Another neat fact Abby filled me in on was that she and her father had seen the buck during bear season almost at the exact same spot it showed up on that fateful day. Dad has done a great job in teaching his children about the outdoors and hunting. This was Abby’s sixth buck. She has harvested three with a bow and three with a rifle. I think it’s safe to say she’s good with both weapons. Brian was proud to tell me that Abby just loves to hunt and especially enjoyed an antelope hunt they were on together. This is also true for the entire family; they love spending time together in the outdoors. I almost forgot to mention Mom also loves to hunt. Unfortunately, she has been inflicted with Lyme disease, which is truly a growing problem in our area. The good news is Brandy did manage to get out once this past season and harvested a beautiful 8-point buck. Tip of the fluorescent orange hunting cap to her also! First prize for Abby’s efforts is a shoulder mount courtesy of Poust Taxidermy. Dana has been providing his great work since we began the contest and I thank him. o many people, the former Weldon’s Pajama Factory building is just an old factory building. Now known as the “Pajama Factory”, it now has a wide variety of artsy type businesses now located within it, but recently it has now something even more special. It has been placed on the National Registry of Historic Places. This is a prestigious and highly sought after designation according to the website of the National Park Service, “The National Register of Historic Places is the official list of the Nation’s historic places worthy of preservation. Authorized by the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, the National Park Service’s National Register of Historic Places is part of a national program to coordinate and support public and private efforts to identify, evaluate, and protect America’s historical and archeological resources.” Mark and Suzanne Winkelman, owners of the property, are thrilled and pleased with this new designation. “This building complex is a cornerstone of the city,” Mark told Webb Weekly. “We have people visit the building all the

time who speak of their family members who used to work here when it was a manufacturing center.” Winkleman said the designation on the National Historical Registry was in the works a long time, until the architecture team of Glenn Vernon and Claudia Albertin of Albertin Vernon Architects of Loganton, PA, pulled it together. They wrote a very compelling story of the Lycoming Rubber Company and its connection to the early industrialization movement in this country. “This designation has greatly opened up funding possibilities and sources for us,” Winkleman said. “It will enable us to be able to do a lot of things with the complex and make additional improvements.” He said one of the funding sources is a global business leader from out-of-state; a patron of the arts who believes in the mission and vision of the Pajama Factory and has secured a $1,000,000 line of credit for the next big project there. This funding is currently planned to fund the following construction projects at the Pajama Factory: • Complete the passenger elevator, which will provide full access to upper floors —with an opportunity to develop a rooftop restaurant/garden

• Support Muscle Groups and Stabilize Joints • • Promote Healing and Recovery •

dark room, art gallery, and bicycle recycle shops for public use is growing into its 13,000 square feet of space. The Pajama Factory located at Rose St. and Park Ave., started out life in 1882 as the home of the Lycoming Rubber Company. It was a subsidiary of the U.S. Rubber Company and made arctics, tennis shoes, Keds sneakers, shoes for yachting and gymnasium use as well as some miscellaneous rubber-related products. The local factory was one of the largest manufacturers of all kinds of rubber goods in the United States. It had the reputation of having a harmonious relationship between labor and management that resulted in high earnings, job security, high morale among workers, and good working conditions. During a downturn in the economy the factory was closed between 1910 and 1916, but with an upturn in the economy, due in large part to the fighting in Europe during World War I, the plant re-opened and largely expanded its facilities. During the period from 1916 to 1932 Lycoming Rubber Company, and the employees of the plant, turned out more than 12,000 pairs of rubber footwear a day. The advent of “The Great Depression” brought about the demise of Lycoming Rubber in Williamsport. A drastic decline in the demand for its products brought about a decision in 1932 to move the local plant’s work to U.S. Rubber’s plant

