition they deserve. As you can see, we have covered a lot of ground over the years, and we continue to do our best to bring you all of the things that are happening in the area and the fantastic people who live here. While we reflect on the past of Webb Weekly, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention
the members of the Webb Weekly family we have lost through the years. Louise Ulmer, Rosemary Neidig, Tom Paternostro and the Lefthander himself, Bill Byham were all welcome contributors to Webb through the years. We appreciate all that they did for the paper and will always consider them Webb Weekly Family. Here’s to 15 years of Webb Weekly and here’s to 50 more. Thank you to our readers and advertisers for sticking with us through the years and always supporting us.

set out to save Chief Woapalanne, beloved protector of Brandon Park. See, Chief ‘Knock-a-Homer’, as Jimmy likes to call him, had deteriorated to the point of being dangerous and had been removed from his post at the top of the park. Jimmy knew he had to do something and started a looooong chain of phone calls to save the Chief. Thanks to his connections and the hard work of Brian Flynn and Dave Stably from Penn College, along with assists from everyone from Vince Matteo, Bill Nichols and more, the Chief was able to be restored and find a new, permanent home behind the new Trade and Transit Center downtown. We featured the Chief ’s big reveal on September 14, 2016 cover. Since I have the opportunity and I’m saving

hey say life is a matter of compromise. Or, as you’ll see, trade-offs. Read this and decide which ones to keep and which ones to go without. Have your cake and eat it too? Only if you reside in Dubai, have ice for blood, or were born in a crib full of four-leaf clovers. Our former cat was a non-affectionate,
independent, gray flabby tabby. He slept by himself and ate quite a bit, but in his defense didn’t torpedo the house to bits and pieces. The new cat, imitating white lightning, will follow you around like a lost dog, but uses my parents’ home as a 24/7 scratching post and Gymboree. He enjoys knocking paperweights onto the floor, clinging by claws onto

wall frames as they crash to the floor with him attached, and vaulting up drapes that only SpiderMan could pull off. All with a Cheshire grin. We do this, and it could be jail time. Or at the very least a mental evaluation. Yet, when he reboots Gerry and goes into a docile Ayers mood when he decides to lick your nose and curl up next to you on the couch or in bed and shares his heat on a frigid day, all is right with the world. Or should I say the furniture? You tend to look past the shredded wallpaper and broken glass and enjoy the purr and warm fur. Don’t forget the big eyes as they look up to you, and the paw that touches your hand. Trade-offs aren’t just with humans! Then there’s Dave, a coworker. Not to be confused with the Dave you heard on the radio spot who butts heads with the “employee of the month.” This is a real Dave. Anyway, back when men were men and women were women, Dave bought a black 1970 Pontiac GTO off the showroom floor. Four-hundred motor with ram air induction. The same one he traded in a few years later for a tugboat Ford Thunderbird that couldn’t get out of its own way. No comparison. Muscle car versus luxury car. Dave wishes he could get his
GTO back. But in his case, he traded off a metal maiden for Mediterranean missions. A nicely restored 1970 GTO will set you back between $35k and $55k, (non-Judge). With no garage, and a wife to appease, he has put his play money into cruises. He’s gone on dozens and dozens of ocean liners, which could have easily bought a really nice goat (GTO nickname). Some guys trade warm breezes and on deck shuffleboard for four-wheeled delight and investment. Speaking of spouses or “significant others,” yours has some nasty habits you secretly (or not) deplore. You put up with nondiscretionary spending, snoring that could wake the dead, misplacing your slippers or favorite sweatshirt, running out of juice or toothpaste and not replacing it in a timely fashion, leaving dirty dishes and silverware for the “next in line” to clean. But the trade-off may be some fine Cajun cooking, an unexpected day trip, and a big smile and hug when you least expect it. Those big peepers that look up to you. The hand that reaches for yours. Wait — that was the cat! Others may disagree. Especially on flurry filled nights when they aren’t home by 2:00 a.m. Missing in action. Did you call the bar? Need warmth, on the cheap? Refer back to paragraph number four. The cat will trade food for rubs, and high body temps any day of the week.

