Hope Springs Eternal

I

heard my favorite words of February this past weekend. Pitchers and catchers will be reporting for Spring Training. To me, that’s like seeing the first robin. A sure sign spring and the Boys of Summer are on their way. There’s no truth to the rumor that the Pittsburgh Pirates were the first club to report because their pitching was so bad last year. They did, however, report to Bradenton, Fla. on February 12th, and along with the New York Mets, were the first two teams to get it going. I always looked forward to my good friend Bill Byham heading south and reporting back to what the Buccos were up to at Spring Training. Hope truly springs eternal no matter who your favorite major league team is. They are all tied for first place — with a record of 0-0. “Maybe this will be the year,” can be heard referring to every team. With the Cubs finally exorcising the curse of the goat a couple of seasons back, and the Philadelphia Eagles winning the Super Bowl — that tells me it’s about time the Cleveland Indians won a World Series. A couple of thoughts about the Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles before we put the pigskin away. Congratulations to Eagles fans everywhere. What a great Super Bowl. Even more impressive was the celebration and parade that followed in the City

of Brotherly Love. For the most part, everybody was well behaved. There’s always going to be a couple that go over the top, or should I say scurry up the pole. Eagles fans are definitely a special breed and waited a long time for this one. What class acts Eagles coach Doug Pederson, owner Jeffrey Lurie, and all the Eagles players exemplified. They made it all about the City of Philadelphia and those bird fans that supported them for oh so long! More importantly, in today’s world, it’s great to hear so many thanking God and our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ as they were being interviewed just after the Super Bowl. Talk about spreading the word. The state of Pennsylvania can take pride in the Philadelphia Eagles, and there are more championships in the future. Carson Wentz had to sit this one out. He will be driven to win one when he’s on the field. Who knows, the Eagles might become the first NFL team with two Super Bowl MVPs on the roster.

Saving Lives for Zachary

The terrible effects of heroin here in our area and across the Country cannot be overstated. Never has there been a drug that is so very addictive, easily obtained and relatively cheap. You don’t have to look very far to find someone that has

been affected by the terrible addiction. It can happen or occur in anyone’s family. The drug does not discriminate. I’ve known Carolyn Miele for years. I coached her son Connor in both football and basketball. She has raised six Jim children — five sons and Webb, Jr. a daughter. She’s worked most of her adult life as a midwife. Her story, unfortunately, has become much too common in our Country. What she has done out of the tragedy is truly amazing. On February 6th of 2016 her son, Zachary, overdosed on heroin. He had fought a tough battle against his addiction and was clean for almost three years before losing his life. From this heart-wrenching tragedy, which no parent wants to face, in trying to make sense of her son’s death, Carolyn created “Saving Lives for Zachary”. Her goal is to raise awareness about heroin addiction. To provide education for children and parents. To help the already addicted who may see no way out. To help provide information on services available and come together as a community to save the lives of our children. “I am committed, along with my family and many dedicated friends, to raising awareness in our community. If we come together we can make a difference,” Carolyn stated.

She has worked tirelessly through the pain and tears trying to help others deal with the realities of heroin addiction. She holds monthly meetings, and on Monday, February 19th will hold her second annual Saving Lives for Zachary fundraising event, “Alternatives to Pain Management — A Holistic Approach”. It is her goal to provide education on pain management, alternatives such as sound healing, meditation, acupuncture, osteopathic manipulation, spinal screenings, massage, exercise, nutrition, and counseling. There will be a silent auction and basket raffle, along with great food. All proceeds will go towards the monthly meetings allowing the continuation of the Saving Lives for Zachary program. The event will be held at the Trade and Transit Center II in Williamsport from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. For more information about the event and Saving Lives for Zachary, you can go to savinglivesforZachary.com and Facebook. If you have questions for Carolyn, she can be reached at 570-2200684 or Carolynm62@comcast.net. The only way we are going to address the heroin problem is through open conversation and education. That is what Carolyn is trying to provide. If you know anybody that may need a helping hand, please reach out to them and provide the information. This problem is bigger than all of us individually. A heartfelt thank you to Carolyn Miele, may you find peace in helping others. God Bless America.

appy Valentine’s Day! Whether it’s platonic, familial or romantic, I hope your day is full of love! Since Valentine’s Day is all about the love, I think we should all celebrate by sharing love and kindness with those around us. There are ton of simple gestures (both romantic and not) that you can do to make the people around you — friends, family, significant others and even strangers — feel a little bit extra love and graciousness this week. • We all love our social media, so it put it to good use and send someone a compliment via Twitter or FB Messenger. Better yet, send a couple of people compliments! • Everyone loves sweet treats on Valentine’s Day, so bring doughnuts (or a healthy treat, like cut-up fruit) to work. • Let the person behind you at the supermarket checkout with one or two items go ahead of you. • Give someone a hug. • Put sticky notes with positive slogans on the mirrors in restrooms.

