Daytona and Monster Bucks
I
t’s hard to believe the month of February is about to be in the review mirror. The Patriots unimaginable fourth-quarter comeback kicked the month off to a fast start. Who would have thunk it, especially after watching the first three quarters of Super Bowl LI. It was off to being remembered as one of the worst championship games ever. I’m sure the Falcons and their coaches have yet to sleep a wink. Meanwhile head coach Bill Belichick and Super Bowl MVP Tom Brady have still got to be waking up and pinching themselves that it really happened along with the rest of the Patriot Nation. Another sure sign February is in the rearview mirror is this weekend’s running of the Daytona 500. An event that was near and dear to my Dad’s heart. He loved traveling down for the race and actually raced in the 24 Hours of Daytona held the weekend before the big event. One of his proudest racing moments was when he actually drove against Dale Earnhardt Sr. and got to have some laughs and a conversation with him after the race. This unfortunately occurred a short time before the tragic accident that claimed Dale’s life at Daytona. Time and racing stops for nobody, it has been 16 years since NASCAR lost their legendary
driver. Another quick family note about Daytona. My grandfather, Phil Maietta, had a racing team that would travel and race on the sands of the Daytona Beach Road Course during the early days of the Great American Race. The race actually took place right on the beach. Along with Charlie Weidler, who was the driver, the two built the car and ran under the name Lycoming Sales Company. This was Pappy Maietta’s business that sold and repaired cars and trucks in Newberry. I’ve been told in 1952 they recorded an 8th place finish. The Daytona 500 is a direct successor of these events. The racing on the beaches of the Daytona area began in 1902. The first ever, official Daytona 500 was run in 1959 at the current location of the Daytona International Speedway. The winner that day was Lee Petty. One of the drivers he defeated that day was, yep you guessed it, a rookie who just happened to be Lee’s son Richard. “The King” went on to be the NASCAR rookie of the year and earned the aforementioned nickname as the greatest driver of his time. And now you know the rest of the story... Switching gears from the beaches of Daytona to the woods of central

efore there was Little League Baseball or even a National Basketball Association, there was the John H. Bower Sunday School Basketball League. This year the league is celebrating its 95th anniversary. This league is the oldest and largest church athletic league in the country and is the oldest youth sports league in the country, predating Little League by 17 years. The league has had several homes during those 95 years, the old gym at the Williamsport YMCA, the gym at Curtin Junior High/Middle School, the Bardo Gym at Penn College, the Pickelner Arena and most recently— the Liberty Arena. The places where the league has played its games have changed but the aims and philosophy have not. According to the league’s bylaws the purpose of the league is, “to work for

the betterment of the Sunday School or church by developing character through athletic contests and by making Sunday school or church attendance a condition of membership in the league.” Participants in the league must submit written proof of attendance at Sunday School. The league is open any church or Sunday School in the Greater Williamsport area. John H. Bower, the man who founded the league was juvenile probation officer and saw the league as a way to set a firm moral foundation for the youth of this area. Through the 95 years of the league’s existence more almost 50,000 youths have participated in it. Many of those who have played in the league over those years have stayed on to render further service to it by becoming coaches and also officers of the league. One of these is Bob Cellini, who first became involved in the league as a player more than 30 years ago. He went on to and continues to be the coach

One of the hallmarks of the Bower League that Cellini points out is that there is a high caliber of people and longevity of those who volunteer to help with the league and who are very dedicated and free with their time in making the league successful. One of the best examples of this was the dedication shown by the late Max and Alta Border. Max was involved in the league for more than 40 years before his death in 1998 and Alta was involved for more than 50 before her passing. At the time of her death, Alta had been serving as the league’s treasurer. My uncle, Harold “Skip” Hunsinger was the chairman of the board of the directors of the league and was involved with the league for 58 years before his death in 2013. Even the advertisers, according to Cellini, have been in it for the long haul. “Even our advertisers have not changed much over the years with most of the 30 sponsoring for over 25 years and a few over 50 years [probably more but cannot find any older records],” Cellini said. He concluded that with that level of dedication he sees no reason why the John H. Bower Sunday School Basketball League can’t continue many years into the future and he believes it has a bright future still ahead of it.
7 • Webb Weekly February 22, 2017
of the St. Ann’s Midget team and also serves as the league’s secretary. Cellini said that currently there are 58 teams in the league and that the league is broken down into several age divisions: Beginners – grades one and two, Pee Wees – grades three and four, Midget – grades five and six, Juniors – grades seven through nine and Seniors – grades 10 through 12. He said there are about 500 kids of both sexes playing in these divisions with about 60 adults serving in volunteer support capacities such as coaches, referees, scorekeepers and league officers. “I really enjoy being a part of this league and helping to coach these kids,” Cellini said. “It provides me with a great deal of satisfaction. Naturally, winning is important, but the great thing about this league is that it is not a winning at all costs type of atmosphere. I think it is the best of what athletic competition is supposed to be. The kids enjoy themselves and form bonds and lasting friendships with both the kids they play with and against. I think it is a way of kids praying together as well as playing together. Hopefully, it is another way to get them to become more active in their churches. I think being involved in the league has helped these kids be better citizens and perhaps have a firmer moral foundation.”