JADED EYE
Just hide the china and family heirlooms you don’t want to be imploded. You don’t dig the boss? Tough. He signs your paycheck. If you want to survive, you’ll appreciate his bottom line. Trade-off? You decide. Work is better than walking the streets. Tolerate his demonic demeanor. Well, at least till you find something better! Your car, yes your transportation, is a mobile trade-off of sorts. There is a major, nerve-racking constant clunk coming from the front wheel well. But, the vehicle provides fast and constant heat. The rear window casing rattles like a tambourine, but the radio and CD player rock on. Thus, you can sing on the way home from work and forget about the bad boss. The side mirror won’t adjust, but your driver seat does. See what I mean? It’s always one or the other. Your neighbors’ burner barrel habits are clogging your lungs and soiling your siding, his dilapidated wooden fence and overgrown thorn bushes are eyesores, and their metallic wind chimes give you migraines. However, I am proud of you — keeping your mouth shut through all
of it. Trade-off? Lest we not forget, Ralph, changed the oil and filter on your clunker during a sweltering day, his wife Margie makes you banana bread on your birthday, and his kids Brandon and Kelsey are harmless playmates for your own offspring. Well done, showing restraint in return for kindness. (But maybe you can remind him he can recycle old papers and cardboard instead of burning them!) Some things should NEVER be traded off on. Your health matters most. Poor working conditions or stress isn’t worth it. Family and friends come next. How do you trade-off for people you love and cherish? Lastly, don’t be stripped of your faith and beliefs. Take that away, and you’re left with an empty soul and no fortitude. Life isn’t like trading football or baseball cards. Much more to it — even in simplified form. Perhaps you can chime into the Webb Facebook page and share some trade-offs you have experienced — good or bad. Maybe I will peek. Then again, a power walk beckons. Decisions, decisions, decisions.

Gazette and Bulletin January 22, 1948 Eradication of Gabling Sought Compiled by Lou Hunsinger Jr.
A
resolution, which calls on law enforcement officers of Williamsport and Lycoming County to eradicate gambling in Williamsport, was adopted Wednesday night by the executive committee of the Council of Churches of Williamsport and vicinity. The action was taken upon the recommendation of the Standing Committee on Christian Social Action, which reported to the executive body. A. Monroe Hall, council president said. Copies of the resolution are being forwarded to Mayor Leo C. Williamson, the city council, Sheriff Joseph Schmucker and District Attorney Lee B. Lansberry.
The resolution grows out of the City Council’s proposal to levy a 10 percent on all gross receipts of clubs and fraternities. The Committee on Christian Action expressed the belief that the bulk of such revenues would be derived from operation of slot machines, which are illegal in Pennsylvania. Mr. Hall said the church body does not attack the legality of a law taxing clubs and fraternities nor does it attempt to infringe on City Council’s right to levy taxes. But it does ask for enforcement of laws against gambling since the proposed tax legislation so strongly indicates the presence of gambling activities in Williamsport. The executive committee also received a report from its finance committee and authorized the preparation of a budget for 1948.

Looking Back With Pride My 15 Years At Webb Weekly By Lou Hunsinger Jr.
lication when it started. “Let us avoid printing those things that are calculated to distort the minds of our readers and make them feel at odds with the world. Let us do nothing that will encourage fear, worry, temptation, and other forms of human weakness. Let us make every issue ring with the joy bells of life. Let us give the readers courage and strength for their daily tasks, and let us try to bring happy thoughts, good cheer, and contentment in their hearts.” Jim Webb said that he always wanted to start a weekly newspaper that would have many of the same positive qualities as the Sunday Grit. As Webb Weekly moves into its 16th year of
I
t is hard to believe that it was 15 years ago that Webb Weekly began publishing. Being part of those 15 years gives me a lot of pride and satisfaction. I could never have believed that the Webb Weekly experience that has been such a positive part of my life would be still going after all of these years. The founder and publisher of Webb Weekly the late, Jim Webb Sr. inaugurated this paper in January 2003. His reason and philosophy for doing so could just as easily be summarized as the same as that expressed by Dietrick Lamade, founder of the Grit for his new pub-

existence — it does so with gusto — succeed Grit. “I believe in this country we have gotten away from the local, family-owned newspapers that were more finely attuned to the needs of the local community,” Webb once said. “I think that we have largely succeeded in bringing the homey quality of a paper like Grit back to life that celebrates the accomplishment, hopes, and triumphs of people as well as putting out a publication that is good for people of all interests.” Jim Webb Sr., and now his son, Jim Jr., have provided me a wonderful opportunity to share my writing skills with the people of this area and for this, I am very grateful. I have had the pleasure of working with some excellent editors at Webb from Robin Van Auken to Mike Rafferty to now, Steph Nordstrom. They have afforded me a wide berth to write about a wide variety of interesting people and events. As many of you might have noticed, history, particularly local history, is a special passion of mine and Webb Weekly has afforded me a great opportunity to present stories about this to our readers. Some favorites of this type include my story about the Imperial automobile, the car manufactured in Williamsport. I also enjoyed writing about Katie Knight, the first woman mortician in Lycoming County. This woman pioneer was very interesting to write about. John Anderson, a former Williamsporter, who took some breathtaking photographs of the Sioux and Lakota Indians in the late 19th century, proved to be another very interesting story for me. The story of Jack Ernst, the quarterback of
the 1925 Pottsville Maroons football team, was one of the most interesting sports-related stories that I have done. One of the most enjoyable, historically themed, stories I have done, occurred just last year when I interviewed “President Abraham Lincoln.” I asked questions just as they might have been asked during Lincoln’s lifetime and the man who portrayed Mr. Lincoln, James Getty, at a presentation at the Thomas Taber Museum answered them as Lincoln would during his lifetime. This provided me with a rich insight into the character of the “Great Emancipator,” and made me appreciate the film “Lincoln” that much more. I have written about people who were a part of history. In November 2003 I wrote about an area man who served as the Air Force representative on the casket team for President Kennedy’s funeral during those dark days of November 1963. I also wrote about another area man, Tom Kline, who served in the Marine Corps with Kennedy’s assassin, Lee Harvey Oswald. One of the most interesting people who was a part of history was the late Joe Lockard, who tried to warn of the incoming Japanese planes during the Pearl Harbor attack. I interviewed him in 2011 for the 70th anniversary of that attack, not long before he died. In 2014, I did a story on U.S. Navy Captain “Pete” Tzomes, who had the historic distinction of being the first African-American to command a U.S. Navy nuclear submarine, the U.S.S. Houston. Not only did he describe his naval experiences, but he also detailed the struggles of growing up as an African-American in Williamsport during the 1950s and 60s. In the sports realm, my favorite story was

