ell, January is down Kane Street, the Pittsburgh in the rearview Steelers were the dynasty of the mirror, and that’s day. I like the sounds of that a a good thing. whole lot better than the New February is the shortest month England Patriots. You have of the year, which means March to give owner Robert Kraft, and spring will soon follow! I head coach Bill Belichick and used to love the winter when I Quarterback Tom Brady a tip of was younger. We lived at Jim today’s economically driven Webb, Jr. National Football League is the top of Kane Street back then, and it ran all the way up to 8th amazing. For my money, Tom Avenue. What a sled ride that was from Brady is the best quarterback ever. Other there down to Mountain Avenue. I don’t than the QB position, the names seem know if I’d do that today, and I’d be happy to change on the back of the jerseys on to set the outside thermometer at 70 and a regular basis. However, the results above year round. on the field remain the same. That also February now also means the Super holds true for Coach Belichick’s assistant Bowl, which still sounds a little funny coaches. They move on due to the success in a sentence. Back when I was crashing of the Patriots to head coaching jobs, that Flexible Flyer into a snow bank, and the next guy up seems to be better. the Super Bowl would have been done Truly remarkable, especially in a game and over by now. Today the Super Bowl like football when injuries are always a is giving the Daytona 500 a run for its possibility. money timing-wise, along with that Back to those great Steeler teams. to. It was fun just writing those names. What a special time that was. Pittsburgh was the City of Champions. The one thing I’ve always wanted to see, along with most in the Keystone State, is the Pittsburgh Steelers versus the Philadelphia Eagles in a Super Bowl. It had a chance of happening this year until Carson Wentz, Eagles starting quarterback, and Steeler Ryan Shazier, their best defensive player, were lost for the season due to injury. At the time I remember telling anybody that would listen that Shazier was a bigger hit to the Steelers than Wentz was to the Eagles. I knew from watching the Steelers their defense was a little suspect without him. While I also knew the Eagles had Nick Foles in the bullpen. I guess I should also mention that whole Tom Brady/Bill Belichick thing the Steelers have to overcome in the AFC. Well, the Eagles made it to the Super Bowl, and Nick Foles had the highest quarterback rating in the history of the NFC playoffs. Pittsburgh gave up 45 to Jacksonville and didn’t even make it to the Patriots. I know everyone wanted to blame a couple of terrible fourth down calls on the Steeler loss — and they were terrible. However, when you score 42 points, you should win. They sure weren’t the Steel Curtain! Maybe next year we’ll get that Steelers/

Eagles matchup in the Super Bowl. This year I will be rooting for Philadelphia, my second favorite team and I’m overjoyed for bird fans everywhere! My son Jimmy is one. Hunter favors the Black and Gold like his father. The best part of the Super Bowl Sunday is getting everybody together. That has been a Webb family tradition as long as I can remember. I hope it is that way in your home. It’s hard to believe they’re bringing Justin Timberlake back for halftime entertainment after that wardrobe malfunction with Janet Jackson. As far as my prediction, you’ll have to read Steph’s column; she has it. But I’ll give you a little hint; I think the Eagles defense is amazing. Keep your eye on linebacker Nigel Bradham. He’s one of the best in the game for my money. So enjoy the American tradition of Super Bowl Sunday and the party that accompanies it. Please don’t have too many Dilly Dillys, and safe travels if the party is not at your house. God Bless America.

Plentiful Predictions!

I

gotta say, this is one of my favorite articles to write each year. Mike Rafferty started the Super Bowl Predictions articles, and I couldn’t wait to continue the tradition. So without further ado, let’s get to it! As always we start with the News Team, which for those who don’t know, is my group of closest friends. Jeff, who always has his finger on the pulse of all things sports, thinks that the avocado commercial is going to be the big winner this year. Seth had some crude thoughts about Tom Brady but thinks they are still going to come out on top at 42-35. Jimmy thinks this is finally the Eagles’ year and they are going to pick up a 21-18 win. Mike Rupert down at Rupert’s Specialty Meats is cutting the score close with a 31-28 Birds’ win. Janice Hiller, over the hill at Beiter’s, is picking the lesser of two evils. “I’m not a fan of the Eagles, but I hate the Patriots more, so I’ll be rooting for the Eagles.” Rick Quigley from Fairfield agrees with Janice. He’s calling it a 27-24