• It’s easy to get caught up in your own life, problems, and blessings, so try to make sure every person in a group Steph conversation feels Nordstrom included. • Send anonymous flowers to someone you know could use them. • Babysit for a single parent for free. • Pay a stranger a compliment. • Leave some extra quarters in the laundry room/mat. • Send dessert to another table. • Cook someone a meal. Whether a friend just had a baby or if you know someone who is having a hard time, cooking a meal can mean a lot to someone. • Tell your siblings how much you love and appreciate them. • Purchase some extra dog or cat food and drop it off at an animal shelter. • Say yes at the store when the cashier asks if you want to donate $1 to whichever cause. • Shovel the whole block’s sidewalks.

• Buy someone their favorite snack. • Hold hands. • Leave some quarters taped to gumball machines for kids. • Cook together. • Spend time with your partner when they’re enjoying their favorite hobby, even if it’s something that doesn’t interest you much. • Leave a generous tip for a server. • Say “Good morning” to a person standing next to you in the elevator, or at the coffee shop. • Pay for someone’s bill. This may mean paying for someone’s food, coffee, toll, groceries, or something else. • Leave coupons on items at the grocery store for others to use. • When you hear that negative, discouraging voice in your head, remember to leave yourself alone — you deserve kindness too! Basically, use this holiday that is so full of love, to show kindness to those around you — whether you know them or not. There is so much negativity in the world, imagine the difference we could make if each of just chose one thing from this list to do to make someone else’s day a little brighter.

F

ood for low income and needy families is a very real social problem, and the New Love Center of Jersey Shore is in the forefront in the effort to deal with this problem. According to the Rev. Kerry Aucker, pastor of the St. John’s Lutheran Church at 229 South Broad Street, Jersey Shore, who helps coordinate the efforts of the New Love Center, the New Love Center started on October 1, 2014 after the American Rescue Workers closed its facility on Allegheny Street. A group of people came together seeing the need to continue this ministry in our community, and it has now evolved into an operation that serves 900 meals a month at the Café located at Trinity United Methodist Church and the Food Pantry, which serves 450 families per month. In 2017, the Food Pantry distributed 192,000 meals. First United Methodist Church helps

with the Christmas food box distribution and volunteers from Phelps Chapel assemble and distribute 175 backpacks to area school students each week. Except for a part-time cook, volunteers operate the New Love Center. In 2017, the New Love Center became a non-profit 501c3 organization registered through the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the Internal Revenue Service. It is operated by a separate Board of Directors from the area. While it is currently located in different churches to save money, it is not affiliated with any church. They receive donations and volunteers from many organizations, churches, and individuals. The New Love Center has a budget of $82,000. “We operate 20 refrigerators and freezers to keep milk, eggs, produce, and meats frozen or refrigerated,” Aucker told Webb Weekly. “We receive two grants from the United States Department of Agriculture for Clinton and Lycoming counties. We purchase food through the Central Pennsylva-

I drive an older car that requires maintenance on occasion, insurance, and registration. I have homeowner’s insurance to pay. I am currently trying to save for a new set of dentures, which I have needed for many years. The New Love Center Food Pantry has been a great help for me as far as providing many helpful and healthy foods. I don’t have much cash at the end of the month. In fact, some months I’m totally broke, but thanks to the Food Pantry, I’m never hungry. Thank you so much for your help and also thanks to the workers who dedicate their time and energy to help us. They are all so kind by getting help with food, it allows me to buy other items that we need, and we are grateful.” They are open the Second and Fourth Friday of each month from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 3 p.m. Please bring identification with you each time. The New Love Center only provides food assistance.” Aucker provided some testimonials from some anonymous beneficiaries of the Love Center. “I have a more balanced diet now. Outfits, Not Just Clothes…

How to Dress for Valentine’s Day

W

hether you’re a die-hard romantic, or just planning a simple evening in with your honey, Valentine’s Day is a chance to bust out hearts, ruffles, reds, and pink. Of course, traditional V-Day apparel has two main challenges. First is finding a balance between romantic and functional, because it’s still winter and unfortunately cute, slinky, dresses — the stereotypical route for romantic outfits — will leave you freezing in the middle of a typical February. Plus, not every lady is the ooh la la type with the time or energy for flounces and flirt, am I right? However, this doesn’t mean you

can’t zhuzh up your everyday style with a Valentine’s theme this February 14th. I’m a big advocate of dressing in conjunction with the occasion. You wouldn’t wear a sequined cocktail dress for a lunch date, nor would you show up for a fancy dinner in jeans and a t-shirt (at least I hope not). So, what are your plans this Valentine’s Day? Dinner and movie? Candlelit, indoor picnic? Happy Hour with your girlfriends? Pizza party with the kids? No matter what you have scheduled, your plans should dictate your outfit. Additionally, look at the forecast. What will be the high and low that day, and are they predicting snow