ANNIVERSARY my account of the Williamsport Crosscutters winning the New York-Penn League championship against the Brooklyn Cyclones in Brooklyn in 2003. As a rabid Crosscutters fan, I was thrilled to the core to be on hand for this joyous, historical occasion. I have also written various articles that have celebrated the accomplishments of athletes from various sports, including several state and national championships. I have been able to write various nostalgic stories that looked back on former places, people and times in our past. Several of these stories come to mind. In 2010 I wrote a story that recalled the former Village Tea Room and their delicious sticky buns through an interview with Barry Edmonds, who worked
there and later ran the establishment in its final years. One of the first major stories I did for Webb Weekly was in the March 5, 2003, issue and was about Bob and Dean McNett. Probably no one in the past 50 years or so has touched so many lives locally as Bob and Dean McNett. They did this through their “Radio Corral” on WRAK, as well as hosting their shows that featured some of the top country and western acts of the time. Lou Johnson, one of the last home delivery milkmen anywhere, was a wonderful and nostalgic story for me and no doubt it probably struck a chord with his many customers. That story ran in our August 31, 2005 issue. Some of the stories I have had the most fun
Labor & Employment Law
in writing were stories about people who were legends and perhaps institutions in this area. My story about the late, Fred Plankenhorn, “a spinner of the oldies” since the late 50s when they weren’t oldies was a lot of fun for me to do. I understand that it brought back a lot of good memories for people who attended dances where Fred and his compatriot, Kerby Confer played music. One of our area’s musical legends, Sammy Ray, was the subject of another article in January 2006. He brought smiles to many faces during his 80-plus years of musicianship. A man who recorded many smiles with his camera, and also was the lens of the Little League World Series, “the late “Putsee” Vannucci, was another fun and interesting story for me in August 2007. My story about local radio personality Gary Chrisman in March of 2006 gave me a lot of pleasure. And speaking of Gary, I did a story in 2012 on his memories of former Monkee, Davy Jones. That was a story I found very interesting because I idolized Jones and the Monkees during their heyday, 1966-1968. I very much enjoyed doing a story on the multi-talented Lena Yeagle, in 2012. She is a very talented musician and artist, and she is a roller derby queen. In December 2004 I had the privilege of writing about my father, in a story titled, “A Son’s Tribute To His Father.” It highlighted his long life of service to others, and I was glad to do it, but it is difficult to write about things that involve yourself and others close to you.
On a related note, I wrote a story about my dad and his brothers, John and Skip and their role as volunteer ushers at the Community Arts Center. I hope through that article I was able to shine a light on all the dedicated people who act as ushers at the CAC. I have a real soft spot in my heart for a story I wrote in October 2009 of Bobbie Joe Lamey, a waitress at the Pit Stop restaurant in Clinton County. She performed her work from a wheelchair, cheerfully and with enthusiasm. She said her goal in life is to be an inspiration to others — she already is. I guess the one thing I am really grateful for is that the people at Webb allowed me the opportunity to write tributes about several people that I believe were notable to me. I was able to write a tribute to my friend “Honey” Person, and local historians Richard and Miriam Mix and the one I did about our beloved “Old Lefthander,” Bill Byham. The tribute I am most grateful for is the one I was allowed to do for my beloved wife, Mary after she died of leukemia in July 2014. It was very healing for me to be able to express my grief so openly and it really helped me through those dark days. Speaking of my dear Mary, I believe firmly that she continues to help me move my pen in hand across the paper as I write my stories. I guess it would be more accurate to say she moves my fingers across the computer keyboard. Mary, you are the light of my life, and my inspiration and your light has never really gone out for me.