Eagles’ win, but adds the caveat, “I’m not necessarily an Eagles fan, but I don’t want to see the Patriots win again.” Steph Larry Stout thinks Nordstrom the Eagles are going to take the big game 24-17. Larry said, “Yes, I am an Eagles fan, but I also have a great respect for the Pats, especially for their continual excellence for nearly two decades. By objective standards, New England has not been anything close to a juggernaut this season. They have struggled to win against fairly average teams. Brady is the Comeback King, it is true, but what is missed in all these comebacks is that teams with leads against the Patriots usually turn conservative, which gives Brady his opportunities. Coach Doug Pederson of the Eagles keeps his foot on the pedal even with a lead. That was evidenced by the Viking win. The Eagles are a tremendously balanced team, and quarterback Nick Foles has been getting better and better each game. If

the Eagles can shake the Super Bowl jitters early enough, they should be able to take command and keep it.” Resident sports expert Scott Lowery had this to say about the big game, “It’s the Eagles ‘Underdogs’ vs. the Patriot ‘Poker Faces’ for all the chips in Super Bowl 52. Both are Number One seeds in their respective Divisions, so they’ve truly earned their trip to chilly Minneapolis. I have no rooting interest in this one, but as long as Tom Brady is behind the center, I’m dealing Patriots 24-16.” Jamie Spencer is taking the Patriots 28-17. He feels like Tom Brady and Bill Belichick are just too good to be stopped this year. Gabe Sinicropi from the Crosscutters is going yard with his prediction, but it turns out, he’s got some side action he’s looking out for. “The Eagles’ secondary will have to show up against Brady. If they do, it’s a 31-24 Eagles’ victory. Besides, they have to win because we have a side bet with Boston’s affiliate in our league, the Lowell Spinners. If the Eagles win we get a few cases of Moxie soda (created in Lowell) and should the Patriots win, we send them Tastykakes.

PREDICTIONS We are pretty divided around the office. Charlie thinks the Eagles are going to squeak by the Pats 24-21. Ron thinks the Pats are going to squeak by the Eagles 31-28. Mom thinks the Pats are going to take it by a TD 31-24. New guy Curt thinks the Eagles are going to win but doesn’t want to predict a score. Hubs thinks the Eagles are to come up with a surprisingly big 38-17 win — but then again, he doesn’t know much about football. Kristy reached out for help

and came up with 24-17 Patriots’ win. Jimmy thinks the Eagles are going to take it 31-28 and pick up the Bird’s first Super Bowl win. Like the rest of us, he just hopes the city is still standing after. Another resident sports expert, Lou Hunsinger Jr., had this to say, “I think New England will win 27-21. I think the experience factor is a big factor for the Patriots. But I think the huge reason is an intangible. Twelve out of the last 13 Super Bowl winners wore

In the previous two Super Bowls that the Eagles were in--and lost, they wore their green uniforms, just as they are for this Super Bowl. It is hard to beat an intangible like that.” Personally, I believe the Eagles are going to get the W this year. I’m thinking that 28-21 sounds like a good score. The Jaded Eye…

Why Dog-Earing Isn’t the Cat’s Meow

I

s dog-earing a big deal to me? Does an unflushed toilet bother you? For those who don’t remember, or refuse to admit it continues, a dog-ear is a folded down corner of a book page. The name came about because wolves’ ears stand erect while the ears of many breeds of dogs flop over. People use this habit as a crude (by my standard) bookmark. There seem to be two distinct camps when it comes to folding down the corner of a page. Those that do and couldn’t care less about violating precious paper, and those that treat a book as a sacred possession. You know where I fall. I own and use as reference, hundreds and hundreds of books and periodicals. Knowledge is power; books are stepping stones to arrive there. It unnerves me to get a library book, or an oversized coffee table book, a rare book that is scared with dog-ears. Have you ever seen a bible with a big folded triangle at the top of the page? Rest assured, the local “library police” are cracking down on this by cracking knuckles. When you least expect it, they are peering at readers who need to take a break and then peel back the page like

you peel a banana! First infraction when caught, “Abuse of a book in a willing manner that may intrude its enjoyment for the next potential reader.” Penalty: dismissal from the premises for that day. Second offense: written apology written to library community that will be posted. Third time? Gerry You’re out! Ayers The same people who don’t like dog-ears, don’t like anyone writing or jotting notes in books. And the ones who don’t mind creased pages also have no conscience when putting “new ink” onto those pages. Thus far, I have mainly discussed public books. But what if you own it? I suppose if you paid for it you can jump up and down on it if you want to. Even so, I don’t “dog it” or “ink it.” That’s from being a hard-wired caretaker of all things for future generations. I’m well aware books aren’t as popular as they once were. Microfilm, the Internet, and Kindles have pretty much taken over. We save trees (good) but have lost heritage (bad). I feel if I keep a book, any book, in decent shape it may end up in good hands of someone else who will enjoy it. I watched my mother digest her garden