Williamsport Native Was Black Journalistic Pioneer By Lou Hunsinger Jr.
A
s we look back on all of the significant figures and accomplishments of African-Americans during “Black History Month,” it is worth noting that one of the pioneer black journalists and sportswriters is from right here in Williamsport. Frank Albert “Fay” Young is not a household name, but perhaps this remarkable man should be. This Williamsport native was the first full time African-American sportswriter, who promoted the exploits of athletes from “Rube” Foster, Josh Gibson, Jesse Owens, and Joe Louis, to members of the excellent black college teams. He was also a tireless crusader for the integration of Major League Baseball. Not much is known of Young’s early life. What is known is that he was born in Williamsport in 1884 and by the age of eight was orphaned and moved from the area. Much of the following information comes from the Biography Resource Center at Bucknell University. Young may have come by his writing talents naturally because his grandmother, Julia C. Collins, also of Williamsport, is reportedly the first black woman in America to publish a novel, The Curse of Caste in 1865. Young attended high school in both Massachusetts and Illinois and by the age of 16 was selling newspapers on the south side of Chicago. The newspaper he was selling was the Chicago Defender, one of this nation’s top newspapers, a newspaper he would write for and edit off and on for more than 40 years. He also worked as a railroad dining car waiter
and his ability to gather bits of news from other waiters, porters and barbers and collect various newspapers provided him information about the exploits of various black athletes and turning these tidbits into stories for the Chicago Defender brought him the notice of the Defender’s publisher, Robert Abbott. Young then became a full-time writer for the Defender but his pay was paltry, so he had to do other work such as working as a waiter and working at the post office during the Christmas rush. Young contributed to every aspect of publishing the Defender and even cooked for the night crew as they proofread galleys. When Booker T. Washington died in 1915, Young put out a special edition, a single-page tribute to Washington’s life, and personally distributed copies to the ministers at black churches in the area. The next year he was named managing editor at a salary of twentyfive dollars a week. He quickly changed jobs to become city editor and then sports editor. It was at this time that Young became the first full-time, black sportswriter and editor in the country. When the Negro National League was formed in 1920 by Andrew “Rube” Foster in 1920, Young became one its most enthusiastic boosters and had a warm relationship with Foster, whose team, the Chicago American Giants was one of the league’s early powerhouses. As the official scorer and statistician for the Negro National League from its inception in 1920 until its dissolution in 1931, Young advocated for

the inclusion of blacks in the major leagues. He also criticized the Baseball Umpires Association for the bad umpiring by white officials at games played by black teams and called for the hiring of black umpires. During the 1920s he covered all types of sports including the World Series, various championship boxing bouts, and track and field events. He was a key figure in the expansion of the sports programs of the nation’s black colleges, particularly those at Tuskegee Institute. He was the founder of the Prairie View Bowl Game in 1929, the first black post-season football bowl game. The money ravages of the Depression caused Young to leave the Defender in 1934 and he spent the next three years as the managing editor of another major black newspaper, the Kansas City Call. When another Negro League was formed in 1937, the Negro American League, Young served as its secretary from 1939 to 1948. Young along with other major black sportswriters such as Sam Lacy and Wendell Smith, were tireless in their efforts to bring down the color barrier in Major League Baseball. They constantly cajoled and pressured Commissioner Kennesaw Mountain Landis and other baseball officials to seriously consider the possibility of allowing black players to play in the Major Leagues. It was through their efforts and the courage of Branch Rickey that Jackie Robinson was given the chance to break the color barrier in 1947. “Fay Young was a tremendously important journalistic figure who spanned the time of the beginning of the Negro leagues in 1920 until Jackie Robinson in 1947,” Brian Carroll, a