ell, it’s official. The results are finally in. Our beloved Loyalsock Creek was recently named the 2018 Pennsylvania River of the Year. Hooray! The general public voted online. They chose from five other nominated waterways from across the state. The Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) and the Pennsylvania Organization for Waterways and Rivers (POWR) made the announcement a few weeks back. Winner. Winner. Chicken dinner. Sweet! Loyalsock outplayed and outlasted the competition by receiving 6,100 of the 15,061 casted votes. Thanks to those who logged in to help secure the title. Connoquenessing Creek finished second with 5,381 tallies. I’m sure she’s just as pretty, but good luck trying to spell her. The Lackawanna River over near Scranton took third, and the Lower Susquehanna Riverlands was a distant fourth. The Little Juniata only scored 791 votes. Better luck next year kids. Perhaps you should try paying people to share your statuses. The DCNR and the POWR will work with the Middle Susquehanna RIVERKEEPERs to create a commemorative poster celebrating this
fine achievement. The RIVERKEEPERs, who nominated and backed the Sock, will also receive a $10,000 Leadership Grant to help fund River of the Year activities. This is grand. “The Pennsylvania River of the Year truly showed the depth of the region’s ‘Loyalsock Love,’” Middle Susquehanna RIVERKEEPER Czar Carol Parenzan said. “We are grateful to those who voted, and we thank our partner — the Loyalsock Creek Watershed Association — for its unending commitment and unlimited loyalty to this precious waterway. “In the past, Loyalsock Creek was a hidden gem,” Parenzan continued. “And with this recognition and award, we are ready to share this timeless treasure with the rest of Pennsylvania and beyond.” The name Loyalsock is from an old Indian phrase “LAWI-SAQUICK” meaning the middle creek since it flows between Muncy and Lycoming. It begins in Wyoming County and ends in nearby Montoursville, where it flows into the West Branch of the mighty Susquehanna. This majestic 64-mile watershed of North Central PA is home to thousands of anglers, paddlers, and other outdoor enthusiasts. I have spent a great deal of time enjoying the Sock and what she has to offer. One of my best buds had a cabin outside of
Barbours where we would spend hours and hours fishing for monster browns. Now I sometimes take an afternoon drive up PA Route 87 just for fun, and Jensen’s favorite place to hike is the beautiful 780 acres of World’s End State Park. You might find me in my kayak during the dog days of summer. I often stop at Pier 87 for a quick brew. Occasionally, my family will even join me for dinner by the creek. I only paddle downstream and sometimes have to hitchhike. I have yet to find a vista along Loyalsock Creek that won’t disappoint. The entire landscape of this magnificent waterway is simply gorgeous. I can vividly remember those dark days in the September of 2011. Many residents and businesses were absolutely devastated by that flash flood. But our homes, buildings, and bridges have since been rebuilt. It has been a very long process, and hopefully, this announcement will continue to boost. Loyalsock Creek is now the 2018 Pennsylvania River of the Year, and I am absolutely ecstatic. This is a major win kids, and I am very thankful to those who continue to graciously preserve. A quick shout to my friends at the Middle Susquehanna RIVERKEEPERs. Likewise
to my mates of the Loyalsock Creek Watershed Association. Major props to Dr. Mel Zimmerman and Lycoming College’s Clean Water Institute. Much love folks. Congratulations and thanks for all that you do. To learn more about the River of the Year program, the nominated waterways, and past winners, please visit www. pariveroftheyear.org. Cheers.