LIFE AFTER DEATH It is interesting to note that, although young adults’ affiliation with religious institutions may seem to be on the decline, the vast majority of younger adults believe in an afterlife. A survey involving 58,000 individuals showed that four out of five younger adults between ages 18 and 29 believe in some sort of afterlife. Over the past fifteen years, the percentage of those in this age group who identified themselves as religious fell from 49 percent to 38 percent. Over a longer 40-year period, the percentage of those believing in an afterlife increased from 73 percent to 80 percent. In fact, those in younger generations were more likely to believe there is life after death than older ones. Life is full of opportunities to show someone we love them. One such opportunity is the funeral or memorial service. Such a loving event celebrates the choices they made, the relationship you shared, and honors the memory of your loved one. To learn more about our services, please call KNIGHT-CONFER FUNERAL HOME at 570-323-7717. We invite you to tour our home at 1914 Memorial Avenue, where we have been faithfully serving our community since 1879. and cooking books in the confines of her own “reading den.” Next to a window that was next to a large tree. Quiet. Secure. She had her own “reading chair” set aside for it. And a “reading lamp” above her shoulder. But she didn’t need “reading glasses” yet! Did she ever dogear a page? Not on your life! Many of her books had glossy, thick pages and some had colorful pictures. Bending pages in books like those were sacrilegious to her! I guess that trickled down to me. There are a few exemptions to the extra ink. I have no problem if it’s signed by the author or a significant figure within the book. Or autographed by a famous person. That adds to the flavor. Let it be known there are far better ways to note where you left off reading than by folding down the top corner and creasing it with your nail. Hey people, are you allergic to — bookmarks? Book lovers will give you one free! These slide between pages like a hot knife through butter. They come in many varieties, have fun quotes or people or places on them, and some are even scented. Unlike that unflushed toilet, I already mentioned. My grandmother used a bookmark made of woven fabrics. I have noticed readers using family photographs, or fancier jobs even having a tassel. Anything to save a page! Dog-earing books on loan from a

friend or library should come with the following disclaimer, “Bend a page or put face down to break this book’s spine and you shall pay one way or the other.” Books survive longer if not creased or tattered. Keeping them as new for as long as possible is a book collector’s mantra! Some books I have read are dogeared at crucial moments. What, just get up and give up during a cliffhanger moment? Bathroom break? Dinner? Putting a book down at a memorable moment equates to ending a joke before the punch line! Here are some fine suggestions for bookmarks: trading cards such as football or baseball, rectangular paint chip samples from the hardware store, or even “post-it” notes. How about your receipt from Starbucks? A parking or speeding ticket? A concert stub can work, and so will a travel luggage tag. I do have one “bookmark” that breaks all the rules. It breathes, has a tail and claws and sheds occasionally. Yes, the family cat likes to plop himself on top of pages of a book and sprawls out on magazines like a beach bum. Hey, it works. The fur between the pages or caught in staples lets you know where you ultimately left off. I think it goes without saying that cats have no time or respect for dog-ears. Or staining a prized book. Same goes for the book aficionado in your family.

he 1993 National League champion Philadelphia Phillies are fondly remembered by their fans in Philly and beyond as a colorful, scrappy aggregation that completely exceeded everyone’s expectations. Two members of this memorable and zany crew, Mitch “Wild Thing” Williams and Mickey Morandini were on hand at the recent 12th Annual Williamsport Crosscutters Hot Stove League Banquet held at the Genetti Hotel. “We were an odd mix of guys, and nobody had any expectations about us, because the writers and the so-called ‘people in the know’, were picking us for last place since we had finished last in 1992,” “Wild Thing” Williams said. “It took all the pressure off of us, and we just went out and had fun and played good baseball.” Williams said the team had the reputation as a carousing, partying type of crew which many people believed went out and partied out in bars and bistros but he said they did most of their drinking of adult beverages in the clubhouse after games and many times staying there until the wee hours of the