or freezing rain? Be prepared if the weather will be dicey and/or icy. With your plans and the weather in mind, you can start putting together your Valentine’s look. If you go the dress route, great! Bernadette Be sure to be warm Ulsamer with layers, like tights, leggings, slips, etc. Also, leave the open-toed slingbacks for spring and go with your heeled boots, ideally a pair with some tread. Your little black dress is an excellent choice for

a romantic dinner. You can put a V-Day spin on that LBD with red jewelry, red nail polish, red lipstick, a red scarf, even red tights, or a combination of all five. Color is a great, and easy way, to give a nod to the holiday. If you have casual plans, then jeans and a bright red sweater will serve you. Of course, red is not the only color that speaks to romance and St. Valentine; pink is another option. Or, you can go with a variation of red or pink, like burgundies, mauves, or deep-wine hues. I also recommend lavender, which speaks to the coming spring renewal, and looks good on just about everyone. If you want to be on-trend, consider a more vibrant purple, like ultra-violet, which is 2018 Pantone Color of the Year!

LIVING RELATIONSHIPS

It is important to remember that death ends a life, not a relationship. With this in mind, the goal should never be to “move on” or “get over” the death of a loved one. If the deceased mattered to you in life, he or she will continue to matter to you after death. Not only does the grieving process build to a stage of acceptance, but it also invites the living to amplify their relationships with the dead. Our feelings toward the dead should not fade, but they should expand as we grow emotionally. At this point, we can use our memories to propel us ahead in life, always mindful of the encouragement, love, and support that we received. A funeral can and should be as unique as the life that is being celebrated. KNIGHTCONFER FUNERAL HOME can assist you in planning and coordinating all of the details and will explain all of the available options. We want you to feel as comfortable as possible during your time of grief. It is our goal to treat every family as we would treat our own. To learn more about our services, please call 570-323-7717. We invite you to tour our facility at 1914 Memorial Avenue, where we have been serving our community since 1879. QUOTE: “What we have once enjoyed deeply we can never lose. holiday. You can’t go wrong with red and white polka dots, or a pastel plaid print. A novelty print, like a broken heart, will give your outfit an ironic twist. If you want to get racy, there are always animal prints. But, be forewarned that leopard print is not for the faint of heart. No matter your plans or the forecast this February 14th, you can go all out in bright red hearts from your earlobes to your toes, or just give a nod to the day by adding a bit of color or print to your everyday style, like a heart-shaped brooch, or a siren-red manicure. Either way, have fun and stay warm. I, myself, am planning on wearing simple red shift knit dress for a low-key dinner with the hubby. Happy Valentine’s Day!

Heart prints come out of the woodwork on February 14th. Sweatshirts, ties, socks, blouses, there’s a variety of ways to wear your heart on your sleeve this season. Of course, big bold heart-shaped patterns aren’t for everyone. My two- year old can pull off gold hearts all over her pink leggings, but not so much for me. Again, take into account your activity, plans, venue, etc. Donning a huge red heart on a homemade knit sweater may not be the best choice for the office. Of course, if you’re volunteering at your child’s school helping to hand out “Finding Dory” valentines, then, by all means, bring on all of the hearts! Instead of the traditional heart print, consider florals, like roses, which are THE romantic flower and a subtle nod to the

Doctors and nurses would call their domain an “island of hope” and not despair. As a patient with drain tubes hanging out of you and constant tests every hour, it takes on another meaning. I was ready to leap the bed and paddle back to land! When you leave a hospital, clinic, or rehab center, I suppose you are ripe and “open game” for cross-examination. If you commit a crime and go to court, you expect it. But when you come home and are trying to get back into the groove of things, it’s hard to play press mediator. It’s natural for people to be curious and hopefully concerned and not callous.

that in several other ways that you have also experienced. Leaving the comforts of high school to enter the challenging and unforgiving world of college. To take on a new job even though the old one provided security, and to dump socalled friends who were anything but. My most significant journey from shore to discovery was met with an island. Being laid up in a hospital for several weeks brought misery and depression. Isolation from the rest of the world and the “normalcy” I enjoyed. This “island” represented a 50/50 proposition — half the people there had an illness, and the other 50 percent roaming the halls were there to help them!

passing them. A cheerful, “Hi, how are you?” Came out in unison. An older man in Brandon Park nodded and gave me the “peace sign” as I whizzed along. A driver in a car yielded to me when he really didn’t have to. Some boys on bikes decided to ride next to me and inquire if I liked my trusty Cannondale. I stopped for a drink at a small store, and the clerk said, “How far are you riding? You look trim and fit, so you must bike all the time.” It’s simple things like that, which can remove any self-doubt, make a person feel better, and make the world a much nicer place. Stranger danger? Not on that day! Everything was on a positive note. Sailing away from your shore may be on purpose sometimes — to expand horizons, to seek new things and challenges in life. Other times, however, it’s a wicked voyage thrust upon us, which we didn’t ask for, let alone plan for. No doubt then, when trekking through a rough patch — a storm — and you want to get back to where you were, it’s nice to encounter strangers, who not only won’t inquire about the bleak, but on certain occasions seem to all come from one place for you to find the way home. A fog house.