The Bookworm Sez By Terri Schlichenmeyer The Garden of Small Beginnings” by Abbi Waxman c.2017, Berkley $16.00 / $22.00 Canada 353 pages
Y
ou almost can’t believe your Mom saved them. File upon file, chronologically ordered, neatly preserved, every drawing you ever did, from the time you could hold a crayon until the day you graduated. Senseless scribbles,
things that hung on the refrigerator, she saved them all. And, as in the new novel, “The Garden of Small Beginnings” by Abbi Waxman, you wish she’d saved that sense of innocence, too. Lili Girvan’s husband, Dan, was a good listener. He never argued, he let her gripe, never blamed her for anything, never told her what to do. That was probably because he was dead and cremated, but never mind. It had been years since he was killed on the street in front of their house, practically in their kitchen. Claire was a
baby then, and Annabel was three. Now they’re both in grade school, and Lili still misses Dan. She misses him so much that she can sometimes barely stand upright. What’s curious is that everybody seems to want to play matchmaker. Lili’s sister, Rachel, keeps trying to trick Lili into dating. Friends give Lili that “isn’t he hot?” look when they see a guy checking her out. Her daughters probably wouldn’t mind if she dated, and Lili’s inlaws tell her that Dan would want her to be happy. She doesn’t know what would make her happy. That’s the problem. And so Lili goes to work, where she’s an illustrator for textbooks, a job she loves. She’s also been hired to illustrate a series of books on flowers, vegetables, and gardening in general and, to give the L.A. City Girl somewhat of an idea of the hobby, Lili’s boss asks her to take a gardening class. It sounds like fun, and six Saturday mornings is no sacrifice, especially when she has nothing else to do. Annabel, Claire, and Rachel want to learn to garden, too, so Lili signs them all up. It would be interesting to see how
food is grown. It would be fun to see how flowers are grown. Lili never thinks she’d grow, herself… When you head out to find ‘The Garden of Small Beginnings,” be sure to pick up some painkillers, too. You’ll need them. Your face will hurt from smiling so hard while you’re reading this book. The most appealing main character ever, hands-down, has total control of author Abbi Waxman’s story: Lili is sassy, sarcastically funny, down-to-earth, and so faux-confident. Waxman nicely and fittingly drags that aching angst out: between childcare issues, job stresses, and her wildly inappropriate (but hilarious) sister, Lili becomes someone readers can identify with, and will want to know better. Also of interest: there’s a tantalizing, not-completely-told mentalhealth issue in the story, complete with a no-nonsense therapist who makes brief appearances. Despite its underlying theme of sadness, this isn’t a book that will leave you unhappy; in fact, there’s plenty of joy here, some profanity (beware!), and enough humor to make it all fun. Start “The Garden of Small Beginnings,” and see how fast you’re drawn in.

hose of us who grew up in the outlying boroughs and townships of Lycoming County in the 1960s and 70s remember traveling to Williamsport for shopping and entertainment and passing miles and miles of farmland along the route. But as the world changed, so did Lycoming County. Children of farmers decided they wanted to go into other lines of work, and the family farm slowly declined. When the farmers were offered handsome prices by developers for their land, it was too much to resist. Townships that were in need of tax revenue followed suit by making the necessary rezoning, and slowly but surely, the landscape changed from a reflection of nature to monuments of enterprise. This same scenario happened all over America, and especially in Pennsylvania, which had great numbers of local farms. So it was, in 1988, the Farmland Preservation Program was established to curb the conversion of prime farmland to non-agricultural uses and the loss of productive farm soils. Our state lawmakers are often maligned for sloppy legislating, but they showed amazing insight 30 years ago. To fund the program they set up, they used cigarette tax revenue as the most significant source of dedicated funding for farmland preservation in Pennsylvania. Thanks to this vice that so many enjoy, approximately $20.5 million is available for
the ag preservation program annually. It is this access to a steady source of matching funding that is a key reason Pennsylvania’s farmland preservation program has been so successful. In fact, Pennsylvania is the national leader in farmland preservation. In addition to saving the land necessary for food production, it has encouraged soil and water conservation and maintained the rural heritage of communities. Since 1989, the program has purchased easements on more than 5,000 farms, permanently preserving more than 530,000 acres, in some 57 counties in the Commonwealth. Lycoming County participates in this program through the Conservation District office directed by Mark Davidson. Mr. Davidson made a presentation at the County Commissioners Meeting on January 11th to seek approval of the 2018 Certification of Funds for the Agricultural Preservation Program. It is the purpose of this program to protect viable agricultural land by acquiring conservation easements in perpetuity to prevent the development of the land for any purpose other than agricultural production. The 2018 funding would provide $332,000 for easement purchases of land in the county, much of the funding coming from the Commonwealth. Mr. Davidson gave a good summary and history of the program to the commissioners at their work session meeting on January 9th. Lycoming County has participat-
ed almost as soon as the Commonwealth initiated it by appointing a seven-member Board in October of 1990 to develop a farmland preservation plan. After almost a year of work, this plan was submitted to the State Agricultural Land Preservation Board for approval, which was done in 1992. Since that time, the Conservation District has served as the conduit by processing the applications, and the subsequent approval then comes from the county’s State Agricultural Land Preservation Board. Currently, there are 74 easements preserving over 9,000 acres of County farmland for future generations. Everyone benefits greatly from this program. First, the pressure upon the family farm has been significantly weakened. Like all other industries, technological advancements have made operations more efficient. But these advances cost money, and the local farmer simply could not compete against the major agricultural combines with the latest and greatest equipment. When it cost a local farmer more money to produce a gallon of milk or a carton of eggs than they could sell it for, there is no hope to keep the farm going. But through this program, the farmer