morning. Some even sleeping there until game time the next day. “I can’t begin to tell you how much beer we consumed after games that year,” Williams said. “But I think the experience of being together like that promoted a lot of camaraderie and made us a better team. We always looked out for each other and became a tightly knit team.” Morandini echoes this, “They were a great bunch of guys, and the fans of Philadelphia really loved us, because they thought we were a bunch of lunch pail guys that reflected the work ethic of our fans. Even though we lost the World Series, I have had many fans say that they have a fonder place in their heart for us than the two Phillies teams that won championships in 1980 and 2008.” He said the team leader was the late Darren “Dutch” Daulton, who was a consistent All-Star. “Jim Fregosi was our manager and filled in the line-up card, but he always went to “Dutch” if he needed us to do anything or straighten out any disciplinary or other kind of problems. He was our leader, our guy.” In recent years there have been rumors that some members of that team may

have used performance-enhancing drugs. In the period with the media before the banquet, I asked both Williams and Morandini about this. Williams was very defensive about this allegation. “I don’t know how that bit of gossip got started, but it’s not true,” Williams told me. “My locker was right next to and near most of the guys, and I would have known about that type of thing.” Morandini was a little less emphatic. “In those days there was a lot of that kind of stuff going on throughout baseball, so I suppose that it is possible that some of it could have taken place on our team.” Both of them consider their time with the 1993 Phillies a special time in their lives and the 1993 season as a special season for them. A time that they both treasure. Morandini was the manager of the Williamsport Crosscutters in 2011 and have fond memories of his year here. “The fans here are great and are very knowledgeable,” Morandi said. “I really enjoyed managing that team. That team included eight players that went on to play for the Phillies, including Maikel Franco, Aaron Altherr, Brock Stassi, Adam Morgan and Hector Neris. I think we just barely missed making the playoffs.” Morandini went on to manage at the

Double-A level for the Phillies and was first base coach for two seasons. Currently, he is a “team ambassador” for the Phils, performing various public relations functions for the team. Williams is involved with a trucking and transportation company in Texas, where he now lives. This year’s Hot Stove Banquet raised $6,300 that benefited the Original League. Also happening at the banquet, inducted into the Bowman Field Hall of Fame was Bill Nichols, the City of Williamsport’s Finance Director and head of River Valley Transit. The 2018 Sports Walk of Fame honorees were also inducted. They are the late Blaise Alexander, Jr., an accomplished stock car driver, the late Bill Pickelner, who has garnered the nickname “Williamsport’s Mr. Baseball,” for all that he has done for that sport in this area, as well as a his role as owner of Williamsport’s one-time professional basketball team, the Williamsport Billies of the Eastern Basketball Association, and finally, the late Dr. Creighton Hale, who served as President and CEO of Little League Baseball International Inc. from 1973 to 1994. The Williamsport Crosscutters open their 2018 season on June 15 at home against the State College Spikes.

see intent, and motive, and attitude. All we can see is what is visible on the outside, and so we use what’s on the outside to pass judgment. And because of that, all of us are prone to prejudice. How so? Well, as a minister, I find myself in a lot of different socio-economic and culturally diverse settings. And in every one of those settings, I hear prejudiced statements. Examples: City slickers think that country folk are unsophisticated and uneducated hicks. Country folk assume that city slickers are arrogant, self-absorbed snobs. Treehuggers think that people who hunt are cruel and barbaric. Hunters think that treehuggers are hypocrites and snowflakes.

Red is the only color that matters. In time, Nettie became family to us. And she allowed us the honor of being a part of her family — one of the greatest honors she could bestow. Love conquered prejudice. We were blood — and that’s all I have to say about that. In this article, I want to expand our understanding of prejudice. It is important that we do so. Frankly, prejudice exists in nearly every fiber of life. That’s because we humans are naturally prone to prejudice. Why? I believe it has to do with our inability to see inside the heart. We can’t

Luxury car drivers assume that oldbeater drivers are poor and unsuccessful. Old-beater drivers assume that new luxury drivers are wasteful and conceited attention-seekers. Republicans think Democrats are bleeding-heart liberal nutjobs. Democrats think that Republicans are calloused, uncompassionate and bigoted jerks. Liturgical Christians think that charismatics are crazy. Charismatics think that the liturgical are stodgy and dead. Am I wrong? We are constantly prejudging people by what we see. How do I know? Because I’m as guilty as the next guy. Prejudice is as natural to us humans