journalism professor at Barry College in Georgia and an authority on black sportswriters, said at a conference of Negro League historians in 2009 in Pittsburgh. “He was a tireless champion for the Negro Leagues and promoted major activities such as the league’s East-West All-Star Game. He even wrote some paternalistic columns telling black fans how they should behave at Negro League games and later at games that Jackie Robinson was playing at for the Brooklyn Dodgers.” Larry Lester, chairman of the Negro Leagues Research Committee of the Society of American Baseball Research, considers Young an, “extremely important journalistic figure along with Wendell Smith, Sam Lacy and Joe Bostic.” His interests also ran to areas other than sports. Young helped establish Tennessee A & I State University’s poultry program. He was honored when the school named its new poultry building after him on Thanksgiving Day, 1953. Young also was involved with other agricultural projects in horticulture and stock breeding. Young died on October 27, 1957 of what was believed to be an intestinal obstruction. Among the pallbearers at his funeral were track stars Jesse Owens and Ralph Metcalfe. In an article of tribute in Ebony magazine, journalist and colleague A. S. Young, [no relation], called Fay Young the, “patron saint of black college athletics.” An obituary published in the Defender wrote of Young, “Oh, he would grumble and one would believe he was the meanest fellow in the world, but deep down in his heart there was a soft spot, and it could be reached by anyone with a hearttouching story.”

This Week’s LION Your Heart By Larry Stout
T
he purpose of this column, Leaders in Our Neighborhood (LION), is to recognize the “lions” in our midst who do exceptional things but are rarely appreciated. In light of February being National Heart Awareness Month, it seemed appropriate to consider a member of our very own bodies that is not appreciated enough—our heart. It seems ridiculous to state the obvious, but we cannot live without our heart. Every other part of our body may fail, including the brain, but it is not until our heart quits working that we say our final goodbye to this earthly world. It would seem that given this fact, one of the main concerns in life should be to give proper care to this invaluable instrument within us. Unfortunately, this is rarely the case. We should consider three vital areas; exercise, stress, and emotion. Exercise is important for a variety of reasons: to increase strength and flexibility, improve energy levels, control weight, sleep better, etc., but one of the most important
is to reduce the rate of heart disease. Studies have shown that exercise is as effective in reducing the risk of heart disease as medication, and in fact, in those patients who already had suffered a stroke, physical activity interventions are more effective than drug treatment. (ref: http://www.bmj. com/content/347/bmj.f5577) (Disclaimer: ensure that you consult your physician before embarking on any rigorous exercise program). A simple formula for the semiregular visitor to the fitness center is the 220 Rule. This is a general rule of thumb, but is a useful guideline. Start with 220, subtract your age, and this gives you a maximum heart rate. Exercising at 7080 percent of this rate for fifteen minutes, three times a week, significantly reduces the risk of heart disease. So, using myself as an example, I subtract my age, 65, from 220, and I get 155 as a maximum heart rate. Seventy percent is 110, Eighty percent is 125, so if I can get my heart rate around 115120 or so for fifteen minutes, I am giving my heart a good workout. I take my time getting

to that rate, sometimes as much as ten to fifteen minutes, and cool down as well, so my time on the elliptical bike generally takes me around 30 minutes or a little longer. Lots of benefit from a short investment of time. Keeping down stress levels is also important for the heart. Stress awareness originated with the pioneering work of Hans Selye in the 1960s who termed his discovery GAS – General Adaptation Syndrome. It became more popularized with the work of Meyer Friedman and Ray Rosenman in the early 1970s who were studying the differences in dietary cholesterol between male victims of heart disease and their wives. One of the wives commented, “If you really want to know what is giving our husbands heart attacks, I’ll tell you. It’s stress, the stress they receive at work, that’s what’s doing it!” Daniel Goleman, in his best-selling book Emotional Intelligence, illustrates this concept using an example of a man who sees a snake in the woods. Instantly, the visual signal is ‘high jacked’ by the brain from the cognitive (thinking) part of the brain and routed to the emotional center, the amygdala, which then processes it for the ‘fight or flight’ response. This also triggers a physiological response in the body; boost of adrenaline, increased pulse rate, perspiration, etc. Keep in mind; while this is happening the brain is not ‘thinking’, it is programmed for action. Remember when the teacher
stood directly behind you when you were taking a test, and suddenly your brain goes blank? The teacher is acting in the brain like the snake in the woods. Your body is saying, “get me out of here!” The same thing happens when the boss storms in the office and asks why a report is late. The response is physiological—and it affects the heart. Here is the catch—it takes at least three to four hours before the body goes back to a ‘pre-snake’ status. Now, imagine the office scenario where the boss makes the demand, and then appears an hour later with another demand that triggers a ‘fight or flight’ response. This ‘second snake’ gets mounted physically on top of the first one. Ever wonder why you might be physically exhausted at the end of a working day and never left your desk? This is why. Practicing good stress management techniques through emotional health can literally be adding years to your life. And this ties in with anger management as well. Anyone with anger issues is seriously jeopardizing their life. Those with a heart condition are 2.3 times more likely to have a heart attack when they are angry. A practical solution—go to church! Studies have shown that those who attend religious services more than once a week, compared to persons who do not attend at all, have a lower prevalence of coronary heart disease, diabetes and high blood pressure. It will be good for your heart in more ways than one!