Even so, it’s hard to answer some questions that can be thrown at you. Life expectancy being at the top of the list. Don’t ask. It’s in higher hands and promised lands so ask him, not me. Discovering new lands comes at the risk of some very choppy waters. There was a day this past summer, late in August if I recall, that I felt I wasn’t being evaluated under a microscope. The morning started with a leisurely walk where only the birds and squirrels gave me a “once over.” No harm done there. By afternoon it became more freewheeling as I hit the road on my bicycle. What ensued could best be described as God using me in a public relations video for anyone feeling down and out after a grueling path of recovery. For some reason every stranger I encountered that afternoon, not knowing me from Paul, never stopped being friendly or uplifting. I must thank the three ladies walking their dogs in Bruce Henry Park who took the time to tell me their dogs names and pedigrees. To the little boy near Penn Street who waved me on as if I was on the Tour de France. The two teen girls walking past the Lycoming football field, their braces gleaming in the late summer sun, didn’t look down as this guy on a bike was

the county coroner, he has taken the position that his job is broader than merely determining causes of death. His mission is to help as many people as possible live a long and healthy life. Chuck Kiessling was born and raised in Williamsport, and from an early

Somehow, he also found time in 1984 to get married to his wife, Gayle, and a few years later get the attention of the county coroner, George Gedon, who saw in this ambitious young man an excellent choice for deputy coroner, which Kiessling accepted in 1986. Kiessling served in this capacity until 1997, when the county commissioners decided to appoint Chuck Kiessling to become county coroner “for a couple of weeks.” The “couple of weeks” as temporary coroner drug out into many

age had an interest in medicine. After high school, he worked as an orderly at Williamsport Hospital and decided to enroll in Lycoming College to study pre-med. But for a person who liked the action, the academics without practice was just too dry. So, in the early 1980s, he decided to go to Williamsport Hospital Nursing School to become a registered nurse. He had already been serving as an EMT with the Old Lycoming Fire Company, so upon his graduation from nursing school, he went to receive state certification as a Pre-Hospital Registered Nurse (PHRN). From 1984-88, Kiessling worked hard in his multi-faceted role as an emergen-

months, and beside the cloud that he had to work under, it was also a challenge for other reasons. Chuck worked as coroner during the day and still worked as an ER nurse at night. Finally, In 1999, Kiessling decided to run for election as county coroner, a position he won and has held ever since. It is a massive understatement to say that he has proudly represented his office and the county he represents. Elected in 2015 to serve as the President for the PA Coroner’s Association, he has also been the Liaison to the PA Coroner’s Education Board for many years. In addition to his responsibilities as Lycoming County Coroner, he serves as Adjunct Faculty for the Pennsylvania College of Technology and Buck’s County Community College instructing EMS and Death Investigation courses. And with all this, he is still a volunteer fireman, serving as Assistant Chief of the Old Lycoming Township Volunteer Fire Company. Yet, when speaking to Coroner Kiessling about what he is most proud, he does not mention these accolades, but rather about one of his first initiatives in 2001. Together with Tom Marino who was the District Attorney at the time, they formed the Child Death Review team. One of the primary concerns were teen driving fatalities. Stud-

ies showed that the 29 driving deaths in the previous four-year period had not been due to drinking or drugs, but instead speeding and lack of seat belt use. Kiessling had a county map drawn up showing where these incidents occurred and the cause and had it distributed to schools throughout the county. The result was a drastic reduction in teen driving accidents. It might seem ironic, but Kiessling is a coroner with concern for life. Besides the Child Fatality Review Team, he is also an active member of Safe Kids PA Lycoming County and has served as Chair in 2011. He established the Lycoming County Cribs for Kids Program in 2008 providing infant safe sleep education and providing cribs to needy parents throughout the county. Charles Kiessling is a coroner that wants everyone to have the best chance at life. The motto of the Lycoming County Coroner’s Office has been “Protecting the Living Through the Investigation of Death”. NOTE: Information about the coroner’s office can be found on the Lycoming County website: lyco.org. A link to the maps that were created through the Lycoming County Child Death Review Team efforts can be found at http://www.lyco.org/Portals/1/Coroner/Documents/Map%202015.pdf.