Future plans, in addition to the planned construction in the coming year, include the creation of 65 loft residences, another 50 work studios, and an additional 30,000 square feet of retail space. Other additions include a farm to table restaurant with a 5th-floor roof garden, an excellent Pennsylvania rye whiskey distillery, an artisanal food market, and two thriving event spaces. High-speed fiber internet service has been brought into and distributed throughout the complex. in Naugatuck, Conn., ending an almost 50-year rubber manufacturing industry in Williamsport. Beginning in 1934, various tenants called the former Rubber Company plant home, including, Franklin Hosiery Mills, Faxon Fabrics, W.S. Green Shoe Company, Lucille Footwear, Wundies, Inc., and the Weldon Manufacturing Company — the world’s largest shirt and pajama manufacturer at the time. It owned the property the Weldon Pajama Company began leasing space in the former Lycoming Rubber Company factory complex. They had a small presence there until it was decided on January 6, 1951, to purchase the entire complex and make it into a large factory operation for the Weldon Company. Weldon’s acquired the complex for $350,000 and made good use of the more than 300,000 square feet of floor space that existed there. They also did about $100,000 in renovations to the complex. By the mid-1950s the Weldon’s plant was the largest pajama factory in the world. It also made sports shorts as well. The Lucille Footwear Company was also housed in the complex during this time. Weldon’s gained its greatest fame nationally and internationally in connection with the Broadway musical, and later the movie, “The Pajama Game.” When noted Broadway producer George Abbott was preparing for the Broadway production of “The Pajama Game,” he

sent representatives to the local Weldon’s factory to get a feel for it and to take many photographs of it so that they could faithfully represent a pajama factory as part of the backdrops for the theatrical production. When the film was made, set designers and other technical people did the same thing, as well as taking things to use as props as part of the film to give the film a realistic look. Weldon’s, which was then owned by the Harwood Company, closed its doors as a factory on November 2, 1979, about 300 employees were displaced as a result of its closing. The closing resulted in the decline in the sale of sleepwear and cheaper foreign competition. Weldon’s continued to operate a factory outlet store for a number of years after its closing. Along the same lines, the Cobbler’s Shoe Factory operated an outlet store from 1979 until the early 1990s. In recent years the former Weldon’s complex, then known as the Raytown complex, owned by Ray Smith, housed restaurants, a nightclub, a dance studio for line dancing and the Equinox Company that manufactures fleece-related products and some clothing on a small scale. In 2007 a group of New York City area entrepreneurs headed by Winkleman acquired the Pajama Factory complex and transformed it into a location for diverse artisan studios and related businesses.

OPEN TO DISCUSSION As old taboos fall away and people become more accustomed to talking about issues that previous generations might have avoided, increasing numbers of individuals are feeling more comfortable about discussing death and funerals. By preplanning their own funerals, thoughtful individuals assure themselves of the peace of mind that comes with knowing their wishes have been made known and that the details will be taken care of. Those who make advance plans can draw great comfort from the fact that their loved ones will not have to make important decisions during the emotional turmoil that often accompanies initial grief. From a practical standpoint, funeral preplanning also controls the cost of the funeral and protects insurance payouts to beneficiaries. For the same reasons you write a will or buy life insurance, people feel that it is a good idea to prepare for the future and make their own, personal plans. At the time of an actual funeral, most decisions need to be made within a few hours. By preplanning the service options, you can take your time and make the decisions in an unhurried and thoughtful way. To learn more about our services, please call KNIGHT-CONFER FUNERAL HOME at 570-323-7717. YWCA Launches Racial Justice Essay Contest

T

he YWCA Northcentral PA announced a special opportunity for students across Lycoming County to participate in an essay competition about racial justice. The essay’s prompt asks students to write about how racism has impacted their life and how they are working to eliminate racism and promote peace in their community. Students from all local school districts recently received the necessary information and entry form. All necessary materials are available at www.ywcawilliamsport.org. Students from ages 10-18 years old can participate by crafting a 750 to 1,000-word paper, due by 4:30 p.m. on April 16, to the YWCA, 815 W. Fourth St., or via email to CEO Dawn Linn at

dlinn@ywcawilliamsport.org. There will be one winner from each age category who will receive a $25 gift card for themselves and a $250 gift card for their teacher to use in the classroom. The categories are 10-12 years old, 13-15 years old and 16-18 years old. All submitted essays will be read by a group of diverse judges whom will select three winners. The first phrase in the YWCA’s mission statement is to eliminate racism. The passion to achieve equality is deeply rooted in the organization as a whole. With this essay contest, we are encouraging students across the county to think about race and how people treat one another. Having those conversations can be difficult but if we continue to sweep them under the rug, there is no hope for change.