Hall of Fame and Sports Walk Honorees Inducted at Crosscutters’ Hot Stove League Banquet By Lou Hunsinger Jr.
T
his year’s annual Williamsport Crosscutters Hot Stove League Banquet will have a new wrinkle to it when it is held Wednesday, January 24 at the Genetti Hotel and Convention Center. The event is presented in part by Panda Patriot Power, River Valley Transit, WRAK 1400AM, and the Williamsport Sun-Gazette. Since 2009 the Hot Stove League Banquet has been the occasion in which the latest honoree
to the Bowman Field Hall of Fame has been inducted. That continues this year. But new this year will be the honoring of three individuals who made significant and lasting contributions to the sporting scene of Lycoming County through the “Williamsport Sports Walk.” The newest Bowman Field Hall of Fame inductee will be Bill Nichols Jr. Nichols, who serves as the Finance Director for the City of Williamsport and General Manager of River Valley Transit, has been instrumental in over $4 million in recent renovations to Bowman Field
and was the city representative to Major League Baseball for the debut of the MLB-Little League Classic last August. I can tell you from my personal experience as chairman of the Bowman Field Commission that Bill has been a key figure in finding creative ways to finance the many fine and needed renovations that have been made to the venerable uptown ballpark. He worked with diligence and efficiency to find state and other funding sourc-
es to make all work to the field possible. From my perspective, he is indeed a worthy member of the Bowman Field Hall of Fame. The banquet will also feature the announcement of three additional members of the Williamsport Sports Walk sponsored by River Valley Transit — former stock car driver Blaise Alexander Jr., long-time Little League President Dr. Creighton Hale, and Williamsport sports promoter Bill Pickelner, who spent over 50

headed up the Nine-County Baseball Boosters Association that oversaw professional baseball affairs here for a number of years. He is the man that persuaded Paul Velte, owner of the Geneva (NY) Cubs, to Williamsport, where they have since become the Crosscutters. Pickelner’s stewardship and advocacy of Bowman Field were legendary during his 50 years of service on the Bowman Field Commission, serving as chairman of that Commission for many years. Dr. Creighton Hale was a trailblazer in the field of athletic safety and would go on to serve as President and CEO of Little League Baseball International Inc. It was a labor of love for him. I have many fond memories of casually talking with Dr. Hale during some of my downtimes as press box announcer at Volunteer Stadium during the Little League World Series. It was always interesting to hear his stories and anecdotes about his days at the LLB helm. Guests at this year’s event include two former Phillies from the 1993 National League Championship team — second baseman Mickey Morandini and relief pitcher Mitch “Wild Thing” Williams. A portion of the proceeds from the event will benefit Original League in Williamsport, the birthplace of Little League Baseball. The evening will consist of a full-course dinner, along with interviews and question and answer segments with the special guests. There will also be both live and silent auctions of sports memorabilia.

years as chairman of the Bowman Field Commission. The Sports Walk’s mission is to honor and recognize individuals from Lycoming County who have positively affected their communities through sports and athletics. Its focus is individuals who have achieved professional status, excelled in amateur athletics, and/or improved the lives of others through coaching, volunteerism, and the advancement of local athletics. The Williamsport Sports Walk debuted in 2016 in downtown Williamsport with 20 honorees. I had the privilege of having known two of this year’s honorees, Bill Pickelner and Dr. Creighton Hale. Bill was a giant on the local sports scene. He was an avid fan and supporter of all things sports. He was the one-time owner of Williamsport’s professional basketball team, the Williamsport Billies, who competed in the old Eastern Basketball League, which would see many of its players and coaches excel and play in the National Basketball League. The softball team that he sponsored in the local softball leagues, the “Picklener Coalers,” were some of the best softball teams ever seen in this area. His first love may have been his beloved Bowman Field, and seeing all of the professional baseball teams that played on its grass over the years. He was a spark plug for keeping professional baseball flourishing here as the man who

Outfits, Not Just Clothes…
Midwinter Wardrobe Remix
T
echnically, we have not yet reached the midwinter season, but I’m sure all of us are pretty much done with the cold, ice, and snow at this point. However, no matter how “over it” we feel, we still must endure another 2-3 months of winter weather. So, now is a good time to take inventory of your wardrobe to review, reorganize, and restore your cold weather gear. Now, while it may seem frivolous to do a closet cleanout at this time, it’s really a matter of function. Taking stock of sweaters for holes, coats that need to be cleaned, tights with runs, and finding space for any new items from the holidays,
are very practical reasons why now is the perfect time for a wardrobe remix. Like any closet cleanout, you want to have a plan of attack. I like to start with sweaters, checking each piece for holes, tears, pilling, and those that have lost their shape. Those that can be repaired I set aside, those that are beyond hope I toss, and those I’m just plain sick of/no longer fit go to the donation/yard sale bin. Yes, winter seems like an odd time to start thinking about your summer yard sale, but if you have the space to store your “inventory,” you’ll save yourself some work come June.