The line of march was crowded before the procession began to move shortly after 7:30 p.m. Thousands watched the procession with estimates as high as 15,000 being made by members of the committee responsible for the event. The soldiers, 180 of them, occupied the balcony in the auditorium while their friends, relatives and members of the general public packed the dance floor below. A varied program was presented with J. couple of weeks ago it was noted in this column that there were several hot-button issues that the Lycoming County Commissioners would have to deal with in 2018. The White Deer Golf Course is one of those that will be closely watched throughout the year. The County Commissioners have made it clear that this is a make or break year for the golf course. For decades, the county’s golf course located off of Route 15 in Clinton Township

has hemorrhaged money. Like a business owner who knows he has a great product but just can’t seem to get ahead of the bills, previous administrations have trusted that if they could just get over the curve, the golf course could really be a financial asset. In October of 2015, a decision was made by the county commissioners to take roughly $1 million from a $5 million bond that Lycoming County issued in 2012 to fund infrastructure improvements at the county landfill and capital improvements at “recreational facilities”. In early 2016, the commissioners hired Billy Casper Golf

(BCG) to operate the golf course. If anyone could turn around White Deer, it would be the BCG, recognized as one of the best golf course management companies in the country. Ryan Peterson, an early thirties, super-sharp golf course manager was brought from the Lincoln Hills Golf Club in Sacramento, California by BCG to take the reins of White Deer Golf Course in March of 2016. And take the reins he did! Almost immediately he changed the atmosphere, such as initiating an Employee Thank You Day where the workers were given a meal and a chance to play on the course themselves. He has ensured that all departments are trained in best practices, emphasizing a ‘safety first’ focus. But turning around

nancial stability and course sustainability. Anyone who golfs at White Deer has noticed the difference, from a more attractive clubhouse to better irrigation that keeps the course greener, to long-neglected bunkers that now have fresh sand rather than shale and boulders. Necessary equipment was purchased to keep the greens in pristine condition as well as the fairways neatly cut and roughs manageable. Overgrown trees were either trimmed or removed to improve scenery and improve the turf around them. As critical and necessary as all these improvements were, Ryan and his team have made intangible changes such as changing the name of the “Challenge” course (which tended to scare novice golfers) to the “Heritage” course. Membership options rose from two to five, which better matches a wider variety of golfers needs, and resulted in a $15,000 increase in membership fees! Yes, it does all come back to revenue, and in the first year of operation, the course had a $190,000 shortfall and the second year it was $90,000. However, almost of all of this was attributed to debt service from the various bond fees, interest from old loans, and line of credit interest from past years. The decision by the county commissioners to clear this to save money on interest will put the course on track to make somewhere between $25-50,000 profit this year. But the value of White Deer Golf Course

to the Lycoming County community is more than just providing a recreational outlet. In the past year alone, 60 golf outings were held which averaged $7-8,000 profit for organizations such as the American Legion and West Branch Drug and Alcohol Abuse Commission. This means that over a half a million dollars was raised for charity with the help of White Deer. Last year Hope Enterprises made $60,000, their best fundraiser ever. For the past two years, White Deer has participated in the World’s Greatest Golf Outing, a program hosted by Billy Casper Golf at all of its 140 courses around the country. This event supports the Fisher House Foundation, which provides housing to veterans and military families receiving treatment at military medical centers. Amazingly, for the past two years, White Deer participants outnumbered every one of the BCG’s courses! All things considered, perhaps this “hot button” may turn out to be an easy call for the county commissioners. It would seem that an institution that produces $2550,000 per year, supplies $500,000 to local charities, provides top-level training and good employment to area residents, and at the same time gives a great golf outing for a local duffer for just $35 while not only maintaining but continually improving the course in excellent condition would be the very definition of success. Who wants to mess with success?

2018 SPOUSAL IMPOVERISHMENT STANDARDS AND WHAT THEY MEAN Annually the Department of Human Services issues financial guidelines for the Community Spouse of a patient residing in a nursing home. Some of the 2018 numbers may matter to you: Minimum Monthly Maintenance Needs Allowance: - $2,030.00. The Community Spouse is permitted unlimited income. If she/he doesn’t earn the minimum it is possible to redirect some of the patient’s income to the Community Spouse. Monthly Housing Allowance: - $609.00. The Community Spouse may receive a housing allowance from the patient’s income. The housing allowance is separate from the monthly maintenance needs allowance and is designed to protect the Community Spouse from impoverishment. Minimum Resource Standard: - $24,720.00. DHS allows married couples to protect 50% of their total resources (excluding some valuable exempt resources) or a minimum of $24,720.00. For couples with total resources greater than twice the minimum, 50% is protected up to the Maximum Resource Standard of $123,600.00. Filing an application for Medicaid long-term care benefits is a complex procedure. Additional and extensive assets may be protected but this requires a comprehensive plan designed to maximize the allowances, and utilize other methods to provide for the Community Spouse. The attorneys at Greevy & Shoemaker and their Certified Medicaid Planner™ are dedicated to working for you and your family to preserve your resources for a reasonable fee. As always, the first consultation is free.