Winter Olympics: Lycoming County Style

S

ome of you may be glued to the tube watching the 2018 Winter Olympics being held in Pyeongchang, South Korea, but I feel they have nothing on us — including the scenery. Spare the airfare and parka. Better yet, from what I’ve seen, most residents here are participants, not observers in our own winter fest. Don’t believe me? Read on! Figure skating: the black ice on local parking lots, sidewalks, and driveways gives us mere mortals the opportunity to do a tri-axle or double side swirl on occasion. A real YouTube moment for everyone to see your superb balance and finesse. In fact, if I had a scorecard, I would flash it to them for pulling off such a great, back saving stunt! The Olympic athletes have trained every day for years on end to make living on ice look easy. You and I don’t, which makes our accomplishments of not falling on ice even more incredible. Now, I am aware some of them have to hold their partner above their head during competition. Big deal. You have to battle icy terrain while holding groceries in one arm and a child in the other. Fumbling for car keys at the same time. Now that’s really going for gold! The luge: putting a sleek, custom-made

sled down a purposely built track and going fast is a sight to behold at the Olympic Games. So is watching youngsters and adults tackle the large, snow packed hills in our area with tubes, saucers or sleds. Some adults don’t exactly fit onto their devices in tidy fashion. Square peg into a round hole. No matter. It takes them where they Gerry want to be in a mad rush. Ayers It’s a matter of picking up speed, then more, then letting out an exuberant scream as they execute a whoop de doo. They bottom out. That means rear end meets terra firma. I watch them fall off their device and slide down the hill face first, snacking on crusty ice chunks on the way down. Breakfast of champions! Let it be said our Olympic uniforms are pretty staid compared to what I see the kids wearing on our downhill slopes; where else can you combine a purple jacket, orange striped scarf, a red wool cap with yellow puff ball on top, and black gloves, with pink boots. Some featuring animal figures on them. Gold medal for fashion — and function! Cross-country skiing: endurance is a key factor here to ski hard and long over frozen tundra, and to beat the clock while doing it. I think Lycoming County residents also fare well in the daily grind of going “cross

house for fresh air to fill your lungs, and escape the computer and TV screens. Second, the fortitude to practice their skills for what normally is a summer activity. Question. Do they make special winter-tread wheels for skateboards? You might ask me if I watch or follow the 2018 winter games. In a word, no. In several words, I’d rather watch the locals traverse our hills and valleys. Sure, the athletes at the Olympics have trained ruthlessly and deserve some spotlight. I said some, not all. Frankly, we have many interesting and inspiring people in our area who aren’t asked for autographs, both young and old. It’s not uncommon for athletes to rise at 4:00 a.m. to lift weights, run and train. So do many dialysis and chemo and radiation patients who look for new life, not a medal. Many parents work overtime hours, then have to cook, clean, and get the kids ready for bed. That’s not just a one-day event for a podium finish; it’s a daily commitment. No wonder many of us look like we play a continuous hockey game day in and day out! In other words, common people with uncommon dedication in our backyard. Their fancy Olympic Village and some overpriced stadiums are only temporary. We, on the other hand, are here for the long haul. So as much as I’d like to write about Olympic heroes, and their backgrounds, struggles, and fame, it becomes pretty apparent we’ve got plenty of “medal winners” around here who deserve as much ink. Open your eyes and look as I did. And you won’t even need to hunt down a red, white and blue uniform.