most effective is to iron your piece of clothing. But, when you’re in a pinch, try spritzing it down with some wrinkle release spray. If you don’t happen to have that type of product on hand, try hanging it up in the bathroom with a hot shower running to steam away the wrinkles. If you want to conserve water, squirt a small amount of H2O on your garment, then blow it dry with a hair dryer. This is a great fix when you’re traveling, as most hotels/motels have hairdryers on hand for guests.
Busted Buttons always seem to pop off at the absolute worse time, which is why handy dressers keep a travel sewing-kit at their desk, in their car, and purse. I, for one, am all thumbs when it comes to threading a needle. So I’ve gotten pretty deft at quick fixes that involve tape, paperclips, and/or safety pins. It’s not the most elegant solution, but with some trial and error, reimagined office supplies can see you through the day. Being In a Style Rut is a less obvious
dilemma than wrinkles and stains, but it can be quite a downer when your clothes bore you. Now, there’s nothing wrong with having a style uniform, and go-to outfits that fit your lifestyle, but sometimes these looks can get stale. To reboot your tried-and-true ensembles, incorporate statement accessories, like necklaces, scarves, and belts. If you’re feeling really adventurous, slip on some of this season’s squared heels to bring your uniform up to date. Speaking of heels, while they can energize a look, they can also do a number on your feet. To avoid Heel Pain and blisters, reach for the tape.
Nude medical tape works best, or you can use plain old Scotch tape if need be. Either way, taping your third and fourth toes together relieves pressure on the ball of your foot, and helps prevent blisters. Sounds kind of whacky, but it works. What also works is wearing hose, tights, or socks with your heels to protect your feet. Dressing dilemmas can come in any shape and form. With any luck, you’ll never have a major wardrobe malfunction. For minor inconveniences, these solutions will get you back on your feet (pain free) in no time!

Regional Musicians in a Spin Over Log Boom Records By Jeffrey Allen Federowicz
M
any years floated by since Williamsport had a log boom, that is until the currents recently changed. Now the former Lumber Capital of the World once again has a Log Boom, however, instead of timber this one deals with tunes. The newly formed Log Boom Records, Williamsport’s own music label, will assist seasoned musicians through the unknown waters of creating and releasing a professional CD. “From finding a high caliber studio, selecting the right mix of music, copyright laws and a lot more details most musicians wouldn’t even think of,” said Williamsport based musician Sean Farley. “Just as important as creating a quality CD is successfully marketing it and having the CD reach as many individuals as possible. Not just regionally but also the many online outlets that allow somebody from down the street to across the globe access to an entire album or single track.” Nearly a year in the making, Log Boom Records is the vision come true of local musicians and a core group of business professionals that help the local music scene thrive. “For a city the size of Williamsport, its pretty amazing the talent that can be found around the area,” Farley said. “From award winning blues musicians to soulful musicians performing everything from classic rock, jazz, country, new age, folk, Americana and soul.” Is Log Boom Records geared towards the high school junior wanting to record the songs she penned about her new puppy and breaking up with her boyfriend? No.
LYCOMING COUNTY RESOURCE MANAGEMENT SERVICES
As with any record label, prospective customers of Log Boom Records will need to meet certain criteria. Like any new business, Log Boom Records is starting out slowly and will grow to meet the needs of regional performers. “Live & Temperamental,” Farley’s second solo album is the first official release by Log Boom Records. A detailed web site for Log Boom Records will be up and running soon. On Feb. 22 a release party and performance will be held at The Capital Lounge inside The Community Arts Center. “Live & Temperamental” was recorded live at Temperamental Recordings Studio in upstate New York last July in front of a studio audience. The album was mixed by Grammy-nominated engineer and musician, Mike Brown. “I am so excited about this release. Not only is this my first live recording, its also the first release for Log Boom Records,” Farley said. The recording is a collection of original tunes performed with Farley’s distinctive Americana and blues style that’s made him one of the most popular and highly regarded musicians in the Susquehanna Valley and beyond. To promote his new CD, Farley will embark on a month long tour throughout California, Arizona and Colorado. This makes his sixth tour through western states. For now he’s concentrating on the release party and his local gigs. “I hope everyone comes out to The Capital Lounge for a fun night of original music and to learn more about Log Boom Records and support local music.” For more information on Sean Farley’s music and ticket information visit www.seanfarlymusic.com