ow. Just… wow. Did you see that? Wasn’t it awesome? It was a once-in-alifetime sight and you almost missed it;

now, you’ll never forget it. You just don’t have many moments like that anymore, and in “Here is Real Magic” by Nate Staniforth, that’s a wonder. All Nate Staniforth ever wanted was to be a magician. As he remembers, much of his Iowa boyhood was spent at the Ames Public Library, reading books about magic before going home to work on a vanishing coin trick. He’d stand in the bathroom of his family’s home, watching himself in the mirror as he dropped the coin over

BOOKWORM and over until his mother kicked him out of the bathroom. Until he stopped dropping the coin and finally made it disappear. All he ever wanted was to be a magician, and so when he graduated from college, he moved to Los Angeles in search of fame and fortune. Just before he ran out of money, he received a call from an agent who offered Staniforth a slot on a college tour. It was a toe in the door. And it sounded like a dream come true: every night was a new opportunity to WOW an audience. Every show was a chance to enhance the magic that Staniforth was creating, but there was no glamour: he criss-crossed the country on airplanes and adrenaline, rarely remembering which city he was in because they all looked alike. He missed his wife. It was a recipe for burn-out, which happened in Wisconsin after years of touring. But bills needed paying and magic was money – or, at least enough to make ends meet. Staniforth didn’t know if he wanted to be a magician anymore, but he couldn’t think of anything else and so, because he wanted to find real magic, he headed for India where it was hot – much hotter than

an Iowa cornfield. It was dusty, too, and overwhelming and Staniforth wanted to go home. But he stayed. He stayed to see snake charmers, gilded rivers, one-armed monkeys, and holy sites. And he stayed long enough to hear a truth his soul needed to hear. Wow. And to think that I thought this was just some run-of-the-mill old memoir… Nope, it’s much more than that. With a beautiful bit of literary hocus-pocus, author Nate Staniforth lets readers watch the birth of a magician, right from the beginning. That’s a familiar story to anyone who’s practiced nonstop to follow a dream but Staniforth also shows the drudgery it takes to be successful, beginning with a strange sort of travelogue that’s loaded with exhaustion but that ultimately becomes this story’s reason. Admittedly, that may sound disheartening – and it is. But, like a good magic trick, you have to wait for the payoff which, in this case, is so incredibly lovely, a bit humorous, and woven with a plea that readers won’t be able to resist. In the end, Staniforth lets you in on the wonder and for that, “Here is Real Magic” will wow you.

A

couple of Friday nights ago, I thought I heard the faint tinkling of a bell. It turns out it was my dear and old friend, Tommy Portanova, receiving his wings, for he had suddenly and unexpectedly died earlier that night. Losing Tommy hit me hard. It was a sad, jarring and vivid reminder of my own mortality. No one outside my immediate family knew me longer than him. We go back to kindergarten together at Jackson Elementary School in 1962. After I moved over to High Street in 1964 and went to

school at Lose and later Stevens, I did not see as much of him. When I did see him, it was usually at the Newberry Lions Carnival every summer — where I always caught up with my Newberry friends. He was always friendly, and he always greeted me with his infectious, cheery smile — something he retained for all of his life. I saw him again when we both went to high school and had several classes together, and his warm friendliness had not changed. Strangely enough, I was reunited with him again, this time in college, at Bloomsburg State College, where he had trans-

When he got to Bloom, he ended up as a roommate with another fellow Williamsporter whom I was close to, Wayne Palmer, and we started to hang out together. And then in my senior year at Bloomsburg, he was one of my roommates. It was never a dull moment with him. We had a lot of fun and laughs and warm memories that still carry to this day. Tommy and I both got a big kick out of professional wrestling, and sometimes at the apartment, we would engage in our own wrestling matches, we called “sumo wrestling,” even though it in no way re-

sembled the real Japanese kind. Inevitably, Tommy would suffer minor injuries whenever he struck a piece of furniture or wall that got in the way. But that was fine with him — we still were having fun. After we got back to Williamsport, we continued our friendship, and I would see him periodically. I was on hand for the happiest day of his life when he married his beloved Rhonda. Tommy was there on the best day of my life when I married my dear Mary and on the worst day of my life when we buried her. The constant through all the years for Tommy was his unbridled passion for