HELLER’S

Jesus’ teaching and example. In Philippians 2:3, Paul wrote, “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. Each of you should look not only to your own interests but also to the interest of others.” In I Peter 1:22, Peter wrote, “Now that you have purified yourselves by obeying the truth so that you have sincere love for your brother, love one another deeply from the heart.” And in I Peter 4:8, he wrote, “Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.” Friend, our world is being torn to shreds by prejudice. The only force that will overcome it is love. We’ll continue this faith conversation next week.

four-man syndicate, headed by Julius Simon of 631 Lincoln Avenue, will take title to the Park Theater Building tomorrow, when final details of the sale are to be completed. One of the largest real estate transactions here in recent years, it reportedly involves $60,000 to $70,000. Mr. Simon said last night plans for the building are, “indefinite.” In addition to Mr. Simon, who operates a salvage company at Jersey Shore, the buyers are William Pickelner, 590 Lincoln Avenue, a coal dealer, Harry Schwab, of 796 Belmont Ave-

nue, an equipment distributor, and A. LaRue Velott, of 1809 Woodmont Avenue, a tobacco wholesaler. The property on West Fourth Street between Walnut and Campbell streets includes the movie theater, street-level stores, a large second floor area originally built as a ballroom, and five apartments. All equipment in the theater, which was closed two years ago, is included in the sale. Durant L. Furey is broker for the owners, Park Theater Building, Inc. The firm represents the estates of Perry L. Hoffman and L.J. Chamberlin, both deceased, who bought the building in 1937.

Winter has officially arrived. If you haven’t done so already, Safe Kids would like to remind you to keep a winter weather emergency kit in your vehicle to provide for yourself and your family in the event you are stranded in your vehicle for a period of time. Common items to have in your emergency kit include a small shovel, flashlight and batteries, hats, gloves, blankets, non-perishable food and bottles of water. When packing your emergency kit, remember items specific to your

s

family’s needs, like diapers, formula and medicines. If stranded, turn your vehicle on only periodically to provide heat, keeping a window cracked for fresh air. Check the tailpipe frequently to make sure it does not get blocked by snow to prevent a buildup of deadly carbon monoxide. For more on winter weather and other safety tips, visit www.safekids.org. This message is brought to you by Safe Kids PA Lycoming County Partner and the Lycoming County Health Improvement Coalition.

This was true when Tony Mussare, Jack McKernan, and Rick Mirabito began as a new board of commissioners for Lycoming County in January 2016. The one big elephant in the room was the problem of budget deficits. Commissioner boards that preceded them were more fortunate by having a landfill

Commissioners Mussare, McKernan, and Mirabito (the 3 Ms) are all smart fellows. All three are successful businessmen and Mirabito is a lawyer and former state representative. But they have been tasked with enormous challenges to balance the concerns for the county’s pressing and growing social needs and the impatience of a tax-paying population that is highly displeased with tax increases. In retrospect, these boards should have invested more wisely and taken fewer risks in real estate purchases, but everyone would make perfect decisions if it were possible to live backwards. Dealing with the budget deficits alone would be hard enough for the present board, but there were other new problems that needed to be dealt with. Providing in some ways for health care for workers impacts every employer, and for the county, which employs over 500 people, rising costs for health care insurance was disparaging. The ‘hots’ are the county golf course, the tourist promotion agency, and the probation day reporting system. Each of these are controversial, but they are more so because they are directly related to the budget busting problem. The commissioners have endeavored to take aim at these one by one in a deliberate and fair way. At the regular County Commissioners Meeting on Thursday, January 25th, they took up the issue of settling on a vendor for day reporting system. A little background

This resulted in a contract to an outsourced agency named GEO Reentry Services in

A committee made up of different county employees and community representatives was formed to review the two proposals and they came back in the fall of 2017 with a unanimous recommendation to maintain GEO as the contractor. From there, the commissioners reviewed the two companies and peppered them with questions that were being answered up to the late afternoon of January 24th, the day before the actual vote. After much discussion and debate, the 3Ms were two M’s and one N (for No.) The final vote came in 2-1 to retain the GEO Reentry Services, with Commissioner Rick Mirabito being the dissenting vote. When it was all said it done, it wasn’t pretty, but it got done.