I
f plans, which are as yet tentative, do not miscarry, work on 200-room modern hotel will be underway in due time at the northeast corner of Fourth and Pine Streets. While the building project is under contemplation, no definite arrangements have been made. All of the options are not in hand,
and while the manager will probably be David Olmstead of Cleveland, operating a chain of hotels in Ohio and Pennsylvania, the contract has not been closed. The site which was selected from seven prospective ones by Mr. Olmstead, includes the Emory block and properties in rear north to Edwin Street, together
with 100 feet on the rear of the Dr. E.H. Campbell property, now owned by H.I. Ferguson and Frank W. Hayes, thus giving the hotel a frontage of 53 feet on Fourth Street, and on Pine Street and 104 on Edwin Street. Once the options are in hand a campaign will be organized to finance the project, which it is estimated will require at least $900,000, while $175,000 more will be required to furnish the hotel. This latter burden however, will fall upon the operating company, which will give the hotel company first lien on the furnishings as security for fulfillment of the lease. The operating company will also pay the hotel company six percent
on the land investment and will pay insurance, taxes and provide for repairs and upkeep. The negotiations are in the hands of the following hotel committee of the Board of Trade: Robert H. Ahles of the Sweet Steel Company, Robert Gilmore of the Williamsport Wire Rope Company, R.G. Brownell of the Central Pennsylvanian Lumber Company, William P. Beeber, president of the First National Bank, Watson Barclay of the Barclay Chemical Company, Henry D. Brown, president of the Williamsport Water Company. President W.B. Milliner, of the Board of Trade, has also been very active on behalf of the project. PA #121099

The Roving Sportsman The North versus the South By Jon Pries
T
here are many times that people draw references to the differences between the North and the South. History points out some of the cultural differences and certainly the Civil War brought to head the clash of diverse ideals held by the Confederate soldiers and the Union soldiers, as well as those who supported one side or the other. Those things are pretty well relegated now to history books. Today, when someone is referred to as a “Yankee” or as a “Rebel,” it
is most often said in jest – in a light hearted manner, with no ill intentions. In reality, as I have traveled throughout the South over the years, I can truly say that Southerners and Northerners have common core values and senses of humor. There are good folks everywhere. However, that is not really what I wanted to talk about. What I truly want to point out are the opportunities that about and the differences that exist. Growing up in north central Pennsylvania provided an excellent backdrop for the formative years of youth and there was an abundance of outside
activities to keep a budding explorer and outdoor enthusiast quite busy. But, there was a point at which I became aware of a group of individuals and families that were known in both the North and the South as “Snowbirds.” At the time, it just didn’t make sense to me. “Why, for Heaven’s sake would anyone want to run away from all of the fun winter time activities that the cool temperatures and frequent snowfalls provided?” I thought. Then, as time slipped by – decade after decade – it slowly became clear to me. One’s blood does not seem to flow as well, joints tend to ache in the colder temperatures and the joy of chipping ice and shoveling snow just wasn’t as much fun as it once was. In fact, it had evolved into nothing less and nothing more than a chore! Suddenly, being
a “Snowbird” made all the sense in the world! To the fishermen in the North who were restricted to fishing for their prey through a hole in the ice, there was a true cornucopia of fishing in fresh and salt water that was available by merely heading south to a warmer climate! Throughout the South, there exists world-class fishing for bass, tarpon, bonefish, snook, sharks, cobia, and mahi-mahi - and on and on… Hunters in the north country who have had their fill of snow, mud, ice and freezing temperatures can travel to many locations throughout the southern states to take up hunting for feral hogs (truly an exciting time – and the meat they provide is excellent table fare), quail hunting, hunting for numerous exotic species on many large ranches and