country” to work and school. City and school bus drivers aren’t ever content with a bronze finish. The Olympians only have to deal with their opponent, weather conditions, and a set course. We have to tackle nasty road conditions, zero visibility on occasion, and careless fellow drivers who were prime candidates for self-driving cars over a decade ago! The athletes risk a cold face and cramps. Meanwhile, as fog and snow beckon on Route 15 and the Turkey Ranch, we risk our lives! Snowboarding: American, Redmond Gerard, took home gold in this event. He whirled and twisted high in the air as if God wanted humans to do this feat all along. Emergency rooms suggest otherwise. Not to take anything away from Redmond, but I saw three local dudes (let’s call them Danny, Dweezle, and Derrick) skateboarding on a sub-freezing afternoon on a frozen parking lot doing jumps, stunts and slides. They “caught air” several times, either while flipping the board or falling harshly to the ground. A rock hard, cold ground. It was a dazzling display of bravery, modestly dressed in, uh, short sleeve t-shirts and denim jeans. Back in the day, my body could absorb the bumps. I also dressed warmer than these young Turks. Now, it’s painful just to watch them fall and grimace. But they get up and smile and laugh. That’s called being resilient. And that my friend, breeds some of the best local talent we have! Kudos (and a medal) to these teens for two reasons. First, for getting out of the

things? News flash: you don’t know everything. You might think you do but, no, you don’t, and that’s where “The Science of Why2” comes in. Jay Ingram is about to school you on the things you didn’t learn in school. Is it possible, for instance, to bring back dinosaurs, like in the movies? The why not is interesting but what’s better is why woolly mammoths may be a different story. So is the tale of why ancient people might not’ve had the color blue. Closer to home — real close, in fact — did you ever wonder why you hiccup? Yep, the answer’s in here, and so is a

ow come? It’s a common question, rather informal, with roots that go back centuries: how did something come to be? In other words… why? Why is this, that? How come you can or can’t? Or, as in “The Science of Why2” by Jay Ingram, how do various branches of science explain

good remedy for them. You’ll also learn why you can’t tickle yourself and why you really shouldn’t want to. On the subject of your body and its weirdness, Ingram explains what two things you have in common with pretty much every mammal over seven pounds. He also explains why you should wash, wash, wash your hands after using the restroom and why (eeuw) you’ll never want to go into a public pool again after you’ve read a certain chapter. Did you ever get lost in the woods? There’s a reason for that, and it’s in this book. So is the ultra-cool reason why your knuckles go snap when you crack them. And while you’re at it, take a v-er-y deep breath when you read about Ju-

The best, perhaps most enjoyable part is that this book feels like a free-wheeling, mind-wandering exercise: dinosaurs lead to DNA leads to cloning leads to ostriches leads to the preservation of wildlife. Science can be lively that way, and never boring. As for this book and your teen, keep in mind that there’s a chapter in here on hangover cures. It’s otherwise perfect for any adult who appreciates serious fun, and you know you want “The Science of Why2” yourself. So come and get it.

lius Caesar and molecules… How do electric eels shock their prey? It’s an important question, solved by this book. So is the deep mystery of why toast always falls butter-side down. You’ll learn how humans fly, in a way; why you should never drop a wood frog in the wintertime; and why your average elephant would lose at Double Dutch… Did you ever notice how one idle thought usually leads to another one? That’s what you get inside “The Science of Why2” — a few answers to things you’ve deeply contemplated, followed by a whole lot of fun facts about things you’ve never heard ‘til now. Yes, it’s presented in a lighthearted, sometimes funny manner, but author

Faith Conversations…

One Human Race

M

y last two articles addressed the painfully divisive nature of prejudice. In those articles, I tried to broaden our understanding of prejudice and the damage that it causes — and I purposefully left out any reference to separate races (African, Asian, European, Hispanic, Middle Eastern, etc.). You may have noticed that and wondered why. In this article, I will share with you my belief that the concept of separate races is a strategic lie perpetuated by the devil for the express

purpose of destroying humanity. But first, let’s take a moment to understand our enemy the devil. In John 8:44, Jesus describes the devil as, “a murderer… not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.” In John 10:10, Jesus said that the devil is a, “thief who comes only to steal and kill and destroy.” In 1 Peter 5:8, Peter writes, “Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.”