One of his aides was a character called “Ditto,” and in the film as Tracy’s character is dying he looks up at Ditto and quietly says, “How do you thank a guy who gave you a million laughs?” I find myself asking the same question about Tommy. How do thank him for all the joy and laughter he gave all of us. I guess Tommy would be pleased that we enjoyed those laughs. As I looked around at all the people crammed into Tommy’s standing room only funeral service at his beloved Pine

reating a management plan for your property is the first step in optimizing the habitat on your land. Having put down on paper a list of your property’s inventory, a list of the end goals for the work you will do and some of your ideas as to how you can accomplish your objectives, it is now time to take the next step — reviewing and refining your thoughts with “the experts”! The great news is that the sources of help are numerous and excellent. There are conservation groups and government agencies that can provide expertise in finetuning your plan. There are also tons of books, magazine articles, videos and DVD’s that will guide you in your planning and execution. The National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF) is very active in our area, as is the Quality Deer Management Association (QDMA). Both of these organizations are not just focused on the species they were founded to promote, but have a multifaceted mission, which includes habitat improvement. In this realm, they have many publications as well as personnel available to help direct you in the proper development of your plan and its execution. Keep in mind that no matter what you do to better the food sources or cover for one species will most often benefit numerous other species as well. Most conservation organizations have their own biologist on staff, and it is often possible

outline what can be accomplished and how to accomplish it. There are numerous government agencies offering different programs that will assist a landowner in developing and executing a plan and may provide financial assistance as well. Two programs that come to mind are the Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program (CREP) and Environmental Quality Incentive Program (EQIP) programs. The CREP program can cover some of the initial costs of development and a possible yearly rental fee for acreage that is taken out of active production. The goal is to reduce erosion that may occur when actively farming such ground, and the program is generally offered on a 10 or 15-year contract. EQIP has been established to provide financial and technical assistance to agricultural producers to help plan and implement conservation practices that address natural resource concerns and provide opportunities to improve water, soil, plant, and animal and air resources on agricultural land. Whether your goals are to create some immediate income through a timber harvest or improve the long-term value of your timber stand, or you want to add to the current cover available for wildlife use or you are thinking about adding to the food sources for deer, turkeys or grouse by planting soft and hard mast-producing trees and establishing food plots, there is a great deal of expert advice at your fingertips — and it is just for the asking.

Falls From Tree Stands On the Increase

I

guess it should come as no surprise that tree stand accidents are on the increase. If you have been following trends in the world of hunting, it’s also apparent that the use of tree stands has dramatically increased in recent years. When I started hunting in the 60’s a tree stand was a couple of boards nailed to a couple of suitable limbs — a few more pieces of scrap lumber nailed to the tree trunk got you into the stand. I actually killed my first buck, a six-pointer, after I shinnied up a tree trunk and stood on two limbs — fortunately, I didn’t have to

stand their long before the buck walked nearly directly under me and I nailed it. Boy, have things changed when it comes to the pursuit of deer. I have no way of knowing for sure, but I’m guessing that when it comes to archery hunting for deer, I would not be surprised to find that 80 percent of the hunters use some type of tree stand. I’m betting that a very high percentage of hunters use tree stands during the regular rifle season as well. It’s also true that the tree stand market has responded well to our demands with newer and better tree stands of all sizes

and types. With so many hunters turning to the use of tree stands it would also make sense that there are increasingly more tree stand accidents. If you do much hunting, you probably know Ken somebody who fell Hunter or was injured in a tree stand accident. It wasn’t too many years ago a hunter in our area died when his stand gave way. A few years ago a good friend of mine fell from his tree stand and laid on the ground for

some time before someone on a fourwheeler just happened to spot him and get him emergency care. A few years ago while descending a tree with my climber type stand it slipped — fortunately my safety harness did its job, and I only ended up with a black eye when my head bounced off the tree trunk. In an article, I recently read in Pennsylvania Outdoor News Dr. Joseph Smith, a doctor in the intensive care unit at Geisinger Medical Center, has compiled some interesting statistics that may shed some light on what’s going on out there. I’ll try to summarize a bit. Between 1987 and 2015 more than 1,200 people fell out of tree stands here

were “impaired” but not legally drunk? Drug tests were conducted on 285 fall victims, and 14 percent of them had marijuana in their systems. Remember — those same people are driving down the road every day as well. As you might expect Saturdays were the worst day for falls — naturally that’s when most of the hunting occurs. Fifty-two percent fell because of structural failure. Now here’s the number that really caught my eye — 93 percent of those who fell were not wearing a safety harness! I’m out of space for this column, but clearly, we could greatly alter these numbers by doing one simple thing-get a safety harness and wear it!