60’s and daytime temperatures rise to the high 70’s and low 80’s – usually under “bluebird” skies. Oh, yes, there is also all of that freshdaily seafood! Fish of every imaginable variety, shrimp, lobsters, scallops, and lots of oysters! And it is not hard to find a large number of great restaurants that serve up your favorite dishes. Don’t forget Southernfried chicken, and fried chicken livers and fried chicken gizzards – they really are tasty! Rinse it all down with what some call “The National Drink of the South” – sweet tea. I truly hope I have peaked your interest a bit, and you seriously consider a jaunt to the South to enjoy all that it offers. A week here and a week there, and who knows, maybe you too will someday be called a “Snowbird!”

Sucker Spawn can be tied from different materials and in a wide range of colors, but two come highly recommended. Angora spun fur in tan or buff, and Sparkle Yarn in gold. Sucker Spawn flies are quick and easy to tie (just a series of loops attached to the hook), and are very productive. This makes them a must-have pattern in your fly box. Three Essential Documents for Estate and Medicaid Planning Your Will is the basic estate planning document in which you name the person, the Executor, who will settle your estate and in which you set forth how your estate will be distributed. This will may contain one or more trusts for the benefit of spouse, children, grandchildren or others including special needs folks. One very important part of the will, especially for nursing home planning is a bypass clause to protect against your estate going to an institutionalized spouse. Most wills do not have this bypass clause and that can be a grievous and expensive omission. Your Power of Attorney names someone to do your business for you if you are unable to do so yourself. A well drafted durable POA is imperative if you become disabled and have to enter a nursing home. The problem is that once you become disabled you may not be able to correct a deficient POA and are stuck with it; this also can be a grievous and expensive error. Separate POAs may be used for financial or medical issues or they can be combined into one. Your Living Will is sometimes called an Advance Directive and states your preference as to whether or not you want extraordinary life-prolonging technologies. It only applies if you cannot otherwise communicate with the medical staff concerning end of life decisions. With these 3 essential documents professionally prepared for your unique circumstances by attorneys experienced and knowledgeable in the issues faced by older generations you can feel reasonably assured that you have in place the tools you will need to face these issues. The attorneys at Greevy & Shoemaker would be happy to review your essential documents at no charge to assure that they meet your needs. Please feel free to call for a free document review appointment.

good one. Even now with the modern rifles I have in my collection I still adhere to that same principle—if you don’t think you can make a reasonably good kill shot—don’t shoot. Granted, I don’t always have perfect results but I have never had a difficult time getting off a second or third shot if need be with my lever-action .308 Winchester. I guess I have a little wiggle room though; I would probably not have a problem with semi-autos for coyote hunting but that’s about it for me. I’m sure there are others however who are all for the use of semi-autos for all hunting. It will be interesting to see where the Game Commission is on this one.

There are those who may be willing to ‘meet somewhere in the middle’ so to speak or in other words allow semis for small game but not big game like deer and bear. There are also those who may go along with the idea of semi-autos for big game provided clips are limited in shell capacity just like other deer rifles. Where am I on this one? Well for what’s it worth, I spent many of my early years hunting with the only gun I had access to and that was a single barrel, 20 gauge H&R which was loaded with a single shell with a hunk of lead. you’re playing, and you really don’t get a chance to reflect on it while you’re playing. But I’m glad I ended it this way,” Pierce said afterward. That Pierce love affair in Boston was 180 degrees different than what former Oklahoma City Thunder great Kevin Durant encountered one week later when his now Golden State Warriors visit OKC for the first time since he left the team as a free agent to join the Warriors last July. The weeklong media hype build-up started immediately after the Super Bowl as speculation as to what type of greeting Durant would receive from his spurned former Thunder fans. To coin a phrase one could say it was ‘thunderous’. He was booed and vilified as various chants and signs left no doubt that Durant’s decision to leave the Thunder to join the team that the Durant-led Thunder couldn’t beat in last year’s NBA playoffs came to pass. Durant himself had the last laugh as Golden State easily beat the Thunder with KD scoring a team high 34 points. Professional sports are all about winning and Durant and his new Warriors team have the best record in the NBA. But despite the message contained in the Thomas Wolfe novel, You Can’t Go Home Again, Paul Pierce proved that is can be successfully accomplished. Kevin Durant? Not so much!