September of 2014. By all metrics, this program has been extremely successful. It has totally eliminated the need and expense of shipping inmates to other counties and at the same time has reduced recidivism. But it has not been cheap, costing in the past $850,000 and has since been reduced in the current budget to $700,000 annually. Commissioner Mirabito, in particular, has been adamant that a contract of this size should be put out to bid and the services need to be better quantified. So it was in the early part of 2017, a Request for Proposals went out and in May of 2017 two replies were received, one from the current vendor GEO and the other a local service provider, Firetree, Ltd.

“C

abin fever” hits us all, whether we try to avoid it or not. After days in a row of overcast skies, falling snow and below freezing temperatures, it is difficult not to be bitten by the feeling of being closed in with little hope of getting outside. Fortunately, within a few days, the weather changes — temperatures rise and blue skies appear to provide an opportunity to spend time outdoors. So, what can we do to maximize our time when we can get out and enjoy the fresh air? Pruning. Yep, this is the ideal time to prune fruit trees for maximum effectiveness. Joe Wentzler, an expert on apple trees and their care, once told me that the best time of the year to prune apple trees was “any time the saw is sharp.” However, more recent data supports the concept that wintertime is the appropriate time to prune fruit trees. That makes good sense since during the winter months the trees are dormant and thus cutting the branches will not cause the sap to weep from the fresh cuts. Stark Brothers, based in Missouri, have been in business for over 200 years, supplying seedlings, plants and seeds for orchards, gardens and landscaping across the country.

Any business that has been successful for that long is worth listening to, and they will tell you that virtually nothing is as important to the growth and development of a new seedling or young fruit tree as pruning. If left unpruned, a young tree will struggle in its growth. If a drought should occur during the early life of a tree that is not pruned, it may not grow at all. Further, if left unpruned, they will take longer to bear fruit. This is why Stark Brothers prune all of their bare-root trees in their nursery row for proper shaping and then also prune the seedlings right before packing and shipping. Initially, when bare-root stock is dug up, many of the fine hair-like roots that are necessary to absorb moisture and nutrients are lost and the remaining root system may be insufficient to feed the branches. At this point, there is an imbalance until the full sized top is pruned. The imbalance will cause the tree growth to be weak and slow. Keep this in mind whenever you might dig up and replant young seedlings. Cutting the tree back actually stimulates stronger and more vigorous growth from the remaining buds. After a single growing season, a properly pruned tree will be bigger and healthier than a matching unpruned tree. Branches that come off the main stem in a tight V-pattern should be removed, as

be accomplished over several seasons. As the tree begins to mature and bear fruit, you will still need to attend to its overall condition. While late fall, winter and early spring are the best times to do the bulk of the pruning, there are a few things that should be done anytime you see them. If you notice a diseased branch or damaged branch (thanks to a deer or bear perhaps), it should be removed right away. Whenever you notice any upright branches (called ‘suckers” or “water sprouts”), they should be removed as they only sap strength from the tree. Additionally, remove any branch that is growing back toward the center of the tree. Don’t wait until winter to do this type of “touch-up” pruning.

they will likely split away from the stem when they begin to bear fruit. The strongest branches are those that come away from the main branch at a 10 o’clock or 2 o’clock angle. They will hold up much better when a heavy crop of fruit might occur. Make sharp clean cuts at a slight angle — just above a bud, yet far enough above so that die back of the branch will not kill the bud. Every branch has buds pointed in various directions. Since you want vigorous growth to spread away from the center of the tree, make your cut above a bud that is aimed outward. This helps your tree grow in a spreading pattern. Shaping and pruning your young trees is not a once-and-done thing, but should

While I’ve detailed one of my favorite recipes here, my wife and I also like to eat the fillets fried and baked; I’m sure the lady of the house has any number of recipes that would also apply to the fish taken through the ice this winter. If you want to explore more recipes, the Fish and Boat Commission has published an excellent book called the Pennsylvania Anglers’ Cookbook. The book covers smoking, pickling, canning, freezing and a bunch of fish recipes as well. Another great book is the late Sylvia Bashline’s book The Bounty of the Earth published by Winchester Press, 1421 South Sheridan, Tulsa, Oklahoma, 74114.

with a package of the imitation crab meat (you can use the real crab meat if so inclined) creating a “thick cement mix”. Add Old Bay seasoning, salt, and pepper to taste. Now add a layer of about threequarters of an inch of the mix to the fillets and then cover that with an additional layer of panfish fillets. Sprinkle a little more Old Bay on and add a little chunk of butter. Cover the dish with a piece of foil and bake for about 10-15 minutes at 400 degrees. Remove the foil a couple of minutes before taking out of the oven. If you want to, you can sprinkle some kind of green stuff over the individual fish cakes to make them look even classier.