It is the devil’s goal to destroy God’s creation — especially that extraordinary part of creation called the human race. The devil is our enemy, and he is a liar. He introduces lies as a strategy Tim to get us to destroy Hartzell each other. Sadly, we have allowed him to be extraordinarily successful. Now that we have identified the enemy and his strategy, let me share the truth with you:

There is only one race. It is called the human race. It was created by God and uniquely endowed with the God-image characteristics of freedom, responsibility, and eternity. The human race, the entire human race, is covered in God’s glorious fingerprints. Beyond the nominal, external, and beautiful variations of skin, eye and hair color, facial structure and body shape, human beings are all alike. In crisis, we can share our blood to save each other’s lives. In love, we can marry and bear beautiful and precious children. In discovery, we can learn and grow and innovate together. My friends, the ev-

idence is overwhelming: there is only one race — it is called the human race — and you are a full and holy member of it. That is the truth. When we accept the truth of one human race, the lie of separate races must disappear from our hearts and our vocabulary. If it doesn’t, then we have to ask ourselves why. Why would we want to be divided? Why would we maintain a lie when the truth is so obvious? Racists believe the lie. They divide humanity into groups and then declare that one group is better than the rest. Racists use it as a way of excusing or justifying inhumane behavior. There are other excuses. Revenge is an excuse for being inhumane. So are jealousy and greed. The devil has many tricks in his bag, but they all have the same goal — destroying humanity. The devil has been using his lies to trick us since the dawn of time. Humanity has always been able to find an excuse for being inhumane. In 1673, Samuel Von Pufendorf wrote, “More inhumanity has been done by man himself than any other of nature’s causes.” Ecclesiastes 1:9 declares, “What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun.” As the devil’s

stooges, we just keep destroying each other. It has always been this way. And unless something changes, it will continue to be this way. The devil applauds as we do his bidding. Are you weary of living with the lie of racism and the anger, fear, and jealousy that come with it? Are you fed up with a world where everyone hates, distrusts and pre-judges each other? Are you weary of living in a world divided into “us” and “them”? Are you sick and tired of doing the devil’s work? If so, there is an answer: “Love is patient; love is kind. It does not envy; it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude; it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.” I Corinthians 13:4-8 Who are you struggling to love today? Has prejudice stolen love, joy, and peace from your heart? Be honest with yourself. Recognize the devil’s schemes. Identify his lies. Don’t let them imprison you in the kingdom of darkness. Open your heart to love every member of God’s one human race. “Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” John 8:32

$100,000 fire of undetermined origin destroyed the 57-year old Andrew Jackson Elementary School at 2216 Linn Street early today as firemen from eight companies battled the blaze in sub-freezing temperatures. Williamsport School District officials said the valuation of the building and its equipment, placed on the property last summer by a Pittsburgh firm, was approximately $100,000, insurance covered about 80 percent of the loss, they said. It was the worst fire in the school district in 36 years. The Williamsport Fire Department sounded a general alarm at 4:15 a.m., 30 minutes after their first alarm was turned in by an unidentified caller living near the Newberry school. Responding were Williamsport companies No. 2,3,5,6 and 7 and Truck A; First Ward Fire Company, South Williamsport, DuBoistown Hose Company and Loyalsock Township Fire Company. The firemen fought the raging blaze in temperatures near 10 degrees

above zero. A special meeting of the school board was called by George R. Lamade, president of the board for tonight at 7:30 o’clock at the administration building on West Third Street to determine where the displaced 289 students will be accommodated. Three Newberry churches and the Young Men’s Christian Association have offered the use of any of their facilities, the school board office reports. This morning, Miss Helen M. Laubach, principal of the Jackson building and Max L. Robbins, district stock clerk met to list needed supplies for pupils when arrangements are made. Fire Chief Michael E. Clark of the city fire department called the last of his men from the scene about 11:45 a.m., nearly eight hours after the first alarm was sounded. A wind estimated at 25 miles per hour aided the flames in sweeping the red brick structure in a short time. Part of the west wall fell while firemen were still at the site and the other walls were termed “dangerous” by Chief Clark.