in Pennsylvania. Bear in mind that these figures do not take into account people who did not choose to receive treatment but only those who sought treatment at an accredited medical center. It was also found that 97 percent of the victims were male. That stands to reason since I assume the vast majority of archery hunters and even gun hunters are male. The average height from which they fell was 17 feet. Researchers believe that 82 percent of the victims were archers. Now here are some numbers that I was shocked to read — of 1,109 victims that were examined, 46 were legally drunk! Those were the ones technically “inebriated”, how many more of them

did not grow up around here. Early on I was treated as a little bit of an outsider because people didn’t know me. I would show up at games back in the 90s wanting to do well, and people would ask ‘who are you?’ As we got to know one another they adopted me as part of their Lycoming County family,” an appreciative Garrison explained. Meeting television deadlines keeps Garrison on the move. “Filming for television is all about good planning. I usually cover two games per each assignment, and I try to keep those games close together geographically. By doing it this way, it reduces my travel time between sites. I can’t cover two games that are far apart. There are those instances when Lycoming is the only game I am covering. That gives me a chance to spend more time

on the field and can cover game action in both halves. “Covering football is a challenge for two reasons. One, you have to endure the weather elements that include rain and snow. Second, there is no guarantee that you will get any points scored in the time you have to cover the game. We like to show touchdowns. We will show field goals, but we want scoring plays. Basketball is much easier to cover because you are indoors and are pretty much-guaranteed points. “I enjoy covering any sporting event, but any time I get to cover a ‘do or die’ game — a win or go home — game; that is always special. That could be week ten in high school football that if a team wins they get the chance to play in the District playoffs. It could be a district championship game

or a state championship game. It doesn’t matter what the sport, those kinds of games always stand out to me because they make a lot of good memories. The crowd is a little more amped up. The players are a little more into it, and the seniors realize this could be the last time they put on a uniform. All those variables come together for me as those ‘do or die’ games are often once in a lifetime games for those involved. For me, I get to experience those kinds of games year after year, but seeing how meaningful those games are to others makes for special memories.” Note: While only snippets of his camera work make the nightly sportscasts, Garrison’s work can be followed more closely on Twitter at @JoeGarrisonNews or by checking out his Facebook page.

Ross Bounced Back After Tough Situation to Lead Loyalsock to Victory

T

he beautiful thing about sports is that there always seems to a be a shot at redemption waiting for those athletes ready to make amends for past performances. It requires work, and a willingness to face the mistakes of the past, to overcome and excel through the new challenges ahead. Recently, Loyalsock’s Gerald Ross was forced into a situation his coach called a possible chance at a “life lesson”. Ross was charged with a technical during a late loss to Montoursville. It contributed to

the Lancer’s deficit. It also took Ross out of the game as Montoursville completed its comeback to avenge a mid-season loss. It was a devastating moment for both the team and the player. Luckily for Loyalsock, the rare moment did little to define the team and player as both bounced back nicely to redeem themselves. Ross posted a team-high 33 points in Loyalsock’s following game, but as a whole, the team played much better during a tough road contest against Jersey Shore.

The Bulldogs are not an easy opponent — especially on the road. The school is known for having a committed student section that loves to support their players. Loyalsock weathered the environment throughout the game to secure a 67-54 win. “Saturday was tough,” Brett Ross said. “We started off Crossley well, but it was just a tough game overall.” Ross opened the game with 13 points to lead the Lancers in scoring. It was an outstanding start to the game. It built a lead and quickly got Ross, who is referred to by his coach as one of the top athletes on the floor regardless of the game, on track. He proved everything his coach said, connecting on multiple shots from difficult angles to keep the defense guessing throughout the opening quarter. The first eight minutes displayed exactly what type of athlete Ross has become over the years. It showed growth both mentally and physically. He distributed the ball well, helping move it around throughout to find open shooters. Mitchell Klingerman benefited greatly from it, nailing seven points over the first minute of the game. He jumped out to clear a three and then followed that with two quick field goals to bring his early totals up and keep Loyalsock motivated. “It was a good start,” Klingerman said. “That good start really helped us in the long

run. It just happened I was at the right place at the right time, and my teammates found me.” Adversity struck for Ross in the middle of the game when Loyalsock’s offense slowed to only scored nine points in the second quarter. It allowed Jersey Shore to come back, but a lapse in defense through the third had it on the ropes. Junior Armstrong matched Ross’s output throughout the third, but Ross and the Lancers just wouldn’t break. A defensive adjustment worked as Loyalsock contained Armstrong enough to hold him to just six fourth-quarter points. As the defense worked to limit the Bulldogs, Ross came back for a strong finish over the final eight minutes to get his team back on track. Again, the basket just appeared to be made for Ross, who barely let the ball hit the floor with his efforts. Ross, an All-State selection in football, overcame a lot for the performance, but it never really showed. He opened with an outstanding effort to get his team in front and continued to lead it throughout the win. “It looked huge,” Ross said of the basket. “I remember I shot a shot from the baseline, didn’t jump and my arms felt heavy, and it still went in. It’s just that night.” Ross will be a key piece for the Lancers moving forward. He has provided valuable leadership, scoring, and athleticism. His ability to overcome difficult situations makes him that much better for Loyalsock. Next: Loyalsock at Danville, Wednesday, 7:30 p.m. Jersey Shore at Selinsgrove, Wednesday, 7:30 p.m.