By team, the Jaguars had the ball for 83 if a betting line is available on this one, but here’s a hot tip — for real game action — take plays with a ‘total action’ time of 7:30.9. The Patriots snapped 70 plays consuming 6:23.1. the under. To satisfy my own curiosity, I viewed the The game’s 153 total plays took an average AFC’s championship game between the New of 5.4 seconds to complete. As for Sunday’s Super Bowl 52 in frigid Minneapolis, commercials are going at a rate of $5-million for each :30 spot. Although a few more could be added by game time twelve sponsors have opened their checkbooks to get in on the viewer action. Those sponsors include Avocados from Mexico, Bud Light, Budweiser, Coca-Cola, Doritos, Hyundai, M&M’s, Michelob Ultra, Pepsi, Pringles, Stella Artois and Turbo Tax. pace of baseball games contain more ‘action’ than do NFL games. The NFL is still a most popular product to watch even if the ‘actionpacked’ can be questioned. MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred has recently proposed a series of rule changes aimed at reducing the time of a Major League game. Included in their proposals are a :20 pitch clock, player meetings at the pitching mound, and visits to the mound by a manger or pitching coach. Last season the average length of a MLB game was just over three hours, similar to the length of an NFL game. My question is — do fans that pay the ticket price to see a professional game really care about how long the game takes? Based upon available 2016 ticket prices the average cost per ticket per sport were: NFL $92.98, NHL

mile swing was an up-close encounter with Cottonwood Falls. There was only a trace of water in the West Branch of Double Run, but the brilliant fall colors made our trek worthwhile. The backwoods setting and natural rhythms were so peaceful. It was another great day out. I am not an outdoor expert by any means, but you should always dress accordingly and wear the proper footwear while on the trails. I always recommend that you use extreme caution too. There are many slippery slopes and challenging terrains. Give a hoot. Don’t pollute. Pack out what you pack in. Get the next generation of kin involved with the great outdoors and keep things fun and exciting when you do. Please get out and celebrate the woods this spring. Cheers.

Every new year we make resolutions and promise we’ll get things in order. This is also a good time to make sure your documents meet your needs. Your Will is the basic estate planning document in which you name an executor who will settle your estate and in which you set forth how your estate will be distributed. Your Will may contain one or more trusts for the benefit of spouse, children, grandchildren or others. A bypass clause is especially important to protect against your estate passing to an institutionalized spouse. Most Wills do not have a bypass clause and that can be a grievous and expensive omission. Your Power-of-Attorney names someone to do your business for you if you are unable to do so. A well-drafted durable POA is imperative if you become a resident of a nursing home. Your Living Will states your preference as to whether or not you want extraordinary life-prolonging measures. With these three essential documents professionally prepared by attorneys experienced and knowledgeable in the issues facing older generations you can feel reasonably assured that you have in place the tools you will need to face the new year. We will review your essential documents for free to determine if they meet your needs. From all of us at Greevy & Shoemaker, best wishes for a Healthy and Happy New Year!

Rock Trail is one of my personal favorites. This 1-mile loop takes you on a short rocky journey to High Rock Vista and High Rock Falls. The Butternut Trail is a 2.5-mile loop that ascends along the creek for another impressive view. The Canyon Vista Trail is a challenging 4-mile loop that dissects the eastern portion of the park. You eventually climb to 1750 feet at Canyon Vista. Jensen and I headed up to Worlds End on a warm afternoon in the fall. The Park Office was our very first stop, and we agreed to try a new hike that was suggested. The LT Link Trail started right at the station. It took us along the banks of Lycoming Creek. Butzler Carves Out Another Spot in Jersey Shore History With Rare 100th Swimming Victory

S

igns were lining the pool and an unusually large crowd of students, also holding signs, shuffled into Jersey Shore’s natatorium. The scene was courtesy of Jersey Shore’s Emma Butzler, who has become one of the school’s most decorated swimmers. As she approached the team’s meet against Lewisburg, she knew a win in an individual race would send the crowd and team into a frenzy as it would be her 100th.

Butzler didn’t make the crowd wait long. After the 200 Medley Relay opened the meet, Butzler got ready to swim the 200 Free. Within the first 30 seconds of the race, it was clear Butzler was going to capture the rare number.