ne of the oldest clichés is that failure to plan is planning to fail. It also just happens to be true. Think of it like checking the weather. If I am out walking and suddenly it rains, I get wet. However, if I checked the weather reports before I left my home, and knew there was a high likelihood of rain, I would carry along an umbrella. The trick for a large organization, like a municipal government, is to know when it may rain, how hard, and for how long, and then prepare for it. As John F. Kennedy once said, “The time to fix the roof is while the sun is shining.” All of this requires very meticulous forecasting research, and then wisdom on how to prioritize the possible hazards and the potential possibilities for growth. For Lycoming County, this is known as the Comprehensive Plan. The Pennsylvania Municipalities Planning Code was established in 1968 and has been periodically updated, as recently as 2003. This law requires that every county and local municipality have a Comprehensive Plan, which is updated every ten years. It is a general policy guide for the physical, social and economic development for the community. Moreover, when they say, “comprehensive,” they really do mean comprehensive. It covers everything imaginable from land use proposed for residence, industry, business, agriculture, major traffic and transit facilities, utilities, community facilities, public grounds, parks and recreation, preservation of prime agri-

cultural lands, floodplains and other areas of unique hazards, and other similar uses. Then there must be a plan for movement of people and goods, which may include expressways, highways, local street systems, parking facilities, pedestrian and bikeway systems, public transit routes, terminals, airfields, port facilities, railroad facilities, and other similar facilities or uses. The plan must cover community facilities and utilities, which may include public and private education, recreation, municipal buildings, fire and police stations, libraries, hospitals, water supply and distribution, sewerage and waste treatment, solid waste management, storm drainage, and floodplain management — and there is much, much more. The Lycoming County Planning Department has been working on the current plan for the past several years. Their efforts also embody the idea of “comprehensive.” To give just one example, Jenny Picciano has served as the Community and Economic Development Planner for Lycoming County since 2015.

has gone far above and beyond the paid consultants. (And they have done this at a cost that will be at least half of that of the last plan.) Over the next two months, they will be making presentations at the regular Thursday morning County Commissioners Meetings. Each week, one of the eight critical issues, which will impact the county’s future will be highlighted. These would include such areas such as the infrastructure, the economy, flooding, and the drug problem. The purpose is to flush out any significant issues that the public may have. When completed, a final draft will be presented at a public hearing. Finally (!) the plan will be presented to the commissioners to be adopted by the end of June. All of this will be available on the county’s website, lyco. org. Give it a look — you will get a gaze at the future.

One of her efforts was devoted to updating Lycoming County’s Heritage Plan. It was badly in need of updating, given that it was last done in 1974. She and her colleagues networked with the various historical societies of the county to identify historic buildings and resources in the county. These buildings, sites, structures, or districts that are at least 50 years old, and are associated with a distinct architectural style, event, architect, and/or person, serve as a vital bridge to our history and heritage. Kurt Hausammann, the County Planner, is now presenting Lycoming 2030: Plan the Possible. His team deserves an incredible amount of credit. When the plan was updated ten years ago, it required $900,000 in costs and involved lots of outside consultants. Much of the work for the current plan has been done in-house, and in many ways, the Planning Department

recall very well the four homes where I lived with my parents and two siblings as I grew up in Lycoming County from the late 1940’s up through the early ‘60s. Initially, we stayed in the upstairs level of my Grandparents’ home “up the ‘Sock”, just north on Route 87 beyond Snyder’s farm. Our first home “on our own” was on Arch Street in Montoursville — across from the high school. It wasn’t long until we tired of city living and we moved to a rental home in downtown Farragut. The most formative

years, other than those at my Grandparents’ home, occurred next when my parents purchased a farm property with an older house and 45 acres at the base of Katie Jane Mountain that was surrounded by other larger farm properties. As a country boy who loved the outdoors, I was in Heaven! All four houses had numerous things in common. They were all built in the late 1800s to early 1900s. The wood floors creaked when you walked on them, all were heated by monstrous coal furnaces, and the only “central air” occurred when you opened several windows and allowed