It doesn’t really matter how you start a midwinter clothing cleanout. The point is to assess your cold weather garments to see which pieces need attention. Now is a great time to get your overcoat to the dry cleaners for a midseason refresh. Also, when was the last time you Bernadette washed those snow pants? Ulsamer How are your winter socks holding up? Don’t forget to check in on your hats, gloves, and scarves. If you can repair things, great. If not, get rid of them and buy replacements. There are great deals on winter wear out there, as stores want to make room for spring inventory. If you are feeling ambitious, you can also reorganize your closet to see you through the rest of the winter by putting your heaviest pieces up front and moving those mid-weight items towards the back. Also, set aside pieces that aren’t fitting at the moment. Whether from too much holiday ham or because your January detox is going gangbusters, garments that are too small or too big need to be taken out of your rotation. This doesn’t mean you won’t wear these pieces in the future, just that, for now,
set them aside, so they don’t take up space for clothes that do fit. Regardless of fit, or condition, there may be pieces you are just sick of wearing — looking at you, gray turtleneck! If so, pack them away, then take some of that Christmas money and treat yourself to a purple or printed turtleneck! Again, there are major sales going on, and cold-weather clothes are deeply discounted. Sometimes, a style boost is just the thing to see you through these next two months of dreary days and slick sidewalks. Speaking of fit, if you have growing kids in your home, you should definitely check in on their winter apparel. Make sure boots, jeans, jackets — all of it — still fits with enough room to see them through the season. Don’t forget hand-me-downs! One child’s too-small flannel is another child’s new favorite shirt. Well, maybe not favorite, but hey, if it’s warm and it fits, it’s new-tothem! Lastly, start a list of things they’ll need for the spring. Keep in mind school activities like field trips and sports. Hopefully, taking a winter inventory of your clothes won’t be too much of a chore, will free up some space in your closet, and help you survive the rest of the cold season. If you are in need of new apparel but have a tight budget, don’t forget that thrift stores are also a great resource.

I
was sick. I wasn’t suffering from nausea or some variety of the flu, instead it was that knot in the pit of your stomach you get when something has happened that twists your mind all up with negative thoughts and you just can’t stop thinking about it. I cursed myself for having missed the shot at a buck-of-a-lifetime and I relived the event over and over, never being satisfied with the ending. It was early morning when I took a crack at the big buck standing in an opening in the laurel patch. There was absolutely no sign that the deer had been hit, but I tracked it in the dried leaves for a good distance, and then walked a zigzag pattern for hours hoping to find some evidence that my aim had been true and the bullet had reached the deer. The more I thought about it, the more apparent it became that the bullet had deflected on its way to the target. For the rest of the day, I remained in the area where I had taken the shot, hoping that the raucous call of a crow or raven or the yipping of a coyote would signal that they had found the deer, but that signal never came. For the next two days I hiked back to that same spot at dawn and stayed until
dark, with dwindling hopes that I would ever see him again. Nonetheless, I had made up my mind that I would not shoot at another buck, but would hold out for him — even though the chances were slim that he had remained in the area after being shot at. On the third day, I was unable to hunt, and on the fourth, heavy rains fell throughout the entire day. It was good that the location had been left alone for a couple of days and after the all-day rain and clearing skies throughout the night, the deer would no doubt be up and feeding in the morning. Perhaps — and it was a long shot — the 11-pointer might have returned to his old bedding area and feeding grounds. This time I arrived before daybreak carrying my .330 Weatherby Magnum, using 180-grain Barnes-X bullets! If I was lucky enough to cross paths with that buck again, I wanted a cartridge that would make it through some brush if need be. It was well past dawn when I heard movement in the leaves and sighted a doe and her two yearlings emerging from the laurel, heading out to feed on the fallen acorns. She seemed nervous, and it wasn’t long until she picked up my scent and went scurrying out of sight, followed by her two offspring. A long 30 minutes went by

Several times, the second of the two glanced back toward where they had come from — sometimes indicating that more deer would follow. Fifteen minutes later, another deer appeared moving cautiously through the brush toward the yearlings. My back stiffened when I saw the flash of antler, and then I gasped when I realized it was the 11-pointer. He walked normally, cautiously nearing the opening the yearlings had reached. It really was him! I couldn’t believe I was seeing him for a second time! The crosshairs settled just behind his shoulder as he reached the clearing and I very gently squeezed the trigger. I watched in astonishment as the buck crumbled dead in his tracks! Gathering my footing, I raced to the deer as he lay motionless. I stood near him in amazement. He truly was a magnificent buck — the largest I had ever taken in Pennsylvania, both in body size and antler mass. He was a 140-class buck that weighed in excess of 190 pounds! Fortunately, I was able to solicit the aid of

often a strike is nothing more than that slight line movement in the ice hole. Another way to help pick up these very light, almost imperceptible, hits is to rig your jigging rod with one of catch of those extended Nice bluegills with some springs that fit onto the tip of crappies and perch thrown in. your rod; the very light spring or wire reacts to even the slightest take. If you are using a bobber use a small one to help detect the lightest hits; sometimes it’s nothing more than a slight wiggle of the bobber that signals one of those hard to catch bluegills. The bottom line is, bluegills do feed readily during the winter months — the trick is learning to detect or pick up those super light takes. Master that and you will have some great fish dinners as a reward.