five minutes he retreated to the bench. At quarter’s end the Celtics scoreboard played a video tribute that showed Pierce holding up the 2008 NBA championship trophy and the team’s championship banner. Cameras panned to Pierce on the Clippers’ bench with his eyes growing red as the tears flowed. Throughout the game, which culminated in a Celtics victory, Pierce was serenated with continuous chants of ‘we want Paul’, ‘The Truth’ and ‘Thank you Paul Pierce.’ With 19.8 seconds remaining in the game, Pierce came back into the game and delivered a moment that was unforgettable even for a 19-year veteran who has had plenty of them on his ledger. Seconds later he received a pass and drilled a 28-foot three-pointer with 11 seconds left. The joyous fans had seen him do that so many times before and for Pierce his only points of the game insured that he had scored in every game he had played in Boston. “It was a tough situation. I had been sitting for the past two hours and then come in there and get a shot. There was a lot of emotion and my teammates felt it too. At least I can say I put one last bucket in at the end of the game. I never felt anything like this. I truly appreciated my time here and appreciated how the fans treated me. that is why I am filled with joy when I see my eight-year-old son outside doing the same. He loves the game too. We spend lots of time on the hardwood together. Sporting Matters with Spence…
points per game go up at least 25% each year at every level. Except for my PORT days. Kenny kept track. I can’t remember my very first pair of basketball sneakers, nor do I think it really mattered. Hmm. A few of my friends had the original Jordans or the Reebok Pumps and of course I was jealous. But most of my kicks were always reasonably priced. Sure, my teammates and friends knew me as the preppy white boy from the east end, but I never put much emphasis on my hoop shoe swag. By the time we got to high school Coach Pete White hooked us up with TEAM shoes. I had very little input, but I was grateful. Halfway through my senior year one of my cheap NIKE AIRs broke. Since I was the ninth player on his eight-man rotation, I didn’t qualify for a replacement. Instead of buying the $125 KOBEs, I decided to rock my best friend’s indoor soccer shoes for the remainder of the season. True story. I was that guy wearing a pair of Adidas Sambas during warm-ups of the 1995 AAAA State Championship Game. I didn’t play. #coachesdecision. Jensen is quite the opposite when it comes to his sneakers. The kid already has an extensive collection. I always thought I’d be that parent who would never go overboard for a pair of shoes. Well I finally caved this XMAS and shelled out some bread for the Curry 2s. I created a monster. Now he can’t stop obsessing about basketball shoes. His wealthy Aunt Kelley from CA can share in some of the blame. But this is insane. What just happened? Over priced sneakers just pole vaulted over Pokémon and replaced Minecraft as the number one thing that all eight-year-old kids now talk about. It’s embarrassing. I reached out to a few of my former players and
friends who were also obsessed and rabid shoe fans. I was hoping they’d offer some suggestions on how I could stop this madness. Cameron St. James is a senior from nearby Montgomery. I got to know him well as he played for me for two seasons. St. James is one the area’s best guards and I believe he led all of District IV in scoring. He recently tallied his 1,000th career point. Quite an achievement. Cameron just loves his shoes. I used to joke when he showed up to a practice every Monday with new kicks. St. James mentioned he had 38 different pairs of basketball sneakers. Say what? “Shoes are a way to express yourself on the court,” Cameron explained. “And in basketball certain kicks give you a sort of swagger and make you feel more like that player.” My best friend Paul McGinn has a ridiculous amount. He has been collecting Nike Air Jordans well since they came out. Paul lost count at the boxes of shoes he currently has. I’d guess it’s somewhere in the hundreds. No joke. “I collect sneakers for several reasons,” Coach McGinn Snapchatted. “I collect kicks because I am a fan. I collect kicks because it somehow still gives me credibility with the young kids. I collect kicks because of the cats I’ve built friendships with standing in line at the mall in the early morning hours of a random Saturday morning. Shout out to Rome. Shout out to Florida. Shout out to Darry.” “It’s beyond functionality,” Paul continued. “It’s about scoopin’ up the coolest, rarest, and most exclusive kicks no matter the cost. On release days, our area gets limited inventory. If you were lucky enough to cop a pair, you couldn’t wait to show them off that night or Monday at school.” I sure hope that Jensen is just going through a phase. My brain hurts. Sporting matters. Yo Mike. Is it the shoes? #cheers