Today, the story of bats is, unfortunately, quite different. Their numbers have plummeted. Because there simply aren’t the vast numbers of bats there once were, the once rare occurrence of a bat inside a home simply doesn’t seem to happen at all these days. So, what is the story? Pennsylvania is the host of 9 species of bats, including the little brown bat, the big brown bat, and the Indiana bat. Six of the species hibernate throughout our state in abandoned mines and caves, while three species go south for the winter (hmm, kind of like our “snowbirds!”). Bats generally breed in the summer and give birth the following year in late spring or early summer, with one or two young being the normal litter size, and up to four on occasion. The young are called

“pups” and are almost adult size within six weeks. All bats are insect eaters and have a voracious appetite. A bat will generally consume up to 25 percent of its body weight in a single feeding spree, which can consist of approximately 2,000 insects per night! Some bat species are estimated to consume nearly a million insects per year per bat! But now the bad news. In New York State in 2006, the first discovery of WNS (Whitenose syndrome) occurred. It was so named because a white fungus appears around the nose and on the muzzle, as well as other body parts, of hibernating bats. Unfortunately, there is a high mortality rate among the bats that contract the disease, and it is easily spread while the bats are hibernating in the close confines of caves and mines. Today,

MURRAY

WNS is present throughout Pennsylvania and the eastern United States and has killed an estimated 5.7 million bats. If you are simply not a fan of bats, you may think that WNS is a good thing. But, it is never beneficial to mess with the balance of nature, as will happen as their population decreases and the insect population increases accordingly. Currently, they are a huge controlling factor for the numbers of unwanted insects, such as the mosquito. While bats may be considered by many as being unwanted houseguests, they truly are good neighbors. The next time you happen to discover one darting through your house one evening, try to flush it to the outside where it can gobble up more of those pesky mosquitoes!

a cross breeze to cool the house, generally at night. Each was two stories with a full basement and an attic. And it was in the attic area of each and every one of these homes that a crack, a seam or a slight opening existed that allowed the occasional visitation by a curious BAT! In those days, bats were numerous, and it was not all that unusual that one would be flying about after dark inside the house. Nonetheless, it was never a desirable encounter since people generally thought that bats carried rabies and other diseases, or that one of them might just be a bloodsucking vampire bat! Either way, any such undesirable visitor was caught and thrown out the back door to rejoin his fellow bats outside.

Short sleeve February rabbit hunt.

were not at all anxious to move, but our perseverance with some help from the dogs resulted in a couple of downed rabbits — a good hunt for a February day with temperatures in the 60s. I guess the lesson learned from this February hunt is even though we may want to go out and frolic in the unusual late winter weather, it doesn’t mean the rabbits will be all that cooperative. Oh well, in the meantime I have to look up a couple of rabbit recipes — I’m planning a meal of “surf and turf ” next week — rabbits and bluegills.

soon became apparent that we were going to have to work for the bunnies — they were sitting tight and very reluctant to move. On a couple of occasions, we walked through some hedgerows and thickets that the dogs had already been through only to be surprised by a fleeing rabbit. A bit later in the day, we were working a side hill full of great rabbit cover. After George and the dogs worked through a portion of the hillside I saw George suddenly turn back from where he just came, “There goes one!” he yelled. The 410 barked and the rabbit was down. We flushed at least eight rabbits that day, but one thing was apparent — they