the summertime, but more often than not, their take of a baited hook is much more subtle, barely detectable and often totally overlooked by the fisherman. About a week or so ago, my ice fishing buddies and I moved out into a cove to shallower water in search of some of those early winter bluegills — we weren’t disappointed. As hoped, the gills were there in good numbers in the 10-15 foot depth range; schools would move through off and on all day long. Most of the time, when a school showed up on our fish locators, bluegills started populating the surface of the ice — but not everybody had success. Some of the guys new to ice fishing were having trouble knowing when a fish was taking their presentation — a very typical situation when ice fishing for bluegills. One of the things I like to point out, especially to beginner ice fishermen, is that a strike might be nothing more than the line moving very slightly across the hole in the ice. And to think there’s an even better opportunity to capture a third straight crown in 2018. Man. My bad Chris. One game at a time. Stay focused. Go Warriors. To be continued I am sure. Keep it rolling boys. Cheers.

Guaranteed. The senior business major is second on the team with 11.4 points per game. Both are really good players and even better young men. He is what you would call a throwback. The soft-spoken Psychology major has a great touch and can certainly finish around the rim. Wallace leads the Warriors with 14.8 points and 5.9 rebounds per game. The banks are always open when he gets the ball down low. Chris’ running mate Alex Newbold is simply splendid. Pound for pound. He is one of the toughest players I have EVER seen. Listed a generous 6’0 in your program, the scrappy guard plays outstanding defense and is a monster on the boards. Newbold is super quick and if he were playing defensive back for the New Orleans Saints that Minneapolis Miracle would have never happened.

Wallace and fellow Maryland native, Alex Newbold are a dynamic one two punch. Both lads have been in the starting lineup since they stepped foot on campus. Wallace and Newbold are proven winners and they provide the much needed leadership. Opposing coaches can’t wait until they are gone and I don’t blame them one bit. “I tend to lead by example,” Wallace continued. “Alex is more of the screamer and the in your face type of guy. That’s definitely not me. Different styles. Yes. But both Alex and I relate to this team very well. We are the only seniors left and we have been through this before. Stay focused. One game at a time.” The 6’4” left handed Wallace isn’t flashy.

Against the Wildcats, Brima finished with four points and finished with ten rebounds in a game the Lancers were without Webb, who has been one of their biggest rebounders throughout his time. Brima opened with his best quarter of the season up to that point, scoring two points and grabbing three boards. “I felt like I’m not that good of a scorer and my talents are more on the defensive side of the ball,” Brima said. “It’s really whatever the team needs.” If Brima continues to build off the Danville game he might end up being a scorer for Loyalsock. He nearly posted his first double-digit game of the season. He followed that up with two more rebounds and another two points in the second quarter. The game against the Wildcats resulted in a win for the Lancers. It also showed what type of player Brima could be when given the right opportunity. “He stepped up there and played some quality minutes for us,” Insinger said. “I can’t say enough about Bam.” In his following game, he opened with seven rebounds in the first quarter as Loyalsock started the game with a 26-point effort. “Happy 15th anniversary! Webb Weekly has been an important part of our advertising mix dating back to its first summer of publication. It’s proved to be a great place to get the word out on our upcoming games and promotions. We especially want to salute Jimmy Webb for using the publication to help make a positive difference in our community. Here’s to another successful 15 years…and beyond!” Gabe Sinicropi – Williamsport Crosscutters
THREE ESSENTIAL DOCUMENTS TO RING IN THE NEW YEAR Every new year we make resolutions and promise we’ll get things in order. This is also a good time to make sure your documents meet your needs. Your Will is the basic estate planning document in which you name an executor who will settle your estate and in which you set forth how your estate will be distributed. Your Will may contain one or more trusts for the benefit of spouse, children, grandchildren or others. A bypass clause is especially important to protect against your estate passing to an institutionalized spouse. Most Wills do not have a bypass clause and that can be a grievous and expensive omission. Your Power-of-Attorney names someone to do your business for you if you are unable to do so. A well-drafted durable POA is imperative if you become a resident of a nursing home. Your Living Will states your preference as to whether or not you want extraordinary life-prolonging measures. With these three essential documents professionally prepared by attorneys experienced and knowledgeable in the issues facing older generations you can feel reasonably assured that you have in place the tools you will need to face the new year. We will review your essential documents for free to determine if they meet your needs. From all of us at Greevy & Shoemaker, best wishes for a Healthy and Happy New Year!