DHS allows married couples to protect 50% of their total resources (excluding some valuable exempt resources) or a minimum of $24,720.00. For couples with total resources greater than twice the minimum, 50% is protected up to the Maximum Resource Standard of $123,600.00. the various six classifications. Locally, District Four was allotted the following: Boys AAAAAA, the District Champion; AAAA – top three teams qualify; AAA- top three teams qualify; AA – top two teams qualify; A – top three teams qualify. In girl’s play: AAAAAA – District Champions advances; AAAA – top four teams qualify; AAA – top three teams qualify; AA – top two teams qualify; A – top four teams qualify. In following this qualification format, Pennsylvania Districts can determine how many teams will be entered into the tournament field and how those competing team will be bracketed. District Four has determined (presumably to round out eight-team brackets) that teams with sub-.500 season records were selected for the tournament field. In some cases, a pig-tail round was added (pitting the eighth and ninth-seeded teams to meet in an opening round.) They further determined the seeding of the teams strictly on the basis of the season’s win/ loss record, with no consideration to the strength of schedule the teams played. These methods have drawn criticism from resulting first-round pairings and teams not achieving a .500 record qualifying for the tournament. The powersthat-be should certainly review a more equitable selection system for future District tournaments. As Jim Mora’s rant suggested, “Playoffs” are not meant for everyone.

out-of-state. Those teams are made up of blue-chip Division One players. It is not a level playing ground, but still, that is in the back of my head. I don’t know that will ever happen. But we are going to keep plugging along, and hopefully, someday that will happen.” But, just like the state lottery, you can’t win unless you buy a ticket and the District Four tournament is where you begin your chances to do so. Congratulations go out to all the boys’ and girls’ teams that made an appearance on this year’s brackets. By the rules under which they played the season, they earned the right to do so. It is an experience they will remember, and for the underclassmen involved it may provide a springboard for future successes. But are the playoffs for everyone? Much has been talked about and written about how the playoff teams are determined and how the seeding takes place. Obviously, the PIAA subscribes to the theory that more is better. This will be the second year in which the governing body decided that six state champions are better than four as the Giant Center will open its doors to three days of competition rather than two with 24 teams and their fans traveling to Hershey. (Can you say cha-ching?) The number of teams each Pennsylvania District sends into state tournament play is determined by the PIAA based upon school enrollment and the number of schools each district has in

advantage of his chances. In last Thursday’s opening round contest of the District 4 Class AAA basketball playoffs, Graver had one of those moments, and in a fashion that has been true to him all season, he seized it. Loyalsock went on to win the game over No. 7 seeded Warrior Run 72-40. It was a game highlighted by runs, but the final eight minutes belonged to Graver, who arguably put together his best quarter of the

season. “I was just left open and took the shot,” Gaver said. “It felt good. I just kept finding open gaps and making shots.” The game was well in hand at the start of the fourth quarter. It helped open the offense up for more players. Loyalsock Brett sent most of the starters Crossley to the bench at the start of the quarter. Graver, who entered the fourth quarter with four points on two of three shooting, excelled over the final eight minutes. Graver settled in with a three and continued to find open spots for clean looks at the basket. “It feels good,” Graver said of the fourth quarter. “I’ve been struggling a little with shooting all season. I didn’t have the best shooting night tonight, but I found the gaps and got easy shots.” Graver might have been a little better than he thought. Over the course of the fourth quarter, Graver nailed all but one of his attempts from the floor. He also did a good job of adjusting to the defense. Midway through his run, the defense collapsed on him. He quickly found Aiden Gair for a layup as he cut to the basket. “On a given night he can scorch the nets,” Loyalsock coach Ron “CI” Insinger said. “He can get hot. If we can ride on his coattails a little bit and get some valuable minutes out of him, it’s going to be a real asset to the team.”

Graver finished with 13 points to help the Lancers kick off the district tournament with a win. He was outstanding moving around the floor to find soft spots in Warrior Run’s defense. It was a big moment for Graver, who went three consecutive games without a point prior to the contest against Warrior Run. He quickly made his presence felt in the first quarter, pulling down two rebounds and scoring two points. He added another two points and a rebound in the second as Loyalsock took a 37-19 lead into halftime. Graver added a rebound in the third before exploding for nine points in the fourth.
